Botanical perfumer Alexandra Balahoutis formulates each original fragrance with certified organic, wildcrafted, biodynamic, and hydro-distilled¹ essences. Limited batches are then reverently hand-blended, set into a base of custom-distilled esprit de Cognac,² and aged for a minimum of six months. All Strange Invisible Perfumes are completely botanical and unfiltered. They are decanted and bottled in Venice, California. 1. Hydro-distillation is a gentle immersion method that captures the complete aromatic profile of a plant, including the fine aroma chemicals that cannot be captured with steam distillation. 2. Esprit de Cognac is the original perfumers’ alcohol used in France from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century. Strange Invisible Perfumes commissions a twelfth-generation master distiller in Napa Valley to produce this premium spirit from non-GMO, pesticide-free grapes.

hat to get the person who has everything? Always a dilemma...especially when that person is you, our reader, who already gets to live in this glorious state! What more could you want than getting to breathe in the California air 365 days a year? So we present the Winter issue, chock-full of the best this state has to offer, as our

gift to you. From our iconic cover girl to the most beautiful garden estate, a modern home with views of the Channel Islands to a legend’s seaside ranch, fashions that pop and the ultimate gift guide, this issue has everything you need to luxuriate in our golden state. Cindy Crawford is beautiful. Seriously. Pretty on the outside but, more importantly, on the

inside. She also knows how to work an angle. During our photo shoot, she was aware of the light, which way worked best for her, and how to move her body for the most interesting shot— a consummate professional through and through. With brains (a scholarship to Northwestern for chemical engineering) and a great head for success (look at her thriving businesses), she is the ultimate C woman…and we are so happy to have her grace our cover. Designer, collector, artist—Richard Shapiro is a true Renaissance man. We showcased his Malibu home a while back, and it is one of my favorite homes we’ve ever published. Not to be outdone, though, his L.A. garden is just as impressive. It is rare for us to profile a single garden, but this more than lives up to the honor of an in-depth look. The fact that he single-handedly cuts and shapes each boxwood makes this stunning oasis even more special to share. Toro Canyon is a place in the Santa Barbara hills that is majestic—plain and simple. Think wilderness mixed with endless views. It is a spot people dream about. One remarkable house there, showcased in “Grand Canyon,” is a perfect example of using the landscape to the best advantage. With beautiful lines and vegetation that is synergistic with the architecture, it’s certainly a home to take note of. We also invite you inside a legend’s California estate. William Randolph Hearst built an amazing castle, as we all know. But were you aware of his majestic ranch full of exotic animals? We look back at his world and share his passions. I actually drove by dozens of zebras on his ranch just a few months back on a trip to Big Sur—his dreams continue to inspire many decades later. And, as this is the time of year to give (and receive), we try to help make the search a little easier. Our editors scoured the best of the best and boiled it down to a curated selection inspired by California’s beloved getaways. Which brings us back to the beginning, that living here, in this amazing

PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE

I

In Oliver Peoples, Amanda Hearst plays princess for a day at Hearst Castle

still don’t know how he got everything up there!” marvels Amanda Hearst of the massive antique ceilings, fireplaces and 25,000 artifacts her great-grandfather William Randolph Hearst used to furnish Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The Manhattanbased model, journalist and philanthropist recently spent a day at the property starring in Oliver Peoples’ Resort/Spring 2014 campaign shot by Lisa Eisner. While she’s been going to the castle since she was a baby, “for the first time in my life I was able to

walk around as if I lived there…wearing pajamas in the bedroom, playing with the Arabian horses. It was surreal.” Hearst works with the castle’s Preservation Foundation and says she would eventually like to start her own jewelry collection. At the top of her Christmas list this year: “Will Cotton painted a portrait of me, which is at my mom’s house in the Hamptons. I’d really love to get one of the sketches he did to frame for my apartment.” oliverpeoples.com; hearstcastlepreservation.org. •

17th of September 1755. In the offices of the solicitor Mr. Choisy, a young Master Watchmaker from Geneva named Jean-Marc Vacheron is about to hire his first apprentice. This agreement is the first known reference to the founding watchmaker of a prestigious dynasty and it represents the establishment of Vacheron Constantin, the oldest watchmaking manufacturer in the world in continuous operation.

Ever since this agreement, and true to the history that built its reputation, Vacheron Constantin has been committed to passing on its knowledge to each of its Master Watchmakers in order to guarantee the excellence and durability of its craftsmanship and of its timepieces.

Renaissance Movement

RH extends its West Coast sensibility into the cultural stratosphere ary Friedman is having a Medici moment. Credited with transforming Restoration Hardware from a purveyor of industrial fixtures to RH, a luxury lifestyle brand, the chairman/creator/curator/co-chief executive officer is now setting his sights beyond tufted sectionals and beveled mirrors—carving out a niche for the Corte Madera-based company as a cultural juggernaut and patron of the arts. This fall, Friedman debuted the ambitious new RH Contemporary Art platform, a business comprising an online gallery (complete with e-commerce), a print journal, an RH Music’s artist residency program and a concert at the six-story brick-and-mortar space in Greek Theatre. Manhattan devoted to showcasing the oeuvre of RH’s nascent roster of emerging talent. A site in Los Angeles where Friedman plans to mount the West Coast premiere of “Rain Room” (an interactive work by Random International that drew record crowds at New York’s MoMA last summer, and for which he holds the North American rights) is forthcoming, with plans for future galleries in select U.S. cities. There’s also talk of hotels, restaurants, architectural services and a clothing line.

