I admit it: I am a sucker for romantic stories. My own wedding was two decades ago this summer, and the unending circuit of friends’ nuptials has long passed, yet I still love all the pomp and circumstance surrounding a good oldfashioned wedding. I can’t think of a more magical moment full of all of the splendor and ceremony one would hope for than the recent nuptials of Prince Harry to California’s own Meghan Markle. While I didn’t wake up in the middle of the night to watch it live (like I did when Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer married), I did record it and enjoyed every exceptional detail at a more reasonable viewing hour. It was a modern fairy tale in every sense of the word. You don’t have to be royal to live out your own version of a storybook celebration. Our goal with C Weddings is to help you create your dream day, however you envision it. This issue, full of endless inspiration, should be your guidebook along the way. When one of New York City’s social swans elected to fly west for her wedding, it was only natural she’d select the storied grounds of The Beverly Hills Hotel for the site. Meggie Kempner (granddaughter of fabled New York socialite Nan Kempner) and Ian McLean, who met in 2013 through mutual friends, tied the knot in the property’s grand Crystal Garden in April. “Los Angeles is a city we both love, and we wanted everyone to have a weekend together instead of just a dinner [in New York],” says Meggie, co-founder of fashion brand Kempner and her eponymous interiors company Meggie Kempner Design. Ian, originally from Cincinnati, is a senior vice president at Oaktree Capital Management. The hotel’s iconic botanical wallpaper manifested in nearly every detail of the 275-person affair, including the bride’s strapless custom Oscar de la Renta wedding gown with embroidered fern detailing. “I saw a dress from a recent collection that had this kind of leafy nonfloral motif, and fell in love,” she says. “I reached out to Fernando [Garcia] and Laura [Kim] who told me that we could work together to create something custom, which was exciting.” From there,

the leaf theme took root, springing up in floral arrangements (which included ferns and garden greens), on the handpainted curtains behind the band—even on the three-layer cake by The Butter End Cakery. Flora aside, the event’s most meaningful element became clear to the bride as she made her way down the aisle. “My father turned to me and suggested we stop, look around and take in the moment—and I saw all of my favorite people, and my husband, waiting for us to enter. BRIDE-TO-BE ALEXA DELL SELECTS A DARING FLORAL DIOR DESIGN FOR HER ENGAGEMENT PARTY
Fashion “I knew I wanted to wear Dior; Maria Grazia Chiuri’s last three collections were so moving,” says Alexa Dell, describing the starting point of her dress search in the weeks leading up to the celebration of her engagement to real estate investor Harrison Refoua. The Los Angelesbased 24-year-old, herself a business development strategist for startups (and the daughter of Dell founder Michael Dell), says Grazia Chiuri is “making the perfect dresses for young, modern women.” After scanning the line’s spring collection, Dell immediately settled on a floor-length, transparent, ecru and ivory confection, with a bustier top, strewn with hundreds of threedimensional embroidered flowers. Dell worked closely with Dior seamstresses in Beverly Hills to perfect the dress’ transparency. “Once we saw parts of the dress without the lining, you could see all the details of the embroidery and there was no going back,” she says. This summer, Dell—whose mother, Susan, launched the cultish New York-based fashion label Phi in the aughts—will delve deeper into design for her trousseau. “I’ll be in Paris

Blunder’s advice: “It’s important to match the shade to your complexion. Try a warm coral undertone for darker skin, and for lighter skin, I love a cool blue/strawberry undertone.” She also recommends using lip liner, blended with a brush, and a layered approach. “Start with the deepest color. Lightly dust the lips with setting powder for a light matte look that can take you through the ceremony and photos. Then move on to a more relaxed option, like a lip stain or a gloss to take you through the party.

