fter 16-plus years of marriage, I have learned that a successful union is one that involves compromise. As much as I love always being right or doing whatever I want, in reality, that doesn’t happen all of the time (heck, most of the time).

A good opportunity to practice compromise is during the

planning of your wedding. While you may have always dreamt

of a party with 500 of your nearest and dearest, he may have hoped for an intimate gathering of 50. Instead of arguing to the point of exhaustion, it’s best to calmly decide to meet in the middle…and by middle, I mean closer to your number but still less than originally planned.

Or perhaps your dreams for a beach wedding were nixed in favor of the church ceremony his family expected—find a solution that makes you both feel like you won.

The bottom line: Compromise is easier said than done, but when it’s done, it makes everything flow. When I was engaged, my now-husband had requested that the flowers be lush, but not pink or yellow (his least favorite colors). When we arrived at our reception, the flowers were exactly those colors (our wedding planner corrected him by saying they were actually “butter and blush” hues). We laughed and went about enjoying our special day.

With that being said, the couples we feature in this all-encompassing wedding issue don’t seem to have made many concessions. When Sydney Michaels and Andrew Roth couldn’t decide on a big or small wedding, they had both (“Modern Romance,” p.120). Or take Edun designer Danielle Sherman and photographer Todd Selby’s fashion-forward, at-home wedding—the couple purchased their landmark midcentury house, then realized it was also the venue they’d been looking for all along (“Picture This,” p.108).

This issue of C Weddings is full of ideas to help you create your memorable day. And, if you both disagree about certain points, just remember the reasons why you are getting married in the first place. If you can master this step, your marriage will no doubt be one for the books.

eri Hirsch and Darin Friedman both know how to put on a show: Geri started the fashion blog Because I’m Addicted and is the co-founder of lifestyle video site LEAFtv; Darin is a partner at talent company Management 360. So after

Darin proposed on a ski gondola dangling above Jackson Hole with an emerald-cut sparkler he had stowed in his backpack, the Hollywood Hills-based couple set the stage for their starry weekend.

Geri enlisted the help of Ohio-based planner Pieter Bouterse and Annie Campbell in L.A.; Simone LeBlanc made welcome bags for guest rooms at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. Following the rehearsal dinner at Spago, the couple exchanged “I dos” at the contemporary Kayne Griffin Corcoran gallery. “We wanted it to feel like a really fun night out,” says Geri. As the pair signed their ketubah under a James Turrell Skyspace, guests meandered through the gallery with glasses of Dom Pérignon rosé.

Following the traditional Jewish ceremony, the party headed to chef Walter Manzke’s République for dinner and dancing. “We chose venues that have never had weddings; we didn’t really pay attention to ‘the rules,’ ” says Geri. The result?

A Hollywood ending, all their own. •

ike so many L.A. stories, the origin of Finch Events can be traced back to the elusive Hollywood dream. “We both came out here 10 years ago to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts—that’s where we met,” says Lars Francisco of his introduction to best friend and business partner (and self-proclaimed Grace to his Will), Stephanie Giles. In the ensuing years, they both waited tables while notching up acting jobs on the side before taking on more permanent positions; Francisco held the post of event coordinator for Beth Helmstetter Events, while Giles worked in public relations and marketing for Radio Disney and Universal Studios. One night two years ago, over margaritas at Don Cuco, they hatched a plan: to turn their mutual love for “dinners, parties, and being together” into an event production business with a bent toward all things eco-friendly—as evidenced by their moniker (“We went through a plethora of ‘naturey’ nouns and landed on Finch,” says Giles). Launched a year ago, Finch has already won over a devoted client base of brides and grooms, and been tapped for high-profile gigs such as Jo Malone’s recent Hollywood Hills bash hosted by Poppy Delevingne. “Instead of getting tired of them, people are really embracing cacti,” says Francisco of the succulent craze.

