founder’s letter
he first time the California sun hit my face the summer after we moved here, I was hooked! I was 16 and spent my days at the beach, hanging with friends until the sun set, watching the surfers, having bonfires in the sand and enjoying my newfound “California” status…no longer a Midwesterner. The thought of sunscreen didn’t cross my mind during those endless hours outside. All I was focused on was the freedom of being a teenager, living in this amazing state and
realizing I never had to leave! There’s something about those carefree summers that still puts a smile on my face. No worries, no stresses, just pure fun that all added up to some amazing memories. Unfortunately, my lack of sun prevention during those times did, in fact, come back to
haunt me. Recently, while at the dermatologist’s office, I had many a biopsy taken on some “questionable” moles. When I was warned they were precancerous and told I needed to be highly conscious of sun protection for the rest of my life, a little bit of my heart sank. How could I live here and not enjoy being outside? I love lunches alfresco, watching the sun set over the ocean, strolling my daughter around our neighborhood. And don’t even get me started on my guilty pleasure of reading magazines while lying out (a pastime that rarely seems to happen anymore because of my lack of free time). Thinking I would have to give it all up, I was a bit crushed. One of the reasons to live here is because we can do so many things outdoors (even if one isn’t a said “camper”). With a little behavior modification, I have learned I can still enjoy every minute in the Golden State. While I now read magazines in the shade, stroll my daughter covered head-to-toe in clothes and a hat and find the table in the courtyard restaurant with a huge umbrella over it, I haven’t stopped loving life in this beautiful place. I simply coat myself daily with SPF. And I even recently tried spray tanning, something I was a bit unsure of. The aftereffect was perfection. It brought me right back to those golden days of my Santa Barbara summers. (But when I sat down at a luncheon right after I had the procedure and one of my dear friends said, “Someone smells of a spray tan!,” I was a bit mortified, but fessed up right away. I didn’t realize the protocol of the procedure—needing to rinse off after application. If I ever get my nerve up to attempt it again, I now know the tricks!) As skin cancer is serious, I don’t mess around. I have adapted to my new way of life—even if I truly miss the carefree ways of my youth, devoid of SPF and any knowledge of the sun’s effects. In this, our Summer Issue, focused on all things fabulous in the great outdoors, I hope you enjoy your moment in the sun…even if it is with a chic hat, great shades and a slathering of sun protection. Happy Summer!
We’d love to hear from you

omehow, the new garden restaurant at Soho House actually surpasses the hype that preceded it. Part Tuscan villa, part French country house, with crisp English service thrown in for good measure, this oasis is 14 stories high and boasts a breathtaking view of L.A. Clearly, no detail was overlooked. The olive trees were lifted through the roof by crane, the flooring is sleek marble and the koi pond is positioned to perfectly reflect the California sun. Designed by Waldo Fernandez and Inner Gardens, the outcome is the ultimate vision of Soho House mastermind Nick Jones. In this case, membership really does have its privileges. sohohousewh.com. a
town famous for its kitsch, Las Vegas has long thrived on surreal mega-hotels and some strategically positioned pasties. But after a dismal 2009 tourist season, which left the strip dotted with dozens of uncertain development projects, Sin City raised the stakes. The winners of this round of resort roulette are doing so with award-winning architecture, internationally acclaimed chefs and museum-worthy art collections. Last year’s top hand clearly belonged to the $8.5 billion CityCenter (citycenter.com), an imposing architectural complex with six modern glass towers jutting from a dusty spot on the strip. A standout collection of contemporary art arranged throughout the compound includes pieces by Maya Lin, Henry Moore and Claes Oldenburg & Coosje van Bruggen. Among the 20 restaurateurs (with more on the way) who have set up shop are Michael Mina, Pierre Gagnaire and Jean-Philippe Maury, along with three-star Michelin chef Masayoshi Takayama, who made his Vegas debut this past spring with Bar Masa and Shaboo. CityCenter’s roster of internationally commissioned talent extends to architects, namely the Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed Mandarin Oriental (mandarinoriental.com), which boasts a luxurious tea lounge and authentic hammam spa. Lord Norman Foster’s non-gambling The Harmon Hotel (theharmon.com), the last piece of the CityCenter puzzle, is set to open later this year. In the constant battle of keeping up with the Joneses, hotel mogul Steve Wynn is never far behind. Last month, his Encore Beach Club (encorelasvegas.com) opened three pools, 30 private cabanas and, naturally, its own sandy beach. Eight of the luxury cabanas feature their own hot tubs and terraced balconies overlooking the strip. Just down the way, The Cosmopolitan (cosmopolitanlas vegas.com) condo hotel is finally taking shape after breaking ground in October 2005. The $3.9 billion project is slated to open later this year with an all-star culinary lineup headlined by L.A. favorites Comme Ça and STK, as well as two outposts from James Beard-winner José Andrés. Anchored by two 50story towers, the project reflects the growing trend away from the theme-based resorts of the ’90s and a decided turn toward luxury-driven hospitality. Initiated by the 2007 opening of the Palazzo (palazzolas vegas.com), where poolside massages and Evian water mists at the French Riviera-inspired Azure enclave are now de rigueur, the arrival of sophisticated standards give new meaning to “what happens in Vegas.” •

