NADINE AUBRIOT

Export Manager at Waterfall Audio

How did you get started in the smart home industry?

When Waterfall Audio launched in 1996, the smart home industry was almost non-existent. The focus was purely two-channel audio. We took this as an opportunity to focus on high-end quality products, such as drivers from the beginning. This meant that as time went on, we only needed to add new speaker designs using our same high-end drivers which allowed us to be specified on multi-room audio and cinema installations. My experience has always been working in export departments for many companies. So, when the time came for Waterfall Audio to start exporting, I knew that this was the job for me and I joined my partner, Cedric Aubriot at the company.

You travel around the world with Waterfall Audio –what are some of the key differences in the countries you have visited?

It is fascinating to travel around the world and see what differences there are. Some countries are further ahead with technology, but very conservative in their choices of audio components, while others are more advanced with design and are mixing technology and design in a clever way. I would say that North America is more conservative, while Asia and the Middle East are ready for more exotic design choices. Europe is definitely more focused on the design aspect. In France – which is where Waterfall Audio is based – we see a mix of technology and design, but I would say that we

are still behind the UK and other EMEA countries in terms of smart home and private home cinema installations. I have no doubt that we will catch up very quickly.

You recently became a CEDIA Ambassador – what made you want to join this program?

I wanted to help grow the awareness of the CEDIA Community that is made up of manufacturers, distributors, and integrators, and to help the profession become more widely known.

The education platform that CEDIA provides is very resourceful for integrators. I would love to see CEDIA become a label of quality for knowledge and service, making it easier for integrators when they look for new customers in the market.

What activities have you done so far as part of this role?

I’ve utilized the fact that I travel so much with Waterfall Audio to spread the word about CEDIA to a wider audience. I have helped consolidate and confirm new CEDIA members, have focused on the importance of education to integrators and distributors in their respective regions, and have signed them up to their local CEDIA Tech + Business Summits.

In October last year, I encouraged CEDIA to attend the Paris Audio Video Show. This was a great success as it put CEDIA in front of professionals that they hadn’t met before and allowed them to explain the benefits of CEDIA membership.

Bringing people together and developing synergies is what I like to do, and this is how I plan to support CEDIA going forward.

Bringing people together and developing synergies is what I like to do, and this is how I plan to support CEDIA going forward.

What kind of feedback do you get from people when you speak to them about CEDIA?

Many small integration firms or integrators that are working alone feel isolated and turn to forums, blogs, etc. to find the help that they need in resolving some of their day-to-day problems. When I explain to them the

support system that they get by joining CEDIA, they are very enthusiastic about this community aspect. I believe that the new membership tiering and the CEDIA App will be great accelerators for integrators to discover the benefits of joining CEDIA. It is easier to get manufacturers to join as the discount that CEDIA members receive at shows such as CEDIA Expo and ISE is hugely beneficial. This was the main reason why Waterfall Audio joined CEDIA many years ago.

You always have a presence at key industry events such as CEDIA Expo and ISE. What do you enjoy about these events and what other shows do you go to throughout the year?

We use the two biggest events for this industry – CEDIA Expo and ISE – to launch our products to the world. They also provide us with the opportunity to spend quality time with new and existing customers and host evening parties for our distributors and dealers. When we attend other trade shows, we are of course promoting our brand, but these events are usually done hand-in-hand with our local distributors, and this provides us with a chance to give them recognition in their respective markets and bring the “Made in France” and “French Art de Vivre” feeling along with it. We usually tag on a training session for regional staff at the same time. In France, our national show – Paris Audio Video Show –is the platform for showing various French technologies and design under one roof.

What excites you most about this industry?

This industry is vibrant, it evolves very quickly, and it provides us with the opportunity to push boundaries. It remains a versatile industry with different choices in music and their reproduction. Music brings people together; it is the greatest connector.

Elevate Your Projects: An Interior Designer’s Guide to Collaboration and Innovation

With over 20 years of experience, I have completed numerous projects across the UK – with particular focus on sustainable, circular, and regenerative interior design.

