Founder’s Letter
As I write this letter at the beginning of a new year, I have new beginnings on my mind. And, fittingly, it’s a mentality that can also be applied to couples who are about to embark on a new journey. When two people come together and make the decision to build a life in tandem, it is a beautiful thing. But the process to memorialize this union can come with strife and, at times, stress, too. It is our hope that this issue of C Weddings can alleviate that a bit, thanks to our meticulously edited roundups of the best in all wedding-related categories. It comes down to this: it is your day. And while we aren’t suggesting you become a bridezilla (or groomzilla), we are suggesting you take this moment to make sure the celebration is really about the two of you. Speaking from experience—while my wedding was beyond magical with special touches that people still mention to this day, the majority of the guests were my parents’ friends. If I were to do it again, I would change the ratio and make sure the audience was full of people I knew and loved to bear witness. Taking what you, as a couple, want into account will only make the event that much more personal and memorable. In my opinion, meticulous planning for your wedding is a must (feel free to keep this issue at hand as your reference guide!) so you can then let go the day of—and just enjoy! With new beginnings comes a world of possibilities…the road ahead lies at your feet. Where it will take you both is anyone’s guess but not knowing is half the fun and, most importantly, you have a co-pilot for the adventure!

What’s Hot As Julie Simon preps exquisite tortes for her eponymous cake company, she may be just as likely to consult images of paintings by Dutch old masters as she is to reference her own recipe playbook. The former media executive, who got her start as a singer-songwriter (following in the footsteps of her aunt, musician Carly Simon, and mother, Lucy, a Broadway composer), began baking as a child, acing pastries before delving into intricate sugar art inspired by visits to European food halls, including those at London department store Harrods. Now she’s teamed up with friend, entrepreneur and philanthropist Gillian Wynn—they met while studying at Yale—to create bespoke confections that evoke the fantastical flower arrangements of 17th-century painters.
“There’s movement, life among their blooms, and also insects and butterflies,” explains Simon, whose handmade exotic bouquets take form with sugar paste, edible paints and petal dust (edible pastels ground into a fine powder). Wynn points out that Simon perfected her baking before foraying into decorating, developing creations like orange hazelnut tortes with praline buttercream and dark chocolate ganache, lemon tortes with blackberry curd, and brown sugar vanilla cake with salted caramel buttercream to pair with her enchanting designs. Simon’s sugar flowers may evoke ephemeral blooms, but preserved under a glass cloche, the toppers offer a stunning post-wedding alternative to frozen cake. juliesimoncakes.com. • EL I ZA B ET H VA R N EL L

From left: A seamless indoor-outdoor reception designed by BASH PLEASE. In Napa Valley, San Francisco florist STUDIO MONDINE created airy ikebana-style centerpieces in custom-made ceramic vessels.
After helping produce dozens of issues of C Weddings (not to mention planning her own nuptials), contributing editor Kelsey McKinnon decided to pen the ultimate idea book for design-savvy couples heading down the aisle. Modern Wedding (Artisan, $40) dives deep into every category—stationery, fashion, tablescape design, menu planning, reception decor, gifting and logistics— with examples from impeccable weddings that radiate what McKinnon calls “that quintessential California spirit where old ideas effortlessly mix with the new.” The book features a torrent of previously unpublished work from West Coast luminaries, including the title’s principal photographers, Lauren and Abby Ross; in-demand planners (Bash Please, Laurie Arons, Yifat Oren); and florists (Hollyflora, Moon Canyon, Studio Mondine); as well as invaluable counsel from wedding stylist Cynthia Cook Smith, caterer Annie Campbell and gifting guru Simone LeBlanc. There’s also a happily ever after: “One of the most important takeaways,” says McKinnon, “is that you don’t need a six-figure budget to pull off something that is authentic and beautiful.” • P H OEB E D OH EN Y

