Celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, consumers spent $5.5 billion on the event day last year and organizers expect this year to be an even bigger success. According to Small Business Saturday spokesperson Patricia Norins there’s a “tremendous amount of momentum” for the this year’s event with more businesses participating and an increased number of community organized events. Not surprisingly, Main Street communities are among those seizing upon the opportunity to promote

This Saturday, independent shop owners across Weakley County will be looking for a bump in sales from consumers who support the retailers rooted in our communities. Support from those who live and give local can produce an economic ripple effect: Tennessee’s “small batch” and artisan food makers often depend on other small businesses to sell their products to the public. • Consumers are asked to think of three businesses they would miss if they disappeared, then return to them, with a reminder that those transactions are what keeps the doors open. • The number 50 ties to the fact that if just half the employed U.S. population dedicated $50 of their current monthly spending to locally owned independent businesses, more than $42.6 billion of revenue would be generated annually. • The 3/50 Project message then explains that for every $100 spent in local, independent brick and mortar businesses, more than $68 returns to the local economy; when spent in a big box or chain, the amount drops to only $43. Spend it online, and unless you live in exactly the same community as the etailer, nothing comes home.

Star Wars Enthusiasts Wacky trivia await readers of “Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know,” from who cleans the floors of the Death Stars and what takes 1,000 years to digest its victims. From movie-making trivia to quirky facts you never knew, this guide will excite new and old fans alike

Super Hero Fans For the most comprehensive single volume published on the subject, “Marvel’s The Avengers Encyclopedia,” details the genesis of the team and explores the powers of more than 250 characters and 40 teams and lineups, including fan-favorites such as Captain America and Black Widow. Packed with fantastic comic book art, this title is a must-have guide to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Budding Creators Unlock the secrets of LEGO building in this allnew book based off the popular LEGO Ideas series. “LEGO Awesome Ideas” shows fans how to create their own world with LEGO bricks by providing step-by-step visual breakdowns of new models and offering alternative ways to build them, brick by brick. Discovery Park announces December events schedule
LET IT GLOW — Morgan Hilton, Discovery Park Grounds employee, hangs lights to get ready for the “Let it Glow Light Show,” opening Dec. 1 at DPA in Union City. The lighted drive through will feature a 60-foot tunnel of dancing lights.
Topping the list of unique holiday activities at Discovery Park of America is the “Let it Glow Light Show,” which opens at 5:00 p.m. Dec. 1. According to Jim Rippy, CEO, the Discovery Park team wanted to offer something to people in this area that is unique, something that they haven’t been able to do around here. After many meetings and plans, the group decided to have a lighted drivethrough exhibit. “There’s not much that gets people in the holiday spirit more than Christmas lights, so we are lighting things up at Discovery Park,” Rippy said. Grounds Director, John Watkins, has headed up the effort, but he said about 20 – 30 Discovery Park employees have been involved in one way or another.

The light exhibit will open on Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. and will be open each evening that the park is open from 5 until 9 p.m. throughout the month of December. The park is closed on Mondays, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so the drive through will be closed on those days as well. According to Watkins, there are over 380 thousand lights, over 24 miles if you stretched them all out. “This year, it is all about lights,” Watkins said. There is no animation in this year’s show, but each
year it will get bigger and better, according to Watkins. There is also a “live nativity” with community churches setting the scene. Various area churches will be participating with this event nightly in December. The cost to drive through the light show is $5 per car, $10 for a 15 passenger or less van and if a group arrives in a larger bus, Discovery Park will provide transportation at $1 per person, due to height limitations. The access road is almost a mile long, so we
expect it to take about ten minutes to drive through, with one of the highlights being a 60-foot drive through tunnel of dancing lights. “We hope everyone will come out enjoy this amazing light show,” Rippy said. Other December activities include “Photos with Santa” each Saturday from noon until 5:00. According to park officials, everyone is invited to bring a camera and snap a photo with Santa, who will be located See Page 9

