founder’s letter
here is nothing worse than a wedding that feels like it was a “packaged” soiree. If you order Package A, you get the white doves. Package B gets you the carnations, not the roses. It’s always much more interesting to have the elements of the day reflect YOU and your love. Think about having your
grandmother’s small heart charm sewn into the lining of your wedding dress or having a monogram printed at the top of your menu. Maybe your fiancé will surprise you with a poem. The little things add up to make an impact, and it will be those details that your guests will remember for years to come. Most little girls dream up hundreds of scenarios of how exactly it will all unfold: Will it be at their family’s church or temple? Will it be at their parents’ home? On the beach? In a vineyard? With many years to ponder this single day, many women come to their actual engagement overly prepared. At times, the groom doesn’t stand a chance of getting a word in edgewise. But life can be unpredictable—messy, at times—and the best-laid plans often go awry. In fact, half the fun is the planning (or the plotting!); the other half is the unexpected ride along the way to the altar. With that in mind, we present you with our C Weddings Fall edition. Think of the issue as an inspiration guide to get you through these next important months. (If you aren’t a bride yet, good to dog-ear some pages as a primer for the party ahead.) I remember at my reception more than 14 years ago (before this trend appeared), my husband insisted on the most divine individual wedding cakes with 10 different designs so everyone at each table would receive a unique confection. Reserving a few seats on the airplane to send out the cakes by master Sylvia Weinstock in N.Y. didn’t matter. Why? It personified us as a couple, and people loved (and still talk about) this memory from our day. This excitement is what we want for you, so enjoy all sorts of distinctive options for your wedding—bold bouquets to stunning cakes, of-the-moment dresses to the latest cut in diamonds, even some fun bachelorette party ideas—we have it all in one deliciously inspired

et’s face it, Vram Minassian’s new engagement rings aren’t for the brand name, hotel ballroom, raised threeprong solitaire bride. “I insist [the setting] be as low and as tapered as possible,” says the Gray Gallery co-owner and third-generation jeweler. “If I create an engagement ring where the metal disappears and the diamond floats on the woman’s hand, then I’ve succeeded.” His 20 modern styles riff on the classics using responsibly sourced, Flawless-grade diamonds that are hand-cut
in Israel and set on-site in Minassian’s busy L.A. workshop (where you can check in on your bauble’s progress). The rest of the private fortress above Robertson Boulevard feels like an exotic Parisian atelier. ith more than two million weddings in the U.S. each year, every newly engaged couple is faced with a difficult quandary: how to make it special. A trio of S.F. industry connoisseurs—Utterly Engaged (online inspiration hub), Blu Bungalow (event planning) and Lovely Jubilee (event design and styling)—created the Fizz and Frills wedding event to make shopping for CA artisanal items (from bespoke boutonnieres to cake stands) and rare, handmade goods an entertaining endeavor. what’s hot Laws of attraction Celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser cleans up the Prenup’s bad rap
When is a PrenuPtial agreement aPProPriate? When a couple is seeking to opt out of the laws regarding marital property and/or spousal support which govern the state in which they live or are planning to live. They are not only based on income levels but can clarify an individual’s assets coming into the marriage, certain testamentary issues, gifts between spouses prior to and during the marriage, etc. It’s always case-by-case. is there any advantage to the lesser-earning Party in signing a PrenuP? Absolutely. Often, when the greater-earning party is requesting a Prenup, that party will offer something in consideration to the lesser-earning party for signing off on rights he or she would otherwise have to community property. Although they would be giving up the right to one-half of income earned by their spouseto-be during the marriage, they may receive either an annual gift or a one-time “no strings attached” payment in exchange for the waiver of community property. These gifts could actually be greater than the share of income being waived. What if your Partner asks for one? Be calm. Assumedly, this is the person with whom you would like to spend the rest of your life. Freaking out will not benefit either of you and could certainly set the stage for some miserable negotiations going forward. Generally, if your partner is asking for a Prenuptial Agreement, he or she may be responsible for paying not only the attorney who drafts the Agreement, but your attorney for looking it over and giving you advice with regard to the transaction itself. Educate yourself, find a good attorney, determine what you are giving up by virtue of signing an Agreement, if anything, and structure an Agreement that you can live with yet will hopefully never have to resort to. hoW should you go about asking for one? Be delicate but straightforward. (Wine is helpful.) What are some of the biggest mistakes PeoPle make When drafting a PrenuP? Presenting a party with a Prenuptial Agreement too close to the wedding date could actually render it void if the party later claims that he or she was under duress or signed the Agreement based on undue influence. After all, the wedding day was just around
the corner, guests had flown in from out of town, the cake was ordered and dress fitted; how could we call it all off now!? hoW does california laW stack uP? In California, Prenups are very powerful and generally enforced if drafted correctly. A couple can waive rights to property, limit spousal support and the Prenup can act as a contract or a Will. In California, parties must be represented by legal counsel if the Prenup limits spousal support. Limits on spousal support are not taken lightly by California Courts and both parties should be aware of the ramifications of limiting or waiving spousal support. The parties’ circumstances at the date of their separation are examined as opposed to, for example, New York, where the parties’ economic circumstances are based on what existed at the date this document was executed. Also in California, registered domestic partners may enter into Prenuptial Agreements. any unusual PrenuP requests that have come across your desk? I have had everything from “If he cheats on me, I get to divorce him and take all of the assets” to “If she doesn’t lose the baby weight, she waives her right to the annual gift I would otherwise be giving her.” When you are drafting a Prenup, you really want to make sure that the provisions included make sense and would stand up in court. Neither of the above examples works. isn’t it a bad omen? Some people feel a Prenuptial Agreement is negotiating your divorce prior to even getting married. I do not think that is the case. It is establishing some boundaries and clarifying what each of you expects from the other during your marriage and in the event of a dissolution. I think that is extremely important and if more couples had these candid conversations, perhaps I would be able to take more vacations. •

