A NIGHT AT THE NUGGETS WITH SPECIAL GUEST, GARY FORBES

What a thrilling night it was at Ball Arena as we gathered to watch the Denver Nuggets take on the Washington Wizards on February 22, 2024. This wasn't just any ordinary game; it was a truly night to remember with none other than former Nuggets player, Gary Forbes!

The atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation as fans filled the arena, donning their blue and gold jerseys. Gary Forbes, a beloved former Denver Nugget, joined us in the pregame room for a meet and greet with our type 1 heroes, their families, doctors and staff of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, and the Children's Diabetes Foundation (CDF) staff. Supermascot Rocky even made a special appearance before kicking off the game!

As the game tipped off, Gary Forbes joined us in our box seats for a highlight on the jumbotron just before the end of the first quarter. Fans cheered as Gary waved with the CDF staff and kiddos. We had such an amazing time with Gary and the kids absolutely loved meeting him.

SOLE SURVIVORS

Gary Forbes is a former professional basketball player who has played across the globe. Over his twelve-year career, he's played in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as well as leagues in China, Israel, Italy, Vietnam, and many more.

Gary played at the highest level while battling type 1 diabetes. His determination and strong will allowed him to achieve his lifelong dream: to become an NBA basketball player. Now, Gary has taken his talents to the world of comics with the creation of SOLE SURVIVORS

This series aims to inspire, educate, and provide awareness of the daily health challenges children and many other people across the world face with chronic health conditions. Gary's intent is to instill the perseverance and mental guidance to live a healthy lifestyle against all odds and to communicate that diagnoses are not barriers to success, but springboards.

We are students from Mrs. Lamb's fourth grade class at St. Thomas More Catholic School in Centennial, Colorado. As students who contribute to our parish's weekend offertory gift, we can choose a charity to give our donations to. One of our students has a sister with Type 1 diabetes, and he has shared some of her stories about how she manages this disease.

We would like to donate our Children's Charity funds to your foundation.

We will pray for everyone with Type 1 diabetes, especially children, and for your foundation to continue to help those in need.

HAL-LELUJAH!

Hal Joseph, PA-C joined the Adult Clinic at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes in August of 2016 after a career working in urgent care and emergency medicine. Having lived with type 1 diabetes for almost sixty years, Hal is a perfect fit as a midlevel provider for diabetes management. Sarit Polsky, M.D. said, “I love Hal’s enthusiasm. Once or twice a year he'd pop into my office to suggest a new research idea for diabetes pregnancy." At one time, Hal wanted to work with professional athletes who had type 1 diabetes and retired athletes who developed type 2 diabetes, but realized he had more to offer everyone with diabetes. He’s cared for patients (and employees) at the BDC for the past eight years. “My patients have become my family. We’re all working toward the same goal,” Hal said.

Hal’s a great resource on the history of diabetes technology and owns many sensors, pumps, and blood glucose meters he’s used over the years. His goal is to have a museum of sorts at the BDC with an “Evolution of Technology” display case for all who visit. Hal’s eagle eye and background helped him spot the GlucoWatch®, used as a prop in the movie “Panic Room” starring Jodie Foster.

His interests outside the BDC include: sports (his favorite teams are the Yankees, Broncos—though it’s been difficult lately, Avalanche and Rangers, and the Nuggets), movies, music (especially the Beatles, Rolling Stones, U2, Talking Heads, and Neal Young), hiking, biking, skiing, camping, and travel. But he says, “Thinking is the best way to travel.” He carries his harmonica with him wherever he goes and lucky conference attendees have been serenaded by a Beatles song or two. “I think Hal would be an amazing travel buddy because he has fun stories, energy, and is up for anything,” said Zehra Haider, M.D.

During his tenure here at the BDC, Hal has enjoyed helping patients lower their A1c and live better and healthier lives with a chronic illness. He’s also enjoyed being the medical specialist for all the non-diabetes-related care for fellow employees. “I am grateful to have been able to work with Hal. He is a caring and creative provider who taught me many good car and baseball analogies to use for diabetes care,” said Emily Nease, RDN, CDCES.

