s C celebrates its fifth anniversary this September, I am filled with wonderful memories from over the years. Most important to the DNA of this publication is its fabulous staff—a group who continues to create a beautiful magazine, month after month. This issue marks the first with
Jenny Murray Hooks as Editor. She’s an amazing talent whom I’ve worked with for more than 10 years (starting at Santa Barbara Magazine, then transitioning to launch C as managing editor). We say goodbye to former Editor Nathan Cooper, as he embarks on life as a diplomat! We will look forward to his dispatches from abroad. A few other editorial changes in the mix: We are lucky to have Andrea Stanford stay on as Design Editor-at-Large, while new Senior Editors Florence Kane from Vogue and author Alison Clare Steingold, as well as Arts + Culture Editor Elizabeth Khuri Chandler, formerly of Los Angeles Times Magazine, join the ranks. You will notice that as we kick off our next five years, we are charged up and raring to go…continuing to bring you unique, onlyin-California stories. I have always loved California to my core, which is why I created a magazine to reflect the best this state has to offer—through the lens of Californians. The idea for C hit me more than seven years ago and has been driving me ever since. And with time comes technological progress. You can now read this issue of C on your iPad or iPhone with the C MAG app, one download at a time. Also, check out our relaunched website (magazinec.com) for our current and past issues, plus original content: The Daily C, a dose of all things chic in the Golden State. With so many changes, it’s also the start of a new season—fashion-wise, that is. Our fall fashion special focuses on the best of the runways and edits it all down to the most essential looks for Californians. We take a peek inside the homes of industry innovators; we profile film and style darling Diane Kruger; and we showcase the gorgeous abode of LACMA CEO/ Director Michael Govan and his truly elegant wife, Katherine Ross. The way they mix art and light in their traditional Hancock Park home is a great example of California cool. And, as our anniversary gift to you, cherished readers, we shot this issue’s fashion portfolio deep in the heart of Joshua Tree—a picturesque postcard of this desert oasis. At five years in, with many more to go, think of C as our “love

Double Take A pair of sisters-in-law has teamed up to make a collection of very versatile and super stylish jackets BY FLORENCE KANE
FROm LEFt Veronica
Swanson Beard, Veronica miele Beard. Navy and olive blazers, $495 each, available at Dressed, Santa Barbara, 805-565-1253.
Miele Beard might wear hers with a dress and heels; and Swanson Beard, over jeans. The pieces work equally well in New York, where the duo currently reside, and Swanson Beard’s native San Francisco. “People live in their jackets in N.Y., but it’s also the perfect throw-on for that Northern California climate,” says Swanson Beard. The collection also has a California vibe—easy and effortless, giving instant style. For spring, the two Veronicas are expanding beyond jackets to other complementary silhouettes. The concept: Dash out the door with one small bag of clothes and still be prepared for a weekend including, say, a dinner party, Christening, bonfire and day at the club. “Anything can be thrown at a girl,” says Swanson Beard. “With our clothes—plus a pair of white jeans—she could get it done.” veronicabeard.com. •

hen two designers start a collection together, the issue of what to call it can be tricky. Do they just combine their surnames à la Dolce & Gabbana? Or use their mothers’ maiden names, like Proenza Schouler and Rodarte? Maybe they come up with something different altogether (as did Rag & Bone’s David Neville and Marcus Wainwright). That part was easy for the sisters-in-law behind a new collection of preppy-practical jackets; both women are named Veronica Beard. Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard have launched a line of functional fitted blazers with detachable pieces that capture the look of wearing a sweater underneath— but without all the bulkiness. Zip a striped hood into a navy jacket, for example, then swap it out for an oatmeal-hued fisherman’s turtleneck and cuffs. The flattering, versatile blazers are inspired by classic menswear labels such as Turnbull & Asser, and, most importantly, the lifestyles of their creators. Swanson Beard, whose family owns Swanson Vineyards in Napa, and Miele Beard are both busy mothers (Swanson has two children; Miele, four, and one on the way). “At some point in your life, it just becomes hard to chase the trends,” says Swanson Beard, 30. Her co-designer, 37, agrees: “We’re still young, but perhaps we can’t dress as youthfully as we used to. We need wearable, respectable pieces that are still a little sexy.”
A Jean-Philippe Delhomme illustration of the Swanson family features a jacket by the designers.

ilkes Bashford enjoys a lively lunch at Le Central restaurant just about every weekday, as he has for the past four decades. These days, though, you might spot the seasoned fashion retailer dining in this downtown San Francisco eatery with his two new business partners, CEO Jack Mitchell and his nephew Tyler Mitchell. Last year, The Mitchells Family of Stores acquired the Wilkes Bashford men’s and women’s specialty stores in San Francisco and Palo Alto—shopping spots treasured over the years by locals like Dede Wilsey, John Traina and former mayor Willie Brown. And now, along with Bashford, the Mitchells (who also operate three successful clothing emporiums in Connecticut and New York), are announcing plans to revitalize the Northern California style destinations, the first of which was founded in 1966. “This is a very exciting time at Wilkes Bashford,” says Jack, who describes a downtown remodel in addition to new and exclusive collections (like J. Mendel, Michael Kors and Etro; the Palo Alto shop will carry names like Narciso Rodriguez and Valentino); new services; broader price points; and even fresh fits for menswear. “I’ve seen every trend come and go: the slim Armani silhouette, casual Fridays, new designers on the scene,” Bashford recalls. “We keep our customers happy by buying pieces with specific clients in mind.” “And every season, we will shake things up a bit, add more lines, bring in new accessories and ideas,” adds Jack. “We love to have fun with fashion. We want everyone to feel at home here.” wilkesbashford.com. •

