FOUNDER’S LETTER

As a child, I used to play all sorts of make-believe games. One day, I would be a teacher—my stuffed animals, my students; another day, I would play store, creating a boutique in my basement. In my loftier moments, I would pretend to be in the fashion world and make mini-magazines full of sartorial sketches and how-to tips. That my childhood dreams have now become a reality of sorts is still beyond my wildest imagination. When C Magazine first launched more than 12 years ago, I only hoped it would become what it is today: a national-level publication about an important region (with the sixth-largest economy in the world), that is both relevant and sophisticated while celebrating all this state has to offer in fashion, design, beauty, culture and lifestyle. A lot of the world looks to California for cues. And, since we want to tell the whole story of our special state in different mediums, what better way to do it than to create a pop-up concept store that brings the pages of the magazine to life? With that as our mission, we present to you State of Mind: Curated by C Magazine—a name reflective of the fact that California is not only about geography, but is a way of thinking, too. With our boutique about to open in the recently renovated Westfield Century City (and our pop-up e-commerce site, C-StateofMind.com, debuting simultaneously), we have culled an unparalleled selection from some of the state’s most exciting designers, artisans and makers. Don’t miss the opportunity to shop our store in person or online for the perfect gift for everyone on your holiday list—including yourself. And, speaking of the holidays, this issue is our present to you. It’s full of the best fashion the season has to offer, from resort chic embodied by Jasmine Sanders (known to her legions of Instagram followers as @golden_barbie) poolside at the iconic Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club in Santa Barbara, to Oscar-nominated actor Carey Mulligan—pretty in pink in this season’s sweetest gowns (a nod to the upcoming red-carpet moments that are about to ensue). Our portfolio on celebrity photographer Michael Childers is a fun throwback to a Hollywood of another time. Seeing Tinseltown through a nostalgic lens is a fascinating way to take note of what once was, what we may have idolized and how it shaped our collective memories of pop culture. And riffing on nostalgia brings me back to those childhood games of make-believe in my family’s Michigan basement. That I do get to create a real magazine (not with my hand-drawn pictures but with an amazing worldclass team that puts their all into every issue!), and that I get to realize my game of shop in a full-fledged pop-up store, leaves me in a bit of disbelief. I guess the silly dreams of our youth sometimes can transcend into actual realities—and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Who’s who behind the scenes of this issue, plus their favorite California places

Michael Childers Jenny Cho “Assignments like those don’t happen very much any more in the film photography business. How fortunate I was,” says Michael Childers, whose career capturing Hollywood greats is chronicled in “Stars in His Eyes,” p.138. Childers has shot more than 200 magazine covers and received lifetime achievement awards from the Temecula Valley International Film Festival and the Provincetown Film Festival. C SPOTS • Hotel Cheval in Paso Robles is simply divine and elegant • Pappy & Harriet’s in Joshua Tree for blues bands and delicious ribs and corn bread • MOPA in San Diego for its stunning collection of photography

Before Jennifer Lawrence and Kirsten Dunst hit the red carpet, it’s a safe bet that Jenny Cho has perfected their tresses. Known for her flawless technique honed at the Sassoon Academy, the Los Angeles-based stylist’s editorial looks have appeared in glossies such as Schön and Harper’s Bazaar. Of working with cover star Carey Mulligan, Cho says, “It was a perfectly dreamy day.” C SPOTS • Cookbook on North Figueroa is my favorite neighborhood green grocery store • The Hunt Vintage is a gem in Highland Park • Highland Park Bowl is a restored bowling alley with amazing Italian food

C People 1

Sarah Khan “I always try to stay plugged into the latest hotel openings across the world, but reporting this story gave me some winter wanderlust,” says Sarah Khan, who has lived around the globe from Saudi Arabia to Canada. The award-winning travel writer, who has been published in The New York Times and Condé Nast Traveler, reports on the season’s newest getaways in “Escape Plans,” p.109. She currently enjoys exploring her new hometown, San Diego. C SPOTS • Balboa International Market for freshly baked sangak bread • I start my days with a run along Coronado Central Beach • Logan Avenue’s Por Vida café to break out of the work-from-home slump

