he California Dream…everyone has one, but not everyone gets to live it. Most people just sit back imagining this golden paradise. What would a perpetually 72-and-sunny life be like? They picture themselves driving down Sunset Boulevard in some insane car with the top down…a nice reverie for most as they sit in their cold offices, far, far away from the reality of life here. With the ocean as a backyard, would they really learn to surf? In this Spring issue of C for Men,

we present the California Dream, full-on. What could be better than dreaming it? Living it! First off, there is our cover subject, Jon Hamm, an actor showing his dimensions, from his

starring role in the groundbreaking “Mad Men” series to his comedic turn in Bridesmaids and recurring visits on “Saturday Night Live.” A world away from his Missouri roots, Hamm has fulfilled his dreams. There could be no more fitting place to shoot him than at the most iconic of Hollywood locales, the Chateau Marmont—a place where dreams come true by the pool, at legendary parties in the Penthouse and on the patio. It was also the ideal backdrop for this season’s sophisticated styles—yet, they’re clothes that are still wearable and relatable. What isn’t relatable is being a rock star (for most of us, anyway). The concept of performing on stage for thousands of people, night after night, is a bit foreign. But for some, that is the dream. In our scrapbook-style portfolio, “Rock Steady” (p.104), we flash back to amazing Golden State moments for a medley of our most fabled bands and singers. The pictures preserve an era, a time long gone and well before the manicured music machine took over. These are talents that shined brightly (with some who, sadly, burned out too early). The ultimate dream for many is a perfect California road trip. Be it from inside a classic Bentley, a fast Maserati or a vintage Ferrari, it doesn’t get much better than hitting the open road. In “Motorcycle Diary” (p.94), we take you up the coast. Starting in Venice Beach, a crew of 25 winds through Santa Barbara, into Big Sur…thru San Fran, then ends in Napa Valley. Can you think of a journey more freeing or more fun? Take the trip with our Harley gang of renaissance men, and enjoy the ride! In fact, that should be the whole point of life out west…Yes, it is a dream. And it includes taking advantage of all the aspects that make this landscape so special: the air, the sun, the ocean, the vistas along the way…and the road, with all of its bumps, that makes for one

In 1821, at a horse race in Paris, Nicolas Rieussec successfully tested his revolutionary invention that allowed time to be recorded to an accuracy of a fifth of a second. The chronograph was born. A tribute to a visionary man, the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Automatic is centred on the essence of his invention, the rotating disc technique. n a recently televised Nike shredding ad, Hanni El Khatib belts out, “You don’t think like I think, you don’t fly like I fly…I got a thing.” That thing is a soulful new sound—think The Black Keys meets doo-wop—fed by his childhood in 1980s San Francisco, where he was an avid skateboarder. The half-Palestinian, half-Filipino singer/songwriter moved to Hancock Park almost two years ago and released his debut, Will The Guns Come Out, last fall. The album includes a handful of covers, including a rock rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “You Rascal You.” This month, the 30-year-old kicks off a North American tour April 6 at The Satellite in Silverlake and finishes May 12 at the Constellation Room in Santa Ana. hannielkhatib.com.

An extreme sports wunderkind has a slew of new tricks BY ALISON CLARE STEINGOLD

A

t the modest home near Chateau Marmont where Olympian Shaun White resides, there will never be enough mantles for even a “bestof” his awards in both snowboarding and skate: two Olympic golds (2006, 2010), five-peat gold in the X Games, summer and winter Dew Cups and five Espys. After all, the 25-year-old has been sponsored by Burton since age seven, the same age when he was discovered at the skate park by Tony Hawk (pro in both sports by 16). He has had plenty of years to rack up the trophies. Since scoring a historic perfect 100 on his “victory” lap in the SuperPipe at February’s X Games in Aspen, the Carlsbad native has relished time spent in L.A. off the slopes. A portable ramp White purchased last year should prove invaluable as he segues to skateboarding season and preps for the upcoming X Games Los Angeles at the Staples Center/ Nokia Live this June 28. “I have to learn something brand-new in a short period to beat what they’ve [his competitors] been working on all winter,” he says. Back in Hollywood, he also makes space for side interests, like cutting his acting teeth in last summer’s Justin Timberlake/Woody Harrelson/ Mila Kunis flick Friends with Benefits, and posing for a dapper campaign with high-style British retailer Mr. Porter. (The sartorial hook is not surprising; he sat front-row at men’s fashion week in Milan, and he’s been designing gear for five years now.) This spring, as he continues to work with his brother Jesse on new projects, we’ll see his latest in Burton outerwear; housewares for Target; just-launched Shaun White Supply Co. hard goods; and his goggles and Holbrook glasses for SoCal-based Oakley. Bloomberg Businessweek’s second “most powerful athlete of 2011”—White is only behind quarterback Peyton Manning—can also lay claim to his own flavor of Stride chewing gum, Whitemint: “We literally sat in a room, and tested, like, 10 different flavors, writing down our thoughts about the gum. I’m super involved in everything I do.” That’s a different skillset from his famed Double McTwist 1260 trick, but no matter what he chooses to do, you can be sure White’s not going anywhere but up. •

Call of duty In the 30 months it takes to train a Navy SEAL, California might as well be hell on Earth by kelsey mckinnon

