FOUNDER’S LETTER

Any friendship that starts in the gardens of Versailles, surrounded by couture-clad cognoscenti and vats of paella in honor of Dior’s 60th anniversary, is destined for greatness. Such was the beginning of my friendship with the fashion world’s most beloved living illustrator. David Downton has been sketching the most beautiful women and fashions for nearly a quarter of a century. I had been familiar with his work for years, ripping his illustrations out of magazines and putting them on my mood board long before I ever met him. That we bumped into each other and were introduced in such illustrious surroundings was nothing less than serendipity. Thanks to that fateful moment more than nine years ago, Downton became a contributor to C. When I heard he was coming west this month to take special commissions and present his works at Mary Ta’s Minotti Los Angeles and Mass Beverly showrooms, I jumped at the chance to show his process in our pages. As this is an issue devoted to beauty, the portfolio (“Lasting Impressions,” p.120) highlights some of today’s brightest with Downton’s strokes of genius on full display. Showcasing another friend—one who, as it happens, was first propelled to fame by his Friends-era “Rachel” cut on Jennifer Aniston—we turn to the adorable Chris McMillan. Over the years I have been lucky enough to work with him on many a shoot, where his infectious smile always lights up a set. At the end of the day, he retires to a home filled with an eclectic contemporary art collection, including exciting works by L.A. talents (“A Cut Above,” p.102). Like its curator, the space shines in the city’s light. Speaking of sparkle, in this issue we also shift our gaze to beautiful baubles. FrenchAlgerian multihyphenate Sofia Boutella, star of the upcoming summer flick The Mummy, stuns in a balance of soft looks and delicate jewelry (“Romancing the Stone,” p.110). Meanwhile, L.A.-based jeweler Sarah Hendler is proving talent attracts talent: she is married to Vinny Dotolo, half of the culinary darling duo responsible for Jon & Vinny’s, Animal and Son of a Gun. We go inside their home for an intimate lunch surrounded by their nearest and dearest (“Easy Does It,” p.126). With his artistry in food and hers in jewels, it is a beautiful marriage of myriad realms. Finally, on to our lovely cover subject, Kelly Rohrbach. A model who is successfully navigating the acting world, Rohrbach gamely helped us pay sartorial homage to Helmut Newton’s strong heroines in this issue’s dynamic shoot (“Suiting Up,” p.90), captured by Zoey Grossman. Rohrbach radiates power and strength while still staying true to her feminine form—the ultimate in modern beauty, in an issue devoted to it.

The New Classic As the founder of luxe ready-to-wear label Hensely, Neha Kapur Nayyar designs for a woman who sounds a lot like the glamorous New Delhi-born talent herself: “She’s curious about life,” says Kapur Nayyar, who arrived in L.A. after studying fashion design, modeling for Elite, representing India in the Miss Universe pageant and marrying actor Kunal Nayyar in 2011. “She has an easy, elegant, laidback style.” The brand’s spring collection channels Studio 54, Bianca Jagger and the desert’s muted colorscape in floorskimming gowns, a minidress with flared sleeves and three-piece suits anchored by wide-leg pants. Following the introduction of sleek brass pins and cuff links, Kapur Nayyar is next plotting art deco-style jewelry; her adopted hometown is proving to be its own creative catalyst: “There’s something about [L.A.]—just the energy,” she says. “It’s a good time to be here.” modaoperandi.com; hensely.com. • KHANH T.L. Color Vision Eschewing S.F.’s prevailing wood-and-leather-rich aesthetic for bars and restaurants, Anina—a new watering hole from the team behind the popular Hayes Valley spot Brass Tacks and designed by SVZ Interior Design—is styled with patterned pops of color and large-scale botanical illustrations by Buenos Aires-based muralist Lucila Domínguez. Custom Moroccan-made back bar tiles are a nod to midcentury architect Oscar Niemeyer; drinks such as Piña Spritz, with pineapple rum, banana liqueur, lemon and prosecco, are perfect for leisurely patio sipping, while three citrus-driven punch bowls have you and your friends covered. 482 Hayes St., S.F.; aninasf.com. Fleeting Pleasures For any child who has ever groaned at the prospect of visiting a museum, Maryellis Bunn has a seriously compelling counteroffer: The Museum of Ice Cream, Bunn’s passion project, arrives in DTLA this spring after a sold-out run in Manhattan— and this iteration is four times larger than the original. “I took away from New York this idea of how do I curate ice cream in the way someone would curate art?” explains the MOIC founder and Laguna Beach native. The temporary exhibit includes a swimmable sprinkle pool (comprising 100 million customdesigned faux sprinkles), gummy bear lights and, of course, lots of the cold sweet stuff from the likes of McConnell’s and Salt & Straw. 2018 E. 7th Pl., L.A.; museumoficecream.com. Cosmic Connection “Each piece is a reminder of the energy flowing through you,” says Danielle Birrittella of her Venice-designed jewelry line, Poe. A classically trained opera singer who spent her early childhood in a Hindu ashram, Birrittella designed her new collection as a nod to her parents (Poe is her mother’s surname; her father is a trained astrologer who taught her about the stars as a child). The result is a brilliant array of geometric diamonds set in 18-karat yellow and rose gold prayer rings, bracelets, necklaces and stud earrings, incorporating the philosophies of the seven chakras and sacred geometry. poejewelry.com.

