‘GRAVITY’ Academy Award winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in “Gravity,” a heartpounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiralling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. When: Time: Where: Map: Cost: Rated: Genre: Info:

'SERVICE INTEGRATION' pango WORKSHOP As part of our reform support project, PANGO is delivering a half day session on “Service Integration”. This will be facilitated by Professor Paul Flatau, Director of the UWA Business School Centre for Social Impact. The integration of services involves ‘joint working’ in one form or another and this can range from loose collaborative arrangements around referral of clients and good communication between staff in different organisations to coordinated delivery of services and full integration where the resources of different organisational units are pooled in order to create a new organisation. This workshop will investigate Service Integration
as a way of achieving improved collaboration and partnership. In particular, the workshop will look at what we mean by service integration, provide a policy context, look at integration from a client’s perspective and discuss what works and what doesn’t in terms of service integration. When: Friday 8 November Time: 9am to 12pm Where: South Hedland Lotteries House, Leake Street, South Hedland Map: #36 Cost: Free Info: Please contact Karen Armstrong on 0408 695 840 or email manager@pango.net.au

BOOK CLUB The book club offers a great variety of books for all reading tastes which have been selected to prompt lively book discussions. The title for November is ‘Alias Grace’ by Margaret Atwood, a novel based on a real double murder that occurred in Toronto in the 1850s. Grace Marks was a 15 year-old servant in household of Mr. Kinnear. He and his mistress Nancy, also a servant, were found dead in the cellar. Grace and the stable-hand James McDermott had gone missing and shortly afterward were found just over the border in the U.S. with Kinnear’s and Nancy’s belongings. They were apprehended and returned to Toronto 11
for trial, which resulted in both being found guilty. McDermott was hanged, and Grace was sentenced to death but had her sentence reduced to life in prison. Atwood imagines Grace’s history and what might have really happened. Based around the true story of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the 1840s, Margaret Atwood has created an extraordinarily potent tale of sexuality, cruelty and mystery. QiGong Classes
Port Hedland Taekwondo
Every Monday and Wednesday at 6pm and, Elisi Therapies offers Qi Gong Classes. Qi Gong (chee kung) is an ancient Chinese form of exercise. It is very gentle yet extremely powerful. A QiGong class at Elisi Therapies is easy to follow with the emphasis on relaxing into the moves rather than concentrating on correct technique. It is also a great way to start to regain fitness if you’ve been inactive for some time.
Port Hedland Taekwondo Club’s head instructor, 6th Dan Master John Geeves, offers students a safe and friendly environment where they can develop confidence, discipline, respect for self and others, coordination and fitness. Taekwondo is the oldest known martial art in the world and its origins can be traced back to more than 2000 years of Korean history. An integral part of John’s Taekwondo syllabus includes self-defence which is based on Hapkido principles. These principles work using minimal force, to overcome a stronger opponent, therefore great strength is not required, which is why these classes are ideally suited for women and children. Classes have structure and students need no previous martial arts experience. The Club welcomes families and encourages parents to train alongside their children. Private tuition is also available. Join us every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4.30pm to 5.30pm for the beginners and from 5.30pm to 7pm for the Seniors at the Hedland Senior High School gymnasium on Roberts Street in South Hedland. gym group Clients of the Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service are invited to join our Gym Program. Starting Monday 21st October 2013 at 12:00 midday for one hour and running every Monday and Thursday thereafter until Thursday 5th December, we offer a range of exercises including cross-fit, boxing and exercises in the South Hedland Aquatic Centre. Increasing physical exercise has been identified as beneficial to assisting people in their recovery from mental illness. This program aims to promote healthy lifestyle choices and routines for the consumers of mental health services. The gym sessions will assist with the development of skills, confidence and routines, and the gym memberships will promote ongoing health improvements for these consumers. If you are not into group fitness, then we can arrange
personal training sessions to develop a fitness plan and become familiar with the equipment, and give you more confidence to attend the gym independently. If you would like to attend with a carer, then ask your case manager about ARAFMI or accessing a Companion Card. For more information, please contact Alex Craig from Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service on 08 9174 1240 or Deb Graham from Southern Cross Care 9140 2306

HARM REDUCTION THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITIES As a way of reducing harm Bloodwood Tree Association has come up with practical strategies intended to reduce the negative consequences of high risk behaviours such as over drinking alcohol or drug use. This is a non-judgemental approach and Bloodwood Tree Association’s counsellors are attempting to meet people where they are at with their drinking and drug use. Instead of total abstinence the counsellors support the individuals to minimise the harms caused by drug and alcohol abuse by providing a variety of activities like cooking, artwork, music and dance, watching DVD, storytelling, gardening and sometimes just yarning in a friendly environment and each activity is concluded by a healthy meal. Sessions are held every Wednesday morning from 8am to 12pm at WAPA MAYA Centre, 14 Forrest Circle in South Hedland. For more information about this program please contact Salome Mbenjele on 9138 0300 or email salome.mbenjele@bloodwoodtree.org.au
