Founder’s Letter
You have accepted the proposal. Now comes the truly big decision: intimate affair, large soiree or run off into the sunset, just the two of you? Eloping may be a romantic and adventurous notion, but it can also leave some family and friends with hurt feelings and lingering sadness over not celebrating your new union. And besides risking offending someone, the bride and groom miss out on the fun of planning. Yes, I said it: Most of the time, the very part that brides and grooms have been warned about by frazzled friends can actually be enjoyable. Personally, I think it comes down to the plan of attack—how to pull off the wedding that best encapsulates the couple while staying on budget and with the least amount of collateral damage possible (you don’t want to upset Great-Aunt Ruth!). And so, for those who do decide to celebrate in a big way, this issue of C Weddings has ideas in spades. What I love about the weddings we feature this season is the way each couple uses the stellar locations of California as jumping-off points. They incorporate the uniqueness of each spot, and that, in turn, weaves a distinct beauty throughout their special day. With backdrops as breathtaking as the beach in Bolinas, the cliffs of Palos Verdes and the fields of Santa Ynez, the weddings in this issue prove there are myriad ways to make your nuptials truly one of a kind. After you have figured out the look and feel of your wedding, the location, and who to invite, the really fun part kicks in—decor, style, entertainment and food (and the menu, wine and cake tastings to go with it!). All of these elements add up to the overall feel of your momentous day, so choose wisely. Our editors have combed the state to spotlight some of the best in all categories. And speaking of decisions, few seem as important as the dress itself. Our fashion portfolio photographed by Coliena Rentmeester at L.A.’s illustrious Houdini Estate will surely transport you to another world. Set against a misty and magical backdrop, the best gowns of the season shine brightly. Let me also be clear: If you want to celebrate in an intimate way, a small wedding is very au courant. A courthouse ceremony followed by a lunch with loved ones can still be elegant to its core. It isn’t about the number of guests or how much is spent, but the thought and the individuality that goes into said event that matters. We’re honored to help you create yours.

What’s Hot Beloved for its ultrafeminine line of pastel-hued bridesmaids’ gowns and wedding day robes, online apparel and accessories brand Plum Pretty Sugar is gracing Orange County with its first brick-and-mortar. “Our clients wanted a place where they could hang out and bring their friends,” says founder, owner and creative director Charlotte Hale. Expanding on the online store, the airy boutique plays host to exclusive floralprinted sleepwear, honeymoon-ready rompers and dresses, home decor and bridesmaid gifts. Also look for jewelry from Lulu Designs, stationery sets from Rifle Paper Co. and Herbivore Botanicals’ all-natural lip balm. With the new store in full swing, Hale shows no signs of slowing down. This
fall, Plum Pretty Sugar’s bridesmaid dress collection, PPS Couture, will debut pastel floral gowns in new colorways, as well as solid-colored garments inspired by “midsummer days and ballet; bohemian, but classical, all at the same time,” says Hale. Like all of her designs, “the silhouettes are flowing and graceful with a sense of movement and whimsy.” Village at La Floresta, 3349 E. For her Valentine’s Day nuptials to music producer Jimmy Iovine at friend David Geffen’s estate in Beverly Hills, L.A.-based model Liberty Ross did something decidedly un-bridal: She paired a vintage black Givenchy Haute Couture gown by John Galliano with a black veil and headpiece designed by British friend Stephen Jones. Her choice for the family blessing the day before—a silk Dior Haute Couture also by John Galliano—was as practical as it was pretty; she repurposed it for the Vanity Fair Oscar party just two weeks later. CIVILIZED PURSUITS
After deliberating on their all-important venue choice, Rebecca Sweeney and Zac Russell decided the Sunken Gardens adjacent to the Spanish Revival-style Santa Barbara Courthouse was exactly what they were looking for. “I didn’t even think about it being a courthouse, I just loved the setting,” says Sweeney, who worked at Burberry London before joining C earlier this year as market editor. Russell, a marketing specialist at Red Bull, proposed in their native London with a round-cut diamond atop a rose gold band before the couple hopped the pond to start their new life in California. Six months later, they invited 65 of their nearest and dearest for the intimate ceremony. Afterward, guests toured Santa Barbara aboard a trolley before dinner at Café Stella and drinks at Red’s Bar in the Funk Zone. “It was so nice to show friends from London a bit of California,” says the bride. “Everyone left feeling very jealous.” SAN TA BA R BARACO U RT H O U SE .O R G Garland by ZOË BROWNLOW, zoenyasadesigns.com.

