As I step into another term as Global President and CEO of CEDIA, I am filled with gratitude for the trust and support the CEDIA community has shown me. Together, we embark on a journey marked by continuity yet fueled by a fresh focus with Advocacy, Connection and Education (A.C.E.) at our core.
This past year has seen some remarkable milestones in the way of CEDIA Advocacy. I am proud to share our recent victories in amplifying the voice of our industry within the pages of this magazine. From Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill to our expanding activations in Australia and the UK, we are driving meaningful dialogue that gives Integrators the respect they deserve and shapes policy that supports innovation and growth
Speaking of innovation, there is sure to be plenty to find at CEDIA Expo 2024. We have a wide selection of special events to inspire and connect the CEDIA community over the course of four days. We’ll begin the show with the inaugural CEDIA State of the Industry, after which you’ll hear from 2024 keynote speaker, renowned American filmmaker and television director, Barry Sonnenfeld. Best known for his work on the Men in Black trilogy and the Addams Family, Sonnenfeld will share a director’s point of view on how our industries can work together to bring the magic of the movies to life at home.
The CEDIA Smart Home Technology Conference will also be a pinnacle event at CEDIA Expo this year. Regardless of your role, there truly is something for everyone—from hot topics to hands-on, and peer presentations to panels, this is the can’t-miss educational event for the smart home industry. Furthermore, attendees will have the exclusive chance to be among the first to earn CEDIA’s new Residential Networking Specialist Certification (RNS), a revised and expanded version of one of our most valued certifications.
As we look to the future, the theme of the CEDIA Smart Home Awards resonates profoundly: The Future is Now. This annual cap off to the year is a celebration of our collective achievements and a testament to the pioneering spirit that defines our association. Together, we are not merely adapting to change; we are shaping it, and the possibilities are limitless.
Sincerely,
Daryl Friedman

NEWS IN BRIEF
CEDIA BOARD EXTENDS CEO DARYL FRIEDMAN’S SERVICE THROUGH 2027
In March, CEDIA announced the extension of Daryl Friedman’s contract as its Global President and CEO through the end of 2027. Since stepping into the role in Nov. 2021, Friedman has demonstrated proven success in financial stability, industry advocacy, and increased member engagement. Foremost, his strategic financial decisions helped guide CEDIA out of the pandemic, achieving profitability for the association again for the first time in nearly five years.
Since Friedman came on board, CEDIA has experienced record-breaking new membership acquisition rates, with members now represented in over 80 countries. Engagement has also been particularly noteworthy across programs including the CEDIA Smart Home Awards, RP22 Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice, and CEDIA NextGen Smart Home Career Toolkit. In Friedman’s pursuit to bring forward CEDIA’s “best kept secret,” advocacy efforts have expanded significantly with the association’s first in-person lobby day at the Michigan State Capitol and the inaugural CEDIA Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill. Simultaneously, Friedman has continued to emphasize CEDIA’s position to adjacent trades, nurturing relationships with builders, designers, and architects.
“I’m honored to continue serving as CEDIA’s Global President and CEO and am committed to building upon the progress we’ve made across CEDIA’s three pillars of Advocacy, Connection, and Education,” said Friedman. “Together, with our committed board of directors, professional staff, dedicated volunteers, and dynamic members, I am confident we can continue serving and shaping the future of the professional smart home technology industry.”

CEDIA’s Integrated Systems Technician (IST) certification stands as the cornerstone of our industry, representing a pivotal career milestone for every technician. We’re excited to announce a new policy change: Experienced technicians with at least three years of industry experience no longer need to complete the Cabling & Infrastructure Technician (CIT) certification as a prerequisite.
This change aims to engage the vast population of experienced integrators by streamlining their path to certification. Certification not only validates your expertise but also opens doors to new opportunities, recognition, and career advancement. It demonstrates your commitment to excellence and professionalism, setting you apart in a competitive market.
Join us in embracing this change and taking the next step in your career by earning your certification at CEDIA Expo 2024 or by visiting cedia.org/certification. CEDIA Expo testing will be administered in rooms 405 and 406 on Thursday and Friday at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., and 3 p.m.