Gregory adds, “Jeffrey couldn’t resist redecorating the house as well. I don’t know if planning a wedding and redecorating in four months is the best idea, but…” Soon enough, Jeffrey freshened up the house (paint, wallpaper, lighting and furniture all arrived in short order) and devised an after-hours dance barn from a former garden shed for the intimate 46-guest backyard wedding. San Francisco-based planner Jenna Lam, whom the couple discovered on Instagram, spearheaded a candlelit celebration that introduced the couple’s West Coast friends to the Hamptons, complete with a lobster bakeinspired dinner and a sudden summer storm that let up minutes before the ceremony. “I want to acknowledge that we’re lucky,” says Gregory. “None of us grew up in an era where it was a possibility for two guys to get married in a backyard legally.” • E.V. Inside, natural light floods through the wraparound paned windows; branching bubble chandeliers hang from the tall, exposed ceiling; and a brass-and-marble bar waits to beckon more than 200 seated guests. THE HARPER
“There was a need for a creative events space that had an aesthetic point of view but lets planners and stylists lend their twist to it,” says Steve Fortunato of Los Angeles-based Hospitality Collaborative, who opened The Harper in Costa Mesa last August. Fortunato, whose portfolio includes The Fig House in Highland Park, tapped L.A. interior designer Cliff Fong and Salt Landscape Architects, along with pieces from Portia de Rossi’s General Public fine art venture, to bring, in Fortunato’s words, “a sense of timelessness” to the venue. Fong blended provincial-style furniture and accessories with contemporary elements for an urbane, sophisticated vibe. Features include bride and groom suites, two gardens and a 6,300-square-foot interior party space that accommodates up to 300 guests. Hosting an event at The Harper also means having access to roomforty and Pharmacie, Hospitality Collaborative’s full-service culinary and beverage operations. 1618 Ohms Way, Costa Mesa, 323-254-4103; theharperoc.com. “In this day and age, the wedding day is something very different to how it’s [been] traditionally perceived,” says Stella McCartney. With her first bridal offering, Made with Love, the British designer appeals to a modern bride, proffering 17 styles, including a double-breasted tuxedo, a high-necked gown with a plunging back and a lace-embroidered jumpsuit. Honoring tradition and modernism, she balances classic couture fabrics (chiffon, lace) with sustainable viscose and adds a sweet touch with a sewn-in “something blue” tag bearing a personal message. Designing wedding gowns is “something that I feel very passionately about and is very close to my heart,” McCartney says. In creating his polished Tuxedo Collection, British designer Paul Smith took inspiration from longtime style muses like Patti Smith and Charlotte Rampling, as well as a bespoke tuxedo he tailored for model/actor/editor Małgosia Bela. Finessed in silk, wool and satin, the monochromatic designs include variations of the classic tuxedo jacket as well as a double-breasted opera coat, pussy-bow blouse and Derby shoes. “Now seems a very appropriate time to design a collection with a specific focus on tuxedoes for women,” says Smith, adding it “really felt like a natural evolution from the androgynous women’s designs that Paul Smith is known for.” 8221 Melrose Ave., L.A., 323-951-4800; paulsmith.com. Something Old, Something New Two years after taking the reins at Oscar de la Renta as co-creative directors, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia continue to shepherd the storied New York fashion house forward with their singular interpretation, balancing reverence with modernity. Being entrusted with a decades-old label is serious business, but Kim and Garcia, who also jointly own and run ready-to-wear brand Monse, have managed to win over both longtime customers and newer clients. Casting a wider net seems to be the driving force for the duo, who have now expanded their bridal selection to include demi-couture gowns. “For this collection, we were inspired by the diversity of the modern woman,” says Kim of the five embroidery-rich looks, which debuted as part of the Fall 2019 BAYOU WITH LOVE seven-ball ring, $78, brushed knife-edge band, $364, and high polish knife-edge band, $364.