y
es, marriage is about love, parties, flowers, diamonds, extravagant resorts and puffy white dresses, but it’s also about the merging of assets and acknowledging new financial circumstances. It may not be sexy to talk about whether a Prenup is appropriate, but it may just be the key to keeping your union a union (or, at least, from preventing a First Wives Club situation). A partner at Century City’s Wasser, Cooperman & Carter (maybe you recognize her as the Prada-clad council to Maria Shriver, Kim Kardashian and Vanessa Bryant), Laura Wasser offers many theories on the Prenuptial Agreement’s pros and cons.

hen a magazine-worthy “wedding for two” at Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse in Santa Ynez hit blogs in 2010, the catch phrase stuck. Oh, How Charming! event planner Lisa Vorce, floral designer Mindy Rice and photographer Aaron Delesie— the talents behind its execution and documentation—gained as much attention as the newfound demand for personalized, boutique affairs. Indeed, small weddings have become something of a calling card for the longtime industry talents whose work spans faraway historic towns, secluded beaches and crumbling basilicas—think Vietnam, St. Barths, Maine, San Sebastián, Zacatecas (see p.98). Says Delesie, “People were responding to the concept and destinations.” “Our first priority is to figure out what is indigenous to the area,” explains Vorce, who scouts locales with Rice months prior to an event. “A client in Bali wants olive trees and lavender,” says Rice, “so we do the same ethereal, romantic look with local frangipani blossom, roses and traditional strung jasmine.” The same spirit holds in California; recently at the Ojai Valley Inn, Rice mixed buttery yellow tones, gardenia foliage and avocados (“stunning en masse with outdoor chandeliers,” she adds). While scoping markets and bazaars for produce, pottery, textiles (and goodies for Vorce’s masterfully curated welcome gifts), they also employ craftspeople to create anything from welded wrought-iron candelabras to backdrops, chandeliers, chargers and place cards fashioned out of the nacreous shells of Capiz. Humorously self-described third wheel Delesie shoots gorgeous film and digital with his wife/business partner, Jennifer. There’s no limit to this crew’s spontaneous invention (arrangements of conch shells and dried wheat for a Turks and Caicos bride who didn’t want anything “killed”)—and fearlessness (trudging equipment up an Aspen double-black diamond). Even so, they leave the real drama up the couples themselves. delesieblog.com; ohhowcharming.com; mindyrice.com. •