Hal opened his “Back Alley Ortho Clinic” as a joke after many of us went to him for medical advice. He’s diagnosed everything from broken bones to ear infections to shingles. “I’m grateful for his help over the years, especially interpreting my X-rays before my hip surgery,” said Dawn White, administrative assistant.

Adult Clinic Director Satish Garg, MD said, “Hal’s been a great provider at the Adult Clinic! I’m sure his patients are going to miss him, and we will definitely miss his laughter and jokes.” Hal always has a pun or two at the ready. His current favorite is, “What’s big and gray and doesn’t matter? An irrelephant.”

After a career in service to others, Hal will miss seeing patients and interacting with BDC staff. We’re very thankful to have had him in clinic every week. We hope he’s able to continue hiking, biking, and skiing in our beautiful state. But more importantly, we hope he knows how much we’ll miss him when he retires at the end of March.

Hal would like to leave everyone with this thought, “There’s no perfection. There is hope!”

BARBARA DAVIS CENTER: MEET THE DOCTOR

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DIABETES RESEARCH?

I have always been curious about how a cell knows what type of cell it is going to be. For instance, consider the process of transitioning from a naïve cell, such as a stem cell or progenitor cell, and differentiating it into a neuron, a pancreatic islet beta cell, or a muscle cell. Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to studying this problem. When I was in training, I was focused on figuring out the process of making motor neurons in the brain. But during this research, we discovered a very important protein that we thought would play a key role in motor neuron development, but surprisingly, it turned out to be absolutely critical for generating insulin-producing beta cells. Consequently, I switched the focus of my research and career to study how to make insulin-producing beta cells. And 25 years later, this is still the focus of my research.

DO YOU HAVE PERSONAL A TYPE 1 CONNECTION?

I have a first cousin who has type 1 diabetes. However, my more recent connection is the many students, postdoctoral fellows, and research technicians in my lab that who have type 1 diabetes. It gives a different perspective to our research and our discussions about the research. In addition, we get their opinion and input on how they think the research is going. This provides us with a daily reality check as to what we're doing in the lab and how it might ultimately affect people with type 1 diabetes.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE BDC?

My first faculty position was at the BDC in 1999 when it was located on the 9th Ave campus, and I was there for seven years – it was a great place to start my career. Then I was recruited to Columbia University in New York City to the Berrie Diabetes Center. This was also a great opportunity to grow and evolve my research program in a highly stimulating environment. I was at Columbia for 10 years, continuing my research in diabetes, but then I had opportunity to come back to the Barbara Davis Center to lead the research division. This provided me with the opportunity to build and lead a diverse research program focused on type 1 diabetes.

WHAT MAKES YOUR DEPARTMENT AND TEAM AT THE BDC SO UNIQUE?

Our BDC basic and translational research team consists of an incredibly unique and talented group of scientists, that includes immunologists, bioengineers, stem cell biologists, islet biologists, and computational biologists – all focused on understanding and identifying a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Everyone approaches the question in a different way; we have immunologists who are looking at different populations of the immune cells, such as the T cells, B cells, or understudied immune cells like the macrophages. This allows us to take a more holistic approach to understand how the diverse cells of the immune system might be causing autoimmunity. We also have several groups studying the insulin-producing beta cells themselves to figure out why they are targeted by the immune system. I think the Barbara Davis Center research division is unique in that we have recruited outstanding scientists who all approach the problem in a different way. This allows us to interact with each other and synergize, so we can tackle the disease from all sides and see how we can fix it from many different angles.

The other advantage we have is the fact that we're so close to the clinic and the clinical trials.

Anything that goes on in the Barbara Davis Center in the clinical or translational realm, we can immediately take to the lab to gain a greater understanding of the disease. So in addition to going from the bench to bedside, we can also go from the bedside to bench. It's another reason I think we're so attractive to people coming to study and do research here is that we have the unique interaction between the research and clinics and clinical trials.

“WE ARE IN A GOLDEN AGE OF DIABETES RESEARCH”

WHAT HAS CHANGED WITH PEDIATRIC DIABETES CARE IN THE TIME YOU HAVE BEEN PRACTICING?

