FOUNDER’S LETTER
Hollywood: a place that so many people know of, and many think they know. But behind the scenes, it is a whole different world than the one it’s widely perceived to be. The power players who make movies happen, the artists and the dreamers who bring projects to life, and the actors who transcend and become icons inhabit a world that is nothing short of heady and intoxicating. It’s no wonder people come west to follow their dreams… When I was 17, a year after moving to California from Michigan, I landed my perfect summer job, working for a production company based at the Paramount Pictures lot. To walk through the gates every morning, eat at the legendary commissary and stroll by the “New York” street scenes or studios full of amazing productions was a dream come true for this Midwestern teen. I saw all of the hard work that went into creating entertainment and also the business side of it— an education, for sure. I still love to see a movie every chance I get and escape into its fantasy, but I also know how many people have worked to make it a reality and appreciate the journey to get to the final shot. In this issue we chose to focus on stories that celebrate the glamour of Tinseltown. Jessica Chastain is one actor whose story reads like a movie script of its own. Having worked for years, she burst onto the scene in 2011 with a whopping seven films. Award nominations followed and designers couldn’t wait to dress her. She emerged as a star, in the old-fashioned sense of the word, and continues on that trajectory with her new thriller, Miss Sloane. If clothes make the man, costumes are pretty darn crucial in the scheme of films. The definition of elegance can be found in the costumes of The Great Gatsby starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Or what about the way Diane Keaton was dressed in Annie Hall? Perfection—and all the work of designer Ralph Lauren. With his celluloid success, he has also mastered dressing celebs for award shows and parties galore. We profile the designer on the eve of his L.A. flagship’s grand reopening and discover how he plays the part. A red-carpet moment comes with the territory in this industry, and there’s no other way to nail it than with the right outfit and jewels. Our fashion and jewelry portfolio is glam but modern at the same time…no shrinking violets need apply. After all, it is about making a statement, isn’t it? Which leads us seamlessly into our feature on Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal, who started an eBay store at the age of 22 and parlayed it into a major clothing and retail company. That she is now going global with a TV show proves Amoruso has no plans to slow down. We step into her stylish hideaway, designed by Pamela Shamshiri, featuring jaw-dropping views and a cool art collection to match. We also highlight Tom Ford and his new movie Nocturnal Animals and Francesco Carrozzini’s documentary, Franca: Chaos and Creation. And go to the best in the beauty industry for all of their tricks of the trade. These stories and so many more capture the magic that happens behind the scenes, behind the headlines and behind the deals…all before the credits roll.

C 44 NOVEMBER 2016
Chickens scratch in the dirt. Flowers and emerald rows of herbs shoot upward in the sun. You can catch the scent of smoked pork shoulder and baby back ribs, freshly made tortillas and vegetables sizzling on the grill. Hauser Wirth & Schimmel, the massive arts complex that opened in March in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, now has a garden—and a restaurant. Brilliant. That means you can sip Champagne or dig into some ribs while contemplating whether to buy that very expensive piece of art. Museums have had restaurants for a while now. But since when do galleries? Since now. Manuela Wirth, one half of the couple topping ArtReview’s 2015 Power 100 list of the world’s most influential figures in contemporary art, wanted a space where Angelenos could spend time and experience the art. She and her husband, Iwan, who own galleries in Zurich, London, New York and Somerset, England (where they also have a restaurant and farm), don’t tend to do anything on a small scale. Set in a vast former flour mill, Hauser Wirth & Schimmel includes a bookstore and research lab. And the restaurant Manuela (which opened in October), from M Winter Design, unfolds onto a courtyard that rivals a small town plaza. The space is is an art venue in its own right, complete with mirrored chandeliers composed of fluorescent tubes by Paul McCarthy, a Pacific Ocean-themed mural by Mary Heilmann and a mural by Raymond Pettibon depicting an Alpine landscape, part of the artist’s “Vavoom” series. The project is a collaboration between the gallerist and chef Wes Whitsell, a North Texas native who cooked in L.A. (Osteria La Buca and, briefly, Gjelina and Blair’s) before heading the kitchen at Soho House New York. That’s where he met the Wirths when their L.A. partner, former MOCA curator Paul Schimmel, brought the couple in to try Whitsell’s cooking. Says Wirth, “After tasting his incredible food we immediately proposed the collaboration.” “We have a shared vision,” says Whitsell, “for the grassroots, the grass-fed, the local and sustainable.” But he’s not just talking the talk. He’s spent the past eight months developing relations with farmers who work organically and raise animals ethically. If not, he Continued on p.138