I have attended the CEDIA Smart Home Awards for the last two years. This event provides me with a great opportunity to not only see the award-winning projects, but to also network with integrators and discuss how our two professions collide.

Here, I give integrators my advice on how they can build better working relationships with designers..

1

COLLABORATION WITH INTERIOR DESIGNERS

I have spoken in the past about how I’d like integrators to view interior designers as conductors of a project, with the other professionals representing the orchestra. As the lead on the project, we need to understand the capabilities of technology to be able to explain this effectively to clients, so it’s key that all relevant information is communicated to us from the integrator.

This could be achieved through CPD’s, showroom visits, and handson demonstrations of technology. This type of information would enable us to grasp the difference between standard functionalities,

elevated features, and high-end options, helping us to excite clients about the possibilities for their smart home.

SIMPLICITY IN DESIGN

2

It’s my advice that at the initial stage of the project, integrators aim for simplicity in both the physical design of technology and the digital control interfaces. Start with straightforward setups that clients can then decide on customizing to suit their needs –it will make technology seem less daunting to clients, particularly those who aren’t tech-savvy.

3 EARLY PLANNING FOR AV INFRASTRUCTURE

Design with the AV rack placement in mind during the initial planning stages. This ensures that all necessary equipment has a designated space, reducing last-minute adjustments or compromises. Incorporate blank plates for potential wall or ceilingmounted equipment to avoid disruptive modifications later.

EMPHASIS ON FIRE SAFETY

4

Fire safety is a number one priority for interior designers and being able to rely on a system to keep occupants safe is invaluable. Understand and advocate for the latest technological advancements in fire safety so that clients understand

the importance of smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as indoor air quality monitoring –it’s often smoke and toxic fumes, rather than flames, that pose the greatest danger.

5 PLANNING FOR FUTURE EXPANSION

With how quickly technology develops, it is important for integrators to offer designers advice on future-proofing strategies for smart home technologies, ensuring that specified products can be updated or replaced without extensive renovations.

6 LONG-TERM MAINTENANCE PLANNING

Interior designers would find a resource that outlines expected maintenance or replacement timelines for major components over the next 25 years incredibly useful. I’d suggest that the document include the anticipated lifespan of wiring and other components and recommendations for disposal or recycling of outdated products. This would help designers inform clients about future costs and allow for better integration of maintenance considerations into the design process.

7 CONSIDERATION FOR O&M MANUALS

It would be great to see integrators and designers working closely to ensure that O&M manuals include the required access panels for easy maintenance and strategies for achieving access without damaging existing structures. This attention to detail showcases thoughtful design, enhances user experience, and aligns with sustainable practices and waste reduction.

By focusing on collaboration, simplicity, long-term planning, and safety, technology integrators and interior designers can work together to deliver exceptional projects.

AUTHENTIC DALI SOUND – OUTDOORS

The signature DALI sound is now available beyond indoor applications. The new PHANTOM E-WR series of weather resistant speakers, as well as the new GARDIAN OW 6, premiering at CEDIA EXPO 2024, take DALI Hi-Fi outdoors.

DALI outdoor loudspeakers are conceived, designed, and engineered in-house in Denmark. The GARDIAN OW 6 and PHANTOM E-WR are true DALI loudspeakers, taking the celebrated DALI sound principles outdoors for the first time, allowing you to create upscale solutions focusing on performance.

TWO SOLUTIONS, ONE GREAT SOUND

Projects vary, so we have created two separate speaker solutions to serve different applications:

The PHANTOM E-WR series focuses on applications calling for flexibility. The E-WR in-ceiling loudspeakers are suited for almost any location and audio system. Engineered weather resistance and IP65 rated protection makes the E-WR suitable for high humidity and covered in- and outdoor locations.

DALI low-loss, high performance quality leaves the house and ventures outside with the GARDIAN OW 6 outdoor loudspeakers. Combining water and dust proof, high performance wide dispersion drivers with a stylish all-weather cabinet and toolless, auto-connect, click-fit pan and tilt mounting hardware, the GARDIAN OW 6 provides an answer to the most demanding, all weather, outdoor loudspeaker needs.

