FOUNDER’S LETTER
During this social season, invites to holiday soirees, New Year’s Eve parties and awards-show galas arrive by the truckload. It can become a bit overwhelming, if you don’t take the time to enjoy the fun of it all. From what to wear, to what to serve, to what to gift, this time of year can be easily managed—and actually savored—if you are inspired. Enter C and our little holiday gift to you: our winter issue that’s an ode to the art of entertaining. When she needs to simplify, designer extraordinaire Madeline Stuart escapes her glamorous L.A. life and heads to her Santa Barbara abode—a beyond-charming retreat in the heart of downtown. We pulled up a seat at her table for an impromptu dinner party among friends. The way she uses her environs to set the tone of her festivities is something else. From the interiors to her gardens and dinner (whipped up by Stuart with fresh fare from the farmers market!), the experience added up to perfection. Sometimes great parties can go all night, but the legendary ones can go for days. This was the case with the ultimate road rally in Northern California. Sixty women jumped into some of the most exquisite vehicles (think vintage Ferraris and Porsches) and headed through vineyards, redwoods and racetracks to get their vroom on! In between said adventures were dinner parties, leisurely lunches and stops at some of the best wineries, proving that this multiday party was one for the books. We bring you all the roadside action. Just as fun, but in a more sartorial way, our fashion portfolio sets the tone for the Latin flair trend this resort season. Shot in a historic California mission, the clothes are sure to inspire you to spice up your wardrobe for all of the parties coming your way. While not a California native, cover girl Jennifer Connelly feels as Hollywood as one can get. Breaking into the scene at an early age, she has been part of our creative landscape for decades. With her career constantly being redefined by interesting and challenging characters, her roles as mother and wife and how she finds a balance fascinates us most. The portfolio shot by Paolo Roversi of Connelly in her beloved Louis Vuitton further solidifies her stylish mark in Tinseltown. The late John Traina and his then-wife, author Danielle Steel, were famous for hosting some of the best parties Northern California has ever seen. So it comes as no surprise that their daughter Vanessa Traina Snow would know how to put together a chic space and host a damn good opening party. When The Apartment by The Line debuted its new home above Melrose Place, it earned immediate street cred from the fashion cognoscenti. Its edited, well-curated collections scream California cool. We get an inside tour from the San Francisco-bred savant herself. To make your own lasting impression this season, take cues from our editors, who have scoured the globe to bring you the best of gifting inspired by iconic C images of the past decade. From what to give (and get!), to what to wear and serve, we have you covered in all things holiday and beyond.

“I want women to see my shoes and dream about a holiday,” says Edgardo Osorio, Aquazzura co-founder and creative director. “I am always inspired by escapes.” In just four years since Aquazzura’s debut, the globe-trotting designer—born in Colombia, raised between Miami and London, and based in Florence— has created a fashion cult following among well-heeled ladies who go mad for his iconic styles like the Wild Thing heel and Belgravia flat. In fact, one could argue that it was Aquazzura’s chic lace-ups that made wearing flats desirable again. This season is an exciting time for Osorio with two major collections: one designed exclusively for Salvatore Ferragamo (the first time the house has used another designer’s name) and his own Aquazzura collaboration

with British It girl Poppy Delevingne to celebrate the October opening of his first boutique in London. Inspired by a pair of sun and moon earrings Delevingne found in St. Tropez, the eight styles evoke a mystical quality featuring celestial symbols and embellishments, but still stay true to Delevingne’s bohemian spirit. For the Edgardo Osorio for Salvatore Ferragamo collection, Osorio dug into the colorful archives of the brand where, at 19, he had his first job in luxury footwear: “Mr. Ferragamo was revolutionary as the first to embrace celebrities. Hollywood
was a game changer for fashion, much like social media is today.” Ferragamo’s rainbow wedge, the use of cork, and designs from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s inspired a playful and eccentric quality to the collection that embodies “that funny California mix of the two extremes from super-casual to red carpet,” Osorio says. “That’s why I love it here.” With Aquazzura boutiques in the works in Europe, the U.S. and Asia, one can only hope that its next stop will be California. Fingers—and toes—crossed. • HEATHER SEVERS Clockwise from top: EDGARDO OSORIO FOR SALVATORE FERRAGAMO feather wing heels, $1,250, cork and black polkadot sandals, $775, and beaded heels, $1,550, ferragamo.com.

Longchamp’s WINK-WORTHY collaborations with JEREMY SCOTT have become a DECADE-LONG statement for the French LEATHER goods house There was a moment 10 years ago when drab airport conveyor belts became instantly chic. Los Angeles fashion designer Jeremy Scott—known for the cheeky prints and cool-kid graphics that pervade both his eponymous line and the looks he devises as creative director at Moschino—created travel bags for Longchamp that looked like wooden crates emblazoned with the words “Fragile” and “This is not your bag.” The collaboration sparked an ongoing partnership—10 years and counting—between Scott and the French artistic director Sophie Delafontaine and her brother, CEO Jean Cassegrain. “It’s probably a world record in fashion,” says Cassegrain, who, along with Delafontaine, are the latest family members to lead the house founded in 1948 by their grandfather, who sold leather-covered pipes and smoking accoutrements on Paris’ Boulevard Poissonnière. Indeed, twice a year, Longchamp craftspeople produce leather-trimmed canvas Le Pliage bags in prints from Scott’s current collection. “Each bag captures my mood and the mood of the collection,” says Scott. Naturally, there have been some wild creations, including the grotesquely cool Madballs pattern (ghoulish faces modeled after toy rubber balls popular in the 1980s) of Fall 2014, as well as an oversize gold card image (Fall 2008) and