The ability to make insulin producing cells from human stem cells, I think that's been the real game changer just in the last couple of years. There are currently ongoing clinical trials with stem cell derived insulin producing cells, but there is still more research to be done. Although insulin itself is a great treatment, it still isn’t a cure. And that is what we are focused on achieving in the BDC research division.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN YOU ARE NOT AT THE BDC?

I love running, reading, and traveling. I’m a foodie so I really enjoy traveling to different cities to try different types of food.

WHAT MOTIVATIONAL OR INSPIRATIONAL ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR TYPE 1S?

The research is moving at a very advanced pace, like with the new technologies and the new discoveries that we're making. For instance, there's Tzield and that's come out of basic T cell biology research. And insulin cells made from human stem cells. Most people only think of advancements in technology, but there have been so many advancements in science. We know so much more about the biology than we did 20 years ago, and we know more about the disease. I think that's going to help us, not only for better care, but for a cure as well.

THE GUILD

ANNUAL MEETING AND INSTALLATION OF THE GUILD EXECUTIVE OFFICERS FOR 2024

The Annual Meeting of The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation was held on January 10, 2024, at the Denver Country Club. As with every year, the Jewels for Hope committee presented their annual check to The Guild, totaling $47,016, and The Guild presented their annual check to the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, totaling $50,000. Katie Grassby gave her 2023 President’s Report before handing over the reins to Lori Finch, who presented her 2024 Incoming President’s Vision.

The new Executive Committee officers were also installed: Lori Finch, President; Gleneen Brienza, President-elect; Katie Grassby, Immediate Past President and Guild Representative on the CDF Board; John Covert, Treasurer; Carol Hamer, Treasurer-elect; Sylvia Huml, Recording Secretary; and Tracy van Orman, Corresponding Secretary. We look forward to another wonderful year for The Guild under their leadership!

CHARLOTTE TUCKER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2024

It was another successful year selecting Charlotte Tucker Scholarship (CTS) recipients! Between November and January, we received 27 outstanding applications from type 1 patients of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. This process culminated in a selection committee meeting on February 15, where committee members selected 20 recipients from the pool of applicants to receive $4,000 scholarships for their 2024-2025 school year. We look forward to seeing what bright academic futures await these deserving students!

JEWELS FOR HOPE

2023 HIGHLIGHTS

We are humbled by the time, dedication, smiles and knowledge that each of you gave as volunteers to Jewels for Hope (JFH) this year. Thank you!

Our year began with the unexpected closing of Crazy Merchant, but by mid-year JFH received a very generous donation offer of a beautiful new space we call “Corona Place”. November found JFH “turning blue” to celebrate National Diabetes Awareness Month and we ended the year with a fabulous GRAND OPENING!

Our first big event was the Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show (BRL). Complementing Jewels for Hope were our Handbags for Hope (HFH) tables which made a big splash this year. We are gradually continuing to grow this new addition to JFH. BRL is our largest fundraising event of the year - $14,500 in 2 hours!

Volunteers worked very hard during August and September getting Corona Place organized. We held our first Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on September 19 with 18 volunteers in attendance. We look forward to our second annual luncheon in 2024!

We had our last sale at Crazy Merchant in June. It was a bittersweet day for all. July was a hive of activity between packing and moving into Corona Place. Yet again, our volunteers pulled us through a frenetic month.

October was filled with two workdays, a table at the Guild meeting, the Women’s Health & Wellness Expo and the Carousel Ball. It was fun to see everyone dressed in their best at the ball. JFH & HFH had a great setup and raised over $7400.

November was another busy month. The front of Corona Place was decorated in blue lights to recognize National Diabetes Awareness month.

We had a workday to get ready for the Jr. League Holiday Mart (JLD), a setup day and three days of selling at the JLD. Again, another successful event which raised just over $9600.

The last event of the year was our Grand Opening on December 1st and 2nd. Holiday cookies and festive drinks were served along with lots of cheer! JFH & HFH are happy to have raised over $6000 at our first official sale at Corona Place.

Well, that is a year in the rearview mirror! We are incredibly grateful for each of you and your willingness to volunteer. Thank you. We would also like to thank Dana Davis and the CDF staff for their support.

Día del Niño (Children’s Day) is an annual celebration throughout Mexico and Latin America that celebrates children, pays homage to their importance in society, and endorses their wellbeing.
