FOUNDER’S LETTER

W

hen you live in a state where beach trips are commonplace in the dead of winter and “75 and sunny” is the forecast for much of the year, you might expect that the arrival of summer would not be much cause for celebration. But here at C,

we, like many of our readers, I’d wager, still greet the month of June with giddy

excitement. There’s something about the season, even more so than the rest of the year, that

inspires freewheeling getaways, outdoor adventures and the types of social gatherings that

photo albums are made for. While in other parts of the country you might have to travel a distance for these luxuries, we find them in our own backyards—quite literally the case for Art Luna and Tim Clarke, and Dewey and Stephanie Nicks, whose respective beach homes in Malibu and Carpinteria, featured in “The Way We Are” (p.68) and “The Bright Side of Life” (p.120), each offer a yearround sense of vacation. Which is why this issue is dedicated to our favorite local people and things. Take, for instance, model and mother Angela Lindvall, who has turned her bucolic Topanga Canyon hideaway into a wellness destination, complete with yurt and yoga studio (“Balancing Act,” p.116). This summer, she launches the first of a series of threeday retreats, helmed by a team of healers trained in everything from yoga to acupuncture

and bodywork. In the same vein, the beloved Cal-a-Vie spa (“C’est La Vie,” p.62) also offers ample opportunity for guests to unwind, including a newly introduced wine series that

encourages ending a day of relaxation and rejuvenation with carefully curated tastings. And

in Carpinteria, prizewinning rosarian Danielle Hahn treats a handful of partygoers to the ultimate escape: a fragrant alfresco luncheon amid the blooms of more than 30,000 rose bushes (“The Constant Gardener,” p.98). Of course, no summer is complete without plenty of time spent poolside, as cover star Chanel Iman demonstrates in the season’s must-have swimwear (“Making a Splash,” p.90). Catch the model in her big-screen debut this summer in the acclaimed new comedy Dope,

which was filmed in Los Angeles. In addition to these beautiful features, we also turn to four of the state’s most sophisticated bloggers for their top picks of the season (“Insta-Summer,” p.29). They provide ideas for keeping summer wardrobes on point and itineraries action-packed, but most importantly they remind us to have fun and take

DREAM DAY My perfect summer day would start with a morning walk to Cofax (cofaxcoffee.com) in West Hollywood for a latte (and maybe a doughnut). Next I would head up the coast to Charmlee Wilderness Park in Malibu with my fiance and my pup for a hike and a picnic full of goodies from John’s Garden (johnsgardenmalibu.com). After a quick dip in the ocean, we’d return home for an afternoon siesta. In the evening, I’d have friends over for homemade tacos and margaritas in our backyard.

HONEST TO GOODNESS

When Laurel Gallucci was struck with an autoimmune disorder two years ago, her prescribed elimination diet meant the end of her favorite indulgence: cake. Or so she thought. As an antidote to her craving, she began baking delicious paleo desserts that caught the attention of friend Claire Thomas (of food blog The Kitchy Kitchen) and the two partnered to form Sweet Laurel, a freshly launched bakery that is completely grain-, dairy- and refined-sugar-free, but emphatically full of flavor. The Venice-based duo’s offerings range from pantry items (jam, caramel, applesauce) to savory cookies and loaves to their prized layered confections. The pair, who host regular workshops, easily name a house specialty: “The jam cake is our favorite, because of the seasonality, and it’s the perfect canvas for organic flowers and herbs,” says Gallucci. “Sweet Laurel, for both of us, is about simplicity meeting beauty,” she adds. sweetlaurel.com.

T

he universal truth that women despise shopping for swimwear set Jude Al-Khalil on the path to create Bikyni, the L.A.-based online lifestyle label designed to revolutionize the dreaded struggle. “My vision for Bikyni was to take the frustration out of shopping by modernizing the experience to make it easy and comfortable for women to buy a suit,” says the former COO of coolgirl brand Reformation. The luxe line is not about the latest flash-inthe-pan trend, but a manageable selection of classic, minimalist styles with staying power. To that end, each of the five tops and four bottoms (the collection also features a maillot) comes in mix-and-match solid-colored Italian fabrics—plus black-and-white gingham, totaling no more than $100 for a full ensemble. “There’s definitely a French sensibility to Bikyni; we’ve also taken inspiration from lingerie and ready-to-wear, especially with The Crop and The Triangle styles,” says Al-Khalil, who manufactures in Los Angeles. Gallic undertones notwithstanding, Al-Khalil’s home base certainly played its part, providing ample on-the-job market research: “It’s always sunny in L.A. and you spend a lot of time in a swimsuit,” she says. bikyni.com.