When choosing the perfect dress, Kim says it’s wise to take into account your venue and, most importantly, your comfort. “We find that most California brides respond best to our tulle gowns due to the warm climate, whereas brides having a more traditional church or ballroom wedding often opt for silk-faille versions.” For the bride looking to make an elegant statement, there’s a sleeveless illusion-neck gown with cascading hand-embroidered flowers made of woven silk petals and encrusted buds. Before actor and singer Mandy Moore could even ask her glam squad about her November nuptials to musician and Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith, Ashley, Kristie and Jenn Streicher—the trio behind Beverly Hills beauty studio Striiike—had offered up their services. “I’m pretty sure it was me that insisted I do her wedding look! Like, possibly before her and Taylor were even getting married,” says hairstylist Ashley, who, along with her sisters, began working with and then befriended the This Is Us star four years ago. During a fitting for Mandy’s custom Rodarte wedding dress, Ashley and makeup artist Jenn quickly found their inspiration in the gown’s soft pink hue and ruffles. “It was very romantic and that’s how I wanted her makeup to be. Timeless but not boring,” says Jenn. “[Mandy and I] decided we’d do some sort of flowers in her hair after we saw Rodarte’s latest show; we’re very inspired by those sisters,” says Ashley, referring to the fresh roses in the coifs of the models who floated down the runway in designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s Spring 2019 collection. On the day of the intimate wedding held in the backyard of the couple’s Los Angeles home, Jenn and Ashley, together with stylist Kevin Ericson, readied the bride at home (Kristie shaped her
brows ahead of time). “I think it’s important to feel comfortable and relaxed during the process,” says Jenn, who turned to Tom Ford eyeshadow in Fuchsia Foil and Dior Lip Glow in Matte Raspberry to create Mandy’s dreamy makeup. After curling, brushing and gently backcombing the hair into a soft middle part (held in place by Garnier Fructis’ Extreme Control hairsrpay), Ashley carefully secured flowers from Mandy’s bridal bouquet into her hair. A lacy custom Rodarte veil, pinned in place like a crown, completed the look. Following the ceremony, festivities continued at The Fig House in Highland Park, where the bride opted for a Rosie Assoulin black dress, with ’70s glamour-inspired hair and makeup. An added bonus of having your makeup artist and hairstylist as wedding guests? “I brought a comb and hairspray to the party,” says Ashley. “She didn’t ask me to, but it’s hard to be there and not touch her up!” 9278 Civic Center Dr., Beverly Hills, 310205 2600; striiike.com. • L ES L EY M C K E N Z I E

ELEMENTS
Given that Daniel Tran and Kenney Duy are both veterans of the wedding industry, it stands to reason their fall nuptials would exhibit the kind of meticulousness that can only come from the union of two tastemaking palates. The Bay Area-based couple chose the historic, 100-year-old Kohl Mansion in Burlingame as their venue, excited by the prospect of pairing their modern sensibility with a backdrop of stately elegance. Daniel (the founder, editor-in-chief and creative director of wedding style magazine Geraldine and interior design-focused Hue Journal) and Kenney (a hairstylist
specializing in wedding day beauty and the owner of Fellini Salon in Carmel-bythe-Sea) tapped event planner Laurie Arons for the affair, and floral designer Sarah Winward for the ethereal arrangements. The day began with a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony, followed by a Western-style wedding ceremony and reception catered by Paula LeDuc Fine Catering & Events. Here, the finer points. 1. The Casa de Perrin place settings shared space with centerpieces comprising lunaria, rice flowers, blushing bride protea, sedum and various grasses. 2. Guests sat down for a candlelit dinner for 96 in the Kohl Mansion’s Great Hall. 4. “They wanted the ceremony arrangements to feel light and ‘frothy,’” says Winward. “We used rice flower and lunaria to make little clouds along the back of the aisle.” 5. Ellen Bennett and Casey Caplowe’s first date was to Burning Man, so it’s fitting that their November nuptials eschewed a traditional ballroom for a weekend-long explosion of color, food and culture. After Good media group co-founder Casey proposed in September 2017 in front of the Grand Teton, the couple chose Mexico City for their destination wedding. “I brought Casey there as a surprise for his birthday a couple of years ago,” explains Ellen, who is the founder and CEO of Los Angeles-based apron company Hedley & Bennett and is half Mexican. “I remember the awe he experienced, so we wanted it to be a full-blown cultural immersion.” While planning, they traveled there nine times, culminating in Casey’s 200-page presentation deck of inspiration for Mexico City-based planners Memora Eventos. In a weekend of surprises, 230 guests, including California culinary luminaries Nancy Silverton and Jonathan Waxman and Mexico City’s Enrique Olvera, were treated to a progressive feast. (All of the food was overseen by chef Daniela SotoInnes of Olvera’s NYC restaurants Cosme and Atla.) On Friday, they took brightly painted boats down canals to the Xochimilco neighborhood to sample local specialities such as Nicos chef Gerardo Vazquez Lugo’s soft-shell crab tortas. Between noshing, guests frolicked in a marigold field specially planted months prior by Memora Eventos. At the Saturday ceremony at Condesa