• Waterproof and dust-proof to IP67

The GARDIAN OW 6’s IP67 certification provides effective immunity to dust and water ingress to enable installation even in exposed locations throughout all seasons and weather conditions.

• Simple click-fit bracket

The outdoor environment can sometimes complicate loudspeaker installation. The DALI GARDIAN OW 6, however, includes our simple Click ‘n Connect mounting bracket solution that simplifies and speeds up installation even in the trickiest locations and conditions.

• Engineered weather resistance

Outdoor installation means loudspeakers are exposed to natural temperature variations. With its -20°C to +70°C temperature tolerance temperatures may change, but GARDIAN OW 6 keeps the music playing.

• Landscape or portrait

The DALI GARDIAN OW 6 can be installed in portrait or landscape orientation.

• Easy connection with hidden cables

Combining hidden, weather proofed cable connections with the simplicity of spring terminals helps hugely with GARDIAN OW 6 installations. Mounting brackets incorporate bare-wire spring terminal posts protected by a removable cover, and once secured in position, the loudspeaker automatically connects electrically.

• IP65 certified

IP65 (Ingress Protection) rating combined with a DALI designed wide dispersion bass/mid driver and 25 mm dome tweeter, the E-WR combines high performance audio and great installation versatility.

• High performance in-ceiling loudspeaker with engineered weather resistance

With weather resistant features suitable for covered outdoor and high humidity locations, the PHANTOM E-WR in-ceiling loudspeaker can fill almost every space with Hi-FI sound. From background music in the laundry room, bathroom, spa or by the pool, to multi-channel audio out on the deck, the PHANTOM E-WR has all spaces covered. E-WR, weather resistance, means suitability for installation where temperatures may fall to -20°C and reach +60°C. Humidity up to 100% is similarly no problem for the E-WR. With its IP65 rating, even indirect water spray is a non-issue. And the E-60 WR is effectively immune to dust or sand!

• Wide bandwidth and high power for elevated SPL applications

The E-WR bass/midrange and tweeter drivers are specifically designed, using powerful magnets and lightweight diaphragms, to offer high sensitivity requiring less amplifier power to achieve the necessary volume levels. The benefits are lower heat dissipation, greater amplifier reliability and potentially lower cost.

How to Build Award-Winning Racks

Liquid Automation was awarded the Excellence in Rack Building and Design award at the 2024 CEDIA Smart Home Awards APAC. As the only winner of this award globally, Home Tech Pro recently spoke with Stephan Goodhue, Director at Liquid Automation Ltd to find out what the company’s process was for designing and building the best racks in the industry.

> INDUSTRY STANDARDS

Our design process was indicative of standard practice even though we were reusing existing infrastructure racks. We knew that we had space limitations both in height and depth and had to design the racks around what already existed. However, applying our usual design inputs quickly indicated that there was a clear way forward and that we could maximize our system potential by utilizing the space afforded to us across all three 31RU enclosures. Having modified the equipment list to ensure that the majority of the kit was 19” rack mountable, it was decided that each rack should serve a specific task so they were split into House Multi Room Audio System, Theatre Video Sources, and Theatre Audio Processing/ Amplification.

Existing power supplies to the racks were not up to code and were upgraded by the electrician as per our loading schedule. We were also aware of the site’s poor power supply being remote with fluctuating mains incoming, so a power conditioner was added. To aid inter rack wiring and thermal dissipation, we also removed the

partitions between each enclosure. All cabling and terminations were to be industry best practice, and all cabling was to be internal to the racks and communal cable way underneath.

> ACCESSIBILITY

In this project, the narrow layout of the rack room posed an accessibility challenge, particularly for navigating passed racks during maintenance. This was addressed by the use of the existing Rittal swivel racks, allowing each rack to rotate for easy rear access and enabling staff to move around them without obstruction.

Given the equipment’s depth, we engineered custom side rails that support both the weight and depth of components. These rails provide the necessary clearance to fit rear rails with minimal margins, ensuring racks can rotate smoothly without interference. This setup optimizes accessibility and safety in tight spaces, allowing efficient and secure equipment management with equipment grouped together for operator convenience. We also had the builder move the existing wall out a further 150mm to allow for more space.