LOS ANGELES

Although veteran L.A. designer Adriana Caras is best known for shoes and handbags, her jump to swimwear with the new Italian-made line LeSwim is far from unexpected. “I’m a California native, but also a second-generation Greek-American, so it’s no surprise I have an inherent connection with the water,” she says. Also new this summer: six Italian-made but très-Grecian leather sandal styles. leswim.it. Jersey rash guard with gold zipper, $276.

Basic Instincts

If any label perfectly epitomizes California’s cool, casual nature, it’s Venice Beach’s coastal-chic Sundry, founded by South of France transplant Matthieu Leblan. Its luxe printed tees and sweats sell everywhere from Barneys New York to J.Crew (with which Sundry is collaborating with on a sophomore capsule collection this summer). Things are also amping up with an e-commerce launch, a new creative campaign and an Abbot Kinney pop-up (until August). “Matt spent the last 17 years in Venice, so we feel very strongly about [being here],” says Co-Creative Director Mark Wiesmayr. Expect exclusives in the curated shop: “We made products [to represent being] proud of being on Abbot Kinney,” he says. “It’s always about escaping—getting away from your everyday and feeling comfortable and sophisticated.” 1415 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, 310-310-3593; sundryclothing.com.

Jewelry designer Becky Hosmer’s 12-year-old line Anna Beck strikes the ideal exotic exchange: dreamed up in West Hollywood, made in Bali. While travels to Southeast Asia originally inspired Hosmer’s handcrafted pieces, she’s a California girl at heart who’s influenced “by L.A.’s creativity and energy—it’s the perfect balance of city and nature,” she says. SoCal’s blue hues and Bali’s spirit are evident in her latest designs, which feature vivid stones: turquoise, representing protection and wisdom, and lapis, to promote inner truth and expanded consciousness. annabeck.com. FASHION trend f anything is as synonymous with California as its beautiful beaches, it’s trend-defining denim. And while the wardrobe staple is loved and lived in yearround, the casual summer months are the perfect time to test out a new pair. In pursuit of the hottest look, we mined a group of ahead-of-the-curve Golden State labels. The high-rise flare “is the silhouette of the moment,” according to Mother designer Tim Kaeding—especially in their lightweight, flowy fabric. (Virtually every brand has its own spin on the classic ’70s bell-bottom, such as Paige, whose latest offerings include a plethora of different washes.) As evidenced by the shredded knees on Levi’s and Current/ Elliott’s Elliott top looks, labels are steering clear of anything too pristine. Destroyed, distressed and frayed are watchwords for Frame Denim, AG and J Brand—

the latter actually designed a full capsule collection influenced by the Rose Bowl Flea Market. Says J Brand’s head of design, Mary Bruno, “When letting out the hem on one of my vintage jeans for length, I was inspired to expand the frayed edges. It seemed a natural marriage to mix the destruction and frayed trend on our dresses, jackets and tops.” The most daring take on summertime denim is culottes, the wide-legged, cropped trouser alternative. They require more styling than cutoffs, but the payoff is great. “Tuck in a blouse or add a crop top,” suggests Peggi Jewell, 7 For All Mankind’s ’s vice president, product and design. “Sophisticated washes like white and indigo will help you possess the forever-cool vibe.”

et-setting model (and part-time L.A. denizen) Poppy Delevingne has taken on the role of Jo Malone London’s inaugural brand ambassador. Here, her unique perspective on the olfactory art. What was your first experience with fragrance? My mother always had shiny, sparkling bottles piled up on her dressing table and she smelled so floral when I was a child—of lilies, jasmine and violets. How do you choose your signature perfume? It really depends on the season; I like something fresh and floral like Peony & Blush Suede when the sun is out, and for the colder months, something a little more intoxicating like Pomegranate Noir. Right now my favorite is Tuberose Angelica. It has an essence of red roses to it, but is muskier and sexy. What beauty trend never dies? Romance. jomalone.com. —CAROLINE CAGNEY