Clockwise from below: Romantic centerpieces. A garden rose bouquet paired with clematis, spotted begonia, and pampas grass foraged near the ceremony site. Blue viburnum and selenite boutonnieres. A simple leafy arrangement with geodes.
San Francisco floral company STUDIO MONDINE wins over California couples with its LANDSCAPE to TABLESCAPE approach For former freelance florists Ivanka Matsuba and Amanda Luu, joining forces stemmed from a mutual admiration: “We kept running into each other weekend after weekend, and grew to love [one another’s] designs and, more importantly, how the other worked,” explains Bay Area native Luu. And with that, the pair formed Studio Mondine, their nearly two-year-old floral company rooted in the Mission District, which borrows its hardworking ethos as well as its moniker from the weed-picking Mondine women of 19th-century Italy. Each of their discerning and seasonally dictated creations seeks to balance an overgrown, lush English garden aesthetic with the sculptural art of Japanese ikebana,
resulting in high-impact arrangements made with everything from immature blueberry branches to gray reindeer moss and foraged, dried clematis puffs. “The more unusual and special, the more we love them,” says Matsuba. The duo notes that this fall’s wedding palette will see a shift toward more earthy, muted colors as well as dried elements and minimalist moments, aligning perfectly with the studio’s new ikebanainspired vessels in collaboration with local ceramist Daniel Karvasales. To that end, Matsuba and Luu also offer design consultation on details down to stationery, linens and flatware, each bestowing their own unique touch. “Ivanka looks at the trees, and I look at the forest,” explains Luu of their differing perspectives, which add up to one shared philosophy upheld since day one: “Keep it simple, yet striking.” studiomondine.com. • LINDSAY KINDELON

When fashion publicist Sahar Sanjar became engaged to Bobby Debjan, owner of a real estate appraisal firm, her longtime client Elie Saab had something special in mind. “He said, ‘I’m going to make you a dress no one else has ever worn,’” recalls the owner of laChambre PR, who shared her own inspiration with Saab: “my mother’s wedding gown with illusion sleeves from her 1979 wedding in Tehran.” The product of three months of work, the blush-colored dress Saab created features point d’esprit tulle, silk and sequined beadwork, and tulip motifs (florals for the wedding, executed by Sanjar’s mother’s company, The Yellow Vase, included tulips to match). A cascading train, a double veil and a Swarovski beaded headpiece, also designed by Saab, add a dramatic finish to the breathtaking silhouette. “I put it on a mannequin hidden away in my office for a month before the wedding,” Sanjar says. “I’d look at it every now and again and say, ‘I can’t wait to wear you.’” • MOLLY CREEDEN

“Our pieces are the perfect bridge between exoticism, boldness and elegance,” says Setenay Osman, CEO and creative director of Santa Barbara-based fine jewelry line Daniel Gibbings. The brand’s one-of-a-kind engagement and wedding rings that speak to a range of styles and self-expressions (hammered gold, openwork lattice, multilayered metalwork) are a good match for millennials, who are changing the way jewelers think about and design rings. “They’re highly independent and don’t like traditions as much as their predecessors,” Osman observes. “They’re also the generation that brought back yellow gold.” Those customers and others will appreciate Daniel Gibbings for Forevermark, a new collaboration melding Gibbings’ unique, artistic designs with the longstanding diamond brand known for its rare and responsibly sourced diamonds. “The journey of a diamond is a question we are asked by every young person,” says Osman. From Caroline Kennedy to Christina Hendricks, few brides can resist the allure of a Carolina Herrera wedding gown. Whether cascading over a shoulder or swept up in a chignon, a bride’s hair catches a little extra light with a comb, headband or hairpin from the Atelier Swarovski by Peter Pilotto Arbol Collection. Winners of the 2015 inaugural Swarovski Collective prize, Pilotto and fellow designer Christopher de Vos created the 14-piece crystal and rhodiumfinish collection (featuring neutral and multicolored crystals) as part of their first jewelry line, which puts a soft touch on patterns inspired by modern art and nature—two things a California bride is bound to know a bit about. Hedi Slimane paid a ’90s-style homage to Courtney Love by sending out a string of models donning delicate diamanté tiaras at Saint Laurent’s Spring 2016 show—and instructed via live-tweet that it be “worn with everything.” Interpretations were also aplenty recently on the runways of Louis Vuitton, who subverted the femininity of the accessory with a futuristic take, while ornate flower and fauna metalwork ver-
sions at Dolce & Gabbana commanded a more imperial presence. If that’s not enough incentive, this fall, look for Assouline’s stunning three-volume book set dedicated to the venerable Parisian jeweler Chaumet, who continues to reinvent the magical adornment—its first opulent tiaras were created for Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais (the first wife of Napoleon I)—for each new age. • CAROLINE CAGNEY OJAI VALLEY INN & SPA’s Casa Elar.