SUNNY Side Up Santa Monica native Raphael Lunetta knows how people in his hometown like to eat. For Lunetta All Day, the classically trained Westside chef, who ran the beloved JiRaffe restaurant for 18 years, has teamed with restaurateurs Daniel Weinstock and Mike Garrett of Divide + Conquer Inc. (founders of the Culver City BBQ favorite Maple Block Meat Co.) to serve “rustic, coastal California cuisine with the sensibility of the restaurants that I love,” Lunetta says. The forthcoming formal component, Lunetta Dining Room and Back Bar, will round out the neighborhood-oriented eatery. In the meantime, breakfast dishes such as lemon ricotta buttermilk pancakes start the day off right. WHAT’S HOT Tastemaker

“Everything looked glossy, shiny, sparkly and wonderful,” jewelry designer SarahJane Wilde says of the celluloid vision that first lured her to L.A. It’s that hyper-real beauty, juxtaposed with gothic undertones, that weaves its way through all of Wilde’s 1970s-inspired work, including frequent collaborations with her best friend, fashion designer Thom Browne, and collections for Maxfield. Her latest concept, dubbed Remember You Must Die,, began as a commission for the late David Bowie. “I did not finish fast enough,” she says. “It became a collection about memento mori.” Featuring skeletal iconography—“because that’s what we leave behind”—and other symbols of death and remembrance, the rarefied pieces are rendered in 18-karat white, rose and yellow gold and diamonds. “It’s all about making physical objects connected to our temporary lives to create memories.” Here, the self-described “elegant, flashy-chic grandmother”-styled Wilde, who was raised across Europe and New York, lets us in on the everyday gems that are catching her eye. sarahjanewilde.com.

WHAT’S HOT Spotlight

CREAM of the Crop

The founders of cosmetic wonder RETROUVÉ farm the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH in Malibu In kindergarten, Jami Morse Heidegger used to “work” in her grandfather’s store in New York City, a pharmacy called Kiehl’s, punching the keys on the cash register. As a teen, she experimented with essential oils and creams there, many of which inspired the signature Kiehl’s products we know and love. She eventually became the president and CEO, and sold the business to L’Oréal. She was just getting started. She and her husband, Klaus, decided to raise their family in California, where she went to high school and developed a love for an active lifestyle—a passion that flourished into their 25-acre Palms of Malibu ranch overlooking the Pacific Ocean, complete with show horses, ponies Spotty and Sally, two rescue dogs and two cats, found as kittens in an RV they once kept in their driveway. (The couple split their time between the ranch and their house in Chatsworth.) When she couldn’t find the right products for her parched skin, Jami collaborated with her cosmetic chemist back east to concoct the nourishing creams and oils she needed, much like she did as a teen at Kiehl’s. “I really just wanted to make the best skin care with the best ingredients,” she says. Her husband started giving out samples of the lotions and potions to friends in Europe—who kept asking for more—and he

suggested they turn it into a business: Retrouvé was born in 2014. The luxurious unisex skincare line, packaged in black airless, hermetically sealed containers that protect the integrity of the ingredients, is a “labor of love,” says Jami. Translated from French as “to find again,” Retrouvé is all about taking care of skin so that it’s healthy and youthful-looking. In June the couple will introduce Skin Brilliance Priming Pads that prep skin for the antioxidants, peptides, apple stem cells, algae extracts and vitamins in the Continued on p.132