“Carey Mulligan is a massive fan of the ABC series Designated Survivor,” says Mickey Rapkin, who penned “Daydream Believer,” p.146. “This is far from my expectations of what she might be watching—and it delights me.” L.A.-based Rapkin, former GQ senior editor, has written for publications spanning The New York Times to Elle. His book Pitch Perfect inspired the film franchise of the same name. C SPOTS • Wittmore in the Arts District for brands I never knew about, but now covet • Chef Zach Pollack’s Cosa Buona in Echo Park. Order the chopped salad, Broccolini and pepperoni pizza • Skylight Books in Los Feliz is the only place I buy books

Joan Behnke “The uniqueness of the space was both a design challenge and opportunity to think outside the box,” says Joan Behnke, who dreamed up interiors for “Taste Makers,” p.154. With her design firm based in Beverly Hills, Behnke is responsible for projects such as Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen’s Brentwood estate. C SPOTS • Loqui at the Platform in Culver City for a quick weekend taco • Echo Park Craft Fair for gifts • Chariots on Fire on Abbot Kinney for beautifully crafted hardware from Denmark

C TURNS THE PAGE WITH A HYPER-LOCAL CONCEPT SHOP “The idea of a shopping experience where customers know that everything in the store is going to be something they like—that is really appealing,” says L.A.-based interior designer Martha Mulholland. “A little bit of everything, tailored, in one place.” And so Mulholland signed on to conceptualize the interiors for C’s debut pop-up shop, State of Mind: Curated by C Magazine, a five-week retail experience at Westfield Century City, stocked with products hand-selected by our editors to represent the high mark of

California style. Given that lens, it was only fitting that the shop be furnished according to the same standards. Replete in a rich palette of warm, minimal materials, the decor derives from a pool of California talent, and includes pieces by Atelier de Troupe, De Jong & Co., Ten10 and Carly Jo Morgan. Exclusives such as a strapless tulle Monique Lhuillier gown, a trio of Nick Fouquet hats and customized Greg Lauren jackets are showcased in an immersive, residential scheme, an

approach Mulholland has helped push to the forefront in such projects as The Line (and a new Venice studio for Marysia in “Sea Change,” p.52), making a case for browsing in person as an event in and of itself. We still appreciate the gratifying rush of online shopping, too—hence the store’s companion e-commerce site. After all, living in California means having the best of all worlds. WHAT’S HOT Studio Visit

SEA Change

Clockwise from left: FABRICIUS & KASTHOLM FOR HARVEY PROBBER wicker bucket chairs pull up to a BLU DOT worktable in the studio. A vintage pendant from DEKOR & CO. hangs upstairs where a daybed and a surfboard add a feeling of home. Floating shelves are lined with pens, curios and photos.

Marysia Dobrzanska Reeves’ sun-kissed skin and tresses hint at a life spent shoreside, so it’s not surprising to find her behind a desk in Venice, designing the scalloped bathing suits and diaphanous smock dresses of her line, Marysia, inside a splitlevel studio bathed in natural light. Yet the path that led Dobrzanska Reeves

WH - studio from a childhood in Poland to a 2,000square-foot perch just behind Abbot Kinney has been anything but predictable. Early ballet classes in Europe and teen years spent lifeguarding in Delaware inspired Dobrzanska Reeves—who studied at Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising—to launch a neutral-hued swim collection that is delicate and pretty, yet also body conscious. She got her start while living in Charleston, S.C.: “For swimwear, you only need one type of fabric to make a collection,” she points out. Next, a loft in New York’s Little Italy served as the line’s headquarters and home for Dobrzanska Reeves and her husband (the brand’s chief financial officer), Nathaniel, before their second daughter’s bout with pneumonia brought the family out West in