BEAUTY The thing is, this isn’t Northern California Wine Country. It’s Vista, just north of San Diego. The vintages are from Château Margaux, the esteemed vineyard in Bordeaux, France. And many of the attendees are keeping the chill at bay by wearing white terry-cloth robes. “This is Cal-a-Vie,” says John Havens, who, with his wife Terri Havens, has owned the 440-acre property—site of a 32-room destination spa, the Havens family vacation home and a newly renovated golf course—for 15 years. “Wearing robes to dinner is what we do here.” Cal-a-Vie is known for adding a layer of Gallicinflected luxury to the California spa formula of lowcalorie meals, hiking, exercise classes and massages. It’s evident in the design. Antiques fill every room: A museum-quality tapestry commissioned by Louis XIV hangs on the wall of the fitness pavilion; and a 400-year-old chapel imported from Dijon was rebuilt on a hillside with sweeping views of the spa and the surrounding hills, planted with 12 acres of the aforementioned vines. The Havenses, who spend most of their time in Houston but are originally from New Orleans, are devoted Francophiles who fill containers with salvaged flooring and objets during their visits abroad. They are also gracious hosts, and take their guests’ requests seriously. “We always look at the comment cards,” Terri shares with those assembled for tonight’s tasting, a group of 45 that is currently feasting on diminutive but satisfying portions of roasted salmon and beef tenderloin with organic vegetables grown on site, after listening to a demonstration by Aurélien Valance (a Margaux representative who flew in for the occasion, with cases of rare wines equipped with alarms on their corks to prohibit tampering). “Time and again, we would see the word ‘wine’ written on [the cards],” she laughs. “And so we listened.” As a result, the spa is now hosting semiannual wine events, which involve all of the typical health-conscious spa behavior, just with the extra motivation of a small pour of Bordeaux at the end of a long day of workouts, from the spa’s own fledgling Cal-a-Vie grapes (with reds blended with help from Ira Gourvitz at the nearby Fallbrook Winery) or participating wineries from around the world. Tonight’s toast? “To good health,” of course—which, from the looks of it, includes happiness, too. Packages for a “petite” three-night stay start at about $4,000, seven nights from $8,500; cal-a-vie.com.

The Way We Are A weekend retreat in Paradise Cove designed for entertaining, relaxing and just being

B

BY MARTHA McCULLY PHOTOGRAPHED BY JESSICA SAMPLE

ehind the patchwork wooden door of Art Luna and Tim Clarke’s turquoise home in Paradise Cove is a living, breathing world. The ’70s wind chime sings to a bright blue peace sign; the staghorn ferns, fed banana peels by Luna through their soil, nestle around an oyster-shell mirror; and bromeliads and tillandsias hang out on driftwood shelves. Every sign of life vibrates here in these tight, desirable quarters. Even the aluminum trailers turned into portable palaces and the golf carts that whisk owners to the beach and back, have their own personalities—much like the oneof-a-kind couple in their midst. “We come here to just be who we are,” says Luna. Paradise Cove is technically a mobile home park, though tucked between $60 million dwellings on the Malibu cliffs and inhabited by celebrities like Minnie Driver and Stevie Nicks, it’s arguably the most attractive in the country, perhaps the world. Luna, a landscape designer, FROM ABOVE Artwork from California and Hawaii hangs on grass-cloth walls in the living room. The kitchen, and Clarke, an interior designer, call it a complete with Viking range. The cozy bedroom sports “bohemian trailer park country club,” and had Pendleton Woolen Mills bedding and a ’70s shag rug. been looking for their parking spot for more than a year when they fell in love with the trailer at No. 52. “We knew immediately that Commune had designed it,” says Luna. (He and Clarke have remodeled six of their own homes in L.A.) “It was perfect and we didn’t have to do anything to it,” he adds, smiling. “All we did was redo it.” Though Luna says “the bones are still Commune,” he and Clarke couldn’t resist adding their inimitable stamp. That’s what they do; Luna transforms awkward spaces into secret gardens and Clarke creates beachy interiors—sand optional. Their “beach locker” here borrows from their travels to create a kind of hip and homey surfer’s haven. Handblocked fabric from Bali doubles as the bedroom FROM TOP Art Luna (left) and Tim Clarke among their wallpaper and curtains. CONTINUED ON P.128

