#MerryMartin16 Tuesday, Dec. 20 Historic Downtown Martin

By CAMILLE NOE Special to The Press It’s the annual Merry Martin Event again and Santa’s helpers have been busy getting ready for the final shopping days before Christmas. Celebrate Merry Martin all over town Tuesday, Dec. 20, from noon to 7 p.m. This community event is centered on the importance and the impact that locally owned business have on the local economy. Merry Martin encourages shoppers to finish their last-minute holiday shopping needs with hometown businesses. All across Martin, restaurants and retail shops are staying open late and offering sales and incentives to customers looking for great deals and some holiday cheer. Many businesses will be offering exclusive flash sales and giveaways throughout the day. They will be posting their sales on social media with #MerryMartin16. For a list of participating businesses or more info, see the Martin Business Association or City of Martin Facebook pages. Every business participating in this event has also generously donated to the Merry Martin Gift Basket, which is filled with gift cards and specialty items. This gift basket will be given away to one lucky shopper. To enter for a chance to win the gift bas-

ket, shoppers need to take pictures of their purchases and post them to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #MerryMartin16. Every picture posted increases the chance of winning. The lucky winner of the gift basket will be chosen at random and will be announced on the MBA Facebook and Instagram pages Wednesday morning. The winner can pick up the gift basket at Martin City Hall any time during business hours. Santa, the brass choir, and carolers will be making appearances in businesses again this year and spreading holiday cheer. They will stroll through Historic Downtown Martin from 4 to 7 p.m. Throughout the evening, Sammies Elves will also be handing out free Sammies cookies and Santa hats to many lucky shoppers. In addition, Fantasy World Iceless Ice Skating will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. in Downtown Martin. This family friendly event is completely free to the public and provides entertainment for all ages. The Martin City Hall open house will also be taking place 1-5:30 p.m. and is a great place to start Merry Martin or warm up with free cider and snacks. This festive event would not be possible without the generosity of local businesses, community members and the true spirit that is “Merry Martin.”

Celebrating Christmas in Martin by shopping local

By BRAD THOMPSON It is hard to believe it is that time of year again. Christmas is upon us. It is time to start making lists, planning parties, and preparing for gatherings — all of which require shopping. Let me encourage you, as you make your plans and purchases, to shop in Martin. You hear that each year, but our local businesses rely on you and me to keep their doors open. And, we all rely on local business too, for revenues, community building, jobs, leadership, etc. Let us all appreciate what we have and focus on what we can do in making local business more successful. Throughout Martin we have businesses that are locally owned and provide unique services and novelties. I am proud of our hometown businesses and encourage everyone to support local businesses this holiday season, and yearround, as local businesses are the pulse of Martin.

going and show our support as a community by participating in the many Christmas holiday events and activities. “Like” the City of Martin on Facebook, and download the Martin Business Association app to find out about community events, Martin businesses, and special savings this holiday season. And remember, Shop Martin First.

We are proud to have several new locally owned businesses in Martin offering more unique goods and services. There is a trickle down effect of healthy retail in a community. Thriving businesses create community

well-being by sustaining lively downtowns, connecting residents through fostering economic and social relationships, and contributing to local causes — all of which build community development. Supporting local business

keeps dollars recycled in our own community, helps create jobs, and even helps the environment through less automobile travel. I am proud of our many locally owned businesses here in Martin. We are blessed with a vibrant, beau-

tiful downtown, as well as a variety of locally owned businesses citywide. Our role in local government is to provide to tools and “plant seeds” to help our local businesses grow and thrive. Let’s keep a good thing
