Dear Friends,
Welcome to The 38th Carousel of Hope Ball.
We gather tonight to honor the remarkable advancements in type 1 diabetes diabetes research, care, and prevention over the past 44 years. Your support is vital in aiding the 37 million Americans and 537 million people worldwide living with diabetes. The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes has grown into one of the world’s leading centers, treating thousands of patients regardless of their ability to pay. We have come a long way since we opened the center, but our fight continues until a cure is found.
This year, we are also privileged to recognize two extraordinary individuals. Diane Warren, a songwriter whose music has touched millions, will be honored with the Inspirational Lifetime Achievement Award. Diane, your talent, dedication, and ability to inspire through your art are unparalleled. It is an honor to celebrate your incredible achievements tonight.
We are also thrilled to present Jimmy Jam with the prestigious Brass Ring Award. Jimmy, your contributions to the music industry and your unwavering support for our cause have made a profound impact. Your creativity and generosity are truly deserving of this recognition.
To my dear friends—David Foster, Clive Davis, Jay Leno, George Schlatter, and Quincy Jones—thank you for your years of support, talent, and love. You have made this journey so much brighter, and I am deeply grateful for every one of you.
The incidence of diabetes has doubled over the last twenty years, with projections indicating it will increase by 54% by 2030. Marvin and I began this mission over 44 years ago when our daughter Dana was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Our dream was to build a clinic that would offer the most advanced treatments, prevent complications, and conduct groundbreaking research. Thirty-five percent of our patients are at or below poverty level and 40% are uninsured or underinsured. We welcome everyone with open arms. Today, the Barbara Davis Center stands as a beacon of hope to all who walk through our doors.
I am profoundly grateful to all of you here tonight for joining us in this fight to overcome a disease which leads to so many terrible complications. Your generosity and dedication give me hope that we will find a cure together.
With so much respect, admiration, appreciation, and so much love,
Barbara Davis
Awards
The Inspirational Lifetime Achievement Award was inaugurated in 2016 and will be given out this year for the second time in the history of The Carousel of Hope Ball. The award was created by Co-Chairman and Founder, Barbara Davis, as an honor to individuals who have spent their lifetime as an inspiration to others and made a significant philanthropic contribution to the community. The Brass Ring Award stands as a symbol of profound gratitude and recognition for individuals whose unwavering dedication has forged the path of our mission of patient support, awareness, and research.
The award presented for the Inspirational Lifetime Achievement Award and the Brass Ring Award was crafted in 2001 by renowned artist Robert Graham (1938-2008) as a one-of-a-kind design expressly for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF). Its production continued at the skilled hands of his son, Steven Graham (19632023), through last year. The awards pay tribute to the remarkable supporters who have invested their invaluable time, shared their exceptional talents, and generously contributed their treasures to further our cause. The casting is a bronze rendering of a child’s hand gracefully reaching for the carousel’s brass ring, bearing the recipient’s name delicately gilded and engraved. The brass ring symbolizes our pursuit of a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Robert Graham’s artistic legacy includes monumental civic sculptures, national honors, and continues to grace the collections of esteemed national and international museums. The Carousel of Hope Ball was one of Robert and Steven’s favorite events to attend and support through their artistic talents.
Diane Warren
Inspirational Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
Diane Warren is one of modern music’s most celebrated songwriters. She has penned nine number one and thirty-three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and is tied for having written the most number one songs as a sole writer in Billboard history. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the organization in June of 2024. Her distinguished catalog features beloved songs including “Only Love Can Hurt Like This,” “Un-Break My Heart,” “If I Could Turn Back Time,” and “Rhythm of the Night.”
She has received 15 Academy Award nominations, 15 GRAMMY Award nominations (including one win), an EMMY Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. Her songs have been featured in more than 150 films, including chart-topping hits “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” (“Mannequin,” 1987), “Because You Loved Me” (“Up Close and Personal,” 1996), “How Do I Live” (“Con Air,” 1997), “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (“Armageddon,” 1998), and “Til It Happens To You” (“The Hunting Ground,” 2015). In November of 2022, Warren became the first songwriter in history to receive an Honorary Oscar, as voted on by the Academy’s Board of Governors. Most recently, she wrote the original song “The Fire Inside,” performed by Becky G for the film “Flamin’ Hot,” directed by Eva Longoria, which marked her 15th Oscar nomination. Upcoming projects
for Warren include the original song “One Heart (Can Change the World),” performed by Tiwa Savage for the animated feature “Ozi: Voice of the Forest,” and the original song “The Journey,” performed by H.E.R. for the feature film “The Six Triple Eight,” directed by Tyler Perry and scheduled to be released by Netflix in fall of 2024, among other exciting projects and songs. The documentary “Diane Warren: Relentless,” which provides an intimate, rarely seen look at the life, career and process of Warren, will be available to stream exclusively on MasterClass this winter.
She is the sole owner of her publishing company Realsongs, the most successful female-owned and operated business in the music industry. Warren is a recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a nod to her legendary career, having worked with many of today’s most popular artists, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, H.E.R., Snoop Dogg, Paloma Faith, Jon Batiste, Maren Morris, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Andra Day, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and Janelle Monáe, in addition to having written songs for iconic artists such as Whitney Houston, Cher, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and many more.