> FUTURE EXPANSION

POSSIBILITIES

The separation of the source video equipment into its own rack means that the backbone amplification (which you would not expect to upgrade that often) could all be grouped together and wired with an expectation of long-term hassle-free usage. The sources rack has plenty of space to add sat decoders, media servers, and streaming boxes. The Trinnov is a robust, upgradeable surround processor which is essential to accommodate emerging audio formats – all of this available thanks to regular firmware updates rather than physical equipment changes.

Additionally, we used fiber connections between the screen and rack, which provides ample bandwidth to support future resolution advancements and eliminates grounding issues. This setup ensures the system is both future-proof and maintains optimal signal integrity.

> THERMAL MANAGEMENT

For thermal management, we performed detailed BTU calculations during the design phase to ensure the AC unit’s cooling capacity was perfectly matched to the heat output from the technology racks. Additionally, we integrated the AC unit with a high-level interface to our Crestron system, allowing for real-time temperature monitoring and precise set-point control. This setup ensures the equipment operates within optimal temperature ranges, enhancing system reliability and longevity.

> SERVICEABILITY

Liquid racks are meticulously designed for reliability and easy access, ensuring that any Liquid technician — not just the original integrator — can perform maintenance with confidence. We provide detailed documentation that traces each connection down to the individual connector.

Combined with swivel racks and rear-facing cable labels, this setup allows technicians to view cable details effortlessly, supporting efficient servicing and troubleshooting.

> CABLING

For cabling, we prioritize both environmental responsibility and ease of maintenance. We use reusable, eco-friendly Velcro ties that are gentle on cables and allow for easy adjustments. For reliability and straightforward rewiring, all connectors are bootlaced or crimped. To minimize interference, we carefully separate high-voltage power (230V) and 12V triggers from audio cables, keeping them on opposite sides. Additionally, we ensure all cable bend radii are designed to provide clear access to other connectors on each device, supporting efficient maintenance and optimizing signal integrity.

> DOCUMENTATION

We create custom system drawings for every project, assigning each piece of equipment a unique tag. These tags are central to both our installation process and our after-sales support, representing a distinctive advantage that we consider proprietary intellectual property. Using these detailed drawings, we position each component in the racks, calculate BTU

(heat output) and power consumption in watts, and determine the appropriate AC and power supply — whether 10A or 16A — for each rack. This thorough documentation ensures optimal system performance and reliability.

> CHALLENGES

The design and implementation of this theater were largely seamless, though we did encounter a few design challenges that required thoughtful solutions. The decision to use a video wall instead of a projector, for instance, required splitting the center channel above and below the display. Rather than simply splitting the audio, we chose an AVR processor with advanced channel management to allow for independent configuration of level and frequency response, as each speaker’s position (one near the ceiling, the other near the floor) resulted in different sound characteristics. This led us to choose Trinnov due to its depth compatibility with our rack space limitations.

Additionally, since this theater build was part of a larger home renovation, we needed to complete installation while other areas remained under construction. The theater control room was occasionally an active building site, with concrete pours and other construction activities nearby. We

coordinated closely with BOYD COX + THOMPSON Builders to manage these challenges, prioritizing client deadlines for the theater’s completion over other aspects of the renovation.

As the rack enclosures were existing, it was decided to remove the swivel chassis’, create rudimentary timber feet to allow the racks to freestand and remove from site to allow us to build in our dedicated assembly area. This also allowed us to pre-configure and commission the whole system prior to site installation, delivering a fully operational system well ahead of the main build’s conclusion requiring only minor adjustments before final commissioning and handover.

The builder requested a series of audio tests well in advance of handover to check the integrity of the interior fit out including acoustic treatment and speaker mounting, subwoofer placement, and any structural rattles. This was accomplished by transporting all equipment to site and wiring up temporarily for a dry run. Being an active building site, these tests were conducted during trade breaks or after hours to minimize disruption.

