FOUNDER’S LETTER
This past winter has been a brutal one for parts of our state, with the December fires in the Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties, the latter of which gave way to devastating mudslides for our neighbors in Montecito. Having been temporarily evacuated from my beloved hometown due to this disastrous turn of events, I hold on to the comforting knowledge that the good days here far outweigh the bad. Across California, there’s so much to look forward to this spring, including one of my favorite distractions: the March fashion issue, chock-full of interesting and unique statements from style to song! Take our cover subject, Lana Del Rey, who recently embarked on a world tour to celebrate her latest album, Lust for Life. Using her voice in more than just lyrical ways, she is a force for her legions of fans. Photographed by Victor Demarchelier in Malibu on a sunny Saturday, Del Rey arrived to set excited to tackle the shoot, having checked into a hotel the evening before to find her room full of C Magazines (coincidentally—Scout’s honor!). She took a video and shared it with us on set as a sign of a great shoot ahead; I’m sure you’ll agree she was right. Speaking of epic photo shoots, we captured the best of the season’s trends on location around the state. I don’t think California offers a more dramatic setting than the Salton Sea, with its postapocalyptic, Mad Max sensibility. With raw, natural elements as a backdrop, the images shot by Beau Grealy are nothing less than exquisite. And a gritty part of Downtown Los Angeles served as the perfect setting for a night shoot by Alistair Taylor-Young, featuring futuristic fashion mixed with a feminine touch. Also in this issue: M, formerly known as Michael Chow, the man at the helm of the Mr Chow empire, has made it his life’s passion to immerse himself in all forms of culture. His restaurants always have art as a basis of their design principles, with Warhols and Basquiats peppering the walls—evidence of his friendships with these famous talents. Over the course of M’s fascinating 50-year career, he has also returned to his own calling as an artist, and his work is now collected and shown all over the world. To mark this golden anniversary, a new coffee-table book celebrates his glittering accomplishments. Sitting down with fellow artist Jonas Wood, M waxes eloquent on everything from portraits to Richard Prince. A fashionable life, indeed. It brings to mind a quote from poet Richard Eberhart, who defined style as “the perfection of a point of view.” Taking this definition to heart, I personally am thrilled that our “view” is one that involves the Pacific Ocean, beautiful beaches and seriously stunning topography. At the end of the day, for me, it makes it all worthwhile.

C PEOPLE Who’s who behind the scenes of this month’s issue, plus their favorite California places
Victor Demarchelier Issa Lish “The world is much bigger than you think, but I didn’t quite understand how big until I started traveling,” says model Issa Lish, who found herself in the Salton Sea for “Ground Control,” p.162. The Mexico City native, who now calls New York home, has been featured in Vogue and W Magazine. She has walked the runway for Versace, Chanel and Tommy Hilfiger. C SPOTS • In-N-Out, because we don’t have this delight on the East Coast • Joshua Tree is the most beautiful park I’ve ever seen • Rodeo Drive—I grew up watching Pretty Woman and there’s something so magical about that street
C People 1
“I have always been a fan of Lana [Del Rey]’s music so it was a real treat for me to meet and work with her,” says makeup artist Kate Lee. “She is a dream to paint!” The Los Angeles-based Brit has worked with C from the very beginning, and has also amassed 12 years as a Chanel celebrity makeup artist with a client roster featuring Rooney Mara, Charlize Theron and Dakota Johnson. C SPOTS • The Raymond is one of my favorite restaurants in Pasadena. The building itself is an old carriage house and it’s tucked away under a bridge • Amsterdam Modern in Highland Park for notable midcentury designer furniture • The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, where I enjoy a few quiet hours and gather inspiration
Jonas Wood Alexandra Agoston A muse to Jean-Paul Gaultier, model Alexandra Agoston has appeared in publications such as W Magazine, Elle and Purple. Having worked with photographers such as Steven Klein and Craig McDean, the New York-based Australian native posed for lensman Alistair Taylor-Young in the feature “Night Rider,” p.130. “This was such a fun shoot,” she says. “It felt like we had stepped into a cult movie and I was in a secret part of L.A. I had never seen before.” C 64 MARCH 2018
“I grew up in a collecting family,” says L.A.-based artist Jonas Wood. “My sister used to play piano in front of this giant [Francis] Bacon painting. I must’ve absorbed something there.” Known for merging many facets of his life into a single composition, Wood has work permanently residing in some of California’s most recognized museums, such as The Broad, Hammer Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In “No Reservations,” p.154, he interviews the artist and restaurateur M, formerly known as Michael Chow. C SPOTS • I spend a lot of time at my own studio because I like to work • I enjoy taking my kids to Malibu Beach near Point Dume and being by the water • Staples Center for basketball games

