was blessed with two little girls, and from the minute they were born
I started to dream about their wedding days. I am not sure why. It’s not that I want to rush a single minute of their childhood—I want to enjoy every second, from preschool to lemonade stands, dollhouses to Girl Scouts—yet I still dream about that day they walk down the aisle. As my own wedding was so many years ago, I guess it is the idea of planning
another one that sounds so wonderful. Maybe that’s what oftentimes gets these mothers of the bride so worked up—they seem to think it is their own wedding. It obviously comes from a good place, but they may need to be gently reminded whose day it really is.
C Weddings is full of everything you need to plan the perfect celebration.
From dresses to flowers, cakes to jewels, we report on all to keep you chic from start to finish. We also feature the best ceremonies up and down our Golden State and ask newlyweds the secrets to getting hitched. When it all comes down to it, weddings are meant to satisfy that “happily ever after” fantasy. After all the fairy tales and princess stories I have read to my girls over the years, I want that storybook ending for them and look forward to helping create it one day (even if that day is a few decades away!). In the meantime, a girl can dream… Enjoy this awe-inspiring issue, no matter if you are the bride-to-be, the mother

T
en years ago off the coast of Africa, Frank Klapp first met Christian Escario, a fellow professional sailor, surfer and globe-trotter. Escario went on to graduate from UC Santa Cruz and USC film school, had a career in finance, optioned and sold his first film (Inhale), flipped 13 properties in L.A. and now lives high in the Hollywood Hills. Meanwhile, Klapp returned to Tarifa, Spain, founded a clothing brand and opened seven stores, then three restaurants, started a family and launched the wildly successful events company Gypset around beautiful structures of his design and construction. “It evolved from surfing—you would build a shelter, then you’d do a better shelter, and you get better products. And with Frank being a perfectionist and an engineer, he’s mastered that art,” Escario says. Outgrowing the Spanish market, Klapp (along with his brother, Jorg, who is an integral voice in the design process) joined his old friend in California, and Gypset entered L.A.’s buzzing party scene in 2012.
A dome constructed for a wedding reception is open to the elements. LEFT Four 40-foot-tall cones of bamboo, steel and organic cotton at a Beverly Park affair.
“People here have beautiful outdoor spaces, then they close everything off with a tent and have a party in a box,” notes Escario, now the company’s co-owner. Gypset’s core principle revolves around the practice of using handmade structures and furnishings to enhance and incorporate natural surroundings. Designing and building prototypes on the company’s ranch in Malibu, they source one-of-a-kind items from a network of international artisans: rugs from Morocco; bamboo from Asia and South America; wool and hides from central Africa. Of the company’s work ethic, Escario explains, “Either we have creative control of the project or we don’t do it at all, no matter the price. We are not a rental company; we’re a full-service design company providing everything from security to catering.” They dream of one day building a hotel together and rolling out Gypset in Miami and the Hamptons—never straying too far from a surf break. gypsetevent.com. •

Stephanie Schur has a relaxed yet sophisticated way about her. Not surprisingly, she applies that same philosophy to flower arranging at Botany, her 4-year-old flower shop tucked inside the Brentwood Country Mart and now at a second location in Pasadena, next to Mohawk General Store and Escuela Tacqueria. The florist takes on 10 to 12 weddings each year, and in her opinion, “the bouquet should always reflect the personality of the bride. fter a bicoastal courtship, which involved several tours in New York and Los Angeles, Tony de la Rosa, a financial adviser at UBS, proposed to Jenny Barr, an account supervisor at RMO Whetherly, in the summer of 2012. The Beverly Hills couple, who met through mutual friends in Palm Springs, knew they wanted a big wedding with flexibility in scheduling and decided to marry at the bride’s bucolic family property in Greenwich, Connecticut, Stone’s Throw. Organizing the event from 3,000 miles away had its advantages. “I would go for walks in December and send pictures of flowers for color inspiration,” says Barr, adding, “You have
to go with your instincts. It also helps to have someone you can trust on the other side—in my case, my mom.” In the end, the celebration was a midsummer night’s dream filled with personality. The bride’s brother Nate, a Topangabased Emmy-nominated composer, wrote an original score for the ceremony before the fathers of the bride and groom set off a cannon to commence the festivities. The guests—all 365 of them—were escorted through the main house, past the Davidoff cigar and tequila bars (a nod to the groom’s Mexican heritage) to an 80-foot reception tent. And after hours of dancing, a late-night pool party ensued when several penguin suits decided to take a dip. •