DF hotel, the wardrobe bucked tradition: Ellen’s bridal party wore boldly colored jumpsuits, while the bride donned a custom yellow-dipped Christian Siriano gown. Meanwhile, Casey’s fuchsia Paul Smith loafers dictated the wedding’s color palette, including Ellen’s bouquet of celosia by floral designer María Limón. Following the ceremony, officiated by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams founder Jeni Britton Bauer, and a celebratory shower of rose petals, guests headed to the grand Proyecto Público Prim. The 100-year-old greenery-filled space’s transformation was inspired by local markets, with food to match. After a toast rapped by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Oh Joy! founder Joy Cho, guests tucked into a second dinner around 10 p.m., which included chilaquiles and a chocolate dessert bar by local pastry chef José Ramón Castillo. “The weekend had an unfolding quality where people didn’t know what to expect next,” Casey says. Ellen adds, “Everyone left with 10 times more love than [when] they arrived: for the country, for each other and for new friends.” • KA R EN PAL ME R

Careyes, the sprawling private luxury resort town on the Pacific coast of Jalisco, Mexico, is—quite literally—the stuff of dreams. In 2006, inspired by a midslumber vision of a man and woman united by the universe under a setting sun, Italian-born founder Gian Franco Brignone commissioned two on-site art installations: La Copa del Sol, a huge cliffside concrete basin (the “woman”) and, a mile inland, the Piramidion, a stone pyramid (the “man”). At sunset, rays from the basin’s perforated windows illuminate the pyramid, uniting the two structures in a harmony of light. In August, Gian Franco’s dream played out anew when his son, Filippo, joined hands with fiancee Luisa González for a wedding ceremony inside La Copa del Sol at sunset. “It had never been done before,” says Filippo of the use of the dramatic venue, which is accessible by a treehouse ladder and features pristine acoustics.

The couple invited 350 of their nearest and dearest for a three-day celebration spread across the resort, including Friday night cocktails at Sol De Oriente Villa, a magnificent marigold-colored estate which features Careyes’ signature blend of Mediterranean and Mexican design influences, not to mention a 360-degree infinity pool overlooking the Pacific. A chance meeting as apprentices on a Santa Cruz farm led Corralitos-based florist Katie Chirgotis and Jacob Wolf Nelson to scale a 130-foot redwood within the Pogonip reserve on their first date. Inseparable thereafter, the couple moved to Barcelona, then Oakland before landing on a plot of land in Santa Cruz County, where they decided to build a small-scale farm of their own. Katie, a Virginia native and the founder of Eothen flower studio, says Jacob proposed in the same tree five years after their initial climb. “When we got to the top, he pulled out a velvet box we both had to hold because we were shaking so hard,” she says. Fittingly, the couple assembled friends and family, including an array of Bay Area creatives, at Henry Miller Memorial Library and its adjacent redwood grove for their Big Sur wedding, held the day after summer solstice. Before dawn, the couple hiked to a coastal jetty, reciting vows with priestess Maria Talbot of Namastemadre to the beat of her ceremonial chanting and drumming. “What better time to begin a new chapter than early morning when the sun rises after solstice,” reasons Katie. “All of our senses were lit up. One side of the jetty was calm and flat, the other side was roiling, with waves crashing. There were two different energies on either side of us.”