I

n 1962, President John F. Kennedy authorized the creation of the Navy SEALs, an elite fighting force to conduct unconventional warfare on any terrain (the name is an acronym for Sea, Air and Land). Since then, the 2,500 active-duty SEALs have been highly effective weapons in the war on terror with the recent takedowns of Abu Ghadiyah in 2008, Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in 2009, the Somali pirates and, of course, Osama Bin Laden last year. Men looking to become SEALs are put through the most grueling military training on Earth. The centerpiece of the punishing BUD (Basic Underwater Demolition)/SEAL program that takes place in Coronado is “Hell Week,” where students endure 132 continuous hours of night swims without wetsuits, workouts with 300-pound logs, and long-distance soft-sand runs carrying a 150-pound IBS (an inflatable boat-small)—all on fewer than four hours of total sleep for the week. About 75% of them (many are college athletes) will wash out, while the surviving candidates go on to parachuting and SEAL Qualification Training (think nighttime over-water jumps, underwater combat and recon). After this nearly year-long ordeal, roughly 250 graduates out of an initial 1,500 are awarded the trident insignia and officially join the ranks. During the following year-plus prior to deployment, in addition to linguistics (often Arabic or Farsi), the newly minted SEALs can expect to spend weeks in the Coalinga brush, stalking, sniping and carrying out mock assaults on IED (Improvised Explosive Device) factories. Off the coast of Kodiak, Alaska, they learn cold weather survival by submerging themselves in the frigid waters and then conducting re-warming drills. AC (full names are classified), a SEAL who recently returned from his fourth tour in the Middle East says, “It’s definitely not a get-sexyfor-the-beach workout. This program is designed to push a man to his breaking point and beyond.” sealswcc.com. •

Designed in collaboration with British magazine publisher Jefferson Hack, the Tod’s offerings include patent leather slippers and suede lace-ups in a palette borrowed from abstract artist Josef Albers. Homme at Last

FROM LEFT Kris Van Assche. The store carries everything from high-tops to suiting.

nter the new Dior Homme space: 2,200 square feet punctuated by lacquered shelving in blue and gray, and pierced by a staircase of glass and steel leading from the meticulous array of footwear and sports attire on the ground floor to suiting and formal items on the second. The masculine paradise is the 65-year-old luxury brand’s third freestanding outpost dedicated to Artistic Director Kris Van Assche’s distinctive sportswear, sneakers, accessories and tailoring. “San Francisco is the perfect location for Dior Homme,” says Pamela Baxter, president and CEO of Christian Dior, Inc. and president and CEO of LVMH Perfumes and Cosmetics North America. “It’s a city at the forefront of the global technology sector, host to a modern, fashion-forward man.” Inside, techie and luddite themes play hand in hand. A video screen loops runway shows and montages. Against that choppy movement, Hannah Stouffer’s wintry mural has a blanketing effect; abutting a panel of mirrors, a white hawk and ghostly counterpart sit suspended among a necklace of shadowy pine trees—a fitting reference for Northern California’s oft-mountainous terrain. “My father was a nature cinematographer, and I grew up in the woods,” says the Aspen-born artist of her inspiration for the landscape, made with gouache, oil-based pens, latex and spray paint, and silver leafing. “I think in art there is such an attraction to people who draw and paint a natural setting—people love animals. It’s exciting and lustful.” Just like Dior Homme. 216 Stockton St., S.F., 415-391-1363; dior.com. •

t’s no coincidence the country that gives us Brioni tuxedos, Cappellini chairs, Beretta shotguns, and plays host to the entire art world at the Venice Biennale, is one and the same. Italians know design. More to the point, they know beauty. (Lest we forget, Italy also gave us Sophia Loren and Monica Bellucci.) At the Petersen Automotive Museum’s new exhibition, “Sculpture in Motion: Masterpieces of Italian Design,” on display until February, 2013, the focus is on Lo Stivale’s contributions to the realm of cars. And you might want to wear a bib because there will be plenty of drool. Leslie Kendall, the man responsible for assembling the Italian exports and curator at L.A.’s Petersen—the nation’s premier automotive museum as well as one of the largest in the world—agrees that the key word here is beauty. He stresses, “These cars are all prettier than they almost needed to be. But every body is absolutely right, absolutely correct for the chassis.” Take Bruce Meyer’s 1956 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, designed by legendary coachbuilder Scaglietti: “It’s the ultimate example of sports racing coachwork with an incredibly sexy body. You just can’t look bad in that car,” Kendall says. The Testa Rossa went on to become one of race cars with the most chequered flags in an already winning history of Ferrari. It also happens to come with a significant price tag—a 1957 Testa Rossa went under a Pebble Beach gavel last August for $16.4 million, the highest price ever for a car at auction. Other standouts are the low-slung wedge of a supercar the 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero by Bertone and the impossibly elegant and curvaceous 1947 Cisitalia 202 Coupe by Pininfarina, which, in 1951, became the first automobile ever included in the New York Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. (It’s also the car Kendall would most like in his garage at home: “It’s the definitive postwar vehicle; it has had more influence on car design than any other car, ever.”) Don’t forget to stop and admire the Cadillac Ghia and Pininfarina Ford, or marvel at the days of yesteryear when Detroit makers: 1. put a premium on design and 2. looked elsewhere when they knew they themselves couldn’t deliver it. Next stop, Italia. petersen.org. •

