FACES OF THE FALLEN The Regimental Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers at Caernarfon Castle planned and delivered a comprehensive programme of events to commemorate the centenary of the Regiment’s service during the First World War, including Faces of the Fallen and Bring Them Home. One of the projects to honour the men who died was Faces of the Fallen, which created a database with profiles of as many of the men as possible. The database began as a photographic commemoration. The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum posted photographs of the men who died in foreign fields exactly 100 years to the day that they fell as the conflict unfolded over the four-year period. From this, the museum built up a portfolio of information on each person, creating a personal profile of the men behind the statistics. The figures are stark. By the end of the war, over 11,000 men in the regiment had given their lives. With the financial support of Cymru’n Cofio Wales Remembers 1914-1918, a searchable database was created by the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum for its website, as a free research resource for anyone to use. The Trustees are hugely indebted to a small group of dedicated volunteers who made this fitting tribute possible. This has created a personal and fitting legacy, and currently has over 2,530 photographs and profiles of fallen Royal Welchman. ‘ We believe we are bringing these Royal Welchmen back to the spiritual home of the Royal Welch Fusiliers.’ Museum Trustee ‘ This is an awesome idea and so fitting.
