founder’s letter

he moment finally arrived…he proposed! It was everything you dreamed about and more. Now, the fun—the planning process—begins. Some brides are overwhelmed and immediately run out and hire a planner. Others do it all themselves, armed with stacks of folders filled with inspiration. There

are endless ways to go when designing a wedding and so many different choices. Above all, you want the day and all of the festivities to be representative of you as a couple. Achieving this goal is no easy task.

I always enjoy a wedding where I see the couple’s personality or heritage in the elements. When I got married, my husband insisted we have a cigar and cognac bar after the cake was cut and while people were still dancing. So, we recreated “Rick’s Place” from the movie Casablanca (one of our favorites). It was as personal as it could get, and all the guests loved to lounge in the after-party space. Not to be outdone, I adore formal English gardens and wanted to incorporate them into the ballroom somehow. Our amazing wedding planner, Colin Cowie, figured out a way to bring greenery, old antique urns and flowers that appeared as if they had been picked in a garden and arranged just so. It is the little things that add up to make a big impact. We created C Weddings to help guide you down the aisle...to give you a publication full of dream-worthy parties, rings, dresses—and more. Our mission, now and always, is to present everything through a well-edited lens, all while keeping it California cool. From a sandy beach to a private family estate, the desert to wine country, the incredible real weddings we feature throughout this issue capture the essence of a Golden State union. Our terrain is the ultimate locale for everything your heart desires, the finest backdrop to showcase you

b

ack when he was a production designer for Juicy Couture, Maurice Harris found himself rearranging a ghastly flower display before an important meeting. “Next thing I knew, I was also the in-house florist,” he recalls. Having realized his life’s calling, in 2009 Harris opened the downtown Los Angeles studio Bloom and Plume not far from the flower mart. Catering to weekly boutique clients such as Jenni Kayne and Just One Eye, he also takes on a few select weddings each year. “I always meet the couple in person and see the venue first,” says Harris. He then fashions effortless bouquets and headpieces, incorporating cleverly placed feathers, pyrite, precious stones and tassels whenever possible. Consider it a private commission; the Otis College of Art and Design graduate says, “It’s an ephemeral medium, but the memory will last forever.” bloomandplume.com. •

hen Ruth Saperstein’s high school friend offered to set her up with Hastings law student Ian Samson in 2009, Saperstein did what any twentysomething girl does: Facebook reconnaissance. The night before the two were due to meet, Saperstein recognized her future date at S.F.’s North Beach bar Savoy Tivoli; they struck up a conversation and “within months, we’d said we loved each other,” she gushes. Less than two years later, Saperstein was in the throes of planning their June nuptials at Napa Valley’s Z Modern Estate. “Because of my job, I think in palettes,” says the merchandiser for Bay Area-based Gap. She began with an inspiration board of images culled from designers including John Robshaw, Jonathan Adler and Kelly Wearstler, then worked with events planner Laurie Arons to select bright, summery color themes for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception—staged in a marquee equipped with a DJ lounge and a dandelion chandelier as its focal point. Inspired by a Louis Vuitton window installation, guests were directed to tables courtesy of a custom Lucite sculpture pinned with “cupid’s heart arrows” by PS Paper. An ikat pattern from Kathleen Deery Design became an unofficial motif: “That table runner is the same print I have on our bed; it reminded me of our house,” says Saperstein. “Ultimately, we wanted our wedding to feel like we were welcoming people into our home.” • cLocKwise from righT The classic Party rentals tent featured a custom yellow and white valance. Happily Ever After As they celebrate their third anniversary, Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers share what it really means to be husband and wife

“All of the love, work and time is an investment that will pay off for decades to come.”