For a less-expected twist on the reusable centerpiece, the duo hang macramé baskets with greenery and ferns over tablescapes, and incorporate fruit-centric tableaus or potted plants like heirloom tomatoes that guests can take home. “Find a place that you love that you’re not fighting to make different: That way you don’t leave too large a carbon footprint by bringing in fabrics or indoor trees to hide walls, for example,” says Giles. THE DRESS

It’s hard to avoid paper products for a formal event. “Use recycled paper, and think of alternatives where possible: like a chalkboard or a mirror for your table plan, or linen napkins at cocktail hour,” says Francisco. Enter Christy Baird, founder and creative director of San Francisco’s recently opened niche concept LOHO Bride, an artfully curated boutique with the unwavering nonconformist in mind. “We’re really going after the anti-bride,” says Baird (previously of boho label Daughters of Simone), a statement evident in the Potrero Hill boutique’s organic-yet-urbane aesthetic, as well as its moniker, an acronym that stands for League of Her Own.

hat inspired you to design bridal dresses? I was getting married and there were no dresses out there that really knocked my socks off, so I decided I’d design my own. Describe your personal style. I always like to feel comfortable in whatever I’m wearing. That’s why I love a dress so much: It’s a cute, comfortable look without having to put together an outfit! I’ve designed is a reflection of my personal style.

I know that means I might be cutting myself off from a huge part of the market, but I can’t get behind releasing a dress that I’m not 100-percent excited about. Any fashion tips for future brides who are overwhelmed by the options out there?

The best advice I can give is to take time to find the dress that’s right for you. If you only have one day, it’s a lot of pressure and you might find yourself settling. Most brides have friends with multiple shapes and styles. Any tips on making all your bridesmaids happy? Rather than try to fit each of my bridesmaids into a specific shape and style, I designed dresses for each bridesmaid individually. I wanted my girls to feel comfortable and beautiful without pressuring them to wear something that wasn’t right. But with three different styles, the challenge became finding a unifying thread for a cohesive aesthetic. To that degree, I had all of the bridesmaids dresses made in the same colorway and fabric. The result was happy bridesmaids and a happy bride!

hen Ashley Sater and Taylor Fijan met through friends at a volleyball tournament in the summer of 2009, little did they know that their casual postgame flirtation over chicken fingers and fries at Manhattan Beach’s The Kettle would turn into a lifetime of breaking bread together.

“We generally talk about what’s for lunch while we’re eating breakfast and what’s for dinner while we’re eating lunch,” says Ashley, a pre-kindergarten teacher, listing local L.A. restaurants including Bandera, Milo & Olive and Osteria Mamma among the couple’s favorites for a night out. And when it comes to takeout, the pair regularly opt for a “pizza off”—an idea hatched by Ashley’s brother, which involves ordering pies from up to four different restaurants, and doing side-by-side taste comparisons over cocktails. “We can get the chili oil that we love from one spot, the fresh ingredients we love from another and the perfectly baked dough and marinara sauce from yet another,” says Ashley of the at-home date nights shared with Taylor, a real estate investment and fund management company exec.

So it’s no surprise that when the couple, both Phoenix natives, decided to tie the knot in St. Helena last fall, food played a central role in their plans.

“We looked for restaurants in Napa with farmto-table foods and a gourmet feel,” says wedding planner Cassie Dube of Bash, Please. “Nothing too old-school, more progressive.”

The feasting culminated on Saturday for the big event, staged at interior and event designer Ken Fulk’s Durham Ranch, with Paula LeDuc Fine Catering leaving no detail untouched: from a pizza station to passed hot churros to two bars with customized cocktails, and servings of french fries to nibble on during the bus ride back to the hotels.

Just when they thought they couldn’t muster one more bite, guests awoke the next day to breakfast bags delivered to their rooms, courtesy of the newlyweds, and packed with just-baked pastries and maple butter from Paula LeDuc, fresh fruit and Milton & Small cold-brew coffee. “No brunch is complete without good coffee,” muses Ashley. “But we would have sent mimosas if we could have.” •

“It’s cliché,” says Kim Hauck of HammerSky Vineyards, the Paso Robles winery she owns with her husband, Douglas, “but I always hear guests describe us as ‘a slice of heaven’ or a ‘magical place.’!”