he duo behind nightlife consulting firm Proprietors LLC can’t really complain. For these downtown denizens (hey New Yorkers, that’s Death & Co. owner David Kaplan and business partner Alex Day), getting to Chapter & Verse, their new L.A. Arts District HQ/drink laboratory, involves “a grueling three-minute commute,” laughs Kaplan. This move means more time to play with beverages, innovate cocktails, design menus for restaurants (Stella Rossa in Santa Monica and all Rosa Mexicanas) and forge ahead with overhauls, whether in Mumbai or down the block (Bar & Kitchen, where they lovingly spent “an ungodly amount of time to give it an identity,” says Kaplan). While you can’t visit C&V like Demi Monde, their coffee bar-by-day/cocktail bar-by-night project in New York, opening this spring, the guys promise local developments. Adds Day, “There’s a unique energy to the resurgence of the Arts District. It’s cool to be a part of that.” proprietorsllc.com. >>

OFF THE CLOCK CAFFEINATION Kaplan: Handsome Coffee is being served at Coffeebar (600 S. Spring St., coffeebarla.com). There’s now a whole row right around Seventh Street. COMFORT FOODS Kaplan: New York doesn’t hold a candle to L.A. for sushi, and my indulgence is Sushi Gen Restaurant (422 E. 2nd St., sushigenla.com) in Little Tokyo. There’s a line out the door for a screaming-crazy sashimi deal. However, sitting at the bar at Komasa (351 E. 2nd St., 213-680-1792) or Hama (347 E. 2nd St., 213-680-3454) is bespoke and ridiculous. Day: For Vietnamese noodles, Blossom (426 S. Main St., blossomrestaurant.com) is more comforting than my mom’s meatloaf. LUNCHTIME Day: Our office is across the street from Würstkuche (800 E. 3rd St., wurstkuche.com). I order bratwurst, though there’s that human curiosity about exotics like alligator or rattlesnake. We also have the great luxury to go for lunch at Bar & Kitchen (819 S. Flower St., barandkitchenla.com), where we work with the staff. And, you’ll never meet a restaurateur who curses more or uses more social media than Nguyen at Starry Kitchen (350 S. Grand Ave., starrykitchen.com)—like a little secret you get to know about. GROCERY RUNS Kaplan: Grand Central Market (317 S. Broadway, grandcentralsquare.com) is just fun, and so cool. COCKTAILING Kaplan: The Varnish and Cole’s (118 E. 6th St., 213nightlife.com) are both staples. I live right next to and love Church & State (1850 Industrial St., churchandstatebistro.com), a phenomenal wine and date night place. Right around the corner is Tony’s Saloon (2017 E. 7th St., 213nightlife.com)—everything a dive bar should be. ONLY IN L.A. Kaplan: An experience you can’t get anywhere else is Honey Pig (3400 W. 8th St., 213-380-0256) in Koreatown. It’s interactive and communal, plus, you eat like a king. •

We get prime ribeye and porterhouse, and we’re all better cooks. I bring some big-time wines to share. Someone is in charge of a nice bottle of scotch, some cigars, and the game gets going.” Jealous? ith the look and feel of a Bond vehicle, and the sensibilities of an iPhone, the Icon A5 is being billed as the Apple computer of personal aviation— an amphibious wonder poised to revolutionize flying by making it user-friendly. A collaboration between F-16 pilot Kirk Hawkins and Freebord developer Steen Strand, working in conjunction with designers from BMW, Porsche and Rolls-Royce, the aircraft features a 100hp motor, a futuristic two-passenger cockpit and

wings that fold out, toy-like, at the touch of a button. Thanks to a change in FAA light sport regulations in 2004, aspiring pilots need only 20 hours of instruction for certification (a third of the 700 orders already received have come from thrill-seekers who don’t yet have their Sport Pilot Licenses). The Los Angelesbased company is set to start production on orders by end of year, with delivery early 2013. Fasten your seatbelts. From $139,000; iconaircraft.com. >>

XCor’s starship enterprise: The Lynx.

A Trekkie’s version of Silicon Valley, Mojave Desert is home to Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic testing and manufacturing facilities. VG’s much-heralded SpaceShip Two makes its maiden powered flight into space this year, with commercial trips due to commence from its New Mexico-based Spaceport America in 2013. More than 500 would-be astronauts have already signed up for the two-hour roundtrip experience, during which the jet-powered launch aircraft White Knight Two propels the SS2 to 50,000 feet, then releases the rocket ship for a spine-tingling Mach 4 ride—cue weightlessness—before returning to Earth. $200,000; virgingalactic. com. • Housed in a 10,375-square-foot hangar on Mojave Air & Space Port, XCor Aerospace is developing its own futuristic liner. The Lynx prototype is slated for test flights by end of 2012. While it won’t quite take passengers to infinity and beyond, it will transport them 200,000 feet high to the upper atmosphere. In 2014, The Lynx Mark II will venture to an altitude of 350,000 feet—aka the edge of space. xcor.com.