eminine and unique, floral headpieces can really capture the personality of the bride. Whether they’re chic and subtle or oversize and colorful, it’s all up to her imagination— which is why they are so great,” says L.A.-based Parisian hairstylist Christophe Belkacemi. CROWNING TIPS • Once you’ve selected your dress, talk to your hairdresser and put him or her in contact with your florist to make sure it’s the right size and scale. • Keep in mind that certain flowers can wilt quickly out of water. Seek out blooms that are stronger and can survive the whole event. Or if you choose to go with a very delicate grouping, consider wearing it only for the ceremony and remove it for the reception (or vice versa). rab your girlfriends and head to Grand Cayman Island, or, as the locals say, “Cay-mon,” for a much-needed bachelorette weekend. Located just over an hour from Miami, it draws jet-setters, who come for its Caribbean splendor and stay for The Ritz-Carlton’s Silver Rain spa. Discreetly set behind a heavy, soundproof silver door, the La Prairie escape is a cool glacial palace where pampering is the priority and comfort is key. Attendants guide you past modern waterfalls into a cocoon-like waiting area to relax pre- and post-treatment. With plates of fresh fruits, carafes of juice, bottles of Champagne and professionals who swaddle you with blankets and hot neck cushions, it’s all about attention to detail. While treatment options vary, with names like Diamond Perfection (a head-to-toe polishing scrub) and Gifts from the Sea (which uses marine plants to indulge you from top-to-toe), a favorite is the new Skin Caviar Lifting Facial, which uses microcurrent technology to lift, contour and tone. It’s 90 minutes of pure luxury and begins with a back massage. The Ritz-Carlton Of course, you’ll also want to take advantage of all that beautiful blue water at your doorstep. Take a day trip Grand Cayman’s La Prairie Spa, to the famous “Stingray City” and mingle with wild animals in the open ocean. Prepare a picnic lunch and sail Silver Rain. to Starfish Point, where the shore is dotted with palm trees and covered with starfish. Water activities are also an INSET Beach option; snorkeling and scuba diving are world famous, and the hotel will easily arrange excursions. But if you and cabanas line the Caribbean your bridal party feel like doing absolutely nothing, simply request a beachfront cabana, order a cocktail and sink shorefront. your toes into the milky-white sand. A few days later, as you board the plane to return home, relaxed and blissfully happy, those pesky planning thoughts may not even faze you. In fact, chances are you’ll be thinking you’ve just found the perfect honeymoon locale. ritzcarlton.com. •