Object of Desire Tito Pedrini can see the potential for a piece of jewelry in almost anything. “I get inspired by a lot of things in the moment,” says the Italian-born designer and gemologist, citing “cars, architecture, the moon” and even the black-ridged tips of a much-loved pair of shoes as points of influence. Beginning this summer, the jeweler, known for crafting one-of-a-kind pieces from rare stones, will count California among his many muses when he decamps to West Hollywood from Manhattan. “L.A. has a sense of vibrancy that really inspires my work and my life,” says Pedrini, whose most recent series includes an aweinspiring kunzite and black onyx ring. The fan-like sculpture sits high above the hand at 1¼ inches, cutting a dramatic profile. “It took months to be able to mount,” adds Pedrini. “But the result is quite striking.” titopedrini.com. • GILLIAN KOENIG

For Los Angeles-born, South Americanraised designer Sasha Verruno, nature informs fashion. “Growing up, my brother and I were always outside playing on the beach or in the jungle,” says Verruno of her childhood, fondly split between Brazil, Argentina and Los Angeles. FLOUR Power Evan Funke honed his formidable pasta skills by cooking alongside grandmothers he met in villages throughout Italy. Fittingly, the centerpiece of his new Venice restaurant, Felix, is a shimmering

glass-and-tile pasta lab, where diners can watch him make 18 to 20 different iterations each night. “I’m a custodian of these deeply rooted traditions,” says Funke. “The Italians have a word— campanilismo—that means pride of one’s origins, and we want to exude that here.”

His menu will center on classics such as squiggly trofie with pesto Genovese and gnocchi rich with saffron and uni. Regional dishes like favas served over burrata, and traditional pizzas such as a boscaiola made with wild mushrooms and fontina, round out the offerings. The bar, helmed by Brandyn Tepper, is equally obsessed with details, mixing seasonal bellinis with blood oranges, apricots or pears, and a tequila-and-pisco cocktail with housemade limoncello. 1023 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, 424-387-8622; felixla.com.

“I didn’t sleep the night before,” says 34-year-old Julia Sherman, creator of the leafy green-focused blog Salad for President. Sherman is referring to her first meeting with California culinary queen Alice Waters, who she communes with— while making a salad, of course—for her new recipe-filled tome, Salad for President: A Cookbook Inspired by Artists (Abrams, $35). “I ended up spending hours at her house, and by the end she was showing me her silk dresses—just two gals hanging out.” Since the blog launched in 2012, Sherman has used salad as a platform to collaborate with renowned artists, chefs and musicians—interviewing them while they chop and toss—then documenting the experiences with lush photography and illustrations along the way. Having earned her M.F.A. at Columbia University in the exclusive New Genres program, Sherman says, “I thought I would be a conceptual

artist my whole life, but the truth was, I was spending so much time in my garden and making salad.” The blog’s popularity surged in 2014, when Sherman was invited to design and program a rooftop salad garden at MoMA PS1 in New York. A year later, the J. Paul Getty Museum in L.A. commissioned her to do the same. In the book, Sherman conducts house calls with creative luminaries from Kyoto to Mexico City. Architect Harry Gesner, musician Laurie Anderson and others then share the resulting compositions-in-a-bowl, from appetizer-friendly fare such as collard chiffonade salad to heartier dishes including flank steak and bean sprouts with miso-kimchi dressing. Sherman loves that salad has the potential to be accessible or complicated. “I’m cool with appealing to the person who just wants to know what to make tonight, who’s like, ‘What the hell is celeriac?’ But I’m also interested in talking to the person who wants to know why Robert Irwin went from painting to a post-studio practice early on in his career. To create one space where all of that can happen is my ideal.” saladforpresident.com.

In the 10 years since former Smuin dancer Celia Fushille took over the reins of Michael Smuin’s San Francisco ballet company, the muse-turned-artistic director has made her priorities known. For Fushille, who has the distinction of being one of the few female artistic directors in the business, the dancer comes first. “I’m very aware that a dancer’s career is short,” she says. “They are trying to pack some really significant experiences into 15 or so years.” Her new program, Dance Series 02, is built around taking chances on talent. She’s asked company member Nicole Haskins to produce her first 20-minute piece, set to Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence,” while more established artist Trey McIntyre presents a new work influenced by the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Choreographer-in-Residence

Amy Seiwert relaunches her Broken Open, set to experimental music by cellist-composer Julia Kent. “It’s exciting for me to encourage Amy and Nicole,” says Fushille. “And Trey—he is also such a unique visionary. I wanted the dancers to have that.” May 5-7, Mountain View; May 12-13, Walnut Creek; May 1928, San Francisco; June 2-3, Carmel-bythe-Sea; smuinballet.org.