“Someone had to tell the story of this crazy Italian woman who did something exceptional,” says Los Angeles-based photographer and director Francesco Carrozzini on the subject of his first documentary, Franca: Chaos and Creation. The “crazy Italian” in question is Franca Sozzani, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia since 1988, one of the most powerful figures in fashion and, as it happens, the director’s mother. “It’s like someone paid for therapy for a few years of my life!” he jokes. Even though the film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is currently making its way through the festival circuit, delves into Sozzani’s extraordinary career— from creating the supermodel phenomenon of the ’90s (Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, et al.) along with her friends Gianni Versace and Steven Meisel to the controversial BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill-inspired photo shoot two years later that made headlines—it aims deeper. “For me [the documentary is] about two people and their love,” says the Emmy-nominated director, whose credits include music videos for Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey and A$AP Rocky, and who regularly shoots for L’Uomo Vogue, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. “Maybe I alienated some [who] just wanted another fashion film, but I gained the biggest audience—everyone who understands the relationship between mother and son.” The stellar roll call of appearances by Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace does not disappoint, but it’s the intimate scenes between Carrozzini and Sozzani bickering in the back of a car or laughing about him as “an ugly baby” that resonate. “When my father died I started to understand that I missed out on some things, and it took almost five years of making this film to feel comfortable with the story it was telling,” he explains. “I didn’t know anything about her early life. When I stumbled upon these 8 mm films at my grandma’s house, that’s when I understood. We all think of our parents as these perfect human beings and the truth is they are people who have stories and love and hate and make mistakes. That was the real discovery; my mother is not perfect, but she has the strength and determination and imagination of very few.” • KIKI GEORGIOU

HEIDI MERRICK’s flagship delivers her seaside sensibilities to DOWNTOWN L.A. You can take Heidi Merrick away from the beach, but you can’t take the ocean’s allure out of her namesake line: After 10 years designing her eponymous ready-towear collection from her Downtown Los Angeles studio, the California native is opening a flagship boutique, H. Merrick of California, this month in an 1,800-squarefoot space downstairs—and she’s bringing her coastal influences with her. “My line has always been California lifestyle-oriented. You can dress elegantly here during the day and be easy at night,” says Merrick, who’s known for long, breezy silhouettes fashioned from cotton gauze, silk chiffon and silk charmeuse. The aesthetic draws in part from her oceanside childhood in Carpinteria, where her parents, Terry and Al Merrick, founded Channel Islands Surfboards.

Aesop and A.P.C.—Merrick will follow suit, bringing production into her studio. “Downtown feels alive with people who are seeking out innovation and creativity,” says the designer, who will offer in-store by-appointment atelier hours for fittings and custom designs (including bridal). The ready-to-wear line shares the minimalist space with exclusive artwork produced in partnership with local artists, including large-scale images of the Pacific coastline—directed by Merrick and shot by L.A. photographer Sharon Montrose. “It feels like you’re at the beach, as if there’s an ocean view,” she says. In a further nod to her surfing lineage, the store features a series of bespoke boards, a collaboration with her brother, Britt, the head designer and shaper for Channel Islands Surfboards. These precision-crafted, oneof-a-kind boards are equal parts highperformance models and works of art. “I want the store to express a made-inCalifornia feel,” says Merrick. “I want my collection to hang amongst things I think are beautiful. It’s that simple.” 115 W. Ninth St., L.A.; heidimerrick.com. • ALLIA ALLIATA

Irvine-based St. John gets into the athleisure game this month with the launch of St. John Sport. The relaxed line of weekend wear stays true to the brand’s luxe roots with sumptuous fabrics such as cashmere and silk; casual pieces remain polished with sophisticated silhouettes in a clean palette of black, white, red and blue. A pointelle-knit dress, striped with sheer moments at the leg and shoulders, is equally at home at the beach club and cocktail parties, while a red funnel-neck coat and joggers in allover cashmere elevate the school drop-off to a moment of stylish grace. stjohnknits.com.

Not only is it more than twice as large as the previous locale, but the new Shreve & Co. also raises the bar with a sophisticated interior designed by renowned Lochte Architectural Group, featuring a trio of striking chandeliers—a cascade of lights and crystals suspended from the 30-foot ceiling. Private selling suites provide the ultimate discretion during consultations, while a dedicated diamond room is where engagement dreams are made. There’s also an entertainment room that’s more lounge than jewelry store, providing the perfect respite—fashioned as a relaxed, masculine space, it includes
a premium bar, flat-screen TV, and a curated selection of the brand’s jewelry and timepieces. In addition to the engraving and estate jewelry appraisal services they’ve always offered, a dedicated watchmaker and custom jeweler are now available in-house, too. Of course, Shreve’s own collections will be on hand, including exclusive pieces such as internally flawless diamonds, high-complication watches, rare pearls and signed estate jewelry, to name a few—plus collections from Rolex, Patek Philippe, Mikimoto and more. 150 Post St., S.F., 415-4212600; shreve.com.

