Founder’s Letter

There was a time when it was easy to spot a bride: She was the one with the poufy Princess Diana sleeves, the fake lashes, the updo, the cathedral-length veil or the cascading white blossom bouquet. She was the one wearing all things “look at me!” Of course, there are still plenty who ascribe to the more-is-more approach—if there’s any day to do it, it’s this one! (Those who fall into this over-the-top glam camp should turn directly to the Chanel Haute Couture pink organza confection on p.31 for inspiration.) But today, the look of a bride is as open to interpretation, and potentially subtle, as it’s ever been. Take the real weddings in this issue as a sample set. Today’s bride dons anything from celebrity publicist Ruth Bernstein’s über-romantic lace number with off-theshoulder statement sleeves (p.100) to Jesse Chamberlin’s color-drenched Gucci maxi dress (p.96). And, in California especially, she can be found saying “I do” with the shimmering Pacific as a backdrop...or an exuberant balloon drop, as her personality dictates. Our fashion portfolio (p.72) echoes this sartorial diversity, spanning sirenworthy cascading frocks with cutouts to more conceptual takes blanketed with graphic patterns. With this in mind, we present a spectrum of wedding styles to suit couples of all kinds—the romantic, the modern and, yes, even the traditional. Regardless of your wedding type, after the dress (or suit for that matter), it’s often all about the details: the calligraphy (look no further than the expertise of Ellen Weldon, p.54), the culinary delights (say cheese on p.60) and flowers (flirt with the woodland look on p.27). We’ve surveyed all that’s new and notable in the Golden State and beyond—including destination wedding spots and honeymoon escapes in the Maldives, Costa Rica and Bora Bora. Whatever your style, in the end it’s the less tangible things that identify the bride on her big day—the authentic happiness she’s emanating, for one—and if we can play even a small role in helping you get to that magical point where everything comes together, and you can focus on being present and appreciating what’s in front of you, well then we’re happy too.

Emma’s best friend (who also was the officiant) lent her a cathedral-length Carolina Herrera veil, which Emma wore with a slinky slip dress from A La Robe. The couple was married in their backyard in front of a dozen of their loved ones before sitting down to dinner in the front garden. Venice-based chef Ella Freyinger prepared the meal, and their “wedding cake” was a berry pie from Gjusta. Emma’s brother played guitar as the group danced the night away. A newly revised and updated collector’s edition of the late, great designer Oleg Cassini’s definitive fashion tome The Wedding Dress (Rizzoli New York, $65) hits shelves this October, providing de rigeur reading for the high-fashionminded bride. Alongside work-of-art pieces by Cassini himself (known for helping to shape the style of such icons as Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy), the book features looks by Chanel, Dior and McQueen; imagery by Arthur Elgort, David LaChapelle and Irving Penn; and even delves into the historical rise of the ultimate sartorial statement.

Emma Crowther and Matt Goodwin had been engaged for a while but had yet to make any real wedding arrangements: They had just settled down into a 90-yearold Spanish Colonial house in Brentwood and were busy with plans to reopen a hotel, The Surfrider Malibu. Then the issue of Emma’s visa came up (she’s Australian and Matt was born and raised in Ventura County), so they figured they should make it official sooner rather than later—and Emma’s astrologist determined the best day was a mere two weeks away. Fortunately, Emma is also the international brand director of wedding style site The Lane, so she had an innate sense of how the weekend should unfold. On Friday they rented a 1957 Porsche Speedster and drove to the Santa Barbara courthouse to pick up their marriage certificate, then

FOR HER OWN OJAI NUPTIALS TO SUNG CHAE, PLANNER EMILY PARK ELEVATES THE CONCEPT OF A DIY WEDDING TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

Emily Park has been a part of some beautiful, large-scale weddings as a planner at renowned events firm Oren Co, but for her own wedding last spring to Sung Chae, the director of acquisitions at MGM, she wanted something small, especially since she would be producing the entire thing herself. “The problem was you don’t really have the time, but you can’t really trust anyone else—and I couldn’t imagine putting all the burden on one of my co-workers,” she says. So she became her own client, in a sense, and turned to her trusted inner circle for a little help along the way. The couple discovered their venue, Thacher House, a charming bed-andbreakfast, thanks to Emily’s boss, Yifat Oren, who has a home just down the road. “I remember driving up to Ojai to do a FA L L W E D D I N G S 2 0 1 7

site visit and seeing all the wildflowers in bloom with the smell of orange blossoms in the air…I designed my event based on that moment,” Emily says. The underlying citrus theme surfaced on everything from the stamps on the invitations by Tiny Pine Press to the kumquat napkin treatments atop each place setting. (By their lateMarch wedding date, kumquat season had actually just ended, so her florist and friend Oma Arriola had to special order them from the market.) The tables also featured bud vases filled with delicate orange and yellow blooms. “I wanted it to feel like my friends, my mom and I all went out and picked wildflowers that day,” she says. The ceremony setting was deliberately pared down, too. As an alternative to an imposing structure, one of Emily’s