Jimmy Jam
Brass Ring Award Recipient
Five-time GRAMMY Award winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Jimmy Jam is a world-renowned songwriter, record producer, musician, entrepreneur, and one half of the most influential and successful songwriting/production duo in modern music history, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Along with Lewis, his 40-year business partner and 50-year best friend, Jimmy’s accomplishments have elevated him to iconic status within the music industry.
Jam & Lewis have collaborated on over 100 Gold, Platinum and/or Diamond certified recordings for a diverse array of artists across all genres including Prince, Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Sting, Elton John, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Beyoncé, Luther Vandross, Rihanna, Rod Stewart, Earth, Wind & Fire, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson, New Edition, Sounds of Blackness, Morris Day, The Time, and Janet Jackson, to name a few.
They have written and/or produced over 200 albums and singles that have reached Gold, Platinum or Diamond status. To date, Jam & Lewis have tallied 26 Billboard number one R&B singles and 16 number one Hot 100 hits, giving the duo more Billboard number ones than any other songwriting/production team in chart history. Their “warm for a long time” philosophy of career progression has allowed them the rare feat of delivering chart-topping hits across five decades (1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s).
Since Jam & Lewis’s first GRAMMY win in the coveted Producer of the Year category in 1986, they have amassed a total of 11 more Producer of the Year nominations, which is the most in GRAMMY history.
As songwriters, Jam & Lewis have garnered over 100 American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Awards, including the ASCAP Writers of the Year Award nine times. The pair have also received the ASCAP Voice of Music Award for “giving voice to the spirit of a generation” and the ASCAP Golden Note Award for “achieving extraordinary career milestones in songwriting.”
The duo have also been honored with Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, inducted into the 2017 class of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and, in 2022, inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for Musical Excellence.
Jimmy Jam is the former Chairman of the Board of the Recording Academy and was the first African American to be elected to that position. He currently serves as Chair Emeritus of that board, is a board member of the GRAMMY Museum Foundation, and is Chairman of the TV Committee overseeing the GRAMMY Awards.
Going back to his roots in Minneapolis as a club and radio DJ, Jimmy hosted “The Jimmy Jam Show” podcast on SiriusXM. His guests have included a diverse array of music makers including Questlove, Mark Ronson, Jermaine Dupri, Babyface, recent Rock Hall inductees Kool & The Gang, and legendary icons Clive Davis, Kenny Gamble, Smokey Robinson, and Berry Gordy.
As part of their lifelong mission to leave music in a better place, Jam & Lewis are celebrating their 50-year relationship with an aggressive slate of musicrelated projects, including “Jam & Lewis: Volume Two,” the follow-up to their number one debut album project “Jam & Lewis: Volume One,” and new projects with Yolanda Adams, Michael Kiwanuka, Ravyn Lanae and Ty Dolla Sign.
On the film and TV side, the duo wrote and produced the score of the award-winning Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo comedy “Unprisoned” for Hulu. A long-awaited biography and film documentary are in the works, as well as a scripted series based on the lives of the Minneapolis icons. They are also executive producing and directing the documentary story of “The Mighty Three”—Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell.
Getting back into performing after a long hiatus, the duo will take their Jam & Lewis live show on the road to festivals and orchestral hall performances to showcase their amazing songbook.
Jam and his wife Lisa, son Tyler, and twins Bella and Max were all devastated when Max was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just two years old. The family dealt with the disease by educating, advocating and inspiring other young people and parents to make sure they knew they weren’t alone.
Max was awarded as a T1D warrior by the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation and later was celebrated at the Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) Imagine Gala, where he helped raise $1.1 million. In his acceptance speech, he vowed, “I promise to stay in this fight and find a cure for type 1 diabetes.”
Last year, Jam and his family were invited to the 2023 Breakthrough T1D Children’s Congress event in Washington, D.C., where Jam provided testimony in Congress about the need to support type 1 diabetes research and access to affordable insulin.
As the man who “discovered” Jam & Lewis, the late great Clarence Avant (The Black Godfather), famously said, “The world has music for those who listen.”
To those words Jam & Lewis simply add, “Just listen,” as they continue to rewrite modern music history as the number one songwriting/production team of all time.

Gladys Knight Featured
Performer
The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last sixty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time GRAMMY Award winner has enjoyed number one hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B, and Adult Contemporary genres, and has triumphed in film, television, and live performance.
All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums: “Good Woman” (1991); “Just for You” (1994); the inspirational “Many Different Roads” (1999); and “At Last” (2001). “At Last,” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson.
Knight has continued to spread her acting wings, making a guest star appearance in the FOX hit show “Star” and appearing in the film “Almost Christmas” in 2016, both of which were produced and directed by Lee Daniels. She appeared on ABC’s 14th season of “Dancing With The Stars” in 2012. In 2019, she competed on the inaugural season of “The Masked Singer” and sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta. Knight sang the National Anthem on yet another major sports stage at the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. This past 2022 holiday season she starred in “I’m Glad It’s Christmas” on Great American Family and received the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Artistic Achievements along with George Clooney, Amy Grant, Tania Leone and U2 in December. In addition, this past March she received the National Medal of Arts along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bruce Springsteen, Jose Feliciano and Mindy Kaling. This year she will be honored as a 2024 GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree.
