75 TRAVEL
Welcome to our premiere spin around the Golden State.
For many gents, deciding what tie to wear in the morning is easier than which car to take. In Beverly Hills, one collector deliberates among Clark Gable’s ’56 MercedesBenz, a ’29 Duesenberg and the world’s first Shelby Cobra.
Whether for an adrenaline-raising desert rush, or the ultimate in relaxation, the middle of nowhere never looked so luxurious as in the rocky wilds of Southern Utah; Plus, Banana Republic’s main man gives C a tour of his neighborhood.
Boys will be boys, right? The latest in cars, spirits, gadgets, grooming and sports; Plus, C for Men’s locals-only black book from two California guys who have street smarts in spades.
27 STYLE California classics, from timeless aviators to the best two-button blazers; Weekend looks straight off the runway; Neiman Marcus’ discerning men’s fashion director opens up his L.A. file; Trend report: steel-faced watches with reptile straps.
80 C CALIFORNIA 51 MENU San Diego’s artisanal beer scene gets super-crafty with unorthodox methods: Bourbon barrel-ageing, Belgian yeasts and local foraging missions produce cellar-worthy blends with sips as coveted as cult Cabernet; Plus, a date-night cookbook sure to please.

hen C launched five years ago, the concept was simple: a magazine to represent the unique California lifestyle. No one was covering the region as a whole, and we had a perfect opportunity to showcase the best of the Golden State.
With all the focus initially on the women, we realized it was time to share the
sandbox. The California man is a trailblazer, a trendsetter, a tastemaker. We wanted to create an issue specifically for him. From the way men dress (a mix of relaxed elegance) to the ways they play (outside adventure being a must) to the forward-thinking or throwback ways they live, there are so many fascinating stories to show and tell… So, our editorial team scoured the state. We asked around. And we’ve narrowed it down: Who better to kick off our C for Men launch—to depict the ultimate Golden State gent—than actor Ewan McGregor (“Spotting Ewan,” p.54)? Cool to the core, this husband and father of three now calls Los Angeles home. Whether riding motorcycles through the back roads of Malibu or taking his daughters to school, this Scotsman has truly embraced the spirit of California. Kid Rock, a Detroit-er through and through, can still appreciate life on our shores (“House of Rock,” p.62). His Malibu home is a testament to hip beach style—albeit with exotic collections arrayed, courtesy of friend and decorator, Martyn LawrenceBullard. “American Badass,” indeed! Another all-American, Greg Lauren has a lot to express (“Common Thread,” p.70). Through his art, he shares his story of family, childhood dreams, and the influences and elements that make the man. His current work, made entirely out of paper (though you would swear his bomber jacket was crafted from the most supple of leathers) has been garnering rave reviews—and many a collector along the way. And let’s not forget all the toys! From paddleboards to cars (both classic and current), from the ultimate garage to the best watches, from the tastiest spirits to the most sophisticated of suits, C for Men

aird Hamilton has been a surfing hero since the ’80s, securing his reputation as the king of the big wave after a death-defying drop into Tahiti’s Teahupo’o break in August, 2000. These days, the Malibu resident is versed in almost every watersport. One of the first athletes to popularize the ancient Hawaiian practice of stand-up paddleboarding, the pro is often spotted riding up and down the California coast. ruising past real-estate investor Bruce Meyer’s house, you’d never guess that at the end of a normal-looking Los Angeles driveway is a garage that holds some of the coolest cars—plus a few motorcycles—in California (or the world, for that matter). Meyer, whose family started Geary’s, the beloved Beverly Hills emporium, built onto his home’s existing storage structure, and the space now houses the first Shelby Cobra ever made (appropriately, it has the number “1” painted on the hood); there’s the last car Clark Gable owned—a handsome 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC—which cost $17,000 then, when you could get a Rolls for
BRUCE MEYER’S TIPS FOR THE ULTIMATE GARAGE • Never approach collecting as an investment. Buy a car because you love it. • Drive your vehicle at least every couple of months—that’s what it’s for, after all. It needs to be exercised, and its fluids have to circulate. • Don’t hose cars down. To clean, just wipe them down with a wet cloth or Meguiar’s Quik Detailer.
around $10,000; a flame-emblazoned 1932 Ford hot rod coupe; and a grand 1929 Duesenberg one-off (now you know where the term “it’s a duzey” originated). Add a silver 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa racecar, a 1914 Indian motorcycle and a handful of other beauties—plus walls covered in all manner of memorabilia—and that’s one fine cross-section of auto history. Meyer politely declines to reveal how many cars he owns, but let’s just say he has plans to open a private museum just for his racecars. He also can’t tell you which is his most prized. “If I had a favorite, I would only own one car,” says the collector. And they’re not just sitting pretty in his garage but hitting the road. Meyer motors them everywhere—from the classic car show at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank to European rallies. As he puts it, aside from just owning them, “the fun part is the drive.” •