ever wish you would have,” says handbag designer Kendall Conrad. “That’s something my dad taught me a long time ago.” The items on display at her Venice boutique, which opened this summer, certainly reveal a life led in full. “Author friends of my parents, like William F. Buckley, were always dropping by our house on Rincon Point,” says the leggy brunette, who now lives just a few miles from there with her husband, director/photographer David Cameron, and their two daughters, in Montecito. Her father, writer and bullfighter Barnaby Conrad, prepared her with a worldly spirit that served her well when Parisian designers began calling on the young model. Whether walking shows in Milan and Paris or being shot for international editions of Vogue, “I couldn’t help but be inspired by the European aesthetic,” says Conrad, who would return to California and, in 2005, launch her eponymous handbag line. Conrad’s hybrid style of refined tailoring and beachy practicality became a cult sensation among in-the-know Angelenos and, after establishing a thriving wholesale business, growing demand prompted her to set up shop. Behind the glass storefront, sleek white shelves are dotted with finely crafted pieces, simple and elegant in neutral-colored leathers that get better with age. From iPad cases to travelers’ totes, everything is handmade in California with materials that are all by-products of the food industry—even the alligator. To balance the season’s bold ready-to-wear, “We went for a soft, peachy look. On the skin, we used Vitalumière Fluide foundation and a tiny bit of Poudre Universelle Libre. We achieved this pretty cheek with Joues Contraste blush in Fresque. On the eyes, we didn’t use any mascara, but made sure the bare lashes were curled, then brushed on Ombre Essentielle shadow in Ivory and Le Crayon Khôl pencil in Clair. A scion of American royalty opens a yoga studio in L.A. BY DEBORAH SCHOENEMAN
M
eaghan Kennedy Townsend likes to kick off teaching her yoga class by blasting some rock-and-roll. “I’m going to play some church music for you now,” she says on a recent Saturday morning, cranking up the song “Faith” by George Michael. The irony may have been lost on the sweaty group of about 20, since they’re gathered for a yoga class more focused on burning calories than chanting om. Only a few students know that Townsend was raised Catholic—in America’s most famous family. Yes, there’s a Kennedy among the Lululemonites of Southern California. The yoga instructor is the oldest daughter of Kathleen Kennedy—former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and eldest of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Skakel’s 11 children. Townsend’s father is David Townsend, a professor at St. John’s College and the Aspen Institute’s Senior Advisor on Seminars. At 32, Townsend has come into her own as one of the city’s most successful yoga teachers with a steady base of private clients, including Drew Barrymore, Bob Saget and screenwriter Mike White (School of Rock). Having earned her chops teaching for about a decade at various studios and gyms around town, Townsend finally opened her dream studio, Up Dog Fitness, in February. The classes are already full—if not totally packed—with passionate followers who can’t get enough of her high-intensity, flow-style yoga. “It’s about giving back in a different way,” says Townsend.
“People say to me on a daily basis, ‘You changed my life,’ and ‘Look at this community you’re creating.’” Townsend, for one, certainly improved her life with yoga. The legendary Kennedy curse didn’t exactly pass her over. In 10th grade—after taking an educational test, being developed by a family friend, on a whim—Townsend found out that she was severely dyslexic with a kindergarten reading level (though she did have math skills of a college student). She was also diagnosed with A.D.H.D. These discoveries helped ease the pressure she had felt her whole Townsend’s Up life. After all, her birth announcement in Dog Fitness studio the newspaper said she would usher in a in West Hollywood more peaceful time for her family as the first of a new generation of Kennedys, go to Harvard and follow in her clan’s presidential footsteps. (She did attend the Ivy League university, but her college experience was anything but easy.) “I was a bit of an outcast,” says Townsend, who also had major food allergies. “I never learned a good skill-set for having relationships. Maybe it was because I was dyslexic, or maybe because I was a Kennedy, or maybe because I moved around a lot as a kid, but I didn’t know how to interact with people very well. I had a hard time.” She discovered yoga while visiting relatives in L.A. during a college break and checked out flow-style vinyasa classes taught by now-yogalebrities Steve Ross, Bryan Kest, Shiva Rea and Seane Corn. here was a pair of Blanc de Chine lamps with pink lacquered shades that I’d bought for myself on 1stDibs,” says interior designer Windsor Smith. “Then Gillian saw them and said, ‘Those are for me, right?’ That’s how the bedroom started.” Really, for Smith and fashion-loving Gillian Raimi, it was the beginning of a whole boudoir—which includes a sitting room, an elegant bathroom and, of course, a large closet— in her Pacific Palisades home. Raimi’s vibrant, “feminine-but-edgy” Marni, Rochas and Marchesa hang not only in her blush-pink dressing room, but also on the bedroom’s sconces while she gets ready to appear on the red carpet with her husband (director and producer Sam Raimi). “She’s supermom during the day,” says Smith of her client, who has five young children. “At night, she’s Jessica Rabbit.” While “the clothes are definitely part of the decor,” says Raimi, there are also paintings by Ann Craven and Robert Shaw photographs, furniture designed by Smith and a custom bedspread made by quilters who sew for couture houses. As a nod to both Sam and Gillian, who’s directing her first short film, Fanboy, Smith also added a vintage movie camera to a bedside table. “Any woman would feel beautiful here,” Smith says. “It’s sophisticated and grown-up, like the Oscar dress everyone loves the most.” •

