Founder’s Letter
The question has been popped … and accepted! Now, the real work lies ahead: incorporating two different peoples’ lives into one magnificent day. It is one thing to have dreamed up a wedding in your head, conceivably from the time you were little (whether or not both parties admit to this), but it is a whole other thing to actually make it work for everyone involved. The good news is that couples today — and, in particular, couples in California — have more options than ever for curating a wedding weekend that is reflective of who you are and the intentions you want to set for yourselves as you move forward into this new exciting chapter. Whether you envision a wedding in a church or in the redwoods, or whether you want to be married by a shaman or a rabbi or your best friend, all possibilities are within reach. I’d argue that when it comes to getting married today, nothing really falls into the category of alternative — love can and should be expressed in whatever way best suits you. In California, there is an abundance of breathtaking backdrops against which to say “I do,” and an outdoor setting is often key to setting the mood. But where? Beach, desert, mountain, vineyard — each is an idyllic option that will take your theme in a distinct direction. At C Weddings, we aim to highlight some of the most beautiful, creative nuptials celebrated in the last season to serve as your inspirational idea-starters. We also scour the state to bring you the latest and greatest in fashion, jewels, locations, vendors and decor trends. Because if you only get one chance to make a lasting, heartfelt impression, you might as well go for the gold in this most golden of states.

JASMINE DE LUNG
The reign of the naked cake may be coming to an end. In its place? One-ofa-kind confections à la the avant-garde, elaborate masterworks of fine art cake designer Jasmine de Lung. Though, you might be surprised to learn that the talent’s creative philosophy is rooted not in the pursuit of perfection, but rather, in the limitations of her medium. “I love including elements of surrender in the design and crafting process,” says de Lung, who, in addition to running Jasmine Rae Cakes in San Francisco, teaches a handful of technique and business workshops internationally every year. Some of her distressed textures, rough stone effects, “torn-paper” ruffles and other signatures “were developed out of the conditions of my studio, such as [it] being very dry,” she says. “It’s always interesting to bring my teaching to a humid climate and be forced to appreciate what is then possible.” Inside her subtly sweet gateaux, nuanced ingredients with unique flavor combinations shine through, such as chai tea, feta, burnt caramel and roasted apples; and vanilla bean, cinnamon and rose. In the end, as is the case with the best artists, the confines of de Lung’s practice only serve to create more arresting results. Cakes from $3,000. jasmineraecakes.com. • AN USH J. BE N LIYAN

Since its launch nearly 30 years ago, home textiles label Coyuchi has been setting the industry standard with its dedication to sustainability and quality organic materials. The San Francisco-based brand is now introducing a game-changing way of experiencing its luxe coastal-inspired bedding and towels. Coyuchi for Life, a circular subscription service for home fabrics — perfect for ecoconscious newlyweds — allows customers to replenish their linens every six, 12 or 24 months. “Pampas grass is becoming a popular alternative to fresh flowers in weddings — there’s so much you can do with it,” says PAMPAS PEOPLE founder AYLIN SEVGILI.
High Notes Los Angeles-based Altered Plates specializes in tastefully integrating cannabis into formal events, from the food and beverage to the decor. “We are working hard to change the perception of the plant and normalize it to new and cannacurious users by presenting it in a beautiful way,” co-founder Rachel Burkons says. Her take on an elevated wedding? Offering signature drinks crafted with CBD honey simple syrup; adorning bouquets with fresh or dried cured cannabis flowers; and working with her co-founder and brother, chef Holden Jagger, on cannabis pairings for a unique fine dining experience. alteredplatesevents.com. A.J.B. “Greeting your guests with beautifully appointed joint trays gives them a safe space to explore cannabis,” says RACHEL BURKONS of ALTERED PLATES.
GRASS ROOTS Aylin Sevgili loved pampas grass before she knew what it was called. “My Google search was: ‘hairy beige plant,’ ‘tall feathery plant,’ ‘Dr. Seuss-like plant,’” she says. After relocating from Washington, D.C., to Venice last year, she found that sourcing the elusive ingredient was nearly as tricky as nailing down its name, until she happened upon a bumper crop growing wild in a family friend’s Oxnard backyard. Soon after that, Sevgili launched her Etsy shop (and Instagram by the same name), Pampas People, and discovered a nearinsatiable demand for the wrapped and ready-to-ship bundles. With requests coming in from brides, florists, event planners and brand reps, she frequently sells out. So what is it about pampas that has the wedding and design world in its thrall? “It’s a showstopper,” says Sevgili, who also works in social media at a digital marketing agency. She adds, “A beautiful, unique-looking plant that requires no water, no maintenance and zero upkeep? Yes please!” @pampaspeople. M.G.