“Our customers buy things that we curate, so the opportunity to curate art that we love is in some ways no different,” he explains, adding: “There’s more square footage on the walls of America’s homes than there is on the floors—that’s a lot of space that needs attention.” A music initiative is also part of the agenda: In September, RH Music introduced the first singer/songwriters to the family, including soul-infused chanteuse Edei, bluegrass duo Larkin Poe and retro pop act The Brixtons, with a private show at New York’s Highline Ballroom and a concert at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. The entrée into the struggling industry is an unlikely move, but perhaps entirely expected for a man increasingly known for galvanizing businesses. After all, this is the guy who reacts to a recession by going more high-end and continues to open overthe-top experiential retail spaces, when most are throwing their resources online. Friedman (a Belvedere Island resident) partially attributes his philosophy to a West Coast sensibility: “Our attitudes are more open than closed, and we’re influenced and motivated by our brethren in Silicon Valley who are breaking all the rules and changing the world,” he says. But when it comes down to it, the strategy has less to do with geographic variables and more to do with instinct: “Some people say, ‘Oh, don’t take things so personally.’ But those people are not our people,” he emphasizes. “We’re a company that takes everything very personally. And we’re not going to be right all the time, but at least we’ll be passionate about it.” rhmusic.com; rhcontemporaryart.com; rh.com.•

t was a cool evening in October when Hollywood moguls and mavens arrived at the former Beverly Hills Post Office to fête its new incarnation as the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. The evening, like its sponsor, Salvatore Ferragamo—which presented a fashion show—was a balanced amalgamation of a heritage and a future— a fresh space waiting to be filled with song and dance. The Italian brand, in celebration of its 100th anniversary in America, sent a special collection of looks for an entirely contemporary woman down the runway. The story of the fashion house is as much one of a young shoe prodigy as it is a Hollywood tale. After arriving in Boston in 1914 at age 16, Salvatore Ferragamo found his way to Santa Barbara, then the locus of the entertainment industry, where he started making shoes for movie stars. Hired by the American Film Company (aka Flying “A” Studios and now Twentieth Century Fox) to create footwear for silent films, Ferragamo outpaced his assignments and was soon providing entire shoe wardrobes for large-scale films throughout the ’20s, such as D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East and Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments. Longing to wear his designs off-set, actresses began commissioning custom-made shoes for their personal wardrobes. It seemed only natural that when the movie industry moved to Los Angeles, Ferragamo went with it, opening The Hollywood Boot Shop at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue in 1923. Talent like Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and Rudolf Valentino—themselves experiencing a new kind of celebrity—flocked to him. “The glamour of that time was very exciting,” says the brand’s creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti, from the Beverly Wilshire FROM ABOVE Hotel days before the Annenberg gala Blush heels, $1,190. 100thCONTINUED ON PAGE 184 (and while

Heart Beat For François Nars, Holiday 2013 is all about celebrating the late French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin. After all, Nars connects the photographer’s unconventional narratives, overt sexuality and rule-breaking nature not only to his career choice as a makeup artist but also to his roles as founder and creative director of Nars. “Bourdin’s influence is everywhere in my life; it’s in the DNA of Nars. I’ve long incorporated his work into our collections—in names, colors, even inspiration for the campaign images,” says Nars. From bold, high-impact cinematic eye shadow in loud colors with names like Rage and Bad Behaviour, to a complete face palette called Crime of Passion, the collection pays homage to Bourdin’s part art, part fantasy legacy. narscosmetics.com. pouchette, $75. Her love of bohemian touches, tomboy comfort and bold Hollywood Regency style infiltrates everything she does, whether it’s designing her first namesake fragrance or her new Rodeo Drive flagship store. Architect and interior designer Daniel Romualdez created a striking façade for the store that’s based on the scent’s brass fretwork bottle cap. On the cusp of the holidays, C ventured beyond the glossy black door of her Hollywood Hills residence to see how the daring interior designer prepares for a season of entertaining. When do you get started? I hoard a new theme as early as Halloween. I don’t ever put anything up before December, though. What are your entertaining traditions? My father is British, and it gave me the opportunity to arrange a giant Christmas breakfast buffet of all the items I love that I never have—sausage rolls, bangers, pastries and blood sausage— for a big group of family and friends. I try to get a gift for everyone so even drop-bys have a little something to open. I also host an evening Christmas party that alternates between sit-down dinner and buffet. I’ve probably thrown a dozen all-out Willy Wonka-style gingerbread house decorating and cookie dough ornament parties for my godchildren. Down the table, I set monochromatic or striped candy in silver dishes on different pedestal heights. I really get into the whole stage production of it. Your philosophy on outdoor decorations? I prefer only white twinkle lights, unless you are masterfully talented at some sort of natural theme, such as pinecone wreaths with green garlands. This season’s thematic inspiration? I wanted to use part of my Schumacher fabric and trim collection for table decor and to pair that with the black, red and green pressed glass I have collected over time. It is incredibly durable, since it mimicked cut crystal during financially trying times. The lack of delicacy makes it all the more fun to collect and actually use. What’s your secret? Repeat a base theme tonally and add one simple pop. I am a more over-the-top type, but my profession and style have been practiced to accommodate that. Starched linens, polished silver, narcissus and greens are the most elegant base for tartan table runners, red felt underskirts or velvet-trimmed napkins. What has been your most elaborate design scheme? Huge rooms simultaneously decorated in distinct themes. One was only white, greens and silver with real pears and grapes affixed to garlands; the next was persimmons, tangerines, coral-hue balls and embroidered ribbons with authentic peacock feather ornaments, fans Layered textiles from McDonald’s new F. Schumacher & Co. line (front to back): and birds. (I decided from then on that papier-mâché Firenze, $92/yard, Honey Comb, $80/ fruit would be just fine.) I love that you can actually be yard, and Vanderbilt Velvet, $150/yard. Eclectic pressed-glass patterns and sort of insane at Christmas and somehow, it is excusable colors include decadent black, if done with a good eye. marymcdonaldinc.com. • chartreuse and this emerald green.