ith the glitterati descending upon the South of France for the annual Cannes Film Festival, there was no better time or place for Dior to fete Creative Director Raf Simons’ Cruise 2016 collection. What was initially conceived as a Californian affair turned into a French Riviera escape to Pierre Cardin’s iconic Bubble Palace, with a highwattage guest list in attendance including Marion Cotillard and Dakota Fanning. Dior imagined the ultimate itinerary for the out-of-towners, who made themselves at home at the historic art deco Hotel Majestic Barrière and at the swank Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in nearby Antibes. As Cannes regulars will attest, no trip is complete without the ceremonial bouillabaisse presentation at Tetou, where Dior threw a decadent dinner party, complete with whimsical accents in the form of crustacean-themed creations by a local paper artist. Along with leisurely walks on La Croisette, flanked by the white-sand beach on one side and haute couture boutiques on the other, guests had the option of visiting the medievalwalled village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence for an afternoon of pétanque and lunch at the sculpture-filled modern art museum Fondation Maeght. The highlights of this invite-only getaway: a runway procession of Dior’s youthful ’70s-inspired Cruise 2016 ensembles and a Zoë Kravitz-deejayed after-party at David Lynch’s pop-up nightclub, Silencio. Fortunately, come winter, all can shop the soigné spoils firsthand. dior.com. •

dios and how to collect. Relying on Neman’s degree in fine art and Klein’s in art history from the University of Michigan, the duo originally launched by representing people they knew and friends of friends. Today Neman tours art schools, trolls the Internet and attends vital art fairs to augment a roster that features Anna Ayeroff, Gia Coppola, David Kitz, Travis Schneider and others. Past artists have included “bro artist” Dean Levin, whose work is owned by Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Ovitz, up-and-comer Evan Robarts and other newsmaking members of the Brooklyn-based, artist-run Still House Group. “I was looking for an aesthetic and vibe,” explains L.A.-based fine-art photographer and printmaker Brandy Eve Allen. She chose to work with Neman and Klein in part due to their taste level and ability to make concise choices about the number of artists and works to represent. “It’s hard to have authenticity recognized,” she muses. Tappan painter and textile artist Stevie Howell found an even bigger draw in the exposure she’s gleaned from being a part of the group; the collective sets up nontraditional projects and commercial collaborations with companies such as Intermix, MasterCard and Nike. “It’s a new world,” says Howell. “Rather than creating one painting per month and showing it to a few people…it’s all over the place.” She recently displayed her work at an exhibition at the Los Angeles Music Center and created a limitedCONTINUED ON P.128 edition tote

year ago this month I quit my job at the San Francisco Design Center to create art full time,” says Heather Day. Today the artist lives entirely off of the proceeds she makes from Tappan Collective. A 2012 brainchild of 20-somethings Chelsea Neman and Jordan Klein, the collective hacks the usual flow of the art market by connecting recent art-school grads with an audience of first-time collectors—forming what is, in effect, a meeting and marketplace for neophytes. Art can range in price from $20 to $8,000 and shoppers can pick up original works and editions. “Collectors can support emerging artists at an early place [in their career] and get access to their work before it becomes much more expensive,” explains Neman from her office in Downtown Los Angeles. For Day, new to S.F. after studying art in Baltimore, working with the group was a godsend. The artist had secured a studio in Oakland and was pursuing a practice of paintings and collage influenced by abstract expressionists Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock while still working at Janus et Cie in the Design Center. Neman and Klein reached out to her after seeing her images on Instagram. “I didn’t [initially] like the idea of my paintings going in a ‘shopping cart’ online,” Day recalls. “But they are doing something new and doing it in the right way.” Functioning much like a brick-and-mortar gallery, the collective shares the profits of all sales with the artists. For Neman and Klein (who has since left the collective) the proof of concept was quick: “People really do want original work—and not just a pretty image. They want to connect with artists and are looking for something that an artist touched, and to be inspired,” Neman says. The site has differentiated itself with discerning curation and editorial about the artists, their stu-