search of “clean air and the sea breeze.” The eight-year-old company’s latest collection, hanging in Dobrzanska Reeves’ Venice studio, completes Marysia’s progression from a swimwear line to a resortwear label. The offices—dreamed up with interior designer Martha Mulholland—evoke the elements of sand and surf without being literal. A rack of filmy jumpsuits covered in delicate Swiss dots have a distinctly European sensibility, and polka-dotted bathing suits nod to the leotards of the designer’s youth. The showroom floor’s scallop-edged woven rattan rugs from Barcelona mirror the curves of the brand’s suits. Mulholland says Dobrzanska Reeves’ keen design eye, even for office supplies, makes the workspace feel creative: “Every pin on every board has a pretty white knob.” marysia.com. • ELIZABETH VARNELL

Known for translating old-world vino to their modern brand of fine Napa wines, the Castellucci family is delving further into hospitality with The Ink House, sited in a former bed-and-breakfast in St. Helena, built in 1885 on the historic Helios Ranch property. Its four bedrooms have been updated for the ultimate wine country experience, complete with personal maître d’étage services and access to a chauffeured Bentley for excursions. “We have taken those intangible feelings of luxury that excite the senses to create a completely custom, curated experience based on each guest’s desires and expectations, with a touch of our own Italian hospitality,” says proprietor Maria Castellucci. SPRING/SUMMER 2018’S OVERARCHING TREND? A STAR-MAKING TURN BY CALIFORNIA ROYALTY In any roundup of the Spring/Summer 2018 collections, the most consistent factor was certainly the recurring runway appearances of California native Kaia Gerber. Just days after her 16th birthday,

the Malibu-based model made her catwalk debut walking for Raf Simons’ Calvin Klein show, and went on to dominate the runways in New York, London, Milan and Paris, opening Chanel, Alexander Wang

and Fendi, and closing out Marc Jacobs. More than flawless genetics inherited from parents Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, her youthful confidence put the world on notice: This is only the beginning… •

The collection, a result of cutting-edge laboratory technology and natural healing elements, is composed of eight products. The entire line is infused with M.T.Parca Thermal Water, a balanced, mineral-rich blend of four distinct thermal waters from Montecatini, Italy, that promote radiance, vitality and clarity. “My two favorite obsessions are MDNA Skin Rose Spray Mist…and rose-flavored gummy bears,” the Queen of Pop recently revealed on Instagram. Rising Signs For its 20th anniversary, L.A.-based design industry favorite Exquisite Surfaces—known for its reclaimed wood and stone—is collaborating with 20 leading creatives in the field for the E/S20 Collection: a line of unique cement tile designs by the likes of Jamie Bush, Paul Fortune and Lisa Eisner, that launched in November. A portion of sales are dedicated to the company’s Choose to Reuse sustainability efforts. xsurfaces.com.

Necessity, the mother of invention, led Venicebased David McAuliffe to launch Milwood Design this fall. With a 30-year career comprising stints as an artist and a gallerist (he is the founder of the former Angles Gallery, an early dealer of Donald Judd’s influential minimalist furniture), McAuliffe couldn’t find a suitably compatible stool for his midcentury kitchen table, so he made his own. Next came designs for an elegant bench and a side table. “I wanted to start off with basic elements and add,” he explains of the numbered, limited-edition pieces topped in Danish cord and leather. “It’s about proportion and being handmade—much like a sculpture,” he says. GREEN PARTY A CROP OF INDOOR PLANT LIFE THAT SHINES LONG AFTER THE HOLIDAYS

Molly Wood creates fun, palette-driven looks for her clients from her Costa Mesa studio and showroom and Laguna Beach shop. “Focus your efforts in a few spots around your home,” says Wood. This winter, she loves lemon cypress cones and topiaries for their “quirky, colorful vibe.” And succulents, of course: “We sell them in a crisp white or rich gold container with a little cluster of shiny spheres that can be removed after the holidays.” 1290 N. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, 949-715-8143; mollywoodgardendesign.com. TRACY GLOVER terrariums are available in three sizes, $725-$800.