fashion for him Impeccably Groomed Mr. Porter’s “what to wear” for nuptials ranges from John Lobb to YSL. Dan May. Lanvin buttonhole flower pin, $170, mrporter.com.
Wool-and-silk tuxedo, $4,945, shirt, $595, silk bow tie, $135, and quilted shoes, $425.
Mr. Porter Style Director Dan May answers the gentleman’s essential sartorial queries If you’re slick enough and can pull-off a nice black suit with a trim black tie and a spread-collar shirt, you’ll be able to blur the lines. Try a Sandro Evident V or Ellipse jacket/pant, Charvet shirt and grenadine silk tie from Drake’s. Balenciaga makes a fantastic wool and mohair-blend suit. IS A THREE-PIECE PASSÉ? Nothing is passé in style if worn right. HOW DOES ONE APPROACH A BAREFOOT-ON-THE-BEACH AFFAIR? You should be wearing a more casual pant in cotton or linen. Tailor the pant as you would any other trouser—perhaps a half-inch less if you want to show a little ankle. Kick off your shoes, and roll the cuffs as soon as your feet hit sand. WHAT ARE THE MARKERS OF A PERFECTLY FITTING SUIT? A trim, modern silhouette. Guys are much more minded to size and fit these days. Find a designer that fits your body and the right tailor to make it your own. The J. Crew Ludlow (sold in separates) is one of our everyman wardrobe staples. If you’re trim and little, go for Band of Outsiders or Ami. If you’re big and tall, Savile Row favorites like Paul Smith and Richard James should do you justice, and be sure to go for charcoal or navy; those colors can be dressed up/down for many occasions. mrporter.com. FOR BLACK-TIE, IS A BLACK SUIT ACCEPTABLE?

Nice, France-reared Eber, who opened the space last July (and has owned salons in the area since 1980), has worked with the likes of Farrah Fawcett, Cher and longtime friend Elizabeth Taylor. For Taylor’s 1991 wedding (to Larry Fortensky), held at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, Eber—also the best man—created a romantic, tousled chignon to complement her lace Valentino gown. “It was the most spectacular [celebration] of my life and career,”

To de-stress, book the private upstairs suite, where you can get a facial, massage, manicure and pedicure, before the pros take to your locks. During cocktail hour, for example, frozen cubes of orange-flower water melt and reveal edible herbs and blossoms. Fortunato asks planners for 10 extra minutes to pour sauces tableside, and dramatic inventions such as hand-built planks transport dishes simultaneously to keep them hot. There’s also advice—like steering couples away from filet (“Braise a different cut so you sidestep rare versus well-done issues”). Why so much detail? he year was 2007 when a restless, relentless hospitality veteran went a little overboard with a carpentry project. Steve Fortunato emerged from his L.A. garage with 12 enormous tables and benches. He called Steven Clifton at Palmina Wines, teamed up with the lead line cook at Café Pinot and invited 40 guests at 35 bucks a head. “I just prayed to break even,” he chuckles. Over the next five years and 141 pop-up winemaker dinners and parties, his “restaurant without walls” has taken those tables everywhere from Santa Cruz to San Diego. There were evenings on a Laguna cliffside, at Big Daddy’s Antiques in L.A.—even Bob Hope’s Palm Springs home, where he proudly served President Clinton. “I had set out to open an upscale place in South Pasadena. But the pop-up resonated. People hired us to cater, and we kept the pop-up restaurant/winemaker model to keep us inspired and broaden our network,” he explains. “So we stumbled into wedding catering as opposed to the other way around.” Now, access to off-the-radar venues such as Huron Sub Station and 1342 ensures singular affairs. t’s rare for a chef to take Saturday night off, but for the October nuptials of Monica and Aaron Rocchino, the former Chez Panisse chef/groom, the best man Curtis Di Fede (Oenotri), Guy Frenette (Moody’s Bistro), and 150 assorted guests strayed from their respective kitchens to gather at County Line Harvest/Dolcini Farm in Petaluma. “We wanted a venue where none of our guests had worked,” laughs Monica, who spent nine years in sales and planning with Paula LeDuc Fine Catering. With every copper cooking-vessel centerpiece and artichokeembellished arrangement by Chez Panisse florist Max Gill, this autumn affair expressed all aspects of culinaria. The couple picked the produce at the site; Aaron cured meats for cocktail-hour prosciutto and mortadella. And, there could be no entrée other than the Rocchino porchetta pork loin; after all, the caterer’s signature is actually Aaron’s recipe. Married life has treated them well so far. Last year, the newlyweds opened The Local Butcher Shop in Berkeley. The best part: “We both have Saturday night free.” thelocalbutcher shop.com. •