ustainability has long been streaming through the lives of fashion designer Jesse Kamm and husband, environmental scientist Lucas Brower. After a maternity hiatus in Austin, TX, the family recently returned to L.A. and launched Home Grow Micro Farms, a local service that delivers seasonal, pre-planted custom container gardens to urbanites who have limited space and time. The method is simple: Select a smattering of crops from the website, then Brower (or one of Home Grow’s technicians) sets up the raised-bed, self-irrigating boxes anywhere there’s a water spigot and five hours of sun. Daily maintenance means harvesting, snipping leaves and keeping an eye out for pests. “We make it as easy as possible to grow your own food,” says Kamm. “Plenty of people think tomatoes literally come from Trader Joe’s or the farmers’ market, so how cool to have bragging rights at a dinner party—to say, ‘Hey, this salad is mine—I grew this.’” From $100/four-month box; homegrowmicrofarms.com.

ike any growing seven-year-old, the Garden School Foundation, a community coalition inspired by Alice Waters’s Edible Schoolyard project, needed attention. Founded and supported by L.A. luminaries such as Mozza chef Nancy Silverton and landscape designer Nancy Goslee Power, the program had yet to raise funds for a kitchen classroom. Enter Nathan Turner. The interior designer had been introduced to the organization by Goslee Power and quickly put an event in motion by selecting friends Jenni Kayne-Ehrlich, the L.A. fashion designer, and actress/model Amber Valletta to help throw a family-friendly backyard fundraiser. “They are both moms and committed to healthful living, so they were natural picks,” says Turner of his co-hosts. And so, the letterpress invites were sent, centerpieces arranged, and on a sunny Saturday in Beverly Hills, some 200 guests gathered to celebrate the L.A.-based non-profit, which works hands-on with the Los Angeles Unified School District to teach children about the sources of the food they eat—whether by planting, harvesting or cooking. With its organic garden, abundant light and raw wood accents, Kayne-Ehrlich’s home provided the ideal backdrop for the daytime affair. Adults sipped chilled Pinot Grigio while their tots played at an arts-and-crafts table loaded with a rainbow of pipe cleaners, pom-poms and feathers. Root vegetables cascaded from tiered galvanized tins placed on burlap-covered tables, while vintage quilts scattered throughout the yard made the picnic comfortable for a cool crowd that included Kirsty Hume, Ione Skye, Rachel Zoe, Lydia Hearst, Amanda Anka and Jason Bateman. Inside, Silverton’s classic dishes from Mozza2Go beckoned from giant platters: eggplant caponata, marinated olives, chopped salad, and, of course, plenty of margherita and fennel-sausage pizza. Before the butterscotch budino was gone, Turner knew the event had been a success. The Garden School kitchen classroom would become a reality. gardenschoolfoundation.org.•