As far as catwalk finale moments go, the coveted honor of walking for Chanel Haute Couture is a lofty one, and this season it was bestowed on Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis’ 18-year-old daughter, Lily-Rose. In front of a re-creation of Coco Chanel’s famed Rue Cambon art deco mirrored staircase, the actor and model wore a pink organza extravaganza of puffs and ruffles, with a Peter Pan collar and jeweled buttons. Her hair scraped back into a neat bun, and with simple, pareddown makeup, the younger Depp still managed to own and inhabit the dress rather than have the fashion take over— surely the aim for the most memorable bride’s big day. Before he proposed to his now-wife, Elsa Dannerstedt, denim pioneer Jerome Dahan had a designer in mind for his bride’s custom gown. “It felt like an incredible gesture of good faith and trust, as well as an opportunity to participate in such a meaningful way in my friend’s most important moment,” says Noam Hanoch, whom Jerome approached with the offer to envision Elsa’s dream dress a week before their engagement at The Mercer hotel in NYC. No stranger to Hanoch’s work, Jerome first tapped the designer in 2003 for his then-newly launched denim line, Citizens of Humanity, where Hanoch remained until launching his own eponymous women’s line in 2014. Together with Elsa and Jerome, Hanoch is set to debut a new L.A.-based high-end denim line, Jean Atelier (jeanatelier.com), this fall. But a wedding gown was never in his repertoire until now. “We both knew he would design and create something beautiful,” says Elsa, a fashion entrepreneur who first met Jerome at an art gallery in 2009. “The only thing I knew before going into it was that I wanted part of the dress to be fitted, but still feel like a ‘real’ wedding dress and not too revealing.” Several dress-shopping trips (and countless hours spent conducting online research) later, Hanoch presented Elsa with the first sketch of her wedding dress, befit for an outdoor spring wedding at Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards. Drawing upon Max Rée’s costumes for the 1935 film adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (“layers upon layers of shimmering tulle under the twinkling evening stars,” he says), Hanoch dreamed up an airy 1930s bias-cut goddess dress fashioned from Italian silk crepe, culminating in a cascade of Parisian tulle and lace. “I didn’t make any revisions,” says Elsa. “It was perfect for me.” • LESLEY McKENZIE

ELLEN WELDON REFINES THE ART OF HANDWRITING

Ellen Weldon may have received an F in sixth-grade handwriting, but that didn’t stop her from making the ultimate turnaround: She perfected her penmanship and made it into a career. Mastering the art of elegant script has propelled Weldon to calligraph for clients including Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Estée Lauder, and to form Ellen Weldon Design for her refined custom invitations. “I do not have a catalog; each job is unique,” says the New York City-based Weldon. “We do watercolors, maps, home drawings, hand engraving, silk-screening, letterpress—whatever each client wants, we create it.” Weldon recently introduced her designs to an intimate group in Montecito over an alfresco lunch at Sandi Nicholson’s Solana estate. Personal note cards tied into the lavender palette and floral arrangements with ink to match. Currently color is trending, she notes, adding that dark aubergine and smoky blues are big for fall, in addition to hand-drawn monograms on neutral backgrounds. “The paper stock may be white or soft cream,” she says, “but the colors chosen are bright and cheerful, full of life.”

Design turn

With global clients spanning L.A. to Paris, Weldon continues to perfect celebrations, infusing personalization and fine etiquette into the modern world. The culinary team at POST RANCH INN prepare the smoked SCHOCH DAIRY cheese, the last course of the meal. Right: The menu incorporated locally grown mushrooms as a nod to Jonathan’s family’s business.