JUST MARRIED: JOHN RUSSO. STORE: ELIZABETH CHAMBERS. CUPCAKE: GUILLERMO LUNA

A

lot has happened in the three years since Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers tied the knot in Beverly Hills: Hammer starred in J. Edgar and recently wrapped The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp, and while Chambers opened Bird Bakery in San Antonio, Texas, she continues to report for the Human Rights Foundation, E! and Access Hollywood. Here, the high-profile husband and wife— now splitting their time between L.A. and Texas—reflect on their big day, life after marriage and some sweet new traditions. HONEYMOON PHASE EC After our wedding, all we wanted to do was relax. The following day, we left for two heavenly weeks to unwind at the Four Seasons Bora Bora. We still talk about that trip incessantly. Everything about that time in our lives was magical. MOVING IN EC We didn’t live together until we were married. It felt different—infinitely more incredible than before. We thoroughly enjoyed nesting at our home near Larchmont as we spent every waking, non-working moment possible with each other. That hasn’t changed. AH I get to live with my best friend and hang out with her all the time. What’s better than that? It’s perfect on every level. TEXAS EC We’re both originally from Texas, and I have always been an avid baker—I bake almost every night. I find it very therapeutic. I opened Bird Bakery in San Antonio last spring and we both spend about three days a week there—Arms helps with taste testing! [The couple has a rule that the longest they can be apart is four days.] AH Opening the bakery was something that Elizabeth had always planned to do. We both love the business aspect of things, and Elizabeth is a marketing genius. THOUGHTS ON MARRIAGE AH My advice is to understand (and appreciate and celebrate) that you are no longer living just for yourself. The two of you have a chance to create an entirely new life together, exactly as you both see fit. All of the love, work and time is an investment that will pay off for decades to come. When you are both 90 years old, sitting in rocking chairs on your front porch, you can look at each other and say, “What an amazing ride we have had”—because you have truly done it together. ANNIVERSARIES EC There are few things I love more than tradition. We have the monogrammed toasting flutes from our wedding schlepped all over the continental United States for our anniversaries; we order the same CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT The wedding and groom’s cake, and we pour two of the signature newlyweds. cocktails from our reception. We love to talk about our wedding Bird Bakery treats. On the (clearly), our honeymoon and just be with each other and our dog, set of The Lone Archie (named after Cary Grant). Unfortunately, he missed our last Ranger in Angel Fire, New Mexico. > ÛiÀÃ>ÀÞ]ÊLÕÌÊÜiÊV>Õ} ÌÊ ÊÕ«Ê ÊiÛiÀÞÌ }°ÊU

fashion SWEET THINGS

One big-hearted designer goes beyond borders for dream-worthy bridal fashion

M

elissa Sweet makes a return to design after a refreshing two-year sabbatical in Costa Rica (where she now resides). In a breathtaking new collection for David’s Bridal, she continues to evolve her vintage-inspired creations. “The partnership brings [my brand’s] aesthetic to those who might not have the opportunity to experience it otherwise,” says Sweet of the modestly-priced styles, which include an off-the-shoulder tulle ball gown encrusted with metallic thread embellishments and a column silhouette with peplum trim. To give back, 100% of the proceeds from her relaunched bespoke collection, Melissa Sweet Sacred, benefit Sweet’s Petaluma-based Vida Auténtica, a nonprofit dedicated to developing communities in her adopted country. “[The program] allows [women] to look beautiful while connecting with a meaningful cause, and that’s sacred to me.” $950-$1,400; davidsbridal.com; bespoke, from $5,000; melissasweetsacred.com.U

rom the first crack of egg to final presentation, this Charm City Cakes West masterpiece requires two artisans and more than 60 hours of labor stretched over one week. The edible lace begins with 300-500 hand-scored fondant cutouts affixed to three of five tiers. Bakers meticulously pipe royal icing lines to connect them; the effect mimics one continuous piece of delicate overlay. To field the influx of west coast inquiries for such custom artistry, Baltimore’s “Ace of Cakes” Duff Goldman established a Melrose Avenue outpost this past summer. Need more inspiration? ith restaurant critic Josh Sens and winemaker James Stewart on the intimate guest list, this wedding was a culinary rendezvous down to officiant Perry Butler (maĂŽtre d’ of legendary NorCal spot Perry’s). Following a festive Friday lobster boil at Rutherford Grange, S.F. native and wine publicist Charlotte Milan walked the winery path toward geologist Christopher Spill last May at exclusive Cliff Lede Vineyards. Inside the art-accented tank room, Sausalito chef Katie Powers devised a feast culled from area farms: kaffir-enlivened greens; hand-rolled lasagna with herb bĂŠchamel; salsa verde tri-tip; and rainbow-rippled Chioggia beets and baby artichokes. “We both cook and shop from the farmers’ market. La Dolce Vita