t’s dawn in the deserted High Sierras, where immense expanses of milky light are honeyed with clear sun. The dairy boys angle morning cream into frosty steel “shotguns” and lug the six-gallon containers to the kitchen. The old iron bell dings and the rugged coterie—26 in all, 13 per class—queue up at the Boardinghouse while pancake batter sizzles on the griddle. These philosopher cowboys will graduate from the rigorous two-year program into lofty universities such as Yale and Oxford. Today, though, they roll their flapjacks around long ribbons of bacon, dust a little brown sugar on top and devour them like tacos.
Breakfast has looked pretty much the same around here since 1917, when electricity magnate L.L. ix years ago, financier Andy Pilara made a seemingly in nocuous trip to a Diane Arbus exhibition at SFMOMA. His subse quent Arbus impulse buy quickly turned into more than 2,000 Richard Avedons, Garry Winogrands, Doro thea Langes and Vanessa Beecrofts. In order to house, display and boost space for his and other photographic troves, Pilara created a foundation and enlisted the help of Oakland based Envelope A+D architects. Today, the 28,000squarefoot Embarcadero warehouse gallery at Pier 24, which had been abandoned since 1980, hosts 20 visitors at a time, by appointment only. The triumphal march from Act II of Verdi’s Aida. Radames, captain of the Egyptian guards, arrives at Gate of Thebes.
Incandescent Aida With sets and costumes by Zandra Rhodes, the San Francisco Opera’s Egyptian-inspired classic promises pure spectacle BY DIANE DORRANS SAEKS
S
porting her trademark pink bob and turquoise glitter eye shadow, Zandra Rhodes bounds into the San Francisco Opera costume studio. She unrolls a peacock-blue cape, hand-painted with gold feathers. “It’s pure fantasy, over-the-top,” she says. “It brings out my love of bold color. I can’t wait to see this on stage.” The British-born designer’s vision of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, in partnership with the Houston Opera and English National Opera, makes its way to the West Coast this fall, and audiences are in for an opulent treat. Rhodes may have made her mark as a fashion name, but she’s also a master at manipulating rich tones and materials to achieve exciting, sun-struck staging. Garbed in striking hues, a veritable phalanx of Ethiopian and Egyptian soldiers, monarchs, priests, Nubian servants and dancing children populate the somber tale of forbidden love in the desert sands.
The color scheme is glamorous and regal: gold, vibrant aquamarine, lapis lazuli and intense orange. The 300 ensembles are hand-painted, embroidered, collaged, appliquéd, printed and pleated for maximum effect. A giant elephant—with a lustrous silk head and fluttering ears that seem to fill the stage—lumbers forward during the triumphal march in the second act. “Zandra’s work is pure theater, just like she is,” says San Francisco Opera Director David Gockley. “Her costumes and her design are bigger than life and full of fantasy. She’s perfect for making a big impact in a venue as grand as ours.” Simply said, it’s Pharaohs on acid. And, Rhodes has a long history of this kind of daring. Trained as a textile designer in London, her fabrics were originally considered too outrageous for traditional manufacturers, and she ventured out on her own in 1967. Rhodes presented her first collection in New York in 1969, and after it was featured in American Vogue, Henri Bendel and other tastemakers quickly picked up >>

her ground-breaking designs. Described by some as ethereal and raw, Rhodes’s garments have garnered a reputation for embellishment, original prints, and motifs inspired by Native American, Egyptian and Chinese cultures. A collection in the late ’70s had her crowned “the princess of punk” when she used beaded safety pins and holes to adorn her clothing. As part of that era’s new wave of fashion designers, Rhodes helped take envelope-pushing British fashion to the forefront. Freddie Mercury of the rock group Queen wore her now-famous “winged” outfit of white satin, while Diana, Princess of Wales, modeled an almost-demure, long-sleeved white dress with delicate tattoo-like markings on the sleeves. But it’s not all rock and royalty; women as diverse as Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Kylie Minogue, Bianca Jagger and Isabella Blow have partied in her creations, too. In the past few years, the popularity of Rhodes’s work has undergone a resurgence. Her vintage origami coats and layered caftans, collected by fellow designers Tom Ford and Anna Sui, now sell for thousands, and her latest pieces can be found at San Francisco’s Wilkes Bashford and Harvey Nichols in London. Going beyond ready-to-wear, Rhodes is

dipping into jewelry, china for Royal Doulton, furs for Pologeorgis and is even working on a limitededition line for MAC Cosmetics. Rhodes, who splits her time between Del Mar and the U.K. with her partner Salah Hassanein (a retired Warner Brothers executive), first ventured into theater with the San Diego Opera. She produced the sets and costumes for Mozart’s Magic Flute in 2001, followed by a second stint with Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers in 2004. She’s had a long, varied and fruitful career in the world of fashion. Just don’t expect her to stop now. “Designing is my life, it’s my passion,” says Rhodes. “Whether I’m in Southern California or in London, I am always sketching.” sfopera.org. •
CalifoRnia’S Hidden MaSTERPiECES Created after finishing a suite of decorative paintings for his patrons, this intimate portrait marks odilon Redon’s transition from the language of monochrome to a vibrant palette. Redon cleverly used untreated paper to serve as the tone and texture of skin in his study of the Baronne de Domecy. Surrounding the baroness’s face—her features defined in pencil—the fluid outlines of plants and flowers conjure a floating world, a dreamlike and mystical setting for the austere and detached specter of Redon’s principal subject. hic in a violet Kirstie Kelly dress, Katherine Ross strolls through her home, pointing out her collectables. She still remembers buying that set of limited-edition Christian Dior glasses on Avenue Montaigne in Paris, and the “tribe” of Skookum dolls were like her “little family” before she got married. Then we climb the twisting staircase and venture into her boudoir, where a folk art wedding table is adorned with sacred objects: a miniature jewelry box from when she was born; a silver wishbone from her dear friend Sandy Hill; a papier mâché vase made by her 5-year-old daughter Gabrielle. It’s no surprise that the former LVMH (Moët Hennessy/Louis Vuitton) vice president and her husband, Los Angeles County Museum of Art Director/CEO Michael Govan, share a highly evolved palate. Ross held court as head of public relations at the luxury goods conglomerate until January, 2009, and Govan was deputy director at the Guggenheim as well as president and director of Dia Art Foundation in New York before decamping to the Golden State. When the family relocated in 2006, Ross and Govan updated the 1920s museum-owned home to capture the modern, loft apartment-living they loved in New York. “When we moved into this house, every single window had a curtain,” says Ross. “We stripped them all bare.” Painting the walls white and staining the wood floors an ebony hue immediately transformed the character of the continued on page 174 three-bedroom Tudor home they share