yleigh Kuhn’s never been one to fall into stereotypes. At 16, her freshly minted driver’s license was not used for transport from the mall to the movies, but for driving to schools to motivate fellow Bay Area high schoolers to collect pennies and spare change to contribute to her Roots of Peace Penny Campaign. She founded the nonprofit in 2003 to build schools, soccer fields and playgrounds for children in war-torn Afghanistan. And today, as a 23-year-old fashion model, she’s booking back-to-back shoots not only for her own benefit, but to keep Afghani children educated and at play. For Kuhn, it started with a trip to Croatia on her 13th birthday. The San Rafael native traveled with her mother—the founder of Roots of Peace, the number-one nongovernmental organization for agricultural development in Afghanistan—to visit the region’s landmine victims. “I was surrounded by children who had lost everything to war,” says Kuhn. “I knew I needed to create a way for my peers and myself to help.” Since its inception, the Penny Campaign has raised more than $300,000 and contributed to the development of six schools in Afghanistan. The most recent is a high school for 600 young women in the city of Bamyan, which opens in August and is making monumental strides for gender equality. It provides Bamyan’s girls—prohibited to occupy the same facilities as their male peers—with their first opportunity to be educated at a high school level. Kuhn raises funds and awareness in the U.S. through her burgeoning modeling career, which began two years ago after she was spotted by S.F.’s CITY Models in an H&M store. She donates 50% of her profits toward the campaign and uses her work as a springboard for exposure for the Campaign. “Modeling has opened a lot of doors,” says Kuhn, who also recently signed with Click Models in New York. “I’m getting support from clients while also sharing information about the cause with a wider audience.” Speeding into summer with a spread in Vogue Italia and a profile of the Penny Campaign in an Abercrombie & Fitch fall catalog, both of which have her working with famed photographer Bruce Weber, the future’s looking busy for Kuhn. “She’s being booked as ‘The Nonprofit Model,’” says Mimi Yapor, her agent at CITY Models. “When clients hear about all of the work she’s been doing at such a young age, they are immediately intrigued.” Kuhn, who graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies last year, will be traveling to Bamyan in June for the school’s inauguration, and to check on other Penny Campaign schools, like the Kyleigh Kuhn School in Mir Bacha Kot, which the children named in her honor. “In Afghanistan, they say, ‘qatra qatra darya,’ which means ‘drip, drip, ocean,’” says Kuhn. “It’s truly inspiring to go over there and see how the combination of so many students’ small contributions has transformed the reality of Afghan students.” rootsofpeace.org. •

Your moment awaits. At The Palazzo® Las Vegas, the only thing that matters is the moment. Like the moment you realize that every room is a spacious, luxurious suite. The moment you discover Carnevino and what world-class dining really tastes like. The moment you encounter the Blue Man Group and find yourself entertained on a whole new level. The moment you experience the soothing pleasures of the renowned Canyon Ranch SpaClub®. And especially the moment you learn, it’s all within reach.

Denim Duos
T
wo new designer denim collaborations take indigo essentials into new territory: Fashion favorite Proenza Schouler has teamed up with L.A. denim powerhouse J Brand to create their first jeans collaboration. Combining J Brand’s classic sleek fit with Proenza’s modern urban aesthetic, the jeans feature an exaggerated high-rise skinny fit with handpainted graphic prints. And when whimsical fashion brand Marni wanted to create a capsule collection of unique designer denim it seemed only fitting that they team up with the spirited, L.A.-based Current/Elliott. The result includes original updates of C/E’s signature styles: pearl-printed boyfriend jeans, block-printed skinnys and overalls that mix a printed Marni top with C/E’s jeans. The distinct collection stays true to both brands’ playful spirits.

Flirty feminine bikinis in their signature bright prints put a little more panache into the rituals of pool time, and serve as yet another perk of being a California girl.

ermatologists and makeup artists agree: Skin is in. And the bottom line is, the more we do for ourselves, the less they have to do. Here’s how L.A.-based makeup artist Dawn Broussard maintains a flawless facade: The OPC Synergy by Standard Process pill reduces redness caused by the sun or other harsh environmental exposure. Hamadi Shea Hair Cream is an organic product for the hair and is great as a body moisturizer; it works especially well
on tough areas like elbows and feet. Na-PCA by Twinlab, containing a natural moisturizing factor combined with aloe vera gel, is great for a refreshing midday spritz, before makeup application or for soothing after sun exposure. Jemma Kidd Make Up Skin Rescue Bio-Complex Viel SPF 15 is an all-in-one moisturizer, prep, primer, illuminator and tint. t’s not easy to find a total-body exercise routine that provides cardio and strength-training—and doesn’t require hours inside a gym. Enter the new wave in water workouts by Stand Up Paddle Company. Created by owners Noelle Kozak and Jaime Donnelly, the program incorporates the aerobic exercise of stand-up paddleboarding (aka SUP) with resistance moves and yoga. The best part: You get fit while soaking up the sun and scenery in Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar or Laguna Beach. Sessions include basics like balance and paddling techniques plus land-based circuit training or power yoga. The end of class integrates anything from push-ups to warrior pose, all on the paddleboard. Feeling more adventurous? A Roderick Romero-designed treehouse in Brentwood
reehouse architect Roderick Romero says, “Most of my work starts out for the kids, and as the adults admire the architectural building process, its use evolves into a guest home, a place for dinner parties, a true hideaway.” Cases in point: the whimsical wooden structures he’s created in Brentwood, Topanga and Santa Barbara with secret trapdoors leading to hammocks suspended 25 feet off the ground and soaking tubs planked into decking. From nests to modern cabins, a Romero design means a customized green wonderland of locally sourced materials from wood to glass. The visionary has already built in the ficus, oaks and lindens on properties owned by Sting and Donna Karan, to name a few of his 40 worldwide projects. In California, Romero begins with the individual treehouse inspiration, then indulges his set design background by digging in Hollywood for architectural elements, like stained glass at Scavengers’ Paradise and Glass Horizons, and on TerraMai.com for reclaimed wood from old barns. As designs evolve, Romero works with his wife and partner, a LEED-certified architect, to stabilize blueprints while he literally climbs with his crew to build between the branches. All you need is the tree, and the sky’s the limit. From $60,000; romerostudios.com.