CEDIA I AM
I AM JASON BELLANTI
Partner, Spire Integrated
INTERVIEW BY: JESSICA GUYON
How did you get started in the professional smart home industry?
I have always had a passion for technology and music. In high school, I excelled in math and science, so I decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Purdue University. After I graduated and had a “real” engineering job, I quickly realized that I did not enjoy it, and decided to find a career that aligned with my passions. Around the same time, I had just purchased my first surround sound system and universal remote control, and I loved the whole setup process. Through some research, I came across the CEDIA website, and for the first time I realized that you could make a career being a custom integrator. I moved back to Michigan, got a job with Navot Shoresh at Spire, and the rest is history.
How has your background in mechanical engineering influenced your role as an integrator?
Earning my engineering degree was an extremely challenging task, but it taught me a lot about hard work and persistence. Some of the lessons I learned in school, such as time management (balancing schoolwork, marching band, and a tiny bit of free time), have helped me succeed as an integrator. I also learned how to troubleshoot and problem solve as an engineer. The
engineering world taught me that the answer is not always a simple one, but other times, it is.
In the world of custom integration, I have done everything from installation, programming, operations, project management, and leadership, including leading an executive team. All the skills I acquired as an engineer have had a direct or indirect impact on what I have done in my career as an integrator.
Can you describe your current position as partner of Spire Integrated?
I am a partner with Spire’s founder, Navot Shoresh. My main role as Director of Operations is to oversee the project management and installation teams. We like to keep things simple, so my main focus every day is to deliver “Quality Work, and an Exceptional Customer Experience.” The core values and culture at Spire play a key role in allowing us to do just that, and Navot and I have an incredible team that makes it happen each and every day.
You recently participated in CEDIA’s first in-person lobbying effort at the Michigan State Capitol. Why is industry advocacy so important to you?
This industry changes at a rapid pace, and Spire always strives to be at the forefront of innovation. We were one of the earliest companies to adopt lighting design and lighting fixtures as a core part of our business, and it has become a significant portion of what we do.
The ability to transform a space with the touch of a button is the ultimate blend of experience, emotion, and convenience.
On the flip side of technology and innovation is legislation, which can have a dramatic effect on our industry in the future – it’s actually one of the main reasons I joined CEDIA. We, as custom integrators, need to have our voices heard so that more awareness is brought about in our industry. CEDIA’s lobbying day in Michigan was a prime example of the type of proactive, collective effort that is necessary to protect the work we do. As technology continues to evolve, our industry
must remain vigilant in advocating for our interests and ensuring that regulatory decisions support innovation and growth. It’s always better to be a part of the change as opposed to having change imposed upon you.
What excites you most about this industry? Is there anything specific you are passionate about or consider to be your “niche?”
My favorite part of this industry when I started 18 years ago was lighting control and it remains my favorite today. The ability to transform a space with the touch of a button is the ultimate blend of experience, emotion, and convenience. When you add in motorized window treatments and circadian lighting technology, it takes everything to the next level. On the non-technology side, I also have a passion for operations, project management, and leadership. It is always exciting to work with the team at Spire and coach them through challenges. My favorite part about leadership is the moment when something “clicks” for an employee, and I get to see the techniques we worked on used in their job.
What advice would you offer to someone looking to pursue a career in this industry?
The best advice I can give to someone who wants to pursue a career in this industry is to keep an open mind about your job role. There are so many paths an employee can take over the course of their career. We have had countless employees at Spire who started out as technicians or system designers and go on to become system specialists, department heads, and managers. Over the years, Navot and I have even had employees approach us about creating new departments. We always welcome that type of forward thinking. In fact, we now have three additional departments at Spire because of employees who approached us with a business plan that aligned with their passions.
“
It’s always better to be a part of the change as opposed to having change imposed upon you.

At the heart of every great smart home integration project is a robust, reliable, and secure network. While every integrator should possess basic networking knowledge, the demands of today’s home networks increasingly require technicians to have a deeper knowledge of networking concepts and an advanced skill set.