Shop in Martin
By BRAD THOMPSON It is hard to believe it is that time of year again. Christmas is upon us. It is time to start making lists, planning parties, and preparing for gatherings — all of which require shopping. Let me encourage you, as you make your plans and purchases, to shop in Martin. You hear that each year, but our local businesses rely on you and me to keep their doors open. And, we all rely on local business too, for revenues, community building, jobs, leadership, etc. Let us all appreciate what we have and focus on what we can do in making local business more successful. Throughout Martin we have businesses that are locally owned and provide unique services and nov-
elties. I am proud of our hometown businesses and encourage everyone to support local businesses this holiday season, and yearround, as local businesses are the pulse of Martin. There is a trickle down effect of healthy retail in a community. Thriving businesses create community well-being by sustaining lively downtowns, connecting residents through fostering economic and social relationships, and contributing to local causes — all of which build community development. Supporting local business keeps dollars recycled in our own community, helps create jobs, and even helps the environment through less automobile travel. I am proud of our many locally owned businesses

here in Martin. We are blessed with a vibrant, beautiful downtown, as well as a variety of locally owned businesses citywide. Let’s keep a good thing going and show our support as a community by participating in the many Christmas holiday events and activities. “Like” the City of Martin on Facebook, and download the Martin Business Association app to find out about community events, Martin businesses, and special savings this holiday season. And remember, Shop Martin First. Brad Thompson is the director of community development for the City of Martin. Scan the QR code to the right to download the Martin Business Association app.
SNOWY DAYS — In the coming weeks, the City of Martin will be transformed into a holiday wonderland. In additional to Santa’s Village and the annual Kiwanis Christmas parade, the city’s businesses and shops are offering great deals for all your holiday shopping needs. The only thing missing – for now, at least – is the snow, which last year blanketed the C.E. Weldon Public Library (above) in Historic Downtown Martin.

Plaid Friday unites small businesses The name Plaid Friday was conceived from the idea of weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the fun and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday,” and is designed promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays. From its inception, Weakley County has always been dependent on and supported by small businesses. It was the local saw mills that first made it possible for homes and buildings to be built. Local grocers first pro-
vided food to Weakley County families and local textile manufacturers and businesses first provided employment and clothing to the citizens of our area. Local businesses continue to provide support to their communities that can only be provided by people invested in the succcess of not just their own business, but the overall local economy. The concept of Plaid Friday was conceptual-
ized in Oakland, California, a city known for strong shop local campaigns. The movement has since expanded to many other economies throughout the country. Plaid Friday strives to bring back the days when shopping for friends and family during the holidays was a pleasurable and leisurely activity. Help us celebrate by wearing plaid while shopping at participating businesses on Friday, Nov. 27. Look for the special plaid placards at your local shops. Many of these businesses are offering specials during Plaid Friday. Help celebrate the diversity and creativity of independent businesses.

Black Friday shopping strategy: Buy the stuff others overlook
(BPT) - The promise of Black Friday deals can look downright amazing — who wouldn’t want to buy a 50inch flatscreen TV for $150? But the competition to score deals on big-ticket items can be fierce and frustrating. You can be the third person in line when the doors open on Friday morning only to discover you’re still too late because the store had just two TVs in stock at that price. Most people who head to the stores on Black Friday are looking for the same thing. A survey by fatwallet.com found the top three things people will shop for are clothing (42 percent), electronics (34 percent) and toys (30 percent). Instead of feeling the burn over deals that fizzle, or the frustration of fighting your way through crowds of people circling the biggest discounted items, why not shop smarter on Black Friday? Buy necessary holiday items other people overlook on the biggest retail day of the year, such as furniture, holiday decor or gourmet foods. Retailers consistently offer a wide selection and competitive pricing on such items, so you’ll have no problem finding what you want while others are competing for a handful of “deals.” Here are some ideas of smart items to shop for on Black Friday: • Food staples and snacks — You have to feed holiday guests, and Black Friday can be a great time to score deals on a variety of fare. Look for gourmet coffee, imported cheeses and crackers, baking ingredients, spices, condiments, candy and more everything you need to field a festive feast for holiday celebrations. • A new mattress — In-
stead of fighting the crowds for big-ticket electronics, why not put your money and efforts toward making the guestroom more welcoming? When grandma visits for Christmas, she can sleep on a new mattress. Big Lots offers great prices on mattresses year-round. • Holiday decor items — While others are duking it out in the local toy store over the season’s hottest toy item, why not turn your attention to decorations? Black Friday is a great time to stock up on holiday decor. If you wait until closer to the big day to purchase decorations, you may find a dwindling stock and prices driven up by higher demand. • Pet supplies — Fido and fluffy deserve to share in the festivities. Since you would be shopping for pet supplies like treats, toys, food and sweaters for them anyway, why not do it on a day when everyone else has turned their attention elsewhere? Big Lots carries pet beds,
food, toys, leashes and collars, attire, treats and more at great prices all year round. • Items for the home — It’s the little touches that your holiday guests will appreciate, so Black Friday is a great day to purchase items for the home, such as new bedsheets for the guest room and towels for the guest bath. A brightly patterned table cloth, new dinnerware and flatware can add some flare to holiday meals. • Simple yet heart-warming gifts — Everyone’s holiday shopping list always has some acquaintances and co-workers who don’t need a big-ticket gift from you. While others are competing for the pricey, show stuff on sale, you can find simple yet heart-warming gifts for your babysitter, housekeeper, your child’s teacher or a colleague. Bath sets, grooming sets, gourmet food and coffee and cosmetic kits all make welcome gifts, and it won’t cost you a lot to give a holiday greeting.