Band of Outsiders Sr. Marketing & Communications Director Nicole Cari and HuffPost Live Host/Correspondent Jacob Soboroff celebrate with a week of festivities at her famiglia’s farmhouse in Tuscany

RINGS Jacob proposed with a family ring he got from my dad,

but since I’m not much of a big diamond kind of girl, we picked out a stack of bands (Cathy Waterman, Dean Harris and Zoe) for me to wear everyday. We found his ring together at OK on 3rd Street.

Soboroff and Cari

CEREMONY We wanted the entire wedding to feel super Tuscan, so using hay barrels as benches seemed the most natural choice for the setting.

WELCOME Every house on the property [there are 8] got a wooden wine crate filled with Chianti, bottles of water, bug spray, sunscreen, Advil, biscotti, and a guide to the area that Jacob and I made.

OUT ON THE TOWN Castellini in Chianti is the closest village to our house (10 minutes) and it’s absolutely charming. There are no cars allowed. There’s the most delicious pizzeria in the center where they make each pizza in a wood-burning oven. We set all of the outdoor tables in the center of town and kept the wine, beer, and pizzas flowing for hours.

POOLSIDE RECEPTION I had heard

that the bride and groom don’t eat, but we sure did. Every course was delicious. And it couldn’t have been a more beautiful night. As we were sitting down for dinner around the pool, the colors of the sky were spectacular and the stars started appearing. It was magical.

t was a wrong turn en route to Provence that led British interior designer Kathryn Ireland to the one. “We came across this house in Montauban, and I said: ‘I want it!’” she explains. Twenty-three blissful years later, the Santa Monica-based star of Bravo’s “Million Dollar Decorators” is opening La Castellane to couples in search of a special place to get hitched. Set on 50 acres of farmland overlooking the Tescou Valley, the Tuscan-style Quercy stone-and-adobe estate (which dates back to 1870) offers endless possibilities: a ceremony amid the wildflowers; dinner on the south terrace; dancing in the al fresco dining room; and a wisteria-draped converted cow barn Vogue Living called “one of the 100 most beautiful outdoor rooms in the world.” The designer already has a cracker-jack wedding team on speed dial, including L.A.-based event planners Quo Vadis Concierge, French chef Daniel de la Falaise, who trained at London’s esteemed Harry’s Bar, and winemaker Laurent Cazottes, whose credits include the wedding of Kate Moss. The residence features 10 bedrooms and sleeps up to 16; its event capacity accommodates 100 comfortably—not counting the property’s 11 permanent residents: three black Arabian horses, five chickens and three cats. lacastellane.net.

velyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford’s famous “party novels” gloriously paraded eccentric characters of high society through their pages—always well-dressed and up for a laugh. This carefree generation inspired Julie Chapgier to turn to British history when planning her union to Brian Biel. “I wanted white tie because I live in a fantasyland,” the L.A.-based bride admits with a giggle. She settled for black tie, but the goal was the same: By evening’s end, someone must be swinging a tuxedo jacket overhead. Having met on Match.com, the shy couple imagined a sweet conclusion to a dashing courtship. He: A Southern-born VP of design for the family business, Hillstone Restaurant Group (Houston’s, Rutherford Grill, R+D Kitchen, among others). She: a French-born associate at Imperial Capital. It wasn’t until they began an impassioned conversation about restaurant design that they really clicked. “He had me at, spotlights at each table,” Chapgier says. Nearly 15 months of dating and globetrot-