ates can’t really be blind anymore because of Facebook,” admits Jessica Bigarel. She and Aaron Sittig, who now both work at the social networking site, were introduced in 2007 by a mutual friend via online message and “decided to take the plunge.” They met in person for the first time for dinner at Blue Plate, Halloween festivities in San Francisco’s Castro and had pancakes at 3 a.m. Three years later, while taking a month off to travel together, Sittig proposed in the Alcázar gardens in Seville, Spain. Out of the bushes popped two of their closest friends whom Sittig had asked to fly over for the surprise and film while he got down on bended knee. “He earned his first fiancé points for that one,” Bigarel says. When it came to planning their wedding, the two had one priority: making sure their friends and loved ones had the time of their lives. Deciding they’d need more than just a Saturday to really celebrate, the couple rented out the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs for the three-day extravaganza that included a “Bourbon and Bowties” welcome party—so-named for Sittig’s favorite accessory (on offer was custom neckwear by haberdasher Forage); a Thai-inspired
blessing ceremony in Joshua Tree; and poolside entertainment by the Leftover Cuties. Bucking tradition, they also hosted a sit-down dinner and dancing the evening prior to the wedding. Before the main ceremony the following day, everyone celebrated the groom during the couple’s spin on an Indian groom’s procession, or Baraat. “As the bride, I soaked up so much of the focus and attention,” Bigarel says. “It was nice to have some time where everyone honored him and only him.” Sittig arrived in a vintage Jaguar to the joyful sounds of the Palm Springs High School marching band. The vows, which Bigarel and Sittig wrote themselves, were relaxed and intimate—many guests either stood or sat on the ground. Afterward, everyone danced to the Rebirth Brass Band. “Around 8 p.m., we opened the gates to a swell of food carts,” Bigarel says, including hotdog makers Let’s Be Frank and Heirloom L.A. The night ended with a wee-hours pool party. So many perfect moments: Sittig delivering his new wife a late-night latte on the dance floor; Bigarel skipping the sentimental father-daughter song and cutting a rug with her dad; and remembering what started it all. “One of my close friends, Brit, played the video of our engagement in Spain, which I’d never seen! Everyone roared and cheered. It was touching.” •
“Our friends are going to play a critical role in our lives and our marriage. We wanted them to feel at the center of things.”

fter an unsolicited setup by a mutual friend, makeup artist Erin Skipley and actor/model Jack Sneed have been inseparable since their first date at Figaro, a cozy French bistro in L.A.’s Los Feliz neighborhood. Fast forward a year later, to their artsy enclave in Culver City, when Skipley discovered a green amethyst sparkler atop one of her homemade cupcakes. Her birthday party turned into an engagement fête, and friends drew wishes and blessings on a large canvas now hanging in the couple’s home. “We’re pretty dramatic people,” Skipley admits. “Everything is an opportunity for a photo shoot.” True to form, their recent autumnal wedding was nothing short of a fantastical meeting of creative minds. The Seattle-reared bride says, “We always joked that we wanted to do a picnic wedding—guerrilla style.” After making a few phone calls to their wedding industry friends to handle the logistics (photographer Elizabeth Messina and event designer and producer Merryl Brown among them) they found the perfect weekend to slip away. On cue was a custom built gypsy caravan, miniature donkies, acoustic string musicians and a decadent feast. Spectacular storm clouds rolled in against the backdrop from top of Santa Ynez’s Sunstone Winery. “The first musicians serenade the trip we took with Isaac [their now two-yearcouple. Isaac, the couple’s only guest, was l’enfant terrible: “He grabbed a wooden spoon and kept hitting my flowers. Finally, he just wriggled out of Jack’s arms and took off.” Following an intimate exchange of vows on the manicured winery lawn—with Isaac safely retrieved—the family of three sat down for their late afternoon “picnic” of roast duck, leek tarts and fresh currants with the sun hanging low in the sky. •