“Working with Lana [Del Rey] was amazing,” says Victor Demarchelier of shooting this month’s cover star for “Siren Song,” p.146. “She was so laid back and cool.” The New York-based photographer has a fine arts background, and has shot subjects spanning Big Sean to Naomi Watts for Interview and Vogue. C SPOTS • West Hollywood’s Petit Ermitage for a rooftop breakfast • The Petersen Automotive Museum on Wilshire is incredible, even if you don’t like cars • Giorgio Baldi, my favorite restaurant in L.A.

Champ, 2016: An earlier version of artist ZOË BUCKMAN’s sculpture, from a private collection.

COURTESY OF ZOË BUCKMAN
Winning Streak Sunset Boulevard has long been synonymous with spectacle; the latest example comes with a thought-provoking message. On Feb. 27—just in time for the Oscars— London-born, New York-based artist Zoë Buckman, whose work has appeared at the Pulse and Art Basel contemporary art fairs, will unveil her feminist installation Champ, a rotating sculpture measuring 9 feet in diameter and comprising a white neon uterus with boxing gloves in place of ovaries. Installed in front of The Standard,
Hollywood at a height of 43 feet (and on view through February 2019), the work’s location is highly intentional, says Buckman: “The visual landscape on Sunset is saturated with billboard images of women; it made sense to juxtapose [Champ] against the sexual objectification portrayed there.” The piece was conceived before the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements rocked Hollywood, but the current climate has certainly made the work take on more significance. Buckman and the Art
Production Fund (APF), which secured funding for the project via fashion label Alice and Olivia, found a willing partner in the city of West Hollywood, and throughout 2018, APF will host public programs and discussions inspired by Champ. “It represents many things that deserve protection,” says Buckman. “I’m really excited about taking it beyond an object, and making it into an opportunity for social engagement.” zoebuckman.com. • LESLEY M.M. Hancock Park-based artist Jason Trotter creates geometric triptychs rendered in vivid acrylic swaths that call out for wall domination. “The correlation from panel to panel allows a larger story to be told,” says Trotter, a former fashion and celebrity publicist who parlayed his longtime hobby into a full-time pursuit last year, when he listed his works on the e-commerce design site Chairish. Interior designers around the country, including Carolina de Neufville, who commissioned pieces for Veronica Beard’s new Melrose Place store, snapped up his works. Also on deck: The Chairish Print Shop, for which nine artists created exclusive prints, and Saatchi Art’s inaugural The Other Art Fair in L.A. MIXING TOUGHNESS WITH FEMININITY AT WORK AND AT HOME, JESSE KAMM REDEFINES HAVING IT ALL Designer Jesse Kamm, the woman behind the high-waist canvas sailor pants that are de rigueur for Los Angeles’ eastside fashion set, had already formed an emotional attachment to her Mount Washington studio, set down the hill from her home, when it came up for sale last summer. The previous owner, Little Flower Candy Co. founder Christine Moore, is a friend, and while Kamm, a 5-foot-11inch former model, insisted the timing for expanding her brand (which launched in 2005) wasn’t right, Moore sounded a rallying cry. “She said, ‘Honey, opportunity never comes at an opportune time,’ ” Kamm recalls with naked admiration. where a tangle of untamed wisteria vines bursts wild through the window—now serves as an office for Kamm’s husband and the brand’s chief operating officer, Luke Brower, with whom she has an 8-year-old son, Julien. In the back rooms, stacks of Kamm pants in new and reissued saturated hues line the walls, and a rack containing samples from Spring 2018—“an ode to my rural Illinois roots,” she says—stands nearby. “We’re introducing bib overalls,” she adds. The furnishings throughout are testament to Team Kamm’s scrappy spirit, from the marble-topped coffee table in the front room—a DIY project whose materials were sourced on Craigslist—to the handmade Donald Judd-inspired sofa and utilitarian Douglas fir and pine dining table, constructed by Brower. Works by the couple’s talented friends grace the white walls: a sunset-washed landscape photograph by Todd Cole, an abstract mobile by Claire Oswalt, paintings by Annie Costello Brown, and ceramics by Bari Ziperstein and Victoria Morris. “I’m surrounded by my people,” Kamm says. It’s this kinship with fellow independent creatives that drives her desire to keep things small—limiting distribution to 25 stores worldwide, despite an evergrowing demand for Kamm’s take on ladylike workwear. The scale of the business also enables her hard-won lifestyle: The