Her involvement in other creative undertakings, business ventures and humanitarian activities has been extensive, and has brought her honors from industry and community alike. In 2015, a portion of Atlanta’s State Route 9 from Peachtree Street to 14th Street was officially named Gladys Knight Highway.
Jason Derulo Featured Performer
Self-belief unlocks endless possibilities.
Jason Derulo may be recognizable worldwide as a multiplatinum singer and songwriter, visionary entrepreneur, best-selling author, committed philanthropist, and engaging presence, but his story starts unassumingly. The self-described “kid from a Haitian family in Miami” has quietly and consistently grinded to emerge as one of his generation’s most prolific stars. Beyond a powerhouse voice and effusive charisma, a willingness to push limits, break boundaries, and constantly reinvent himself drives his artistry.
Once again, he tells a story you’ve never heard on his fifth full-length offering and Atlantic Records debut, “Nu King.”
“For me, it’s always important to be original and find different ways to stand out,” he exclaims. “My story isn’t typical, but it can be an inspiration. If you’ve ever had doors shut in your face or were told, ‘You’re crazy for dreaming,’ it proves you can do anything you put your mind to. You need to believe in yourself and have confidence.”
Jason’s confidence has ignited a meteoric rise from those humble origins to global stardom. Generating tens of billions of streams, his global sales exceed 250 million singles with dozens of multiplatinum and platinum certifications for smashes such as “Wiggle” [feat. Snoop Dogg], “Take You Dancing,” “Talk Dirty” [feat. 2 Chainz], “Whatcha Say,” and more. Derulo has three songs streamed over 1 billion times each under his belt, namely “Swalla” [feat. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign], “Want To Want Me,” and “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” [with Jawsh 685]. The latter even claimed the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in addition to toppling charts in 16 countries. The latter even claimed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in addition to toppling charts in 16 countries. He’s the rare force of nature equally at home in a duet with BTS or Luke Bryan. With nearly 200 million followers across platforms, he notably remains the “fourth most-followed male on TikTok and 11th biggest account overall.” He’s also appeared in various films and television series, including “Spinning Gold” and “Empire.”
His portfolio encompasses ownership stakes in Rocket Car Wash, Pro Volleyball Federation, and the Omaha Supernovas. Other investments include Catch L.A. and Rumble Boxing, as well as the development and launch of a line of supplements and fitness products with Najafi Group. Plus, he penned the popular book “Sing Your Name Out Loud: 15 Rules for Living Your Dream” and created the “UZO” graphic novel in collaboration with Z2 Comics. This year also saw him launch his “On The Road Podcast.”
Now, “Nu King” represents yet another conscious evolution. As his boldest body of work yet, he collates a handful of fan favorites such as “Acapulco,” “Slow Low,” “Swalla,” “Lifestyle” [feat. Adam Levine], “Love Not War” [feat. Nuka], and more alongside various newly recorded anthems.
“‘Nu King’ is the culmination of my career so far,” he notes. “It’s been eight years since my last full-length, and a lot has happened. I never stopped making music though. A lot of those songs didn’t have a proper home, so I made a place for them. The newer songs are just a piece of my life at the moment. Combining everything, the entire album has a cinematic feel. For the title, King is my son’s name. You can go further, and this is a crowning moment I’m really proud of. 2023 was a preparation year; 2024 is a year of celebrating all of the hard work I’ve put in and what I’ve built.”
Fittingly, he introduces “Nu King” via the single “Spicy Margarita” with Michael Bublé. On the track, softly plucked Spanish guitar tiptoes through swooning strings only for a hypnotic dancefloor-ready beat to kick into high gear. Jason and Michael lock into a simmering back-and-forth as the hook instantly intoxicates, “You’re my spicy margarita, babe. Burn my tongue. Make me shake. Mix it up, or give it to me straight. Turn me on.” It might just be his cheekiest and catchiest banger to date.
“I’ve listened to Michael since college,” he smiles. “His music is a major part of my life. So, I played him ‘Spicy Margarita,’ and he jumped on it immediately. He asked, ‘Is it okay if me and my guys add some orchestration?’ I was like, “Yeah!,” He laughs. “His version was unbelievable. It was exactly what I envisioned. It has a Latin feel with a little Brazilian funk. I’m really excited for everyone to hear it.”
George Schlatter
Producer
George Schlatter is a veteran of over 60 years in network television. Throughout his long and successful career as a producer, director and writer, George Schlatter has been responsible for hundreds of hours of television series and specials. He changed the face of television when he created and produced such breakthrough series as “Laugh-In” and “Real People.” Over the years, Mr. Schlatter has received numerous honors and awards, including 25 EMMY Award nominations, three EMMY Awards, three Image Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Television Critics Awards, the International Radio & Television Man of the Year Award, a Directors Guild Award, and the Producers Guild Man of the Year Award, as well as many others. When the Television Academy celebrated its 15th anniversary, they honored him for his outstanding contribution to television. In 1989, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1992, Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra, on behalf of the Scott Newman Center, honored him with a tribute dinner for his showmanship and involvement in so many charitable causes. In 1995, the Museum of Television & Radio did a special tribute to him for his contributions in the world of television.
He was also honored by his alma mater, Pepperdine University, with a three-hour gala at the Saban Theater hosted by many of the stars with whom he has worked over the past 60 years.