When Shreve & Co. was unable to renew its lease last year in its namesake building on Post Street, where it had been since moving in a month before the 1906 earthquake, it marked the end of an era for the storied Bay Area jeweler. MANE SQUEEZE
Cheeky and lighthearted Scotty Cunha is always the life of the party. Add to that his styling expertise and huge social media presence, and it’s easy to see why he is irresistible to celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Emma Roberts and Lucy Hale. When he’s not on location or jet-setting around the world, find Cunha at the Andy Lecompte Salon in West Hollywood, creating the tousled tresses that are his signature. The truth about maintaining Hollywood hair? Hair that’s styled almost daily for events, parties or filming is a lot harder to maintain. The more styling and heat, the drier the hair. Coloring too frequently can also cause damage. So I love conditioning treatments!
Use coconut oil on the last day of a blowout, or use leave-in conditioners that are light and not greasy, like Kiehl’s Hair Conditioner and Grooming Aid Formula 133 or Paul Mitchell Detangler for kids. Insta-ready in a flash? When in doubt, topknot it! It elevates a look and is so chic and easy to do. Favorite trend? I will always love the undone look. A super chic or fancy dress should be offset by undone, effortless chic hair. @thescottycunha. 1. OUAI Matte Pomade, $24, sephora.com. “Adds texture to loose waves and helps with flyaways.” 2. “As I was going through the process of building it out, I came up with the idea of thematics,” says Alison Palevsky of developing her eponymous lifestyle boutique and art gallery concept, Palevsky. Home to a selection of artwork, furniture, accessories and themed shows, the Brentwood locale is a testament to Palevsky’s promise: “You’re not going to see the same thing elsewhere.” Seasonal revamping is built into the store’s DNA. For the “Holy Wood—A Shrine to Los Angeles” fall show, pieces from the likes of Ellen von Unwerth, Norman Seeff and David Drebin explore fame, image and celebrity. And because the new season is also about “highlighting the modern-day talents of emerging and established L.A.-based and -inspired artists,” the space will feature design studio Harvey Lynch’s window installation and a one-ofa-kind chandelier by Downtown glass artist Uri Davillier of Neptune Glass. The same artistic sensibility is translated into the store’s newly launched The Jewel Box, a fine jewelry collection curated by Rachael White in which “every piece is a conversation starter.” Whether it’s working with fine artists and local furniture builders, selecting home accessories or collaborating with private clients, a through-line explains Palevsky’s philosophy and “Holy Wood.” “I love unusual things with an element of craftsmanship,” she says. 11740 San Vicente Blvd., #115, L.A., 310-8260066; palevsky.co. • JESSICA RITZ

Judson Studios (judsonstudios.com) has been the West Coast leader in stained glass ever since William Lees Judson started making windows in the mid-1890s. (The Highland Park firm fabricated panels for Frank Lloyd Wright’s seminal L.A. projects.) As they undertake what will be the world’s largest stained-glass window, created by Tim Carey in collaboration with Narcissus Quagliata for the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kan., other L.A. designers and makers are exploring the decorative art on a smaller scale. “From the moment I scored my first piece of glass, I knew I wanted to pursue it full time,” says Debbie Bean (debbiebean.com), whose pieces insert the craft into everyday life. And interior designer Wendy Haworth (wendy haworthdesign.com) recently turned her attention to the medium, customizing pieces for clients. “It’s meditative for me,” she says.

Carving a Niche For 27-year-old fine-arts grad Julian Watts, it wasn’t until he entered “the real world” that he found his true passion: woodcarving. A post for a furniture maker in his native S.F. drove him to learn the craft for himself. “I got interested in taking these functional objects and trying to inject them with a sculptural, surreal, experimental form,” says Watts, whose studio is now in Oakland. “I like that weird tension there.” This fall, his small hand-carved walnut and maple objects were incorporated into the Dutch creative group Steinbeisser’s Experimental Gastronomy dinner, and have been featured at Heath Ceramics’ L.A. showroom. julianwattsstudio.com.