this fall’s Humpty Dumpty print. “Opening a file sent from Jeremy is like opening a gift,” says Delafontaine. “You can’t imagine what it will be.” The limited-edition bags are produced as presents for guests at Scott’s fashion shows and later available in Longchamp boutiques and online. For Longchamp, the 10-year partnership with Scott has also marked a period of company expansion. Delafontaine commissioned the initial travel bags from Scott for the brand’s SoHo boutique in 2005. “The store is so huge—there was much more space than we had in our other shops,” she says. Delafontaine, who trained at Paris’ ESMOD fashion school, also designed a capsule collection of women’s jackets and coats to fill the SoHo space, and that has grown into a full-fledged women’s ready-towear line, followed by women’s shoes. All were fodder for Longchamp’s celebration of the past decade at a party staged inside the John Lautner-designed SheatsGoldstein residence in Beverly Hills this past fall. “This is my favorite house in the world,” says Scott. “It’s the house that made me want to move to L.A. My place [also by Lautner] is a tiny version of this. There’s a chic and futuristic feel to it, and I wanted to share what I love of L.A. with everyone.” And so he did. us.longchamp.com. • ELIZABETH VARNELL

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME – WITH RIMOWA The 1920s marked the beginning of modern air travel and the golden age of Hollywood. In 1919, Hugo Junkers presented the world’s first all-metal commercial aircraft. It was made using the aircraft aluminum alloy discovered by Alfred Wilm in 1906. In 1950, RIMOWA presented its suitcase with the unmistakable grooved design made of the same material – at the time, it was the lightest suitcase in the world. RIMOWA was a real pioneer in the sector, starting the trend for lightweight luggage back then. RIMOWA STORE BEVERLY HILLS: 313 N. The Wheel DEAL
With its World War II-era LORE and extensive WEST COAST expansion, SHINOLA is at the forefront of made-in-America luxury
products they buy: Who made it? Where? Using what methods?” he says. “It began with food and now that thought process translates across other categories.” For Shinola that means bold, made-tolast timepieces, colorful journals, covetable men’s leather goods designed by recent collaborators Richard Lambertson and John Truex, as well as chic bikes. The latter are enduring, custom-level frames for easy riding. There is nothing cookie-cutter about Shinola. “Each of our new locations will be unique to the area they’re in to cater to the local customer,” says Creative Director Daniel Caudill. Indeed, Panis notes an affinity for off-the-beaten-path locales with a strong sense of community. The shops incorporate neighborhood partners for added authenticity (Silver Lake features a Pressed Juicery outlet) and showcase curated goods by local craftspeople. It’s all part of a bigger picture. Says Sky Yaeger, director of bicycle product development, “When you think about watches, journals, fine leather goods and bikes, they seem to have nothing intrinsically in common, but when you see everything together in our stores you understand the brand story very clearly.” shinola.com. • KATHRYN ROMEYN
For a brand founded in 2011, Shinola has achieved heritage status beyond its years: The Detroit label pioneering finely crafted-in-America watches, bicycles and accessories actually acquired its moniker from the defunct shoe-polish brand that inspired the World War II-era colloquialism “You don’t know sh*t from Shinola,” which was mentioned in a meeting during the modern incarnation’s conception. While the handle may elicit an initial response, Shinola’s mission—cultivating

the local manufacturing of luxe classic yet modern designs—was responsible for its immediate success. That and a rapidly expanding sphere of influence that includes four just-opened and upcoming California stores in Palo Alto, L.A.’s The Grove, Venice and S.F.’s historic Jackson Square. Company President Jacques Panis says last fall’s Silver Lake opening proved how deeply the brand’s story resonates. “The West Coast customers were among the first to start asking questions about the