Is it really possible to make high-quality U.S.-made menswear?
Surly Navigator An industrial-designed, water-resistant, all-purpose jacket. MADE IN THE USA
That’s what Anthony Mazzei and Chad Hurley set out to do when they started Hlaska in San Francisco five years ago. Sure, it’s difficult. But when you believe in America and what she has to offer, it’s not so hard. That’s why all of our apparel is made here — much of it in our Burlingame, California factory. So, to answer the question, “Is it possible?”
Of course it is. Welcome to Hlaska.

La Quinta Resort & Club
Head pro at Tennis Magazine’s #1-ranked U.S. resort, Rancho Valencia’s John Delille knows all the best moves. Here, his three top tips that will never leave you playing ‘first ball in.’ 1. Relax. When I see club players getting too uptight, it means they aren’t following through and concentrating on the quality of their shots. The more relaxed you are, the more fluid your strokes will be. You will play better. 2. Don’t overthink it. When the point is in progress, just react to it. Ready yourself for the next shot and work the point. 3. Have fun! Don’t take it too seriously—unless maybe there is money on the line. Getting mad at yourself doesn’t help matters; it only gives the opponent more confidence. And, frustration at the ball, or the racquet, or the sun, is counterproductive. Enjoy the fresh air, exercise and some healthy competition. 5921 Valencia Cir., Rancho Santa Fe, 858-756-1123; ranchovalencia.com.
The sunken, hacienda-style clubhouse at La Quinta overlooks 23 courts.
Since the 1970s, La Quinta Resort & Club has been the desert destination for the country’s top players, at one point offering every competition surface: grass, hardtop and clay. Take it from former U.S. Davis Cup captain and head pro Tom Gorman. 1. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to do Tom some basic stretching exercises. During Gorman your warm-up, try and clear the net by at least five feet. 2. Value the importance of making a high percentage of first serves. Always let your partner know where you’re serving the ball. 3. Remember that more points are controlled with both players at net. But most important…choose a great partner. 49-499 Eisenhower Dr., La Quinta, 760-564-4111; laquintaresort.com.

Nestled against a maple, oak and pine tree forest, the seven bucolic courts at Meadowood Napa Valley are overseen by Doug King. 1. There is only one moment of force in the game (when you drive the ball). The rest of the game is a choreographed flow of delicate motion. 2. Learn to stroke and not swing. There is no “swinging” in tennis. 3. Avoid thinking the game is comprised of various parts. Top players see the game as a whole. 900 Meadowood Ln., St. Helena, 707-9633646; meadowood.com.

wan McGregor is calling from London, a Scottish burr warming up his voice. After arriving from New York, the actor is fresh from his first day on the set of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, a satirical comedy directed by Lasse Hallström that will also star Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas. Later this year, you can catch him in Beginners, with Christopher Plummer; Haywire, directed by Steven Soderbergh; and I Love You Phillip Morris, opposite Jim Carrey. If there’s a bass line that thrums through McGregor’s work, then it’s one of vulnerability—even when carefully hidden—lending a kind of winning innocence to his roles, most brilliant in those that could be considered cynical (as in the Hitchcock-influenced Shallow Grave, McGregor’s 1994 feature film debut) or caddish (opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma). capsule of McGregor’s appeal: the hopelessromantic lead with his soft, drippy heart. McGregor grew up in Crieff, a Scottish spa village. He eventually moved to London to study acting at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. “London was a culture shock because I come from a very small town and left when I was 16, spending a year in another smallish town,” says McGregor, who knew from a young age that he wanted to act. “It’s very difficult to leave Scotland when you’re Scottish. It’s quite a big deal. There’s this kind of culture of representing Scotland by staying there, and I totally respect that. But I like to represent it by working all over the place.” After winning a role on “Lipstick on Your Collar,” a British television miniseries, McGregor left Guildhall before graduation. “I couldn’t quite believe it, and on the other hand, I was absolutely ready,” says McGregor. “I felt quite arrogant and self-assured, and I thought, ‘Yeah, this is exactly where I should be’…Of course, I didn’t work for six months after and almost slit my wrists.” In 1996, his role in Trainspotting, which told a propulsive tale of heroin addicts in Edinburgh, hit a cultural nerve and “knocked me up the ladder a little bit,” he admits. ince McGregor has decried the soullessness of “the industry” in Hollywood in interviews past, it’s surprising to discover the 39-year-old has lived in Los Angeles for two years with his family: wife, Eve; and their three girls, a 14-year-old, and two 8-year-olds—one adopted from Mongolia. “I think it’s popular not to like Los Angeles. I used to rag on it when I was a young actor. The idea in people’s minds is it’s shallow and all glitz and parties,” he admits. An older and mellower McGregor appreciates its lesser-publicized charms. “I’ve got really solid friends in L.A. It’s getting more and more interesting, filling up with different subcultures. I’m not sure it’s forever, but I’m certainly enjoying it for now. There’s a kind of American importance placed upon neighborliness and community that I really like,