n 2003, a pair of former debutantes and self-professed doers with a mutual deep-seated passion for thank-you notes set out with some healthy postgrad naïveté and a letterpress. Jamie Grobecker and Chelsea Shukov’s idea for bespoke stationery, Sugar Paper, would utilize traditional materials but swap thick, creamy card stock with stark white. Out of a tiny Century City shop and adding a Brentwood Country Mart outpost in 2005, the two produced seriously high-quality invitation suites that appealed to a younger, upscale clientele. The niche designs met demand for grocery lists on recycled craft paper and smart sentiments—catch-all “You’re Awesome,” or “Stay Positive, Stay Strong” (notes for cancer patients, instead of sympathy cards). “We believe form follows function,” says Shukov. While also wholesaling to 800 retailers globally, they’ve seen overall sales grow 61% over the past five years. That’s not because the profit margin on a $6 card is high. The arcane process requires many hands for typesetting, testing and mixing Pantone hues, inking, heated foiling, feeding paper, lining envelopes. The only corners being cut are on the scalloped notesets, even as they expand: This month, a collection of hand-lettered cards and coasters in a range of pale pinks, charcoal, gold and cream will launch with J.Crew. They’ve collaborated with Mark and Graham on the monogram company’s stationery debut. And for an eight-week run with Target of color-block paper datebooks, Shukov explains, they maximized the look: “It’s not a letterpress wannabe. You’re not going to letterpress a datebook, so we can bring the style to [Target’s] price point.” To accommodate this growth, a dreamy openair printing studio in West L.A. houses four letterpresses. In this world of slipper chairs, linen pinboards and campaign hardware, office supplies are off-the-charts chic. “Our products are not something Jamie and I create on a whim,” adds Shukov of correspondence cards in the lightest ethereal pink and bold, black-and-white-striped journals. “We really use what we create.” sugarpaper.com. •

reen roofs, Mediterranean ground cover, droughttolerant plants instead of English gardens, spaced plantings to avoid a “fire ladder” effect. For veteran Blasen Landscape Architecture, every detail is analyzed. Notes principal Eric Blasen, “Doing a meadow, you don’t just throw some seeds down.” This angular, manicured look—a shapely minimalism—shines on a Napa Valley hillside. To play up the stellar view, “we added an infinity-edge pool and put lawn in between square pavers in two colors. It was originally intended to be a chessboard.” And on an unusually flat site in Atherton, the challenge was size. “We planted ginkgo trees to take the scale of the house down. We wanted the pool to feel more like a pond, so we kept the paving to a minimum. At the end, we nested a stone firepit and boulders. Blurring the lines of paving…We’re contrasting geometries.” blasengardens.com.

ed Medicine didn’t win any points for refusing to seat the former L.A. Times food critic upon opening. Regardless, the buzzing Beverly Hills spot has been swarming with style-setters and gourmets for three years now. What began with a heady Southeast Asian menu—interpreted with unusual herbs and delicate flowers—has gradually evolved into Jordan Kahn’s studio of ephemeral creation. Alongside the avant-garde chef, managing partner Noah Ellis has curated wines with laser acidity and of-the-moment cocktails to match

(#89 combines vintage bourbon, sweet vermouth, cherry heering and orange juice). However inspired, the days of bánh mì were numbered. Today, a fresh lineup reflects Kahn’s modern proclivities—a style dubbed the “new naturalism.” The artistry on each plate is a miniature world to explore. rom New York to California, artist Doug Aitken’s multimedia kinetic art installation—a moving Amtrak train—traversed the U.S. this past September with 10 performance-filled whistlestops. The onboard chef vetted for Station to Station was Leif Hedendal, who researched urban farms, dairies and farmers’ markets cross-country and cooked all day in a minuscule galley. With gastronomic cred locally (Greens) and overseas (Noma), the Bay Area private chef and caterer also throws periodic Dinner Discussions, hosting names like Alice Waters and Ben Kinmont. In L.A., after Station to Station came to a halt, a citywide spectacle had begun. Airbnb—like VRBO for the design set—had installed five smartly decorated prefabs around town. There, invited curators—James Franco, Lake Bell, Molly Sims, Moby, Anjelica Huston—hosted events, while top chefs such as Willie Jane’s Govind Armstrong and Sqirl Preserves’ Jessica Koslow helmed culinary festivities. Airbnb’s final event honored Aitken and his project—in his hometown of Venice. Fittingly, Hedendal prepared the intimate Cook’s Garden by HGEL post-feast. Atop al fresco tables, blooms and branches were arranged in vases by Humble Ceramics, which also provided bowls, plates and cazuelas. Courses showcased his deference to onthe-fly findings: “I started outlining when I first got to the [Santa Monica] Farmers’ Market. I saw a lot of nice mushrooms, and they made up for the lack of meat.” The fare was soulful: batter-fried purslane with zesty chile and star anise; cherry tomato gazpacho; fresh lima beans; roasted sunchokes in brown butter. Short ribs sourced from Lindy & Grundy were braised in vermouth, sake and soy, and served on toasts. “I used to make a lot of vegetarian meals, so this was kind of in-between.” Hedendal says Station to Station was “one platform to talk about issues.” With this experience behind him, he’ll return to his salons (next up, Inverness). In the words of the train’s onboard manual: “As we travel on, the meals should reflect on our immediate past.” •