f Cambodian, Chinese, Greek and Australian lineage, Hawaii and Southern California native Chrysanthe Tan’s path is fittingly one-of-a-kind. The artist first studied violin with a bluegrass teacher, singing during lessons, improvising and working off of handwritten sheets of melody and chords. It was during middle school that she turned to a more classical education complete with orchestra time and competitions. “I’ve always favored pushing myself in order to reap extraordinary benefits,” says Tan. Her expansive education has come full circle: The Stanford and CalArts grad plays in the pop world as a backup violinist for Ariana Grande, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj and others. “I have nerves of steel… in part due to the sheer number of times I’ve set foot on stage at this point,” Tan says. She also collaborates with musicians such as classically trained guitarist Sean Hayward on experimental Balkan music and composes her own work. This July, her debut album, Stories, allows Tan to share her most expressive self. The 20 tracks of postclassical, post-minimalist instrumental chamber music are the sum of many early mornings when she would wake up “still half asleep and groggy,” and let her fingers “play whatever spilled out in my subconscious state,” she says. chrysanthetan.com.

DIDN’T GET IN SO much trouble, but I got in enough,” confesses Chanel Iman, as she heads for a second helping of fruit and eggs from the breakfast spread on set at a private residence in Pacific Palisades. “A little trouble is good.” The 5-foot-10-inch stunner, who has made her career walking the runway for the likes of Versace, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent, is reflecting on her formative years in Culver City, contrasting her own experience to Lily, the off-the-rails, ecstasy-taking seductress she plays in her first feature film, Dope. “I love my character because she’s really edgy. She’s wild, young and free-spirited,” says Iman. “It was the perfect part because nobody’s ever seen me messed up. They’ve all seen me nice and dressed up—like a lady.” Iman took a leap of faith last summer when she signed on for the indie movie written and directed by emerging talent Rick Famuyiwa. The coming-of-age comedy/ drama set in Inglewood started a bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival (the flick ultimately sold for $7 million to Sony Pictures); it was also the final screening at the Cannes Film Festival and is set for theatrical release June 19. Not bad for a bigscreen debut. “[This role] was just meant to be. The script popped up, and I wasn’t even thinking about doing movies yet,” says the 24-year-old, who only had a week to prepare with a coach before auditioning. “I knew it was something that I wanted to be part of because of the people who were involved,” she adds, referring to Famuyiwa and producer/ narrator Forest Whitaker, as well as castmates Zoë Kravitz, Quincy Brown and her now ex-boyfriend, rapper A$AP Rocky, who was chosen for the hip-hop-centric flick after being introduced to Famuyiwa by Iman. It’s safe to say she’ll have a built-in audience: Iman’s 800,000-plus Instagram fans watch the model’s every turn, monitoring her behind-the-scenes movements on editorial shoots, candid moments with friends Gigi Hadid and Chrissy Teigen and obligatory sunkissed Coachella poses. Iman courts the voyeurism, using it to her advantage: “It gives models a chance to have a voice and personality—a lot of my coolest jobs come through social media,” she says, explaining how casting directors are known to take a peek at a model’s online platforms to get a sense of who she really is, beyond her portfolio. “Some people just fall in love with you—who you are, not just a pretty face,” she adds. These days, being in the spotlight is second nature to Iman, who made her official runway debut at age 16. Born in Atlanta to parents of African-American and Korean-American heritage, she was raised in Los Angeles, and signed to Ford Models at age 13. Three years later, in 2007, Vogue tapped her as one of “The World’s Next Top Models.” Since then, she’s appeared in countless editorials around the globe, and advertising campaigns for the likes of Ralph Lauren and Bottega Veneta. In 2010, she earned her Victoria’s Secret Angel wings, and earlier this year graced the pages CONTINUED ON P.128