MACARONS line the table to fete Ladurée’s West Coast debut.
French Toast LADURÉE’s Elisabeth Holder-Raberin and PierreAntoine Raberin land in CALIFORNIA, bringing THEIR ICONIC MACARONS with them NOVEMBER 2016 C 85
MENU
The breeze is warm under the large California oak trees and the table is set with café au lait dahlias and bottles of rosé. Conversation is half French, half English, as lunch plates are cleared to make way for towers of macarons—the classic Ladurée macarons that fans line up for every day in cities around the world like Paris, New York and Miami. Having fallen in love with Los Angeles, Elisabeth Holder-Raberin and Pierre-Antoine Raberin of Ladurée U.S. are soaking up the sun and toasting to their West Coast debut with friends in Montecito. By the end of the year, the company will open two Southern California stores: one in Beverly Hills and another at The Grove in L.A. While the 150-year-old brand has a strong global presence, it’s only been in the states a few years. The first two West Coast locations, set to open mid-December, will be chef-driven restaurants serving much more than pastries (think avocado toast and tofu burgers); Beverly Hills will boast an all-white ’70s vibe, while The Grove’s interior will take on a more classic, traditional French look. Each location will offer a full menu of natural foods, late hours and plenty of seating (with ample outdoor space at The Grove), while also retaining its quick pastry counter for those simply after the beautiful, famed delicacies. “They’re the

supermodel of pastry,” Elisabeth says. Elisabeth and Pierre-Antoine met while working at Hermès, and she often compares the two iconic French brands for their “know-how craftsmanship.” Since the couple and their twin boys, Joseph and Nathaniel, are spending more time in Los Angeles, they’ve found themselves taken with beach days, weekly farmers-market trips, and motorcycling on country roads. While they still have calls on New York and Parisian time, they’ve quickly found a California way of life and are happy to be bringing their signature treats (which happen to be gluten-free) to the Golden State. Los Angeles has motivated the couple to add seasonal macarons to the lineup, including passion fruit. They indulge in a little treat every day, and Elisabeth, in pure French fashion, advises, “Sugar is not poison,” but kids should eat good sugar and good ingredients. And forget the all-American open-fridge policy: PierreAntoine says absolutely no snacking for the boys—it’s not the French way. “But,” he says, lifting his glass in the sunshine, “we drink all day.” 189 The Grove Dr., L.A.; 311 N. TEX Appeal “We met at a Valentine’s Day party, and Jesse was the one hoarding the ‘good Champagne,’ so our very first conversation was around our shared love of great food and drink,” says Hayley Feldman. “We ideated countless hours over how we could strike out on our own and run a small cafe.” Fast-forward six years and Hayley, along with her now-husband, Jesse Feldman, traded their respective careers in marketing and investment banking in New York to realize their dream with Chez Tex, a cozy, 36-seat bistro in Venice. Tapping into their shared backgrounds in hospitality (both spent their formative years working in bars and restaurants; Jesse’s family also owns Barndiva in Sonoma County), the couple spent three years bringing the concept to life, landing on the raw space that once housed Obsolete Gallery. “We live around the corner and always joke that Main Street really should be what Abbot Kinney is—it has a better location flanking the beach, a great retail presence
and a lot of foot traffic, yet the food and drink options are lackluster compared to its cousin to the south,” says Jesse, whose oenophile father, David Feldman, also resides locally, and consulted on the “unpretentious” Old World-leaning wine list. Chef Ashkan “Ash” Ghassemzadeh, who fine-tuned his craft most recently at Walter Manzke’s République as sous-chef, turns out simple, well-executed fare on a rotating lunch and dinner menu that Jesse refers to as “Paris meets Venice Beach”: Think wild mushrooms with olive oil and egg yolk, and Devil’s Gulch Ranch rabbit terrine served with fermented vegetables. Says Hayley, “It’s like getting to throw a fabulous dinner party every single night.” 218 Main St., Venice, 310-314-1314; cheztex.com.

Director-writer TOM FORD with cinematographer SEAMUS McGARVEY on set of their film NOCTURNAL ANIMALS.
In Focus TOM FORD returns to the DIRECTOR’S CHAIR for NOCTURNAL ANIMALS, a film whose looks may deceive NOVEMBER 2016 C 99
A still from Nocturnal Animals of Susan Morrow (Amy Adams). Below: Jake Gyllenhaal who takes on dual roles in the film.
Closure. That universal yearning is unwrapped, unpacked, combed through and rewound in Tom Ford’s stark November film Nocturnal Animals. The multitalented writer-director (and designer and visual artist) interprets the idiosyncratic novel Tony and Susan (itself an unusual tale: published in the
’90s, then rereleased in the U.K. to great acclaim and now being revived for the U.S.) with a sharp cast including Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney and Aaron TaylorJohnson. Stylish (but of course) and drenched in sepia hues, the film’s visuals are also designed to provide substance. “I think a movie should play silently and that words and language should be used only when necessary to move the narrative along,” Ford says. The story follows Susan Morrow (Adams), whose dull but privileged life in Los Angeles with her frequently traveling second husband (Hammer) turns upside down after her ex-husband (Gyllenhaal) sends her a manuscript of his haunting novel, dedicated to her. As Adams reads through the violent thriller about a mild-mannered husband whose family trip in West Texas takes a dark turn, she’s forced to reflect on her past. Deftly, Ford plays with the way a work of art can toy with a reader, and the journey is as internal as it is external. Viewers, too, will be in its clutches. •