In person, Mara McCarthy, owner of The Box gallery, doesn’t tick any boxes. She’s warm and casual, cool with her wavy red hair, black leather jacket and scarf—kind of the opposite of the stereotypical sleek, unapproachable gallerist. “I’m not really coming from a space of sales,” she admits over a cup of tea near her gallery on L.A’s Traction Avenue. “And I like my beat-up door.” Exhibitions at The Box push buttons; some play with the idea of intergenerational resonance between artists, others attempt to educate galleryphiles by showcasing challenging work from nonprofits such as the Los Angeles Department of Poverty—which highlights prison overcrowding and settlements, refugee camps and gated communities. “Art can be information and it can challenge you emotionally, physically, formally,” McCarthy says. And it’s not surprising that cross-generational dynamics would be a source of interest to her, either. She’s the daughter of Los Angeles artist Paul McCarthy and grew up in a milieu where art talk was always in the air. This year, her first as part of the selection committee for Frieze New York (May 5-7), McCarthy has sought work that’s a little more esoteric and a little less well-known. “I think that in some way I was invited to bring that perspective and balance,” she notes. For her, pieces from West Coast galleries such as Anglim Gilbert impress because they’re “smart in a quiet a way.” And for her own booth, McCarthy is sharing a highly curated group of three artists: Frenchman Julien Bismuth, L.A. superconnector Eugenia P. Butler and Pasadena-born artist Barbara T. Smith are all in some way related. “The work has a conversation with each other,” McCarthy says. 805 Traction Ave., L.A., 213-6251747; theboxla.com; frieze.com.

More than 100 art, fashion and design luminaries joined C Founder and Editorial Director Jennifer Hale to celebrate the golden anniversary of South Coast Plaza at The Getty Center in Los Angeles. “Our partnership with C goes back a long time, really since the inception of the magazine. So, it only made sense that on the 50th anniversary of South Coast Plaza we would celebrate with our friends,” said Debra Gunn Downing, the institution’s executive director of marketing, as guests were escorted into the restaurant, where six dramatic, custom-made art deco tables were revealed, outfitted in tall candelabras and arrangements of anemones with English and Black Baccara roses. “To me, this event has turned into a piece of art within the art museum. I love that,” said Downing. “It all blends into one artistic moment. The Segerstrom family, who owns South Coast Plaza, are very engaged and supportive of the arts. It’s been a lifelong legacy of the family and very fitting for us to be in this environment to celebrate.” After taking selfies with robot-clad models—inspired by C’s futuristic fashion shoot with South Coast Plaza for the March issue— guests took their seats and enjoyed a three-course meal and a soundtrack by DJ Nikki Pennie. “Jennifer [Hale] always puts together a great group of people. She’s great at curating,” said florist-to-thestars Eric Buterbaugh over dinner. “And The Getty is such an iconic place. When you’re up here it always feels like magic. It all makes me very happy.”

That red bathing suit—the low-cut scoop neck, extra-high waist, and oversized lifeguard patch stitched on the hip, viewed perennially in slow motion—is as iconic as TV memorabilia gets. For actor Kelly Rohrbach, a 27-year-old model, slipping into the suit and making the role of C.J. Parker her own in this month’s big-screen adaptation of Baywatch was a unique challenge.

the 5’9” blonde—who projects a kind of wholesome, athletic sexiness—was an obvious choice for the cast, which has Dwayne Johnson at its center as Mitch Buchanan, and also stars Priyanka Chopra and Zac Efron. Offscreen, however, the Greenwich, Conn., native is a far cry from Anderson and her Playboy centerfold, Tommy Lee-era persona. For