top a sunny canyon or even at the beach, summer’s endless source of blanket-beckoning picnic spots gives way to the more difficult question: What to bring? For James Beard Award-winning chef Suzanne Goin, a carefree summer picnic is a rare (and multicourse) occasion. Rotating between Lucques, A.O.C. Wine Bar, Tavern (she runs all three with partner Caroline Styne) and The Hungry Cat, where she shares duties with her husband, chef David Lentz, the 36-yearold mother of three has her plate full. “There are so many menus [which all change seasonally], it feels like whenever I turn around it’s time to change things up again,” she says. In the culinary world, business and pleasure are rarely distinguishable, so a summer picnic at Styne’s Mediterranean home in Hancock Park (which she shares with her husband, gallerist Michael Kohn) is the ideal setting to test some new recipes. “Picnics are really about reinterpreting traditional dishes for the outdoors,” says Goin as she pours a pureed heirloom gazpacho soup into stemless wine glasses. With a signature white apron tied around her waist and her hair pulled back in a slick ponytail, she explains, “There are, of course, a few general hazards. You want to avoid foods that will discolor or become soggy. On the other hand, there is

A simple, free-form crostata brimming with nectarines (from Tenerelli Orchards) and blackberries (from Pudwill Farm), topped with a generous dollup of mascarpone cheese, follows. Originally a baked Italian tart, the dish can be filled with any vegetable or fruit and served warm or cold. For something more exotic, Goin turns to Tavern’s pastry chef, Breanne Varela, for her family’s spicy Punjabi rice pudding dish. Available at Tavern’s to-go counter and packed in extra-wide mason
absolutely nothing worse than a dry sandwich.” The fix: Niçoise salad, using highgrade Spanish bluefin tuna, on a crusty baguette. Goin’s version of the deconstructed dish demonstrates her ability to translate (and transcend) flavor profiles into new concepts that are just as much about practicality as presentation. “I love making a roast for dinner and turning it into a salad or sandwich the day after,” she says as she pulls out a
rack of lamb from the oven. “I actually prefer meat at room temperature.” With a natural handle, lamb chops, ribs and chicken drumsticks (Tavern’s beloved fried chicken comes in a twine-wrapped

Thankfully, after 10 years of practice, today there are a lot fewer dishes to clean. •

This major survey traces the various styles and influences throughout the career of Armenian-American artist Arshile Gorky. A seminal figure in the movement toward abstraction that transformed American art, Gorky’s tragic life informed some of the most gripping, deeply personal paintings of the 20th century.
Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective is organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in association with Tate Modern, London, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The international tour is made possible by the Terra Foundation for American Art. The U.S. tour is supported by The Lincy Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. The exhibition at MOCA is presented by The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. Generous support is provided by Lenore S. and Bernard A. Greenberg, Steve Martin, The MOCA Contemporaries, and the Pasadena Art Alliance. Additional support is provided by the MOCA Friends of Arshile Gorky: Mrs. Joseph H. Stein, Jr. and Mrs. Louise Danelian. In-kind media support is provided by Ovation TV, Asbarez Daily Newspaper/Horizon Armenian TV, YEREVAN Magazine, and Los Angeles magazine.

Beyond Beauty LACMA celebrates John Baldessari’s controversial oeuvre with a world-class retrospective BY KELSEY McKINNON Junction Series: Landscape, Seascape, Prisoner, and Acrobats (2002)

T
he title work of John Baldessari’s retrospective at LACMA this month is the artist’s 1968 painting Pure Beauty, an acrylic-on-canvas piece with the two words neatly printed against a white background. It’s what many artists aspire to create and what patrons often expect, but Baldessari’s artistic motivation has never appealed to aesthetic convention. In fact, his work has never really conveyed “pure beauty.” A towering presence at 6'7'', and now almost 80 years old, critics often define him as the single most influential conceptual artist—a movement spearheaded by French artist Marcel Duchamp in the early 1900s and popularized in the 1980s when California artists like Baldessari, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman elevated concepts and ideas over traditional aesthetics and techniques. Baldessari’s indifference to the institution of fine art is what, ironically, has been absorbed into the public consciousness, with his works filling museums and individual pieces now selling in the millions. The Venice-based artist is wistfully confused by his unexpected embrace by the mainstream. “You wonder what you’ve done wrong,” he says. At the time Baldessari created Pure Beauty he was living in National City (100 miles south of L.A.), working four part-time teaching jobs, supporting a young family and vying for the attention of local galleries with an aboveaverage body of oil paintings. Stuck on an unsatisfying creative merry-go-round, he decided to pull the plug. “I stopped trying to be an artist as I understood it and just attempted to talk to people in a language they understood,” he says. What followed was a public renunciation of painting altogether via his Cremation Project (1970), in which he burned all of his paintings Noses & Ears, Etc.: Head (with Nose) (2006), Heel to date, placed the ashes in a coffin(1986), Baldessari in his like tome and declared them the impeMain St. studio, Baldessari’s Brain Cloud installation, an tus for his subsequent work. 1970 was