A COUPLE CONJURES A CALIFORNIA SUNSET IN THEIR BIG-DAY DETAILS Brilliant Earth (started by one of his friends from Stanford business school). “I was elated,” says Kathryn, who plans to expand her online tabletop brand Year & Day into new categories later this year. Next came the pair’s greatest venture yet — planning a wedding for 160 guests in just five months, with many coming from as far away as Matt’s native Canada. “We wanted to celebrate the natural beauty of California and especially the magic of the coastline,” Kathryn explains. For the ceremony at Ventana Big Sur, with the majestic redwoods as backdrop, Kathryn wrapped one of her late father’s monogrammed handkerchiefs around her lily-of-the-valley bouquet to symbolize him walking her down the aisle. After saying “I do,” the couple invited guests to join them in the reception tent decorated in “vibrant pinks, oranges and yellows reminiscent of our best sunsets,” the bride shares. Following a surprise choreographed dance number by the bride and groom, everyone enjoyed dinner, Momofuku Milk Bar birthday cake and dancing to the sounds of Encore from West Coast Music long into the night. “We couldn’t get people to stop dancing,” Matt says. “Kathryn gets the credit for picking the band.” • MARIE LOOK

When it came to dreaming up her own wedding gown, Cydney Morris — the designer and co-founder of Los Angeles-based label and custom bridal boutique Stone Cold Fox — envisioned an amalgam of “the Victorian era and classic Brigette Bardot movies,” she says. In collaboration with her friend Laura Vassar of Brock Collection, Cydney created a sheer-lined gown in white corded French lace with a boned bodice, scalloped peplum and pale pink ribbon straps to wear to marry her Australian beau, Ollie Edwards, in Sydney earlier this year. “I found an actual antique veil from the 1800s,” Cydney says of her finishing touch. “It was the perfect look to express who I was as a bride.” thestonecoldfox.com. • A.J.B.

Wedding planning can be fraught with drama, and when it comes to preparations for the big day, brides need all the good juju they can get. With crystals having a mainstream moment, it’s easier than ever to bring Mother Earth’s revitalizing vibes into your beauty rituals. Whether you’re a die-hard believer or a casual admirer, there’s really no downside to adding a little magic into the mix. When incorporated as an ingredient in skincare, the minerals in crystals are said to physically enhance a product’s benefits and are beloved by devotees for their purported energizing virtues. “Our ancestors intuitively knew crystals could bring about energetic shifts and changes, whether worn as adornment, kept in close proximity or used in ritual,” explains Los Angeles-based Colleen McCann, a shamanic energy medicine practitioner and the author of Crystal RX. Whole crystals, such as black tourmaline and lepidolite, are thought to help purify energy prewedding, keeping you calm and focused by ensuring your auric field is cleansed. •

What’s the difference between gemstones and crystals? Gemstones are semiprecious (i.e. amber) or precious (i.e. diamonds). There is, of course, a whole scientific explanation about gemstones’ chemical compositions and crystals structures, but my general rule of thumb is that a gemstone is something you would set into a piece of jewelry and most everything else is a crystal. They’re both energetically beneficial and carry healing energy. Why add crystals to wedding prep? Weddings are a time of celebration, but they can be chaotic and stressful. This is why we created a Bride Box, loaded with crystals whose energy is believed to inspire love, peace, hope and bliss, along with palo santo and a santal candle in a beautiful oak keepsake box, to help the bride stay centered. For a DIY option, I tell my brides to put a piece of pink Himalayan quartz in the places in their homes where they do self-care because feminine energy is receptive. Which crystals or gemstones are best to incorporate into your wedding beauty? Hands down, rose quartz, the stone of unconditional love. And celestite, for “something blue” — it keeps you calm. Pink Himalayan quartz is the stone of the divine feminine and selenite protects and ushers in peace. Lastly, clear quartz is programmable: Set your intention for your big day with this crystal, and it will help you call in that vision.

