Founder’s Letter
Eyes lock. You meet. Hearts ping. Love blossoms. Memories are made. And the idea of living without that person becomes unthinkable. Proposals are planned, rings presented, celebrations plotted. The who we leave to you. The how is where we come in. From the dress (or dresses, as the case may be—see bride Katherine Bardis, who swapped her romantic, lace-embellished Carolina Herrera ceremony gown for a made-to-order Gucci number for the reception) to the backdrop (which in this issue spans small-town Maine to the iconic Gesner Beach House in Malibu), we cover every last aspect of the big day. We also tackle the details that bookend your big day, mastering the sometimes-overwhelming art of the registry and exploring one of the most romantic honeymoon destinations in the world: Italy, from its under-the-radar corners to its perennial draw, Lake Como. Of course, who better to provide inspiration than the pros? We spotlight the nuptials of lifestyle blogger Anne Sage, event planner Maggie Wilson, celebrity stylist Jill Lincoln and chef Melissa Perello to see the ways they translated their life’s work to their own momentous occasions. As varied and distinct as their celebrations are, they each adhere to the same tenet: to make the experience as personal a reflection of themselves and their significant others as possible. Which leads us to the best event-planning advice we can offer: In the end, the most memorable weddings are not those that conform to one fairy-tale formula, but the ones that honor the things particular to the couple’s one-of-akind union—after all, it’s those things that got you to this point in the first place.

All That Jazz
Considering trumpeter, vocalist and bandleader Chris Norton is among the most in-demand performers in the industry—thanks to his brand of raw talent-backed, bygone-era showmanship—one might expect that his proposal to his fiancée, French fashion blogger and artist Garance Doré, would be flawless. “Maybe it was charming because it was so not charming?” he suggests with a selfdeprecating laugh, of popping the question during the Venice Beach-based couple’s vacation to Mexico two years ago. “I’d been holding onto the ring for two months and I was a mess. I could not keep my cool. I ran to my suitcase like a kid and grabbed the ring and mumbled, ‘Will you marry me?’ I didn’t have a flash mob or a string quartet.” He’s decidedly more strategic at work, be it leading his namesake ensemble at high-profile events, such as Chopard’s 2016 Cannes Film Festival party or multiple Whitney Galas; playing jazz standards mixed with pop for heads of state including former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton (the latter of whom joined him for a duet); or performing at weddings for the likes of Albert Gore III and his bride, Brittany Toscano. “Sometimes I’ll start with a ballad, say, ‘Let’s Get It On,’ because couples are more apt to dance to something where they get to be alone in a room together,” he reveals of but one of his magic formulas. “If I can get a large percentage of the room up on a slow song, then the song after that—that next song is the most important of the night.” He adds, “It’ll be a little bit faster, but they’ll still be able to hold each other.” mrchrisnorton.com. • MELISSA GOLDSTEIN

EVENT PRODUCER MAGGIE WILSON AND TIM MARVIN FETE THEIR NUPTIALS IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Every year, Maggie Wilson and Tim Marvin organize a big camping party in the woods for Maggie’s birthday. “Some of our favorite memories are from those weekends. Tim and I fell in love taking those trips,” recalls Maggie, who happens to be the creative director of Shelter Co., an event planning and luxury tent rental company. (Tim is a campaign manager for Consumers Union.) Hoping to re-create one of those magical weekends for their wedding, the couple, who met on OkCupid and resides in the East Bay, found a sprawling hotel compound in Guerneville called Dawn Ranch that emanated a nostalgic, Dirty Dancing vibe.
Despite her work as an event producer, Maggie took a decidedly low-key approach to designing her own wedding day: She asked her bridesmaids to select their own dresses; decor and florals were natural and understated; Maggie even insisted the farm tables not be perfectly lined up for dinner. “I wanted it to feel like the whole setup was just always there, like an old camp or family property,” she says. On a balmy, 104-degree day, Maggie walked down the aisle—which was adorned with potted ferns and Oriental rugs that belonged to her grandmother— in an ethereal custom shirtdress created by her aunt, designer Susan Sutherland of
From top left: Maggie let her bridesmaids choose their own looks. An alfresco family-style dinner in the orchard. After the ceremony (officiated by Tim’s mothers), cocktails were held under a majestic sailcloth tent (the site of dancing, later on in the night, as well as the display of the gluten-free orange wedding cake) that was surrounded by smaller Shelter Co. lounge tents. With cocktails in hand, guests made their way to a nearby apple orchard for dinner, flanked by more Shelter Co. sleeping tents, where friends bunked for the weekend. A late-night bonfire with caramel corn from Paula LeDuc, whiskey and a soundtrack of old-school ’90s rap eventually led to a group skinny-dip in the pool. When some venue management came to investigate, the couple hightailed it back to their cabin under a blanket. Says Maggie, “I wouldn’t have changed a thing!” • KELSEY M C KINNON SPRING WEDDINGS 2018