a turning point for Baldessari as he rose from the ashes of the cremation project with renewed purpose. “It became my mission to have photography and language accepted as art on the same level as painting,” he says. Among his early text-photo works, Pure Beauty marked the beginning of Baldessari’s unorthodox and uncategorizable style. Sworn off painting, Baldessari commissioned local sign artists to paint words onto a canvas that would oftentimes describe an accompanying photo. Inspired by the poet William Carlos Williams’ fascination with the everyday, the photos were typically mundane documentations of his life around National City. “I didn’t have that attitude that a lot of artists had that was ‘screw the bourgeoisie,’ you know? I thought art should communicate.” One of his most famous works, Wrong (1966-68)— now a part of LACMA’s permanent collection—depicts Baldessari outside a tract home in National City with a palm tree sprouting from his head and the word “wrong” painted underneath. Like many of Baldessari’s works, the effect is, at first, humor, followed by an unsettling challenge to what constitutes “right” art. 1970 was also the year Baldessari accepted a teaching position at CalArts and moved his family to Santa Monica. While artists like William T. Wiley had Continued on Page 125

Californians have a special relationship with the sun, which showers the state with its warmth and light year-round. not just a cutting-edge energy source, solar power shapes the way we live, from the abstract realm of admiring the many modern outdoor sculptural treasures dotted throughout the Golden state to the immediate and personal question of how and whether to keep the constant stream of uV rays at bay. From the grounds of a sprawling Italianate malibu manse to the sandy expanse of Pacific beaches from stinson to torrey Pines, summer in California means one thing above all: finding the best spot from which to catch a few golden rays. photographed by Williams + hirakaWa

Wearing skinny jeans, a white cardigan and Frye boots, January Jones could have been just another exceedingly pretty actress/model as she took a seat on a recent evening, flashing a bright smile. “I don’t get noticed as her, I get noticed as me,” Jones says, referring to Betty Draper, the character she plays on “Mad Men,” which returns to AMC for a fourth season on July 25. “When people do come up to me, they’re very respectful. She’s a lady, she’s from the 1960s and she’s fragile.” Although Jones plays the pin-up pretty 1960s wife of the show’s star, Jon Hamm, she’s thoroughly modern in her real life. For starters, her dewy complexion makes her look far younger than her character or even her real age of 32. She’s already hosted “Saturday Night Live,” and she recently bought her first house, in Los Feliz, where she lives with her Yorkie poodle, Max. Unlike most starlets, she styles her own wardrobe—and she’s already a designer muse. In early May, she went to the Met Costume Institute Gala on the arm of Yves Saint Laurent’s Stefano Pilati, who made her couture dress. “I’m not donating it,” she says, emphatically, about the gown. She’s got a dream job, but Jones worries about being pigeonholed in the role of housewife, a part she plays pitch perfectly even though she’s never been married and is currently single. What she would really love is a juicy part in a comedic film where the girl’s purpose is more than just setting up the joke for the guy. It would hardly be surprising if she manages to pull that off, plus a lot more, in the foreseeable future. “I’m a modern person!” she says, giggling. And that’s when the other people in the restaurant start clueing into Betty Draper’s presence—even though Jones tries to separate herself from her character, they have the same demure, yet girlish laugh. Upon close inspection, they would have found more signs of similarity. Earlier that day, Jones got what she calls “my Betty nails”: long pointy fake ones that look totally real. “I’m very conscious of them,” she says, folding her hands in her lap. “I feel like people judge me when I have them on.” It’s doubtful anyone judges her on her nails alone, but there is public scrutiny. A few weeks earlier, there were press reports that the producers of “Mad Men” had decided to move Elisabeth Moss, who plays Peggy, to the category of best supporting actress—from best actress—for the Emmys in September to improve Jones’ chances of winning the best actress category after being snubbed the previous two years.

t was hardly an easy path to that trailer for Jones, who grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. (January is her real name—she was named after a character in a Jacqueline Susann novel.) During high school, she worked at a Dairy Queen before getting her start as an Abercrombie & Fitch model, but it took some time for Hollywood to come calling. After moving to Los Angeles about 10 years ago, she started landing small roles in films like American Pie, Anger Management and Love Actually, but work was anything but steady. “I don’t know if I believe in fate or destiny, but it felt something like that,” says Jones, who recently returned from Berlin, where she was shooting the movie Unknown White Male, costarring Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger. “Every time I’d get to where I had like 500 bucks in the bank, I’d get something that would just keep it going. There’s only one time when I had to ask my parents for, like, half my rent and I was able to pay it back very quickly.” While she may not have been landing the big parts, she was landing the big guys—her famous boyfriends include Ashton Kutcher and Josh Groban. Little-known fact: She once got a fake tattoo of Seth Rogen’s name on his birthday—a prank his professionally funny friends found hilarious. “There was definitely interest but I wouldn’t say we dated,” she says about Rogen, whom she met while shooting a pilot for Judd Apatow, who also created “Undeclared,” a TV show Rogen was on at the time. “I used to say I didn’t want to date another actor, but it’s hard,” says Jones. “I’m in such a bubble. It’s hard to meet anyone, but I’m not going to rule out actors anymore, either. As long as he’s not a tool!” That bubble includes watching reality TV like “America’s Next Top Model” and dramedies like Showtime’s “United States of Tara” and “Nurse Jackie” with girlfriends and her sister, Jina, who lives in L.A. and works continued on page 125