Myles-Lea in his Hollywood home. La Brea View. The completed portrait of the Lauder family. Resnick Roof View.

early eight months ago, the tall and lanky Jonathan Myles-Lea stepped off the plane at LAX, a Briton about to be replanted in the arid California basin. The internationally recognized landscape painter had already hit all the high points of his career: the Prince of Wales’ Highgrove Gardens, Princess Salimah Aga Khan’s Provençal abode, Oprah’s Montecito refuge and elaborate compounds outside Moscow and Shanghai. “I’ve done so many paintings for commission,” the white-jeans-clad artist proclaims. “Will the client like it? You never really relax.” So, in his comfy bungalow in Hollywood, surrounded by elegant Eames chairs, a wood-andiron-wrapped table, and inlaid cabinets filled with curios of white and glass, 44-year-old Myles-Lea created only the second painting he’s ever done just for pleasure as a professional artist. The scene is typical L.A.: bleached sun penetrating down upon two palm trees, the whites extra-extra white, bold stripes and a cloudless blue sky. It’s a new direction, but it’s easy to spot threads of continuity from his previous oeuvre documenting great estates. Look at the flatness of the picture, the precision of the shapes, its graphic nature, the studied exactitude that emanates from the canvas. “I love geometry and straight lines,” he says. His scrupulous style is entirely self-taught. Myles-Lea never attended art school, never went on the art fair circuit; today he still doesn’t have a gallery or dealer—not that that’s affected his career, which continues to flourish purely by word of mouth. He began by teaching himself to paint by copying Hans Holbein the Younger, and then a chance encounter with the late artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) in 1990 forever altered the course of his life. At the time, Myles-Lea was working for Channel 4 in London as a television presenter and studying History of Art and Architecture at the University of London. His boss took him to the tiny—often described as squalid—drinking den called The Colony Room in Soho, famous for harboring drunken poets, writers and artists. Bacon was there. “My boss introduced me as an artist,” MylesLea says, “and Bacon asked me what I was interested in, telling me, ‘I’m inspired by evil.’ My boss answered, ‘Oh, that’s not very nice, Francis,’” he says, laughing. Repeat visits to The Colony Room often meant that Myles-Lea was privy to the wild binges of the artistic set. On one occasion, Bacon had just sold a painting to a Japanese bank, which meant Champagne for all, and the next thing Myles-Lea knew, he was waking up in Bacon’s studio to the sound of scratching. “He was painting on an easel and copying >>

<< his own style from a postcard,” Myles-Lea says. Bacon told him he was a real artist and needed to resign from his job. “He was like this father figure, saying this to me,” Myles-Lea recalls. “And I trusted him.” After leaving television, MylesLea moved into the large, rambling, 12-bedroom estate Plas Teg in Wales, where the lady of the house asked him to paint the property, which was stuffed to the brim with live exotic birds, huge dogs and kittens. As part of earning his keep, he helped feed the animals and led tours. “We didn’t have much money,” he remembers. “I call it ‘stately squalor’ because the parrots ate better than we did—kiwi fruits and walnuts—while we had powdered soup.” Eventually, his mother, also an artist, decided he’d spent long enough with the birds and the beasts and brought him home. From there the commissions started pouring in. He posted an advertisement in Country Life in 1991 and received five phone calls the next morning. For his style of landscape painting, the process is agonizingly deliberate. He uses a 17th-century technique, beginning by creating handmade canvases made from wood wrapped in linen. Myles-Lea treats the canvas with several applications of homemade gesso (hot water, rabbit-skin glue granules and chalk dust). He uses Old Holland paints, a brand launched in 1664 and employed by old masters such as Vermeer. To accurately distill the property, FROM TOP The Rectory, Myles-Lea meets with clients five or six Litton Cheney, United Kingdom. The artist times, creating what he calls “layers” at work. Then there Lord High Treasurer are the layers of color, taken in by visiting to Queen Elizabeth I, and built between the grounds at different times of the year. 1555 and 1587.