Festivities kicked off with an alfresco raw bar and caviar station (180 guests consumed almost 5 pounds of said delicacy), followed by a seated dinner of gnocchi with lobster and filet mignon under the eaves of the barn. In keeping with the theme, Lauren paid homage to her beloved steed, Magnolia, with a sugar magnolia blossom-adorned cake by Perfect Endings. After dinner, the party continued in the cigar lounge and at the specialty Scotch bar, a nod to Brian’s favorite tipple. But the indulgences didn’t end there. “I have been riding and showing hunter/jumper horses for over 26 years, so the old barn at Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel was the perfect place to celebrate,” says Lauren Long of the venue she and Brian Yengoyan chose for their wedding. Engaged in 2014 (Lauren, a fitness instructor, and Brian, a real estate developer, first connected at a Fourth of July party two years earlier), the Fresno natives tasked wedding planner Laurie Arons with finding a location suited to an affair that would be “magical, unique and full of intrigue,” says the bride. “The overall vision built upon the pastoral beauty of the preserve and Lauren’s passion for all things equestrian,” says Arons, who incorporated the theme in such details as vintage trophies planted amid the flowers and linen napkins with custom horseshoe embroidery. Beyond that, the focus was on the food. The couple turned to award-winning San Francisco chef Traci Des Jardins of Jardinière fame, who brought her signature level of Cal-French sophistication and focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients to the eve-

As a caterer and an artist, she relishes the challenge of designing unique menus for the big day. “A wedding meal is already so symbolic, I love the idea of creating a narrative within the meal,” Cho says. “For example, I’ll create a loose interpretation of a couple’s first date as an appetizer course, or a Mediterranean vacation might become a meze spread for guests to graze on. Cho’s stylish and sophisticated food has fast become a word-of-mouth favorite among tastemakers, but perhaps most striking is her attention to detail. “I like to handwrite my work before transcribing it onto a computer,” says Cho, who has a master’s in writing from CalArts. “I use the same process with menu planning. I painstakingly draw out every detail because it forces me to edit the dish and almost always improves it.” Cho draws on her Korean culture to layer flavors with seasonal produce and exquisite garnishes such as cucumber blossoms or radish flowers, as much for their beauty as their subtle spice. At a recent bridal shower, she was inspired by a favorite family recipe to create delicate short-rib finger sandwiches—a play on Korean braised short ribs and a banh mi

“He said that it was love at first sight, which is kind of embarrassing because he was looking at a picture of me on Facebook,” says Libby Mintz of her now husband, Donovan Leitch. (Their mutual “friend” was the bride’s older sister Julie, a singer, who had performed with Donovan’s rock band Camp Freddy.) Since Libby was living in Texas at the time—on a break from an acting career in Los Angeles—Donovan decided to fly to Austin to take his online crush on their first date and the rest, as they say, is history. During a whirlwind European holiday for their one-year anniversary, Donovan’s daughter from a previous marriage, Violet, now 12, selected a 1930s Art Deco sparkler for her dad’s proposal in London. Back in Los Angeles the following month, inside a dressing room at Monique Lhuillier, Libby noticed something wasn’t quite right with the fit of her gown. “I thought, ‘Oh, it’s probably from all the pasta we just had in Italy,’” she recalls. As it turns out, she was a few months pregnant and plans for a big wedding were temporarily put on hold. Six short months after “D3” (Donovan III) was born, the couple joined 275 guests

“The night we met, we were both like, ‘What are you doing tomorrow?’” recalls artist and fine art photographer Gillian Bostock of the instant connection she felt with her future husband, Cameron Ewing, a creative director at Facebook. They were introduced at an art opening in San Francisco in 2012, and two years later to the day, Cameron proposed during a hike in Big Sur, presenting a solitary diamond in a classic Tiffany & Co. setting. The couple chose the Peace Barn, a private property in Bolinas, West Marin, as their venue, reserving a fall date that coincided with a full moon. “One of the first times we went to Big Sur, we saw this full moon dancing on the ocean’s surface—it was this incredible moment,” says Gillian, who also incorporates celestial bodies in her art practice. The nuptials took on a lunar theme for the invitations, menus and table numbers—all designed and screen-printed by Cameron. The bride hand-painted place cards, and also lent her touch to the dessert: three almond citrus syrup cakes with buttercream frosting and berries, a recipe from Yotam Ottolenghi’s Jerusalem: A Cookbook.