“I told the PRODUCERS that [the character] seemed a little outdated. She was ogled, more like an OBJECT than a PERSON. I said, ‘I don’t think that’s modern. What if we just made her a SUPER-COOL GIRL?’” For a generation of television watchers in the ’90s, long before the national obsession with The Bachelor or the Real Housewives franchises took hold, Baywatch was the guiltiest of all pleasures. Lead David Hasselhoff, wearing only swim trunks, a whistle and Hawaiian Tropic SPF 4, worked hard to keep the beach safe for vacationers and grappled with interpersonal dramas, buoyed by a revolving cast of sexpots that came to embody the Southern California ideal. It’s fair to say that many of the show’s most devoted viewers would have been perfectly happy to watch beauties Yasmine Bleeth, Carmen Electra and Traci Bingham bound into the surf to save yet another sad sack from drowning with the sound off (narrative wasn’t exactly the selling point). But the most famous alum, the one whose tank suit was likely the hardest to fill in the casting of director Seth Gordon’s new Baywatch movie, was Pamela Anderson. “I spend about half of the movie in that red suit,” says Rohrbach, who squeezes in a phone call amid a daylong stretch of meetings to talk about the movie and is game to laugh at the feature-length spoof of the show. A Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, she is no stranger to long beach days in front of the camera. In that respect,

starters, Rohrbach was introduced to acting through her first passion: golf. “I was on the golf team at Georgetown University,” she says. “I was recruited to play there out of high school, and I liked the team and the coach. Some of the other athletes suggested taking an acting class because it was easy and the teacher was nice!” What started as an “easy A” turned out to be a life-changing decision. Rohrbach spent a year abroad at a drama conservatory in London, then after graduating moved directly to L.A. “I felt it in my bones,” she says. “I just knew it was what I wanted to do.” While it isn’t the typical trajectory for an actor to go from collegiate athlete to guest-starring roles on Two and a Half Men and Rizzoli & Isles, Rohrbach says that the time she spent on the course and traveling the globe on the golf team prepared her for the often-solitary pursuit of acting. Having the confidence to jetset on her own, motivating herself to better her last score, and finding focus and mental clarity under pressure are all traits she developed through golf that she applies to her acting. “My dad was a really good golfer, and I started playing with him when I was about 4 or 5,” she says. “I’m one of five kids, and he would always ask Continued on p.132

Designed by Trip Haenisch and incorporating furnishings McMillan has collected over the years, spanning a Frank Lloyd Wright floor lamp to a George Nakashima rough plank bed, it’s a surprisingly calm, tangibly warm environment, carefully edited with a discerning eye. “Chris likes smart, interesting things, and I like to design a collected look, so it was a great match,” says Haenisch. A rich brown palette, from the oak floors to the cognac- and caramel-color leather chairs, sets the tone. The focused nature of the color scheme mimics that of McMillan’s own wardrobe: a uniform of AllSaints gray trousers topped with a James Perse T-shirt in black, white or gray, and classic Vans slip-ons. Pops of color in his home derive from his art collection, which includes cartoon-inspired pieces by street artist Kaws and a mug shot of Jane Fonda following her arrest for protesting the Vietnam War, awash in a pink tone (his favorite color). McMillan’s condo is part of a seven-unit apartment building with a striking semicircular design built in 1954 by the late

prolific architect Edward Fickett, whose wide-ranging output includes a master plan for Edwards Air Force Base and homes for the likes of Joan Crawford, Dick Clark and Ava Gardner. Haenisch and his business partner Hadi Halawani bought the condo in 2012 and completely renovated it, covering black metal columns in reclaimed wood, opening the kitchen up to the dining area, woodpaneling the home office (“I wanted one room to be a cozy room,” says Haenisch), and adding wood beams to the ceilings. “I got a call about five years ago from Hadi and Trip,” recalls McMillan of first hearing about the place. (The designer and the hairstylist, who cuts Haenisch’s hair, have been friends for years and share a client in actress Courteney Cox.) “I had a flight to Berlin that afternoon, and I looked at it and made an offer from the car on the way to the airport.” Lately, McMillan, who recently took over sole ownership of his salon, is spending more time at home with his trio of Parson Russell Terriers, with whom he shares his bed. It’s an arrangement that jives with his reputation for being open-hearted and MAY 2017 C 105

loyal—the sort of industry power player who even after making it big, honored the original rate he charged the elderly clients who came to see him when he was starting out in a little salon in Manhattan Beach. It stands to reason that his home base would be equally devoid of pretension. “It fits him,” says Haenisch of the surrounds. “It’s masculine, it’s organic and it’s fun.” •

British artist DAVID DOWNTON has captured some of the most beautiful women in the world, anthologized in a new L.A. EXHIBITION