How to make tech gifts more meaningful
(StatePoint) Technology gifts continue to dominate holiday wish lists. Before purchasing the latest gadget, remember that one size doesn’t fit all. Just as you wouldn’t buy the same sweater for everyone, different recipients have different needs when it comes to tech gifts. This season, consider technology gifts that can improve your loved ones’ daily lives by matching devices to their personal interests. Here are some ideas for thoughtful holiday tech gifts for everyone on your list. The Go-Getter Purchasing a gift for a busy parent, a world traveler or a social butterfly? Wearable technology will definitely be at the top of their lists this season. Fitness fanatics will love souped-up Bluetooth headsets and activity trackers; while on-the-go moms will be grateful for the ease a smart watch provides them. Do your homework to ensure whichever gift you pick is compatible with the recipient’s existing technology. If your loved one is an Apple fanatic, you don’t want to get an Android smartwatch. Add extra personalization by taking into account product design. For example, several jewelry designers have introduced necklaces and bracelets that cleverly house sports activity trackers inside the accessory. The Home Office Worker Entrepreneurism is on the rise and that means home offices are becoming a staple. The key to working from home is staying organized, maximizing space and minimizing clutter. Many entrepreneurs
and telecommuters don’t realize that their phones can actually help them streamline their home office experience. These days, you can link your mobile phone calls to your home phone to maximize efficiency. For example, with the Panasonic KX-TGF382M Link2Cell Digital Phone, you can link up to two smartphones to make and receive calls, as well as receive talking ID alerts so you never miss texts. Added benefit? This product helps increase efficiency. A downloadable Android App provides alerts when the linked cell phone receives emails and social media updates. A busy entrepreneur can block up to 250 unwanted numbers with the touch of
one button, cutting down on time-sapping conversations. Additionally, a powerful battery backup
system will keep the phone connected for up to seven hours even if the power goes out. More information
is available at www.amazon.com. The Entertainer Gift lists always include
a friend or family member that loves to entertain guests. Home chefs who like to throw dinner parties will surely appreciate a wireless Bluetooth cooking thermometer that syncs with a smartphone to alert them when their main dish is done, or a digital measuring cup, that enables cooks to precisely measure liquids and easily convert measurement units. Wine aficionados can also go high tech this season. New gifts include sonic decanters, smart chillers, and even special devices that allow you to pour wine without uncorking it to preserve freshness. This holiday season don’t just go high-tech with your gifts, go highly-personalized too