n addition to making sure that invitations have been sent out, floral arrangements are selected and every other design element exceeds expectations, the bride-to-be’s main concern undoubtedly remains her appearance. From glowing skin to a sculpted body, Katrina Hodgson and Karena Dawn, health coaches of Bravo’s new television show “Toned Up,” share their threemonth-long Bridal Edition program. “The number one tip we can provide is to prepare your meals ahead of time. Since you’ll be on the go during wedding planning, set yourself up to be healthy and energized with pre-packed meals and snacks,” explain the duo. Here, their countdown to the big day. 3 months Set your alarm at least four times a week to get your morning workout in. • Aim for 200 miles of walking, jogging, running, stair mill, elliptical, cycling or swimming by your wedding day (if cycling, divide your miles by three). • Cut fake sugar products from your diet. • Focus on nutrition and healthy carbs like sweet potatoes, quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat wraps and oatmeal. • Say goodbye to soda, flavored water and sugar-free coffee creamers. Instead, try coconut water and Sugar in the Raw. • Plan your meals, and don’t forget to eat! 2 months Continue working out four times a week, starting with 30 minutes of cardio and four toning sessions found in our Bridal Edition. • Stay hydrated! Drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day. • Keep a journal of what you’re eating. • Take healthy shots [recipes found on their site] like the Bridezilla Tamer, a concoction of celery and fresh cherries, and the Glowing Skin Shot, a mixture of carrot, ginger root and turmeric. 1 month Incorporate three cups of greens into your daily diet. This will help cleanse you and get your skin in tip-top shape. • Commit to your workouts and schedule them in advance as you would a cake-tasting appointment. • Replace one meal or two snacks a day with a spinach- or kale-enriched smoothie. • Drink tea to help cleanse your body, curb cravings and keep yourself from getting into sweets. 1 week Add lemon to your tea to burn extra fat. • Sweat for an hour each day, even if it means taking a long walk. • Keep all meals after 2 p.m. lean and green. “You may not remember all the details and planning, but you’ll always remember the way you felt on your wedding day, so make yourself a priority,” says the coaching team. toneitup.com. •

s wedding design duo Paige Appel and Kelly Harris of Bash, Please expand into interior projects, it’s no surprise their events of late exhibit a decidedly domestic point of view. For this al fresco wedding reception at Ojai Valley Inn & Spa’s Herb Garden, here’s how they created the look: “We brought wooden farm tables and set them in a ‘U’ around the edges of the Classic Party Rentals tent, then topped them with a bold, striped runner. L.A. florist Twig & Twine topped it with long garlands of
bay leaf, olive and mixed greenery with lush white garden and spray roses. Small Pixie tangerines (a nod to Ojai) were the only color present. We added vintage brass and sleek modern candlesticks with long ivory tapers. Casa de Perrin gold flatware and black hemstitch napkins, along with black die-cut place cards and letterpressed dinner menus with the couple’s monogram, completed the look. The effect was elegant—with the intimacy of a small dinner party.” bashplease.com. •

design NEW TRADITIONS
F
or Caroline Diani’s June 22 nuptials to actor Jeffrey Doornbos, the Santa Barbara boutique owner desired a day imbued with tradition and meaning. As for the remarkable ring Doornbos designed with Sylva Yepremian at Sylva & Cie: “Jeffrey and I were on a trip to Kenya, where I was born, and we found this 8-carat Ethiopian opal. I wouldn’t let him see the dress until I walked down the aisle, so he didn’t let me see the wedding band until he put it on my finger.” It was meaningful for loved ones to participate in the wedding’s stylish execution. Diani’s classmate from art and design school, Gail Bryson, created the crisp, elegant invitations. Family and friends sourced place settings around Newcastle, England— where Diani was raised—finding lace tablecloths, footed compotes and urns that would overflow with plum branches, dahlias and purple basil. Diani carried her late father’s childhood prayer book wrapped with her late mother’s rosary. Kim Curtis of Toast accented the heirlooms with lily of the valley—flowers her mom had planted in England. “This was by far the most special detail. I knew they were with me, blessing the marriage.” In addition to old-fashioned charms—a receiving line, an English fruitcake by Sweet Lady Jane—the couple celebrated the area with local vendors and locales, like the Spanish Colonial Revival El Presidio Chapel. SBB Gourmet Catering paired Margerum M5 with Santa Maria tri tip. In addition, they registered nearby at Upstairs at Pierre Lafond. “We live in a destination setting,” she adds, “so why go anywhere else?” dianiboutique.com. •