the couple also likes to go out in l.A.—to catch a film at Arclight or grab a bite with friends at spots like silverlake’s barbrix or the oaks on franklin. “i go there every day,” she says of the gourmet market. “it’s kind of embarrassing.”
ry not to hold this bit of infor mation against the always exquisitely dressed diane Kruger: she doesn’t have a stylist. “i totally understand why actresses use them,” says the 34yearold German native. “some might not like clothes, or it’s just not easy. but i know very well what i like. And whether everybody else agrees with it or not, i want to be different.” to be fair, not many actresses can count fashion’s biggest names as close friends and ring them up (hallo, herr lagerfeld) when they need a stunning dress for, say, the sAG Awards or the oscars. you see, before she started doing films, the fineboned, blueeyed blonde was a model, so she knows how to wear clothes and has formed key relationships with designers. And she con tinues to make one bestdressed list after the other—sans stylist. “We can whip up dresses over email,” says designer Jason Wu, who made Kruger a brightpinkandblack gown for Cannes earlier this year. “that effortless collaboration is rare. she has impeccable taste and understands her body. there’s a sureness that is very refreshing. the way we work together reminds me of the days of Audrey hepburn and Givenchy or yves st. laurent and Catherine deneuve.” besides Wu, you’ll see Kruger on the red carpet in oscar de la renta, isabel Marant, balenciaga or, of course, Chanel. And lately, Calvin Klein. she’s the face of the brand’s new perfume, beauty.
diane Kruger was born in the small village of Algermissen in northern Germany. she spent summers studying ballet in london and left for Paris, when she was 16, to model. she still has an apartment there. “it’s definitely where i can see myself growing old,” she says. And, it’s where the trilingual actress learned french. “Parisians can be very nice and make the effort to speak English for a minute, but they switch back. you know, french boyfriends help a lot in that department,” she says slyly. (no doubt, a husband can, too; Kruger was previously married to actor Guillaume Canet.) Karl lagerfeld is her neighbor in Paris, but the famously abstemious designer doesn’t come around for dinner l.A.style. “he never, ever would eat what i put into my mouth!” Kruger laughs. following her breakthrough role as an antinazi German actress during WWii in Quentin tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, in which she effortlessly switched between languages, Kruger shot two films. in Unknown White Male, she’s an illegal immigrant from bosnia who saves costar liam neeson’s life. “he’s a fantastic actor. We have a great relationship in the movie that’s not romantic, but sort of this deep friendship with trust.” the film also has January Jones, who plays neeson’s wife and is now one of Kruger’s dinner guests in l.A. in Inhale, Kruger’s dying daughter needs a new lung. “it took me by surprise how much the movie affected me, quite frank ly,” says the actress, who met with patients and doctors to research her role. “When you go into a hospital and see these parents wait ing for a match, whether it’s a lung or a liver, it’s just heartbreaking.” this fall, she makes Special Forces, filmmaker stéphane rybo jad’s feature about a reallife french journalist who was kidnapped
“the way diane and i work together reminds me of the days of audrey hepburn and givenchy,” says designer jason wu. “she’s perfect for it,” says francisco Costa, the label’s creative director. “diane embodies everything that the fragrance represents—elegance, sophistication, timelessness and beauty.” “i really responded to the Calvin woman. And, the clothes are understated. they leave a lot to the imagination, which is how i dress—i don’t like the cleavage and the short skirts so much,” ex plains Kruger, on the phone from Vancouver, where she and her boyfriend of four years, actor Joshua Jackson, have just arrived to get him settled for the next season of his television show, “fringe.” in the past year, the couple bought and renovated a “not huge, very cozy” house in hollywood that they’ve decorated themselves with antiques, like a rare 1910s louis Vuitton steamer trunk they use as a coffee table. “After working in so many foreign places all the time, it’s nice to just be home, read a book, not do too much. i love to host dinner parties.” her gettogethers are group efforts; friends come over early and are each given a task: chop those carrots, rinse the arugula. “it’s very European, i guess. it threw a few people off in l.A.,” she laughs. “And now they all love it.” (her latest meal, from a Jamie oliver recipe, was roast of lamb with minted peas and carrots, and rhubarb crumble.)
by the taliban in Afghanistan. Kruger, who appears with djimon hounsou in the movie, traveled to Kabul to prepare for her part. “so many movies about this war are big hollywood productions, where they shoot comfortably in Morocco. We’re filming in tajikistan and the himalayas. it’s going to be rough, but it’s exciting to do it with someone who knows what he’s really talking about,” she says of rybojad, who has made three documentaries about the conflict. so, in a few months, don’t be surprised if you open the tabloids to find paparazzi pictures of Kruger walking around l.A. dressed like a war journalist. “i’ve always been inspired by movies,” she says. “When i was about 10, i was obsessed with Dirty Dancing. My mom made me the dress that baby wears in the big finale.” After Basterds wrapped, she did “that whole ’40s lipstick, that certain silhouette, for months.” And, Kruger got her ears pierced and bought the same doc Martens she stomped around in for her role in Unknown White Male. “i’m not that type of girl, but they look cool. Maybe because when i play a character, to a certain extent i have to really like it, whether she’s a nice person or an evil person. And maybe i don’t want to let go of her for a while.” •