Recognizing the ongoing importance of networking proficiency, CEDIA set out on a revision and expansion process for one of its most valued certifications: the Networking Specialist (ESC-N) Certification. The certification has been rebranded as the Residential Networking Specialist (RNS) Certification, reflecting its tailored focus on residential networking solutions.
THE REVISION PROCESS
The development process for the RNS Certification began with intensive research and collaboration from key industry stakeholders. Led by a task force of 15 volunteers, CEDIA conducted a Job Task Analysis survey, gathering feedback from a global pool of integrators and manufacturers. Insights gleaned from the survey proved pivotal as the Certification Commission worked to redesign the exam while CEDIA’s education team curated an enriched curriculum, encompassing an array of wireless and security topics.
“We’ve always felt it was important for integrators to have a strong networking footing,” says Farr Shepherd, President of Decyher Technologies. “In fact, I would say it’s so important nowadays where the Internet of Things has all the devices connected. We’re seeing challenges we’ve never seen before.”
WHAT’S NEW?
The RNS ensures certified professionals are adept not only in installing equipment, but also in understanding how networks work. This enables them to make appropriate design and configuration decisions and perform more effective troubleshooting. To adequately cover this growing body of knowledge and skills, the scope of the exam has both deepened and broadened with a new section added just to address security topics. Because of the updates, the exam has grown from 100 questions to 150 questions with an extra hour of testing time allotted.
“There are fundamental differences between residential and commercial applications and needs,” explains Dennis Erskine, Founder of Erskine Group, Inc.
and CEDIA Fellow. “The RNS Certification focuses on the often-unique needs and circumstances found in residential applications.”
Additionally, the RNS Certification embodies a commitment to professional ethics and requires that candidates adhere to a prescribed code of conduct. This ethical framework underscores CEDIA’s dedication to fostering a community of certified professionals who exemplify integrity, technical competence, and unwavering professionalism.
HOW TO PREPARE
To complement the revamped certification, CEDIA is rolling out a series of new courses designed to equip technicians with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field of networking integration.
CEDIA Expo attendees can also take advantage of a four-hour review course on Thursday, Sept. 5 led by CEDIA Senior Director of Technology Education, Steven Rissi.
TAKING THE EXAM
The RNS Certification beta exam will be available to take at CEDIA Expo or online from Sept. 1-30. The beta exam is offered at discounted rate of $50 USD,
regardless of CEDIA membership status. Results from the beta exam will be available in October, and those who pass will earn the full RNS Certification. Feedback from the beta exam is highly encouraged as the certification teams work to build the exam’s final version.
Those who currently hold an ESC-N Certification are encouraged to participate in the beta exam but will otherwise transition to the RNS Certification at their next renewal cycle when they sign the new code of conduct. Like the ESC-N, the RNS Certification is valid for three years and requires 30 CEUs to be renewed.
DISPLAYING PROFESSIONALISM
With its expanded curriculum, rigorous examination process, and unwavering commitment to excellence, the RNS Certification sets a new benchmark for networking proficiency in the realm of residential technology integration. Certification holders should feel proud to display their status to clients, industry partners, and colleagues alike. Along with the launch of the exam, CEDIA has prepared a collection of RNS promotional materials for social media, printed materials, websites, and more.
For more information about the RNS or any of CEDIA’s certifications, visit cedia.org/certification
CEDIA Senior Director of Technology Education, Steven Rissi will host an RNS review course on Thursday, Sept. 5 at CEDIA Expo.
Over the past year, and along with significant industry support, CEDIA’s advocacy efforts have been dynamic and extensive. In addition to regular monitoring of bills, regulations, and legislative sessions, the government affairs department has orchestrated monumental initiatives at some of the highest levels of government. These proactive measures have brought the professional smart home industry to the attention of numerous legislative leaders – and rallied CEDIA members from around the globe in the process.