n planning her own May wedding to Dino Alfano, floral and event designer Kathleen Deery sought “relaxed glamour.” Colleague Laurie Arons helped with overall coordination, and Floreal arranged the tulips and greenery inside Grace Cathedral. For the Asian Art Museum reception, Deery thought big: nervy, hot-pink garden roses against gray bergères, French tulips in trumpet vases, and colossal tree peonies next to vintage Georg Jensen and sterling silver flatware. With a grin, she notes, “It was like ‘Downton Abbey’ 2013.” kathleendeerydesign.com.
ON THE ROCKS Florist Kelly Kaufman dips into turn-of-the-century seaside style at a Summerland estate affair. “We chose classic, neutral ivories, creams and whites,” says Kaufman. “Patience garden roses, sweet peas, ranunculus, fringed double tulips and white cherry blossoms were delicately tied with a pleated silk ribbon.” kellykaufman design.com. The arrangement was partly inspired by the Irish coast.

s L.A.’s weddings industry has proliferated over the past few years, Urban Palate owner/founder Geoffrey Bernstein has shifted his catering firm’s focus to hyper-customization—with what he calls “endearing small touches.” Menus are thorough and unique. Bramble Workshop-crafted risers are built with inserts for fabrics. Hedley & Bennett staff aprons change according to theme (e.g., Japanese denim for Asian spreads). UP has evolved with changing tastes, too. Now mainstream are yakitori stations and picnic baskets toting prosciutto and apricot mostarda ficelles. Veteran chef Jonathan Bailey (most recently with John Sedlar) remains flexible (“If someone wants their grandmother to teach us a recipe, we can do that”). Menu previews are held in a cool, creative tasting room—theirs located at the company’s headquarters, near the arts epicenter of Downtown L.A. Bramble Workshop has installed a dazzling wall of paint-dipped spoons, while images by photographer Autumn de Wilde hang near a vintage bar cart. Chic gray tableware by Heath Ceramics is paired with Commune Design linens. And the food? Try brandade on garlic toasts; scallion pozole; maple-wasabi chicken; and almond bombolini with bing cherry ice cream and chocolate rum syrup. “Everybody has a higher sensibility now,” Bernstein remarks. “Big corporate events are about feeding people. [At a wedding], it’s also about connecting with the bride and groom. We’re not taking that lightly.” urbanpalate.com. •

.A.-based couple Karly Kazarian, a wholesale manager for True Religion, and Peter Bonfante, a partner at boutique law firm Bonfante Steinbeck, knew they wanted a destination wedding but didn’t want to make their friends and family travel too far to partake in the festivities. Just one hour north of Cabo San Lucas in Todos Santos, the pair fell in love with the 15-acre Rancho Pescadero. They exchanged vows barefoot on the sand while a mariachi band filled the warm air with traditional Mexican music. After a jaw-dropping sunset graced the beachfront ceremony, the 70 guests gathered in the indoor/outdoor reception area. “The table settings were romantic and timeless, and the entire space was transformed into what felt like Old World Mexico, with iron candelabras and heaps of candles in all different sizes,” says Kazarian. Further incorporating the native influences, the pair worked with the resort’s culinary master, Chef Bueno, to create a menu that included roasted fish, rib-eye medallions and grilled vegetables from the property’s organic garden. The bride recalls, “Everything about our wedding was so personal and emotional, and Mother Nature pulled out all the stops that day.” ranchopescadero.com. •