Finally, the human interest element: What area does the family use the most? Where do the dogs like to sit? Where are the animals and birds on the property? He compiles photographs and sketches before launching into the über-detailed work. “Every painting kills me,” he says cheerfully. Every tree and every brick must be exact; the images are embedded with ciphers, symbols, coats of arms. It takes six to eight months to complete a single work. Myles-Lea also expanded into portraiture in a most unusual fashion: with a commission to paint the queen. He was working on a commission at Burghley House in 1997, when the owner asked him if he knew anybody who painted portraits. “I said I’d think about it, and she answered, ‘It’s a shame, because I’m looking for someone to paint the queen.’” When he was driving home, “I remembered the conversation, and I called her back, quickly. ‘Have I just turned down the opportunity to paint the queen?’ She said, ‘Yes, I think you have.’” A couple of days later, the royal office organized a sitting at St. James’s Palace. Myles-Lea asked Her Majesty to wear the Order of the Garter robes, which were originally designed in CONTINUED ON PAGE 184

ichard Shapiro, a world-renowned art collector, furniture designer and antiques dealer based in Los Angeles, is also a superbly creative and daring landscape designer. On a quiet street in Holmby Hills, Shapiro has created a lush environment for his HispanoMoorish residence. Hidden behind walls of Boston ivy and a forest of Japanese timber bamboo, it is an utterly private domain, silent and poetic—his escape from the world. Shapiro’s vision is a dreamscape of sculptural clipped boxwood. Meandering paths lead past a reflecting pool to hidden corners with dramatic steel sculptures. This verdant world—vivid year-round—feels much larger than its near-acre. Boundaries are blurred. Even his sprawling house and design studio are romantically shrouded in overgrown vines, and their tall windows reflect abstract patterns of leaves and branches. “I view my property as a vast canvas, and the creative possibilities are limited only by my imagination,” says Shapiro, who feels compelled to work on the landscape almost every day, pruning and planting, clipping, trimming, sweeping leaves and contemplating where to place new sculptures. “Rather than a garden, I think of it as an installation of land art.” Overlooking the large pool, a charming folly was designed to be the focal point of the grounds. This pool house was inspired by a Palladian villa and is complete with a handsome antique stone fireplace, hand-carved columns, an antique mirror and a large-scale lantern, meticulously designed by Shapiro. But it’s the surreal boxwood, inspired by the abstract hilltop gardens surrounding the turreted Château de Marqueyssac in southwest France, that is Shapiro’s theatrical tour de force. “On an annual tour through the Dordogne 10 years ago, I visited its 15th-century fortifications and cliff-top site and marveled at its endlessly swirling and surreal boxwood sculptures,” recalls Shapiro. He had started designing his garden about 16 years earlier as a labor of love. In a kind of frenzy, he dug up the lawn, and over the next nine years, he planted hundreds of boxwood in its place. The château garden, his inspiration, was originally planted in the 17th century by a pupil of André Le Nôtre, the designer of the Versailles gardens. At Marqueyssac, acres of overgrown topiaries are clipped in abstract shapes, a rare concept in France, where they are traditionally highly regimented and formally laid out, and never wildly imaginative and playful. “I returned home and began researching Buxus sempervirens—known as box,” says Shapiro. Some of his plants are acquired fully grown from a specialist nursery; others are planted with just a few tender branches. CONTINUED ON PAGE 184

hen Cindy Crawford was discovered in her hometown of DeKalb, Illinois, at 17, it came as a surprise both to her and to her family: “Girls in DeKalb didn’t dream of becoming models,” she says. “I think my dad actually thought model was another name for prostitute.” After sorting out any confusion, Crawford moved to New York, and the career that followed is one of the most legendary: more than 1,000 magazine covers worldwide, high-fashion advertising campaigns, long-running endorsement deals with some of the largest and most ubiquitous companies in the world (Revlon, Pepsi, Omega) and, of course, the title of original supermodel (joining other glamazons known by first names only: Naomi, Christy, Linda). At Café Habana in Malibu, Crawford is simply a local who lives a couple of miles down the road… albeit a local with connections (her husband of 15 years, Rande Gerber, whom she met at a wedding, owns the establishment, along with a collection of other bars and restaurants around the world). Now 47, Crawford is as radiant as ever. In a long gray cardigan, jeans and a cream-colored blouse, she is forthcoming about her years in the fashion business and the philosophy that guided her: “If we’re going to sleep together, then I want to get married,” she says figuratively of her client relations. “I’m investing in you and vice versa, and that’s been my approach to business.” This explains her long-standing contracts (she’s been an Omega watch ambassador for nearly two decades). After years of traveling between New York and their home in Brentwood, she and Gerber moved their family to Malibu shortly before their son, Presley, started kindergarten. “We had some friends who were here, and we really liked the way they lived,” she explains. “We kept saying to each other: ‘We think they have it right.’” Nearly 10 years have passed since their move to the beach, and Crawford can’t imagine living anyplace else. “Recently we contemplated traveling and home-schooling the kids. We brought the idea to them, but they both said if they could live anywhere, it would be here,” she says with a smile. “My son loves to surf. He won’t live anywhere there aren’t waves.” Fortunately for him, they recently built a second home in Cabo, where the waves are plentiful, as are the visits from their very next-door neighbor, George Clooney (they own adjoining properties, with separate houses). of retreat to your own corners.”