MARISA BERENSON Eye Contour cream, Fabulous Oil and Body Cream, from $116.
What’s your first memory of creating beauty? I’d sit at my grandmother [fashion designer] Elsa Schiaparelli’s makeup table and watch her burn the bottom of a porcelain jar, and then smudge the ash on her eyes for a mysterious effect. I achieve the same smoky look with a black eye pencil now. What’s the inspiration behind your line? I’ve always searched for the best natural ingredients to keep my skin healthy, and one day I discovered prickly pear seed oil, the basis for my line. It’s rich in omega-3 and -6 fatty acids and calms inflammation. I worked with my holistic doctor to create the Fabulous Oil, which also contains geranium and sandalwood essential oils. Soon, I created a whole nine-piece line— from eye contour cream to body cream—
which I launched at the spa I designed at the Sofitel Marrakech hotel in 2012. Tell us about the packaging. I wanted luxurious gold bottles that reflected energy and the sunlight. I’m launching a hair-care range next March, which will have a more colorful design. Do you have a daily routine? I always clean my skin morning and evening, before massaging my face with my oil to stimulate the circulatory system. To start my day off, I meditate with light—having access to nature or the sun is ideal to visualize and do my affirmations. With Love Luxury stationery house MRS. JOHN L. STRONG and creative maven SIMONE LeBLANC throw an intimate dinner party to celebrate their GIFTING collaboration
Written and edited by ANDREA STANFORD
WINTER 2015/2016 C 107
DESIGN
Design (turn) Started in 1929 by Flora Strong, there are few brands as storied among the social set as Mrs. John L. Strong. Today, they are still setting the standard for handfinished cards and desk accoutrements, but with a modern sensibility. Recently, they celebrated their new Simone LeBlanc partnership with a festive dinner attended by some of L.A.’s most creative tastemakers including designers Clare Vivier and Lauren Soloff. C caught up with LeBlanc to learn more about the special evening and her new gilded designs for their signature notebooks, inspired by antique engravings and whimsical children’s book illustrations of the 1910s and 1920s. simoneleblanc.com; mrsstrong.com. C: Tell us about preparing for the evening celebration. LeBlanc: We wanted it to feel natural with pops of rich gold and beautiful texture, which was informed by the engraving techniques of Mrs. John L. Strong. And it was going to be outdoors, under the moon, which of course made sense with the “Dream Big” and “Shine Bright” designs of the tablets.
Talk to us about the table decor. My favorite Heather Taylor Home linens added natural rustic texture to the table, Hollyflora created the most elegant and artful arrangements in plum and cranberry hues, and gold flatware from Casa de Perrin did wonders to catch the glint of candlelight at dark. What was on the menu? Dinner was all about the talents of Saehee Cho of SOO N: an updated take on the classics—a coq au vin, butternut squash ravioli, miso roasted potatoes and a baby beet salad. What did it mean to have your close friends there to celebrate with you? It was so great to have this delicious meal, under the moonlight, with these amazing women. It was a great way to kick off the holiday season and celebrate the collaboration. •

Since 2009, Beatrice Valenzuela and Rachel Craven have showcased some of California’s brightest artisans at their biannual Echo Park Craft Fair. Their original vision was to bring together a small group of talented makers from their Eastside L.A. neighborhood, but December’s bazaar will feature roughly 100 of the top craftspeople from all over the city. As the show has grown, the fair’s intimate origins can still be felt, a testament to the pair’s shared aesthetic that Craven, an interior designer and textile artist, describes as “relaxed, artful California bohemian.” “We love everything that adds beauty to life,” says Valenzuela, whose own line of handmade shoes has blossomed since the fair’s inception. “We like things that are timeless and made with integrity. We’re always looking for invigorating experiences that inspire us and we love to share that inspiration with our peers.” Here, Valenzuela and Craven share a few of the standout artists from the upcoming event—each taking craftsmanship to another level entirely. It all starts with the well-stocked bar! A stylish martini shaker and ice bucket complete the look. Right now, it is all about the stemless Champagne flutes—easy to use, store and wash. You cannot have too many serving boards. Cheese, charcuterie and olives all look beautiful against reclaimed wood. And an oversized serve board on top of an ottoman makes an instant surface. We love tear-off napkins—so clever. They are simple to use but also look elegant. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2011, a Belgian family of five has found the holidays have taken on even more significance: “When you move to the other side of the world, your dear friends become family,” says Virginie Degryse, Crave and Cook blogger and mom of three, who is keeping her family’s traditions alive from her kitchen in Bel Air. What started as a ritual of baking with her mother on the weekends at a young age has turned into a
full-time hobby for Degryse, with the new self-published Crave and Cook, A Christmas Cookbook ($20), to prove it. From classic Belgian dishes like stoemp to an Italian-inspired eggnog panna cotta, the tome is as much an ode to heartfelt home cooking as it is to Degryse’s worldly background: “I thought the book would be a way to share my lifestyle in the kitchen,” she says. The video depicts the duo, their infant son and Sean’s parents moving through the day’s work together. “I had a friend come up to me in the supermarket, tearing up and telling me how much it touched her,” says Lindsay. “We realized there was more to what we were doing than fermenting grapes.” Thus lifestyle brand Revival Made was born, to encapsulate the familial connection between vines and home. Currently a collection of simple, elegant home goods, pantry, beauty and wellness products, the brand weaves effortlessly into everyday life. The story of husband-and-wife team Sean and Lindsay Garvey’s award-winning Revival Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon doesn’t begin in 2008, the year of its beloved first vintage. It starts in the 1970s when their families both migrated north from the Bay Area, determined to plant founding vineyards in the Napa Valley’s ripe soil. Lindsay’s father established Buehler Vineyards in St. Helena, while Sean’s folks founded Flora Springs Winery and Vineyard just a 20-minute drive over the Silverado Trail. Decades later, Sean’s cousin hired Lindsay for a summer job at the Flora Springs tasting room. “[Sean and I] started dating almost immediately,” says Lindsay. Inseparable, the pair soon lifted off for an exploratory two years in New York: Sean selling his father’s wine and playing with his band by night; Lindsay, a photojournalism major, interning at Spin. In fairytale-like succession, the pair returned to Napa, married, had a child and hunkered down to do what felt right: make wine. Inspired by the products their parents made, the label—free of the unnatural additives used in the majority of California wines—was christened Revival. Upon release, it garnered a staggering 92 points from Wine Spectator, but the pair was more moved by the communal