With all eyes on the ring, a bride’s manicure must be on point: beautifully shaped and polished to perfection. Most brides go with neutrals, light pink/ blush tones and subtle nudes— hues that won’t detract from the dress. Classic though the look may be, it’s hardly exciting or on-trend. Incorporating rose gold accents into the scheme can elevate things. “Rose gold is feminine and subtle, but still adds sparkle,” says Jaclyn Ferber, co-founder and creative director for nontoxic nail salon mini-chain Tenoverten. She advises using rose gold as an accent, as the liner on a traditional French design, or conversely as the liner along the cuticle cuffs using a thin nail art brush.
“There are definitely women who can carry a super bold lip,” she adds, but to maintain an elevated look, she suggests keeping the rest of your makeup minimal. “Think beautiful lashes, thin eyeliner, clean, dewy skin with a hint of bronzer, and a touch of cream blush on the apples of the cheeks.” •

At home in West Hollywood, Roxanne Saei, a lawyer, and Jordan Schau, founder of bicycle brand Pure Cycles, cook nearly every evening. “And our meals are almost always accompanied by a crisp and beautiful glass of wine,” says Roxanne. With its Michelin-pedigreed kitchen and bucolic grounds surrounded by some of California’s best wineries, Meadowood (meadowood.com) in Napa Valley proved the ideal venue for the couple’s nuptials
last summer. “We were definitely too busy to sit down and eat, except when it came to the fried chicken,” the bride recalls. “We each made sure to have at least a bite of that!” Here, the ingredients of their delicious day: 1. “I had always envisioned getting married barefoot in the woods,” says Rachel. Yet after getting engaged, the couple pursued a different direction. “We wanted our friends to feel like they had been kidnapped and gone on a great vacation,” Rachel says of the decision to wed at the historic Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild (villa-ephrussi.com) in SaintJean-Cap-Ferrat, France. Following a welcome dance party in nearby Monte Carlo and a rehearsal dinner the next night, Rachel and Andrew began their wedding day at 7 a.m. with a dip in the Mediterranean Sea. “Even if the day got wild, we at least had that moment together and it was really special,” says the bride. With Rachel wearing Oscar de la Renta, the two exchanged vows before 300 friends, under a chuppah framed by floral ribbons. After alfresco cocktails, dinner followed in a tent laden with romantic, overgrown floral arrangements by Thierry Boutemy. “We wanted it to feel like A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” says Rachel. Later, guests kept dancing into the night at a Moroccan-themed

A truly modern romance, Los Angelesbased stylist Ashley Furnival and metalfabrication company owner Christopher Hench met via Instagram while he was living in New York. Virtual likes turned to actual phone calls and an IRL visit. “We fell in love over a long weekend,” says Ashley, who counts Rodarte, Vogue and Kirsten Dunst as clients. “He had his things shipped from New York, and we’ve been together ever since.” A little more than two years later, they were engaged, choosing Joshua Tree for their nuptials because it was the site of one of their first romantic weekends and—even more importantly—the place where Ashley had spread some of her father’s ashes after his passing. Christopher and Ashley became husband and wife at their friend’s 20-acre property on a mountain preserve, Blackbird Ranch, as more than 100 guests sat on hay bales covered with Mexican blankets

When Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard first met at a party in fall 2016, there was an immediate connection between the model and the New York Giants wide receiver. “He politely approached me, and I instantly felt his vibe,” remembers Chanel. “It didn’t take long for us to know we had something very special.” Just over a year later, on Chanel’s 27th birthday, Sterling set up a candlelit pathway at their waterfront New Jersey abode and got down on one knee. With the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop, and family and friends hiding nearby for a surprise bash, she said “yes.” Chanel and Sterling—who are expecting their first child in August—chose The Beverly Hills Hotel near the bride’s hometown of Los Angeles for their March wedding, arranged in just three months by planner Mindy Weiss. “Chanel really came in with a vision,” says Weiss. “She wanted it to feel like vintage romance. Nothing too over the top.” Long-stem Tibet roses lined the aisle for the tented garden ceremony—“as if they were growing right up from the ground,” says Weiss—leading to an arch of billowy white blooms, including peonies and hydrangeas. “Our plan went something like, ‘If we have the weekend free in the next couple of months, let’s do it,’” says Alyssa Miller, describing the laissez-faire approach she and singer-songwriter Cameron Avery took to nail down a wedding date. Cameron and Alyssa, who is a musician, model and founder of the vintageinspired luggage line Pilgrim, shared two other imperatives: They wanted a secluded, private venue with no curfew. Serendipitously, in short order the Hollywood Hills-based couple booked the offthe-beaten-path 1880 Union Hotel in tiny Los Alamos (just north of Solvang) right before Cameron, a member of the Australian bands Tame Impala and The Growl, started the first leg of a solo European tour opening for the Arctic Monkeys. The celebration came together on the fly. “We planned it so quickly, all of our friends were such a part of this,” says Alyssa. “My friends gave speeches and did the flowers; his friends played and officiated. We just went for it and we really relied on them.” As the couple and their guests took over the small hotel, Alyssa credits her friend Emily Buckner, the Brooklyn-based founder of Flwr Studio, with weaving together the look of the ceremony and tune-filled reception by artfully arranging long-stemmed Californiagrown blooms and ivy vines. The details of the bride’s gown inspired Buckner, who says she opted for delicate stems to complement its intricate lacework. The couple met less than a year ago at a friend’s New York bar where Alyssa was singing, so Cameron’s mic grab during Arctic Monkeys’ frontman Alex Turner’s rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” (temporarily halting the couple’s first dance) brought things full circle. “Everyone felt so involved. Moon Juice founder Amanda Chantal Bacon expected an immediate connection with a soul mate. “My famous last words were, ‘I’ll know in less than a second if it works with a person or not,’ ” she wryly confesses while noting she developed a friendship over seven years with indie drummer and songwriter Gregory Rogove before they paired up. “We went to Standing Rock together,” explains the Rustic Canyon resident, who collected medical supplies last year at her three Los Angeles juice shops for camps near the Dakota Access pipeline. “I bundled everything up to deliver it and Gregory said he’d come with me,” she adds. “That night, in North Dakota, there was that moment. We were both hit really hard… and we fell in love. It was seven years [after meeting], but almost in an instant.” Less than a year later, they got engaged at the top of a Kings Canyon waterfall, and planned the wedding particulars on the trail’s descent. Amanda and Gregory, who has spent years touring with acts including Devendra Banhart before settling in Venice, decided on an intimate celebration in which Amanda’s 6-yearold son, Rohan, would play an integral part in the planning. “Rohan kept referring to it as ‘his wedding,’ ” she reveals.

Feature TBD A few years after they started dating, Christy Baird and Brian Doxtator launched LOHO Bride, a modern, unconventional brick-and-mortar in San Francisco’s Nob Hill (LOHO stands for “League of Her Own”). Since then, Christy, who runs the day-to-day operations at the original location and a second, flagship outpost in Los Angeles (where the couple is now based), has helped hundreds of brides assemble their wedding looks. So when Brian proposed atop a bluff in Santa Cruz, she admits, “I can’t say I didn’t feel pressure; owning two bridal stores was a blessing and a curse.” Thankfully, the venue was an easy choice. The iconic midcentury estate of the late composer Frederick Loewe in Palm Springs made for the perfect backdrop to their minimalist autumnal soiree. Spoiled for choice, Christy was able to live out multiple fashion fantasies over the course of the two-day celebration. “I got to be five different LOHO brides. It was heaven!” she says.

Paul Simon’s The Rhythm of the Saints album played as guests found their seats along modern tablescapes punctuated with delicate ikebana-style centerpieces. Dancing commenced in the sunken living room before guests were given headphones for a silent disco due to the early noise curfew. Christy emerged one last time in a bold Houghton reflective skirt and bodysuit with

First came the fairy-tale romance: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met on a blind date; he designed her engagement ring using diamonds that had belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana; then he called her his “best friend” in a TV interview following the engagement. The Californian actor didn’t just win Prince Harry’s heart, she won over the whole world—just like the princess of Wales did before her. The wedding itself was notable as much for the sweeping elegance of the bride’s Givenchy gown as it was for the needle-moving ceremony. born Bishop Michael Curry (and not the Archbishop of Canterbury) delivered an impassioned sermon on the power of love, and Oprah Winfrey sat among the guests.