A FRESH SPIN ON NOSTALGIC ENTERTAINING, COURTESY OF ROSE STORY FARM’S DANIELLE HAHN By Jennifer Blaise Kramer Photographed by Nancy Neil

Feature (TBD)

Rose Story Farm sits on 15 acres in the Carpinteria foothills. The owners host private parties, but open it up to the public for weekly tours. OPPOSITE Owner Danielle Hahn is the 2014 recipient of the Great Rosarian of the World award.

s

ET A COUPLE of miles inland from Carpinteria’s famous waves, past avocado orchards and up a dusty country-lane road, lies the enchanted Rose Story Farm, a 15-acre oasis blanketed with 30,000 rose bushes presided over by Danielle Hahn, a recent recipient of the elite title Great Rosarian of the World. It’s the sort of setting befitting a royal wedding (and the working farm did historically serve as the backdrop for many fairy-tale nuptials), but currently Hahn, who distributes her flowers to local Santa Barbara and Montecito markets as well as all over the continental U.S., reserves the property for more intimate events like today’s celebration—guests from Santa Barbara and Los Angeles have gathered for the birthday of one of her close friends. The tables are set for 60 with vintage plates, heirloom linens and pink centerpieces full of nonfragrant flowers—so as not to compete with the food: a menu crafted by Hahn’s likeminded collaborator, chef Valerie Rice of the blog Eat Drink Garden. “Val has my same sensibilities about fresh produce; everything comes from my garden or hers,” says Hahn. Dishes of chicken with salsa verde, gem salad with green goddess dressing, spring vegetable quinoa, and bright beets with oranges are accented with seasonal ingredients such as green garlic, Meyer lemon, radishes and French tarragon, and plated buffet-style on fig leaves from Hahn’s garden. As guests clink strawberry shrub and mint cocktails (“The shrub is my savior,” says Rice of her mixology leanings) and admire a coconut cake studded with roses, there is yet another welcome addition to the alfresco lunch: a surprise operatic performance by one of Hahn’s sons, Geoff (a recent graduate of the combined program at The Juilliard School and Columbia University who flew out for the occasion)—an inspired touch that, like everything, fits with Hahn’s homegrown philosophy. “One hundred percent of my flowers and most of the food are from the garden,” she says. “I haven’t bought a single flower in years.” •

Feature (TBD)

Guests dine on the lawn. Thirty thousand rose plants grace Rose Story Farm and Hahn puts their flowers everywhere—in bikes, on cakes, on bars—but never on the dining table. The menu includes gem salad with green goddess dressing and Corona beans with celery and Meyer lemon. An arch of roses connects the upper garden to the lower farmhouse. The centerpiece features nonfragrant complementary plants and flowers such as hydrangeas, geraniums, hellebore and common hedge materials. In every direction, there are rows of roses, flanked by lemon trees and lavender shrubs.

MODEL ANGELA LINDVALL OPENS HER EXPANSIVE TOPANGA PROPERTY AS A RETREAT FOR WELLNESS SEEKERS IN ONE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S FAVORITE HIPPIE IDYLLS By Christine Lennon

Half yurt, half Moroccan Kasbah, the tented yoga pavilion features an enviable only-in-California view.