In 1987, he created and established the American Comedy Awards, which aired for 15 straight years as annual network-televised events designed to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of comedic actors and performers. “Of all the work I’ve done, I am perhaps most proud of my involvement in the early careers of performers like Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin, Roseanne, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Flip Wilson and others who have gone on to greater heights. Working with stars is rewarding, but helping to create stars is the most fulfilling of all accomplishments.”
He produced the first five years of the GRAMMY Awards, as well as television series starring such icons as Cher and Bill Cosby. His producing credits extend all the way back to programs like “The Judy Garland Show” and “The Dinah Shore Chevy Show.” He produced specials starring Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Eddie Murphy, Elton John, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Michael Jackson, Doris Day, Jonathan Winters, Richard Pryor, Shirley MacLaine, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Diana Ross, Lena Horne, Placido Domingo, Nat King Cole and scores of others.
Schlatter and Whoopi Goldberg co-produced a special based on the life of Moms Mabley, which included interviews with Sidney Poitier, Quincy Jones, Tommy Smothers, Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Kathy Griffin and many others. He also produced a “Laugh-In” reunion show for a PBS pledge drive, which was the most successful comedy special ever for PBS, and a 50th Anniversary “Laugh-In” special for Netflix.
His producing credits also include “The American Film Institute Life Achievement Award Salutes to Dustin Hoffman and Harrison Ford,” “The 54th and 55th Presidential Inaugural Opening Ceremonies of George W. Bush,” and the Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) Inaugural Gala: Finding a Cure and Nancy Reagan: A Love Story. He has produced every Carousel of Hope Ball in Beverly Hills since 1990, working closely with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. He is particularly proud of the work he did in helping Barbara Sinatra create her center for the treatment of sexually abused children at the Eisenhower hospital in Palm Springs.
George is very involved with the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York, which is dedicated to presenting the story of comedy and preserving its heritage for future generations.
He is married to former actress Jolene Brand who was a regular on the Ernie Kovacs Show. They have two daughters, Andrea and Maria.
Clive Davis
Music Chairman
As the record industry’s most innovative and influential executive, Clive Davis has had a profound effect on the world of music. In the first phase of his career, Davis was General Counsel of Columbia Records and was appointed Vice President and General Manager in 1966. In 1967 he was named President of the company and personally signed Janis Joplin’s Big Brother and The Holding Company to Columbia. After that, he was directly responsible for the signing of many more landmark artists in the rock field, among them Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Santana, Loggins & Messina, Laura Nyro, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, and Earth, Wind & Fire. In addition, he brought to the label such artists as Neil Diamond, Pink Floyd, and The Isley Brothers.
While building the rock roster, Davis also played a key role in the careers of Simon & Garfunkel, Sly & The Family Stone, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand and Andy Williams. Davis figured prominently in shaping career turning points for Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, and he signed Weather Report. Under his aegis, the company made a strong entry into R&B. Davis’ deal with Gamble & Huff brought to the company the famed Philadelphia International label, which had an enormous string of hits and set the course for Black music in the 1970s.
Davis left Columbia Records in May of 1973 and, after writing the book “Clive: Inside The Record Business,” a national best-seller in both hardcover and paperback, he founded Arista Records with Columbia Pictures in the fall of 1974. Only three months after the company opened its doors, Barry Manilow’s smash hit “Mandy,” found and named by Davis, went straight to number one.
Under Davis’ leadership, Arista launched the careers of Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Kenny G, and Sarah McLachlan. The label also attracted such important artists as Aretha Franklin, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Lou Reed, Eurythmics, Dionne Warwick, Hall & Oates, and Carly Simon.
Davis founded Arista Nashville in 1988 and, working with Nashville’s Tim Dubois, it quickly became the talk of the industry with the discovery of Alan Jackson,
Brooks & Dunn and Brad Paisley. With over 150 major industry awards, Arista Nashville set the pace for country music.
Analogous to his agreement with Gamble & Huff in the 1970s, Davis made his agreement with L.A. Reid and Babyface to form LaFace Records in October of 1989. During this time, LaFace built an outstanding roster of hitmaking artists including TLC, Toni Braxton, Usher, OutKast, and P!nk. In 1994, Davis helped create Bad Boy Records with an artist roster that grew to include Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, and Mase. Along with LaFace Records, Bad Boy became the most successful hip-hop and rap label of the 1990s.
Throughout the 1990s, Arista staked its place in music history time and time again. The nine-time GRAMMYwinning album “Supernatural” sold over 26 million copies worldwide, produced the number one hits “Smooth” and “Maria Maria,” and marked the reunion of Carlos Santana and Clive Davis, who accepted, as producers, the GRAMMY for Best Album of The Year.
Also, in 2000, Clive Davis was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as the only non-performer. Almost simultaneously, it was announced that he would be the recipient of the Trustees Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) at the GRAMMY Awards that year.
In August of 2000, Clive Davis began a new phase in his career, announcing the formation of J Records. The label quickly became the buzz of the industry, beginning with Alicia Keys, whose debut album “Songs In A Minor” sold over 10 million copies and swept the GRAMMYs. J Records emerged as a dominant music force with chart topping albums by Maroon 5 (whose debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide), Annie Lennox, Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart, Jennifer Hudson, and Leona Lewis. Notably, Rod Stewart’s five “Great American Songbook” volumes returned him to the top of the charts, selling over 18 million copies worldwide with all five volumes being co-produced by Davis.