When buying boyfriend jeans, we exclaim, “i’ll live in them.” slipping on a snug sweater, we sigh, “i never want to take it off.” We see our clothing, like our homes, as protective, expressive and personal. nowhere is that line more blurred than for the fashion designers themselves, who approach the creation of their personal living spaces with an unique sensibility. “You take the same things into consideration: color, balance, scale. But it’s a longer-term commitment,” explains eyewear designer Blake Kuwahara. “the overall process is universal, but you adapt to the context.” Just like their clothing and accessory collections, the homes vary greatly for golden state sartorialists such as Johnson hartig of libertine, lubov and max azria of BcBgmaXaZria, max azria and hervé legér, and Kuwahara of Focus group West. one element remains constant: that elusive casual-yet-upscale california vibe.

“Interior design is just more forgiving and natural for me,” says Libertine’s Johnson Hartig, who exhibits an almost preternatural penchant for interiors. “I use my house as a laboratory. I’m always at antique shops, flea markets or junkyards, looking out for cool things and then re-hanging pictures or painting rooms in different colors. I’m amazed when someone can design a line of clothing but can’t decorate.” Hartig had an immediate vision for his 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom Hancock Park home. “It’s sparse and clean with stark white walls and shiny white floors. Once you investigate, there are classical tableaus. It’s a big mash-up of styles,” he says. “I like mixing high and low, classical and modern, rhythm and texture and balance.” In fact, when his living room walls were hung haphazardly in salon style, Hartig painted humorous images by “masters” to place among works by known artists such as Damien Hirst.

When BCBG’s Director of Visual Merchandising Aly Daly shifted careers to interior design, her former bosses, husband-and-wife team Lubov and Max Azria, immediately hired her to help them appoint their Holmby Hills estate. After all, she already understood their aesthetic. There is an undeniable link for this duo between fashion design and decorating their residence. “For both,” explains Lubov, “we take inspiration from global travels and our everyday lives.” Up and downstairs, poppy, jubilant objects are set against clean white backgrounds—the majority of which were designed by the couple, from their favorite custom crystal waterfall chandelier to the chrome garlands—placed throughout the 17-bedroom, 22-bathroom house. (Other beloved elements include Japanese gardens and a lifesize orange ceramic horse in the living room.) Just as they might approach their related, albeit disparate, fashion lines for different customers, the couple regarded the home’s two levels as separate entities: The bottom floor—used mainly for entertaining and hosting visitors—was designed to mimic a hotel, while the upper level revolves around family comforts. As Lubov explains, “The design of the interiors reflects our love of art and eye for whimsical details.”
FROM TOP The light fixtures and poufs in the pool house are a nod to Max Azria’s North African roots. A Jonathan Adler custom-designed sofa and pillows in the living room. Lubov’s collection of starburst mirrors—some new, some antique—add sparkle to the walls.

For Blake Kuwahara, starting with an overall vision is the linchpin of design. He would know: Associated mostly with eyewear, he also dabbles in apparel and interiors. “Designers are very visually aware, so the way they surround themselves in their homes is a reflection of who they are,” he explains. “Just like we accessorize fashion with a special stitch, button or appliqué, we accessorize our homes with seasonal elements like throws or certain flowers. But, a home is an ongoing process. The shelf life is much longer, so there’s a very personal connection to it.” Kuwahara takes cues from his 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom Sausalito residence’s own hilltop surroundings and structure. Built in 1931 with high-vaulted ceilings and a Bay view, the Mediterranean-inspired house is accented with rustic-chic furnishings, ceramic pots and paintings sourced from flea markets in the South of France. “The first floor is very modern and minimal,” he describes. “The second and third are more time-worn. My style of dress is minimal, but I like vintage leather jackets and jewelry, so it’s similar in that it’s eclectic.”