SOMETHING SUBTLE Rachel Zoe is adding a new twist to the Old English wedding day rhyme. In addition to assembling a look that incorporates old, new, borrowed and blue elements, the Los Angeles-based designer and editor advocates a touch of subtlety to lighten the spirit of the monumental day with her bridal capsule collection, which debuted in September. When Zoe discovered that women have been slipping into dresses from her past ready-to-wear collections for their weddings, she decided to make a line of effortlessly glamorous pieces for every kind of bride. “I’ve included white in every season…probably with the subconscious intention to dress

Lofty Ideals
Design
After relocating from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 2012, design and style blogger Anne Sage (annesage.com) reconnected with her distant friend Ivan Juarez-Mrazek, an analytical marketer. Two years after their first official date, he got down on one knee for a modest, casual proposal at their Highland Park home. “He said, ‘What I’ve learned from you is that it matters less what something looks like and more the thought and intention behind it,’” Anne recalls. With that philosophy as a thread, Anne began organizing their nuptials— her second trip down the aisle, and

one she imagined being an intimate affair. Plans changed, however, when photographer Elizabeth Messina rang her, insisting that she capture the big day. So, Anne shifted gears and enlisted San Franciscobased event designer Jesi Haack along with several other California creatives from her circle, including floral studio JL Designs, stationer Alissa Bell and calligrapher Nicole Miyuki—to help realize a grander vision. Inspired by the Coqui Coqui spa resorts of the Yucatán—a nod to Ivan’s Mexican heritage—Anne envisioned a setting that evoked “Old World indulgence meets the jungle,” she says. Downtown L.A.’s Hudson Loft was the perfect blank canvas. The industrial, multi-room venue’s graphic architecture—warehouse windows, brick walls, concrete floors— was contrasted with soft blush and gray drapery, wild foliage and crisp white blooms, while handwritten excerpts from Pablo Neruda’s Spanish love poems dotted the gold-accented tablescapes. “It’s so easy to go crazy with adding stuff and diluting the vision,” reflects Anne. “For me, the secret is to set an original vision, and then put it into the hands of people who know better than you what to do.” • ANUSH BENLIYAN

Made With Love
Chef Melissa Perello unexpectedly discovered romance at her own San Francisco restaurant, Frances, when she and Robert Wright, director of operations, fell in love as they worked alongside each other. Here, Perello walks us through the couple’s big day. Two years into opening our second restaurant, Octavia, after Robert and I had been engaged for almost three years, we finally found some normalcy
in our lives and decided it was time to start planning our wedding. The Mendocino Coast has always been our getaway whenever we feel like we need to check out of “city life,” so we chose Cuffey’s Cove Ranch, with its acres of meadows and forests, as our location. I grew up camping, and it’s always been something we enjoyed doing together, so I called on Shelter Co., which

produces glamping-style events. The food was important to us, because it was the perfect opportunity to show all our friends and family just how proud we are of our two restaurants and our teams. The September event date meant we could rely on the Indian summer to hang on to most of the summer produce as the season transitioned. Our friend Erin Cochran—whose Crow and Oak Farm grew a good chunk of