Lighting designer Tracy Glover’s recently launched hanging terrariums are crafted from handblown glass and antique brass hardware. Just add plants.

“I consider flowers and foliage like raw media,” says Freya Prowe, floral designer and owner of Oakland’s Brother & Sisters Flower Shop. “You need to allow them to speak.” With a background in fine arts, Prowe considers a plant’s home as important as its vessel. For artful winter looks, she recommends a Norfolk Island pine. “It feels festive but is actually a tropical plant, so it will thrive all year indoors.” 3265 Grand Ave., Oakland, 510-899-9574; brotherandsistersflowers.com.

In addition to their arrangement bar (DIY plantscaping!), Rolling Greens offers snow globe terrarium- and wreath-making holiday workshops at its Beverly Boulevard location. While there, visit the pop-up for the fashion label The Great, co-founded by Emily Current and Meritt Elliott. “We wanted our customers to experience our collection while being surrounded by gorgeous holiday decor and greenery,” says Current. “So collaborating with Rolling Greens made perfect sense,” adds Elliott. 7505 Beverly Blvd., L.A., 323-934-4500; rollinggreensnursery.com.

Hudson Grace’s newest shop, HG Garden in Marin Country Mart, sells tools, vintage planters and a curated mix of plants and flowers. Says Gary McNatton, co-founder with Monelle Totah, “ ‘Living green’ is both nourishing to the eyes and the soul.” The pair’s favorites include cut balsam fir. “It brings the best of winter into the home,” says McNatton. They also like boxwood spheres, burlapwrapped mini trees and amaryllis and paperwhites. “Forcing bulbs brings color and scent during the winter months,” he says. 2403 Larkspur Landing Cir., Larkspur, 415-459-7400; hudsongracesf.com.

Ask any sommelier about the best bottle he or she has ever had, and the answer is usually the same: It isn’t the wine that stands out but the moments surrounding it. Such is the ethos behind Clos19, the LVMH-backed wine and spirits e-commerce site (that has finally launched stateside) with a focus on “the art of hosting.” The brainchild of Stephanie Watine Arnault, niece of LVMH chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault, Clos19 does much more than ship bottles of Krug Vintage 2004 bubbly and Château Cheval Blanc 2012. Well, think again: There’s a reason the luxe Rosewood brand chose the city’s beguiling Emerald Bay as the site of its first Southeast Asian property. The plush Rosewood Phuket feels a world away from the island’s party vibe, with 71 pool pavilions and villas and an all-encompassing Asaya wellness platform. A two-bedroom ocean-view pavilion at ROSEWOOD PHUKET.

A celebrated hospitality icon is reborn this December when the One&Only Le Saint Géran unveils its eagerly anticipated renovation. We aren’t talking about minor cosmetic nips and tucks, either; the 42-year-old grande dame shuttered its hallowed doors for nearly a year, and the result is worth the wait. The earthy, refreshed rooms are clad in timber, leather, linen and stone, and livened up with turquoise accents inspired by the ocean—which, thanks to the resort’s prime peninsula perch, is still the main event. South Africa If you’ve recently taken to fantasizing about booking a flight to Cape Town, the glossy new Silo Hotel probably has something to do with it. Opened in March atop the city’s red-hot new Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the Silo was the continent’s buzziest hotel debut—and as Cape Town heads into its peak summer season, it’ll be easier to score tickets to Hamilton on Broadway than one of those 28 coveted keys. CARAVAGGIO’s Boy with a Basket of Fruit, circa 1593-1594. Oil on canvas.

Italian Import Caravaggio, the erratic, tortured Italian artist of the 1600s, is known for painting some of the most divine masterpieces of his time—naturalist paintings of dramatic, violent and often religious events, emblazoned with deep shadows and a stark degree of realism.