’m from Los Angeles, so I was excited to show Tom the West Coast,” says photographer Rachel Chandler, who married stylist Tom Guinness (of the famed Irish brewery clan) in February 2012 at a family-only ceremony in L.A. The couple later celebrated with a shaman and a larger group of friends in the English countryside in March 2013 before returning to the Golden State for their honeymoon. Chandler, who shoots for Vogue and Dazed and Confused, hadn’t driven through California in years, so she consulted her friends and the concierge team at The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts for a curated itinerary. With their bags all packed, Guinness hopped in the passenger seat of the classic Ford Mustang at Chandler’s insistence, so that he could take it all in. The New York-based pair started from San Diego’s US Grant hotel, where Chef Chris Kurth took them on a moonlit lobster-diving trip. “I even got to drive the boat for a bit, dodging the sea lions,” says Chandler. After a stay at the SLS Beverly Hills, the couple’s friend Susan Feldman of One Kings Lane took them shopping for their new nest at Peter Dunham’s Hollywood At Home boutique. “Peter is an old family friend of Tom’s, and we had a laugh hearing stories about his elder siblings as children.” Driving through Big Sur, Guinness gazed at the towering Central Coast cliffs. “They reminded him of Cornwall,” says Chandler. At their friend Jacqui Getty’s recommendation, the couple broke for cocktails at S.F.’s Tosca and checked in to the Palace Hotel before heading on to Portland’s Powell’s Books and The Nines hotel. The pair returned to their home in New York after the weeklong whirlwind, but not without some souvenirs and cherished memories from their first coastal jaunt as husband and wife. starwoodhotels.com/luxury. •

ENCHANTED FOREST IN ONE OF BIG SUR’S ANCIENT REDWOOD GROVES, KEN FULK REALIZES THE FAIRY-TALE UNION OF TECH BARON SEAN PARKER TO CHANTEUSE ALEXANDRA LENAS BY KELSEY McKINNON
PHOTOGRAPHED BY CHRISTIAN OTH C 99
ean Parker has been behind some big ideas in his 33 years: Napster, Facebook and Spotify, to name a few. But nothing has captured the wild imagination of this ambitious visionary quite like his breathtaking wedding this past June in Big Sur. “Logistically, it was the craziest thing I’ve ever done,” says Ken Fulk, who was charged with all design aspects of the entrepreneur’s union to 24-year-old singer/songwriter and New Jersey native Alexandra Lenas. In the past, Sean had called on Fulk for a “unicornprom-themed” affair in S.F. and a wintry bash in Switzerland; this time, “their vision was of a Celtic-inspired wedding in a magical redwood forest under a canopy of flowers.” After storyboarding every detail of the affair, Fulk’s team set into action, converting a campground at the base of Big Sur’s Ventana Inn & Spa five months before the big day. Woodworkers created split-log benches and Celtic archways; 18-foot iron gates with the couple’s initials were welded by metalsmiths; a cobblestone bridge was pieced together by stonemasons; even a leather-bound book (Our Tale) was published for guests as a keepsake. Meanwhile, tailors were dispatched to measure costumes for the 364 attendees—all designed by Lord of the Rings costume designer, Ngila Dickson (outfitted in velvet robes and silk brocade vests and jackets were MTV founder Bob Pittman, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, Allison Williams, Emma Watson, Zynga’s Mark Pincus and Facebook cofounders Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes—Mark Zuckerberg sent his regrets). The weekend kicked off with the rehearsal dinner at a private ranch perched high above the Pacific. Kokkari, the bicoastal couple’s favorite restaurant in S.F., catered, with the help of Paula LeDuc (who would prepare the wedding feast), and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros performed. The following afternoon, surrounded by a cathedral of 500-year-old redwoods, Alexandra floated down the aisle in a hooded couture Elie Saab gown that was made in Paris. The couple (with their 5-month-old daughter, Winter) were married under the largest tree in the forest—around which Preston Bailey elegantly hung thousands of floral garlands to evoke the architecture of a ruined abbey. “It sounds cheesy, but you could burst into tears just looking at it. It was that beautiful,” Fulk recalls. After the bride and groom exchanged vows, guests were led into a verdant glade for a feast fit for a king. Upon descending from their sweetheart table (aka a 10-foot sofa-throne with candelabras and a bearskin run), Sean serenaded Alexandra with a song from The Little Mermaid before Sting took the stage. At the end of the night, the couple retreated to The Post Ranch Inn, where a brunch was held the next day. “I’ve been to a lot of parties,” says Fulk, “but this was truly the most magical thing I’ve witnessed in my entire life.” • VENUE Ventana Campground PLANNER Ken Fulk MENU Paula LeDuc Fine Catering, Kokkari CAKE Perfect Endings DRESS Elie Saab SUIT Ngila Dickson FLORIST Preston Bailey ENTERTAINMENT Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Sting STATIONERY Markatos Moore