Davis’ passion for music is matched by a passion for helping his fellow man. He has been the recipient of
many humanitarian honors from organizations such as the T.J. Martell Foundation, the Anti-Defamation League and the American Cancer Society. In 1985, Davis began his tireless efforts in the battle against AIDS, and, in 1998, he was bestowed the Humanitarian Award from the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR).
In 2002, Mary Schmidt Campbell, dean of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, and Clive Davis announced his $5 million gift to the school for the creation of a new Department of Recorded Music. The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music is the first of its kind to offer a four-year, degree-granting undergraduate program that recognizes the creative producer as an artist in his own right and musical recording itself as a creative medium.
In 2008, Clive Davis was appointed Chief Creative Officer for all of Sony Music Entertainment, both a change in operational responsibility and an expansion of the artists he would now creatively be responsible for.
In 2010, NARAS named the prestigious state-of-the-art theater inside the GRAMMY Museum the “Clive Davis Theater” and, in 2011, New York University awarded him an Honorary PhD of Fine Arts. Also in 2011, Davis made an additional gift of $5 million to the Tisch School, expanding the Department of Recorded Music into an Institute.
In February of 2013, Simon & Schuster published Davis’ autobiography, “The Soundtrack of My Life.” It entered The New York Times Nonfiction Best Seller list at number two and remained in its top ten for nine consecutive weeks. The book was published as a paperback in November of 2013.
The Ridley Scott firm produced a widely-praised film documentary on Davis’ life called “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives.” It opened the Tribeca Film Festival at Radio City Music Hall on April 19, 2017 and won the Critics’ Choice Award and the Hollywood Music In Media Award for Best Documentary. It became a big best seller for two years on iTunes, reaching number one for five consecutive weeks, and then premiered on Netflix in September of 2019, where it has gone viral all over the world. In January of 2019, Davis produced the “Memorial Concert for Aretha Franklin,” which became a big television success for the CBS Television Network. Also in 2019, Davis began executive producing an eight-part television series produced by Brian Grazer for Disney on the life of Aretha Franklin.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Clive Davis was a Phi Beta Kappa at New York University, where he graduated magna cum laude with his Bachelor of Arts in 1953. He then graduated with honors from Harvard Law School in 1956. He resides in Manhattan, with two sons and a daughter also residing in Manhattan and one son living in Los Angeles.
Quincy Jones
Music Chairman
Named by Time Magazine as one of the six most influential jazz artists of the 20th century, Quincy Jones is an impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word. Over seven decades, Jones’ career has encompassed the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, TV producer, record company executive, television station owner, magazine founder, multimedia entrepreneur, and humanitarian. Among the multitude of awards that he has received for his contributions are an EMMY Award, seven Academy Award nominations, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, 28 GRAMMY Awards, and a total of 80 nominations, making him the all-time most nominated GRAMMY artist. He is the recipient of the Republic of France’s Commandeur de la Legion d’ Honneur, and, in 2001, he was inducted as a Kennedy Center Honoree, the United States’ most prestigious artistic award, for his lifetime contributions to the culture of the country. He was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a “Jazz Master”—the nation’s highest jazz honor— and was most recently bestowed the National Medal of Arts, our nation’s highest artistic honor. In 2016, Jones received a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical for the Broadway production of “The Color Purple.” The award completed the rare EGOT set for Jones, an exclusive club of artists who have received an EMMY, GRAMMY, Oscar and Tony Award.
In 2001, Quincy Jones added the title “Best Selling Author” to his list of accomplishments when his autobiography “Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones” entered the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Wall Street Journal Best Seller lists. Released by Doubleday Publishing, the critically acclaimed biography retells Jones’ life story from his days as an impoverished youth on the South Side of Chicago through a massively impressive career in music, film and television, where he worked beside legends such as Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Michael Jackson, among many others. In conjunction with the autobiography, Rhino Records released a four-CD boxed set of Jones’ music, spanning his more-than-five-decade career in
the music business, entitled “Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones.” In 2008, he also released the coffee table book “The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey and Passions.”
One of Jones’ recent projects is the release of “Soul Bossa Nostra,” an album featuring some of today’s biggest recording artists and producers such as Usher, Ludacris, Akon, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, T-Pain, Robin Thicke, LL Cool J, John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Wyclef Jean, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Three 6 Mafia, David Banner, Bebe Winans, Mervyn Warren, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Paul, and Scott Storch, among others. In the project, these iconic names have joined together to celebrate the music of the multi-GRAMMYwinning producer, composer and arranger by recording contemporary versions of popular recordings from his massive catalog. Other projects include the book “Q on Producing,” which recounts his seven-decade-long career working in the recording studio with music icons such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Jackson, among many others; a duets album with Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett; as well as multiple projects for film and television.
A longtime humanitarian and activist, in 1999 Quincy Jones joined Bono and Bob Geldof during a meeting with Pope John Paul II as a part of the Jubilee 2000 delegation to end debt in developing nations. The delegation’s visit resulted in $27 billion in developing nations’ debt being relieved. Through his Project Q Foundation, a joint initiative with the Harvard School of Public Health, Jones is actively working with nongovernmental organizations such as UNICEF, the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative and the Inter-American Development Bank, among others, to improve the health and wellbeing of millions of children in developing countries such as Rwanda, South Africa and Asia.