In June 2016, when animator Justin Bakies suggested over Tinder that Los Angeles-based graphic designer, art director and founder of lifestyle blog Designlovefest Bri Emery have dinner with him — a homemade meal of steak au poivre — Bri was initially unimpressed. “I thought, how pretentious,” she recalls with a laugh. They opted instead for drinks at Silver Lake bar Thirsty Crow followed by midnight pizza, and the rest is history. After dating for two years, Justin proposed in their Highland Park-area home with a custom, art deco-inspired ring by Kathryn Bentley. The pair chose New Orleans (the groom’s hometown) for their “southern Gatsby”-flavored
destination wedding (at which they served steak au poivre), brimming with inventive details, including pampas grass-fueled florals, a traditional second line parade, a silent disco and more. 1. For a twist on the typical photo booth accessories, Of the Flowers L.A. floral designer Felisa Funes created Mardis Gras-style masks using black-dyed and bleached pampas grasses with white dried wildflower embellishments. 2. Table centerpieces highlighted sculptural king protea alongside vases of whimsical pink pampas grass, cups of brown-dyed tulips, and crystal balls — a nod to New Orleans’ tradition of mysticism. 3. from lunaria; preserved Italian ruscus; straw flower; bleached amaranths, fern, yarrow and pampas grass; and other small flowers. 4. Lovegood Wedding & Event Rentals’ Gypsy Mobile Bar Trailer served guests Champagne before the second line parade that followed the ceremony; later the bar was transformed into a station for old-fashioneds. 5. For the invites, Mike Willcox incorporated symbols significant to the couple, including their zodiac constellation (both are Aquarius). Nick Misani did the hand lettering printed by Czar Press in gold foil on vellum. 6. Made by Bittersweet Confections, the marbleized almond cake took its hexagon shape from the bride’s ring. •

Burning Love SPARKS FLY AT THE ROMANTIC VINEYARD WEDDING OF ANNA GRAHAM AND KYLE THORPE
Menu
After being matched on a dating app, sparks flew when Anna Graham and Kyle Thorpe first met in person over a meal at Mercado in Downtown L.A. and discovered they were both raised in South Africa. When Anna — a fashion consultant and the daughter of Jenny Graham, a creative director of clothing company Velvet by Graham and Spencer — and Kyle, an advisor at a fintech startup, began planning their wedding, the quest to create a fun, flavorful menu that their international guests would enjoy was a top priority. Longtime fans of the Santa Ynez Valley — which they visited on their first trip together — the couple insisted on spotlighting local fare at their celebration, held at Grassini Family Vineyards, and preparing it in a way that ignited a sense of community and allowed for interactivity between their guests and the chef. They enlisted live fire expert Ethan Mantle from Componere Fine Catering to tend to the meal’s lamb, chicken and fish, which were roasted throughout the wedding’s cocktail hour leading up to dinner. “We knew we wanted to create a sensory experience for our guests, and the live fire cooking was the perfect way to see, smell and then taste the meal we created,” Anna explains. During a relaxed outdoor ceremony under a bowed branch chuppah overlooking the grape vines, Kyle wore a navy J. Crew tux and a blue and red Rolex Pepsi watch (gifted from Anna the night before) while

Anna donned an ethereal Martha Medeiros gown. “It was Martha’s first custom dress in the United States,” Anna says. “The lace was handmade by a group of women artisans from Brazil’s Alagoas village. They worked on the lace for 18 months and it took three months to put the dress together.” Anna carried a brooch that belonged to her late grandmother in her dried, white wildflower-inspired bouquet. At the cocktail hour, the 170 guests enjoyed bites of beet-cured kampachi, morel and ricotta toast, halibut ceviche with candied lemon and vegan chicharrones, with tomatillo, avocado and Fresno chile pepper and sipped spicy mezcal margaritas. Dinner was served on a stunning 200-foot-long communal table decorated with local citrus and lively, naturalistic bouquets that San Francisco florist Marigold loosely placed within handformed ceramic vases. After the newlyweds’ first dance to Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars,” they cut into three cakes from The Solvang Bakery — chocolate, vanilla and red velvet. Before the party disbanded, guests were treated to gourmet sliders with a side of fries and glasses of espresso martinis — a fittingly delicious end to the night. “From day one, we knew our guests would be in for a culinary treat,” Anna says. • CAROLYN MEERS