etting married more than 7,000 miles from their Sydney, Australia, home was a way for fashion stylist Marina Didovich and photographer Steven Chee to make sure their wedding was intimate. “I didn’t want to be one of those brides who meet people for the first time at their wedding, and we didn’t want to have 300 people there,” says Marina. With just 80 guests in attendance at The Parker Palm Springs, Marina and Steven were the center of attention. They met in Fiji eight years ago when the two were working on separate photo shoots. Marina recalls making the first move. “I realized there was another team shooting at our hotel, so I went to introduce myself, which took Steven by surprise because crews usually tend to be standoffish.” Shortly after returning home to New Zealand, she traveled to Sydney to visit family but didn’t leave before she and Steven went on their first date. Marina later moved to Sydney to be with Steven, and the freelancing pair started working together about once a month. When it came time for Steven to propose, Marina had a slight suspicion that something was up. “He’s a workaholic, and when I found out he’d canceled a few jobs to go to New York City with me, I called my girlfriends and told them he was going to propose. I woke up on our last morning there and was so upset that nothing had happened, and I started to think I was going to have to reevaluate our relationship. Then he led me to Sheep’s Meadow in Central Park and asked me to marry him,” says the beaming bride. Having previously visited Palm Springs, where they worked on a shoot together, the couple decided to say “I do” at the Jonathan Adler-designed desert venue. “We stayed for a week and did everything at the hotel, including a dinner in the Gene Autry Villa the day after the wedding,” says Marina. In their true jet-setting fashion, Marina and Steven opted for another around-the-world jaunt for their honeymoon—New York for Christmas and Hawaii for New Year’s. •

A
ngelia De Meistre and Viktor Armand Hammer followed the cardinal rule of relationships: friends first, then something more. But when the 23-year-old first met her husband in Spanish class at Pepperdine University during the summer after their junior year, the former college tennis player was immediately struck by his presence. “People paid attention when he walked into a room,” she says. Angelia, an English and religion major, became language partners with the business major Viktor, and after a month, he asked her out on a quasi-date at the Jonathan Club in Santa Monica. They bonded over a shared love of reggae and beach living (the groom spent part of his childhood in the Cayman Islands), and Viktor invited Angelia to a reggae festival at the Hollywood Bowl. They quickly became inseparable, and less than a year later, on the summer solstice, he popped the question in Pepperdine’s picturesque Heroes Garden. “It’s a place with a lot of nostalgia for us,” says Angelia of the spot. “It’s where we went whenever we were stressed out.” Santa Barbara was a natural choice for the ceremony and reception—it’s Angelia’s hometown, and Viktor’s father lives there. Eschewing a planner, the bride and her mother organized the entire production, relying on their insider knowledge of local vendors and locations.
Angelia envisioned a wedding inspired by old Hollywood glamour. “I wanted it to be refined and elegant,” says the bride, who now lives back in town and works as an editor at Santa Barbara Magazine. “F. Scott Fitzgerald is my icon.” To that end, references to the auteur were apparent throughout the ceremony: Gin Rickeys; a super-restrained color palette—whites and blacks with only a few pops of brightness; bouquets in Champagnecolored Sahara roses; Art Deco fonts for place settings; a sexy yet simple St. Pucchi dress that hugged her silhouette. After a 1 p.m. full Mass at Old Mission Santa Barbara, guests headed to a family friend’s Montecito estate for a proper high tea, complete with Pimm’s, sandwiches and scones. The party then evolved into cocktails and a family-style dinner with open seating. The cake was a decadent mixture of dark chocolate, espresso and mocha, and the music included plenty of reggae. Nearly everything went off without a hitch, except their getaway car: Viktor’s father’s vintage 1961 Bentley broke down and stranded them in front of the mission without cell phones. “Right after the ceremony, we did a little lap to show everyone the car,” Angelia says, laughing. “Then we took our photographs at the mission. When we got back to the car, it wouldn’t start, and everyone had gone, even our photographer!” No matter. Otherwise, the day was perfect. •