David Foster
Host & Music Director
David Foster is one of the most illustrious composers of our time. With 16 GRAMMY Awards, including three for Producer of the Year, an EMMY Award, a Golden Globe, and three Oscar nominations for Best Original Songs, Foster has earned a reputation as a keen spotter of new talent, playing a key role in the discovery and career launches of Celine Dion, Josh Groban, and Michael Bublé.
Few other individuals can claim to have their fingerprints on more major moments in all of popular music than David Foster. He has created hit songs for a diverse array of artists including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Chicago, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Tony Braxton, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Seal, Chaka Khan, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Hall & Oates, Brandy, NSYNC, Boz Scaggs, and Gloria Estefan.
In 2008 and 2011, Foster stepped out as a performer in his own right with “Hit Man: David Foster and Friends” PBS specials, which became PBS’ highestrated shows in decades. In 2018 and 2019, Foster started touring with his show “An Intimate Evening with David Foster.” The shows garnered rave reviews and were so successful that he now devotes much of his time to selling out concerts around the world.
Foster is gearing up to take on Broadway with several projects, including writing the music for a new musical about the iconic animated character Betty Boop. In 2023, David released a Christmas album with Katharine McPhee titled “Christmas Songs.”
Foster has made charitable work his life’s other priority. Meeting with a young girl from his hometown who was awaiting a liver transplant had a profound impact and led him to create The David Foster Foundation in 1986. Its mission is to provide financial support to Canadian families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants, along with a new focus on organ donor awareness.

The Symposium: Emerging
Diabetes Technologies and Beta-Cell Isolation
The 2024 Carousel of Hope symposium’s first session will focus on emerging diabetes technologies and newer medication treatments for improving healthcare outcomes. There is strong data that supports the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Specifically, data supports improvement in glucose control, and hypoglycemia (especially severe and nocturnal) and reductions in all-cause hospitalizations and healthcare resource utilization, especially in patients with type 2 diabetes.
There are more than 537 million people with diabetes diagnoses globally, and in the USA, there are about 40 million with diabetes. There are approximately 100 million people with diabetes requiring insulin treatment. More recently, there have been four hybrid closed loop systems (HCL) that are either FDA or EMA approved for the use in patients with type 1 diabetes. Globally (mostly in the USA and western Europe), about 1.6 million people with insulin-requiring patients with diabetes use one of the four systems (Medtronic 780G, Tandem Control IQ, CampX APS and OmniPod 5), previously referred to as artificial pancreas systems. The past, present, and future of CGM and HCL systems will be discussed by Drs. Satish Garg, Greg Forlenza, and Stayce Beck.
Unfortunately, many people with type 1 diabetes are becoming overweight and obese in the western world, probably due to improved glycemia with better insulins and HCL systems. Many recent studies highlight the use of GLP -1 RA analogs in people with type 1 diabetes (though off-label) with significant reductions in weight and improvements in other glycemic metrics. This will be discussed at length by Dr. Satish Garg.
The basic science research session, chaired by Dr. Lori Sussel, will highlight the genetics of type 1 diabetes (discussed by Dr. Bridgett Frohnert), including the ways to detect type 1 diabetes early and the future of cell therapy for people with type 1 diabetes. The first drug for preventing type 1 diabetes (teplizumab) was approved by the FDA for delaying the onset of type 1 diabetes. Dr. Bobbie-Jo Webb Robertson will discuss if Artificial Intelligence will help in finding early causes of type 1 diabetes, and Dr. Al Powers will discuss the altered pancreatic function contributes to T1D.
On behalf of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, I want to thank you all for participating actively in our 2024 Carousel of Hope Symposium. I wish you all the very best for the Carousel of Hope—remember to bid liberally during the silent and live auctions this evening.

NOTEWORTHY CLINICAL RESEARCH
The Barbara Davis Center’s investigators consistently contribute to expanding knowledge about T1D identification, causation, treatment, and outcomes. Some recent findings include:
• BDC investigators were actively involved in clinical trials pivotal for FDA approval of therapies and devices, including five hybrid closed loop insulin dosing systems, as well as new drugs including insulin FiAsp, insulin Lyumjev, weekly basal insulin, inhaled insulin (Afrezza), hepatic directed insulin (lysosome), and nasal glucagon (Baqsimi).
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) rates at diabetes diagnosis among children rose to 59% in 2017 and over 60% during the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2023.
• Enteroviral infections serve as predictors of islet autoimmunity.
• Autoimmunity Screening for Kids (ASK) study reveals early T1D in 1% of Denver children and undiagnosed celiac disease in 2%.
• Teplizumab treatment may delay the need for insulin up to 1-2 years in people with early stage (antibody positive) type 1 diabetes.
KEY BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH
The Barbara Davis Center secured the competitive National Institutes of Health (NIH) P30 Diabetes Research Center award in 2020, providing core resources, enrichment programs, and pilot and feasibility grants to facilitate interdisciplinary cooperation among researchers in diabetes and related areas of endocrinology and metabolism. The BDC’s pivotal contributions to high-profile studies centered on the pancreatic islet in T1D include:
• Discovery that methyldopa inhibits diabetesspecific activation of HLA-DQ8 molecules.
• Elucidation of RNA processing’s role in regulating islet function in T1D.
• Development of insulin B-chain fragments as superagonists for T cells in T1D.