toos, the piece fully depicts the mood of the house. The living space continues to the open kitchen and dining area with a double fireplace for chilly coastal evenings. Stainless steel appliances and counters are juxtaposed with the natural teak ceiling, floors and cupboards. Under a lofty pitched roof, the long dining table has plenty of space for big meals with lots of band members. “The antique-style floors have been stained black, while I kept the walls white to reflect the bright California beach sun that streams into the rooms,” explains Lawrence-Bullard. “I added a global portfolio of architectural elements and furnishings and drew on Rock’s influences and enthusiasms.” On the living room walls hang black-and-white photos of Rock’s musical heroes: Marvin Gaye, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Louis Armstrong and Willie Nelson. They’re flanked by antique sitars above a long white sofa filled with comfortable cushions. Also filling the house with an exotic mix of texture and color are Moroccan textiles. Lawrence-Bullard was asked to add a screening room, gym and game room downstairs, as well as furnish four guest bedrooms for visiting family and friends. He kept to the same gypset style, with beds dressed in a collection of fabrics from India, Guatemala and Turkey or Lawrence-Bullard’s own Indonesian-inspired designs. Rock, who can often be spotted paddleboarding in the local waters, enjoys his off-stage life in his private palace: “I love this house. It feels like nothing bad ever happens here.” •