n Toro Canyon, an L-shaped slice of prime real estate in Santa Barbara, no one is stunned when they see an occasional mountain lion or bear ambling about in the rolling hills. But a boxy, modern board-form concrete house, sited in the center of 150 acres of untouched wilderness? Now that turns a few heads. The homeowners, film producer John Lesher and his wife, Christina Liao (a former film executive herself), embarked on a years-long saga to build on this untouched land that was not unlike the process of getting a movie made. “It took more than four years just to get the permits from the county,” says Liao, who tells the story with a little levity now that it’s behind her. “We had to install the septic system, the cistern. We built a road. It was a commitment.” One of the most surprising details about the property is that it was designed by Barbara Bestor, a Los Angeles architect known for building smart, progressive homes and retail spaces in the artsy neighborhoods on the east side of L.A., including Silverlake, Los Feliz and Beachwood Canyon. She’s the executive director of the Julius Shulman Institute at SCI-Arc, and her book Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake (Harper Design) is a coffee table staple in hipster households from Echo Park to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Despite her credentials, she isn’t an obvious choice for this kind of property, but she had known Lesher and Liao for nearly three decades, and the friends were eager to work together. The Lesher family lives in a traditional 1930s Georgian Colonial in town, and the decision to build a more streamlined modern vacation home was very deliberate. For Bestor, it was an opportunity to spread her wings. She found inspiration from unlikely and disparate sources, including the rugged landscape of Marfa, Texas, and the traditional layout of the California missions. “I’ve almost always worked in an urban setting, so this was the first time I could manipulate the passage, the entrance to the home, how you see it from the road. I could think about how you see it from afar, how you view that piece of coastline,”

she says. “Then you don’t see that crazy view until you’re at the front door, standing inside the courtyard.” If the exterior of the home appears to be boxy and Brutalist, made of solid concrete tinted a reddish brown to match the surrounding soil, once visitors reach the courtyard, the heaviness disappears. Retractable glass doors open to reveal a “wooden jewel box,” Bestor says of cedar-lined walls and ceilings. The 40-foot outdoor space at the center of the home is its focal point, which provides not only shelter from the powerful coastal winds but also a communal space to host friends, family and Lesher’s colleagues. “Barbara is a mom, and she knows how a family uses a space,” says Liao. “She has an innate sense of where things should go. There’s a big, open space where we can all be together with friends, and then the bedrooms and the guesthouse are very cozy, so you can kind of retreat to your own corners.” Bestor worked with landscape designers Isabelle Greene and Sally Paul to blend the home into its surrounding landscape in a seamless, low-maintenance way that also complied with strict fire codes. She also recruited The Archers, the interior design team of Richard Petit and Stephen Hunt, to help outfit the home with an unpretentious mix of organic-feeling modern pieces, bold textiles and punctuation marks of color, like a vibrant yellow door and a glossy emerald-green bed. It’s almost under-furnished, designed to let the architecture, the extreme privacy of the setting and the stunning views take center stage. “We didn’t want it to be overdecorated, like a vintage chair showroom, and The Archers understood that,” says Liao. Now that production has wrapped, Liao says that the family enjoys watching the weather roll in from the coast, the fog burn off into a sunny afternoon. They’ll gather around the fireplace and put a pot of soup on the stove. But the real benefit of getting away from it all? “It’s the parking,” she says. “We can spend an entire weekend without ever having to valet park.” •

OPPOSITE The Archers, the interior design team, discovered the rare pair of Thonet bentwood chairs, originally designed for a Swedish embassy in the ’70s, before the builders broke ground. Liao found the flokati rug and custom-made the 12-foot sofa.

The view is “even better in person,” according to Liao, who had to negotiate a complicated permitting system to build in the environmentally sensitive area. A striped Woolrich Hudson Bay blanket and vintage kilim rug add texture and color to the minimal bedroom. The detached guesthouse has a slightly more formal feel than the main house but is still completely relaxed. Bestor turned flagstone, brick and mortar into a feature wall in the dining room, using simple materials to dramatic effect. A spacious outdoor living room features both a fountain and a fireplace. Traditional butterfly chairs provide outdoor seating. L.A.-based Karen Harautuneian designed the kitchen. love this ranch. It is wonderful. I love the sea and I love the mountains and the hollows in the hills and the shady places in the creeks and the fine old oaks and even the hot brushy hillsides—full of quail—and the canyons—full of deer. It is a wonderful place. I would rather spend a month at the ranch than anyplace in the world.” – William Randolph Hearst Hearst and [architect] Julia Morgan did not have to invent a model farm. The Hearst family had owned and operated the ranch at San Simeon for fifty-five years when ground was broken for the hilltop buildings in February 1920. Construction continued for the next twenty-eight years, during which time Hearst and Morgan focused on the ranch buildings nearly as often as the hilltop ones. Though she had no prior experience in this form, Morgan designed San Simeon’s dairies, stables, dovecotes, hay barns, bunkhouses, aviaries, and orchards. She improved existing buildings, making them both more functional and more picturesque. She also oversaw the creation of many new ranch structures, including fish ladders, dams, bridges, reservoirs, rock walls, airplane hangars, landing strips, garages, polo fields, warehouses, and hundreds of miles of backcountry roads. Hearst was involved in every aspect of the building process, as more than one thousand of their surviving letters and nine thousand architectural drawings attest. One of Hearst’s earliest letters to Morgan emphasized: “The main thing at the ranch is the view.” Hearst’s animal collection expanded quickly. Morgan wrote him later that year: “The lions are beauties—about the size of St. Bernards and as well kept and groomed as human babies.” Exotic species including kangaroos, antelope, zebras, elephants, jaguars, polar bears, and giraffes began arriving in large numbers, eventually totaling approximately three hundred animals. To increase the dramatic effect, they mixed many of the grazing species together. Though picturesque, it was problematic. The animals often failed to mix well together, and it was challenging for Hearst’s guests and hilltop employees to drive up a six-mile road through a wild animal park… Hearst invited a few genuine Hollywood cowboys to the ranch, including Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson, and Will Rogers. The majority of his guests, however, only played cowboys onscreen. Hearst was thirty years older than most of them, which might explain his particular delight in leading them on long rides to the Hacienda. The journey was more than twenty miles. Many must have felt as Clark Gable did, when he reportedly whimpered to Gary Cooper after a long day in the saddle, “When we get to the brow of the next hill, we’ll see Los Angeles!”… As Vice-President of the Hearst Corporation’s Western Properties division, Stephen T. Hearst oversees the ranching operation today. He is also William Randolph Hearst’s great-grandson and one of sixty-five surviving members of the Hearst family. He states: “The Hearst Ranch still raises some of the finest cattle and horses. The Hearst Ranch now comprises more than 82,000 acres, making it the largest cattle ranch on the California coast. Seven generations have been privileged to be a part of the Piedra Blanca Rancho, the original name of the Hearst Ranch at San Simeon, California. I believe this very special place is home to every member of our family, no matter where they get their mail.” •