JOY DIVISION ROOM

INTEGRATOR COMPANY: M.E.G.A. AV INSTALLATIONS

CATEGORY: BEST MEDIA ROOM

Within a contemporary penthouse apartment in the UK, the Joy Division Room merges high-end technology with cutting-edge architectural design, setting a new standard in media room innovation. Crafted by M.E.G.A. AV Installations and brought to life with the architectural expertise of Volume 3 Architects, this room has become a globally recognized masterpiece. Named after the iconic UK band Joy Division, whose music transformed the post-punk landscape, the room captures the band’s emotional depth and complexity in its design. The ceiling,

inspired by the band’s legendary album cover artwork, is an inverted sound wave waterfall — a striking design element that instantly captures the essence of innovation and homage.

Visitors are struck by the room’s unique aesthetic, which combines sophisticated technology with artistic vision. Designed to function optimally as a high-quality home cinema for films and sports, a high-fidelity listening room, and a cozy living and party space, the room meets multifunctional needs without compromising on design or performance.

The collaboration with Volume 3 Architects was key, especially in ensuring the ceiling design met both aesthetic and acoustic standards. The architect also took on the role of interior designer, ensuring a seamless integration of

“”
THE JOY DIVISION ROOM IS MORE THAN JUST A SPACE; IT IS A TRIBUTE TO INNOVATION, ART, AND THE ENDURING IMPACT OF ITS NAMESAKE BAND.

technology without compromising the design’s integrity. This integration is critical, given the room’s sophisticated control systems, including extensive Lutron Dali-based lighting, automated shading, climate control, multi-room audio, and a robust home network.

The ceiling’s suspended ribbed structure, made from veneered MDF, serves a dual purpose. It acts as a large diffuser to enhance the room’s acoustics while the integrated LED strips transform it into a modern chandelier. This setup ensures controlled acoustics, crucial for both cinematic viewing and

high-fidelity listening. Strategically placed high-density acoustic foam blocks serve as bass traps, and the large sofas also play a role in controlling low frequencies.

The room’s architectural features, such as high ceilings and extensive windows and glass doors, presented significant acoustic challenges. However, M.E.G.A. AV Installations adeptly managed these with a combination of absorptive and diffusive materials. The windows necessitated the strategic placement of bass traps and a high-level positioning of all speakers. Due to the extensive glass, side speakers were omitted, and instead, all speakers were installed high up, near the ceiling, focusing on an enveloping sound experience.

The exceptional sound quality is crucial, as the room must cater to the needs of a dedicated audiophile and former music journalist. His high-end turntable-based hifi system required a space where large floorstanding speakers could be positioned under the suspended cinema soundbar to create an immersive audio experience, suitable for both movie nights and music listening.

The Joy Division Room is more than just a space; it is a tribute to innovation, art, and the enduring impact of its namesake band. Just as Joy Division’s music pushed the boundaries of what was possible within their genre, this media room pushes the boundaries of architectural and technological integration. The synergy between form and function within the room echoes the band’s own synthesis of profound lyrics and groundbreaking sound. This project goes beyond mere aesthetics to embody the spirit of an era that redefined music, now reimagined through a space where history and modernity converge seamlessly. It’s a room that not only serves its purpose with distinction but also respects and revives the legacy of Joy Division in every detail, resonating with those who appreciate the depth of their influence.

In 2017, there was a major breach at a Las Vegas casino. Through a controller operating a fish tank, someone was able to break in and access portions of the network. It wasn’t on its own VLAN, it was connected to the main network. This meant that once they got access to the one fish tank controller, they were able to delve deeper into the casino’s network and steal vast sums of money.

So, the question is, at what point does the integrator become liable? Will integrators get sued because a cybersecurity issue enabled someone to break into a property that they worked on? And will homeowners argue that, ‘you installed the technology, so you are liable’?

We already address these and other questions. In fact, we’ve been working with CEDIA members since 1993.

On one occasion, we had a situation with an integrator who had installed a Nest thermostat in a business owner’s home. Unfortunately, he had neglected to reset the default password. This oversight opened the door for an unauthorized individual to access the Nest device, which then allowed them to infiltrate the owner’s work computer and gain access to the company’s network.