They met in a karaoke bar in L.A.’s Koreatown. Three and a half years later, Esther Song and Rudy Lopez Negrete decamped to Mexico’s central highlands for a cross-cultural union at Rosewood San Miguel de Allende. The Los Angeles-based couple (she is Tory Burch’s vice president of VIP public relations and partnerships, he is head of multicultural at CAA-affiliated agency Observatory) dreamed up a Korean-Mexican fiesta. With planner Karen Morlet, they brought it to life in view of the city’s evocative skyline, punctuated by its famed pink cathedral, the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. They selected the destination for their weekend-long wedding in part because of Rudy’s fond childhood memories: In his youth, the groom roamed the city’s cobblestone-lined streets while his father oversaw Mexico’s tourism bureau. Cristina Ehrlich, Thomas Carter Phillips and Lee Harris, and actors Amber Heard and Zoey Deutch, flew in to toast Rudy and Esther. The pair — true epicures at heart, with a joint mantra that includes “spice on everything, and wine and tequila with anything,” according to Esther — began the weekend with a traditional callejoneada processional through the city’s winding streets, led by a tequila burro wearing a tabletop saddle. At the end of the ceremony, after Heard surprised the couple with an emotional reading of a Pablo Neruda poem in English and Spanish, Rudy and Esther bowed to their parents per Korean tradition. Later, guests sipped spirits curated by the groom at the reception. The bride and groom also reveled in their success at lobbying the city to stretch its party curfew, extending the reception until 5 a.m., fueled by late-night chilaquiles and churros. “I changed into ruffled tennis shoes and we danced all night,” Esther says. • E L I ZA B E T H VAR N E L L

On an impromptu trip to Big Sur to celebrate six years together, Ness Saban, an independent filmmaker, proposed to Brynn Jones, a model and the owner of Hollywood-based vintage clothing boutique Aralda. An almost halfway point between the couple’s home base of Los Angeles and Brynn’s native Portland, Ore., Big Sur presented the perfect setting for playing out their wedding imaginings. “We love to have fun and not take everything too seriously or do things traditionally,” Brynn says. “We turned to paintings as inspiration for our color palettes, and there were also references to a psychedelic take on Dr. Seuss and FernGully to explain the whimsy that we wanted.” Planners Yifat Oren and Emily Park were charged with bringing this dreamscape to life on a private cliffside estate. For the ceremony, a simple chuppah hung between two craggy, windswept trees at the edge of the ocean. Brynn came down the grassy aisle in a Monique Lhuillier dress adorned with butterflies and cascading ostrich feathers that she selected just 10 days before the wedding (a custom dress she planned on wearing didn’t pan out). “Full of tradition but not traditional” is how Laura Quicksilver, a movie producer, describes her Santa Ynez nuptials to Jonny Hausfater, a television producer and director. The L.A. natives first laid eyes on each other at a birthday party in 2012, when Jonny spotted Laura across the room and said to his friend, “That’s my wife.” (His friend demurred to introduce the two, asserting that Laura was out of his league.) It was almost 12 months before their paths actually crossed again, at another birthday party at Chateau Marmont. “I was there in a backwards hat and a denim jacket, and she was dressed in all black, and she walked up to me and she said, ‘I’m Laura Quicksilver. Are you ever going to introduce yourself?’” Jonny says. To further thicken the plot, on their first date, they discovered that their grandmothers had been best friends back in St. Louis. “[In Jewish tradition] it’s what they call beshert,” Laura explains. “Meant to be.” The two have been together ever since. Their wedding at Kestrel Park, a wine country estate with a French castle feel, was an homage to their families and their California roots. Laura walked down the sycamore-lined aisle in her grandmother’s vintage wedding dress (which Laura’s mother had also worn at her own ceremony), and Jonny accented his suit with his grandfather’s pocket handkerchief. They said their vows wrapped in Laura’s grandfather’s tallit (a Jewish prayer shawl) and drank from Jonny’s heirloom kiddush cup. It was the cue they needed to make their feelings for the future known;