Awash with a vibrant glow, Marrakesh, Morocco, has long been muse and home to some of the world’s most creative minds. Think Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, whose Jardin Majorelle, a 12-acre botanical compound, holds court in the heart of the city. There’s Marisa Berenson’s colorful oasis (see “Golden Girl,” p.99), Paloma Picasso’s pared-down pad in the city’s Palmeraie area and Serge Lutens’ home just a few minutes away. Channon and Bianca Roe, the husband-and-wife team behind Ojai’s lifestyle shop In The Field, were recently drawn to the North African oasis for a buying trip. In addition to one-of-a-kind market discoveries (all of which can now be found at their boutique), the couple returned inspired and refreshed. Home base was El Fenn. The private estate was all but in ruins when it was brought back to life in 2004 by art curator Vanessa Branson (sister of Richard
Branson) and partner Howell James. Each of the 28 rooms features art from Vanessa’s personal collection and is individually decorated in rich, colorful Moroccan fashion. From there, day trips were made to Jardin Majorelle to experience the brooks, ponds, garden paths and exotic plants. They also toured the historical site of Ben Youssef Madrasa, which was built as a theological college around the 15th century—famous for its distinctive architecture, exquisite carvings and stuccowork and painted tiles. Morocco is known for its cuisine, and it’s easy to be partial to Nomad, located in the spice quarter, with its fusion fare and rooftop views. Here, they also found simple, yet modern, locally made ceramic dishes, tagines and platters that In The Field imported and is now carrying. Across from Jardin Majorelle is a food, art and retail gallery, Kaowa, that serves fresh juice and vegetarian food. And for a taste of both European and Moroccan fare, the duo also favored Le Jardin, set in a romantic, hidden jungle courtyard in the heart of the medina. And, of course, there’s shopping. Bianca jokes, “Rugs in Morocco are like seagulls on a beach! But it’s like finding a pearl when you find that perfect rug.” Each quarter has its specialty: fabric, leather, metal goods Continued on p.176

Think you know all there is to know about Miami Art Basel? With 267 of the world’s top galleries descending on South Beach this year (representing more than 4,000 artists), it’s impossible to see everything in four short days (Dec. 3-6). And that’s just the half of it thanks to a slew of mustsee new restaurant and hotel openings (punctuated by Sixty Hotels’ midcentury gem Nautilus and the Norman Fosterand Rem Koolhaas-designed Faena). L.A.-based art adviser and Art Basel veteran Meredith Darrow of Darrow Contemporary shares her tips on how to pack it all in: SHOW TIME • The de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space will have new works by the world’s most relevant contemporary artists; as the adviser to the collection I can guarantee it’s not to be missed. • UTA fine art division, with Interview, is presenting a film about Francesco Vezzoli and having a party on the Wednesday night, if you’re lucky enough to get invited. • After you’ve been through the main Art Basel fair, it’s fun to go over to NADA and check out what the kids are up to. • The Andy Warhol Museum is celebrating Michael Chow’s upcoming exhibition with a dinner at Mr Chow and performances by Beijing Opera singers. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED • Michael’s in the design district is great for lunch whilst in the neighborhood. • Francis Mallmann is doing a pop-up at the new Faena Hotel. • Casa Tua is a must for dinner at least one night during the fair. artbasel.com.

Misty Copeland.
On Point Written and edited by
ELIZABETH KHURI CHANDLER It’s been quite a ride for Misty Copeland. In 2014, the 33-year-old American Ballet Theatre (ABT) dancer published her popular memoir, Life in Motion, detailing her late start in ballet in San Pedro to joining ABT, where she struggled with her weight
and the sinking feeling that she did not fit in. Then this past summer, Copeland was named principal dancer, the first AfricanAmerican woman to earn the title in the history of the company. Southern California audiences have a chance to catch the iconic artist—who boasts nearly a million Instagram followers and a successful Under Armour campaign—in person in December when ABT’s The Nutcracker heads to town. “California will always
have a special place in my life,” she says. “I still have friends, brothers, sisters and their kids there, and now ABT will be performing The Nutcracker season at the Segerstrom every December. I’ll get to spend time with my family and dance on a beautiful stage with my company. It doesn’t get any better than that.” Dec. 16 and 19, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, 600 Town Center Dr., C.M., 714-556-2787; scfta.org. •

In 2008, 77-year-old David Ireland was frail. The onetime safari guide turned celebrated artist had been placed in assisted living for the past few years, but still visited his beloved Mission District home almost every week. “He loved living in that house and making art,” says longtime friend and curator Jock Reynolds. But finances were tight and Ireland had no choice but to put it on the market. Enter Carlie Wilmans. Blond, with an elegant, angular haircut and the confidence of someone used to leadership, Wilmans, the granddaughter of noted philanthropist Phyllis Wattis, was already deeply involved in the Bay Area art community, both as executive director of the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation, and as a trustee at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She had recently seen Ireland’s Broom Collection With Boom, a group of 16 salvaged brooms bound

together by order of decay, and was curious. So Anne Hatch, a fellow patron and friend of Ireland, took her through the house on a Thursday. “I came here and was just blown away,” she says. “On Monday, I called Hatch and said, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, but I’m going to buy that house.’” That was nearly seven years ago. Slat-
ed to open to the public in January, by reservation, the refurbished 500 Capp Street house strikes an intriguing balance between preserving the past and allowing newcomers exposure to the artist’s Zen-like work. Along with the opportunity to visit the home, visitors can experience exhibitions, access a digital study center and archive of Ireland’s work by appointment, and, in 2017, view pieces from an upcoming resident artist program that will allow Ireland’s work to continue to influence others. “The purchase of the house was quick and impulsive, but everything else has been very methodical and deliberate and always about keeping David as an artist and man in mind,” Wilmans says. Ireland had returned to the Bay Area (where he had received an MFA) in 1975 after extensive time in Southeast Asia and in New York. He immediately