ting culminated in a park-bench proposal at the Musée Rodin in Paris, followed by an euphoric escape to Marrakech. For the celebration at the Biel family estate in Napa Valley, Chapgier hoped for a scene out of Gosford Park. “Very clean, very masculine—I’m really not a girlie girl—very polished,” she says. Nearly six feet tall, she wore a Grecian-style Vera Wang gown for the ceremony under the sycamores and changed into an Alexander Wang cocktail number for the reception. As part of the formal English hunting lodge look, a stuffed owl, fox, armadillo (all from their personal collection) and other creatures of the forest were perched atop book stacks, and vintage postcards from the Marché aux Puces acted as place cards. The latest member of the Biel restaurant family, Paula LeDuc Fine Catering went all out with shucked oysters and Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé Champagne. Elegance gave way to merriment. Once the music began, Chapgier’s literary paragons would have been proud. The guests partied “Gangnam Style,” and the “stuffed” animals joined the revelers on the dance floor. •

laire Birnbaum and Eric Block grew up not far from each other in Beverly Hills, but they didn’t actually meet until high school years, when their families were vacationing on the same beach in Maui. “We like to say we dated for 10 years. Officially, though, I wasn’t allowed to go on a date until I was 16,” says Birnbaum. “So for a year, Eric would come over to my house, have dinner and hang out.” All grown up —Birnbaum works for an educational nonprofit, Block is a CPA—the pair has a standing Friday night date. Unknowingly, Birnbaum almost cancelled on the particular Friday Block had planned to propose. He suggested she’d feel better after dinner at one of their favorite restaurants, The Hungry Cat, followed by a quiet evening at home. “As we were getting ready for bed, he pulled out a little box and that was it. Perfect. Simple. Heartfelt.” A decade after that meet cute (and a rehearsal dinner at The Hungry Cat), Roger Birnbaum (then co-CEO of MGM) gave away his little girl during an intimate June ceremony at Saddlerock Ranch, hidden in the Malibu foothills. Suzanne Goin from Lucques plated wild salmon and short ribs in the clearing before they struck up the band. “My only request was that they learn the song “Call Me Maybe” a week before the wedding. I couldn’t imagine a party without it.” •

ot since Chriselle Lim launched the heavily trafficked fashion blog The Chriselle Factor in 2010 had the L.A.-based stylist been faced with a more daunting aesthetic challenge. Two years after she met Allen Chen through a mutual friend, the nervous import/ export exec proposed on bended knee at a beachside restaurant overlooking the Redondo Beach pier. A vision board in Lim’s downtown L.A. loft soon abounded with far-flung European milieus and clippings of bright, fanciful garden parties that only the Greystone Mansion, the majestic former Doheny estate in Beverly Hills, could mirror. In a lace sweetheart dress Lim designed with local couturier Arminé Ohanessian, the bride and groom exchanged vows in an afternoon ceremony on the property’s manicured terrace. “Everyone kept saying it was so hot. Thankfully our planner was there to hand out parasols because Allen and I were so in the moment that we didn’t even notice.” Along the short stroll over to the reception dinner, 130 guests enjoyed cocktails beneath a corridor of soaring Italian cypress trees filled with the sounds of acoustic guitars. Chen, who insisted the rehearsal dinner take place at his favorite Chinese restaurant in the Valley, helped design the wedding menu with expert caterer Wolfgang Puck. “The tuna tartare and truffled pasta were perfect,” says Chen. As the sun set shortly after their first dance, Lim surprised her groom with a white 1962 Rolls-Royce to whisk them off to the afterparty atop West Hollywood’s London hotel. The following week, they settled into Chen’s childhood home in Manhattan Beach, which they are currently in the process of renovating. olly Hanrahan was content to leave her crush on fellow MTV coworker Clint Stapleton at that; fortunately, her boss was not. “The minute I told him, he went directly to Clint,” she remembers. A month after the tip-off, Stapleton invited her to grab a drink near their Santa Monica office. Six years after that first date in 2005, Stapleton, now a music supervisor at reality television company 495 Productions, took Hanrahan, manager of music business affairs at NBC Universal, to Santa Barbara for her 29th birthday. While they watched the sunset from the beach, he waited for a quiet moment: “At one point, a group of 15 cheerleaders came running out in front of us!” he laughs. Finally, he presented Hanrahan with an antique diamond ring, which Hanrahan’s best friend and maid of honor, actress Kirsten Dunst, helped to select. Following a nine-month engagement, July nuptials ensued at Butterfly Lane Estate in Montecito. The bride customized a two-piece lace chiffon and tulle dress by Monique Lhuillier and accessorized the gown with a Mantilla veil—a nod to her groom’s Mexican heritage. A Southern feast of fried chicken and mac-and-cheese (to honor Stapleton’s Texan childhood), and tables were named after characters from the couple’s favorite television show, “The Wire.” For their first dance, the newlyweds invited all 160 guests to join them for their first dance to Aretha Franklin’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” “I see pictures of it now and I’m like, ‘Wow, everyone came out!’” Hanrahan recounts. “I don’t remember that,” à iÊ>``ðʺ Ê ÕÃÌÊÀi i LiÀÊLi }ÊÌ iÀiÊÜ Ì Ê Ì°»ÊU VENUE Butterfly Lane Estate CAKE Christine Dahl MENU Pure Joy Catering DRESS Monique Lhuillier FLORIST Flowerwild RINGS Single Stone ENTERTAINMENT Flashback Heart Attack PLANNER Sonia Hopkins/XOXO Bride RENTALS Classic Party Rentals, Bella Vista Lighting STATIONERY Minted HONEYMOON St. Lucia