A young Eastside couple collaborate on a sweet new culinary concept

rom their home in L.A.’s Echo Park neighborhood, husband-and-wife team Emily and Corey Petrick have launched Whisk and Whittle, a year-old venture offering confections and artisanal kitchen accessories that unites Emily’s culinary talents with Corey’s woodworking skills.

Before striking out on her own, Emily, a professionally trained baker, had worked for several local shops, including Milo & Olive in Santa Monica, but felt the urge to go solo. “I didn’t want to wake up at 2 a.m. anymore,” she says with a laugh.

When Corey saw her eyeing wooden utensils online, inspiration struck. “I thought, ‘I can make that,’ ” he recalls.

“So I went out to the shed and started. It just came naturally.”

(Corey’s “real job,” as he puts it, is film production.)

“The first spoon he made was so beautiful,” adds Emily, admitting it’s sometimes hard to part with his work, which

HE HAD A LOT OF GRACE in the way she carried herself,” remembers Agoura Hillsbred Kyle Blasman of the first time he crossed paths with his future wife, Cayley Lambur, seven years ago. The two were introduced through their best friends (who are now married as well) during a weekend getaway just north of Cayley’s native Toronto. The impression she made on Kyle, an insurance broker, ensured his return the next summer, when sparks flew. Four years later, Kyle got down on bended knee during a sunset stroll through the Venice Beach canals.

While considering wedding destinations in Hawaii, Canada and Big Sur, the couple had a realization: “We wanted to show everybody what our life is [day to day],” says Kyle. Cayley, an architect, quickly thought of the unassuming hidden oasis belonging to their neighbor, fashion photographer Philip Dixon: “I love going to people’s properties and stepping behind a fence to see something that you’d never expect—it was that kind of experience [that we wanted to create],” says the bride of the couple’s vision. After some convincing, Dixon gave his blessing for the pair to marry at his high-design compound, where the Moroccan decor is heavily influenced by the lensman’s travels around the globe.

When the day arrived, following a cool morning surf session with his groomsmen, Kyle stood in front of the living room’s candlelit stone hearth as Cayley glided down the aisle in a strapless embroidered Jenny Packham dress. A local gospel choir performed Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour” with 160 guests looking on.

After a short commute to the reception venue, Venice’s artist-in-residence space 800 Main, revelers enjoyed a rooftop cocktail hour while local jazz-rock duo The Mattson 2 played. A family-style Italian dinner was catered by the newlyweds’ friend Antonio Mure’s restaurant, Casa Ado. Guests dined under a canopy of eucalyptus and berries brought in to warm up the industrial space before dancing the night away, the ’80s surf film North Shore projected in the background. “I took Cayley aside during the the reception to have our own little thing being goofy away from everybody,” says Kyle of his personal highlight. “It was a special moment that I remember most.” •

ATYA SOROKKO and Gregory Spencer were strangers despite being raised in the same area. “I’m from Mill Valley and he grew up in Tiburon. We had all of the same friends. Our worlds intersected so much,” says Katya, a public relations and marketing executive at Restoration Hardware and the daughter of Serge Sorokko, the San Francisco-based contemporary art dealer and publisher (his wife of more than 23 years, model and fashion editor Tatiana, is Katya’s stepmother). “But weirdly, we never met.”

After Katya caught the eye of Greg (who works as a real estate investment professional) at a benefit for the Make-AWish Foundation, he asked a mutual friend to persuade her to attend his 30th birthday party. “He walked right up to me the minute we got there. That was six-and-a-half years ago,” she says. “We’ve pretty much been together ever since.”

When the couple decided to get married, the 175-person guest list practically wrote itself—their circles were that entwined. They knew their wedding had to reflect their shared touchstones: a love for music, local food and wine, and the kind of relaxed but elegant entertaining that Marin County, where they grew up, and Napa Valley, where they spend much of their free time, are known for.