Menu turn

Jonathan’s family owns Osborn Mushroom Farm in upstate New York, and the bride and groom were eager to incorporate the ingredient into the menu. As luck would have it, Post Ranch Inn has a mushroom greenhouse on the property. The couple walked the gardens early on and met with the culinary team to plan around what was grown, foraged and in season. “We wanted to give our guests a sense of place and season by showcasing the best of coastal Northern California cuisine,” Callista says. Following the vows, 35 guests toasted with Pliny the Elder beer and sparkling blackberry bourbon cocktails. The menu included mushroomand-barley risotto with black truffle and olive-crusted lamb,

roasted on a spit just beyond tables appointed with Heath Ceramics settings. Redwood tree logos graced the decor—an earthy, textural palette of wood, leather, brass and orange—while mini cakes by The Butter End Cakery were adorned with hand-painted poppies. Afterward, the Santa Monica-based bride and groom honeymooned in Sri Lanka, where they dined on curry every day. • JENNIFER BLAISE KRAMER

LACIE HANSEN PHOTOGRAPHY

With an adventurous spirit—their audacious proposal took place atop Mount Kilimanjaro—Syracuse University sweethearts Callista Sessler and Jonathan Osborn chose Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn as the setting for their nuptials, thanks to its “heart-stopping views” and attention to local food. Given that Callista’s life revolves around weddings—she’s an event planner and owner of Callista & Company (callistaandco.com)—she’s most at ease being behind the scenes on the big day. So when it came time for her own wedding to entertainment banker Jonathan, she admits, “It was difficult for me to step out of my comfort zone as coordinator to embrace the role of the bride.” Thankfully, the natural beauty of the event’s coastal location, and the culinary riches it has to offer, helped her to make the shift.

Malibu Dream Until recently, those seeking a seaside honeymoon in Malibu had few options. Now, after its long-awaited opening in late April, Nobu Ryokan Malibu is taking limited reservations for its 16 sleek and exclusive rooms, attended by a seasoned staff of 25. The teak-clad structure and its perfectly manicured Japanese gardens hover just above the Pacific, providing direct coastal

access to Malibu’s prime Carbon Beach. Once a 1950s surfside motel, the property required a full, four-year renovation under the direction of Shawmut Design and Construction, TAL Studio, Montalba Architects and Studio PCH, which rolled out a focused scheme of tan-hued linens, ipe wood, limestone and cozy fireplaces. AN UNSPOILED BEACH DESTINATION ENCHANTS FROM PROPOSAL TO HONEYMOON

Travel turn

Led by a friend, the ceremony coincided with what Monica describes as “the most magical sunset of the whole week.” During the sumptuous dinner, guests ordered from Florblanca’s Nectar restaurant menu (“They rely heavily on local and seasonal produce and organically raised meats,” and naturally, “there’s so much fresh seafood,” Andrew says) and lingered at the candlelit communal table, followed by a beach bonfire and homemade s’mores. While the couple didn’t officially plan a post-wedding getaway, the nuptials’ idyllic location proved to have another major advantage: “We extended our stay, and parlayed it into a honeymoon,” Andrew says. florblanca.com. • JESSICA RITZ

JENNIFER HARTER

When Monica Yoder and Andrew Kirschner got engaged at a waterfall while staying at Florblanca resort in the rustic Costa Rican surf town of Playa Santa Teresa last summer, they agreed on returning to the intimate, boho-chic property for the wedding itself. From that point until the big day in spring, “everything happened so easily,” Monica says. “We wanted the wedding essentially to be a dinner party.” Given that Andrew is a celebrated chef and a passionate surfer, they couldn’t have chosen a better destination for their gathering of 26 close family and friends. “We’re both laid-back people and intentionally didn’t want to spend too much energy on the small details,” says Andrew, who is the chef and owner of Tar & Roses in Santa Monica, where their romance first bloomed (and where Monica now works alongside him on the operations side). They met in 2014; Monica had moved across the street from the acclaimed eatery and went in one night for a glass of wine. The next day, Andrew asked her on a date. “We’ve been together every day since,” she says.