It’s a rare occurrence that one meets the love of their life at a Los Angeles club or, in this case, just outside of one. Marc Harpster bumped into Ashley Lewis and her friends upon exiting Nicole Richie’s birthday party (Marc was her agent at the time) in 2004. The group decided to continue the party at a friend’s house, where he and Ashley bonded over a shared love of Led Zeppelin. “She just had this aura that captured me. She was very quiet, but there was something about her,” says Marc. Fast-forward 10 years, Marc proposed to Ashley, a director of editorial and e-commerce and a stylist for Venice’s Heist Boutique, at the Parker Palm Springs. Soon after that, Ashley’s vision for the

big day began to unfold: “I wanted it to be whimsical, rock ’n’ roll and traditional,” she says, adding that Mexico was their destination of choice. With that, the Venice-based pair assembled 70 friends and family members at the Papaya Playa Project hotel’s Casa Palapa residence in Tulum during late spring last year. The ceremony commenced at the property’s breezy, open chapel overlooking the sea, where a Spanish guitarist strummed Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California” as Ashley glided down the aisle in a rare unlined lace Elie Saab gown (“Once I found it, I bought it straight from Paris without even trying it on!” she says proudly). Kelsey and Brandon share an intimate moment at THE LOFT ON PINE following their first look. “After going back and forth about whether or not to write our own vows, we finally decided to write each other letters and read them during our first look. “Our romance started through that little crack in between the seats on the plane,” says dancer Kelsey Tadin, recalling her fortuitous encounter with San Diego Padres pitcher Brandon Maurer on a flight from Phoenix to Orange County eight years ago. “We caught each other’s eye in the terminal and he ended up sitting directly behind me,” says Kelsey. His opening line? “Asking to use my overhead compartment,” she says. “After lots of laughs and interesting conversation, we both felt as if we had known each other forever.” Six years later, Brandon got down on one knee and presented a custom emeraldcut ring at a seaside restaurant in Seattle (he previously played for the Mariners). “I knew she was the one when we got through the first baseball season apart,” says Brandon. “Time away from each other made us grow closer every day.” On a Saturday in December, the couple exchanged vows before 105 guests at Wayfarers Chapel, a breathtaking modernist glass church set along the cliffs of Palos Verdes. “It’s funny how much time you spend planning every last detail of the reception, but when it comes down to it, the

ceremony is what it’s all about,” Kelsey says. Following the “I do’s,” a trolley escorted the wedding party from the chapel to The Loft on Pine, a historic brick venue in Long Beach. Fairy light-adorned pine trees, garlands and ferns imbued the 1903 urban gem with an organic elegance, while candles along the bar, floor and tables—even filling an entire bookcase— created a soft, romantic glow. “I wanted it to feel like the warm, cozy holiday party we all wish we went to every year,” says Kelsey. In fact, guests slipped their gifts under an array of large-scale Christmas trees, and white reindeer figurines huddled on the dessert table. “Cheesy? Maybe.
But I loved it,” she says. The intimate affair continued into the night with live tunes, flowing cocktails and a first dance to “I Got You” by Jack Johnson. Two days later, Kelsey and Brandon’s story came full circle as they hopped on a plane together as husband and wife, en route to their Hawaiian honeymoon. • VENUES Wayfarers Chapel in Palos Verdes for the ceremony, The Loft on Pine in Long Beach for the reception PLANNER Nicole Dines of Carly Rae Weddings FLORIST Primary Petals ENTERTAINMENT Django Foxtrot band, Dart DJ RENTALS Baker Party Rentals, Circa Rentals, Dish Wish, Casa de Perrin GOWN Hayley Paige skirt and bespoke top by Lana Gerimovich of Alis Fashion Design SUIT J.Hilburn STATIONERY Katherine Ross of Script Merchant

L.A.-born Jamie was there with her newly rescued, three-legged short-haired German pointer, Jackson, and N.Y.-native Jeremy was with his rescued mutt, Ella. The two recently relocated dog owners were still almost destined to never connect (“I thought he was gay and he thought I was married,” explains Jamie), but their

A sweet and simple proposal at their shared Beverlywood home kicked off equally low-key wedding planning. The couple were both tempted to head to City Hall and call it a day, but their families were keen on something more inclusive, so they decided on an intimate affair at L.A. dining destination A.O.C. Jamie, collection manager of the Marciano Art Collection, called her childhood friend and the owner of BK Events, Ashley Port, to help with the coordination. “Jamie comes from the art world, so she was very good at articulating her vision,” says Port. “I was there to help her bring it all together.” Jeremy, the director of admission for Paradigm Malibu, mostly deferred to Jamie during planning, but he did choose No. 33 to design his custom suit, a perfect complement to his bride’s Vera Wang gown.