Menu the produce for our wedding—helped orchestrate the catering for the weekend. One of my best friends, Rebekah Northway, florist for both of our restaurants, produced the florals and the driftwood altar that framed our ceremony at the top of the bluff, while our friends at Elsie Green helped design the tablescape, set with custom plates by our friend Sarah Kersten, who embellished each piece with our wedding logo on the bottom, as a party favor for guests. Our kitchen teams from both Frances and Octavia collaborated on the family-style meal, including smoked potato salad served with filet bean, sungold tomato, Meyer lemon and summer herbs; grilled pork belly with baby bok choy and sesame; and Don Watson’s lamb, coalroasted with three sauces. The decadent cakes, made by our pastry chef, Sarah Bonar, were just stunning and delicious to boot, including my favorite: a spiced hazelnut cake with honey, latesummer berries and mission figs. There was no shortage of libations: Claire Sprouse from Lo-Fi Aperitifs brought Nicolas Torres, the bar director at Lazy Bear and True Laurel in San Francisco, with her to create postdinner cocktails, such as the

Mendocino Manhattan, featuring stonefruit-infused bourbon, sweet vermouth, dried orange and cinnamon. And thanks to our sommelier, Josh Thomas, there was an amazing selection of wines flowing freely for the entire weekend, with an endless supply of my favorite prosecco, Le Vigne di Alice Doro Nature. The day went by quickly, and before we knew it we were snuggled up next to a fire and enjoying the moonlight. I was so tired I fell asleep in my wedding dress (along with my Patagonia down jacket). When I woke early in the morning, I snuck up the hill to the ceremony structure to catch the sunrise. I wanted to enjoy the fleeting moments we had left at this amazing location. The beautiful view, our friends and family all here to share this celebration with us—I wanted to soak in the beauty for a few last peaceful moments before it all was just a memory. •

A subtle suggestion from the mother of the bride set everything in motion. “She thought we should have the wedding somewhere where we have family roots,” says Net-aPorter stylist-turned-freelance creative director Monica Wade, whose mother inspired her to decamp to New Mexico with her beau, Dan Oh, a former DJ who is now managing his family’s L.A.-based logistics company, to exchange vows. Suddenly, the idea of an open-air Santa Fe wedding seemed ideal. After all, Monica grew up visiting the area where her entrepreneurial sister now owns a nearby farm, a bistro named Vinaigrette and a modern general store, and where her parents also have a second home. Often, the couple, who met in New York through mutual friends just before Dan moved back to Los Angeles, reunited in New Mexico—their rendezvous point of choice during two years of long-distance dating. Monica and her planner, Beth Helmstetter, settled on La Mesita Ranch, just minutes from her parents’ property, and her sister, Erin, created a menu incorporating handeddown family recipes for the gathering. Low benches at the ceremony gave guests a view of the majestic foothills and mountains surrounding the couple, and rose gold on invitations and silverware—and embedded in the marble dance floor—picked up the vibrant pinks of New Mexico sunsets. As the evening set in, Helmstetter used bright flowers, a neon sign, tinsel and 16 disco balls to lure guests onto the dance floor. An oxygen lounge helped to combat the thin air at 7,000 feet. The party continued beyond 3 a.m., and Monica says her friends were smitten with the location: “They keep asking, ‘Take me back!’ So really, this all tells you, ‘Listen to your mother, she knows best.’” • ELIZABETH VARNELL

Actor Nathalie Love spends every summer on a tiny island off the coast of Maine. It’s the kind of place with one church, one ice cream shop and just a handful of locals—her dad being one of them. It’s also the place where she got engaged to her longtime beau, director/ producer Daniel Pappas, which made the idea of a wedding here seem only natural. Planning from their Echo Park home
provided its own unique set of challenges. While Dan was charged with coordinating the music and Nathalie found cottages to accommodate all 147 guests, Nathalie’s mother, Lisa Love (the West Coast editor of Vogue), expertly curated the entire look of the wedding, calling on friends Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte to design Nathalie’s ethereal dress, Lazaro