ART in the Fields With four concurrent inaugural exhibitions, including “Out Our Way,” a show of notable work by the famous “First Generation” of artist-teachers at UC Davis in the 1960s, the brand-new Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art (named for Jan Shrem, the founder of Napa’s Clos Pegase winery, and his wife, arts patron Maria Manetti Shrem) should be as influential and eclectic as the school’s original 12 professors—a group including Wayne Theibaud, Roland Peterson and Ruth Horsting (all on view). Brooklyn architectural firm SO-IL and the ecofriendly Bohlin Cywinski Jackson group bring together indoor and outdoor space with multipurpose galleries, mesh ceilings studded with LED lights and outdoor rooms furnished with olive trees—a worthy and naturalistic setting for the institution’s illustrious holdings, spanning the ’60s to today. The expansive backyard of Amoruso’s 3,000-square-foot MIDCENTURY house.
Feature (tbd)
The tattooed word inadequate peeks out from beneath the flared silk sleeve of Sophia Amoruso’s Nicholas dress—a harsh judgment softened by its curvilinear script, scrawled down her forearm. It’s not the first adjective one expects to find north of Amoruso’s wrist, especially when encountered against the backdrop of her stunning steel-framed midcentury Los Angeles home, built on the success of her fashion empire Nasty Gal. Add to her list of accomplishments the 2014 New York Times bestselling memoir/ professional manifesto #Girlboss (and spinoff podcast by the same name) and October’s Nasty Galaxy (G.P. Putnam’s Sons), a new stream-of-consciousness-styled coffee table book comprising Amoruso’s musings (on falling in love, on having it all), how-tos (writing thank-yous, making deviled eggs), and interviews with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Leandra Medine. Not to mention a 2017 Netflix show based on Amoruso’s memoir, starring Tomorrowland’s Britt Robertson and created by Kay Cannon (New Girl, 30 Rock), who is also executive producing with Charlize Theron and Amoruso herself. Inadequate doesn’t exactly spring to mind. She pushes her sleeve higher to reveal the word is part of a quote referencing a piece by artist Jenny Holzer: “Words tend to be inadequate.” “I think it means that action is what we’re judged by,” she says. Amoruso, 32, knows about action. Her story is something of a tech-world fairy tale: 22-year-old girl launches expertly curated vintage shop on eBay, abdicates to start her own brand, and turns it into a runaway international retail success. (Forbes estimates that last year its revenues surpassed $300 million.) “I was CEO by default, and stepped out of that role about a year and a half ago,” she says. “A wonderful woman, Sheree Waterson, is now CEO—I’m executive chairman of the board and involved in collabs and marketing and creative, but I’m not day-to-day managing a team, which was not my strength.” In 2012, when she bought her 3,000square-foot house, formerly occupied by Sofia Coppola, interest in her business had reached a fever pitch: “It was the year Nasty Gal raised $50 million and got investors for the first time,” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh, my god, I’m an adult: I can afford a home— that’s so cool’…It’s been only four years but

a lot has happened,” she reflects. “I ended up getting married and divorced since then…I’ve grown up a lot, but I’m still the same person. I’ve seen more, and maybe will stand for less.” She tapped architect Barbara Bestor for the renovation, and Commune Design for the interiors, working with one of the firm’s founding partners, Pamela Shamshiri, who earlier this year, left to start her own firm, Studio Shamshiri, with her brother Ramin, another former Commune partner. “She put together this incredible Pinterest board; it was her world, which is what you want from a client,” says Shamshiri of Amoruso’s references, which included the West Hollywood Isabel Marant store, retro British fashion brand Biba and Kelly Klein’s Palm Beach house spread in the August 2012 issue of Architectural Digest. “Interior design at its best should be like portraiture, and reflect the people living in it.” The two created a space governed by pastel tones and a ’60s sensibility, with a panoramic view visible throughout, thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass doors. “When you’re fearlessly open to other people’s input, they can bring you to a new place,” says Shamshiri of the collab-