• Novel techniques to enhance maturation and functionality of human stem cell-derived beta cells.
• Modulation of T1D progression through CAR T cells targeting a pathogenic MHC Class II peptide complex.
• In vitro generation of thymic epithelial cells to model T1D autoimmunity.
• Utilization of novel technologies to identify new biomarkers for early T1D prediction.
• Active participation from BDC investigators in planning and leadership committees for esteemed organizations, including the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Heart Association, the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, Keystone Research Symposia, nPOD, and the T1D Exchange Clinic Registry.
The Barbara Davis Center’s Research Division offers cytometry and islet preparation services to diabetes researchers across the University of Colorado School of Medicine campus. The Molecular Biology Service Center provides fundamental molecular biology support, DNA sequencing, cell line authentication,
and mycoplasma testing. The microscopy program, established in 2019, grants access to equipment and expertise for enhanced visualization of tissues affected by T1D. In 2021, the BDC played a role in initiating a human organoid core to facilitate the study of T1D’s impact on human tissues. The CAP & CLIA certified Autoantibody/HLA Service Center conducts studies involving assays for islet autoantibodies and markers of other autoimmune disorders, including celiac and Addison’s disease. This laboratory serves as the core facility for numerous national and international trials focused on preventing type 1 diabetes.

Children’s Diabetes Foundation
Making an Impact Through Fundraising
Established in 1977, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) serves as the fundraising arm for the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) located in Aurora, Colorado. The Barbara Davis Center caters to over 8,000 patients, engaging in extensive research focused on finding a cure for diabetes via stem cell therapy and other methodologies. Additionally, the center delves into diabetes technology, complications, prevention, and management. A noteworthy 40% of BDC patients lack insurance coverage or are underinsured, while 35% live at or below the poverty threshold. Funding from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation not only supports these patients and BDC initiatives but also fuels CDF programs.
The physicians at the Barbara Davis Center possess a distinctive vantage point on this condition, enabling them to observe every facet of it up close. This proximity frequently sparks innovative research concepts that might not secure grants without prior evidence of success from other studies. In instances where grant funding is unavailable, such research can stall. However, at the BDC, physicians benefit from the financial support of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. This backing empowers them to bring these projects to fruition or generate preliminary results essential for progressing to the next phase and obtaining grants. This facilitates the efficient advancement of the field of research.
Managing diabetes and acquiring necessary supplies amount to a staggering $20,000 per year, a financial burden that can devastate families. These costs are necessary, as individuals with type 1 diabetes cannot survive without insulin. The Helping Hand program steps in to aid financially challenged families by providing essential diabetes supplies, transportation to appointments, education, and technology required to effectively manage type 1 diabetes. Furthermore, the program extends assistance for ambulance
transportation, hospital bills, and even monthly rent, ensuring these families can afford not only the needs of the individual with type 1 diabetes but also those of the entire family.
With deep gratitude, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation acknowledges the contributions of the nearly 300 dedicated volunteers of The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. These individuals consistently offer their time and talents to bolster the Foundation’s growth. They orchestrate engaging events such as the Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show, Run for the Ring 5K & Kids Fun Run, Boo Bash Halloween event, and a diabetes day camp hosted biannually for type 1 kids. Additionally, they set up booths at different events to spread awareness and education. In all these ways and more, this volunteer group forms an integral part of CDF.
The Children’s Diabetes Foundation aims to provide emotional support to families as well. Since 2016, the Foundation has been hosting monthly support groups where families can convene to discuss life with type 1 diabetes. Individuals with type 1 diabetes are twice as likely to experience depression; offering them a platform to communicate with others who understand their experiences firsthand can be transformative. Presently, CDF hosts two support groups—one in the Denver Metro area and another online. These groups facilitate open discussions about the challenges of living with type 1 diabetes.
Earlier this year, the seventh annual Empowering Patients for Individualized Care (EPIC) Diabetes Conference took place on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. This one-day patient conference was designed for individuals living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, along with their friends, family, and caregivers. Attendees engaged in sessions
and directly connected with leading endocrinologists and diabetes specialists from Colorado. Attendees overwhelmingly expressed their satisfaction and appreciation, grateful for the sense of shared experience in dealing with the condition.
Continuing its commitment, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation collaborates with the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes in hosting the Ways to Achieve Targets in Diabetes Care (ATDC) Keystone Conference, held annually in Keystone, Colorado. The 34th annual ATDC brought together over 480 healthcare professionals from 42 states and six countries for a four-day span. The conference aimed to impart the most current insights into diabetes care, technology, and research to enhance patient care.
Presently, there exists widespread naivety about diabetes and the daily challenges faced by individuals living with the condition. CDF remains resolute in raising awareness and educating the public to dispel misconceptions. The goal is to eradicate statements like
“You have diabetes because you ate too much sugar,” or “You can’t eat that.” These stereotypes persist in the public consciousness despite their inaccuracy. Through sharing the authentic experiences of those with type 1 diabetes, CDF aims to bridge this knowledge gap and extend support to those living with the condition.