The insurance company conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the breach and traced the intrusion back to the Nest device. As a result, they sought to hold the integrator accountable for the security lapse. Fortunately, he had cybersecurity insurance, which provided a layer of protection in this case.

While there was some payout from the insurance, the incident highlighted the critical importance of cybersecurity measures, especially in an age where many devices are connected. The integrator, who only intended to help the business owner create a more comfortable home environment during COVID – by installing the Nest thermostat and a flat-screen TV so he could video conference with his employees – learned a tough lesson about the vulnerabilities associated with modern technology. It was a stark reminder that even a small oversight can lead to significant consequences.

Don’t wait until it’s too late

In the US, only 17% of businesses have cybersecurity insurance, and of these, 48% did not purchase this level of insurance until after their first attack. By waiting until this happens, your rate will be higher.

Business owners will say, ‘this isn’t going to happen to me – it’s someone else’s problem,’ but no, it’s really our problem here and now. Nearly a third of attacks happen to companies that have less than 100 employees.

If you are an integration company, then it is a nobrainer, you have to have cybersecurity insurance. Business owners may think, ‘well, I already have insurance, so I’m covered.’ No, this isn’t the case –general liability doesn’t cover this sort of thing. Your insurance needs to include technology errors and omissions and cyber, and these have to be packaged together. Also, look into including prior acts coverage, so that you can’t be liable for a breach in a system that you installed 15-20 years ago.

THE PHYSIOLOGY OF

Lighting has taken center stage in the smart home world as designers and integrators realize the impact it has on human physiology.

A recent CEDIA Podcast hosted by Walt Zerbe, Senior Director of Technology and Standards at CEDIA, brought together three lighting experts to discuss this transformative aspect of lighting: LaDonna Eriksen, Founding Partner at Construction Education Consortium; Andy Bull, Director of Design at Lighting Audio Video Projects; and Bruce Clarke, Founding Lighting Sherpa with Kaleidolight Lighting Design. Together, they explored the powerful ways light affects our bodies, its implications on home design, and the future of lighting technology.

Our homes and workplaces often lack natural daylight, and we’re suffering for it – We’re like grass that needs sunlight to thrive. Without it, we wither.

REDEFINING HUMAN-CENTRIC LIGHTING

Andy opened the discussion by sharing how the concept of “humancentric lighting” has evolved over the past few years. While this term initially emphasized lighting comfort and visual needs, recent discoveries have shifted the focus toward biological effects. Andy shared insights from his experience with CEDIA, stressing the need for continuously updating lighting design courses to incorporate the latest research and advancements.

Andy explained that lighting in homes and workplaces typically stays between 100 and 500 lux, well below the natural outdoor light exposure that humans evolved with. This discrepancy is significant because light plays an important role in regulating bodily processes. He recounted a hospital project in Manchester where color-tunable lighting simulated natural light cycles improved both staff wellbeing and patient recovery. “It’s about simulating a more natural light experience to benefit the environment in ways we’re only beginning to understand,” he explained.

THE HISTORICAL DISRUPTION OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT

LaDonna took a step back to examine the broader evolutionary context, explaining that humans developed under the rhythms of

sunlight for over 20 million years. “Suddenly, 150 years ago, we were thrown into artificial light.” This shift altered our exposure to natural light cycles, which has had adverse health consequences, and the reduced exposure to sunlight has been linked to increased rates of diabetes, immune disorders, and even cancer.

Modern artificial lighting does not provide the spectrum of light that helps regulate our circadian rhythm, which is the internal clock that controls sleep and wake cycles. LaDonna explained that a specific wavelength, around 480 nanometers, is essential for this regulation. Artificial light can disrupt this process by blocking the production of melatonin, a hormone crucial for sleep. “Our homes and workplaces often lack natural daylight, and we’re suffering for it,” she noted. “We’re like grass that needs sunlight to thrive. Without it, we wither.”