Palo Alto–based electric car manufacturer Tesla has already taken 8,000 reservations for its new Model S, a luxury four-door sedan that clocks 4.5-second 0-60, travels up to 300 miles on its lithium-ion battery and features a 17-inch flatscreen navigation console. Sold out through early 2013, the model will begin delivery later this year. teslamotors.com. • Fisker is readying an updated version of this year’s “it” eco-car Karma from its headquarters in Anaheim. Dubbed the Surf, the five-door sportswagon is set for late 2013 production and conceptually modeled after the Ferrari FF. It’s installed with the brand’s advanced electric drivetrain with range extender, enabling travel up to 50 miles on a pure electric charge, and another 250 miles using the gasoline engine. fiskerautomotive.com. • If eco-friendly rides don’t prove sufficiently thrilling, Skip Barber in Salinas should get your heart racing. Driving enthusiasts can slide behind the wheel of a Lexus IS-F or Porsche 911 and test-drive the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track’s famous Corkscrew (a turn which drops an equivalent of 5.5 stories). Not high velocity enough? Sign up for the school’s Formula racing program, which has launched the careers of Marco Andretti, Scott Speed, Jeff Gordon and more. skipbarber.com.

This spring, some Angelenos are preparing to travel outside the confines of their cars. The $930 million Phase 1 of the city’s Expo Line will connect downtown Los Angeles to Culver City—an 8.6-mile stretch comprising 12 stations (10 of which are new). When the 15.2-mile project is completed in 2015, it will encompass 19 stations, offering a 46-minute trip between downtown L.A. and Santa Monica at the height of rush hour. $1.50 base fare; buildexpo.org. • Operating at speeds of up to 220mph, the California High-Speed Rail project may sound like the thing of dreams, in a Eurostarfor-California kind of way, but the 130-mile segment connecting North Fresno to North Bakersfield is expected to commence construction before the end of the year. If all goes to plan, come 2017, you can take breakfast at Cecconi’s and lunch at Zuni Café without having to stow your portable electronics for landing. cahighspeedrail.ca.gov. •

hen Jon Hamm sits down for our interview in the lobby of Chateau Marmont, I tell him I’ve seen him walking his dog on my street in Los Feliz. “Oh, really?” he asks. “Do you have a dog?” Yes. “Have our dogs met?” They haven’t (my terrier likes humans but not other canines). Turns out he and his longtime girlfriend, actress and director Jennifer Westfeldt, live just a couple of blocks away from me, and, for a minute, our neighborly chit-chat makes it seem like I’m just talking to Jonfrom-around-the-corner...a regular guy who wears white track pants and baseball hats and responsibly picks up after his rescue mutt, Cora. (Google it.) Except Jon is Jon Hamm the actor: the clueless Dr. Drew Baird on “30 Rock,” “crazy, sexy sax guy” Sergio on “Saturday Night Live,” the voice you hear in Mercedes-Benz television and radio spots—and, of course, Don Draper of “Mad Men.” In fact, his fifth season as the complicated 1960s ad man (he won a Golden Globe for the role in 2008) began airing last month. The series has taken Hamm, 41, from relative obscurity (Remember him on “Gilmore Girls”? Didn’t think so) and made him a huge star. But this didn’t happen without some brilliant maneuvering on his part. “When I got ‘Mad Men,’ I was immediately sent a million other scripts just like it,” Hamm says. “It’s kind of what Hollywood wants to do: ‘Oh, you can do that well, so let’s keep you doing it.’” He didn’t play their game; instead, he sought out characters who couldn’t be further from Draper (lately, that includes a recurring role on David Cross’ IFC show “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret”). “The last thing I want to do when the show is over is do the exact same thing. You’re that guy who wears a suit on that show. And you’re also wearing a suit in this thing.” Really, there are two Jon Hamms: the supremely talented dramatic actor and the charming goof who isn’t afraid of looking ridiculous for the sake of great comedy (see Sergio’s long hair, suspendered bare chest and skintight jeans). Try and think of another modern-day actor who can move between two personae so seamlessly with audiences loving him for both. In 1995, Hamm left his hometown of St. Louis, where he’d been teaching eighth-grade drama, for L.A., first living with his aunt in Westwood, then as the tenant of an old soap-opera actress in Silverlake. He waited tables at the now-closed 72 Market Street in Venice while auditioning. He appeared on NBC’s “Providence” and David Mamet-created show “The Unit,” and in Westfeldt’s 2001 film Kissing Jessica Stein before landing AMC’s “Mad Men” continued on page 110

lusive venture capitalist Vivi Nevo often crops up at all the billionaire hotspots: Shanghai, St. Barths, Sun Valley. But the Romanian-born businessman’s Malibu abode perhaps provides ultimate respite for the famously private media investor (he has stakes in companies ranging from old-school Viacom and Time Warner to newcomers such as Twitter and Square). Ideally situated on eight acres of cliff above Paradise Cove, Nevo’s low-key manse (which he purchased in May, 2009) is filled with elegant, minimalist furnishings. He has also augmented the domicile with a formidable art collection highlighting California artists Barry McGee, Retna and sculptor Aaron Young. Additionally, Nevo selected Modernist whiz Brad Dunning for the design; his projects include Demi Moore’s “tree-house” and a residence for Steven Meisel. The kitchen, terrace, den, two bedrooms, multipurpose room and gallery space read like an encyclopedia of killer current pieces and vintage statements. Inside the entryway, a spidery wire chair from contemporary British lighting and furniture company Tom Dixon offsets a black-and-white painting by L.A. graffiti artist Retna. A Jean Prouvé coffee table in the master bedroom adds an industrial punch of weight to the airy arrangement of white couches, soft cowhide rug and floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, an array of streamlined deck furniture by German-Filipino makers Dedon provide chill places to sit after a dip in the infinity pool. Beautiful as they are, none of these pieces forgets its function. Down a staircase to the ocean, you’ll find Nevo’s beach cabana, and makeshift surf board storage built by his friends. I