The first time Emma Ludbrook and Tom Windish laid eyes upon one another was at a bus stop in Park City, Utah, after an introduction by a mutual friend at the Sundance Film Festival. “I told Tom I would be attending a party by rival agency CAA that night,” recalls Emma, a producer for Paradox. Tom, however, a music booking agent and then president and founder of The Windish Agency, was turned away at the door. Undeterred, explains Emma, “he schemed his way into the party for the chance to say hello again.” The risk paid off: A few months later back in Los Angeles, after a first date that included transcendental meditation and a trip to The Magic Castle, the pair struck up a relationship. On a February evening this past winter, two years after their first encounter, the couple tied the knot in an exquisite ceremony atop the historic stairs of The MacArthur (formerly the Park Plaza Hotel) in Downtown L.A. Emma’s producing partner, Jared Leto, officiated the elegant affair, marrying the two in front of 350 guests, including Emma’s parents, who traveled from Australia, and Tom’s family from upstate New York. “Beyond confirming our vows, walking down the staircase into the arms of all of our family and friends was the highlight of my night,” says Tom, who donned a Calvin Klein tux and by his own account “the biggest and longest-lasting smile on my face.”

Forgoing a traditional sit-down dinner for finger food, guests indulged in bites from In-N-Out Burger and a cake from Momofuku Milk Bar, and outlasted the bride and groom on the dance floor until the wee hours of the morning. “There’s no one part that’s our favorite,” says Emma. “Perhaps that we have each found our favorite person in each other.” • PLANNER AND FLORIST Kate Thompson, Amaroq Design ENTERTAINMENT Bob Moses, Four Tet and Diplo VIDEOGRAPHER Nathan Hay, Eric Corrales SHOES Charlotte Olympia JEWELRY Neil Lane CAKE Momofuku Milk Bar HAIR Stephanie Tea MAKEUP Vanessa Haro

Samantha Silna knew she’d found the one after her now-husband Patrick Castles hand-delivered an unexpected gift. “A couple weeks after we met, he dropped by to give me a set of vintageinspired Native American figurine candles,” she says. “As silly as it sounds, in that moment I knew.” Three years later, the pair—who had their first encounter at Venice’s The Otheroom in 2012—found magic once again in Yosemite. After rafting down the Tuolumne during the day, at a dinner set on the balcony of Fork & Love Restaurant, Patrick got down on one knee with a ring he designed, featuring a diamond from his mother’s own engagement. The couple, who co-founded the Surfing Donkey Cocktail Co., exchanged vows last fall in Goleta, where Samantha arrived at the grounds of Dos Pueblos Ranch in a vintage Jaguar convertible. Stepping out in a classic Oscar de la Renta dress and Christian Louboutin shoes, she found the walk to the altar an especially emotional one. “I lost my father a few months before our wedding,” she says. “Having my mom walk me down the aisle to my husband was incredibly special. We laughed and cried as we held each other.” The planners at Bash Please translated Samantha’s vision—“casual elegance from a bygone time”—with touches including hand-drawn astronomical maps by illustrator Joya Rose, intended for guests to use for stargazing after the reception. The couple’s first dance, to a version of “I Love You Always Forever,” featured choreography with lifts masterminded by professional dancer Julz Tocker. From there, guests swarmed the dance floor, taking time out to hit the photo booth, until Samantha and Patrick drove off to begin their next chapter. “My cousin’s young daughter followed along the car, waving,” Samantha recalls. “It was the sweetest thing—like she thought I was a princess driving off with my prince.” • ENTERTAINMENT Midnight Special (West Coast Music) DRESS Oscar de la Renta SUIT The Black Tux CATERER Whoa Nelly and Hannah’s Bananas HONEYMOON Ever After Honeymoons

A dive bar in Silver Lake was where it all started for Hillary Kerr, the co-founder of Clique Media Group, and Jonathan Leahy, a music supervisor for film and TV. After he proposed, Jonathan’s sole request was that they get married within the year, which happened to be 2016. Hillary explains, “He’s a numbers nerd, and 16 is a perfect square.” Hillary thought it was a reasonable request and called on astrologist Susan Miller to help her narrow in on an auspicious date. “I figured the one time it was probably OK to call her was for my wedding,” says Hillary. At the end of their session, they had identified a Saturday in December when, as Hillary was told, “the heavens would look favorably upon us.” Hillary and Jonathan’s next move was to book the Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs, where they spent their first New Year’s Eve together as a couple. Hillary, whose company runs the fashion website Who What Wear, is especially fond of 1950s style and “anything that’s Hitchcock-heroine adjacent,” so their wedding toed a careful balance between past and present. The festivities kicked off with a joint bachelor/bachelorette party in the desert and a casual cocktail-style welcome party at the hotel on Friday. On Saturday, the 124 guests gathered on a grassy lawn with the hazy San Jacinto Mountains looming in the background. Hillary and Jonathan were married under a dense, rose-covered birchwood chuppah and, in the spirit of inclusivity, one of their readings was a passage from the Defense of Marriage Act. While they come from different backgrounds—he’s from New Hampshire and she grew up in La Jolla, he’s a Taurus and she’s a Virgo—music is one thing that has always brought them together. Jonathan wrote an original score for Hillary’s processional, and then he surprised her with an obscure Lindsey Buckingham/ Stevie Nicks song he had reworked for their recessional. Dinner around the pool led to dancing inside the historic Purple Palm dining room, where their DJ performed on vinyl for hours. At the end of the night (Hillary had changed into a black Brandon Maxwell cocktail dress), the pair was, to no one’s surprise, the last two on the dance floor. • PLANNER Beth Helmstetter Events FLORIST Hollyflora ENTERTAINMENT (RECEPTION) Zach Cowie DRESS Reem Acra SUIT Valentino RINGS Ernie Eichberg STATIONERY Lola Gonzalez, CMG’s Executive Creative Director of Brands HAIR Jen Atkin MAKEUP Joey Maalouf