Telluride, Colorado continues its reign as the peak of chic BY NORA ZELEVANSKY

elluride is an unlikely fashion hub. When viewed from a descending transparent gondola, the former silver mining town evokes a western movie set. While the historic center offers a few blocks of shops and restaurants, a smattering of boutiques and Ralph Lauren’s enormous Ridgeway ranch on the outskirts of town suggest something sophisticated nestled against those majestic San Juan Mountains. In mid-winter, snow bunnies arrive to traverse the slopes, aprèsski at Allred’s (565 Mountain Village Blvd., 970-728-7474) and then defrost beside cozy fireplaces. Throughout spring and summer, 30 various festivals drive in the droves, from Bluegrass to celebrity-filled Telluride Film to the season’s last late-September hurrah, Blues & Brews. In quieter autumn, though, when the aspen trees turn golden, just before—or just after—that first snowfall, Telluride is an evolving, peaceful retreat perched at 9,000 feet. A
gondola ride away in Mountain Village sits the new Capella Telluride Hotel & Residences (568 Mountain Village Blvd., 970-369-0880). Anything but rustic, the suites are unpretentious in neutral tones with wood touches. Each guestroom is assigned a “personal assistant,” who— among other things—will stock the fridge pre-arrival. The attendants welcome challenging requests as extravagant as live reindeer at Christmas. (True story.) At The Spa, sample yoga classes and seasonal treatments like the Hiker’s Heaven or Spirit of the Mountain massage with lavender, sweet basil and jasmine. Next, sip Constellation Ale created exclusively for Suede Bar by local Smugglers Brew Pub. At Onyx restaurant, gobble new Argentine chef Gabriel Kolofon’s autumnal dishes like Yukon Gold potato puree and fall-harvested mushrooms—a local specialty. Before descending into town, visit adjacent shop, Telluride Naturals (565 Mountain Village Blvd., 970-728-7357), for Colorado-made products like Telluride Vodka (corn-based and distilled with mountain stream water) or fragrant soaps and lotions from Bluecorn Naturals, Black Horse Essentials and Tomboy. Local goods are also for sale every Friday at the farmers’ market, from June through October.
Past the market stalls, shop Colorado Avenue’s stores: Owned by resident fashion expert Kristin Holbrook, Two Skirts (127 W. Colorado Ave., 970-728-6828) sells big names like Marc by Marc Jacobs and independent brands like Linea Pelle—plus a nod to part-time Telluride local Bobbi Brown with a giant makeup display. Regulars frequent Cashmere Red (221 E. Colorado Ave., 970-728-8088) for sweaters and scarves, while brand-new Gardenstore (164 C Society Dr., 970-728-0534) sells Mistral beauty products and K. Hall diffusers in addition to floral wares. And, off the main drag, Scarpe (250 E. Pacific Ave., 970-728-1513) stocks ranges from Catherine Malandrino dresses to Frye boots and even kid’s Frye at the adjoining hipster baby store. Take your worked-up appetite to new gourmet cafe, The Butcher & The Baker (217 E. Colorado Ave., 970-728-2899), Telluride’s down-home answer to Dean & DeLuca. Nearby, longtime java destination, The Steaming Bean (221 W. Colorado Ave., 970-3695575) was recently re-hauled. Locals say the espresso and decor are improved—though the addition of a full bar has been part of its newfound excitement. The Chop House restaurant at The New Sheridan (231 W. Colorado Ave., 800-200-1891)— a favorite bar—was also just revamped. •

The Ritz-Carlton (ritzcarlton.com) is truly the most star-studded of the city’s hotels. Just steps away from Red Square, this luxury getaway is impressive by any standards: suites, spa, staff, rooftop lounge...The lobby restaurant’s buffet breakfast, with an unlimited supply of Russia’s finest red caviar, is a must. And its view of the Kremlin? That can’t be beat. “Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style,” Sept. 16-Jan. 2, Phoenix Art Museum; phxart.org. •

ascinating” is the adjective I use to describe bringing my personal wardrobe home earlier this year in “Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style”—the kick-off event for the 20th season of Russian Fashion Week. Debuting at the Russian Fashion Museum, this was the first-ever exhibition of Western couture to take place in the capital city. Here, my insider guide to the thriving metropolis: LUNCH To catch up with girlfriends or take a meeting, I head to Vogue Café. Bookshelves stacked with hundreds of issues of Vogue— mostly the Russian edition—line the walls, floor to ceiling. The delicious salad made with sweet Kamchatka crab is to die for—as is the cranberry-mint tea. SHOP The chicest boutique, hands-down, is Podium (podiumfashion.com). Owned by fashionista Polina Kitsenko, the space is filled with the coolest designs and jewelry, including Europe’s largest selection—outside of Venice—of creations by Attilio Codognato. And TSUM, Russia’s version of Bergdorf Goodman, not only carries world-famous brands, but also stocks the creations of talented, young Russian designers. My favorites are Vika Gazinskaya and Oleg Ovsiev. If you want to combine shopping with drinks, visit Denis Simachev’s eponymous boutique in the center of town (denissimachev.com). After trying on his Soviet symbolism-inspired wares, head upstairs for a well-mixed cocktail. DINNER Café Pushkin is the place to go for the most authentic Russian fare. Just walking through the doors, you genuinely feel transported to another time. The interiors are reminiscent of the early 20th century, and the most attentive waitstaff in Moscow, dressed like 18th-century Cossacks, ensures plates and glasses are never empty. STAY

Manhattan Transfer Pre-war? Post-mod? Up or Downtown, there’s a buzzing New York hotel to suit the style of every Golden State traveler BY NATHAN COOPER