Now, thanks to the classically Roman fashion brand, Fendi, an opportunity to experience the fervor of his works comes to Los Angeles. The company has engaged in a three-year partnership with the epic Roman museum Galleria Borghese, which has housed many Caravaggios since Cardinal

Scipione Borghese first started collecting them in the early 1600s. Boy with a Basket of Fruit, Saint Jerome and David with the Head of Goliath, embark on a global tour beginning at the J. Paul Getty Museum and ending in the Far East. The partnership also includes the launch of

Mystery Man “A documentary has to obey only one rule: to search for truth,” declares filmmaker Errol Morris, whose multifaceted features have won a smorgasbord of awards, including an Oscar for The Fog of War, Grand Jury Prize at Sundance for A Brief History of Time and the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for The Thin Blue Line. Now the University of California, Berkeley alum and San Francisco Pacific Film Archive associate turns his lens on the CIA (and, in doing so, hits the conspiracy theory mother lode) with a look at Frank Olson, the mild-mannered scientist (played in reenactments by Peter Sarsgaard), who, depending on what you believe, either jumped or fell from a 13th-floor hotel window in New York City in 1953. Instead of a straight documentary or feature film exclusively focused on the bacteriologist and chemical warfare specialist’s mysterious death, Wormwood

collages together a hybrid narrative: Interviews with Olson’s son (who has spent the last 60 years seeking answers) are patched together with immersive retellings of the last days of the scientist’s life, alongside interviews with the major still-living players. The film raises questions about why Olson was given LSD nine days before his death, and delves into the workings of the CIA’s MKUltra project (also called the CIA mind-control program), in which humans were experimented on to develop mind control and torture techniques, and gather information for U.S. biological attacks. “Wormwood is about America, from the beginning of the Cold War in the ’50s to the present time. It’s a story of government cover-ups, conspiracies—in short, systemic government lying,” Morris says. “I’ll leave it to you, the audience, to decide how this might relate to the present.” Streaming Dec. 15; netflix.com.

“I HAD TO BE IN LOVE WITH THE SUBJECT—OR IN LIKE WITH THE SUBJECT.”

Feature - childers You may not have realized it, but for decades you’ve been seeing the legends of Hollywood through photographer Michael Childers’ eyes. While a student of film and photography at UCLA, Childers’ multimedia work captured the attention of theater critic and writer Kenneth Tynan, who showcased the up-andcomer’s work in the 1969 production of Oh! Calcutta! Later, during his role as literary manager for the U.K.’s National Theatre company, Tynan offered Childers stints shooting stage legends including Laurence Oliver in London and New York. Soon Hollywood beckoned: Childers emerged as one of the premier portrait and film-set photographers of his generation, a modern-day George Hurrell (who was a mentor) helping define celebrity iconography of the latter half of the 20th century, initially as founding photographer for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine and later for fabled media outlets including GQ, New York, TV Guide, Esquire, Elle and Paris Match.

Childers, 73, recently donated around 1,000 film-related images in his archive to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which assembled a significant exhibit, “Michael Childers: Starstruck—A Life Behind the Lens,” in his honor, on display at the AMPAS’s Margaret Herrick Library in Beverly Hills beginning in January 2018. “I

