STATE OF THE ART MUSIC FESTIVAL South Hedland will be coming alive on Monday 3 June as part of the State of the Art Music Festivals being held across the state in celebration of the WA Day long weekend. Having sold tens of thousands of records and toured most parts of Australia, the Kimberley’s Fitzroy Xpress have established themselves as one of WA’s most celebrated Indigenous bands. Supporting entertainment will come from folk facilitator Delany Delaney, indie pop/rocker and Hedland resident Hawk Brooklyn, and The Hood – a young indigenous breakdance troupe which focuses on community development and building confidence and capacity for active citizenship. JUNE FLICKS IN THE SQUARE The June Flicks in the Square will be a special one, with not one, but two ‘flicks’ being shown! Earlier this year, WA young film maker Mat De Koning, joined MC Optamus on a number of visits to Port Hedland as part of the JD Hardie Youth Zone music recording studio launch, and Portbound. During his time in Port Hedland, Mat De Koning shot some footage of the music writing and recording sessions, as well as footage from a range of community events. The final product is a documentary about young people in Port Hedland, and it will debut at this ‘Flicks in the Square’ event. Local hip-hop group L4TM play a starring role in this documentary, as the group were heavily involved with the music workshops, creating their first hip-hop music recording and video clip as well as performing their song live alongside MC Optamus at Portbound. This is an exciting milestone for L4TM, and for all young people in Port Hedland, as it showcases the wealth of hidden talent in the Town and promotes the potential opportunities for use of the state of the art music recording equipment at the JDYz. The event will start with documentary screening at 6:30pm and feature film at 7pm. ‘Flicks in the Square’ is a family friendly event which is proudly supported by Town of Port Hedland, BHP Billiton Iron Ore and LandCorp. PORT HEDLAND COURTHOUSE GALLERY EXHIBITION OPENING You and your family and friends are invited to celebrate the opening of the latest exhibitions at the Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery featuring West Australian artist Hayley Welsh. Hayley Welsh started her illustration career in London, where she began drawing illustrations for national newspapers; however Hayley is now best known for her successful children’s pop-up book ‘This Way Up’, published by Hodder’s Children’s Books. Hayley established herself as one of the newest creatives in the Western Australian art scene, having made the move to Australia from the UK in 2009. She previously exhibited in London and New York, won the Hedland Art Award for Best Artist Under 25 Years in 2010 and is quickly becoming recognised for her surreal, wide-eyed illustrations. Using found objects as her canvas, Hayley illustrates imaginative new worlds with her whimsical characters, exploring the child like escapism into fantasy and the process of opening up one’s mind to impossible realities. This exhibition will be complemented by a series of jewellery pieces by Jimmy Poland and Helena Bogucki. Jimmy’s stories and jewellery making are a part of our Indigenous cultural history and traditions, which in turn promotes education, understanding and respect. They are all a unique piece of this spirit country that represents the landscape he grew up in – Gutharraguda (Shark Bay). The exhibition is the outcome of a mentorship development program with leading WA jeweller and designer, Helena Bogucki. Helena 17

is an independent designer representative of the unique contemporary Western Australian jewellery scene. This unique artistic development has allowed Jimmy to tell his stories of place, articulating his cultural identity, whilst providing an opportunity for both a nonIndigenous and Indigenous audiences to gain an insight into life in Shark Bay through the lens of an 86 year old Malgana elder.