LaDonna urged the industry to prioritize research to develop healthier lighting options. She highlighted that while aesthetically pleasing lighting is valued in design, the popular “pleasing look” could be detrimental to health. “The information is out there, but it’s buried in scientific research. It’s time we bring it to the forefront.”

A NEW APPROACH

Bruce took the discussion into the technical realm, emphasizing the need for lighting systems that mimic the spectral qualities of natural light. He pointed out that industry standards have typically focused on luminous intensity, such as lux levels and color temperature. However, Bruce suggested that focusing solely on brightness and color is insufficient for designing lights that truly align with human biology.

“Just as sound has both low and high frequencies that shape what we hear, light has a

spectrum that affects how we respond to it biologically,” Bruce explained. In lighting, this concept is known as spectral power distribution (SPD), which measures the intensity of each wavelength. By simulating the SPD of natural sunlight, lighting systems can better support human health.

The solution, Bruce suggested, lies in collaboration. Lighting designers, architects, and smart home professionals must work together to create holistic solutions that address both visual appeal and physiological needs.

A HEALTHIER LIGHTING FUTURE

The smart home industry has a clear opportunity to advance lighting technology that better aligns with human biology. As LaDonna pointed out, “Our bodies need natural light to thrive. Artificial light just doesn’t cut it.” While natural daylight is the ideal, areas without it can benefit from lighting that closely mimics the full daylight spectrum.

Andy, LaDonna, and Bruce agreed

that industry shifts are essential to lessen the impact of artificial lighting on health. They highlighted the importance of ongoing education and awareness, encouraging designers and homeowners to view lighting not only as an aesthetic choice but also as a factor in wellbeing.

By leveraging lighting technology thoughtfully, the smart home industry can create spaces that support both function and health. With an informed approach and collaboration, lighting can serve as more than a functional element, contributing meaningfully to wellbeing in modern living spaces.

Excellent Use Case for CEDIA NextGen CEDIA SPOTLIGHT

Targeting Future Talent for the Smart Home Industry

Over the last two years, CEDIA has put workforce development at the top of the agenda – looking for ways in which to find and educate new industry talent.

Findings from CEDIA’s 2023 Professional Smart Home Market Analysis highlighted the scale of the challenge, with nearly half of participants in the UK and two-thirds of participants in the US indicating that workforce and labor shortages are impacting their businesses. Similar challenges were reported in Australia and New Zealand, where skill shortages remain a key challenge.

CEDIA is tackling this issue as much as possible in several regions around the world. In the UK, one example stands out as leading the way for targeting future talent for the industry. This is CEDIA’s collaboration with the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, where the aim is to excite young people about a potential career in the smart home industry.

CEDIA, BAKER DEARING, AND UTC JOIN FORCES

The Baker Dearing Educational Trust advances and informs high-quality, employer-led technical education and supports its delivery through England’s 44-strong program of University Technical Colleges (UTCs). The Trust works with UTCs – which are government-funded schools with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) or creative media focus – major employers, political leaders, and the wider education sector to deliver the best outcomes for young people.

Recognizing the opportunity, CEDIA invited Baker Dearing representatives and UTC students to attend CEDIA Tech + Business Summits and ISE. This provided them with an introduction to the industry, to meet with CEDIA members, and get hands on with technology.

Ayeesha Bhamji, Project Coordinator at Baker Dearing, commented: “The benefit of the relationship between us and CEDIA is the

CEDIA and Baker Dearing visit UTC Derby Pride Park

connection with employers in the smart home industry. We have many students studying engineering or computer science, and CEDIA connects them with relevant employers. Together, we align our efforts so CEDIA members can access skilled students, and we can provide our learners with valuable career pathways that they might not have even considered before. We plan to send more students to the next CEDIA Tech + Business Summits and ISE 2025, as the previous years’ experiences were incredibly valuable for them.”