he summer after college graduation, Regina Flores and Zaheen Mir met at a party in Manhattan. When Mir, an executive director for a leading financial services firm—born in Kashmir, India, and raised in London—spilled red wine on Flores’ best friend’s (and soon-to-be maid of honor) white blouse, the pair fell into their first conversation. “There was an instant connection,” says Flores, a management consultant who grew up in the Bay Area. “Neither of us thought anything would happen since Zaheen was returning to London, where he lived and worked, the next day.” He called two months later to wish her a happy birthday, and their long-distance relationship ensued. The courtship was sealed several years later when Flores returned home from a business trip. Mir was nervously waiting at the end of a candlelit hallway on one knee, and he proposed with a Harry Winston sparkler. “It was totally, unexpectedly perfect,” says Flores.
The couple honored her heritage with a marriage celebration in her late father’s hometown of Zacatecas, Mexico. Officiated by the bride’s uncle Rev. William Kellogg, the pair exchanged vows among the ruins at Museo Rafael Coronel (a former 16th-century convent). The callejoneada, a traditional Mexican parade with mariachis, folk dancers and a tequila-carrying donkey, led the newlyweds, guests as well as many locals, through the cobblestone streets to an intimate square for cocktails. “For me, this is what Mexico is all about,” says Flores, “community, family, el barrio [the neighborhood]. There were women leaning out of their balcony windows and children playing all around.” Dinner was served in Quinta Real hotel’s historic bullfighting ring. And as the couple danced to “At Last” by Etta James, the heavens opened up with thunder, wind and a huge downpour. “My grandmother always used to say, ‘Into each life, some rain must fall.’ I once told Zaheen that, and without skipping a beat, he said, ‘Well, Regina, you can always stand under my umbrella.’” •

uture William Morris Endeavor agents notoriously begin their career in the mailroom. During Brooks Hansen’s stint, each time he delivered a letter to Alison Mork in Corporate Communications, sparks flew. “The joke was that I was the only one who said ‘thank you’ and smiled,” says Mork. Four years later, Hansen—who’d by then swapped show business for finance—proposed to the Colorado-born beauty at an ocean-view Shutters on the Beach suite teeming with candles. It took just five months for the couple to say, “I do.” A former William Morris Agency events planner (now elementary school teacher) herself, Mork intuitively knew with whom she wanted to work: the “perfectionist” and past associate Yifat Oren. Together, they settled on one of Montecito’s oldest homes and planned a soft, glowing environment with linen-covered lanterns, polished custom hardwood floors and draped tenting. Nine bridesmaids carried English garden roses, American garden roses and lavender sweet peas, and the bride beamed in a diaphanous Vera Wang gown. Out on the lawn, Mork’s childhood Presbyterian pastor officiated, and the ceremony closed with an unexpected gospel choir appearance and the bridal party dancing down the aisle. After cocktails and dishes by the Lucques Catering team, 250 guests enjoyed cake with layers of Kahlúa, “Harvey Wallbanger,” and berries and cream. “I never thought I would date a co-worker,” reminisces Mork. “But I was so smitten. We went on our first date, and I was done.” •

Just beach-cool? A singular wedding for Andora Hunt and before the fog rolled in, the couple married on the shore in her U.K. import, Charlie Whitfield. “We met with a planner, front of her sister’s home. aving met in the Paradigm mailroom a decade ago, neither Amy Gores nor Ben Weiss ever thought they would share an address one day. Gores, who now runs her own L.A.-based interiors business, returned to college. But the two stayed in touch; After emailing back and forth for a year, Gores remembers, “He finally asked me out.” Over Fourth of July weekend five years later, Weiss insisted on a Malibu beach walk and dropped down in the sand holding up an Asschercut sparkler (from Manuel Leon in Beverly Hills, not far from their home). For the main event, the couple returned to the beach for a four-day whirlwind last fall. “My uncles live next to each other in Malibu, so the girls stayed in one house and the boys in the other.” Day-of, the ladies in waiting enjoyed a chef-prepared breakfast before receiving visitors: masseuses, celeb hair stylist Andy Lecompte and makeup artist Thierry Pourtoy. David August, who created custom tuxes for Weiss and his groomsmen, paid a visit next door. The Row’s Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen—best friend of the bride— designed the hand-embroidered custom dress. “I just let her run with it. I went to her offices in N.Y. five times for fittings and fabric choices. She was so nervous, but it was amazing.” The 100-person ceremony and reception took place at the Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards, where pro-planner Mindy Weiss (no relation) brought in pepper trees to cozy up the Campanile-catered affair. A family member had a surprise for the couple at brunch the next day: Just off the coast, a plane wrote their names in the sky. anessa Parker, an architect who also works in interior design, and Ryan Meyer, a software engineer, have one of those modern tales: “We met on eHarmony and have been together ever since that first date,” says the bride. Six months later, on one of their regular evening walks, Meyer staged a “very creative” proposal overlooking Laguna Beach. “Ryan had a sketch artist draw special scenes from our relationship which he bound into a storybook he hid along the path,” recounts the Central Valley and O.C. native. “The last page of the book showed Ryan on his knee proposing to me.” The Californians (he’s from the Bay Area) wed last August at the Laguna Presbyterian Church where Meyer’s father, Pastor Jim Meyer, performed the ceremony. The design-savvy bride collaborated with her mother, Laura, on everything from the flower arrangements (which included Abraham Darby English roses from Laura’s home garden) to the programs. “I always knew I would be hands-on with the wedding planning because of my background,” says Parker, who donned a satin and organza Vera Wang dress with a Swarovski crystal-trimmed veil by Erin Cole. Amid fields of lavender and olive trees at Tuscan-style Villa Diamante, a poolside dinner resembled, she says, “an Italian picnic at sunset. The setting was out of a dream, and it made the day so special.” After a full night of dancing to an eclectic mix of Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday and Journey, the couple hopped a flight to Maui for 10 days—just enough time to look back on it all. •