hatched the plan at Gjelina Take Away with my musician friend Butch (of southern-tinged rock band Butch Walker & the Black Widows): a motorcycle trip up the coast along Highway 1. It is the road less traveled because it’s a windy, cliff-hanging, single-lane path. But it is, without a doubt, the most beautiful. The route would take us from Venice Beach to Napa Valley. It would then split off to Silverado Trail, Highway 29 and Sage Canyon Road. We called it The Prohibition Tour: homage to the guys who built the bridges we’d be crossing at a time when a beer or shot of whiskey or glass of wine—my family’s business—was forbidden. We recruited our tight-knit crew of 25 or so friends to ride a mixed batch of Harley-Davidson’s finest. The group included singer-songwriter Chris Pierce, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jake Sinclair, actor Jordan Masterson, Harley-Davidson project manager Jeff Wick, photographers John Rossell, Josh Kurpius and Scott Nathan, and my wife Megan on the back of my bike.

FROM TOP The group meets at Intelligentsia Coffee to caffeinate before hitting the road. A parade of Harley-Davidsons wait for the trip to begin. Butch Walker shows off his Elvis tattoo.

DAY ONE We rendezvoused at Intelligentsia on Abbot Kinney for coffee, before heading up Highway 1 around 9 a.m. We took it easy, stopping for a casual lunch and then continuing north until the sun was setting on Big Sur’s cliff-lined coast. Temperatures plummeted, and the road that hugs a 500-foot drop to the Pacific became a blackened path with no lights other than our bikes and the occasional pick-up truck cruising by. After about 45 minutes of darkness, we arrived at Big Sur Lodge to a warm fireplace and a few bottles of 2008 Continuum Estate, grass-fed beef steaks and mashed potatoes. That day set the mood: This trip was going to be all-time, rain or shine. And by rain, as we would find out soon enough, I mean small pieces of cold, face-piercing lead. DAY TWO We knew we needed to get on the road to Napa early, as severe weather was in the forecast. Heading into a storm on bikes is a different beast than in a car. Ten minutes into our ride,

we refueled and hit-up greasy hole-in-the-wall Ripplewood Cafe for breakfast burritos. As we ate, the clouds darkened. Check please! This was as close to the wild west as we would get, driving in borderline-hurricane conditions with three-dollar plastic rain suits purchased at the Chevron station that ripped off once the wind-speed picked up. Staying on our bikes meant leaning to the right. It was unreal. Despite the weather, we let Scott Nathan talk us into Monterey Peninsula’s famous 17-Mile Drive—that scenic detour through Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach that passes by the iconic Lone Cypress tree perched along the rugged road. We decided to stop and grab a hot coffee at The Lodge at Pebble Beach before tackling 180 miles in sideways rain and S.F.’s rush-hour. I don’t think the hotel knew what to do when a group of 25 messy bikers dressed in black strolled in to order lattes. Somehow, we made it to my father [Tim Mondavi]’s place in Stag’s Leap, Napa Valley, where my brother Dante and my buddies Pete Stearns and Geoff Okarma had been prepping an epic barbecue—tri-tip, mussels, corn on the cob and seasonal veggies. DAY THREE We took our time getting up, then went to Thomas

Keller’s Bouchon Bakery for coffee. Up ahead was a drive through the vineyards to my family’s neighboring Pritchard Hill property to taste wines at Ovid and Continuum. continued on page 110

rivolity be damned; men’s style is nothing if not functional—the diving watch, the driving shoe— and, to add eye-catching flair to the canon of forms requires talent and a knack for detailing. In varying degrees, California plays off these templates. Since Casual Friday here could well be Casual Everyday, smart, upscale basics are the name of the game. (The idea for Santa Monica-based Riviera Club was even born on the links.) Lightknit sweaters or breezy scarves by Spindle & Canister are equally Stanfordworthy and surf-savvy—and woven right here in SoCal. In fact, downtown L.A.’s manufacturing capabilities are second-to-none, notes Apolis Global’s Shea Parton, whose Common Gallery retail concept recently opened amid the hip grit of the Arts District: “In terms of small-run production, it’s a very good place to be versus New York for the garment world.” As distinguished new names in apparel, the six designers profiled here all, in their first few years, offer creations that fit well and are built to last. “Would I wear it for a week straight? That’s the litmus test,” says

Three former lacrosse players who couldn’t find a good oxford, MICHAEL MAHER, MIKE ARMENTA and BARRETT PURDUM settled in S.F. and now run a custom-fitted shirting company in the Mission, where they live by three words: “handmade in California.”

MICROCOSMS OF CULTURE Says Maher, “In S.F., you walk into everyone: guys who got busted selling acid in the ’70s and investment bankers. They all work their way into the brand.”

THE FRAT PACK Spring’s ode to “the golden age of Palm Desert” sees Riviera Club translate Sinatra swing with happy-hourready relaxed prints, easy blazers and knockaround chinos.