The weekend started in Oakville, at Greg’s family’s Spencer Vineyards. Everyone played bocce ball, drank rosé and enjoyed a feast catered by Ad Hoc in Yountville (“one of our very favorite places,” says Katya). A rehearsal dinner at Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley, now owned by Katya’s employer, RH, followed. The main event was held at interior designer and family friend Ken Fulk’s private estate just outside of St. Helena, Durham Ranch. Ralph Rucci, another friend, designed Katya’s gown, which featured romantic embroidery based on Russian Tula metalwork, a nod to Katya’s family heritage, imbuing it with “the stature and dignity of a czarina,” according to the designer.

Personal flourishes were in abundance: from the floral arrangements, highlighting white anemones, peonies and garden roses that Katya researched during early-morning trips to the flower market; to a cart from the couple’s favorite gelateria, La Copa Loca; to the musical entertainment, which included cover band The Pop Rocks, a group Greg and Katya regularly turn out to see at S.F.’s kitschy Red Devil Lounge.

“Greg walked down the aisle to ‘California Stars’ [the song written by Woody Guthrie and later adapted by Wilco].

I walked to [the Rolling Stones’] ‘Wild Horses,’ ” she says.

“And when it was time for the father-daughter dance, we started off to ‘Sunrise, Sunset’ from Fiddler on the Roof, which is just the most traditional, emotional song. And then halfway through, you heard the needle scratch, and the DJ started playing ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ by Guns N’ Roses.”

“That was one of my favorite moments,” she adds. “It was very us.” •

AKE TAHOE HAS ALWAYS BEEN a special place for me,” says Keri Nielsen. “My family used to spend summers on the lake and the winters in the mountains.” So when planning her August nuptials to George Rhodes, her longtime love, it was the obvious locale to consider.

“An outdoor wedding was our No. 1 requirement,” she explains, but finding a destination that could accommodate 175 guests was harder than expected. It was George to the rescue with the online discovery of Mitchells Mountain Meadows, 80 acres of unspoiled wilderness just a 45-minute drive north of Lake Tahoe.

“Jenna, our beloved wedding planner, drove us out there to meet the owners, Pam and Fred. They gave us a tour, and we knew it’d be perfect,” Keri says. The couple chose one of the property’s three meadows, which offers sweeping vistas and an abundance of wildflowers. “Jenna took a blank space in the middle of the woods and made it our dream location,” she adds. “We had one design meeting and that was it. I’m in awe of how she pulled off such extravagance with nothing to start with but land!”

After a night together at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe (“We’re not superstitious,” jokes Keri), George went hiking with his

groomsmen while the bridal party, friends since grade school, got ready in the hotel suite. A shuttle brought everyone up to the venue for pre-ceremony photos, then Keri and her father waited, out of sight of arriving guests, in the cabin. “We couldn’t look at each other without crying, so we stood on the deck holding each other. Once we hit the aisle he started cracking jokes, so I was laughing and smiling the whole way down. I loved that walk,” she recalls. Waiting at the altar were Keri’s brother, who officiated the ceremony, and George. “My most favorite people in the world—it was so special.”

After the ceremony, the couple retreated for a few private moments before family photos. Then it was time for cocktails, speeches, a meal of either braised short ribs, roast salmon or vegetable quinoa pilaf and, of course, dancing, which went until 2 a.m., though the bride and groom snuck away around midnight. “Throughout the evening, we would stand back and watch our guests dance and laugh. We tried to take it all in and I feel like we did a pretty good job,” Keri says. “I just wish we could relive it because it was absolutely our dream wedding.”

They also enjoyed their dream honeymoon: two blissful weeks in Bali and Fiji. •

I

’M NOT IMPULSIVE, but I am decisive,” says Todd Selby. “I know a good thing when I see it.” And so it was when the lensman, known for documenting creatives’ spaces on his cult blog The Selby, first met his now-wife, fashion designer Danielle Sherman, nine years ago at a late-night concert at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Santa Monica-bred Danielle was working for The Row at the time (she co-founded the label with the Olsen twins, and is now creative director for Edun), and the pair were introduced through a mutual friend, designer Jeremy Scott. The next day Todd, an Orange County native then based in New York, changed his flight so he could stay in town to take her on an official date at The Hungry Cat in Hollywood. “I’m very proud of myself for that,” he says.