SHAPING TOMORROW
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to create a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for wireless consumer Internet of Things (IoT) products. In an open call for comments, CEDIA expressed support for the concept of the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, but also emphasized the importance of professional installation by qualified integrators as a necessary means of safeguarding homeowners. The association asserts that integrators are key in the mitigation of security risks because of their extensive knowledge on how to install, maintain, connect, and deploy technology systems in the home. This marks the first introduction of the CEDIA community with FCC, and further emphasizes the importance of continued partnership between the government and integrator community so that consumers can enjoy the benefits of technology with greater confidence and trust.
During the inaugural CEDIA Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill, board members, executives, and industry leaders engaged in pivotal discussions with U.S. political leaders to introduce CEDIA and advocate for critical issues facing the professional smart home industry. One of the key focal points was the endorsement of the Freedom To Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act (H.R. 1477/S.722), which would broaden the scope of tax-favorable 529 savings plans to include workforce training and credentialing programs. Additionally, CEDIA urged Congress to formally recognize “integrator” as an occupation within the next Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) revision, highlighting integrators’ distinct and critical skillset from other trades.
CEDIA ORGANIZES SMART HOME DAY ON CAPITOL HILL
Oklahoma Senate Bill 1572, as introduced at the start of the 2024 Oklahoma legislative session, added the word “alarm” to Class 2 and Class 3 circuits exemption within the Oklahoma Electrical License Act. CEDIA lobbied to include the Class 2 and Class 3 circuit exemption within the Oklahoma Electrical Act in 2018 and has worked since that time to protect the exemption for residential integrators. With the
addition of the word “alarm,” integrators would have lost the ability to serve their customers without an electrical license. In Feb. 2024, Senate Bill 1572 was amended, and the word “alarm” has been removed from the Class 2 and Class 3 circuits exemption. Prior to this, CEDIA reached out to the bill sponsor with concerns and requested a meeting. The bill was removed from the committee hearing agenda and later amended.
CEDIA OPPOSES TROUBLESOME RHODE ISLAND BILLS
At the beginning of 2024, Rhode Island General Assembly session House Bill 7015 and Senate Bill 2120 were introduced. The bills are related to the businesses and professions of electricians. Both bills would specifically add to the Electrical License and Electrical Contractors license definitions with such broad terms of support systems, lighting, and control of electrical devices forcing residential integrators to become electricians to complete most technology projects throughout Rhode Island if enacted. CEDIA provided written testimony opposing House Bill 7015 before the House Committee on Corporations and opposing Senate Bill 2120 before the Senate Labor Committee. Currently, the committees have recommended both bills be held for further study. At the end of May, the House Committee on Corporations held another committee hearing on a substitute version of House Bill 7015. At the beginning of June, the Senate Labor Committee held another committee hearing on a substitute version of Senate Bill 2120. The Rhode Island General Assembly session concluded at the end of June.
The Class 2 and Class 3 circuits exemption is back to its original intent, which allows for a proper distinction between the work of residential integrators and electricians. Senate Bill 1572 has been successfully amended, continues to move through the legislative process, and has been signed into law with the Class 2 and Class 3 circuits exemption in its original form.
GLOBAL ADVOCACY
Collaborating with government officials in Australia and New Zealand, CEDIA is advocating for the official recognition of the job title “integrator” at a governmental level, seeking inclusion in national census data and positioning for more effective lobbying efforts. Additionally, CEDIA has joined TechUK, a prominent trade association dedicated to harnessing the potential of digital technology for positive societal outcomes. This alliance provides CEDIA members in the UK with access to influential policy discussions, enabling greater engagement with policymakers and the opportunity to shape future regulations and initiatives.
WHAT’S NEXT?
With an eye on the future and a commitment to the present, CEDIA continues to lead the charge in bringing the professional smart home industry to the forefront of public policy discussions. For more information on how you can get involved in any of CEDIA’s advocacy efforts, visit cedia.org/advocacy

PREMIERING AT CEDIA EXPO 2024
AUTHENTIC DALI SOUND – OUTDOORS
The signature DALI sound is now available beyond indoor applications. The new PHANTOM E-WR series of weather resistant speakers, as well as the new GARDIAN OW 6, premiering at CEDIA EXPO 2024, take DALI Hi-Fi outdoors.