We stayed at [Hotel] Cipriani and I photographed one of the greatest weeks of my life. They were just wonderful, and the pictures turned out really enchanting.” Despite film sets being notoriously monotonous between takes, Childers—whose longtime partner was Midnight Cowboy filmmaker John Schlesinger—found excitement there, too. “Filming is ‘hurry up and wait,’ ” he admits. “Hanging out in dressing room trailers with Sissy Spacek and Beverly D’Angelo waiting for hours for the lighting to get right—that part was delightful.” Even today, Childers has a few subjects he’d love just one more session with: “Michelle Pfeiffer—not only was she astonishingly beautiful, but she was so much fun to work with, so bright and smart. Probably my favorite male star was John Travolta—the early magic of Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Urban Cowboy. His penchant for research and preparedness, as well as always engaging top styling and costuming pros, helped cement his reputation as much as his eye for a stunning shot. “I enjoyed working with actresses in particular,” he says, having photographed the likes of Cher, Bette Midler, Kathleen Turner and Anjelica Huston. “I’ve photographed some of the male stars of the time—I did well with Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Richard Gere and Mel Gibson—but I think it’s easier for a gay photographer working with extraordinary strong and beautiful women, with great clothes and jewelry and makeup and hair. Men still have the macho thing, the vanity. A few months after giving birth to her second child, Carey Mulligan calls from London to talk about—well, what are we talking about? It’s late at night and her child is stirring and she’s lost her train of thought and suddenly she’s telling me I should watch Designated Survivor. The TV show, I say? “Yes,” she says. “Where everyone gets killed and suddenly Kiefer Sutherland is the president. It’s amazing.” This is not the first or last surprising tangent she’ll take in a wide-ranging and often very funny conversation in which she reveals she is wary of so-called “important” Oscar films, praises pro wrestler John Cena’s work in the comedy Trainwreck, and swears by clothing from The Row. When asked what her next film gets right about marriage, she says, jokingly: “Whew… struggle. The struggle is real.” It’s exactly the kind of thing you’d expect any parent with two tiny kids to say. And, for the record, Mulligan and her husband, Marcus Mumford, the lead singer of the wildly successful band Mumford & Sons, seem very happily married. It’s just that Mulligan has spent the last decade keeping the public at arm’s length, so even the tiniest hint of her home life feels like a revelation. Mulligan, you’ll remember, scored an Oscar nomination in 2010 for An Education, her first true leading film role, in which she played a 1960s London schoolgirl who gets mixed up with a charismatic con man. She was a Sundance “it” girl and has continued to deliver on that promise, doing thrilling, gorgeous work opposite Michael Fassbender in the portrait of a sex addict in Shame (2011), and Oscar Isaac in the 2013

music-driven Inside Llewyn Davis while somehow living part time on a farm in the English countryside, where she reportedly raises piglets. At least that’s the rumor. She maintains zero social media presence, having sworn off even her private Instagram after some presumably personal photos started showing up online, though she’s still lurking. “I don’t comment, I don’t ‘like’ photos. But I spy on people. Otherwise you don’t see people’s children growing up anymore. That’s kind of all I want to see is, like, babies.” Mulligan, 32, may not be chronicling her daily life publicly, but she’s definitely been thinking about the ride. Next year’s indie film Wildlife, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal, is partly about infidelity, and the project spoke to her in surprising ways. “[The film] is less about their marriage and more about that moment in her life, that feeling of inertia. Like, she’s suddenly woken up in her 30s with a 14-year-old son and this marriage, and she can’t get a hold of where her life has gone.” She clarifies, speaking personally: “I’m very, very lucky. But I do sometimes go, ‘How am I 32 and I have two children and I’m married and I have a house?’” Mulligan’s life has been peripatetic from the start. Her father was a hotel manager and she spent much of her childhood in Dusseldorf, Germany, living out of hotels like some European answer to Eloise. At age 8, her family returned to England but Mulligan didn’t live in a proper home until she was a teenager. That rootless, adventurous start perhaps contributed to her skill as a chameleon; she is a great interpreter of the latent desires of human beings, and she was as raw interpreting Anton Chekhov on Broadway as she was dazzling in Baz Luhrmann’s kaleidoscope of decadence, The Great Gatsby—in 3-D! When she received the script for November’s Mudbound, which is in theaters and on Netflix—and may bring Mulligan and the streaming giant to the Oscar party—she was traveling in South Africa. The project, based on Hillary Jordan’s 2008 novel, tells the story of two families in rural Mississippi struggling to survive post-World War II in the South, and it tackles subjects like post-traumatic stress disorder, racism and women’s rights with an unflinching lens. It was also the exact opposite of what Mulligan hoped to do next. She was tired of period pieces, tired of corsets, and