“I’m trying to capture the essence, the sense of a memory, as if they’ve just floated onto the surface of the paper,” says portraitist David Downton from his suite at Claridge’s in London. “I want it to look as if something just happened, something was left unsaid.” With his elegant brushstrokes, the British artist has created portraits of some of the world’s most recognizable and beautiful women, including Cate Blanchett, Catherine Deneuve, Diane von Furstenberg and Dita Von Teese. Downton has just arrived in Los Angeles to launch his latest venture: a one-year exhibition of his “Icon Series” at Mary Ta’s Minotti Los Angeles and Mass Beverly showrooms, featuring large-scale portraits on paper of celebrated women, small drawings, medium-format works and a limited number of exclusive portrait commissions that start at $15,000. When Downton sits to sketch his subjects, often he has only an hour or two with each. “I get to know the person as much as I can in the sitting. What I look for above everything is a sense of self,” he says. “A classic beauty isn’t of much interest to

THANDIE NEWTON “I ran into Thandie at the Schiaparelli show in Paris in January and arranged a sitting in London (she wore the same Schiaparelli couture). With her ongoing role in Westworld and the guest lead in the U.K. crime drama Line of Duty, she is at the top of her game—beauty and intensity personified.” Opposite: DITA VON TEESE “I have drawn Dita often. She is, as I’m fond of saying, a genuine fake. Or perhaps a real illusion would be more polite: the blonde from Michigan who dreamed big (and in color) and made the world see things her way. ‘Glamour every minute, every day’ is her mantra, and she is as good as her word.”

CATE BLANCHETT “This was for the cover of Vogue Australia in 2009. It was a banner day for me. Not only did I get to work with the brilliant and beautiful Cate Blanchett (everyone’s idea of a gold standard), but the issue also became the fastest selling in the history of the magazine—a small victory for artists and illustrators in our photo-saturated world.”

draw. I love that great charm, individuality and intelligence; all of this comes together. I translate and respond.” He sketches page after page while talking to subjects, collecting what he calls “the raw material,” but it’s back at the studio that he does the heavy lifting with the lightest of brushstrokes—elegantly overlapping and measured—that crystallize the unique spirit of each subject. “David’s talent is that he really enjoys people, and he actually listens and looks

at you walking across the room,” says Ta. “These days we are so busy we don’t stop. He stops. He listens. He perceives. His portraits are almost like reflections.” Downton began as a fashion illustrator more than 20 years ago, sketching for houses like Chanel and Valentino, and his work has been featured everywhere from Vogue to Vanity Fair. Since 2011, he has been artist in residence at Claridge’s, rendering some of the hotel’s most wellreputed guests, from Sarah Jessica Parker to

Christian Louboutin. Bringing his art to Los Angeles comes as part of a broader initiative by his U.S. agent Lauren Gurvich to introduce British artists to the American market, with a concentration on California in particular. For Downton, it marks the next step in a storied career. “Engaging with a new audience, there’s a reminder that there is always further to go,” he says. “It feels like a new beginning, like I’ve begun a new dance.” minotti-la.com; massbeverly.com; daviddownton.com •

SARAH HENDLER and her husband, chef VINNY DOTOLO, throw an effortless AL FRESCO (tbd) LUNCH for friends to toast her inaugural JEWELRY LINE

Sarah Hendler and Vinny Dotolo are known for many things. As one half of the culinary duo behind the L.A. dining destinations Animal, Son of a Gun and Jon & Vinny’s, Dotolo and his partner, Jon Shook, are widely regarded as two of the best chefs in the city. Hendler, who started out in film production before transitioning to a supporting role in her husband’s culinary endeavors, recently stepped into the spotlight herself as a rising-star jewelry designer with her own namesake line. But among friends, the couple is best known for their effortless approach to entertaining at their home in Hancock Park, which they share with their two sons, ages 3 and 5. Nowhere is their love for bringing people together over food more apparent than on this spring afternoon, while Dotolo and Hendler are welcoming some of their closest friends to join them for a casual celebratory lunch prepared by Dotolo to fete Hendler’s vintage-inspired gems. “I always remember Sarah having a great jewelry collection,” says film production designer and interior designer Ruth De Jong, who arrives early to lend a hand, crafting the cheery outdoor table setting and artfully arranging fresh blooms she’s picked up from the flower market in DTLA, not far from her De Jong & Co. showroom. (No stranger to Hendler and Dotolo’s aesthetic preferences, De Jong designed Son of a Gun; for the last two years she has also been reimagining the couple’s Tudor-style home.) “It’s been awesome to see her take this idea and run with it.” Credit Hendler’s grandmothers, Ethel and Shirley, and mother, Adrienne, who instilled a love for jewels in the Long Island native at an early age. “I’ve always been fascinated by jewelry,” says Hendler,