L.A.based planner David Rodgers and florist Joseph Free were also enlisted to make the trek east. “The dress, the people… and the tequila,” says Nathalie, “all represented my love for California.”
On a misty afternoon, Nathalie and Dan were married at the Gothic-style church, which was filled with river birch trees and delphiniums. Following the ceremony, a cocktail hour was held at a family friend’s cottage before the couple led everyone to Nathalie’s father’s home (a converted ballroom that once belonged to an inn on the island) for dinner and dancing. Soft gold flatware, tapered candles, purple clematis flowers and prints of Audubon birds topped long, custom linen-covered tables inside the intimate halls. “The room was filled the way it was always meant to be. It was made for this,” says Nathalie. As for whether the bride will be changing her name, she simply explains: “Love wins.” •

Celebrity stylist Jill Lincoln and comedy writer Dominic Russo met five years ago, when friends set them up on the sly. A year later, Dominic traded the Marina del Rey sailboat he called home for a place in Venice with Jill (whose client roster includes Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Garner and Kathryn Hahn, among others). In 2016, conversation turned to making it official, particularly because Jill’s father’s health was declining. “We wanted to get married before he passed away, and we wanted to start a family,” says Jill. Almost immediately, they became pregnant with their son, Charlie, and a year later they decided to celebrate his first birthday (which falls in mid-October) with their own nuptials. “We settled on Oct. 14, which is my dad’s birthday,” Jill says, though he sadly couldn’t attend due to his health and passed away just days after the wedding.

Of course, Katherine, of the building firm Bardis Homes, was already intimately familiar with the property specs. “The project required structural engineering, and we had to create the environment down to the studs in the floor, so I knew what it would look like,” she confides. But, nuts and bolts aside, a first glimpse of the artfully unkempt SPRING WEDDINGS 2018

Katherine’s custom gown was rushed in from Milan for the reception. Below: The couple cuts the cake by PERFECT ENDINGS. The newlyweds.
Feature TBD design masterminded by Mindy Weiss wowed the bride as she and her father arrived in a vintage Rolls-Royce. The affair embraced the duo’s respective ethnicities: Bay’s sister read a poem explaining the couple’s sofreh aghd (a ceremonial table inspired by Bay’s Persian background), which was followed by the traditional Greek crowning of the bride and groom in a nod to Katherine’s familial heritage. Inside the meticulously constructed tent, the bride debuted a Gucci gown, a pale-green, made-to-order tulle confection hemmed with hand-painted silk flowers. Bay, also clad in Gucci DIY, led his wife to the dance floor to the opening strains of Etta James’ “At Last.” Their stylist, Mary Gonsalves Kinney, reflects, “There was no going back once Katherine saw the dress. It matched the five-million-flowers aesthetic of the wedding perfectly.” • RING Bella Fine Jewelry STATIONERY Lehr and Black ENTERTAINMENT West Coast Music SHOES Alexandre Birman HAIR Mischelle Navar MAKEUP Kollage Salon & Boutique VIDEOGRAPHER I Do Films RENTALS Town & Country Event Rentals