I
always say I’m one of the luckiest bastards on the planet,” says five-time Grammy Award-nominee Kid Rock. And after countless hit records, the Michigan-based musician had everything a star could want—except a Malibu crash pad. It wasn’t until he met actress and Playboy Playmate Pamela Anderson, who needed a place in L.A. because of her television career, that Rock joined the celebrity-filled enclave. Anderson, a longtime friend of Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, brought the British decorator in to outfit their new house by the beach. Even after the couple split mid-project, Rock asked Lawrence-Bullard to continue on with the house. The designer knew just how to provide the right amount of California rock ’n’ roll cool. His client list reads like a Greatest Hits playlist: Cher, Elton John, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Christina Aguilera. “I realized quite quickly that Rock needed a sanctuary where he could write music,” explains the designer. “I brought in deep sofas for easy living and added great outdoor areas where he could relax and smoke cigars.” The decorator pulled out all the stops to give Rock a home that lived and breathed rock ’n’ roll, along with the ethnicmodern touches that make Lawrence-Bullard one of the city’s most sought-after tastemakers. The house took about six months to finish, but he says, “I shopped for him for another six months all over the world—in Paris, London, New York, and, of course, Los Angeles.” The three-level home is completely hidden from the street and surrounded by palm trees. Its entryway meanders through a wooden gate and into a plant-filled courtyard. In contrast to the cold, snowy winters at Rock’s other residence in Detroit, MI, the influence here is tropical (think the Bahamas or Indonesia). And for good reason: This is Rock’s West Coast hideout, where bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mötley Crüe join him in late-night jam sessions. It’s a place to catch up with his son, Robert Junior. Plus, the upstairs recording studio is the perfect spot for Rock, who writes and produces most of his work himself, to prepare his next album. “I created a master bedroom centered by a large four-poster bed draped in white muslin, hung from a high, wood-paneled ceiling,” says Lawrence-Bullard. “He is a sexy, single rock star, after all,” he adds. The room adjoins a large, eclectically furnished living space where a black grand piano— formerly Elton John’s—sits in the corner. eople actually think my life is like those ads, mostly because they’re so strong and well-done. That’s the genius of my uncle,” says artist Greg Lauren—yes, that Lauren— Ralph’s nephew. “He has made that fantasy so real. Part of what I’ve set out to do is celebrate it, but also to question it.” Negotiating the disparities between his family’s image of polo-playing perfection with his own L.A. life as an artist has become the stuff of Lauren’s creative exploration. Throughout his work, his interest in reality versus apparition has manifested itself in a series of projects— from paintings of heroic imagery, to portraits of African children, to Lauren taking the stage as an actor. Each step of the way, he has been fascinated by the irony of the hero’s un-heroic moments. His own childhood pastiche is partly to blame. “My Dad [Jerry Lauren, Executive Vice President of Men’s Design at Ralph Lauren] gave me this vintage Cub Scouts shirt. It was perfectly faded, had all the right badges and was of very high quality. I was never a Cub Scout, but I wore that shirt with pride and knew it meant something.” As expected, Lauren’s sartorial relationship is steeped in complexity. “It has always been such an important part of creating my own self-image and being able to control it,” he says. Confronting his dependency on clothing, or in other words, his past, Lauren took on the laborious task of reconstructing the garments that have shaped his life—dis-honorable uniform included—out of Japanese paper for an exhibit last summer entitled “Alteration.” “I used the paper that was meant to protect and wrap the expensive paper. It was the cheap, blue-collar paper, but I was so drawn to its texture,” he says. Painting, distressing and sewing the garments by hand allowed Lauren to exist in the grey area of artistic realism. The double-breasted jackets and tuxedos were so well executed, most people confused them
for the real thing. “I was trying to create a timeline of memories for anyone who could connect with these works, whether it was a three-piece suit your grandfather wore or a hooded raincoat from college,” he says. In one display for the exhibition, Lauren grouped 15 white dinner jackets together and used them as a screen. Projected onto them was a 12-minute loop of his favorite scene from To Catch a Thief, because, he explains, “Even Cary Grant wants to be Cary Grant in this movie.” Similar in purpose to his previous work, Lauren’s artistic clothing is a response to the idea of apparel as a façade and his refusal to accept anything at face value. “I learned how to sew to create sculptures true to the way the real garments are made,” he says. “I don’t think art has to be disturbing to be effective. There is meaning in subtlety.” Not surprisingly, the 40-year old could turn the point of a peak lapel without breaking a sweat. As if he had come to terms with the power of his subject, Lauren made the natural transition one day from paper to fabric at his Hollywood loft-studio. His first collection of wearable jackets—and they are a collection, numbered and signed the way an artist would a painting—were made using vintage military duffle bags, leaving platoon numbers and battle scars on the outer army-green canvas. As the pieces are unlike anything on the rack at Ralph Lauren, his family members are eager spectators to Lauren’s spontaneity. “My background has been both a blessing and curse,” says Lauren, “but, thankfully, it has Please handle with inspired me.” Lauren has gone on care: DB Tux, 2009. to create a series of one-of-a-kind Oil on paper, thread and buttons. men’s and women’s blazers, experimenting with new fabrics like twill and silk. The effort has not been lost on the business side; Maxfield, among other high-end retailers, has shown strong interest in picking up his latest collection. “Right now, I feel like an artist moving into a new medium…it just happens to be the one in which I was born to work.” •