holding his arm in a deep red cast—an injury he incurred while trying to avoid a biker on the street in Florence). Though the sensibility of the collection unveiled at the Annenberg Center was a modern one, small throwbacks that echoed the brand’s star-studded DNA were woven throughout (while Ferragamo eventually returned to Italy, his relationship to the movie industry was cemented). “You think about the big change in Hollywood and the rise of actors and celebrity— Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo—that’s the reason I wanted to have this lingerie factor,” explains Gionetti. “For me it’s the very sophistication of Hollywood—the idea of sensuality, of neutrals, of beautiful craftsmanship like handmade embroidery.” To house the boudoir-inspired eveningwear was a Ferragamo pop-up store, with one-of-a-kind accessories—from graphic Lucite clutches to an enviably strappy python wedge. “The ideas really came from the archive, but were reinvented in a modern way,” notes the designer. “Sometimes using very 1930s materials—plexiglass, this kind of transparent and translucent effect. It’s part of Salvatore Ferragamo, but never nostalgic—very cool, very modern, linking the past with the future.” “I really feel that the Ferragamo consumer is in the L.A. style,” he continues. “It’s much more about the preciousness of the time that you spend being very healthy, being very sporty, very relaxed—but always very elegant.” •

KING OF HIS DOMAIN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 142

the 16th century, because the painting was to be placed in Drapers’ Hall (part of an old guild founded nearly 600 years ago), and across from one of his early influences: a Holbein portrait of Henry the VIII, who had donated the land to the guild. “I asked her if she could stand by the window [for better light],” he says. “And she said, ‘Oh, no, I can’t stand by the window.’ I asked her why and she said, ‘The last time I did that, a taxi driver looked up and saw me and crashed.’” Today, portraits are just another portion of Myles-Lea’s creative output, which also includes photography. He recently painted Evelyn Lauder, and shortly after, Evelyn’s son’s wife contacted him about doing their family in Palo Alto. That portrait, finished just last September, places the group in a classical frieze composition, with the mother gazing at the daughter (a great-granddaughter of Estée Lauder’s), the daughter gazing at her father, the son at his mother. The painting whispers with life, and of conversation, of pride and love and complicated relationships. But that’s not the only reason he’s here in California. It’s time for a change. Currently, Myles-Lea is delightedly traveling all over L.A., capturing his thoughts on the Hollywod sign, James Turrell at LACMA, and Joshua Tree National Park in his blog, While the Paint Dries, and exploring an entirely new direction: working on modern paintings of charismatic buildings in Palm Springs and Los Angeles. “This is my favorite place,” he says definitively. “I can’t seem to go to sleep because I’m so excited. It’s the light. It

changes the color of things and makes it so vivid it has a psychological effect on me. I feel so energized.” And as for all those beautifully detailed garden paintings? “I don’t want to repeat myself, but the Getty Villa would be quite fun, or the White House,” Myles-Lea muses, with a twinkle in his eye. •

SECRET GARDEN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 148

“The carefully sculpted plants, now numbering around 1,500, suggest to me the forms they might take,” says the designer. “The entire exercise is very fluid and spontaneous, with a great deal of accident, surprise, experimentation and randomness.” He planted the box and then hand-carved the plants into a maze of undulating, cloud-like forms. “The shapes are so mysterious and original,” says Shapiro. The clipped box project was the basis for what has become and remains his obsession. Shapiro conceived the clipped mounds and sculptures and does all the shaping and shearing by hand with specialized Japanese shears and clippers. Heavy-duty American versions go into action for rough work. More are added every year, and his skill at creating new effects reflects his passion. Well-worn Japanese leather gloves attest to Shapiro’s attacks on woody branches and rampant and unruly twigs. “It is a work in progress, always being refined and altered somewhat,” says Shapiro. “With these shears, the sculptural possibilities are endless, very precise and rapid. Gratification is instant.” Over the last few years, Shapiro has written his autobiography in leaves, covering every square foot of the free space, planting rare specimen trees and creating vast and wavy vistas in every direction, like a flock of green sheep roaming his land. The evergreen garden, tranquil and shaded, changes subtly from season to season. A burst of light green new growth and the beauty of mauve wisteria and blue jacaranda blossoms herald the spring. Colorful fallen leaves indicate the last days of autumn. Juniper trees form a background of green curtain. Boston ivy covers the walls of the studio, where the designer crafts new collections and meets clients. Shapiro planted Eugenia to secure the tall property-line hedges. An impenetrable perimeter of trees, hedges and foliage entirely obscures the house and landscape garden from the exterior. He also planted exceptional trees and shrubs, including Italian cypress, Ficus nitida, king and queen palms, fragrant Pittosporum, Schefflera actinophylla, Podocarpus henkelii (with its elegant slender leaves), as well as jacaranda, Norfolk pine and Rhapis excelsa (a dramatic fan palm). Shapiro’s pool house (just 20 feet wide) is an exact copy of the portico at Palladio’s Villa Chiericati outside Vicenza. He discovered the 16th-century architect’s original construction drawings in a book from his private library. Shapiro executed the plans in weather-resistant wood and then eroded and covered the surfaces with plaster, lime and varied pigments to simulate ancient stone and to give the portico and the entire scene an authentic antique appearance. He uses weather-faded furnishings that appear old and worn and well used. The pool