desperate to do something contemporary, once joking: “I wanted to hold a gun.” What changed her mind—what made her willing to relocate to New Orleans at the height of a steamy-hot summer with an 8-month-old baby in tow—was simply the chance to work with Dee Rees, a female director she’d admired out of Sundance, with a strong cinematic vision and a downand-dirty shooting style. On Mudbound, the actors would have small, shared trailers that were miles away from set and mostly went unused as they sizzled in the blazing sun beset by mosquitoes. “We couldn’t retreat and go off into our own worlds and check our phones,” the actress says. “We were on this mad adventure. I’ve never been on a film where a snake wrangler was required to stop us from getting bitten. I like the pace of that filmmaking. I can’t bear sitting around and waiting.” Mudbound unfurls over an epic canvas, but what Mulligan does so well is instill humanity in the smallest moments. She stars as Laura, a city-bred woman, still living with her parents at age 31, who is whisked off to a rundown farm by her new husband (Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke). Laura is a woman who desperately wants to be seen and appreciated—and, yes, touched. The ensemble film tackles big ideas, but, whatever you do, Mulligan says, please don’t call it important. “Important implies that it’s really dull,” she says. “It’s entertaining.” It’s been nearly 10 years since Mulligan’s career-making debut at Sundance. Reflecting on that period of her life, she now says: “I had a constant insecurity about being in the public eye, which was really time consuming. I was so worried about what people would think of what dress I wore and blah blah blah. And now I just don’t really care.” That fearlessness will be on full display next year when she returns to the London stage. She has signed on to appear in Boys & Girls—a daunting 90-minute monologue— debuting in February. “It’s a one-woman show, so I’m obviously insane,” she says. “But I just couldn’t bear the idea of anyone else doing it. The writing is superb.” She thinks on this moment another beat, acknowledging she has yet to sort out the logistics of child care or consider her own stamina. The decision came down to the work. “If you’re not scared,” she says, “there’s literally no point in doing it.” •

When Ann Colgin and Joe Wender, the husband-and-wife vintners behind St. Helena’s Colgin Cellars, bought connected penthouses on Santa Monica’s Ocean Avenue three years ago, they were seduced by the residence’s stylistic freedom and turnkey potential—not to mention its easy access to authentic house-made pasta. “We wanted a situation where we could come and go,” says Colgin. “The building is contemporary, the lifestyle is casual and we can walk to one of our favorite restaurants, Capo.” The couple (who met in 1997 at Spago in Beverly Hills, at a dinner honoring the late French vintner Henri Jayer) lives primarily in Napa, in a Victorian-style country house whose traditional interiors pay homage to the property’s original owner, Josephine Tychson, the first woman to build and operate a winery in California. The magnitude of the achievement is not lost on Colgin, who singlehandedly founded Colgin Cellars in 1992—joining a group of influential purveyors creating handcrafted small-production wines. With no historical strings attached, the

Designer Joan Behnke, who previously collaborated with the couple on a Malibu residence and a Napa guesthouse, set out to integrate their artworks into a 6,500-square-foot design that also had to function as a venue for entertaining—something for which Colgin and Wender, a senior adviser to Goldman Sachs, are known. “We wanted to create a sculptural space that unfolded for their guests,” Behnke says. “And it had to marry city and beach,” adds Meghan Alyssa Eisenberg, a senior designer at Behnke’s firm. Providence chef Michael Cimarusti’s Dock to Dish program. The “epicenter of what Eataly is about,” Batali says, is La Piazza, an area that mimics a town square. Here you will find Rossopomodoro’s Neapolitan pizza baked in gold-tiled ovens; lightly sauced, handmade pasta made with Italian flour; and only-in-L.A. offerings such as olive oil in bulk, White Moustache yogurt made in-house, and panigacci, an Italian snack made with thin, crisp bread cooked on hot terra-cotta plates and topped with olive oil, fluffy mortadella or charcuterie, or even filled with Venchi chocolate spread. Cimarusti along with Donato Poto is also running Il Pesce, a seafood restaurant featuring crudo and grilled fish, while Jason Neroni of the Rose Cafe in Venice is managing the salad bar (Neal Fraser and Walter Manzke will do the honors next). For the first time, Eataly’s 1,200-bottle wine shop carries California wines alongside Italy’s bright arneis and aged Barolos. On the lower level, chef Lidia Bastianich—also a partner, with her son restaurateur Joe Bastianich—runs a cooking school that will cover the full range of Italian gastronomy. A restaurant called Terra will open on the top floor next year. When Oscar Farinetti created the first Eataly in Turin 10 years ago, he revolutionized the old-fashioned food hall by making grocery shopping a kind of entertainment. Here in L.A., with a cast of celebrity chefs and a huge opening weekend, it looks like Farinetti has another blockbuster on his hands. 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., 213-310-8000; eataly.com. • MICHALENE BUSICO