A bar in the East End of London was where it all began for fellow Brits Gemma Blest, a floral designer, and Chris Gray, a former managing director at a global investment bank. After a long night of cocktails and bonding over their mutual love for Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code—which they both happened to be reading at the time—Chris asked Gemma out for lunch the following day. “We went to a pub in Hampstead, and as soon as we left, Chris kissed me in the middle of the street,”
Feature TBD recalls Gemma. “The chemistry was instant.” Eight months later, in 2005, work took Chris to Hong Kong and Gemma followed. After eight years of living together and traveling through Southeast Asia (a highlight of which was adopting their dog, George), the couple decided to part ways, prompting Gemma to move to Los Angeles. They kept in touch for two years, and eventually Chris invited Gemma to join him on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. On the day of their arrival, they checked in at a dreamy seaside hotel that had once been a monastery, and at sunset, Chris took a ring from his pocket and asked Gemma to be his wife. “Being apart made me realize that it was unimaginable not to spend the rest of my life with her,” he explains. Adds Gemma: “We weren’t technically even dating when he proposed, which our friends found quite amusing.” The Hong Kong-based couple exchanged vows at Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards before 132 guests on the property’s hilltop location, surrounded by creamy white roses and looming green mountains. including high-drama centerpieces plush with bright poppies, vines, geranium leaves and flamingo-pink roses. After a sit-down dinner of farm-to-table fare including farro risotto with baby vegetables and Chianti-braised short ribs with rigatoni, everyone took to the dance floor. Bob Gail’s Jump Start played a mean “Uptown Funk,” according to Gemma, but there was no first dance: “We originally chose a slow song, but the bottom of my dress was so soaked from the rain I couldn’t move well, so we just jumped around and had a ball.” The following day, the couple held a recovery lunch at Herringbone Santa Monica with Bloody Marys, lobster rolls and leftover lemon poppyseed wedding cake. •

C Insider JOSE VILLA
With his signature fine-art approach to wedding photography, Jose Villa (josevilla.com) has become one of the industry’s most in-demand talents. Widely published in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Martha Stewart Weddings and beyond—making headlines last year with his shots of Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli’s Palm Springs wedding—Villa readily shares the secrets behind his cinematic compositions at his annual photography workshops in his native Mexico. And while Villa calls California’s Solvang home, he spends much of the year jet-setting to capture weddings across the globe. Here, he shares his top six favorite destinations for “I do’s” in 2018. • Villa d’Este in Lake Como makes you feel like you are walking back in time, with impeccable service and old-Italy vibes. villadeste.com. • Amanjena in Marrakech offers one of the most amazing spa experiences you can ever have. You feel like you own the place. aman.com. • San Ysidro Ranch is nestled in the stunning hills of Santa Barbara, with lots of great history. sanysidroranch.com. • Hacienda Uayamon in Campeche, Mexico, is housed in a Mayan structure that dates back to 1700. The front area of the hotel is a wedding dream—the location and pools are just so pretty! haciendauayamon. com. • Soori Bali offers a modern twist on Bali, boasting incredible views and a beautiful black-sand beach. sooribali.com. • Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm is so charming. Drink hot chocolate by the fireplace and just chill. blackberryfarm.com.
California Photo Finish
Clockwise from center: MIRANDA KERR getting ready for her big day. The final fitting. The bride with PATRICK DEMARCHELIER, who photographed the wedding. With friends at the reception. The couple’s dog, Teddy, awaiting the ceremony.
When Miranda Kerr, Aussie model, health practitioner and founder of skin care line Kora Organics, became engaged to Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel in July 2016, she shared the news via the social media platform, naturally. But contrary to the speed at which the popular app operates, the big day (in May) was anything but rushed: The bride woke up extra early to make her husband-tobe’s favorite dish, a turmeric and lemon slow-roasted chicken, before the two enjoyed a calming yoga session together. Wedding prep included a magnesium salt bath with essential oils. “I added my rose quartz crystals to the water for a soothing energy,” she
says, while the makeup regimen hinged on creating a look that was “classic, timeless and feminine” using products including Kora Organics Radiance Eye Oil, RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up concealer, La Prairie Radiance Cellular Cream Blush and Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Lashes mascara, with Kora Organics Heart Chakra Aromatherapy Oil as her fragrance. The couple wed in the backyard of their Brentwood home before nearly 50 guests; the bride wore a custom Dior Haute Couture gown (designed and fitted by creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri), and her then 6-year-old son, Flynn, was the ring bearer. koraorganics.com. •
