A Future Oriented Facility WellStar Paulding Hospital is the cornerstone of an innovative community hospital campus. The facility highlights innovation in an unique approach to flexibility throughout each department. It is located in a community that ranks as one of the fastest growing in the country. CDH architects and designers along with the WellStar leadership took a decisively state-of-the-art approach to advancing healthcare and safety for the people, who use the facility. The hospital is amazingly flexibile. Patient care and experience was a central focus for the design. The goal for future growth and expansion was essential to the success and sustainability of the facility.
A Pebble Partner WellStar Paulding Hospital is the first Pebble Hospital in Georgia. It is an eight-story, 250,000 square foot Energy Star facility that contains 56 beds and is expandable to 112 beds. It offers core medical services such as cardiac diagnostics and treatment, women’s imaging, therapeutics services, a cancer center, and ear, nose, and throat care. As a Pebble Partner, Paulding Hospital is a healing environment. A strong commitment was made early in the planning stages to provide state-of-the-art quality care in a continuous learning, progressive, and innovative facility. The out patient focused campus strategically co-locates service lines and a central organizing atrium to consolidate and expedite the care process within this one facility.
A Sustainable Solution Designers explored many sustainable solutions for Paulding Hospital. The facility was designed with passive and active sustainable design features. Passive features include continuous outboard insulation coupled with high performance glazing with increased insulation value and high reflectance to minimize solar heat gain in the atrium. The south faรงade of the hospital uses sun shades at each window to prevent solar gain as well. This shades cast shadows at peak daylight hours to prevent glare and allow the active cooling systems to operate more efficiently during hot Georgia summers. Active features include a ground source heat pump system that contains 209 wells. Some of these go down 400 feet. This plan utilizes the earth beneath the parking areas creating a plan calling for 16 miles of geothermal wells and 32 miles of radiant piping that provide heat exchange to warm and to cool the reinforced concrete slabs in the six level window wall atrium and in other public spaces. Evidence Based Design methods played a leading role in the design of the Paulding Hospital. Having a system like this in place eliminates the need for cooling towers and lessens the impact on the environment while saving time and energy.
The WellStar Paulding Hospital is a beacon to the community and a cornerstone to a campus dedicated to providing state-of-the-art healthcare to the surrounding community. Its simple design concept resounds with aesthetic appeal and energy saving resources. The atrium rises above the rolling landscape of northwest Georgia and stands as a symbol of WellStar’s commitment to the future and to healing and wellness for generations to come.
Intentional Spaces for Families Every area of the new Paulding medical facility has been designed and planned to support and underscore human value and the fact that people and their personal needs come first. The hospital reflects natural colors and invites patients and their families to relax in an environment that focuses on the integration of healing, health, and wellness. Light spills over from the atrium and windows filling important areas with natural comfort. The hospital’s design, along with its textures and surfaces were chosen to work together in harmony to create an atmosphere of healing and hope. Hospital officials did not want the “caring� aspect of the hospital to stop at the doorway.
Innovations in Patient Care Paulding Hospital takes healthcare to the highest standard from implementing the most up-todate technology to handling the most sensitive issues concerning patients and families. Safety and patient experience are key factors. The facility was designed with a series of valuebased decisions that allowed safety to remain at the forefront of all conversations. There are zero thresholds and all finish flooring materials have flush transitions reducing the risk for falls. Standardization of the patient room and bedside access to medication and supplies increases bedside time for caregivers It also reduces interruptions and creates a safer environment for care delivery.
State-of-the-Art for the Best Care Paulding is not “just” a hospital. It is an environment of health and healing—a facility where people learn, are informed, and gain a new perspective for the future following major illnesses, surgery, or even minor medical intervention. The Emergency Department is designed with a flex unit between the adult and pediatric units for overflow during surge populations. The operating rooms are arranged to accommodate a separation in acuity of patients, increasing throughput and efficiency. The telemetry patient rooms are designed and sized to be convertible to ICU with minimal construction and the medical/surgical rooms are acuity adaptable up to IMCU level.