oration. “And that’s interesting.” Naturally, Amoruso’s closet—formerly an extra bedroom—was a priority: Even the custom white oak ladder, designed to reach sleek built-in storage areas, underwent 11 iterations. The rare 1930s Pietro Chiesa vanity for FontanaArte is the pièce de résistance, with the price tag to go with such a title: “I’m one of those people who can justify a purchase,” Amoruso admits. “It was like (she adopts a whisper to convey the gravitas of what will follow): This is where I prepare for my day. I tell myself it’s a spiritual choice, and Pam nods.” The team at Netflix remade some of the vintage items in Amoruso’s closet for the show, which is set in San Francisco in the time before Amoruso launched Nasty Gal. “I get to relive the last 10 years of my life and laugh at it,” she says. It begs the question: Any tears? “None of the stuff that happened in my 20s was all that serious,” she says. “Those things are more adult—the things that happen in your 30s. Those things are coming.” Around the corner, her bedroom is a sultry tableau in crimson, brown and purpleblue, a palette taken from a pair of vintage suede patchwork shorts. A mirrored wall behind the bed reflects the view, though the custom velvet-upholstered bed is itself a sight to behold—it even lights up. “It’s a little Austin Powers,” says Amoruso, approvingly. A hallway containing Pierre Paulin’s fanciful undulating ABCD Sofa leads to the living room, where an Alma Allen coffee table cast from a rock taken from the artist’s Joshua Tree studio (Shamshiri owns the only other one) is the hub on which all things turn; an Icelandic sheepskinupholstered 1940s Swedish chair awaits cozy-by-the-fireplace moments (last New Year’s Eve Amoruso and her friends wrote down their bad habits on pieces of paper and burned them here). “It’s like the Garden of Eden; once you’ve been exposed to a taste level you’re forever cursed in the best, most beautiful way,” says Amoruso of Shamshiri’s educational effect on her decorative sense. “So many people who have the means to hire an interior designer just want to move into a beautiful hotel, and that was the last thing that I wanted,” she adds. “A lot of people just want to borrow style—they don’t want to participate. And I really like participating.” •

