JESSIKA’S STORY I was born with a complete atrioventricular canal defect (CAVC) that left a large hole in the middle of my heart. The cardiologist informed my parents that if they did nothing, I would die within 2 years. He then offered them a glimmer of hope. His medical team asked them to consent to a trial surgery in an effort to save my life. The surgery was successful. Of the 5 children that underwent this procedure in the 1980’s at St. Justine Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, two survived. I was one of the lucky ones. Despite the success of my surgery, I still had heart problems and spent most of my childhood between home and the hospital. I learned about death at a very young age. I remember my very close hospital friend, Marie-Ange, who had leukemia. We were both about 6 yrs. old at the time and played together and saw each other on a regular basis. Every time Marie-Ange and I were at the hospital, the nurses made sure we shared a room together. We were BFF. At night we told each other, “If you are still here in the morning, we will play again.” If you are still here, really meant, if you are still alive. One day, Marie-Ange did not wake up. I knew she had passed away. I lost Marie-Ange and many other young friends along the way. I am very thankful that a foundation like the Children’s Hospital exists to help raise money for research and medical equipment and that it is there, as well, to support families in need. My life experience as a sick child, a mother and more recently as a doula are what inspired me to donate to the Children’s Hospital Foundation. I am not a doctor or a scientist and cannot cure illness but I know that I can make a difference. I wish to raise money in the loving memory of Marie-Ange and all the other sweet little warriors that lost their fight. ~ Jessika Kabayiza

Media Sponsorship

Dear Winnipeg Media Community, We are hoping you will want to partner with us in promoting The Manitoba Moms & Kids Show June 14-15, 2014. It is in light of Jessika’s story that we decided to donate all guest admissions to the Children’s Hospital. As a media sponsor, we would like your assistance in publishing news stories, public service announcements and event notices, advertising and other items of interest that will help promote the event activities to your (listeners, viewers, readers). We would like to be able to raise $10,000 to $15,000 this year in support of the children’s hospital and we need your help. In return, we will include your (newspaper’s, station’s) name and logo on all our promotional material, such as: flyers, newsletters, website, event programs, news releases, and advertising, and publicly in remarks at any special events. Sponsorship isn't just a promotional tool for publicity and customer loyalty; it can also be expected to generate good will and awareness of your newspaper, radio, or television station. Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to your reply and to a future potential partnership. Sincerely, Paul Nk & Jessika Kabayiza