six months later, they flew to Aaron’s hometown of Freeport, Maine, to tie the knot at town hall with Aaron’s father and niece, who served as witnesses. All the while, Lu’s vision for the bigger celebration they planned to host two months after saying “I do” began to unfold: “In Chinese culture, the reception can be an elaborate event, so I wanted to pay homage to that over-thetop grandeur while maintaining a sense of who we are,” she says. The affair took place at The Wheelhouse, an 80-acre artfilled desert oasis in Twentynine Palms. Guests enjoyed a five-course dinner of Imperial Beijing cuisine surrounded by bouquets of deep red garden roses and celosia, while the Orchid Quartet played music by Chopin and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The bride insisted on including an installation of Tanggu drums with numbers of good luck displayed on each of them, as well as a flag handpainted by her father, which served as a guidepost. Televisions displaying images of rose petals and rice floating in isolation were installed by the entrance. “Many friends told us they forgot to take photos because they were enraptured in the moment,” Lu says. • PLANNER The Lynden Lane Co. Three years after a four-hour first date at an Italian restaurant in New York’s East Village, Nina Tiari awoke to find her beau, Brazilian-born abstract painter João Salomão, kneeling beside their bed with a Soraya Silchenstedt-designed solitaire ring. “He got up at about 6 a.m. to get fresh flowers and cover the bed and our room in petals,” says Nina, an Iranian-American fashion designer whose eponymous label takes cues from her native California. In the lead-up to the big day, Nina scoured the Spring/Summer 2018 couture shows in search of the perfect dress, ultimately falling for a pale gray tulle Chanel gown with a lustrous beaded bodice. She collaborated with the French house’s haute couture team to reimagine the tea-length dress into a white bridal

number, adding two underskirts, a detachable train and two veils. In all, the final look required 1,020 hours of handiwork and 200 meters of tulle. Inspired by the gown, the duo (who recently relocated to Los Angeles) tapped Fancy That! Events’ Christine Zohrabians to produce a Marie Antoinette-indebted affair at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach. “We wanted to incorporate the grandeur, romance, decadence, pastels and natural wild flowers of that era,” Nina says. The open-air ceremony featured a traditional Persian sofreh — a table whose symbolic spread includes a mirror, honey and sugar cones — and a vow exchange, after which a dinner reception was hosted beneath a custom truss structure furnished with whitewashed wood tables. Later, the 250 guests retreated to the ballroom for a grand masquerade party accented with Viennese chandeliers and French-style petite pastries aplenty. There, a Brazilian samba troupe surprised the crowd with a performance to Madonna’s “Vogue.” The night, Nina says, was “a surreal, modern, romantic fantasy.” • CALLIGRAPHY Calligraphy Katrina RENTALS Revelry Event Designers SOFREH Elegant Sofreh Design ENTERTAINMENT Entertainment Plus Productions VIDEOGRAPHY White Rose Productions

RAQUEL BICKFORD ORANGES & CARLY SABER “The Sonoma Coast is a hidden gem,” says Roque Events (roqueevents.com) founder and executive producer Raquel Bickford Oranges, who, together with associate producer Carly Saber, designs romantically rustic weddings and events in the area and beyond. For the seaside nuptials of Holly Rose Faith and Ryan Buntain (shown left) in the small Sonoma town of Jenner, the Napa-based planners tapped their roster of unique local vendors, from vintners to floral studios. Here, Bickford Oranges and Saber share some of their go-to sources for a Sonoma Coast wedding. • Calligrapher Sheryl Kristie Chan at Blushtype creates stunning, cohesive event branding. @blushtype • Timber Cove is a fabulous retro resort with unforgettable views and amazing food. timbercoveresort.com. • With notes of floral rose petals and sassafras tea, Whetstone Wine Cellars’ Terra De Promissio pinot noir is an absolute favorite. whetstonewinecellars. com. • For each custom floral design concept we create for our clients, Emily Dreblow at Soulflower Design Studio takes our visions above and beyond what is expected. soulflowersf .com. • We are obsessed with Encore Events Rentals for their customer service and fresh rentals each season. encoreeventsrentals.com.

San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito reopened just in time for wedding season this year — 15 long months after tragic mudslides battered the storybook property — with three newly built cottages, a wine cellar and restored grounds. Among the first nuptials to christen the famous 1953 honeymoon hideaway of John and Jackie Kennedy was the elegant, starstudded union of actor Chris Pratt and JFK’s great niece, author Katherine Schwarzenegger. The couple asked Giorgio Armani to create looks befitting the dream-like setting, which is surrounded by 400-year-old olive trees
and lemon groves, and infused with scents of blooming jasmine, roses and lavender. For the ceremony, the legendary designer made Katherine a custom bustier column gown with a full skirt, which was paired with an heirloom tulle veil that belonged to her mother, Maria Shriver; Chris wore a striking midnight suit and vest — the bride’s something blue. After the intimate “I do’s,” the bride changed into a slinky ivory silk satin gown with delicately draped sleeves and a plunging back exuding old Hollywood glamour. En route to dinner, the couple paused on the stone-paved path for a kiss as newly minted husband and wife. • K E L SE Y M C K I N N O N