C 117

For a certain population of spiritual acolytes—yogis, chakra cleansers, shamanistic raindrop therapists— the village of Topanga, just north of Los Angeles, is the center of the universe. Or a vortex, according to local New Age lore, because of its position between the ocean and the mountains, where healing arts and eccentricity thrive. “I can feel a physical shift when I turn off of PCH and drive up here,” says Angela Lindvall, model, environmental activist and proud owner of a multi-acre property near the village, which she has transformed into a wellness retreat called Greenleaf Oasis. “It’s so close to Santa Monica and the [San Fernando] Valley, but it’s another world completely.” For the past two years, Lindvall has been devising the ultimate wellness retreat program: a three-night stay at her rustic property, which features a deep emerald pool, a barn, access to hiking trails and the requisite yurt. Lindvall has pulled together a dream team of healers well-versed in the language of “transformation from within”: food by Urban Remedy founder, acupuncturist and certified Chinese herbalist Neka Pasquale; yoga with Sukhdev Jackson, a renowned Kundalini instructor; plus facials, massages and innovative bodywork therapies. “Personally, I’ve been on this journey for a while now, and I’ve met all of these amazing people along the way,” she says. “My home has been kind of a sacred space where I have my friends over for yoga or to do cleanses. I had five acres here for a long time. When I was able to buy five acres next door, it really came to life and I knew I could open it up to guests. The plan is to start our farming initiatives and eventually grow all of the food for the retreat here, too.” The property can accommodate five guests in private rooms, or up to 10 guests in shared rooms, and can be booked for group events. “The idea was to create a space where people can de-stress and reconnect to themselves,” says Lindvall, who has plans for morning beach walks, hikes, even the occasional “ecstatic dance” class. “I want it to be fun,” she adds. The first Re-New Retreat is scheduled for this summer from July 23-26 and, if all goes according to plan, Lindvall will host up to five per year. Down the line, she may even expand to open an Ayurvedic healing day spa. “Something wonderful happens when people come together to offer each other support and compassionate understanding,” says Lindvall, who is speaking about the positive energy that develops among the guests at a retreat, but could also be referring to the community of Topanga in general. “It’s the power of collective intention.” Rates from $2,200 per person; greenleafoasis.org. •

C 118

FROM TOP An outdoor lounge at Lindvall’s Topanga Canyon property, Greenleaf Oasis, is built for relaxing. A garden path cuts through the lush mountain plantings. The home can accommodate up to 10 guests for three-day retreats. OPPOSITE Lindvall, a preternaturally youthful 36-year-old mother of two, makes a compelling case for healthy, wellnessfocused living.

TEPHANIE SAID, ‘Let’s just go live in an art project for a year,’ ” remembers lifestyle and fashion photographer Dewey Nicks of his wife’s idea to temporarily move their family from L.A. to the surf town of Carpinteria. “We thought, we’ll always have this nice time that we gave ourselves as a present.” Six years later, the couple and their now-12-year-old twins, son George and daughter Madeleine, are still happily ensconced in their “vacation home”: a high modernistmeets-New England traditional collaboration built from the ground up with architect Barbara Bestor, where a typical day sees the family rise with the sun for a “surfers’ breakfast” of eggs, tortillas, black beans and avocado, and conversation spanning everything from HGTV to iconic French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin amid a soundtrack of Page Cavanaugh and Peggy Lee records. “They have psychotically good taste, and they’re very astute ‘architecture people,’” says Bestor of the Nickses (Stephanie previously worked as a producer on photo shoots, which is how the couple met). “They lived in an Irving Gill house for a long time, then a super-modern house with Terrazzo flooring, and then a house with a Kelly Wearstler type of vibe in the flats of Beverly Hills—they’re open to fluid [stylistic] identities.” The vision for these oceanfront digs was yet another departure, and utilitarian in origin: “We wanted to be able to take bicycles, paddleboards and kayaks in and out of the house—to have a place that sand could come into—so, almost like a garage,” says Dewey. Bestor’s blueprint adheres to the neighborhood-imposed 13-foot building height cap while maximizing natural light via sawtooth roofs: “The house has a kind of Mies [van der Rohe]ian profile—flat, low and horizontal, but also containing a lot of spatial variation on the inside so it feels spacious,” says Bestor, who selected a “low-key seaside weather-friendly materials palette” of rough fir planks, plywood, natural cedar, cement board siding and stucco—allowing the exposed wood construction to frame the interior. “I’ve always been drawn to American light-industrial kinds of buildings,” says Dewey, whose clients range from Max Mara and Nike to Vogue and Vanity Fair, “so I liked making the structure part of the decorative.”