As a stylist and one-half of the sister duo behind the fashion label Elkin, Kara Smith naturally noticed her future husband, Nick Walker’s outfit first. “We met at The Magic Castle. A mutual friend was hosting a party there,” she says of their initial encounter in 2008. “Nick didn’t know that guys have to wear suits [to The Magic Castle] so he had to borrow one from his friend’s dad—it was three sizes too big for him and he finished his look with a fuchsia beret.” The sartorial gamble paid off, and upon learning that Kara had never caught a fish, Nick, a photographer and director, orchestrated their first date at Troutdale, a small fishing pond near Malibu. Six years later, the couple returned to the spot, where Nick got down on bended knee with an Edwardian ring as Kara reeled in her catch. History also repeated itself when the couple wed in Santa Ynez, where Kara and Nick first declared their love. “There is a beautiful piece of land, surrounded by trees, that we walked by for years called Fox Run Farm,” says Kara of the ceremony location near her family’s vineyard, Rossi/Latt Ranch, the site of the reception. The duo popped a letter in the mailbox to the owners, and within a week, they replied, telling the bride and groom it would be an honor to watch them wed in their field. Kara’s dress was not as easy. With two days to go before the big day, the bride had selected her after-party ensemble (an off-shoulder, black taffeta Elkin look), but had yet to find the perfect wedding gown. Luckily, Houghton sourced her dream dress, a delicate tiered number to complement her Elkin-clad bridesmaids. Meanwhile, “groomslady” and stylist Samantha Traina oversaw Nick’s outfit, a Ralph Lauren tuxedo jacket and bow tie, paired with Saint Laurent trousers. After exchanging vows on a crisp fall day, the dapper newlyweds and more than 200 guests boarded vintage school buses and made their way to the vineyard. Cocktails and a family-style dinner ensued (complete with a Marie Antoinette-inspired dessert table), followed by dancing under twinkling lights. Hanni El Khatib serenaded the couple before Nick took to the stage for a surprise performance of “Simply Beautiful” by Al Green, dedicated to Kara. “It was pure magic,” she says. •

For Jamie Mizrahi (née Schneider), wardrobe stylist to the stars (Suki Waterhouse, Kate Upton and Katy Perry, to name a few), and her new husband, portfolio manager Nico Mizrahi, Cabo San Lucas was an easy honeymoon choice after tying the knot in the crisp air of Aspen in April. Her ultimate tip? “Don’t overplan. Enjoy relaxing,” says the Beverly Hills denizen. Here, Jamie divulges the details of their romantic getaway: STAY Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort ((rosewoodhotels.com). They really treated us like honeymooners—putting rose petals on our bed and drawing us a bubble bath every night. DINE The Tequila & Ceviche Bar at the hotel. We had most of our meals there. The fish is so fresh and you don’t even have to put on shoes. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES We took walks on the beach every morning and spent a lot of time in the water and at the pool bar. TRAVEL TIPS I religiously use Biologique Recherche L’Eauxygénante oxygenating mist when flying. I also use coconut oil on my body after showers. PACKING ESSENTIALS Oliver Peoples x The Row wayfarer-style sunglasses, La Roche-Posay sunscreen and Oscar de la Renta straw slides with tassels—pack light, your new husband will appreciate it! UPCOMING TRAVEL PLANS We are leaving for our friends’ wedding in Florence, Italy, in a few weeks. We are going early to Rome for honeymoon part two.

The Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice PART ONE: THE WEDDING “I was in awe the entire time, working with such beautiful clothing and costumes,” says L.A.-based director Gia Coppola, who teamed up with content studio 23 Stories and Gucci on a four-part digital series showcasing Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s Pre-Fall 2016 collection. In a modern-day spin on the classic Greek love story of Orpheus and Eurydice, Coppola’s narrative features styling by Arianne Phillips and a cast including Lou Doillon, Laura Love and Waris Ahluwahlia. Front and center are Michele’s latest creations, including a custom rose-colored veil—designed by Michele at Phillips’ behest—donned by Eurydice (played by Doillon) for her wedding to Marcel Castenmiller’s Orpheus. “When I saw what they were making, my mouth dropped,” says Coppola. “A pink veil makes me want to get married.” gucci.com.