Jones shot down those reports, explaining the actors submit themselves in the category of their choice—and it’s highly unlikely any actress would voluntarily cede the spotlight. “In no way would Elisabeth Moss say, ‘You know what? You deserve to get out there,’” says Jones. “It’s not the business.” Awards competition aside, Jones insists the “Mad Men” cast is chummy but careful not to become complacent. “I think we collectively, as the cast, writers and creators, feel very lucky that it’s had so much success, but now more than ever, we have a reputation to uphold and a level of work we have to keep meeting, so there’s a lot of pressure on us,” Jones says. There’s no sign of the show’s success slumping with critics or fans as it enters its next season, and the show’s creator, Matt Weiner, is thrilled with Jones’ portrayal of Betty Draper—even though he initially considered her for the role of Peggy. “January has been a pleasure to work with in every aspect,” Weiner says. “She’s a fun, adventurous actress who brings an almost instinctive insight into the character. It’s gotten to the point where the minute I see her in costume, coming from the trailer, I can see Betty on her face.”

tanning tribes By Christine Lennon the palm-lined pools that dot Beverly Hills. But the tan-as-statussymbol is a fairly recent development. In the late ’50s and early ’60s, the leisurely Hollywood lifestyle (mostly appropriated by transplants from gloomier places back East)—with a tan as the ultimate accessory—became a fixation for the rest of the country. But these days, there’s a division in the ranks of famous local beauties. You’re as likely to see images of Kelly Wearstler perched beneath one of her collection of vintage parasols as you are paparazzi photos of Jennifer Aniston untying her bikini straps to avoid tan lines. Makeup artist and Malibu mom Jillian Dempsey, who works with tanners like Cameron Diaz and porcelain dolls like Zooey Deschanel, says what it boils down to is fear of aging like an old shoe, and understanding your own skin’s limitations. “The girls who are really fair and have that skin with pink undertones, they know that they’re going to burn in the sun. And there’s no way to make that look nice,” she says. “You look so much better in that little sundress with perfectly pale skin than you do with red splotches all over. “But for people like me, with yellowish skin, we put on shorts at the beginning of the season and think, ‘God, I could use a little color on my legs.’ I’m outside with my kids all the time, and I’ll wear a hat with a big brim and sunscreen, but I’ll always think I look better with a little kiss of color.” Dermatologists Peter Kopelson, M.D., and Sheri Feldman, M.D., see this kind of patient in their offices every day and have learned to manage their expectations when it comes to total sun-avoidance. A New York-based dermatologist may espouse a no-sun, no-exceptions mantra to their patient base, but a doctor based in Beverly Hills needs to be a little more realistic. “I have patients who come in tan all the time,” says Feldman. “And I’ll say, ‘Do I need to give you the sunscreen lecture, or do you understand what you’re in for?’ The reality is, I live at the beach. I have kids. I hike and I love to be outside and swim in the ocean. I understand. But I wear my coNtiNued oN paGe 126

hen Julia Sorkin, a chic Beverly Hills mom who’s active on all the right charity boards, goes to Barneys to ask for her favorite SPF 6 sunscreen spray at the Clarins counter, she’s often met with a bewildered expression. “I say, ‘I know it’s back there! Look in the back of the shelf, behind the 30,’” she says, with a laugh. “It’s for my legs! Give me a break. I love the sun. I love the way it feels on my skin. I love to be a little tan. I have a balcony off of my office at home, and every day I go out there to read or nap for about a half hour in the sun. At the pool, my friends are hiding under umbrellas with giant hats, and I’m lying out. I want to retire in Boca and be bronze and wear off-the-shoulder dresses, like Diane von Furstenberg.” If the sun-kissed Sorkin had a reverse image, someone on the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of their UV appetite, it would be film- and taste-maker Liz Goldwyn. “I started wearing Oil of Olay SPF moisturizer in junior high,” says Goldwyn, who was hired as an ambassador for Shiseido cosmetics at 20 and learned about aging from sun exposure at the time when most of her peers were still spring breaking in Cancún. “If I’m at the sea, I wear a man’s buttondown shirt over my bikini, except when I’m swimming. I wear Le Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 60 always, even indoors. If I’m outside, I’m under an umbrella whenever possible. My dad bought me an amazing white Yves Saint Laurent sun hat from his last ready-to-wear collection that has a brim so big it covers me down to my chest. I truly don’t care if this makes me seem eccentric. We’ll see who’s laughing in 10 years.” This tale of two women, both native Californians, one tawny and one fair, each expending an enormous amount of energy either moving toward or away from the light, sums up the complicated relationship locals have with the sun. We love it or we hate it; sometimes we love it and we hate it. We love being outside on a clear, warm day, yet we shroud ourselves in titanium dioxide and oversized hats when we do. And competing information from the medical community—with one camp citing the rise in cases of melanoma, one of the deadliest and most difficult-to-treat cancers, and the other touting the benefits of sun-dependent vitamin D—only confuses matters. The image of bronzed babies playing in the sand (it’s called the Golden State for a reason), their hair stripped blonde by the sea and the sun, is as much a part of California iconography as The Beach Boys, convertibles, acres of orange groves and