Ask Jesse Chamberlin what makes a ceremony unforgettable, and the photographer will reveal the recipe she formulated while capturing more than 500 weddings: unique details, sincerity and surprise. “The most memorable ones are those that are made personal—not just what is trendy,” explains Jesse, who applied the plan to her own nuptials with her beau, multimedia artist Jimmy Marble. The L.A.-based couple’s relationship was one-of-a-kind from the get-go. “On our first date two years ago in Point Dume, we drank wine, swam, took pictures and laughed,” remembers Jimmy. “I knew right there on that beach that if I could somehow spend every day with this woman, I would in a heartbeat.” Sure enough, just three months later they celebrated their engagement atop a Teotihuacán pyramid in Mexico, and sent out fortune-cookie invitations to welcome 170 guests to San Luis Obispo’s belovedly kitschy Madonna Inn. The love-drenched day kicked off with a ceremony in the ballroom, where a choir of friends sang Beach Boys tunes while Jimmy, Jesse (in a

For help with his proposal to celebrity publicist Ruth Bernstein, management consultant Matt Levin looked to a trusted advisor: his 9-year-old niece. “It really was her brainchild,” he says. The setting was a joint family barbecue at Matt’s sister’s house. After dinner, the couple’s two nieces and nephew performed an original play whose plot hinged on a prince looking for his princess—a role assigned to Ruth. Matt stepped in as prince, getting down on his knee with a delicate round diamond engagement ring from jeweler Lorraine Schwartz. The pair, who met through a set-up in 2015, chose Crossroads Estate in Los Olivos as the venue for their May nuptials. “Being away from everything—in an organic environment where you really can appreciate the people you’re with and the experience you’re having—was the most important thing,” says Ruth. A week before the first fitting of her offthe-shoulder lace Reem Acra gown, she discovered one more reason to celebrate: They’re expecting a baby girl, due at the end of September. The morning of the wedding, the bride awoke in a house on the property (where she, Matt, their sisters and their families all stayed together—“one of the best parts of the whole thing,” she says), and handmade the place cards and table numbers. “Doing what I do for a living, balancing things coming together in a lot of little details is normal, so it wasn’t stressful as much as a fun project,” says Ruth, whose clients include Kristen Stewart, Katy Perry and Patrick Dempsey. She walked down the aisle to her friend Sara Mann’s live performance of Rachel Platten’s “Better Place.” The couple’s first dance, to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” set the tone for the

After the ceremony, the newlyweds cozy up on the classic cable car they rented to take the wedding party to City Hall.

Having met as servers at the nowshuttered Hollywood nightspot Falcon in 2008, Eddie Glaeser and Jenna Baker began as friends. Four years later, he made a move: He invited her to meet him in Kauai where he was staying for work, then boldly sent a bag of his things, unprompted, to her hotel room. Another four years on, Eddie proposed on the balcony of the pair’s Paris hotel room at The Peninsula, the Eiffel Tower twinkling as a backdrop. “He’s a romantic guy when he wants to be!” says Jenna. Now the co-founders of Evolve Recovery,