CULTURE bought the junk-filled, 1886 Edwardian house that had been owned by an accordion maker. The approach to restoration, however, was more of excavation or anthropologic journey of who lived there before, Reynolds explains: “There was value in wanting to understand what was going on there.” Ireland set about uncovering what lay beneath in the home by scraping away wallpaper and paint from the walls all the way down to the plaster. Then he sanded the walls and varnished them a medicinal yellow. Once exposed, the cracks in the walls told stories of previous earthquakes, jagged seams indicated former doors, and whenever he added to the house, it was meant to be an additional chapter. When Ireland gouged the plaster while moving a safe through the house, he commemorated the event with a bronze plaque on the wall that said, “The safe gets away for the first time, November 5, 1975.” Time and the ordinary became something celebrated and recorded. Placed about the house were sculpture and artworks that he wanted friends and guests to experience. He was known for his raucous dinners in the room decorated with African ephemera such as an elephant footstool and mounted antelope head. Or, “he’d invite someone to come over for tea in the living room and then leave and disappear in the kitchen for 45 minutes,” says Wilmans. “He was leaving the person

alone to contemplate what the house was.” Guests would ponder his pieces made out of detritus from the renovation such as lumps of wallpaper in mason jars. Or his infamous Dumbballs, which were formed by tossing a lump of cement from hand to hand countless hours, until the ball became a perfect sphere. For Wilmans, it was a challenge to preserve the home, but also make it viable for visitors. Usually working with readily available materials, Ireland mined his own dirt for his projects by digging out the basement under 500 Capp Street. “He really began to destabilize the house,” Wilmans explains. “And where mortar had fallen out, he used 4-by-4s to prop up the house—like toothpicks.” Eventually, working with another one of Ireland’s friends, art collector and construction kingpin Steven Oliver, she was able to reinforce the foundation without moving the building an inch. The former excavation space is now another exhibition area and study archive. The opening in January begins with the exhibition “David Ireland’s House,” which features sculptures, drawings, and handmade furniture and other objects from the foundation’s 3,000-piece collection—plus a new work by former Ireland collaborator Tony Labat. But first, there will be a series of dinners in homage to Ireland’s hospitality. Wilmans’ first dinner party was for Ireland’s old friends and peer artists in November, paired with food by Angelo Garro. (“He said he’d do it if I was the sous-chef,” she says, and pulls a silly face.) It’s appropriate that they bring back the get-togethers that Ireland was known for while he was alive. Wilmans adds that Ireland attended every art opening in the city and was beloved by his fellow creatives for his support. “He was a wonderful person… he had a great sense of humor, loved to cook, was a great conversationalist,” muses Reynolds. But more than that, he was a memorable artist, too: “He had great imagination and a poetic sense of how to arrange things. He’d take dessert glasses that you’d normally have a parfait in, put concrete in them and stick a spoon in. He had a sense of things that would interest you and astound you at the same time.” 500capstreet.org. • ELIZABETH KHURI CHANDLER

PSLA’s inaugural winter gala brings FRANK GEHRY’s artistic VISION to Children’s Institute, Inc.’s Watts Campus Los Angeles’ Watts neighborhood has a diverse architectural history including 1920s bungalows, Art Deco storefronts, and public housing projects built in the 1940s. This February, Rochelle Gores Fredston’s nonprofit, Philanthropic Society Los Angeles (PSLA), benefiting Children’s Institute, Inc. (CII), is throwing an inaugural winter gala to raise funds for the Watts Back to School initiative and L.A.-based architect Frank Gehry’s stunning design projects in the historic district. The Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, who was introduced to the project by CII board member Gelila Puck, dreamed up a two-acre campus—set to break ground in 2018—that will expand CII’s counseling, youth programs, family support and early childhood services for
disadvantaged children in the area. Event honoree Sutton Stracke says the project combines her “personal passions for the arts and mental health services for traumatized children.” Gores Fredston adds, “As a mother, I feel humbled to play a role in this effort.” The project will bring muchneeded services to the area and also give neighbors a firsthand look at Gehry’s singular architectural vision. “At 86, Gehry is at the top of his game,” says Michael Govan, director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where a Gehry retrospective is currently on view (with a scale model of the Watts campus). “How lucky we are that many of his projects are taking shape in Los Angeles.” ps-losangeles.com; lacma.org. •