family moves to Panama three months out of the year, surfing and living in an off-thegrid home they built themselves. “My goals are to be happy, stay healthy, stay inspired and keep making things that I want to wear—and hopefully other people will want to wear them, too,” she says. “And if that all comes to an end? I dunno… surf more? Write a kids’ book? We’ll morph. That’s what we do.” jessekamm.com. • MELISSA GOLDSTEIN
WHAT’S HOT Spotlight
WH runway WALK This Way
A NEW FASHION TOME IS A FRONTROW LOOK AT RUNWAY HISTORY In our modern era of Instagrammable everything, the phrase “New York Fashion Week” conjures visions of bloggerfestooned front rows and bottomless Champagne. But once upon a time, the New York runways were the place where a bad Women’s Wear Daily review could break one’s career, department store buyers came from all over the country to buy, and names including Bill Blass and Perry Ellis put America on the map as the casually cool sportswear capital of the world. From its founding as a trade event by publicist Eleanor Lambert in 1943, to today’s era of digital disruption, New York Fashion Week’s history is dissected and celebrated in American Runway: 75 Years of Fashion and the Front Row (Abrams Books, $65), a new coffee-table tome written by Booth Moore, The Hollywood Reporter style and fashion news director (and former Los Angeles Times fashion critic), in collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
“It tells the story of how a group of kick-ass women got the American fashion industry off the ground,” says Moore, whose book—which includes a forward written by Diane von Furstenberg—tells of American fashion’s rise during World War II, when French fashion houses were closed and the timing was ripe for the rise of James Galanos, and later, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein. While 7th Avenue is American Runway’s focus, the City of Angels is also represented by way of Hollywood’s own runway: the red carpet and stylists—Rachel Zoe and Cristina Ehrlich, included—who adorn it. “It’s interesting to write about being in Hollywood,” Moore says, noting the celebrity “front-row show”—aka the catwalkadjacent fashionistas who are photographed at a designer’s fashion week presentation—is instrumental in bringing American fashion awareness to the masses. After all, she adds, “That’s how the runway became a stage.” • ERIN WEINGER

JACQUES COLLECTION RODOLFO DORDONI DESIGN
FASHION Through Paolo Roversi’s lens, designs by Dior seem to transcend mere wardrobe. The Italian photographer creates poetic portraits, memorializing models such as a luminous Kate Moss, swathed in a transparent coat from the French fashion house’s Spring/Summer 2015 haute couture collection, in photo shoots for the likes of Vogue Paris, among others. Almost 100 such images buoy Dior Images: Paolo Roversi (Rizzoli New York, $125), a new 168-page tome. In his opening essay, philosopher Emanuele Coccia notes: “Fashion is nothing but the art of realizing visions.” Often soft in focus and inspired by Byzantine culture, Roversi’s vision is enthralling. After all, as he wrote to late Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani, “We tried to glorify these unique, extraordinary pieces, whose artisanal work often borders on magic.”