Six-and-a-half years later, he proposed at San Francisco bed and breakfast The Parsonage while on a book tour for his gastronomic design tome Edible Selby, asking for Sherman’s hand with a modern ring by Paris-based Noguchi Bijoux discovered at Dover Street Market in Tokyo. The wedding venue required rigorous scouting; it wasn’t until the couple bought their L.A. home, a midcentury residence by architect Raul Garduno, that they realized they’d found the locale for their nuptials, too.

“Everything was pretty atypical,” Danielle says of the intimate celebration; her sister Lauren Winnick officiated the ceremony (attended by a close circle including Edun founders Bono and wife Ali Hewson) in the property’s carport, during which pond-dwelling tree frogs nearby chimed in as if on cue; Danielle’s dad serenaded the couple; and in place of a cake, Elisabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson of Tartine fame provided treats including salted chocolate cookies and meringues.

The bride wore a pair of gowns she masterminded herself: a heavy silk apron-cut style with an angular square train and handmade fringe on the seams, and for the reception, an A-line dress with a ’70s-inspired halter neckline. “They were both conceived a few weeks before the wedding,” she admits.

The groom went retro classic, to match the surroundings, with a white tux by Miller’s Oath.

The next day, partygoers reconvened at Malibu Farm for brunch before the couple escaped on a honeymoon to Bora Bora. In light of their extended courtship, has anything really changed since they made it official? “The nicest part is introducing Todd as my husband,” says Danielle. “I think I still smirk every time I do that, because that’s new, and it’s something to be really proud of.” •

ARRIAGE WASN’T SOMETHING WE always talked about; it wasn’t really on our radar,” says Jon Brockett, who began dating now-husband Jason Martin more than 10 years ago. “When that window before Prop 8 opened and everyone was getting married, Jon and I were very cavalier about not doing it just because it was legally convenient,” adds Jason. But by the time the court decision came down two years ago repealing California’s Proposition 8, they were ready.

They started fantasizing about what kind of wedding they would have and who would be there on a long afternoon walk that summer around their Hancock Park neighborhood. “When we got back we were both like, ‘Oh, we’re engaged now,’ ” remembers Jason.

Their wedding the following spring doubled as a reunion for their tight-knit Southern families—Jon, a supervising producer for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, hails from North Florida, while Jason, an interior designer and proprietor of design store Martin & Brockett, had family fly in from Texas. The pair made decisions based on what felt most authentic. “We love going to Ojai and Point Reyes in Northern California, and we liked the idea of a rustic setting,” says Jason. They found everything they were looking for in the bucolic surrounds of Triunfo Creek Vineyards, set between the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu, where they walked down the aisle hand-in-hand and exchanged vows before 120 teary-eyed loved ones and their Boston terrier, Aldo.

Given Jon and Jason’s professional backgrounds, the design and production of their wedding was no everyday affair. A team of experts (helmed by planner Aaron Hartselle) was tasked with bringing the couple’s minimalist and understatedly masculine vision to life: Amber Moon created laser-cut wood stationery and printed menus on soft brown leather squares; long farm tables in the converted barn were laden with eucalyptus garlands and brass candlesticks; food stations featured Southern comfort staples including Texas brisket, pulledpork sliders, fried chicken and fried okra from Heirloom LA, and brown leather sofas were placed in the reception area for dance breaks. As an homage to Jason’s family’s market in Texas, guests filled linen favor bags with treats from an old-fashioned candy buffet.

Plans for a Scandinavian honeymoon were abandoned a month before the wedding when their beloved pooch was diagnosed with cancer and they had to schedule a costly surgery. (He’s made a full recovery.) Instead, they all headed to the dog-friendly hotel Parker Palm Springs for a week.

While many things remain the same, looking back, Jon contends that being married does feels different: “For one thing, it’s really empowering to wear a wedding ring.” •

STROKE OF IRISH luck brought together Mario Turza and Coryna Sorin, who first laid eyes on each other at a local bar in Portland on St. Patrick’s Day in 2009. But it wasn’t until another festive occasion, a Kentucky Derby dress-up party, that their mutual curiosity was piqued.