The uniqueness of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes lies in its comprehensive approach to patient care. Within its walls, patients can access a diverse array of professionals, including doctors, physicians, nutritionists, social workers, psychologists, prescription managers, scientific researchers, and more. This integrated approach ensures every aspect of a patient’s diabetes care is addressed comprehensively. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation proudly raises funds for this remarkable facility, which is making a profound impact in the realm of diabetes.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that impacts the body’s ability to convert food into energy. The condition affects over 37 million individuals in the United States, with around 1.6 million having type 1 diabetes (T1D). Formerly referred to as childhood or juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes often emerges in children, teenagers, and young adults, though it can manifest at any age.
You are likely familiar with insulin and glucose, but how do they function? Following a meal, the body breaks down food into glucose (sugar) and nutrients, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. This leads to an increase in blood sugar levels, prompting the pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream. In people with diabetes, the body either cannot produce enough insulin or does not respond to it effectively. Consequently, sugar remains in the bloodstream instead of entering cells where it is utilized as energy.
As a result, individuals with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin regularly to counteract high blood sugar levels. This involves multiple doses of insulin administered throughout the day, either through an insulin pump worn on the body or by injections. While these measures are beneficial for maintaining stable blood sugar levels, they are not foolproof. Effective diabetes management incorporates numerous factors, including diet, physical activity, hormonal changes, stress levels, and more.
Another significant concern for individuals with diabetes is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which
is a side effect of the medications used to manage this disease. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include blurry vision, trembling, sweating, impaired speech, irritability, drowsiness, and disoriented behavior. In severe cases, very low blood sugar can lead to unconsciousness or seizures, posing immediate danger or death.
Many of us may remember the movie “Steel Magnolias,” released over 30 years ago, where Julia Roberts plays the role of someone with type 1 diabetes. Most women with T1D at the time were discouraged from becoming pregnant because of poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Fortunately, we have come a long way in the past 30 years with the availability of many new insulin analogs (long-acting and rapid-acting insulins) and other technological advances, including continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), insulin pumps, and development of automatic insulin delivery systems. Such advancements have allowed women with T1D today to have healthy pregnancies and babies.
The risk of developing diabetes is higher than that of most other chronic illnesses. It is estimated that someone new is diagnosed with diabetes approximately every 17 seconds in the United States. Regrettably, there is currently no cure for diabetes. Once diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, individuals will have the condition for life unless a cure is discovered. Due to these challenges, the Barbara Davis Center remains dedicated to enhancing diabetes care and actively seeking a cure for type 1 diabetes.
The Cost of Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease that does not discriminate. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) imposes a significant financial burden on those affected, particularly for families managing type 1 diabetes in children. The costs associated with T1D are extensive, encompassing medical expenses, ongoing supplies, and everyday management. For families, this means dealing with costs such as insulin, blood glucose monitors, test strips, continuous glucose monitors, and insulin pumps, all of which are critical for managing the disease effectively. The total annual cost for a person with T1D can exceed $10,000, and this amount can be substantially higher for families with limited insurance coverage or those facing high out-of-pocket expenses. With 45% of the patients at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) uninsured or underinsured and 35% of patients living at or below the poverty level, the cost of this disease can be crippling for BDC patients and families.
In addition to the direct medical costs, there are indirect costs associated with managing T1D. These can include missed workdays for caregivers, reduced productivity, and emotional stress. The financial strain can be overwhelming, especially for families with limited financial resources. The complexities of managing TID, including frequent doctor visits and the constant need for glucose monitoring, can place a significant strain on families both financially and emotionally.
To alleviate this burden, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) plays a crucial role. CDF is dedicated to supporting patients with T1D and their families by addressing the financial challenges they face. The organization provides financial assistance for essential diabetes-related supplies and medications that may not be fully covered by insurance. This includes funding for insulin, glucose testing supplies, insulin pumps, and other necessary equipment through our programs. Additionally, CDF offers support for emergency needs and special projects, such as funding for diabetes education programs and family support initiatives.
The Children’s Diabetes Foundation also engages in advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the economic impact of T1D and promote policies that improve access to affordable healthcare for affected families. By partnering with healthcare providers, community organizations, and researchers, we help to advance initiatives aimed at reducing the financial burden and improving the quality of life for those living with T1D.
Through these efforts, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation not only provides immediate financial relief but also contributes to long-term solutions for managing the financial impacts of T1D. By addressing both the direct and indirect costs associated with the disease, we at CDF help ensure that families can focus more on their child’s health and well-being rather than being overwhelmed by financial strain. Thank you for your support of The Carousel of Hope and your support of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes—you are making an incredible impact tonight.

TO MY T1D COMMUNITY
For 38 years, the Carousel of Hope Ball has brought the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community together to benefit the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. I’ve had the privilege of participating in this event in the past and have always found it to be a celebration of progress, connection, and hope. Though I cannot attend in person this year, please know I am there with you in spirit. We’re all one community, working in lockstep to change the course of T1D detection.
As a parent of a child with T1D, I understand firsthand just how much this condition can impact entire families from the moment of diagnosis. T1D can impact anyone at any time, regardless of family history. That’s why I believe so strongly in the importance of early detection and why I’m proud to have been engaged by Sanofi for their Screen for Type 1 movement to encourage people to get screened for T1D before symptoms arise.
Truthfully, we all have a role to play when it comes to T1D awareness, and events like the Carousel of Hope Ball provide a necessary opportunity to continue this important work. We must keep speaking out about the power of early detection through T1D screening, with the goal of giving individuals and their families the information they need to prepare for the future.
Sincerely,
USHER