Model ALEXANDRA AGOSTON lights up the night with help from experts JO STRETTELL and CHRISTIAN MARC.
Dark Angel “The shoot was Blade Runner inspired—a beautiful woman swimming in moody colored lights and dark shadows. It’s gritty and a little seedy, but sexy,” says makeup artist Jo Strettell of the look she created for the “Night Rider” fashion feature, p.130. “I needed to use and place products that would work in these elements.” It was all about the eyes, explains the artist, who used Jillian Dempsey’s Khôl Eyeliner in Jet
Black ($20) smudged over the eye and her Lid Tint in Plum ($28) over the pencil for a “wet” effect, followed by layers of L’Oréal’s Voluminous Original Mascara ($7) to achieve clumpy black lashes designed to catch the light in a profile shot. On the face, she applied Glossier Priming Moisturizer ($22) for glow, with minimal foundation and a smudge of Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk ($18) on the cheeks with a dab of lip gloss.
(Translate the look to real life by following the same steps, but pulling back on the amount of product.) Christian Marc kept the hair wet and sleek, mixing three Oribe products— Supershine Moisturizing Cream ($52), Smooth Style Serum ($54) and Star Glow Styling Wax ($42)—to get the right texture and shine. For daytime wear, apply the products to wet hair, comb through, and let dry. •

Flip Side “From a distance and to a modernist, L.A. is all Case Study and Eames,” observes rare furniture and decorative arts dealer Lawrence Converso. “But the region’s real design identity is more complex.” Converso has been showcasing pedigreed and experimental furniture along
with decorative and functional objects since 1993—originally in Chicago, then in Manhattan and now at Converso LA. (The 2,200-square-foot space on Beverly Boulevard, formerly occupied by LawsonFenning, also includes an area for shows.) Katie Nartonis adds her expertise in
California art and design history as gallery director of the new outpost. Among the cool finds at Converso are a suite of furniture by Palm Springs architect Albert Frey, and work by interdisciplinary artist Jan de Swart. 7257 Beverly Blvd., L.A., 323-8523035; conversomod.com. • JESSICA RITZ

For Jane Hallworth, infusing rich narratives into her thoughtfully curated projects is par for the course, so it’s no wonder the British-born, L.A.-based interior architect and lighting designer uses her eponymous Hallworth line as a means of storytelling. Her latest collection, Odyssey, is “inspired by constellations, space, dreams, things far and away,” she explains, adding that the recipe for her work is “one part futurism, two parts nostalgia and a heaping dose of imagination.” Blackman Cruz, 836 N. Named for the verdant valleys of L.A., McGuire Furniture’s new Canyon Collection unites the company’s classic forms with the modern architecture of Marmol Radziner. The elegant, cleverly constructed furniture, fabrics and housewares are crafted from solid oak, white bronze, natural rawhide and planed rattan. A gently sloped coffee table and low-slung sectional resemble custom pieces Marmol Radziner has created for clients including Tom Ford. “We sought to design pieces that would suit a relaxed California lifestyle,” says Ron Radziner, the firm’s design principal, “wherever a person might reside.” mcguirefurniture.com. Earthly Delights Peeking into The Other Half flower shop in Koreatown, it isn’t entirely clear if you should go inside to buy some blooms or ask for a tarot card reading. “My style is very specific—a little bit out of the box,” says artist and floral designer Nelson Pitts. After 15 years in New York City, “the West Coast was calling,” so the Fashion Institute of Technology alum established his Los Angeles brand focusing on event work in the fall of 2016. A year later came the opening of the retail component, a playful botanical boutique filled with gestural arrangements, shimmering geodes and coral specimens. 3019 W. 6th St., L.A., 213-908-5270; theotherhalfla.com.

