AFRICAN SAFARI QUIZ NIGHT AND SILENT AUCTION Port Hedland Soroptimist International Association will be hosting a fundraiser quiz night with an ‘African Safari’ theme and silent auction on Saturday 5 October at the Wanangkura Stadium. Proceeds raised on the night will go to the Galmi Hopsital in Niger in West Africa, for their maternity ward and obstetric unit. Local GP obstetrician, Dr Anne-Sophie Rowcroft, will be moving there in January 2014. Dr Rowcroft has been an integral part of the medical team at Hedland Health Campus since 2010. In 2012, Dr Rowcroft visited Niger to gain further skills in women’s health and at this time discovered the huge need for doctors in this country which has only one medical doctor per 50 000 people. In 2012 ‘Save the Children’ fund declared Niger the worst place in the world to be a mother. The lifetime risk of maternal death in Niger is 1 in 16. The life expectancy for these women is 53 years. The hospital urgently needs more obstetric specialists. By joining the Galmi medical team as a GP obstetrician, Dr Rowcroft will help provide essential care for mothers and babies and train local Nigerien staff to improve health outcomes for these most vulnerable patients. Come on down and help raise money for this valuable cause. Tickets are available online at http://www.stickytickets.com.au/13228 or can be purchased from Port Hedland Visitor Centre (Wedge Street) and Jaxon Construction (1 Mitchie Crescent, South Hedland) – cash only. BOOK CLUB The book club offers a great variety of books for all reading tastes which have been selected to prompt lively book discussions. The title for October is ’44 Scotland Street’ by Alexander McCall Smith. Welcome to 44 Scotland Street, home to some of Edinburgh’s most colourful characters. There’s Pat, a twenty-year-old who has recently moved into a flat with Bruce, an athletic young man with a keen awareness of his own appearance. Their neighbour, Domenica, is an eccentric and insightful widow. In the flat below are Irene and her appealing son Bertie, who is the victim of his mother’s desire for him to learn the saxophone and Italian –all at the tender age of five. Love triangles, a lost painting, intriguing new friends, and an encounter with a famous Scottish crime writer are just a few of the ingredients that add to this delightful and witty portrait of Edinburgh society. Clever, elegant and funny, this is a novel that provides huge entertainment but which is underpinned by the moral dilemmas of everyday life and the characters’ struggles to resolve them. This month the book club will meet at the Empire Bar, at the Esplanade Hotel. When: Time: Where: Map: Cost: Info: 9

WEST END MOVIES FEATURING ‘CARAMEL’ In Beirut, five women meet regularly in a beauty salon, a colourful and sensual microcosm of the city where several generations come into contact, talk and confide in each other. Over the course of their day it becomes readily apparent that women are truly the same everywhere, regardless of the society they live in. While single Layale struggles with 10

her growing attraction to a married man, Muslim bride-to-be Nisrine fears that her husband will find out that she has already lost her virginity, and Rima wages a futile war against her lesbian instincts. In the salon, their intimate and liberated conversations revolve around men, sex and motherhood, between haircuts and sugar waxing with caramel. This ‘Chef d’oeuvre’ by Nadine Labaki is both an astute cultural study, and a charming comedic drama with a friendly and inviting atmosphere. This event is proudly presented by Town of Port Hedland. 'SCENT TALES' live SHOW Would you pay for the smell of fresh baked bread, or is it priceless? Enter the world created by debuting company Little y Theatre Company, a playful hyper-reality which will stimulate your senses in magical ways. Inspired by a Nasruddin Hodja story, Scent Tales is a delicious-smelling story of coming to one’s senses. Sibling rivalry is at the heart of this delightful, bitter sweet story about a jealous baker and her more fortunate sister. An eccentric, dry-witted narrator weaves a tale about baker Bea’s deep seated jealousy of the nomadic Sanji, which results in an incredible accusation. Will the recipe for Love Bread bring Bea to her senses? Be enchanted by the puppetry and poetry, delighted by the baked goods, and seduced by the Love Bread. Little y Theatre Company cleverly combine scent and memory in this sweetly charming tale, taking advantage of the close links between smell and emotional memory to create a whimsical theatrical delight. PICNIC IN THE PARK TURTLE MONITORING PROGRAM LAUNCH Turtle time is fast approaching and the Care for Hedland Environmental Association wants YOU to help out and be part of an experience that sets Hedland apart. Port Hedland is an internationallysignificant area for the Flatback turtle (Natator depressus), a threatened species that is one of only eight types of marine turtles worldwide that can grow up to one metre long and weigh over 100 kilograms! Flatback turtles’ rookeries (nesting places) are located in a small number of places in the world including Port Hedland’s Cemetery Beach and Pretty Pool Beach. The Care For Hedland’s turtle monitoring program is unique as it relies overwhelmingly on volunteers from the community to become Turtle Trackers. Volunteers collect information on the numbers of turtles nesting and incidents of predators disturbing nests, provide information and guidance to the public and help out with ‘turtle rescues’.

The Aboriginal Family Law Services are hosting a family picnic at the Marquee Park Splash & Play in South Hedland this Thursday in collaboration with Children’s and Local Community Services. Taekwondo is the oldest known martial art in the world and its origins can be 27

traced back to more than 2000 years of Korean history. An integral part of John’s Taekwondo syllabus includes self-defence which is based on Hapkido principles. Classes have structure and students need no previous martial arts experience. The Club welcomes families and encourages parents to train alongside their children. Private tuition is also available.