he gravitational pull of Ojai Valley— a force that has long attracted artists and creative thinkers to the area—must have resonated with L.A. fashion designers Rachel Pally and Kevin Circosta. “We saw the huge old succulents and the Spanishstyle house. We were like, ‘Yes! This is it,’” says Pally. The Sherman Oaks natives met in preschool, fell in love two decades later and wed last spring at Twin Peaks Ranch. All 250 guests secretly penned blessings on ribbons that swayed from a delicate branch chuppah Pally’s father had constructed. (Circosta had his own surprise: He’d collaborated with jeweler Lorraine Schwartz on Pally’s ring.) Such sentimental details imbued the bountiful affair. Though known for their Boyfriend/Girlfriend line and her eponymous label’s dresses, the bride customized a Carolina Herrera silhouette. Pally’s brother Joseph Becker produced the invitations; grandmother and aunt arranged giant peony bouquets; and ceramicist great-uncle crafted centerpieces overflowing with pixie tangerines. The newlyweds had also encouraged friends to bring instruments. Pally remembers, “After DJ StoneRokk, we sat around the fire, had milk and cookies, and sang. Just dreamy.” • from aBove left

e met at midnight on Valentine’s Day,” says Saree Gordon of the first time she laid eyes on commercial and feature-film producer/composer Sidh Solanki at a mutual friend’s party in Venice Beach. “The following evening, we were dancing in his kitchen.” And the rest, as they say, was history. Six months after a bittersweet engagement in February of 2011 (both Gordon’s and Solanki’s grandmothers passed away a week later), the Santa Monica couple wed in the familiar splendor of the bride’s family home in Brentwood. “It felt really cozy,” recalls Gordon, an avid equestrian, of the late-summer evening. Out on the back lawn, the ceremony was officiated by both a Hindu priest and a rabbi before 220 guests who had flown in from Kenya, Dubai, Paris and London—where Solanki was born. At the welcome party, hosted by Solanki’s parents two days prior to the big day, Gordon had the tops of her feet painted with henna (a Hindu bridal ritual). “It was
important to us to incorporate both religions in everything from the [customs] to the decor.” That they did, with the help of wedding planner Yifat Oren. She filled vintage brass and amber glass vases with all-white arrangements of dahlias, phalaenopsis orchids and hydrangeas to offset rich orange, gold and cream tones of Indian linens from Full Moon Loom. Oren also set up lounge areas with embroidered batik pillows and brown ottomans for comfortable ambience. “My inspiration was the traditional marigold garland used in Hindu ceremonies,” says the L.A.-based tastemaker. Oren worked with The Velvet Garden to create snow-white versions for the garland exchange custom and Phera (a Hindu couple’s traditional walk around the fire). An al fresco dinner commenced on the tennis court— transformed with wooden flooring and framed with lush green hedges—underneath a canopy of draped white florals. At the after-party, The Kitchen for Exploring Foods served sliders and French fries as guests danced to The Cowling Band and DJ Chris Carter until 3:30 a.m. The next day, the couple left for a four-day escape to Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara, followed by a trip to Anguilla. •