Reaching for the Stars Shortly before Erik Anderson stepped into the kitchen at Coi, it was awarded three Michelin stars—a pinnacle for the San Francisco restaurant, and a towering challenge for the new chef. “Here’s the thing,” Anderson says, without a trace of nerves. “Holding on to them matters a lot. I wouldn’t be out here if it didn’t.” Anderson, who had been working in Minneapolis after making a name for
himself at The Catbird Seat in Nashville, acclimated to the Bay Area by cooking alongside Coi’s founding chef, Daniel Patterson, and in January he unveiled the new menu: a nine-course degustation of gorgeous, modern French cuisine ($250). Compared with Coi’s previous menus, Anderson spotlights meat more than vegetables, with intricate dishes such as Tourte, a savory tart filled with sweetbreads, foie gras and
duck embellished with Armagnac cream and pureed black truffle. “This is one of the greatest parts of the country to cook in,” Anderson says, pointing out that there are more threestar restaurants in the Bay Area than in New York. Will Coi continue to be one of them? “I don’t want to obsess,” he says. “But I’m hopeful.” 373 Broadway, S.F., 415-393-9000; coirestaurant.com. • MICHALENE BUSICO

Who would guess the dish—elegant and delicious—was inspired by a simple pastrami sandwich? “Langer’s, of course!” chef Nyesha Arrington says, referring to the iconic Los Angeles deli. Inside the kitchen of the recently opened Native, Arrington draws on a lifetime of L.A. influences to create a bold menu of seasonal ingredients and global flavors, as well as French and Asian techniques. “It’s a celebration of the terroir and culture of L.A.,” says the chef, who was born in the city and now lives a few blocks from the restaurant in Santa Monica. “Every week, I ride my bike or walk to the market. It’s my story.” Arrington, who previously helmed Venice’s beloved, now-shuttered, Leona and has cooked in the kitchens of Joël Robuchon, Josiah Citrin, and Raphael Lunetta, personalizes dish after dish: bison tartare is seasoned with “Aisoon sauce,” named for her Korean grandmother. With a group of 20 women (spanning entrepreneurs to fashion world insiders to students), she decamped to Morocco to, in her words, “share a little bit of what [I’ve] learned about the art of life and the art of traveling.” The destination has long been close to her heart: “My grandmother is Moroccan—it’s part of my culture,” she explains. “It’s a country bursting with creativity. Artisans are everywhere…sometimes we get so detached from the fact that we can actually make things with our two hands. I want to help feel that connection.” Here, Doré shares the spots that top her short list. atelierdore.com.

inspiration for Del Rey in the last few years, often from behind the wheel of her truck (“It’s brand-new, it’s not a nostalgic, 1950s pickup,” she quips. “I’m over my old-car obsession—I’m happy with Bluetooth”), driving along the Pacific Coast Highway. The tony San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, which was devastated in the winter mudslides, was always a favorite destination for Del Rey to recharge. “I’d say the last two years have been relatively peaceful,” says Del Rey of her current frame of mind, which has since seeped into her work. “I think that’s kind
“[California] is where I have the most space to be creative and have time alone and have a lot of privacy.” Del Rey made the move to L.A. in 2012, partly inspired by a greater migration of friends from the music world, including her longtime collaborator, producer and songwriter Dan Heath. She had spent the previous four years “looking for that community [of musicians] that I had heard was in New York when The Strokes and people like Adam Green of The Moldy Peaches were there. I just kind of hadn’t found it. I think a lot of people moved West.” The music icon quickly discovered what she was looking for. “It’s where I have the most space to be creative and have time alone and have a lot of privacy—but at the same time, have a lot of amazing, artistic friends,” says Del Rey, who rose to fame with her 2011 hit single “Video Games.” That streak continued with back-toback studio albums, starting with her 2012 major-label debut Born to Die, which landed in the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 and never left the list. (It recently earned the distinction as one of only three albums by a female artist to spend 300 weeks on the chart.) Later that year, Del Rey released an EP, Paradise, which earned her a Grammy nod, as did the song “Young and Beautiful” on The Great Gatsby soundtrack. Ultraviolence, Del Rey’s first album to reach pole position on the U.S. charts, arrived in 2014, followed by 2015’s Honeymoon. California has been a source of