HISTORY Channeled Star Trek icon George Takei makes his Broadway debut with a story close to his heart: his own. Nearly seven years in the making, the new musical Allegiance, composed by Jay Kuo, was inspired in part by Takei’s family’s experience, when they were evicted from their Los Angeles home and incarcerated at a Japanese American internment camp during World War II. Starring Glee’s Telly Leung and Tony Award winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon), it tells a tale of a brother and sister who strive to save their family from this imprisonment, shedding light on an important and forgotten chapter in United States history. C 152 WINTER 2015/2016
The kickoff dinner was poolside under the twinkly light-filled olive trees of the Solage Calistoga, our home base for the rally. The second night, decked out in denim and diamonds, we two-stepped to The Bootleg Honeys—a local, all-girl, guitarslinging country trio—while cowboys did a “live fire” cookout at the Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in St. Helena. “Dress in the Era of Your Car” was the theme for the riotous third night at our sleepover at the Heritage House in Mendocino. Our finale dinner at The Napa Valley Reserve was a gala send-off with a silent auction to help raise more money for the two regional charities selected by our hosts: Global Fund for Women and Family House San Francisco. One of the night’s waiters turned out to be Susan McCaw’s husband, Craig, in total disguise. “He’d heard how much fun I had in past ladies rallies, so he went to extreme measures to see what made them so special,” Susan says. Our cozy, Zen-like cottages at Solage were filled with gifts from our sponsors, among them Vhernier, Michael Kors, Salvatore Ferragamo, Bentley and Bugatti, as well as note cards with quotes that alluded to the next day’s route. The night before our spin around Sonoma Raceway, a card quoted former world champion driver Mario Andretti, inscribed with the words, “If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.” Occasionally the driving was a challenge, but well rewarded upon completion. A welcome Pimm’s cup and a round of croquet awaited us at Meadowood resort in St. Helena after the harrowing hairpins of Trinity Road took us from Sonoma to Oakville. Heads turned as we pulled into small towns, cylinders roaring. Parked, we were a mini-Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, from the iconic Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and roadsters (there were four) to the ’50s and ’60s Porsches, Jaguars, Lancias, Alfa Romeos and, oh, yes, the Ferraris—of which there were six. “Is that a Ferrari 250 California Spyder?” one gentleman asked. “There are only about 50 of those in the world. And today, in Boonville, there are four.” He walked off shaking his head in amazement as we jumped back into our cars and headed through the Alexander Valley toward the giant redwoods. •

Every woman should know how to drive a stick shift—especially if you expect to join these 60 ladies as they zoom through the back roads of Napa Valley and the Northern California coast. My mom, Kacey Doheny McCoy, and I co-piloted my dad’s ’57 Mercedes 300SL Roadster on the third annual “It’s All About the Girls!” rally. It was an artfully curated selection of the best regional roads to drive, punctuated by exquisite farm-to-table feasts. Our international entourage of 28 teams of friends, mothers, daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters covered nearly 100 miles each day of the four-day rally in cars that were delivered by trailer, plane or boat—in some cases all three. “Something amazing happens when you throw women from all over the globe, of all ages, in vintage cars that have none of the modern comforts, and send them off on a trip together. The group solidarity of experiencing the drive together, in tandem, is awesome,” says Gwen McCaw, who, along with sister-in-law and co-pilot Susan McCaw, and Jacque Conner and Merle Mullin— all wives of serious car collectors—are the co-founders and accomplished hosts of September’s epic journey. “We all met while on rallies with our husbands,” says Conner. “They tend to take things a bit more seriously, which proved to be stressful for many of us. We talked about how much fun it would be to do a ladies rally—we aimed for a little less driving, a little more socializing, and a lot more laughter. That is exactly what we ended up with.”

As often as she is able to, Madeline Stuart leaves her L.A. office and hits the 101 with her husband, writer Steve Oney, and their two Jack Russell terriers, Beatrice and Mr. Peabody. Within 90 minutes, they escape hard-pressed city life and enter the serenity of Santa Barbara, steering their car straight onto the gravel-paved compound of storybook properties originally built as artist studios called El Caserio, where she has carved out their own private oasis. Any given night, “Casa Caserio” looks much like a Nancy Meyers movie, glowing with cozy firelight and vintage charm, as Stuart opens her doors to guests. “This is definitely far more casual than my house in L.A., where I tend to entertain more formally,” Stuart says. “Santa Barbara is the anti-formal.” The Beverly Hills-bred designer, known for her timeless yet fresh interiors, bought the one-bedroom 1930s Spanish bungalow on the spot a year and a half ago, both for its potential and location—tucked in a historic artists’ community downtown complete with its own neighborhood garden. Given that her Hollywood Hills house is “dark and moody” and filled with a lifetime of collections, Stuart says she wanted this home to be a counterpoint to that—white, clean and spare. However, it took heavy remodeling, heaps of white paint, and many hurdles with the historical boards to give it the movie-set feel it has now. Rooms are rustic-meets-refined, filled with Spanish antiques, and give the couple restful reading nooks, but not a ton of space to entertain inside. “I couldn’t have a lot of people in the dining room for a seated dinner so I had to do the trellis and heaters out back—that’s really my dining room, it just happens to be outside,” she says. A lined path from the dining room leads to a white stucco fireplace surrounded by three walls, where Stuart created another roofless room. Guests gather here among lush topiaries for drinks and late-night gourmet s’mores (her signature dessert and “last supper meal of choice”). While Stuart’s definition of L.A. casual includes donning a vintage YSL caftan instead of blue jeans on a Sunday night, her dinner parties here are definitely more laid-back. She’s swapped her luxe silver, china and crystal for natural linen, woven raffia and horn-handled knives. For centerpieces, she aims to make her mother, who
she calls a world-class hostess, proud, opting for simple potted plants, adding that the table shouldn’t be “overly festooned with flowers.” On the particular night pictured, Stuart and Oney invited close friends including fellow L.A.-based interior designer Elizabeth Dinkel and husband Aaron Meyerson, who also enjoy escaping to their second home in Santa Barbara. Sherry and Jim Villanueva came next, bearing a tray of cheese and charcuterie from their popular local restaurant, The Lark. Stuart credits guest Laura Collector, a Realtor with Sotheby’s, for finding the new home: “She called and said I had to have it, that my name was written all over it,” she says. And local ceramic artist Miri Mara (several of his pieces hold court in the home) came Continued on p.176