DERBY DAYS Belts and a women’s line arrive this season. The guys will also head to the Kentucky Derby in May for a three-week pop-up filled with seersucker ties, shirts and Panama hats. Says Maher: “We make an S.F. sort of f-you to the proper southern gentleman.”

TAYO ABIDOYE never thought his Pepperdine degree would evolve into a deluxe menswear operation: “I originally said, ‘This wasn’t for me,’” he laughs. The 31-year-old Santa Monican hails from Ikeja, Nigeria— a city he likens to New York (“tons of people and filled with so much life”).

Derek Galkin and Steven Tiller revived an obscure shoe from the 1960s and added sandals, sneakers, boots and slip-ons influenced by key dates, whether referencing the tenderfoot wanderers working the October, 1966 harvest in Napa Valley; or the SoCal members of the Baja Surf Club, who, in September, 1966, purchased Mexican huaraches to avoid stepping on sea urchins. (09/66 is a low-profile take on the handmade staple.) For them, the process distills heritage—“like looking at old photography. You see the white tee and chinos rolled up and the high and tight haircut and it still looks modern today,” says Tiller. The nostalgic interpretations aren’t identical, but each of the following labels has its own man of style. Don’t call him trendy, though. “At the base, we’re not a fashion company,” says Michael Maher of Taylor Stitch in S.F.’s Mission District. “We never want to show up at fashion week. It’s about the idea of design. It’s clothing.” •

KNIT-PICKY “If you’re going to provide luxury, you might as well give them the best,” says Abidoye, who uses Loro Piana yarns and makes everything in L.A. The all-seasons blazers, cardigans and accessories appear tailor-fitted and forego excessive details. “Those distract from the real truth of the piece.”

DEREK GALKIN and STEVEN TILLER were branding pros who built on their Sperry Top-Siders success with a cool new launch. “We didn’t want to just make up a name. We wanted heritage that could be unearthed and not victim to trend,” explains Galkin. The pair found it in SeaVees, an obscure 1960s sneaker owned by B.F. Goodrich tires. The line is now carried everywhere from Barneys New York to select J. Crew stores.

S.F.-based MIKE NATENSHON (right) roped in best friend of 22 years ADAM LYNCH, and the 33-year-old finance guys from Massachusetts tackled, as Lynch says, “Clothing made in CA and designed to be worn from 5 p.m. on Friday to Sunday afternoon— or, if you’re like us, you can wear it seven days a week.”

HOME TURF “Our stores reflect NorCal sensibility: We use what some people call retro colorways and looks that have been around for 30 years.”

RESPECTFUL REHABILITATION “Make design more relevant than it was back in the day. It’s how Brian Wilson’s influence in the 1960s has more reach now than it did then.”

FROM THE ARCHIVES Zero in on the cultural history of a date: SeaVees honored the 50th anniversary of the September, 1961 Peace Corps Act with an installation at Fred Segal. The shop-in-shop features a special release (salt-washed canvas 09/61 Volunteer Plimsoll).

SOUP TO NUTS “We source the thread in L.A. and knit all our own fabric—a custom blend of Supima cotton and micro modal. It’s a broken-in T-shirt from the very first day.” Opening boutiques in the Marina and this spring in Hayes Valley, says Lynch, “cements our relationship here.” A new batch of styles sold at Levi’s—shipped to all 48 of their retail stores—arrives in May.

ROBERT PLANT

THE CONTINENTAL HYATT HOUSE, LOS ANGELES, 1975

Led Zeppelin was behind some of the most legendary rock-star-in-hotel lore—much of which took place at West Hollywood's “Riot Hyatt” (now the Andaz)—from John Bonham’s motorbike joyride through the corridors to Robert Plant’s “I’m a golden God” moment (loosely translated to celluloid for Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, 2000). The latter was captured by photographer Peter Simon: “He noticed a huge billboard advertising the release of Physical Graffiti,” says Simon. “Probably a bit amazed and humbled by this massive structure and the acclaim that was finally coming their way in the USA, he very spontaneously spread out his arms.”

GUNS N’ ROSES CANTER'S DELI, LOS ANGELES, 1985

Outside L.A.'s late-night hangout, Jack Lue shot GNR's first photo session, which became art for the Live ?!@ Like A Suicide EP. It was following a series dubbed the Hell Tour: “They had car issues, no food, were borrowing instruments—any problem you can imagine,” says Lue. Later, at the peak of its powers, the hairband stayed loyal to its roots, performing at Sunset Strip hotspot The Cathouse (to an audience including David Bowie) even after anthems like “Sweet Child of Mine” had turned them into stadium-filling megastars.

rom San Francisco’s psychedelic Summer of Love to Silverlake’s indie renaissance, music’s affair with the Golden State is an enduring one. In tribute, we’ve compiled a photo portfolio of legends captured living their California dreams, sourced with Rock Paper Photo, an online gallery co-founded by Live Nation and industry vet Guy Oseary. “People come here to be discovered, to be seen, to be heard and to be creative,” says Oseary. When asked to pick a favorite from the unforgettable images contained herein, the longtime manager for Madonna and former label head for Maverick Records didn’t hesitate: “Robert Plant, by Peter Simon. The photo to me says: ‘I’m here, and I've made it.’ What a beautiful moment in time.” •

dURaN DURAN SUNSET BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES, 1981

Fresh off the release of now-iconic single “Girls on Film,” Birmingham, U.K.’s favorite New Romantics hit Los Angeles for a debut showcase at The Roxy. Photographer Brad Elterman chauffeured the coiffed crew who, at the time, were most famous in Japan. “They didn’t know where anything was—except for their hotel,” says Elterman. The hospitality evidently struck a chord: Guitarist Andy Taylor would go on to marry hairdresser Tracey Wilson at the Chateau Marmont, and John Taylor would move to L.A. with then-wife and aspiring actress Amanda de Cadenet.