wearing a RTH dress paired with oneof-a-kind oversize emerald-and-diamond spear earrings from her collection in collaboration with Gemfields—last seen dangling from the ears of red-carpet darling Ruth Negga at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. “I’m a person who has a passion for it, who has researched it.” After curating a wildly popular selection of vintage and estate pieces for Nickey Kehoe under the label Sarah Hendler Estate, Hendler decided to launch her own fine jewelry line in 2016, taking cues from art deco family heirlooms, and naming the collections after her grandmothers. “It’s modern with a nod to the past,” says Hendler of the nearly 40-piece line ($1,260-$15,500), which was picked up by Bergdorf Goodman. The pieces are handcrafted in DTLA and feature delicate enamel details, with colorful gems set in 18-karat gold. “It’s fine jewelry that will stand the test of time.” As Dotolo helms the stoves with Spotify’s Cyndi Lauper channel playing in the background, friends begin to arrive and gather in the kitchen, including actor Colin Hanks and his wife, Sam, vice president of casting at production company Magical Elves. “There’s this ease in which Vinny is able to make all this really delicious food,” muses Hanks, who befriended Hendler on the set of the 2002 comedy Orange County. “But we come because of the company more than anything else. They are really solid people who are a joy to be around. Those are the exact people you want to be sitting with at a table for hours at a time.” All talk quickly turns to pieces from Hendler’s jewelry line displayed on the family dining table. “Ever since I’ve known Sarah, she has always rocked the dopest jewelry,” says Helen Johannesen, proprietor of Helen’s Wines at Jon & Vinny’s, who eagerly tries on several earrings and rings. Though she already owns several pieces from Hendler’s vintage offerings, “I borrow from her quite a lot,” admits Johannesen. “I like that you can wear Sarah’s line with anything,” adds Maria Gabriel, who arrives with her husband and business partner Louis Gabriel of architecture and bespoke furniture studio Gabriel Projects (Hendler introduced the couple). “Given the de Young’s location in Golden Gate Park—the epicenter of the movement— the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have been collecting works from the Summer of Love since it happened,” explains the institution’s director, Max Hollein, who is celebrating the counterculture phenomenon on its golden anniversary with a new exhibit through Aug. 20 ((deyoung. famsf.org famsf.org). The Vienna-born artworld power player, who joined FAMSF last summer, recognizes the importance of the era: “So much of San Francisco’s identity was built during this time.” Here, his local favorites: • Dolores Park It’s recently renovated, and in the spring and summer months it mutates into a great urban performance ground; going there makes me feel young again. • Southern Exposure A great place to see cutting-edge visual and performance art. You walk in and, in all likelihood, will have a special experience. soex.org. • Ebisu It is always crowded—for a reason. It is easily some of the best and most affordable sushi in town. ebisusushi.com. • The tower at the de Young The twisting arm rises 144 feet above the city and provides a stunning 360-degree view of San Francisco. • Hippie Hill Given our “Summer of Love” show, this is the best place to find me as I reflect on my time in the city. Callie Hernandez is good at keeping secrets—she’s had a lot of practice, taking on parts in high-profile, closely guarded projects such as May’s Alien: Covenant, the Ridley Scottdirected sequel to his 2012 sci-fi thriller Prometheus. “I can’t even tell my mother anything,” the actor insists, declining to discuss her role in the film that stars Michael Fassbender, James Franco and Katherine Waterston. Hernandez is newly accustomed to working with A-listers, after starring alongside Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the Oscarwinning musical La La Land. “I was always inclined to perform in one way or another,” says the former cellist. Once she committed to becoming an actor, “it was all I could dream about,” she adds—a focused mindset that helped her make it through her early days of sleeping on friends’ couches while pursuing a career in New York. Her luck changed upon moving to L.A. in 2014, and things haven’t slowed down since. Case in point: The Los Feliz resident is currently shooting season two of Epix’s comedy series Graves with Nick Nolte; her sci-fi thriller The Endless debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in April; and she recently wrapped David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake with Andrew Garfield. “It’s a Californian neo-noir thriller,” she adds. “I think I can say that.” • LINDZI SCHARF