Best holiday gift for seniors? Teach them how to use tech to stay connected
(BPT) - If you’re thinking of buying Grandma her first ever smartphone or tablet for the holidays, but aren’t sure she’ll be able to handle the technology ... make that purchase! Studies show technology can lead to the deeper levels of social engagement associated with improved mental and physical wellbeing in older adults. But there’s a catch - you need to help Grandma learn how to use that mobile device in order for her to reap the full benefits of social technology. Ample research shows social interactions are good for older people, yet more than a third of Americans older than 80 don’t use technology for social networking, a study by Brookdale and the Stanford Center on Longevity found. Sixty-three percent of seniors do use technology to stay connected to loved ones. Seventy percent who use technology, such as cell phones and computers to stay connected, say it improves their communications with loved ones. And those who do use technology say they feel happier, more satisfied and their health is better, the study found; 85 percent said they were satisfied with life, and 72 percent said they were in good or excellent health. “Feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of new technology was the top reason older people said they didn’t try new technologies,” O’Neil says. “Fortunately, that’s a fairly easy fix. All that’s really required is some assistance from more tech-savvy younger loved ones to help seniors learn how to use new technologies to enrich their social and intellectual lives.” Here are some tips to help seniors overcome barriers to technology use:
* If you’re buying technology for an older loved one, remember simple is better and less is more. Forty-one percent of older people polled in the Brookdale study said new technology is too complicated. If you want Grandma to be able to make calls, text and access her Facebook account, she probably doesn’t need a smartphone with all the other bells and whistles. Look for a device that does only what she needs and not much more. * Look for devices that are larger, with screens that will be easier to see, such
as a tablet versus a smartphone, or a laptop with a larger screen. * Assist with setup of the device. Increase the on-screen font size and use bold to help older eyes more easily see text on small device screens. * Screen colors can affect readability, so pay attention to the color of the font and background. Avoid pastels and light colors that are difficult to see. Adjust the device’s background theme to be minimally distracting. * Help your older loved one create user names and passwords, and write them
all down to be stored in a secure location. Be sure to address security settings on social media accounts. Limit who can contact your loved one through social media, and make sure your older loved ones understand why they must never accept online invitations or interactions from people they don’t know in person. * Show your loved one how to use email and text messaging, attach or open
photos. Again, stress the importance of never opening an attachment in an email from someone they don’t know. * For seniors with dexterity challenges, a separate, larger keyboard can make device use much easier. Or, consider showing your loved one how to use voiceto-text applications so typing is unnecessary. * Load some fun brain games onto the device to
help stimulate your older loved one’s mind. “Technology can be a wonderful way to enrich older people’s lives, allowing them to stay connected with loved ones regardless of distance and mobility,” O’Neil says. “Helping your older loved one learn how to connect with their loved ones via technology can be a wonderful holiday gift that will benefit them all year long!”

(StatePoint) For many holiday shoppers, Black Friday marks the official kickoff to the gift-buying season. But the following day, November 28, is Small Business Saturday, and can be a more satisfying way to shop for gifts for loved ones. At a time of year where big box retailers offer deep discounts, this annual opportunity to show local businesses your support is also a great way to score unique items while benefitting the local economy. Here are some retail trends and other things to consider as you shop at your favorite small businesses. The Local Economy By supporting small businesses, you are supporting local job creation. In fact, small firms accounted for

over three-fifths of the new jobs created between 1993 and mid-2013, according to government statistics. With the National Federation of Independent Business

ing your holiday shopping budget locally strengthens Main Street and can help your community’s economy thrive. New Technologies A common stereotype of mom and pop stores are that they are antiquated and overpriced, but many small businesses are adopting new technologies to streamline their operations; which can be an important consideration for shoppers in a hurry or on a budget. For example, new Android based point of sale terminals, such as the ergonomically designed VR7000 and V-R7100 from Casio have widescreen
LCD touch panels, and an intuitive, high-resolution interface for faster sales and fewer transactional snafus. For instance, these terminals come equipped with a battery to protect memory data in the event of a power failure, and offer efficient store operations by eliminating common hardware problems experienced with PC based hardware. Such information terminals are helping to transform retail management by offering small businesses a chance to better compete against their big box counterparts. PICK TENN — It is easy to find the perfect taste of Tennessee in the Pick Tennessee Products online store. Visit www.PickTnProducts.org for more information.
Support Tennessee local businesses Going local in a big way for the holidays? Then think small. Small Business Saturday is Nov. 28, and independent shop owners across Tennessee will be looking for a bump in sales from consumers who support the retailers rooted in their own communities. Support from those who live and give locally can produce an economic ripple effect. Tennessee’s farm direct and artisan food makers often depend on other small businesses to sell their products to the public. Typical independent businesses with local products include on-farm and farmers market retail stores, gift shops, florists, wineries, food co-ops, or regional diners and restaurants. Some of these small businesses specialize in gift baskets made with Tennessee products and can ship those baskets to recipients. Another easy way to find local products without pounding the local pavement is to visit the Taste of Tennessee Online Store at www. PickTnProducts.org. Shoppers can click links and connect directly to a business or producer website. The products can then be purchased
from the producer. Find farms and retail stores with local products, seasonal foods, wineries and gift baskets at www.PickTnProducts. org. Follow Pick Tennessee on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