n essential element of Los Angeles’ charm is that it’s a study of contrasts: skyscrapers and palisades, seashore and land, paradox and whimsy. Head west on the 10—what locals call it—from downtown for about 25 minutes (if there’s no traffic), until you are spit out onto Pacific Coast Highway, and the shock of the brilliant blue ocean reveals itself to the left. Drive past Santa Monica, and Malibu appears, an urban influence giving way to fish shacks, surfers in pickup trucks and small-town businesses on the right, beach and shorefront homes on the left. Past Point Dume and Zuma Beach is Encinal Bluffs, an enclave within an enclave. Whizzing by at 65 miles an hour, one can almost imagine the homes along this multimillion-dollar stretch of Malibu are quaint or low-key. Turn into one such driveway and the discreet gate opens to reveal a surprise: a long driveway leading to a sigh-inducing vista of a well-proportioned Italianate villa in the distance, situated on eight acres of land with the sea twinkling beyond it. Nestled among mature trees, immaculate grounds and manicured rows of lavender the house is incongruous, astonishing and breathtakingly beautiful. A turnabout driveway with a tall gurgling fountain in the center greets you, and shallow, wide steps lead up to an elevated podium and wrought-iron gate shut closed, a large wooden door swung open behind it, as Leon, an adorable terrier mix, yaps out his friendly greeting. The weekend home of a Los Angeles-based couple—he’s a businessman, she’s a portrait painter and writer—the abode has evolved substantially from what they first encountered eight years ago. The two were looking to buy in Malibu, and the then-owner had festooned the home with a decidedly outré taste—think red upholstery, crystal chandeliers and a Vegas-like glitz—and the pair doubted they could put their own stamp on it. Enter designer Michael S. Smith, a longtime collaborator of the couple’s. Smith, who possesses the uncanny ability to channel the unconscious of a space, divined the potential in an instant. As he faced the residence, Smith said, “Imagine a Palladian front,” the Pacific framing his view. Thus came the theme for the property, inspired by the work of Italian Renaissance-era architect Andrea Palladio. Architect Oscar Shamanian, a frequent collaborator with Smith, drew up plans in the classical, symmetrical style that characterized Palladio’s work. The blueprints preserved at least 51% of the walls and much of the footprint of the original structure, circumventing the requirement to submit their plans for approval from the California Coastal Commission. After three and a half years of planning and obtaining the proper permits, two and a half years of construction and remodeling commenced. “We basically took the house down to the studs,” says the husband. The structure was gutted, then rebuilt from the inside out.

Working on previous projects together, the couple and Smith have traveled together around the globe: Lisbon, Paris, Majorca, Florence, Rome and Marrakech. As an idea for Encinal Bluffs, “Michael suggested a renovated 17th-century loft in Antwerp,” says the husband. So a trip to designer Axel Vervoordt’s studio in Belgium was in order for inspiration. They also flew to Veneto to view Palladio’s iconic works there. The trio fell into loose roles for this home: The husband scouted antique dealers, auction houses and flea markets such as Paris’ Les Puces with Smith when time permitted, while his wife served as producer, ensuring they were meeting deadlines and moving forward as necessary with weekly construction meetings. As she points out, “I was the closer—the one to say, ‘OK, let’s make a decision and go with it.’” Smith was also involved with every aspect of the design of the estate, working closely with the architects and landscape designer Mia Lehrer. “He is the most profound cross-referencer we know, absolutely tireless,” says the husband. “He will spend hours on the Internet to track something down. He also has a flawless visual memory for everything he’s ever seen.” The sunroom, with a sky-high ceiling and a roof that retracts with the push of a button, is just one of the awe-inspiring flourishes. Directly adjacent is a loggia with a fireplace, which serves as an open-air sitting room. A pristine, minimalist pool is set on the lawn between the house and sea. West of the main residence and a little up, past the lavender and a fountain—its former incarnation was as an olive press—is the tennis court. Further up sit the garage, gatehouse and caretaker’s lodge. This corner of the estate was originally a separate continued on page 127 parcel of land, as was the lot where

The estate is more than the sum of its parts, integrating site, architecture and landscape into a viscerally pleasing whole.

Snaking through 320 feet of Stanford University’s campus, Andy Goldsworthy’s Stone River offers a meditation on light as much as it suggests process, progression and transition. Constructed of 128 tons of sandstone set, in some places, more than three feet into the earth, the sculpture nevertheless conveys the ephemeral quality of light at any given moment. Stone River may be permanent but, like the knife’s edge at the uppermost part of the sculpture, its mass disintegrates at the will of the less tangible, but no less powerful, properties of air and time.

maK Center Los Angeles As many Californians are painfully aware, the daily commute is paved with uninvited visual intrusions in the form of billboards. As if in answer to the question “What if these signs were actually interest ing, even pleasurable, to look at?,” the MAK Center in Los Angeles recently commissioned a public installation of billboards featuring newly created work by contem porary artists. For those who have seen them, the line between advertising and artistic visual provocation will forever be blurred.

riChard serra Mission Bay Known for his monumental sculptures, often made of Cor-Ten steel designed to change color over time, Richard Serra is a master of nonfunctional yet heroic architecture. For UCSF’s Mission Bay campus, Serra defined a newly constructed public space with Ballast: two 50-foot-tall steel plates, each slightly tilted in different directions. The plates create a theater for social interaction through their metaphor of powerful dialogue. The reverberation of voices in the plaza provide the auditory element already suggested by the massive yet elegant and towering steel plates.

Conceived at the very moment the first skyscraper was being built atop Los Angeles’ Bunker Hill, Four Arches has been, from its beginnings, inextricable from its site. Hailed for his whimsical and technically ambitious mobiles, Alexander Calder introduced the idea of movement into the language of carbon plate steel. Four Arches may not move, but for those who pass beneath its lofty gateway, its stillness is moving all the same.