Later, they tucked into a farmer’s market-driven dinner from Scribe Winery chef Emma Lipp. After sunset, dozens of prisms tied to the library deck’s persimmon tree cast rainbow rays that danced across the white gardenias in the bride’s hair. “When anyone hugged me, there was this crush of fragrance,” says Katie. •

When Jonathan Mummolo first proposed to Lauren Wright, they kept their news under wraps for 24 hours. It happened one evening after Lauren came home from work to find Jonathan playing the guitar. “I didn’t think much of it, because he plays all the time,” she recalls. He then presented her with a ring he had designed in secret with her sister, Stephanie. “It was sweet and private—just the two of us,” says Lauren. “We wanted to hold onto the moment for ourselves.” It’s understandable, as the couple often finds themselves the focus of attention: Lauren is an author, TV personality, and a lecturer in politics and public affairs at Princeton University, and Jonathan is a Washington Post reporter-turnedassistant professor at Princeton. Their packed schedules meant their on-andoff courtship spanned three years—and both coasts. They first met at Georgetown, where they were both Ph.D. students, with Jonathan eventually heading off to Stanford where he finished his studies. After a three-year engagement (Lauren was at work on her first book, Jonathan on his dissertation), the location for their wedding was an easy choice. “I’ve always wanted to get married at my parents’ home in Rancho Santa Fe,” says Lauren. “I couldn’t imagine anywhere more special.” She enlisted the help of event planner Yifat Oren, founder of Oren Co, and the team got to work transforming the Wrights’ sprawling residence. Because Lauren’s personal style leans minimalist—she opted for a classic, strapless Oscar de la Renta gown for the ceremony—and her professional schedule is so full, she let Yifat and her mother spearhead

After road tripping up to Wallowa County, Ore., for a winter getaway, San Francisco-based couple Zai Divecha and Phil Reyneri settled into a cabin and decided to test out the New York Times article “The 36 Questions That Lead to Love.” “We got to number 11: ‘Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible,’” recalls Phil, who was friends with Zai for years before they dated. “I told my story up to the present day, but added a future event—that I married the love of my life.” He proposed with a ring whose Old European-cut diamond once belonged to Zai’s late Indian grandmother. The artist couple—he’s a designer who works with technology; she’s a sculptor who works with paper—tied the knot two and a half years later, over a weekend-long celebration in San Gregorio last May. Shelter Co. realized their camping theme, outfitting the hilly grounds of Redgate Ranch with 71 canvas sleeping tents and wood fire pits. During the three days, 130-plus campers enjoyed early-morning vinyasa yoga, group hikes, henna sessions, and amenities like an espresso bar and an Airstream sauna. “We tried to offer the elements that make for our ideal weekend trip—nature, quality time with loved ones, some exercise and self-care,” says Zai. At the ceremony, the parents performed an aarti, a Hindu ceremonial blessing, prior to Phil and Zai (in a couture Sabyasachi sari) exchanging vows and garlands before 181 guests. Later, the reception featured a massive choreographed
Bollywood-style dance with nearly 70 of their guests, led by the bride’s sister, Mia. The entire weekend was, as Zai recalls, “the perfect blend of both Californian and Indian notes.” • RENTALS Bright Event Rentals, Theoni Collection, Found Rentals, La Tavola Fine Linen, R&R Event Rentals ENTERTAINMENT Kelyn Crapp, DJ Asha CATERING Fogcutter, Componere Fine Catering HAIR AND MAKEUP Kelly Jo Makeup and Hair INVITATIONS Zargosy STYLING Bridelan India

When Hayley Bloomingdale met Alexander “Dada” Stileman at a mutual friend’s party in Cape Town, he made her laugh right away. It was a sign of more good times to come, and the Moda Operandi communications director and her British beau, founder of London’s Stileman Lighting Design, announced their engagement last February. On a hike in the Lake District, Dada proposed with a flawless, customdesigned Jessica McCormack ring—“I wanted to start with an almost deco style as the basis, but with Jessica’s help the end result was truly above expectation,” he says. Soon Hayley and Dada, who reside
full time across the pond, were planning an October wedding in Santa Barbara. “I definitely wanted something that reflected how I grew up and wanted to share my love of California with our friends, especially our British friends,” says Hayley, who hails from Pacific Palisades. Event producer Stefanie Cove and Company designed the weekend’s festivities, which kicked off with a fiesta-themed welcome dinner (complete with mariachi band, tacos and tequila) on Hotel Californian’s rooftop. The next afternoon, Hayley and Dada exchanged vows before 170 guests at the historic Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church—