house is the perfect hideaway for festive apéritifs in the evening, as a bucolic setting for a quiet summer lunch, or even as the stage set for an early supper on a winter evening with the fire blazing and darkness settling over the trees. “I was steeped in post-war conceptual art for over 35 years, and as a working sculptor, I sensed that something other than mere landscaping was taking place,” he says. “It was at this juncture that I began to realize that for me, this entire exercise had very little to do with gardens. Somewhere along the way, I had forgotten that I was installing plants. Instead, I was in a dream state, creating art populated not only by individual sculptural forms but rather a fully integrated whole, with Buxus as the medium.” Shapiro says that his lifelong immersion in the world of art had taught him to see everything as art, or at least as the fodder for art. It’s silent here in his verdant domain. Undisturbed, he can work for hours, his artistic instincts and imagination taking over. For him, it’s sculpture, creation, expression. “My garden, it is now obvious, is my art project, endlessly captivating and inspiring,” he says. The primary objective—that of total creativity and isolation—has been achieved. Richard Shapiro’s Studiolo line of furniture is sold in showrooms around the country or at the Los Angeles studio by appointment, 310-275-6700; studiolo.com. •

Crawford is quick to admit the house, recently featured in Architectural Digest, isn’t the most practical, but the weather is “always awesome,” and she insists that’s not what the house was built for: “You could never live there full time, because it’s completely open, but because it’s a vacation house…it can be more of a fantasy.” It’s evident that much has changed since her days on the runway, but Crawford remains passionate about modeling. “I’m much more comfortable in front of a camera now than I was when I was 20…unfortunately, I might not look as good!” she laughs. “But in some ways, I feel I have more to offer.” Given her burgeoning miniempire, that statement doesn’t only apply to her modeling career. Nine years ago, Crawford started Meaningful Beauty, a skincare line, with a Parisian cosmetic surgeon she met through a friend, and she has been actively involved in each step of the business ever since. “I felt like it was my job as a model to take care of my skin,” she explains of her love for the project. She uses the day cream with SPF 20 religiously, and her fervor for protecting her skin has resonated with her children. “It’s second nature to them,” she says proudly, but hesitates when she reflects on her own skincare regimen. “I really stopped over-sunning myself early, after a bad sunburn…still, there was the 18 years before that where I was frying in our backyard in Illinois!” The other arm of her thriving brand is Cindy Crawford Home, a furniture collection that began as a collaboration with Rooms To Go, after her former Brentwood home was featured in Elle Decor. Refreshingly, Crawford views her business successes as shared entities: “I know what’s right for me and my brand,” she says confidently, but she credits the long-term loyal team she has built

around her. “We respect what each other knows… and we really divide and conquer.” Reinvention, it seems, comes quite naturally to Crawford, even though she still refers to herself as “old school.” She laughingly laments that her instinct at the photo shoot earlier in the day should have been to post on Instagram, as many of the young models do today, showing behindthe-scenes looks at fashion shows and their glamorous lives. “They have so many more opportunities for direct relationships with their fans through social media now,” she reflects thoughtfully. “The first time people got a glimpse of my personality was through MTV and ‘House of Style,’” the popular television show she hosted for six years in the early 1990s. Warm and surpris-

ingly funny, Crawford transformed the image of inaccessible supermodel and made herself seem approachable…even normal. This past year, Crawford made the familiar journey back to the “very normal, almost ‘Leave It to Beaver’ normal” Midwest. And while there, she brought her daughter, Kaia, to visit the Wisconsin hospital where Crawford is involved and where her younger brother, Jeff, was treated for leukemia before he died (he was four, and she was 10 years old). “My husband and I want to start a trust for our kids because they are old enough now to be included in our philanthropy,” she says. “Not money for them but money for them to give away. I want them to understand that when you are given a lot, a lot is expected of you, and how you give back.” •

HUMPHREY BOGART AND LAUREN BACALL WITH THEIR SON, STEPHEN, ON DECEMBER 24, 1951 Lauren Bacall was just 19 when she met Humphrey Bogart on the set of 1944’s To Have and Have Not. Bogie was married to his third wife at the time and 25 years Bacall’s senior, but he divorced and popped the question within a matter of months. “Baby,” as he called her, was born Betty Joan Perske to Jewish immigrants in New York City (she is in fact a first cousin to Shimon Peres, the current president and former prime minister of Israel). Bogie was very accepting of her religion, but Bacall concealed the fact she was Jewish publicly because she was frightened by the post-war anti-Semitism in Hollywood. And so, at home in Beverly Hills on Christmas eve, the couple pose with their young son, Stephen, in front of a tinsel-laden tree. PHOTOGRAPH BY SLIM AARONS