An homage in neon and enameled metal, Rauschenberg’s sculpture celebrates a 17th-century Venus painting by placing an image of it among less exalted objects, such as a bicycle, T-shirt and necktie. Brittany Lietz didn’t think that indoor tanning could hurt her. She didn’t know UV light from indoor tanning can actually increase your risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Brittany, a frequent indoor tanner since she was 17, was diagnosed with melanoma when she was 20. She is a melanoma survivor, but current estimates show that one person dies from melanoma about every hour. Don’t be one of them. Indoor tanning is out. beyond beauty continued from page 78
already established a noteworthy scene in California, to make it as an artist outside of New York was still an anomaly. A devoted family man, the fact that Baldessari was so committed to living in L.A. while aspiring to be an international artist in itself seemed to catch the public’s attention. Acclaim for Baldessari rose throughout the 1970s as critics tried to process his flood of conceptually based works. Between 1970 and 1980 Baldessari produced thousands of images, showing 10 times in New York, 26 in Europe and four in L.A. In her exhibition essay, LACMA Curator Leslie Jones says, “The rise of Baldessari did correspond with the rise of L.A. as an artistic center.” She adds that critics at the time even suggested L.A. was riding on Baldessari’s “coattails.” James Hugunin from the New Art Examiner may have put it best, noting that Baldessari was “L.A.’s best ticket to the major leagues.” And in many ways, that would prove to be true, as demonstrated by the body of work he would produce in the ’80s. A self-titled show at the Margo Leavin Gallery in 1984 revealed large-scale and irregularly framed photocompositions that Baldessari had cropped, enlarged and reassembled in stacked formations. Themes like sex and violence radiated from the Hollywood archetypes depicted in the photos Baldessari had altered, which were primarily discarded movie stills he found at a shop in Hollywood. The charged compositions—often collages of seemingly unrelated images—were highly provocative in their associations. In addition to the movie stills, by the mid-’80s, Baldessari’s photo collection included hundreds of lifestyle clippings from local newspapers. “I hated looking at them because it was all about a life that I detested...
Once I just covered over the faces, and there was such a flood of relief,” he says. He did so with colorful and abstract disks that steered the natural line of vision away from its intended focus, providing freedom to interpret the void in a seemingly infinite number of ways. It was the question of judgment, even his own judgment, that intrigued him in the process. Baldessari’s former student Meg Cranston explains, “He’s not only interested in the choices one ultimately makes but in the whole universe of options we reject.” In 1986, he was awarded a Guggenheim grant and was finally able to leave his position at CalArts to devote himself completely to making art. Since then, he’s produced more photo-text works and experimented in color blocking, with the infamous “dot” resurfacing many more times. Most recently, his preoccupation with the human form has materialized in a series of colorful and bizarre reliefs. They’re classic Baldessari, though, with noses and ears as well as knees and elbows—the body’s least expressive features—taking center stage. Presenting more than 100 works in mediums from video to sculpture to photocompositions, “Pure Beauty” reunited Baldessari with many pieces he hadn’t encountered in years. He explains, “There’s always that queasy feeling that you might see a child that you haven’t seen for a number of years and you hope they’re not a drug addict or something.” Having already shown at London’s Tate and in Barcelona at the MACBA, he says, “So far I’ve been pleasantly surprised; some of the works are much better than I ever really thought.” Among the pieces on loan from museums and private collectors, a large portion of the work was obtained from Baldessari’s personal collection. On a tree-lined, Venice street, Baldessari’s main office features a temperature-controlled vault (where thousands of works
are stored) and an extensive research library. After 30 years in a loft on Main Street in Santa Monica, Baldessari recently moved into his new private studio on the corner of the same street. The imposing metal and glass structure designed by his friend Frank Gehry’s protégé, architect Ron Godfredsen, doesn’t exactly fit in with the rest of the neighborhood bungalows. Baldessari jokes, “I call it the Music Center West. It’s too good for me, but whatever.” Really though, it seems to suit Baldessari to a T: ostensibly out of place, but more likely just ahead of its time. June 27September 12. •

at Lionsgate. Jones tends to order in more than she goes out, but she’s considering joining Soho House. She gets her retail therapy fix at boutiques, including Satine and Confederacy, and decorating her new house. Don’t hate her for it, but while she enjoys playing tennis, hiking and doing yoga, she’s been told to stop exercising and eat more when she’s shooting “Mad Men” to look more like a realistic 1960s woman. Oh, and she’s one of those genetically thin people, too. Her idea of a really good time is swimming with sharks. Literally. She’s off to Belize to dive with endangered sharks, as part of her role as a spokeswoman for Oceana, the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation—a cause which first captured her interest as a little kid, even though she didn’t see the ocean until she was about 15 years old. She’s even gone to Washington, D.C., to talk to senators on behalf of the sharks. “There’s a certain adrenaline rush and there has to be a bit of fear that goes with it,” she says of swimming

with the predatory fish. “There’s also a bit of excitement.” One could say the same thing about working in Hollywood. “I still feel like I’m a fish out of water,” says Jones. “I don’t think you can allow yourself to feel comfortable because success can be taken away from you. You have to keep working like every day is your last.” •