Wafer-thin and dressed in a long, diaphanous gown, Jennifer Connelly’s character Hannah drinks wine across a dining table from her handsome and smartly dressed love, Tahir (Anthony Mackie). The townhouse is decorated with exotic artifacts and cultural books. The couple appears wealthy and well traveled. The candlelight flickers; it all looks so perfect, even for a movie scene, which it is. But it’s an illusion. Hannah and Tahir are, in fact, a homeless couple who have snuck into a plush apartment and taken refuge from the streets to live a warmer, safer life, even for a few days. They wear their respite well, better than their life on the streets of New York, where she shoots up heroin and he drums plastic tubs in Union Square Park to make a few bucks. Hannah says she used to live in a house like that. Who’s to say where she’s most at home? Shelter, out now in select theaters and video on demand, is all about juxtaposition and judgment, something Connelly feels strongly about shining a light on through the darkness of the film. “New York has more billionaires than any other city in the world,” Connelly says. “And the number of homeless people sleeping each night in New York municipal shelters exceeds 60,000 people. To me, the scenes in the townhouse afford us an opportunity to consider the central characters in a different context. Do we perceive them differently in a different setting? In different clothes? Can those of us who live comfortably imagine losing all we have?” Pretty serious concerns, but that’s the way Connelly rolls: intelligent, introspective, questioning. After all, she did go to Yale and Stanford. Shelter was written and directed by Connelly’s husband of 12 years, Paul Bettany, who was inspired by a homeless couple who lived on the street outside of their building in Manhattan. (Connelly and Bettany live in New York City with their kids. Their son Stellan plays her son in the movie; they also have a daughter, Agnes. Connelly’s oldest son, Kai, from her previous relationship with photographer David Dugan, just went off to college.) After Hurricane Sandy, the homeless couple disappeared. Wondering what happened to them and what their lives must be like was the catalyst for Bettany writing the script.
As with many of her roles, Connelly becomes the character—mind, soul and body. In fact, she lost 25 pounds to play Hannah. “It was a choice that I felt made sense for this character, who doesn’t really know how to be in this world anymore,” says Connelly. “She can’t nourish herself. She won’t.” (It was not the first time she played a drug addict; Connelly made her junkie debut in Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream in 2000, for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination.) We’ve come to expect this intensity from Connelly, with her onyx-black hair and unfathomable green eyes, ever since she started acting in films as diverse as Labyrinth, The Rocketeer, Hulk, Dark City, House of Sand and Fog, Noah and Aloft. Next year, she will star in American Pastoral, Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut based on Philip Roth’s novel. Connelly was born in the Catskill Mountains of New York and grew up mostly in Brooklyn Heights. Though she has said she hated having her picture taken when she was young, she became a model at age 10 and an actress at 11. Despite living in the city, Connelly craves nature, especially hiking, which is what she loves about Los Angeles. (“We have nothing like the canyons that exist in L.A.,” she says.) She isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty— in Shelter, Hannah meets her match, and future love, in the subway bowels to argue over a grimy jacket—yet Connelly, a prominent fashion figure, happens to also be the face of Louis Vuitton. “I am a brand ambassador,” she says, “which is a natural extension of my longstanding relationship with Nicolas [Ghesquière], his designs and the work he is now doing at Vuitton.” Connelly also credits him with influencing her style, on the red carpet and off. “His designs are bold yet restrained, creative but precise, boyish and feminine. I feel very much at home in them,” Connelly says. In fact, in an ingenious blending of life and art, you can witness their strong friendship in that townhouse scene of Shelter. Look closely at Hannah’s long, gossamer dress: It is, in fact, the very gown Connelly wore to accept her Oscar for best supporting actress for A Beautiful Mind in 2002, designed for her by Ghesquière. That’s loyalty. •