GRATEFUL DEAD HAIGHT-ASHBURY, SAN FRANCISCO, 1967

Arguably the most famous architectural landmark in San Francisco next to the Golden Gate Bridge, the Grateful Dead’s residence at 710 Ashbury was only inhabited by the band from 1966 to 1968. When Baron Wolman photographed the godfathers of jam at the Victorian commune—rifles, paisley, hippie sunglasses and all—it was in the wake of the Summer of Love and upon the group's release from jail. “This photo was taken following a press conference they gave in the living room after being busted for pot,” says Wolman, who was on assignment for Rolling Stone. “I tried to get them to formally pose on the steps of their house—they were so wired that this is the picture that emerged. I have no idea why they were carrying weapons; it was part of the mystique, I guess.”

MICHAEL JACKSON BEVERLY HILLS, 1973

Motown impresario Berry Gordy moved the Jackson family from Gary, Indiana to Los Angeles when he signed The Jackson 5 in the late ’60s. Photographer Jim Britt snapped the burgeoning teen idol at a pivotal time, when he was on the cusp of launching his solo career with Got To Be There. In the leafy environs of a Beverly Hills park, the self-styled Jackson struck a pose—a modest preview of the jawdropping, moonwalking choreography that was to come.

THE CLASH IRV'S BURGERS, WEST HOLLYWOOD, 1982

Where do you take “the only band that matters” when it comes to town? If you’re Bonnie Schiffman, you shepherd the British punk pioneers—two years on from London Calling—to neighborhood mainstay Irv’s Burgers. “Mick Jones noticed that he was standing under the Irv’s sign that said 'Hot Homemade Meatloaf' and wanted to change places because he was a vegetarian,” says the lenswoman. “I’m in the street, ready to shoot—the drivers on Santa Monica Boulevard were not thrilled. We all loudly reassured him that the shot would be great and to stop acting like a fussy baby.”

JOAN JETT HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES, 1977

THE DOORS SUNSET SOUND STUDIOS, LOS ANGELES, 1967

You couldn’t dream up a more Angeleno beginning than that of The Doors: UCLA film-school alums Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met by chance on Venice Beach in 1965, establishing a kinship on the spot after exchanging compositional notes. The Doors honed its psych-rock chops at L.A. club London Fog before graduating to resident band at Whisky à Go Go, where the group was spotted and signed by Elektra Records. Photographer James Fortune caught the band in a candid moment, taking a break from recording second album Strange Days.

Before she loved rock n’ roll (and hated herself for loving you), Joan Jett and her band The Runaways were fixtures on L.A.’s punk scene. When Brad Elterman shot Jett outside the old Pussycat Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, it was at a time when the all-girl group was nearing legendary status in Japan and gaining notoriety in the U.S., headlining shows with opening acts including Cheap Trick and Van Halen. “Even though we were friends, I was still in awe of her,” Elterman says of his Suzi Quatro-styled subject, who spent her formative years in West Covina. “I photographed an endless list of rock stars, and out of all of them, she was the coolest.”

BLONDIE GOLDEN GATE PARK, SAN FRANCISCO, 1977

Groundbreaking New Wave princess Debbie Harry could have passed for a bleach-blond local were it not for her cool-as-ice downtown demeanor, freshly exported from New York’s storied CBGB. Following the release of a debut self-titled album, at a time when the band’s star was ascending, Michael Zagaris caught the group on its way back from Japan. He turned the focus on the Playboy Club bunny-turned-frontwoman. “She was the person your eye went to first,” says Zagaris. “She had almost a Marilyn Monroe-ish quality. She photographs even more beautiful than she is.”

BIG BROTHER aNd THE HOLDING COMPANY PALACE OF FINE ARTS, SAN FRANCISCO, 1968

Progenitors of San Francisco’s psychedelic sound, Big Brother and the Holding Company would become best known for inimitable lead singer, Janis Joplin, who debuted with the quartet at the historic Avalon Ballroom in 1966. “In spite of the fact that Janis had just come from the dentist and thought her novocain-filled cheek looked like a balloon—it didn’t—the band was, as usual, in a mischievous mood,” says Baron Wolman. “At the time we were all just kids wandering playfully down the rock-and-roll highway.”

THE RAMONES ALTA LOMA ROAD, WEST HOLLYWOOD, 1978

“They looked out of place, especially during the daylight,” Brad Elterman says of Queens-bred rock heroes The Ramones. “During the ’70s, punk kids would only come out at night.” When Elterman met with the band, who was staying at the Sunset Marquis, the group had recently released its highest-charting album to date, Rocket to Russia. It was years before The Ramones grew into a full-blown pop culture phenomenon—backed by Dee Dee’s rapid-fire “1,2,3,4” and myth of origin—but it was evident even then that the foursome could walk the superstar walk. “They all knew how to pose,” Elterman says. “I am sure that someone worked with them on creating those stances because they all seemed beautifully choreographed.”