alifornians in a New York state of mind have always had an array of places to hang their hats, and in the last year, the choices have become exceedingly enticing. Here, from rarefied restorations to new and notable, a handful of the city’s best:
Uptown Tucked away on a side street off of Madison Avenue (and just a short stretch from Barneys), The Lowell blends into the Upper East Side like a sublimely broken-in Birkin bag. Channeling a posh pre-war apartment, the hotel’s refurbished Manhattan Suite is now peppered with original artwork and books. 28 E. 63rd St., 212-838-1400; lowell hotel.com. • Looming over Fifth Avenue in resplendent limestone, The Peninsula stands with hushed elegance amid midtown’s non-stop hustle. Of course, clients return for the plush appointments, but what really sets this beacon apart—evident from the concierge desk to the Salon de Ning rooftop cocktail lounge—is its Hong Kongstyle service. 700 5th Ave., 212-956-2888; peninsula.com. • Think polish, not radical re-do, for the multi-milliondollar renovation of the beloved Hôtel Plaza Athénée. A new look comes to the lobby and guestrooms (now with larger bathrooms)—plus, the addition of four deluxe suites. 37 E. 64th St., 212-734-9100; plaza-athenee.com. • For those hoping to balance sophisticated swank with access to a swath of soothing greenery, the Jumeirah Essex House on Central Park South is perfectly positioned. A $90 million renovation to the 1931 property now yields an Art Deco masterpiece with up-to-the-nanosecond amenities. 160 Central Park South, 212-484-5120; jumeirah.com.

returned to the East Coast, she went to yoga every day with her aunt, Rory Kennedy. Back at Harvard, she found the only yoga studio in town. Before long, Townsend helped create a program at the university where students practiced on thick wrestling mats. She never thought she could actually become an instructor. “I was going to be a lawyer or a doctor,” she says, “but I knew I would probably fail organic chemistry.” After college, Townsend moved to L.A. and started working as a business analyst, telling companies what they were doing wrong. Her only happy moments were during weekend yoga classes. Over time, she took a teacher training workshop, studied with Erich Schiffmann and assisted on a retreat in Tahiti. It wasn’t long before she quit her day job to teach full time. “My parents thought I was totally crazy,” says Townsend. “They were like, ‘When are you going to get a real job?’” Lately, the only things slowing her down have been injuries. Townsend underwent three incredibly painful knee surgeries last year, though the recovery time gave her the opportunity to use her “business brain,” as she calls it, to open Up Dog Fitness. “I’m happier now more than ever,” Townsend says, smiling. “There’s something stable and wholesome about connecting with yourself in a yoga studio that helps you get through the joys and sufferings of life. It’s definitely part of my family’s legacy to better the lives of people.” 8599 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, 310-3607200; updogfitness.com. •

with Gabrielle, and Ariana, 15, Govan’s daughter from his previous marriage. Each room blends personal objects and classic design—offset with eye-catching artwork. Walk into the foyer and you’ll spy a Korean moon jar next to a dreamy photograph by Catherine Opie, or a perky sunset print by Andy Warhol hanging above a
white Eero Saarinen table surrounded by office chairs in vivid, sun-burnt orange. “The idea is that it’s timeless, not some ’60s minimalism,” says Govan. “If you pare things down in a certain way, you often see more, not less.” In particular, the public rooms feature a compendium of such classic furnishings with thoughtful color-bursts of art. An iconic Castiglioni Arco lamp drapes over a Charles sofa by B&B Italia in the living room—next to a Brody Condon modified computer game of Elvis gyrating against a hot-pink background. Another Saarinen table rests in front of a Warhol Camouflage print in the breakfast nook. In the library, two soft-purple Arne Jacobsen egg chairs face each other, next to another Condon creation—this time, of Timothy Leary’s pal Baba Ram Dass. Of all the home’s art, Govan seems partial to the digital pieces. “People don’t realize how powerful it is to live with,” he says. “It’s the way of the world now. Ariana makes videos with her friends for fun. And, like David Hockney, Gabrielle is drawing on her iPad.” The family initially vowed to hang only one artist in each room. “It’s about being minimal and specific,” says Govan. “It’s not using art as decoration—that’s the key for us. For example, I would never put flowers in front of a work.” Citing a strong point of view, the couple doesn’t use decorators, preferring instead to buy multiples of their favorites. “We like what we like,” says Ross. They estimate that they own something like 12 Saarinen tables and five Charles sofas among their three homes. (The family has an apartment in N.Y. that they now rent out and a house in the Hamptons.) Other objects Ross simply purchased on the spot. “I saw it, and I said, ‘I’ll take it,’” she says, smiling at the “very James Bond” Willy Rizzo coffee table she discovered at Blackman Cruz. The circular disc opens to form a bar, and a bucket-shaped hole is filled with ice and Champagne. Entertaining is key. At LACMA, museum directors have a long history of wooing and socializing from Hancock Park. Whether cocktails for 100, an artist’s lecture or a quiet dinner for 18, Govan and Ross needed a large, open kitchen that could accommodate caterers, plenty of
storage and a backyard that could be tented. Before he passed away, New York event kingpin Robert Isabell even drew a floor plan for Ross to help her figure out how many people she could actually fit in the house for a dinner party. The word on the street is that GovanRoss soirees are as unfussy as their home. “It was artistic but low-key,” recalls one guest who attended the LACMA holiday party. “It felt very neighborhood-y. There were people draped over the armchairs of the sofa—drinking, chatting. You could tell that everyone was there because they liked them, not just to do business.” “It’s not so much about the art on the walls,” LACMA and MOCA trustee Jane Nathanson adds. “They always have stunning flowers, a fun mix of people, and a relaxed atmosphere. They live artfully.” •