“I think the reason I can be so busy is because of my [clean] diet,” declares Jessica Chastain. The committed vegan and California native is calling from New Mexico, where she is currently filming the Susanna White-directed period drama Woman Walks Ahead. It’s just past sunrise on a Sunday morning and after shooting until 3 a.m. the night before, Chastain is running on little sleep and no coffee (“I only drink it when I’m in Italy,” she says). It’s a 45-minute drive to set, where there’s no Internet or cell service. “Once you leave in the morning, you’re completely cut off from society, which is beautiful, I think, when making this film,” she says of the feature, set in the late 1800s and based on a true story. Chastain portrays Caroline Weldon, a widow from Brooklyn who travels to the Dakota Territory to paint the famous Sioux leader, Sitting Bull. What transpires is an unlikely connection between the two, with Weldon eventually becoming a trusted confidante to the Native American chief. “Women in American society didn’t really have a voice then, and the Sioux tribe did not have a voice in a country that was being run by white men,” she explains. “This friendship came about from two people who were struggling to be heard in this world. I found that so inspiring.” It’s the latest in a string of impactful leading-lady roles for Chastain, who is set to star opposite Mark Strong and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in December’s political thriller Miss Sloane as a success-driven strategist who takes on Capitol Hill over the divisive gun-control debate, and pulls back the curtain on the D.C. power game and its players. Chastain first worked with director John Madden in the 2010 espionage film The Debt, and felt immediately compelled by the chance to work with him again. After reading the script, she was equally drawn in by her character and her win-atall-costs approach. “She’s got shades of gray in there, which is what I love. She’s very flawed,” says Chastain, who immersed herself in the world of Washington lobbyists to prepare for the role. Chastain is known for the intense preparation she puts into all her characters, from her Oscar-nominated portrayal of a CIA agent in 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, to an astrophysicist in Interstellar (2014). “My experience with making movies is that I want to walk away from each role, and each set,
“I want to walk away from EACH ROLE, and each set, having LEARNED something and GROWN as a PERSON.”
having learned something and grown as a person. That’s really important for me when choosing a role: What am I going to learn and what am I going to gain from this experience?” Her breakout year came in 2011, when she starred in seven films, including The Tree of Life, Texas Killing Fields and The Help—a role that also earned her an Academy Award nod. “I never imagined my career would be like this,” she says. “I mean, I dreamed of going and working at the Oregon Repertory Theatre. In fact, I still have the keychain a friend gave me in high school.” Raised in Northern California by a vegan chef mother and firefighter father, Chastain’s interest in acting was sparked at an early age, when her grandmother took her to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In 1999, she made her way to New York to pursue her longtime dream of acting professionally at the Juilliard School, aided by a scholarship underwritten by alumnus Robin Williams. “It wasn’t about fame or money, or anything like that. It was my passion,” says Chastain, who arrived at the prestigious NYC performing arts school to discover that the acting programs accepted a far higher ratio of men to women. Chastain raised her concern with the head of the drama department, only to be told that it was because there were more parts designated for men than women in plays. “It was so old-fashioned,” says Chastain, who admits that it was a bold move on her part as a student. “Nothing is going to change if you continue the status quo.” To that end, she recently launched Freckle Films, a production company dedicated to fighting gender and race inequality with films that have “many points of view.” Chastain also prides herself on working with a number of distinguished female directors throughout her career, from Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), to Ami Canaan Mann (Texas Killing Fields), Liv Ullmann (Miss Julie, 2014) and Niki Caro in the upcoming The Zookeeper’s Wife, due out in 2017. She describes herself as a “girl’s girl” and nowhere is that more evident than her love of fashion. A regular on best-dressed lists, Chastain—often with the help of power stylist Elizabeth Stewart—seeks out pieces by designers with whom she has a personal connection, including her friend, Givenchy Creative Director Riccardo Tisci—“a won-
derful human being.” Miuccia Prada makes the list, too. “I just had a meeting with her in Milan a couple of months ago. She knows so much about film and art,” says Chastain. The actor sat front-row at the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris this summer. She is also intertwined in the sartorial world via boyfriend Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, an Italian-born fashion executive at Moncler and winemaker of Fiol prosecco, to whom she has been linked since 2012. Since then, they’ve made concerted efforts to stay out of the public eye. “In this industry you can set your own privacy. If I go to certain restaurants with my boyfriend I know we’re going to get photographed,” says Chastain, who is based in New York but still calls California home. “But when the public is involved in your relationship…they can demand or ask questions because they feel like they have an ownership of it, because you sold it,” she says. “That means they have a say in your private life.” Earlier this year, the industrious Chastain did the unthinkable and took a five-month break in between acting jobs. That’s not to say she wasn’t working; she opened Cannes Film Festival in May before vacationing in Greece and Italy later in the summer. An avid yoga practitioner, she spent time working out with NYC trainer Anna Kaiser, whose client list runs the gamut from Shakira to Sarah Jessica Parker, and relaxed with Chaplin, her three-legged pooch. “When I saw him I said, ‘That’s my dog, right there. I believe in that guy,’” Chastain recalls of her fateful trip to the shelter, admitting that the choice was onbrand; she is an admitted sucker for the underdog. “When I watch sports—which is a rare thing—I always support the team that no one believes in.” The fact that the actor is emotionally invested in a challenge is hardly surprising. Of course, ask any oddsmaker; backing team Chastain is as close to a sure thing as they come. •

A choreographed staff and SEAMLESS series of boutiques lend RALPH LAUREN’s newly renovated RODEO DRIVE flagship the big-screen CHARM of his most brilliant creations

Mere weeks after shifting his company to a seenow-shop-now philosophy, RALPH LAUREN reopened his renovated BEVERLY HILLS flagship. Opposite: A twisting wrought-iron staircase brings to mind Gloria Swanson’s grand residence in Sunset Boulevard.

He put Diane Keaton in ties and Robert Redford in dapper double-breasted suits. In the process, Ralph Lauren helped both actors conjure up two of the most memorable characters in American cinema: Annie Hall and Jay Gatsby. Lauren even made the oxford shirt (sans pants) Tom Cruise wore in Risky Business. Indeed, the fashion designer has credited his film work and the glamorous world of Hollywood with feeding his creative vision. So it’s no surprise that Lauren’s newly reopened 22,000-square-foot Beverly Hills flagship evokes his deep California roots and his extensive cinematic oeuvre. Indeed, Lauren has said he dreams up a heroine for each collection whom he anoints as the star of the movie playing out in his mind, and she expresses Lauren’s story for each particular season. If Lauren’s clothes are his screenplays, then the new shop is a dramatic setting for each production. The Rodeo Drive boutique is itself Gatsbyesque. Inside, roving waiters with trays and discrete drink menus hover, and it seems as if a cocktail party might begin at any moment. Bar snacks and refreshments including The Polo Bar’s famed oldfashioned are on offer and complimentary. The flagship, housing Lauren’s collections for men, women and home, spans two floors, and nearly every room includes an antique fireplace and pieces from the designer’s home, lighting and furniture lines. It has what F. Scott Fitzgerald called a “hint of bedrooms upstairs, more beautiful and cool than other bedrooms,” and exploring the shop in its entirety becomes a quest. It’s no co-