of why my newer record has a little bit of a brighter tone to it, whereas before I was definitely working a lot and on the road 24/7,” she says. “I’m still traveling a lot but I had a lot more to work through a couple years ago, I guess.” That shift in perspective shines through on ballads such as “Change,” the last song Del Rey wrote for the album, which addresses the fact that she was seeking change in her life but didn’t know how to go about it. “It was just more like a small bubbling of wanting to turn things around aesthetically in my art and personally as well. I really like the idea that life imitates art and I’ve noticed that in my own work. I knew that good things could follow if I put it out there that I was still trying to grow.” Born Elizabeth “Lizzy” Woolridge Grant, Del Rey admits to being “one of those people who annoyingly was singing before they were talking,” she says. (“I’m that kind of singer—singing all my sentences. I still do.”) Growing up in Lake Placid, N.Y., Del Rey always knew music would be an important part of her life, but “I didn’t really think I could do it, and sort of have a real career.” After attending a boarding school in Connecticut, Del Rey graduated from Fordham University with a degree in philosophy—all the while chasing her dreams on New York’s nightlife circuit as Lizzy Grant, releasing her debut EP, Kill, Kill, in 2008.

But it wasn’t until she took on the enchanting stage name of Lana Del Rey, and honed in on her signature retro-glam image (think beehives, plumped-up lashes and winged eyeliner) that the artist began to rack up both musical accolades, and a cult-like following—not to mention more than a handful of infatuated fans. (During her Orlando tour date, police thwarted a kidnapping attempt by one.) While Lust for Life doesn’t break free from Del Rey’s signature, melancholytinged songs, it charts new territory with songs such as “Coachella—Woodstock in My Mind,” which reflects on the current political climate. It’s also the first time Del Rey has featured collaborations with other artists on her albums, including The Weeknd, Sean Lennon and Stevie Nicks (the latter is featured on the ballad “Beautiful People Beautiful Problems”). “I think I was too nervous to do it. I wasn’t sure what people would say. When I got Stevie Nicks to sing with me I wasn’t sure they’d think I was worthy of a Stevie collab, but she was so fabulous in person and she was a fan. So it kind of made me put my guard down a little bit.” On days Del Rey is scheduled to perform, she does an entire run-through of the show with her band, before watching a performance by the likes of Whitney Houston or Ariana Grande. “It could be anybody but just something that I can sing along to, to warm up my entire range—to go from my lowest octave, like in ‘Ride,’ to my high Cs and Ds in a song like ‘When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing,’” she explains. Part of her warm-up also includes a guided meditation for 1 hour and 40 minutes—the same length as her show. “I try and kind of balance out how much time I’m going to put out to sort of put that much time in. I mean, saying it out loud, the whole thing sounds kind of crazy, but I don’t think I would do it as much if I wasn’t doing arenas,” she says. “Now I’m going to sound so L.A.” Standing before packed stadiums, Del Rey is surrounded by a set design that takes cues from her California surrounds, including an oceanscape from Big Sur, projected onto a screen. After all, Del Rey’s world has become her stage. Just take the opening lyric of “Lust for Life”: Climb up the H of the Hollywood sign…In these stolen moments, the world is mine.” •

Lana Del Rey has always been a California girl at heart. Even before she put down roots in Los Angeles, the New York native had an affinity for the West Coast way of life. “I’m very liberal and I always have been. I also really love the organic lifestyle and all the outdoor activities. I’m a real happy transplant,” says the singer-songwriter over the phone. She’s calling from Columbus, Ohio, one of the stops in her world tour, “LA to the Moon,” which kicked off in January in support of her latest LP, the Grammynominated Lust for Life.