Vanessa Traina Snow is wearing a stark white, long-sleeve dress by Protagonist as she balances at the edge of a plush, brown George Nelson sofa that’s displayed in the newly opened outpost, The Apartment by The Line—Los Angeles. “L.A. was in the plan from the start,” says Traina Snow, co-founder and executive creative director, of bringing the beautifully refined aesthetic of The Apartment by The Line to an airy second-floor space in Los Angeles (the original location in New York’s SoHo opened two years ago). “I used to live in L.A. and have watched this street really build up,” says the Manhattan resident. “It’s such a destination and you have to kind of discover it or know about it. We also wanted it to have the sense of a home and living space, and you kind of lose that on the ground floor.” It’s details like this that are certainly not lost on Traina Snow, a San Francisco native, whose eye and sought-after sense of style have been honed since an early age. The daughter of novelist Danielle Steel grew up attending European couture shows when most girls her age were still roaming their local mall, and her talent has garnered the respect of her fashion colleagues as a prominent stylist with impeccable taste. Among her notable industry posts, Traina Snow was a consultant to her longtime friend Alexander Wang (they went to high school together), during his time as creative director at Balenciaga, and she also counts designer Joseph Altuzarra, and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler among her inner circle. Between a culturally rich Northern California upbringing and her college years spent studying fine art at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Traina Snow really is the ultimate insider when it comes to the hazy, sunlit California aesthetic and clean, coastal-inspired lines. She discovered the spot, nestled in the middle of Melrose Place, one year ago. Through working with architect Andrea Steele, plus local artists and resources like Doug McCollough of DM/DM and furniture and decorative art dealer JF Chen, a cozy West Coast charm is infused throughout the expansive showroom-retail storegallery where everything from the antique Oriental rugs to the Apparatus incense is available for purchase. Local fashion labels
AMO denim and Agnes Baddoo pepper the walk-in closet, along with exclusive pieces like shearling-lined slides from Newbark, 3X1 and Jean Stories denim shorts, and The Line’s new jewelry collaboration with designer Sophie Buhai. Other sculptural jewelry from Charlotte Chesnais is also part of the fashion offering, and it makes sense, since like the majority of the items available at The Apartment, they are pieces Traina Snow personally covets and they fall perfectly in line (pun intended) with her day-to-day look. “I used to work with her at Balenciaga,” Traina Snow says of the jewelry designer Chesnais. “As soon as she launched her own brand, we snapped her up immediately.” Draped atop leather-backed chairs and across built-in window seats are blankets and pillows from The Line’s new private home label, Tenfold, launched in tandem with the store opening, featuring earthy colors and tactile textures that echo the easy-luxe look of Traina Snow’s lifestyle. “There are pillows, bedding, throws, objets, trays and candles that all fit into our idea of versatile and seasonless, timeless quality goods,” she says of Tenfold, which will be carried in the N.Y. and L.A. stores as well as online. “It’s all meant to be mixed and matched to build your own home.” She adds that she personally owns several of the furniture pieces, objets d’art, beauty products and clothing sold in her stores, and though she has been living between Paris and New York for the past eight years, when it comes to life in Southern California, Traina Snow has more than just this new retail space in her sight line. “The hope is to spend more time here, especially as winter rolls in,” she says. “I still have so many friends here and definitely feel at home in L.A.” Nowhere was that more apparent than at the store opening, which saw the likes of Buhai, Bella Heathcote, Lisa Eisner and Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa in attendance, the latter two of whom co-hosted the fete. “It’s been exciting to display how everything can live in another context,” Traina Snow says of the expansion of the brand. “It’s also really important for us to be in another city and to be bringing in the culture and people of L.A.” 8463 Melrose Pl., 2nd Fl., L.A., 323-746-5056; theline.com. •

and, of course, the rug quarter. Opened last month, El Fenn now has a lifestyle store named after the hotel, co-curated by one of fashion’s greats, former Ford Models president Paul Rowland, and hotel general manager and interior designer Willem Smit, who both live in Marrakesh. El Fenn’s store, which will double as a 35-person sit-down restaurant and bar with street access, stocks individual designers as well as vintage clothing and accessories, handmade luxury leather goods, jewelry, blankets and cushions from the Atlas Mountains, all in keeping with the property and its tony aesthetic. Off the beaten track, the Roes explored outside of the medina, too, where many crafts are manufactured. A favorite was Akbar Delights, a specialty store that makes embroidered kaftans and resortwear for women. After a long day treasure hunting, the ultimate romantic relaxation is the spa at the Royal Mansour hotel, which has long been touted as the best traditional hammam in the city. Obtaining a day pass to the Beldi Country Club’s pool and spa is also a welcome treat. The Roes will be soon be importing Beldi’s glassware, from the club’s own souk, one of the few places where glass is handblown and made the old-fashioned way. “A truly captivating experience,” Bianca says of their Marrakesh trip. “The ancient city, the muezzin’s call to

with husband Rick Perkins, whose family is one of Santa Barbara’s original ranching families. It wasn’t just the guest list that the designer carefully considered; she thinks much like a director (she’s the daughter of Mel Stuart, director of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory), and gives every single vignette and party detail hands-on attention. For music, she builds playlists off what she’s Shazamed in the car and then streams them from hidden speakers. Her menus are a result of clipping recipes constantly (her famous porchetta was written on the back of an envelope 10 years ago). She’ll run around her cottage in an apron, slicing squash open and scooping the insides out—for risotto vessels—with her one trusted silver spoon that she carries between homes, until the second the doorbell rings. Her parties, like her interiors, have that sparkling, cinematic quality, partly because she truly enjoys them herself. “The last thing I want to do when guests arrive is to be sweating in the kitchen, especially when all I really want is to hang outside and have a glass of Prosecco with them.” •

Capturing the Golden State of Mind
ALFRED and BETSY BLOOMINGDALE, Holmby Hills, 1959 An invitation to Alfred and Betsy Bloomingdale’s Regency-style Holmby Hills estate was not to be missed. Betsy, a lifelong Angeleno, was the doyenne of West Coast socialites—to this day, Nancy Reagan is her best friend. While the couple frequently hosted exotic theme parties and charity galas, this fall night was just a little black-tie dinner among friends. Fran Stark, the wife of movie producer Ray, is in a yellow dress near Betsy, who wears a white gown by Sophie and jewels by Harry Winston and Bill Ruser. Since 1959, Betsy has kept a diary of all the dinner parties she has thrown and photographs every tablescape so that she never does the same thing twice (she’s famous for the arrangements of her prized dahlias and zinnias). She even published a book, Entertaining With Betsy Bloomingdale, in 1994. Though Alfred passed away from cancer in 1982, Betsy, at 93, still lives in the legendary Holmby Hills estate.