incidence that Lauren’s foray into film, starting with the 1974 film adaption of The Great Gatsby, came on the tails of his initial retail presence on Rodeo Drive. He was the first American designer to open up a stand-alone store there in 1971, across the street from his current space. Over the years, the city’s interior designers have come to rely on Lauren’s furniture and accessories. West Hollywood-based Mary McDonald says
she pores over the pieces in his collections that are influenced by Southwestern tribal motifs. For her, they add a “visual richness” to casual beach or desert decor. “From the Native American-inspired textiles to many of the natural fiber materials used for an array of seating, no one completes this particular Western schematic as chicly as Ralph Lauren,” McDonald says. Such pieces are found upstairs at the boutique amid gifts, tabletop items,
linens, a curated selection of books and vintage barware, and throughout the comprehensive design center that includes endless swatches of fabrics and materials. Painted and stained millwork fixtures hang in abundance, some of which take inspiration from the local flora and fauna in the hills surrounding Los Angeles. And then there are the clothes. On offer are all the looks from the September Collection 2016—first shown on the runway September 14 and available instore immediately afterward—part of Lauren’s innovative new see-now-shopnow initiative. The movable feast inside the flagship continues in the handbag salon where artisan-made Ricky, Tiffin and Drawstring bags can be customized through a high-tech process that most closely resembles a Monaco blackjack table. (Going all in is tempting.) But top Hollywood stylists, including Tara Swennen and Petra Flannery, often head straight to an intimate boudoir, set deep inside the flagship for the column gowns Lauren dreams up each season that are worn by such stars as Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwyneth Paltrow. “You know what you’ll get,” says Swennen, who works with Kristen Stewart, “and it’ll be chic and elegant.” Swennen is partial to the designer’s tuxedos and jumpsuits and says, “I love a good ruffle, he does that well too, and his leathers, suedes and silks are all elevated classics.” On the men’s side is a closet of

bespoke fabrics for custom suits favored by Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne, actors who have followed Redford’s lead wearing Ralph Lauren. Though, in truth, many would do well to select off-the-rack designs, spurred by the knowledge that the clothes used in Gatsby all came from that season’s Polo line, except for one pink suit that Lauren designed especially for Redford. • Clockwise from top right: The BEVERLY HILLS flagship’s ode to women’s shoes. As the megastylist behind Justin Bieber’s sharp Saint Laurent looks and Karlie Kloss’ latest take on power dressing, Karla Welch is constantly on the hunt for both new and vintage designer threads. “To get my hands on pieces by amazing artists is something I’ll never take for granted,” says Welch, who calls Laurel Canyon home (“I love that it’s out of the city within the city,” she says). When it comes to scoring the best finds, she looks no further than her own backyard: West Hollywood. Here, her favorite local haunts. Lily’s Coffee at the Canyon Country Store It is the hub of our community. I like that I know all my neighbors. • Maxfield I love their buy. It’s always fashion forward and visually the store is so inspiring. maxfieldla.com. • Vanessa Seward Her new store is elegant; cool French girl vibes. vanessaseward.com. • Sielian’s Vintage Apparel I just bought a vintage Valentino coatdress. It’s perfect. sieliansvintageapparel.com. • Isabel Marant I love sitting in the garden and the wild overgrowth—the landscape designer, Judy Kameon, is incredible. isabelmarant.com. • Jinpachi It’s the best sushi in Los Angeles. 310-358-9134. CORINNE FOXX Growing up, Corinne Foxx would giddily accompany her father, Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx, on the red carpet. “We would get so starstruck and try to get pictures with everyone,” says the 22-yearold Los Angeles native. But when her own moment in the spotlight arrived—as Miss Golden Globe 2016— she played it decidedly cool. “My friends couldn’t believe it,” says Foxx, who was then a senior at USC. “I’d kept it a secret for so long.” With illustrious alumnae such as Laura Dern and Dakota Johnson, the Miss Golden Globe title is considered a launchpad to stardom. And already, Foxx is well on her way. After graduating from college last spring, she’s devoted herself to acting full time. “There are a few projects in the works I’m excited for people to see,” she says, demurring over specifics. She’s also found success as a model (she recently walked Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 4 runway show and is a face of the new Wet n Wild cosmetics campaign), and does advocacy work in her spare time (a bullying prevention spokesperson, she also harbors dreams of speaking before the U.N. on the importance of education for all women). A full plate, perhaps, but hardly surprising given her role model. “My dad wakes up every day and is so energized for what he does,” says Foxx. “He inspired me to never settle for a job that doesn’t fuel my soul.” •