DALI outdoor loudspeakers are conceived, designed, and engineered in-house in Denmark. The GARDIAN OW 6 and PHANTOM E-WR are true DALI loudspeakers, taking the celebrated DALI sound principles outdoors for the first time, allowing you to create upscale solutions focusing on performance.
TWO SOLUTIONS, ONE GREAT SOUND
Projects vary, so we have created two separate speaker solutions to serve different applications:
The PHANTOM E-WR series focuses on applications calling for flexibility. The E-WR in-ceiling loudspeakers are suited for almost any location and audio system. Engineered weather resistance and IP65 rated protection makes the E-WR suitable for high humidity and covered in- and outdoor locations.
DALI low-loss, high performance quality leaves the house and ventures outside with the GARDIAN OW 6 outdoor loudspeakers. Combining water and dust proof, high performance wide dispersion drivers with a stylish all-weather cabinet and toolless, auto-connect, click-fit pan and tilt mounting hardware, the GARDIAN OW 6 provides an answer to the most demanding, all weather, outdoor loudspeaker needs.
GARDIAN OW 6
THE DALI PHANTOM
• Waterproof and dust-proof to IP67
The GARDIAN OW 6’s IP67 certification provides effective immunity to dust and water ingress to enable installation even in exposed locations throughout all seasons and weather conditions.
• Simple click-fit bracket
The outdoor environment can sometimes complicate loudspeaker installation. The DALI GARDIAN OW 6, however, includes our simple Click ‘n Connect mounting bracket solution that simplifies and speeds up installation even in the trickiest locations and conditions.
• Engineered weather resistance
Outdoor installation means loudspeakers are exposed to natural temperature variations. With its -20°C to +70°C temperature tolerance temperatures may change, but GARDIAN OW 6 keeps the music playing.
• Landscape or portrait
The DALI GARDIAN OW 6 can be installed in portrait or landscape orientation.
• Easy connection with hidden cables
Combining hidden, weather proofed cable connections with the simplicity of spring terminals helps hugely with GARDIAN OW 6 installations. Mounting brackets incorporate bare-wire spring terminal posts protected by a removable cover, and once secured in position, the loudspeaker automatically connects electrically.
• IP65 certified
IP65 (Ingress Protection) rating combined with a DALI designed wide dispersion bass/mid driver and 25 mm dome tweeter, the E-WR combines high performance audio and great installation versatility.
• High performance in-ceiling loudspeaker with engineered weather resistance
With weather resistant features suitable for covered outdoor and high humidity locations, the PHANTOM E-WR in-ceiling loudspeaker can fill almost every space with Hi-FI sound. From background music in the laundry room, bathroom, spa or by the pool, to multi-channel audio out on the deck, the PHANTOM E-WR has all spaces covered. E-WR, weather resistance, means suitability for installation where temperatures may fall to -20°C and reach +60°C. Humidity up to 100% is similarly no problem for the E-WR. With its IP65 rating, even indirect water spray is a non-issue. And the E-60 WR is effectively immune to dust or sand!
• Wide bandwidth and high power for elevated SPL applications
The E-WR bass/midrange and tweeter drivers are specifically designed, using powerful magnets and lightweight diaphragms, to offer high sensitivity requiring less amplifier power to achieve the necessary volume levels. The benefits are lower heat dissipation, greater amplifier reliability and potentially lower cost.

RP22: BRINGING SCIENCE TO RESIDENTIAL AUDIO
RP22 is a game-changing set of guidelines aimed at revolutionizing immersive sound systems. When it launched, the goal was clear: to create a standard that everyone – from integrators and manufacturers to designers and homeowners – could reference in the creation of high-quality home audio experiences. By establishing objective metrics, RP22 helps ensure that everyone involved in the process knows exactly what they are getting and what the system is delivering.
We recently caught up with industry experts to discuss how RP22 is being adopted and supported within their companies.
What were your first impressions of RP22?