The pair chose to exchange vows before 70 guests at the St. Regis Monarch Beach. “It’s an hour from where we live [Marina del Rey], so it felt like a destination wedding without the complexity of planning from afar.” The stunning design of the ceremony gazebo and reception dining room exceeded all expectations, but it was the bride’s siblings who stole the show. “They pretended to give me a toast, and it turned into the three of them serenading the room with some classic Backstreet Boys, a family joke, and for sure the funniest moment of the night. range County natives Stephanie Muth, 30, and Todd Watts, 31, both attended USC but did not cross paths until 2009. Over Christmas 2011, Todd, the now-senior managing director at Strathspey Crown, wrangled a key to Gramercy Park in N.Y. and took bended knee with a brilliant-cut sparkler he’d designed (complete with Champagne hidden in the tree). Dreaming up a wedding destination, Stephanie, an internal project manager for her family’s Orco Block & Hardscape, looked to her Colombian mother, Nancy. “I had forgotten how magical and romantic Cartagena was.” An actual “message in a bottle” served as a savethe-date; inside, a scroll unfurled to a watercolored sketch of the town she’d visited every year as a child. In February 2013, 120 loved ones from CA, N.Y., Medellín, Madrid and London were greeted in Cartagena with coconut lemonade and empanadas. After a fireworks-filled weekend in the walled city, Stephanie arrived by horse-drawn carriage to the Catholic ceremony on Sunday afternoon. “It was emotional being with my Papi as he escorted me to Todd,” she recalls. Her sister and matron of honor, Veronica— who, along with their mother, was integral to the planning—lent her “lucky” veil as something old. As the couple left the cathedral, dancers and drummers paraded the streets. At Sofitel Santa Clara, the newlyweds shared their first dance—plus a few salsa moves to honor her abuelita—to “Quiero Que te Quedes.” La Hora Loca approached at midnight, wherein costumed performers threw a conga celebration ablaze with confetti and percussion. F
or Pressed Juicery founder Carly Brien and Summerland (a farm delivery service) owner Alejandro de Castro, a rustic wedding at Carmel Valley’s Santa Lucia Preserve was the perfect way to celebrate the raw love between them. The couple met as third graders in Santa Monica and have an unusual shared history—including growing up in the same house (his family sold the house to hers) and the loss of a parent, an experience that solidified the bond they began building nearly 20 years ago. While decorating their Christmas tree and making homemade pasta with their son, Luca, now two and a half, Alejandro popped the question in their Santa Monica home. “I planned on proposing in New York, but the ring was done early, so I told Carly I had an early present for her,” he says. With the help of 23rd Street Jewelers, Alejandro designed the ring with a round brilliant diamond that had been passed down from Carly’s grandmother to her mother and reset it in a custom cushion setting. After spending time together traveling the Central Coast, they knew they wanted to share the natural beauty of Carmel with their friends and family. “It’s a magical, beautiful place, and it felt sacred to us,” says Carly. Under an outdoor cathedral-like canopy of redwood trees, the couple exchanged vows. On a field overlooking the preserve’s lush landscape, guests mingled over cocktails and wrote verses with a poet hired by the groom as a surprise for his bride. “I spent two hours on the phone with this woman writing a poem for Carly, and I knew she would love having her there,” says Alejandro. As dusk fell, the party continued in the property’s rustic barn, where a family-style dinner and dancing commenced. Bottles of a special Pressed Juicery “Hangover Remedy” were offered to guests as the evening drew to a close. •