en Kennedy and Michael Brittain’s love story began in the desert, after a fortuitous meeting at a friend’s birthday party in Palm Springs. “For our first date, he took me on a motorcycle ride up the coast. You could say it has been the longest first date ever,” says Kennedy. They wasted no time moving in together and started planning for the arrival of baby Averi (now 17 months). Over the course of Kennedy’s pregnancy, Brittain was sent on frequent outings for Pad Thai. One night, he returned to their Echo Park home with the goods—plus two fancy glasses, a bottle of Champagne and a small box revealing a custom Sarah Hood engagement sparkler. Naturally, they were drawn to California’s dusty wilderness to make it official. They discovered Le Haut Dèsert Aerie, a mom-and-pop bed and breakfast on a 40-acre conservancy and began to assemble the personal, DIY affair: Cactus flowers were sourced from the Yucca Valley; vintage glasses were collected by Kennedy’s family in Texas; and Brittain, the director of print design for FX Networks, designed the collage-like invitation booklets. Says Kennedy, “Because our relationship is a little bit untraditional, we didn’t want our wedding to feel expected or typical. We wanted to throw a beautiful party celebrating our love for each other and our daughter.” • venue Le Haut Dèsert Aerie menu Mojave Monaco Dress J. thought she was out of my league,” admits Tim Ryan of meeting Kelly Yahr at Loyola Marymount University in 2004. Five years later, sparks flew at a mutual friend’s place in Venice Beach. Ryan was premiering his surf documentary On a Rail, and L.A.-based Yahr gave him her number before his return to San Diego. “Eventually, she sent me a text that said, ‘Get your booty back up here,’ and I thought, ‘This might turn out well,’” Ryan recalls. His hunch paid off. Fast forward two years: Ryan, a partner at boutique creative design studio Type G, organized a trip to Big Sur for Yahr’s birthday. En route, he stopped at a scenic outlook where he planned to drop to one knee. Ryan told Yahr he was going back to the car to grab his camera so he could get the ring. “I had my camera in my hand, so I thought that was weird,” laughs Yahr, a project manager at digital agency Cuker. After a 363-day engagement, the Solana Beach couple wed at the lush San Diego Botanic Garden, in front of 120 friends and family members. Yahr wore a custom Elizabeth Fillmore silk dress with lace appliqués and a lavender-studded wreath in her hair, and Ryan’s close friend officiated the ceremony in the private Walled Garden. The couple’s first dance was to “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton. “When we started dating Tim would serenade me with that song,” the bride reveals. “It always made me blush.” Following the reception, the pair led the way to the after-party at nearby sushi bar Tomiko in the groom’s “something borrowed”—his father’s classic 1962 Cadillac