The honest environs are a container for a well-traveled amalgamation of Moroccan rugs, paintings by Monique Prieto and John McLaughlin, photographs by Richard Avedon, Bert Stern and Danny Lyon, statement pieces including a Frank Gehry cardboard chair, and an extensive array of objets such as handblown glass vases by Caleb Siemon—all set against a warm, neutral palette. The considered eclectic motif was shaped by the couple’s friend, beloved interior designer Paul Fortune, whose bold inclinations helped to seal the easygoing mantra of the home: “He upholstered the dining room chairs in cream suede, and I said, ‘Are you crazy? We have little kids and we’re at the beach! And what happens when people spill?’ ” says Stephanie. “He said, ‘They’ll still look fantastic.’ And that attitude prevailed—like, stuff happens and none of it is tragic,” adds Dewey. “We embraced the idea that we would just be comfortable and live with it.” Though Dewey retains a live-work loft near the Hollywood Bowl, and he and Stephanie keep an eye out for familysuited properties in Los Angeles and New York, they admit it’s a halfhearted search: It’s hard to beat their current lifestyle, in which itineraries are dictated by the tides (the beach is a mere 100 yards away), spontaneous jaunts to Ojai and Solvang abound, and they have the ’70s-era confidence to safely set the kids free in the neighborhood. “There’s nothing better than designing a beach house,” says Bestor. “Because what everyone thinks a beach house should be—that’s what I think regular life should be.” •

OPPOSITE FROM TOP Madeleine Nicks kicks back in the living room, beneath a Monique Prieto painting. The family gathers in the light-drenched dining room. “The sun is a huge part of the way the house works,” says Dewey Nicks.

THE WAY WE ARE CONTINUED FROM P.68

“Because it’s a small space, we did every surface in one giant pattern so you don’t notice the walls,” says Clarke. The rest of the “500 square feet of bliss” is covered in grass cloth and art from Hawaii and California, the two places Luna and Clarke feel most connected to. They say the trailer reminds them of a storage cabana in Costa Brava, Spain. “I love that it’s a mix of both Tim and me; where I collect California pottery, he collects surfboards,” says Luna.

“We both think of them as art because that’s what they are.” Their vision of a beach community with a relaxed vibe extends to their entertaining, which happens on the beach. Weekends are spent meditating, hosting family picnics and back gammon matches, and throwing a Frisbee with their dogs (“Charlie really is the Frisbee champion of the world,” says Luna, referring to their mixed breed rescue.) “We make a lobster salad and head to the beach with friends and some rosé,” he says. “What else do you need?” •

bag for Intermix. “It sends you down a rabbit hole,” says Howell of the opportu nities afforded by these commissions. “I suddenly wanted to do all this glitch artwork. Once you try one thing, you find new ways to interact with your aesthetic and show it to people.” It’s their strategic synthesis of the roles of dealer and agent that seems to be the linchpin in Tappan’s equation. “Our passions lie with supporting the artists,” says Neman. “We really care about help ing people to understand how and why they are making what they are making, and sharing their stories.” •

of Sports Illustrated’s annual Swim suit Issue. Though her modeling career re quires Iman to be based in New York City, she regularly makes trips back home to Los Angeles. And if her fam ily, the beach and favorite haunts like Tito’s Tacos weren’t already reason enough to commute, she’s recently been romantically linked to Lakers player Jordan Clarkson. Ultimately, she sees herself settling down in her hometown. “I remember when I did my first fashion show for L.A. Fashion Week and everyone was clapping for me,” she says. “Then I flew out for my first show in New York and no one was clapping—I felt like I was doing something wrong,” she reveals with a laugh. “L.A. is good because the people here show a lot of love.” For now, though, Iman won’t be sitting still anywhere, with summer plans already in motion for vacation in the Caribbean and Italy’s Amalfi Coast, following her recent trip to Cannes for the screening of Dope. “Acting is just like being a fashion model,” she muses. “If you’re not trying too hard or overthinking it, the pictures come to life.” Spoken like a natural. •

SUMMER 2015

C 129

California CAPTURING THE GOLDEN STATE OF MIND

STORY BYLINE

RELAXING AT LAKE TAHOE, 1959 War photographer-turned-good life documentarian Slim Aarons famously declared that “the only beach worth landing on is the one adorned with ravishing young semi-clad girls, sunbathing peacefully in the sun.” Of course, Aarons often extended the sentiment to pools, including this languorous summer moment in time captured in ’50s-era Lake Tahoe, a destination that’s retained its nostalgic, all-American charm to this day—drawing 3 million visitors annually to its snowy peaks and crystal waters, each looking to conjure their own version of the Technicolor holiday fantasy.