hen it came to planning her October nuptials, L.A. actress Megan Ferguson (“Boardwalk Empire,” Love and Other Drugs), knew she wanted a celebration that was “like a great party in your front yard where everyone felt at home.” She already had the perfect location: her parents’ Thomasville, Georgia, estate. The groom, Nico EversSwindell (also an actor—Edge of Darkness, William & Kate), had proposed in his native New Zealand, and 10 months later the couple and their families threw a long weekend of “southerncentric” affairs at Boxhall Plantation in the Peach State. After a welcome soiree hosted by Ferguson’s grandmother at Glen Arven Country Club, activities like skeet-shooting and exploring downtown Thomasville (including the charming store Firefly, owned by Nan Myers, who designed the wedding) led up to the big day. The night before the “I dos,” there was a barbecue
in an old Coca-Cola bottling factory and a rehearsal dinner and cocktail party at Millpond, the historic Spanish Revival plantation. The ceremony was in Boxhall’s garden. “It was one of my favorite parts of the day,” says the bride. “Walking by all my friends—all the people I loved.” After, everyone headed to a tent amid Spanish moss-covered oaks for a family-style dinner cooked by “Top Chef Masters” Hugh Acheson, owner of Atlanta’s Empire State South. First on the dance floor were the groom and his friends stomping their feet in the Haka, a traditional Kiwi dance. The rest of the guests joined in (L.A.-based shoe company Soludos provided custom slip-ons) while bluegrass band The Defibulators played. “We had so much fun, we forgot to cut the cake!” Ferguson says. At the end of the night, she and EversSwindell retreated to a century-old Heartwood pine cottage, moved onto the property and renovated by her mother as a wedding gift. And when plans for a honeymoon in Tulum, Mexico, were thwarted by Hurricane Rina, the two changed course for the City of Lights. As Ferguson says, “Paris is always a good option!” •

ith its alluring, Old Hollywood grandeur and lofty seclusion, The Beverly Hills Hotel has acquired a reputation over the years as a top destination for nuptials and, yes, trysts alike. Perched atop Sunset Boulevard in a thick of fragrant gardens and lemon trees, the resort has hosted some of the world’s most illustrious weddings for such high-profile couples as Karen Carpenter and Thomas Burris, and Elizabeth Taylor and first husband Conrad Hilton Jr. (Bungalow Five was also the actress’s preferred honeymoon hideaway with each of her six other husbands.) Yoko Ono and John Lennon were also fans of the

luxe cottages; there, they reportedly stayed in bed for a week. “The interiors alone add so much sophistication and glamour,” says Director of Catering Tracy Koven, the resident weddings expert who has helped execute the visions of Neil Diamond and Katie McNeil, Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed, and Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne. The rocker couple fêted 20 years of marriage with a soiree in the historic Crystal Ballroom (the largest of the four gathering halls, holding some 500 guests). Favored for its original Art Deco style, the sprawling space features a built-in stage, dance floor, and French doors opening to the Crystal Garden and its white gazebo–ideal for an outdoor ceremony. For a smaller event, the Sunset Ballroom, accented with hand-painted murals and floor-to-ceiling windows, offers panoramic views of the city, while The Rodeo Ballroom comes equipped with its very own baby-grand piano and a Spanishtiled terrace—often selected as a spot for the cake-cutting. “Most couples want the beauty of the hotel’s decor to shine through, so you can actually get away with keeping it simple,” says Koven, noting that most still opt for fairy-tale drama: “I once had a couple leave on a horse-drawn carriage—à la Princess Diana.” 9641 Sunset Blvd., B.H., 310-276-2251; beverlyhillshotel.com. •

in Mike nichols’ seminal coming-of-age film, The graduate (1967), 21-year-old Ben Braddock (dustin Hoffman) talks to his father about marrying elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross). Mr. Braddock says, “Ben, this whole idea sounds pretty half-baked”—to which Ben replies, “Oh, it’s not. it’s completely baked. it’s a decision i’ve made.” despite his affair with elaine’s mother, Mrs. Robinson (anne Bancroft), Ben races from Berkeley to Pasadena in search of his true love. Upon learning that elaine’s wedding to another man is taking place in santa Barbara, Ben crashes the ceremony, locking guests inside the chapel by jamming a wooden crucifix in the door while he and elaine narrowly escape. free from their parents’ controlling grasps and expectations, the young lovers share a cathartic moment—to simon & garfunkel’s “The sound of silence”—as they embark on their future together. •