t the start of a two-month work stint in London, Malibu native Jordan Foster, who works in fashion marketing, met Cheshire-born music and entertainment executive Tom Woodger at an office party (they worked in the same building). “Less than one week later, we were in love,” recalls the ebullient bride. When Jordan’s visa expired and she returned to the States, Tom realized he couldn’t lose her. On their oneyear anniversary, at her family home in Malibu, Tom held up a sparkler designed by the bride’s friend Hilary Tisch, which prompted an immediate, “Yes!” The N.Y.-based couple worked with JOWY Productions to secure a private estate in Bel Air to host 200 guests for the black-tie affair. Family plays a big role for the couple. “I was worried about having a head table that had space for everyone,” Jordan says of her growing clan, “Thankfully, we managed to find a setting that sat all 36 of us.” • VENUE Private estate, Bel Air CAKE The Butter End CATERING Serves You Right DRESS Monique Lhuillier TUX Flannels FLOWERS Eric Buterbaugh RENTALS Classic Party Rentals, Green Set RINGS Jennifer Meyer band, Hilary Tisch designed, E.Eichberg made engagement ring ENTERTAINMENT

PARTY PLANNER JULIA ESSER WEDS CHRISTOPHER LAKE ON A SUN-DRENCHED AFTERNOON AT HER FAMILY’S NAPA VALLEY WINERY BY KELSEY McKINNON PHOTOGRAPHED BY LAUREN ROSS
CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT Jim McElroy strikes up the recessional. Cones with dried flowers for the petal toss. Lights were strung over the pool and dance floor. The programs were printed on the back of found vintage wedding photos. Pomegranate branches arranged over the bar. Most of the guests, including flower girls, went barefoot. His-andhers custom rings. Julia and Christopher. Julia designed the stationery suite. Parasols were distributed during the late-afternoon meal.
ulia Esser had moved to Paris and was working for International Living when she received an Evite from a friend. A witty group response prompted an email from N.Y.-based Christopher Lake. “Essentially we were pen pals until we met in Union Square three months later. I came to NYC for one week to meet him and just never took my return flight back.” Christopher, who works for the startup VHX, and Julia, a professional party planner (Julia Lake Parties!), settled in Brooklyn, and it wasn’t long before Lake popped the question. “Chris took me up to our rooftop and gave me this weird flashlight. As I turned it on, I saw this elaborate mural on the wall that read: ‘Will you marry me?’ in UV luminescent invisible paint.” The intimate wedding at Julia’s family winery (and childhood home)—a sprawling estate in St. Helena dotted with fruit trees, lavender gardens and acres of vines—was her time to shine. “Because I throw parties for a profession, my wedding day was
like my tour de force,” says Julia. “People always tell you not to get lost in the details, but I ignored them and put all my focus into the details.” After save-the-dates were printed on Esser wine bottles and shipped out, she carefully selected pieces of family silver, antique china and old European linens. The invitations were screen-printed on vintage handkerchiefs. Julia arranged white, pink and green bouquets, centerpieces and flower crowns in the days leading up to the outdoor affair. The 50 guests were instructed to wear white to add to the ethereal feel. For the ceremony, Julia and Christopher walked from the house together to complete a circle with loved ones who found seats on hay bales covered with linens. The couple then led the recessional back to the porch, where they celebrated with Champagne and oysters from Tomales Bay before a seated dinner around the pool. “It ended up looking like an outdoor garden party in a scene from ‘Downton Abbey.’” A masterpiece classic, indeed. •

It was a classic all-American fairy tale: Baseball legend wins the heart of Hollywood’s hottest young star. Their first date was at Villa Nova, an Italian restaurant that is now The Rainbow Bar & Grill on L.A.’s Sunset Boulevard. Monroe, hesitant about dating an athlete, was two hours late, but the pair hit it off. On New Years Eve two years later, the couple were in the Bay Area visiting DiMaggio’s family when he proposed. They married at the San Francisco courthouse 14 days later.