an addiction rehabilitation consultancy, Beverly Hills-based Eddie and Jenna chose San Francisco City Hall as their wedding venue—a nod to Eddie’s Bay Area roots. The couple infused the event with classic romantic details befitting the beaux-arts landmark, including regal arrangements of roses, hydrangeas and dahlias; framed F. Dylan Wolff fondly refers to his court ship of Alex Basch as the “ultimate slow play.” The pair first met in 2003 as fresh men at Calabasas High School and imme diately hit it off, but it would be nearly a decade before romance took root. “We were really close friends and I always had a crush on her,” explains Wolff, “but I let it simmer for 10 years.” It wasn’t until they both returned home to Los Angeles in 2010 after graduating from college—she from George Washing ton University and he from the University of Oregon—that their friendship evolved into something more. Despite a joint agree ment to take the summer off with minimal responsibilities, Alex received a serendi pitous call from Andrea Lieberman, the founder of the thenfledgling label A.L.C., offering Alex a job as her assistant. “Alex had always planned to move to New York and do the fashion thing,” says Dylan. “When she got this opportunity in Los Angeles, it saved me!” Five years later, on a vacation in Tulum, Mexico, Dylan closed the deal, proposing amid candlelight and flowers—with a GoPro camera set to capture the scene. “It was so beautiful and all I could focus on was the camera,” recalls Alex, laughing. “I totally ruined the whole proposal tell ing him he couldn’t record me.” The couple decided on the Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs for their Octo ber nuptials, opting for a relaxed weekend getaway and exchanging vows in front of 135 close family and friends as the sun set over the San Jacinto Mountains. Dylan donned a Saint Laurent tux, and Alex, now the branding director for A.L.C., wore a doublefaced silk dress customdesigned by Lieberman.

A dinner including grilled flatbreads and pan-seared sea bass served at candlelit tables. The bride in her custom A.L.C. gown. Antique vintner bottles, citrus baskets and more than 200 lanterns transform the poolside setting. Opposite, from top: It was important to the bride to have both her mom and dad walk her down the aisle. The ceremony took place as the sun was setting over the San Jacinto Mountains.

“We called her from Tulum after we got engaged, and she was so excited to design the dress,” says Alex, who remembers Lieberman telling her, “You want to be you on your wedding day.” For Alex, a selfdescribed jeans-and-T-shirt girl, that meant a simple gown that focused on fabric and fit, including a beautiful low-back detail. The bride was just as adamant that her bridesmaids feel like themselves, a design task to which Lieberman enthusiastically lent her hand. “I don’t know if she knew what she was getting herself into, but she loves dressing people and dressing people for important events,” recalls Alex. “We looked at styles that we really loved, sketched them, and in some cases took A.L.C. favorites and allocated those.” The personalized assortment of dresses inspired A.L.C.’s first-ever bridal collection of effortlessly elegant frocks, aptly called The Dress, which launched in April. “The collection truly came out of the wedding,” says Alex. “The Dress stemmed from this idea of dressing women for all these special moments in their lives.” • PLANNER COJ Events FLORIST Mary Cass, Jensen’s Florist ENTERTAINMENT Dart Collective VIDEOGRAPHER Shark Pig, Wade Koch DRESS A.L.C. California The couple embarking on their PALM SPRINGS honeymoon from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Elvis and Priscilla Presley, 1967 Priscilla Beaulieu was only 14 years old when she fell under the spell of 24-year-old Elvis Presley at a party in Germany, where he was stationed with the Army (she was living nearby on a military base with her Air Force captain father). Nearly eight years later, on May 1, 1967, the world’s most eligible bachelor, then 32, wed the blue-eyed, beehive-haired 21-year-old Priscilla, having put a three-carat sparkler on her finger the previous December. After the 9 a.m. ceremony, held in a private suite at Las Vegas’ Aladdin Hotel (the groom clad in a black brocade silk tuxedo and Western boots; the bride donning a beaded chiffon gown of her own design, topped by a perky threefoot veil), and following the Champagne-fueled breakfast buffet, the

couple hopped on a plane to Palm Springs for their honeymoon. They holed up in a house Elvis was renting: the midcentury marvel known as “The House of Tomorrow,” built by legendary developer Robert Alexander and designed by the late, great architect William Krisel, whose penchant for butterfly roofs and postand-beam construction would become hallmarks of the region. The couple’s stay in the four-bedroom Alexander Estate, comprising three stories in four concentric circles and what is widely considered to be the most photographed pool in the valley, proved to be fruitful: The couple’s only child, daughter Lisa Marie, was born exactly nine months later, on Feb. 1, 1968. •