hat, my rash guard and my sunscreen, and I pass out my business card to all of the people at the beach who don’t.” Kopelson grew up in Los Angeles spreading a thick layer of Bain de Soleil on his skin to get “as dark as possible.” Today, he’d never lie in a chaise and bask in the sun. But he would go on a hike. And this year, for Feldman’s birthday, he gave her beach towels. “There are endorphins that are released when you feel the sun on your skin. It’s addictive, both the way it makes you feel and the way it looks, if you like your skin to be tan,” says Kopelson. “I have a few patients who say, ‘I know that my skin looks like leather, but I’m not going to stop going in the sun.’ And I’ve got to be honest, when I see a guy in a business suit driving a convertible, baking his head in the sun, I wonder about his intelligence level. But more often, I’ll see people who do spend time outdoors, but they’re consistent with sunscreen. There’s no doubt that if you stay in a dark room your entire life, you will age very well. But it’s a lifestyle choice.” That’s not to say Kopelson and Feldman aren’t terribly concerned with the steady rise in melanoma cases over the last 30 years, particularly among young women and men over 50. Estimates from the American Cancer Society suggest that more
than 68,000 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in 2009, and more than 8,600 people will die from it. “It is on the rise, and it’s hard to tell whether that’s because we’re catching it early, because people are so aware, or if it’s actually becoming more prevalent,” says Feldman. “But the fact is that melanoma, if left untreated, is uniformly deadly.” There isn’t a doctor alive who would advocate a sunburn, which is the primary cause of skin cancer, but there are some people in the medical community who say dermatologists have become too extremist if they tell their patients never to step outside without covering their skin with SPF 30. Vitamin D deficiency, which has been linked to depression, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and even increased cancer risk, is an issue that has nearly everyone thinking about their sun habits. The body manufactures vitamin D when the skin is exposed to the sun, and sunscreen creates a barrier making this synthesis impossible. In The Vitamin D Solution, Michael Holick, M.D., of Boston University advocates spending time outside regularly, wearing sunscreen only on the face. And Holick believes as people have become increasingly maniacal about sunscreen, their vitamin D rates have plummeted, causing a spike in the incidences of a number of diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis and even cancer. “If you spend time outside in a bathing suit in a place like California, and it’s hard to say how much time because of the angle of the sun at different times of year—it could be an hour in April at 10 a.m. or 10 minutes on a July afternoon—your body manufactures 15,000 to 20,000 units of vitamin D,” says Holick, compared to an eight-ounce glass of vitamin D-fortified milk, which contains only 100 units. “If you’re wearing sunscreen all over because you’re concerned with the aging of
the skin, then I recommend supplementing with 2,000 to 3,000 units of vitamin D a day for adults. It’s always a good idea to protect the skin of young children, who can burn very easily, but they should receive 400 to 1,000 units a day.” But could it be possible for someone who lives in California, outside of the perpetually misty and cloudcovered Bay Area, to be vitamin D-deficient? Wouldn’t walking from the car to the grocery store be adequate exposure? “In the more populated areas, like Los Angeles, pollution is a factor,” says Holick. “It actually requires more effort for people there because the air quality is so poor that the ozone around L.A. prevents your body from making vitamin D.” And at least some local doctors are jumping on the bandwagon. “I had my blood work done at my chiropractor and longevity specialist’s office, and he diagnosed me as being vitamin D-deficient,” says Cameron Silver, vintage clothing specialist and owner of Decades in Los Angeles. “So now, every day, I expose as much skin as possible and lie in the sun for 10 to 20 minutes a day, whenever the weather allows. I was never in the sun before. I was always pale. So I was like, ‘Wait, it’s not the kiss of death? It may actually make me feel better?’ And it does. I’ve got a little color, but I’m closer to pale than tan. That dark Britney Spears tan feels very ‘The Aughts’ to me. It’s passé.” The Pam Anderson “Baywatch” tan? The George Hamilton burgundy tan? The gleaming J. Lo allover-glow fake tan? That, like those endless orange groves, is officially a part of California history. “Male soap stars and the cast of ‘Jersey Shore.’ Those are the only people who are that tan anymore,” adds Silver. And, for now at least, most of us here are happy to lend that look to the other coast. •

The resulting estate is more than the sum of its parts, integrating site, architecture and landscape into a viscerally pleasing whole. The main residence is a disciplined two-story structure that includes four bedrooms (the cou-
ple has two grown children who often visit), a library, two kitchens, two studies, two dressing rooms, a gym and staff quarters, as well as extensive guest quarters with a separate entrance and kitchen. Despite the scale, the owners sought out a convivial, welcoming atmosphere rather than one of forbidding magnificence and opulence. “I wanted a comfortable, approachable, casual and relaxed home—not uptight,” says the wife. In a way their aim is met: Every seat is inviting, each vantage
point gratifying. On the other hand, it is impossible not to be impressed with the grandeur found here. Each element of the property has been selected with such precision and care that the cumulative effect is one of cool flawlessness. There is not a single square-inch of the home that doesn’t exhibit a perfectionist’s eye for detail and irreproachable taste. With such beauty and order, there is a pang in leaving it: How can the chaotic, entropic “real world” compare? •

DaviD Hockney, 1982 When David Hockney moved to Los angeles in the 1960s, the British artist embraced life under the sun. “is that a Hockney?” people would ask, responding to his life-affirming images of optimism and color. Sun on the Pool Los Angeles April 13th 1982 was just that, a grid-like photo collage of Polaroids that collectively portrayed the ideal of sun-drenched glamour. Hockney was captivated by the water’s transparency, reflection and, primarily, its constant fluidity. as one of the most celebrated progressives of modern art, that’s also what he loved most about california.