SEX PISTOLS WINTERLAND, SAN FRANCISCO, 1978

London's hardest-rocking anarchists played a final show on January 14, 1978, drawing the curtain on a two-year run that left an indelible cultural mark. “The punk scene from L.A. had come up; the scene in S.F. came out—it was the first time everyone came together," says photographer Michael Zagaris. “There was sweat dripping off the walls.” In a state of erosion, the band had been grappling with infighting, a heroin-addicted Sid Vicious and a prickly frontman with the flu. Three days later, the Sex Pistols disbanded.

in 2007. He got the Mercedes gig in 2010—one not without perks, i.e. the CLS63, perfect for a guy who’s not so into Ferraris or other sportscars. “It’s hard to drive those around and not look like a total tool shed,” he laughs. (Like the Porsche-owning one he played in Bridesmaids?) “You attract a lot of attention in them, and that’s not my jam. The CLS is very fast and capable but doesn’t look that much different from a Beverly Hills mom driving to the farmers’ market.” His other car: a 1975 Toyota Land Cruiser. fans have been rewarded for decades of suffering.” Hamm hikes and plays tennis in Griffith Park, and, when he has time, which is rarely these days, tees it up. “If I golf on really nice courses with really good players, I do better,” he says. “Because you’re focused and you’re like, ‘Okay, I can’t embarrass myself.’ That analogy carries over into work. When you’re with people who are really good, you don’t want to be the person who sucks. That’s kind of been the philosophy steering my career, as weird as that sounds: to work with people who inspire or challenge me in some way.” Case in point: Hamm’s latest movie, Friends with Kids (written, directed and acted in by Westfeldt; Hamm co-produced it and

What about Albert Pujols, who also just left St. Louis and its Cardinals for Anaheim? “He obviously got a great deal. He can be DH for the rest of his career and not have to play the field.” The purist in Hamm emerges. “I don’t like the designated hitter rule. I think it’s ridiculous. But he’s a wonderful player and an incredible human being, so at a certain point, you’re like, ‘Alright, go get yours.’” Lakers vs. Clippers? “I’m glad it’s actually a rivalry now. I’m a fan of the underdog. The Lakers will always have their fans, but now the Clippers’

stars). The movie includes his Bridesmaids castmates Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig. It’s hard not to bring your A-game acting alongside two of the funniest comediennes in film. He’s equally strong alongside women in more dramatic scenarios. Favorite “Mad Men” paramour? Not whom you’d think. “Rachel Menken [Maggie Siff] was a very interesting character. Midge Daniels [played by Rosemarie DeWitt], downtown boho gal. She was a kind of cool counterpoint to Don,” says Hamm. “But the most interesting love for Don is Betty [January Jones]. I think we’ve had the most experience with that kind of incredibly fractured and yet somehow charming relationship.

Theirs is a very strange one. I don’t know if we’ve seen the last of it yet.” And we won’t see the last of “Mad Men” (Hamm directed the second episode of the new season) for two more years. The show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, has said it won’t go beyond seven. He’s also said he knows exactly how it will end. Weiner has brought up the fact that Don Draper would be in his eighties now, but setting the finale in present times is not necessarily a plot point. “I think that would be a terrible idea,” Hamm says. “Matt might chastise me, but I don’t think that was ever his intention. I don’t want it to take a leap like that, but I also want it to have a definitive end.” On that note, our talk is finished. Hamm gets up, smiles, gives me a firm handshake and a, “See you around the neighborhood.” •

That evening, we threw a concert we called “The Best F#^king Harvest Party” at Todd Humphries’ seasonal comfort-food eatery, Kitchen Door. Chris Pierce opened to a sold-out venue, then Butch Walker and Jake Sinclair played for a full hour. It was one of the finest shows Napa has seen. After several beers and many glasses of wine, we all turned in our keys and taxied home, where we drank some more wine… DAY FOUR Needless to say, the following morning was bad. Due to schedules and work commitments, we had to straightshoot 500 miles from Napa to L.A. in one day—something I’d never recommend. On a bike, it’s a two-day trip with ease and a threeday trip with leisure. Doing it in one with a hangover, at speeds of 115mph, is hellish. But at the same time, those wild moments are what make an adventure from start to finish—which is why we’ve already decided to make our ride an annual thing. At the end, my buddy Jordy put it best: The rain made us earn the sun. •

in 1956, a year before he landed the breakout role of rowdy Yates on the western series “rawhide,” Clint eastwood was managing apartments in Beverly Hills, auditioning by day and working at a gas station by night. after A Fistful of Dollars and Dirty Harry, it’s difficult to imagine eastwood as anything but a full-time ladies man who’s fast with a pistol and likes his steak “extremely rare” (Play Misty For Me, 1971). almost 70 films later, he has proven himself more than a macho icon: settled in Carmel-by-the-sea—just over the hill from where he was stationed as an army lifeguard during the Korean war— the 82-year-old star is fluent in italian, accomplished as a jazz pianist and practices transcendental meditation twice daily.