AS HE CELEBRATES MR CHOW’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY, M, THE RENAISSANCE MAN FORMERLY KNOWN AS MICHAEL chow CHOW, SITS DOWN FOR A CANDID CONVERSATION WITH FELLOW ARTIST JONAS WOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAINER HOSCH WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH VARNELL

the 1950s before dedicating himself to painting for the next 10 years. That went “nowhere,” he says, “because of racism and all that.” In 1968, M put down his brushes to create Mr Chow, a dramatic
new theatrical restaurant concept in Knightsbridge using Chinese cuisine as a cultural bridge. What followed is the stuff of legend: Nightly guests, including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles

and all of swinging London, gathered in his art-filled eatery to see and be seen. From that moment on, M and art epicenters traveled in tandem. He opened stunning Mr Chow outposts in New York City, Los Angeles and other major cities, regularly hosting parties for such painters as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Julian Schnabel. To celebrate the past five decades, M compiled Mr Chow: 50 Years (DelMonico Books/ Prestel Publishing, $50), a new volume filled with images from his personal archive, including a mixedmedia painting he commissioned from English pop artist Peter Blake (the mind behind the album art for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) for the original Mr Chow. The work helped launch M’s ever-expanding portrait collection. Similarly, the restaurant’s guest book-turned-drawing book, also photographed in the new volume, is awash with images penned by Francis Bacon,
Keith Haring, Ed Ruscha, Damien Hirst, Urs Fischer, Richard Prince and countless other art-world luminaries, many of whom also created images of M and his family. Having made his return to painting a few years ago, creating heavily textured, monumental abstract canvases, M recently sat down in his new 57,000-square-foot Vernon studio with L.A.-based artist Jonas Wood for a conversation on portraiture, poker and perfect timing.
M: How did we meet? Wood: We have mutual friends—your daughter China and Alex Israel as well—but I first went to Mr Chow for a dinner following Richard Prince’s “Cowboys” show at the Gagosian [in Beverly Hills] just before the Oscars in 2013. Then we started playing poker occasionally—I’m a horrible poker player; you’re pretty good. M: There’s a film [on highstakes Hollywood poker] now, you know, Molly’s Game. Wood: Yes, and here we are away from the poker table and in your new studio. It’s been 50 years since your London restaurant opened with art by David Hockney and Peter Blake, who also painted your portrait. When did you start collecting? M: I commissioned a symbolic painting about racism from Blake, and he came up with a portrait of me and wrestlers and Italian waiters and Japanese wind chimes—it mixed cultures, the antithesis of racism.

At that time, no artist did portraiture. I’m a born collector, I collect everything. So I said, ‘It might be fun to collect portraits.’ This was pre-Andy [Warhol], pre-everything. It was very uncool. Wood: Let’s describe the Keith Haring portrait, the painting with you in a bowl of soup. M: First of all, green prawns with six
arms, in Chinese superstition, or whatever, is [lucky]. Keith liked to eat the soup and made me very ugly in a bowl of noodles—very pop and all that—so it was a powerful thing. Wood: Such a great painting, it’s not like Haring made tons of portraits of people either. It’s very unique. But you’ve always had a striking look and a very deep
interest in fashion. For me, as one of the artists who’s made a portrait of you, you have a very unique look. You opened a restaurant and became part of the culture you were creating. You were identifiable. M: Well, I don’t like my look too much. But I do think Andy brought back portraiture again, single-handedly. Wood: When did he take your picture?
Artists JONAS WOOD and M are as likely to meet at the poker table as at their respective studios. “Art is basically having a conversation,” says M. “And also...to be able to contribute. And if you are not able to contribute, that means you are not a very good artist; if you contribute a lot, you are the greatest artist on earth.”