or anyone who has ever contemplated an active escape to the otherworldly peace, quiet and grandeur of Utah’s canyon country—one that goes beyond dusty campsites and butaneburner cuisine—the masterminds behind Aman Resorts offer a fitting retreat. The second stateside property (a getaway in Jackson Hole being the first) in the predominantly Asia-based luxury hotel group’s portfolio, Amangiri is a subduedbut-awesome cluster of stone-and-glass suites standing in perfect accord with its surroundings at the foot of a giant, undulating desert mesa. It’s also an unrivaled jumping-off point for some of the most spectacular sightseeing in the West. With national parks like Glen and Bryce Canyons, and monuments such as Rainbow Bridge and Grand Staircase-Escalante only a short drive away, Amangiri, which opened at the end of last year, boasts a serious list of outdoor options by land (adrenalineinducing sports such as biking, desert trekking, rock climbing and canyoneering); by lake (boat tours and bass-angling on Lake Powell); and even by air (hot-air balloons, helicopters and planes). The resort’s staff—which seems to have collectively banned the word “no” from its vocabulary—stands ready to steer patrons through southern Utah’s wilderness. Then again, there’s a lot to be said for just relaxing at the pool—a sprawling turquoise curve of cool water wrapped
around the jutting point of a mesa— or unwinding in one of the resort’s modern suites. However impressive the stone floors, concrete walls and rawhide furniture, none of the design elements impedes the main attraction: the views, revealed by fully retractable, floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Many rooms even have rooftop decks—ideal for taking in the spectacular display of stars in the night sky. But all of this is still an exercise in subverted expectation—an attunement back to nature. Turning off a two-lane highway, guests creep up a winding road and into the foothills. Rounding the last bend, perhaps anticipating an imposing architectural announcement,
one meets a smooth concrete mass looming over a scraggy patch of arid turf. The main arrival court is defined by pale rock steps and a sparse landing dwarfed by a formation of layered earth jutting up into the hills. Walking through Amangiri’s mostly open-air passageways, pairs of cement walls guide the eye forward and out over the sweeping terrain. There’s a sense of slipping—like vanishing through one of the area’s famous slot canyons. The message here is clear: Every inch of this property is designed, ultimately, to disappear into the natural landscape. One Kayenta Rd., Canyon Point, Utah, 435675-3999; amanresorts.com. •

course, the fog.” FULL STACK Bechelli’s isn’t anything fancy, and

anywhere else.” But McGregor has grown to love the natural splendor of the outdoors here—“motorcycling on the canyon roads in Malibu and Topanga,” and hiking at Will Rogers State Park with his family. While his girls spend summers in France (McGregor’s wife is French) and in Scotland with his parents, he’s pleased to have them here otherwise. “More so than at the schools in Britain, where, if you’re really good at something, you get picked on. Here, if you’re really bad at something, you get picked on,” he says. “I like that about America. There’s a culture of being supportive of one another. It may sound liberal, hippie, kind of leftytype, but I feel it really works, and the kids really respond to it.” A home in California could be a counterweight to McGregor’s immersing work as an actor, which can be as dislocating as it is exhilarating. he has traveled distant galaxies—via blue screen—as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars movies. In the upcoming I Love You Phillip Morris, he’s Jim Carrey’s jailhouse lover. In Angels & Demons, sequel to the Da Vinci Code, he turned up in Vatican City with a pitch-perfect performance as the Pope’s right-hand man in a plot so overwrought and Byzantine it almost turns to ham. McGregor could be on the set today for a movie that he signed on for months ago, with no idea of when and how it will turn out, interrupted by a publicity junket for work he did years ago (as was the case when the Star Wars films were released). “You spend all this energy and thought and effort dissecting the minutiae, the details that make this character’s life his life,” McGregor says. “And then at the end, you have to walk away. The last day of it is usually quite emotional. It sometimes feels like putting a life to bed, yet sometimes, you just have to get out of there.” He adds: “You can have the best time and make a really bad film, and you can have a shitty time for three months
and make a really great film. The weird thing you learn is that how you felt on set doesn’t matter.” Talk of his craft brings out the enthusiasm in this no-BS lad. McGregor, who himself relies on an instinctual approach, says, “I think ‘The Method’ is very misunderstood now. People refer to Method actors when they’re rude to the crew. A lot of actors are just really despicable to work with, and people go, ‘Oh, it’s their Method.’ What does that mean? No, they’re not Method. They’re just rude, you know?” McGregor may be in L.A. for now, but he’s loyally in touch with his past. He’s still represented by the same agent that signed him on to that miniseries so many years ago, and it seems he may always retain a bit of the dazzled neophyte, too. “I never quite got over the idea that I get to act. I spent my whole childhood dreaming of doing this, and I still have that wonder during the previews, and when the theater goes dark, and all of a sudden you come on the screen. It’s quite magical.” •

By the 1960s, California surfers had realized the potential of the Woodie Wagon: It was cheap, big enough for friends, boards and babes, and could be fixed up with the tools in a dude’s garage. Immortalized in beach anthems by Jan and Dean, and The Beach Boys, this timber-paneled cruiser became the ultimate shoreside ride.