Alexis Alagem, a creative exec on Netflix’s Original Series team, met WME agent Ryan Draizin through a setup in 2016. Of their first date, at a Century City sports bar, Alexis recalls, “Ryan chose a place where he could watch the Dodgers game.” As it turns out, the two were also watching each other, because sparks flew. Eight months later, Ryan proposed on the iconic staircase of the French Riviera’s Hotel du Cap-EdenRoc during an Alagem family holiday. The couple immediately enlisted Los Angeles-based Stefanie Cove to bring the luxe, floral-festooned nuptials of their dreams to life at Meadowood Napa Valley. The stunning wine region, the bride says, is her “favorite place in the world.” The weekend kicked off with a cozy family dinner at Archetype in St. Helena, followed by an alfresco rehearsal evening at chef Christopher Kostow’s hotspot The Charter Oak. The celebrations continued with the wedding ceremony, held beneath
the trees (Meadowood’s swans even made an appearance), and later, a Moroccanthemed dance party. “I really wanted to have my dinner and my dancing separate,” Alexis says of the reception, during which she changed from her Elie Saab gown to a simple, satin J. Mendel sheath for dancing. “And being in Napa where the food and the wine is so good, I wanted to make it an amazing meal for everyone.” The couple’s 275 guests—including a bevy of bridesmaids in blush-colored frocks—watched them dance the hora as they were joined together by a napkin the bride’s older brother saved from the South of France restaurant where their engagement dinner took place. • HAIR Robert Lopez MAKEUP Tammy Pham SHOES Valentino FLOWERS Kathleen Deery Design DESSERT Sift Dessert Bar

“Carmel holds her favorite childhood memories,” says Rob Runkel of his college sweetheart, Allie Brody, whom he wed last summer amid the redwood groves of the Santa Lucia Preserve. The Bash Please-produced weekend began with a barefoot welcome party in the sand featuring cozy day beds, blankets, live-fire paella and a perfect sunset. “It’s a sacred and beautiful destination—one of those ‘get there fast and take it slow’ places,” says Allie. Here, the Palo Alto-based couple’s favorite Carmel haunts. • Cottage of Sweets is a magical place right near the beach. cottageofsweets.com. • Carmel Wine Walk bythe-Sea takes you to about 14 wine-tasting rooms. Our favorite is Holman Ranch. winewalkcarmel.com. • Tancredi & Morgen is a must-visit for home goods and specialty items. tancrediandmorgen.com. • Carmel River State Beach for the views—perfect for a beach party. • Baja Cantina & Grill has the best chips and salsa in the world— not to mention their margaritas and funky vibes. carmelcantina.com. • Folktale Winery and Vineyards for the outdoor seating and live music. folktalewinery.com.

Newlyweds JACQUES BERGERAC and GINGER ROGERS at LA QUINTA RESORT & CLUB, A WALDORF ASTORIA RESORT (formerly La Quinta Hotel).
Ginger Rogers and Jacques Bergerac, 1953 Famous for being, among other things, the woman who did everything Fred Astaire did, but backward and in high heels, screen legend Ginger Rogers met dashing French actor Jacques Bergerac while on vacation in France in 1952. The two tied the knot a year later on Feb. 7, 1953, before a waterfall in the vintage casita section of the grounds at La Quinta Hotel, celebrating later with a reception at the Racquet Club. Bergerac, 25, was Rogers’ fourth husband (she was 41 at the time) but not her last; the two divorced four years later. “When two people love each other, they don’t look at each other,
they look in the same direction,” Rogers once said. The glamorous pair wasn’t the only Hollywood royalty to flock to the property: It wasn’t long after Walter H. Morgan opened the luxury getaway in 1926 that the likes of Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Clark Gable were taking up residence. Today, 93 years on, couples continue to stage their own big days at the lush 45-acre La Quinta Resort & Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, dotted with venues ranging from historic ballrooms to Spanish courtyards and surrounded by the majestic Santa Rosa Mountains. laquintaresort.com. • M.G.