M: 1985. Late, very late for him, for his portraiture. Now portraiture is right in the forefront. Things change so much, they’re always changing. Jonas, you do fantastic portraiture. Wood: I knew about all the amazing portraits that had been done of you and I thought, ‘I have to make a portrait.’ I had taken some pictures in your house, and, originally, I was going to make a painting of you playing poker, but then it just became a straight portrait, almost like a passport photo. In the book, you mentioned that I made you look old with lines and everything, but you look amazing for 79 years—though Wikipedia says 78. Is that your Hollywood age? M: I’m just vain, that’s all. No, my mother changed my birthdate when I was young to try to delay me going into the selective service in England. But let’s talk a little less about my age. Wood: Let’s talk about the drawing book, a sort of guest book at the restaurants. It’s been photographed for your new book, and some of my friends have even drawn in it, so I always knew about it. images. When I was younger, I actually couldn’t draw on the fly. I wanted little elements of my paintings to be part of my language when I signed something, so I developed it over the past couple of years. M: Some of the drawings are very serious. On that subject, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Cy Twombly both had different points of view. Basquiat did underground graffiti and he was always threatened by the police, so he had to do it very quickly. Then you have Cy Twombly, who wanted to draw in the dark using, instead of the right hand, the left hand. For artists—like my father, who was a great artist—the technique and know-how is in the way. You want to get rid of technique. We want to get back to the childlike, the internal spontaneity. Wood: Even a line can define an artist. M: Right. Wood: Twombly signed a plate for you that barely has any information on it, but you know that Twombly’s hand drew it—same with Basquiat. That’s what’s interesting about that sketchbook to me, because all these people that drew things are these superstars, but they’re not just defined by being superstars; they have their own line, their own mark that defines them. M: Back to the mark, at the moment, we’ve got 1.4 billion Chinese, and every one of them can write calligraphy. And yet in the history of China there have only been a few [calligraphy artists]
who’ve been great. Through them, the Chinese have already distilled everything into the power of calligraphy, what the Chinese call “one breath.” Everything is in there. Same with Twombly—when he makes a mark, when Jonas makes a mark, these marks are personal, internal and true to one’s own time. Wood: And the drawing book built on itself. There’s this thing in the art world, as you know, people want to touch what other artists have touched. Your restaurants have been a place for artistic people to come together to celebrate art, creativity. M: And classical musicians, film directors, all the creative energy. Federico f---ing Fellini, Orson Welles. What’s so amazing, maybe through luck, my timing has always been perfect. If you look at all these artists in the book over 50 years, everybody has become somebody. •

“The San Francisco I have returned to is, at once, entirely different and remarkably the same,” says Calgary Avansino (calgaryavansino.com (calgaryavansino.com), the California-bred fashion arbiter and wellness editor who, after a 16-year spell at British Vogue in London, recently moved back to the Bay Area with her husband and their three kids. “The exciting changes are what drew us back to this idyllic city, and the bustling Hayes Valley I now roam is no exception to the buzz,” Avansino says. Here, the plant-based-living advocate and author of Keep It Real shows us around her favorite San Francisco neighborhood. • Little Gem is bright, cheerful, and has healthy, delicious food. littlegem.restaurant. • Lux SF for a manicure that lasts and lasts. luxsf.net. • Fiddlesticks is kid heaven. Camila Morrone tried “rebelling against” the family business, she says. “I was like, ‘I want to be a cardiac surgeon. I want to be a doctor. I want to be a lawyer. Anything but acting,’ ” explains Al Pacino’s stepdaughter, whose parents are Argentine actors Lucila Solá and Maximo Morrone. “But internally, I knew. I liked performing in front of my mom’s friends at dinner parties. The acting bug was in me, even though I tried to fight it.” Pacino cast Camila, at age 7, as a young version of Jessica Chastain’s character in the Oscar Wilde drama Salomé. “I got cut out of the movie,” she says with a laugh. But the Los Angeles native relished the opportunity to observe Chastain. “She was a baby,” Camila reminisces. “And I was, too.” She is now entering leadinglady territory, starring in this month’s Death Wish, an actionthriller directed by Eli Roth. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” Camila says of playing Jordan Kersey, the daughter of Bruce Willis’ character in the film. The 20-year-old also appears in the Sundance drama Never Goin’ Back alongside Maia Mitchell and in the upcoming musical remake of Valley Girl opposite Alicia Silverstone. “You never really know how it’s going to play out in this industry,” says the former model, noting her close proximity to Hollywood has given her an insider’s view. “You can have one hit movie and never work again, so I always keep that in mind. I don’t have any expectations and we’ll see where that takes me.” • LINDZI SCHARF