Nick Fichte, Business Development Director at LAcoustics, recalls his initial reaction: “When I first heard about RP22, I knew it was a good thing for the industry as the science and engineering behind it gives us a way to quantify and justify the cost and performance of a theater.”
“RP22 did a lot of the groundwork that I usually have to do when it comes to setting speaker requirements,” comments Michael Hedges, Technical Director at Monitor Audio Group. “Now, I can look at this set of documentation and decide how I’m going to design a loudspeaker to best perform in the environment with some real data that’s been created by industry leaders.
The engineering team has embraced the guidelines with enthusiasm. Our engineers have a vast wealth of theoretical knowledge and RP22 has inspired them with more data and information, and they are processing it all the time to consider how best they can apply it.”
“It’s great that the document was updated to include details about immersive sound and best practices,” adds Sébastien Gailleton, Director, Product Management and Hardware Development at StormAudio. It opens the door to a more design-orientated approach and provides a comprehensive guide to room design.”
Did it matter to you who was involved with creating this document?
“What was important for me was that there was a

spread of people involved rather than an infiltrated manufacturer-recommended practice that pointed towards someone’s idea of loudspeaker design as being the right way of doing it,” adds Michael. “The guidelines should reflect user experiences rather than promoting a specific manufacturer’s perspective on loudspeaker design, so having that spread of people across nations as well as industries was really useful.”
Nick notes that with the process involving a mix of experienced professionals and newcomers across different job roles, ensures a variety of opinions and insights. “This inclusive approach, though timeconsuming, was essential for achieving a consensus that genuinely reflects the industry’s needs.”
How are you adopting RP22 within your company?
“As soon as RP22 became available, we made sure that the team of application engineers who are responsible for creating sound system designs for residential and marine integrators understood the document thoroughly,” explains Nick. “This way, we can assist all our integrators, including those who might not have the time to immerse themselves in the document or attend the training courses. Once the team had fully absorbed it, we changed our approach when dealing with integrators. Now, we always ask them what RP22 level they are trying to achieve and will then design in line with the recommended practices, and state channel by channel which level that will achieve within the room.”
Michael focused on internal education: “The first thing we did was adopt RP22 within our engineering team, using it as an educational tool. With the service team getting questions about it right from the beginning, we deployed internal training to get everyone up to speed on it and then also sent some of the team to the CEDIA training sessions to get a more in-depth knowledge of

it. We run distribution partners globally and it is training the trainer. When our service team doesn’t have an answer, they come and speak to the acoustics team, and they run simulations and support them in what they need to do to learn how. ”
Sébastien mentions, “We ensure our decoding and post-processing capabilities align with RP22 requirements, giving integrators the flexibility they need for proper system configuration.”
Is there awareness of RP22 globally?
Nick notes, “In the UK, RP22 is well-adopted, and everyone is talking about it. In the US, awareness is growing, but there’s still work to be done. Other countries like India and Australia have seen good uptake too.”
“Adoption varies by country,” adds Michael. “The UK is maturing in this area, but in places like China, RP22 is almost unheard of.”
Does RP22 support you in conversations with designers and homeowners?
Nick highlights the practical benefits: “RP22 will allow us to communicate with designers and homeowners, but we are at the very early stages of this. It’s an independent standard, which makes it easier to justify design choices and explain the importance of the positioning of speaker systems.”
He continues, “For integrators, using RP22 in your designs and informing clients about it can make a big difference. It shows that they are adhering to best practices, which can lead to a better final experience. It will help set you apart from other companies who aren’t doing so.”
What is the future of immersive audio?
Sébastien looks ahead: “There’s a trend towards multipurpose media rooms and flat panel displays, which pose challenges for sound reproduction as you get less space for the speakers and often with no space to fit them in. To address this, we’re developing tools like phantom image adjustments for center channels. On one hand, this brings more “knowledge” about good practices, but on the other, it makes it more complex and will require more training and expertise.”
RP22 is set to transform the home theater industry by providing clear, objective standards for immersive audio. As more companies adopt these guidelines, the quality of home audio experiences is bound to improve, ensuring that both consumers and professionals benefit from this innovative approach.