the will and the discipline.’ ” As Schwarzenegger’s star status grew, he would tap Childers to shoot him on early blockbusters like Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. “I have nothing but the fondest memories of working with Arnold.” Occasionally, he was neither in love nor much in like with the object of his lens, but remains discreet. “I’ve photographed probably 2,000 actors. Ninety-nine percent were wonderful. But there’s always a couple. I don’t want to diss anybody,” he says with a laugh. “There were a couple of explosive diva women I did not enjoy working with, and a couple of big male movie stars who were impossible. I like working with wonderful, creative and collaborative [talent]. So the best sessions I had were a collaboration: They brought costumes; they had ideas.” •

by established and of-the-moment talents: In the living room, Untitled C in Grapes, a custom acrylic painting by Ed Ruscha, hangs above a pair of slipper chairs set with pillows upholstered in metallic-woven Toyine upholstery hand-selected to complement the piece; a bespoke curved ivory sofa works as an oversized parenthetical to hug the voluminous space, and Philip Nimmo’s bold Caldo fire screen adds a witty focal punch. Big Bang Series (in Ten Steps), an arc of concrete and marble slabs by artist Analia Saban, encircles a grand piano in the entry gallery like a looming Greek chorus, and, across the patio in the dining room, painter Mary Weatherford’s riot of brushstrokes, Love Forever (Cave), and Mary Corse’s ambient light and space piece, Untitled, offsets a formal antique Italian table set with custom suede-upholstered Baxter chairs. The setup can be rearranged to accommodate up to 40 guests, who dine under a monumental chandelier by Lindsey Adelman that almost spans the length of the room. Visible from the dining room is the wine cellar—a feat of engineering, with a brass Piet Mondrian-styled showpiece window, which houses 1,200 bottles. “It’s what we want to drink now,” Colgin says of the inventory, explaining that vintages that require more aging have no place in this setting. It drives home the point of the space: “We have fun here,” she says simply. “We have great fun.” •

LARSEN THOMPSON “Dancing has opened up so many doors for me,” says Larsen Thompson, who regularly performs alongside superstars such as Katy Perry, Pink and Sia. The Southern California native began training at the age of 4 at the Academy of Dance Westlake Village, across categories spanning ballet to hip-hop, and gained national attention in 2015 after a YouTube video of her dancing to Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls)” went viral. “I woke up and it had a million views. I was like, ‘That is just insanity.’” The exposure catapulted Thompson, then an aspiring model, into the spotlight, leading to campaigns for Fendi and Dior. “I’m obsessed with fashion,” the 18-year-old says. “I really want to walk the runways. I feel like the modeling world is changing so much—height doesn’t matter anymore. I’m not the average 5’11” and I look up to Kate Moss because she is 5’7” and was able to walk for everyone.” Thompson cites her aunt, Julianne McNamara, who competed at the 1984 Olympics in gymnastics, as a role model, both for her work ethic and her down-to-earth take on celebrity. “My aunt left home at 12 years old to train for the Olympics. And she was the first woman to ever get a gold medal on the bars for the USA—she made history,” she says. “Having her around…I wasn’t as shocked to be in this world now. She taught me that celebrities are just people—they’re just like me.” • LINDZI SCHARF