N

either one of us was looking for a relationship, but when you click, you just know,” says actress Brittany Shaw (“CSI,” “Body of Proof”) of the day she met her future husband, singer/songwriter Blake Johns, at his Memorial Day BBQ in 2007. Four-and-a-half-years later, while on a New Year’s vacation at Johns’ family home in Hawaii, the Phoenix native popped the question. “Blake had given me a set of [golf] clubs tagged with my name the night before, and while on the course the next morning, I looked at the bag and my name had been changed from Brittany Shaw to Brittany Johns. And then he dropped down to one knee.” Following a rehearsal dinner at Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, the two wed in September at The Biltmore in Santa Barbara before 175 close friends and relatives. “I wanted that warm, glowing feeling inside and out at our reception, so there were a ton of candles,” says Shaw, who hired Santa Barbara planner Alexandra Kolendrianos. The couple also flew in fresh Hawaiian leis to gift their parents after the cake cutting; Shaw presented her unsuspecting groom with a Mariachi band (who hid in the bushes until it was time to lead guests into cocktail hour) and a groom’s cake in the shape of the original “La Bamba” vinyl (a song dear to his childhood). “My favorite moment was when Blake then surprised me by singing ‘Stand By Me.’” •

O

ne splendid Positano evening in 2011, at a chic little hotel on the beach, Tyler Mitchell confessed his love to Stephanie Oshana with a cushion-cut sparkler he designed with Louis Newman. Then, the lovebirds spotted something unusual. Recalls Oshana, “It was so beautiful. A clear day opened up and there was actually a twister far out on the deep ocean.” The stirring sight was not lost on the young couple. After meeting in 2009 and dating discreetly for a year, the pair left their native Connecticut for San Francisco so Mitchell, co-owner of the Mitchell Family of Stores, could run the west coast Wilkes Bashford stores (of which he is fashion director). He would not move without Oshana, then a jewelry specialist and assistant buyer. She took the leap. “I knew then, if I moved with him, he’d be my lifelong partner.” For the August affair, the families kicked off four days of events at The Napa Valley Reserve, where a gourmet barbecue spread— including pasta, charcuterie, Aperol spritzes and local wines— fueled the bocce competitions. Rehearsal dinner at Yountville tasting collective Ma(i)sonry (and a surprise performance by the Jersey Boys) followed on Friday. “Seeing my 88-year-old grandmother dancing around was so magical!” says Oshana. And for the nuptials at friend Ken Fulk’s Durham Ranch in St. Helena, the couple called upon the area’s doyenne of events

elegance. Laurie Arons designed a strictly black-tie evening incorporating the groom’s desire for a rustic look with the bride’s unabashed flair for “girlie” romance. “I assured them I could use modern stripes and add blush pale pinks and peonies to soften the setting,” explains Arons. And decadent it was; on offer was everything from an oyster bar to truffled pearl mac-and-cheese. “It was over-the-top,” gushes Oshana of the custom SusieCakes confection driven up for the occasion and carne asada tacos for the after-party. The future Mrs. Mitchell selected an Oscar de la Renta peplum gown, Louis Newman chandelier earrings and a vintage Cartier bracelet. Extra special was a garter affixed with one of the groom’s baby charms—crafted by Mitchell’s mother, who also created the flower girl dresses. Mitchell’s tuxedo, designed by Jim Shay, lent a sharp touch in midnight blue. Keeping the 140-guest event intimate, Mitchell was attended by his two brothers, Chris and Scott, while Oshana chose best friend, Alyson Harrington, as maid of honor. True to the couple’s propensity for whirlwinds, a strong gust blew Oshana’s veil off as they held hands at the altar. “I didn’t realize, and everyone gasped. I just didn’t care. Looking around, surrounded by our closest family and friends, it was only about that one special moment.” •

Kay diebel and FranKie avalon, January, 1963 long before bieber Fever, there was Frankie avalon, the original tween heartthrob. He was from south philadelphia, the home of “american bandstand,” and with a wink and an air-kiss he could melt the thumping hearts of schoolgirls everywhere. at the height of his career, the performer became love struck himself. against pressure from his handlers (and to the dismay of legions of teenage fans), avalon, 22, and model Kay diebel, 25, exchanged vows at north Hollywood’s st. Charles Catholic Church—and remain an item to this day after 50 years of marriage and eight children.