And by the time Mario, a native Peruvian, had to move to London for work, they were officially an item. In 2013, during a trip back to Oregon, he popped the question to Coryna, a client partner for interactive firm Instrument, just minutes before a celebratory engagement dinner he’d planned at The Allison Inn & Spa, a boutique property on the outskirts of Portland (“I finally got the chance to ask her to marry me during the ride to the hotel after many failed attempts,” says Mario, a marketing exec for Nike Football).

The pair, who both spent part of their childhoods in California, sealed the deal with a September affair at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in sunny Palm Springs—a favorite vacation spot and ideally situated between Portland and Peru for traveling family and friends. After a rehearsal dinner at The Saguaro Palm Springs’ El Jefe Taco Bar on Thursday, 90 guests gathered for an outdoor wedding ceremony followed by a reception, where the newlyweds danced to Johnny Cash’s “Rose of My Heart” and indulged in a family-style dinner topped off with cotton candy and rainbow wedding cake. “We tried to create a vibe authentic to our backgrounds: colorful, fun, creative and unexpected,” says Mario.

This was evident in everything from the wedding party’s outfits (bridesmaids wore mismatched designers and fabrics in a neutral color palette and groomsmen sported an array of blue J.Crew shirts) down to the playful Peruvian bull party favors. But the celebration didn’t stop there; in lieu of a morning-after brunch, the couple continued their revelry on Saturday with a pool party for all of their guests. •

Modern Romance From an intimate dinner party to a blowout bash, Sydney Michaels and Andrew Roth master the art of celebration

AFTER A FOUR-YEAR courtship and a surprise proposal at San Ysidro Ranch, Sydney Michaels and Andrew Roth were considering whether to say “I do” during a small ceremony at home or throw a larger affair for a few hundred people.

The simple decision for this relaxed pair was to do both.

Last fall, they tied the knot at Sydney’s parents’ art-filled, ultramodern home in Malibu. “I wanted it to be intimate, almost like a dinner party that turns into a really fun dance party,” says Sydney, who works in e-commerce for fashion brands Equipment, Joie and Current/Elliott; Andy is a TV writer.

The couple were drawn to the idea of a small wedding partly due to the flexibility it allowed them to indulge in the details— from marbled, hand-calligraphed invitations to the salt-and-pepper cellars at each place setting. The venue also informed many of the distinctive design decisions: Flowers were creatively arranged in water features and amaryllis stalks were “planted” along the terrace.

Inside, long tables filled the first level of the home, where sliding glass doors allowed for fluidity between the environs.

A dinner of braised short ribs and wine from the Napa Valley Reserve was served before guests hit the dance floor.

“It was so stress-free and I think a lot of that was due to feeling so comfortable at home,” says Sydney. “I love that my mom put on her slippers late-night, and that I could go upstairs to my bedroom to change into flats.” The couple spent their wedding night at Malibu Inn before heading back to San Ysidro Ranch for a mini-moon.

A few months later, they celebrated with 250 friends and loved ones at Hollywood club Hyde Sunset, bringing in a 12-piece band and catering by Katsuya sushi. “It was the best of both worlds,” says the bride. CLAES OLDENBURG’S WEDDING SOUVENIRS, 1966 “It was the beginning of a great moment in the Los Angeles art scene. Claes Oldenburg made three or four hundred pieces of white plaster cake, signed them and put them out on the lawn on paper plates,” actress Brooke Hayward told The New York Times of the appetizing art installation the artist created for the 1966 Topanga Canyon nuptials of his friends, James Elliott and Judith Algar—an event that drew a high-profile guest list including Hayward and her then-husband Dennis Hopper. A Pop Art pioneer, Oldenburg made the “cakewalk” as his gift to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art curator and his new wife. Taking leave of his New York City base in 1963 for a stint on the West Coast, the Swedish artist helped put L.A. on the map as a burgeoning cultural center, exhibiting larger-than-life work such as the vinyl-based “soft sculptures” for which he would become known. You can still get a piece of the now-retired artist—the remaining plaster slices reside in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum.