INTRODUCING CEDIA NEXTGEN TECH KITS

As part of this collaboration, CEDIA worked with James Ratcliffe, CEDIA Board Member and Managing Director of Homeplay, to create NextGen Tech Kits. These kits allow students hands-on experience with some of the tech that the industry works with on a daily basis. Thanks to the support of CEDIA trade supplier members who kindly contributed over £10,000 worth of equipment, users are able to push a doorbell and hear it play a tune through the speaker, speak to a virtual assistant for the blind to close, or push a button on a keypad for the lighting to switch on. These kits are getting the students excited by the prospect of a career in the industry.

UTC DERBY PRIDE PARK

In November 2024, CEDIA visited UTC Derby Pride Park where the team spoke to the students to generate excitement about the smart home industry and encourage them to consider the career opportunities that are available within this market.

Ahead of the talk, the students had six weeks to play around with the NextGen Tech Kits, which enabled them to engage actively during the session.

“We were fortunate enough to have the NextGen Kits for over a month, which provided us with the opportunity for existing students to use them as part of the Engineering Programmable Systems course, and for us to use the kits during our open morning for over 800 prospective students and parents,” comments Kerry Warburton | Careers Lead & Employer Engagement Co-Ordinator at UTC Derby Pride Park. “The kits allowed our students to familiarize themselves with what smart technology is, but to also delve deeper and consider the technology that is behind these products. This led us to the conversation about whether they see this as a future career pathway and which area they are interested – design, programming, or installation. Our students are very inquisitive, and these kits really piqued their interest into the world of smart home technology.”

This initiative aims to make a lasting impact. The next UTC that is interested in receiving the NextGen Tech Kits is Scarborough University Technical College. With this and 42 other schools to visit, CEDIA will be looking to engage with local members to support this initiative..

For anyone who is interested in engaging with this program in the UK, contact the CEDIA office on +44 (0)1480 213744.

Building Recognition for the Industry

A

ll of the key issues facing our industry lead us back to one fundamental challenge – that of recognition.

Many integrators will say that growing their workforce is their biggest headache and that they struggle to recruit talent. Well, it’s very difficult to recruit talent if young people don’t know this industry exists.

Other integrators tell us that it’s a problem that they’re not at the table with other professions at the beginning of the project. That’s a recognition problem. Another area of concern is that new entrants in the workplace may be ill-equipped to be integrators, using untrained labor to do poor quality work. That impacts on all of us because it brings down the reputation of this industry. This happens because consumers don’t ask the people who come into their homes if they’re trained or certified. Again, this is a problem of recognition.

Clearly, recognition is a major challenge facing our industry. And it’s a problem that CEDIA is determined to solve. We’re tackling the issue head on in multiple ways.

TARGETING CONSUMERS

Firstly, with consumers. We’ve embarked on a major, multifaceted consumer campaign. Part of it is public relations which will see us getting in front of the consumer to say if you want to do these projects, don’t do it yourself. Don’t hire an amateur. Hire a professional integrator. And those publications will link back to CEDIA and direct people to our finder service.

The second phase of this campaign is SEO. People when they’re searching online to find how they can design and build a smart home will find CEDIA. They’ll find that our members can deliver such projects professionally, and we will build connections between consumer and integrator.

We’ve also created a TV commercial, an ad designed specifically for consumers to understand why they need an integrator and the benefits of using a CEDIA professional. We’ll be using this commercial in specific territories, as well as making it available to our members. So, in addition to having a commercial with CEDIA as the call to action at its close, there will be a version that members can use that will have their logo and their contact information at the end. This version can be hosted on a member’s website or used on social media. We will be making

that video widely available to all CEDIA members, free of charge.

REACHING DESIGN AND BUILD PROS

Next, we’re making good progress in the design and build community. It’s our ambition to have everybody in all of these adjacent industries understand the importance of the work of our members. In the US in recent months, I’ve been meeting with my counterparts at all of the other trade associations in these areas. The CEOs of these massive associations, they get it. They know their future is dependent on our members, but their members don’t necessarily know that. And so, we’re working together with them to develop new programs with the National Association of Homebuilders, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) so that we can get this at scale and make sure everybody in the design and build community knows the importance of using an integrator. We plan to build on these successes and implement these programs across the EMEA region too.

ADVOCATING FOR THE INDUSTRY

• USA

In the US, CEDIA has filed comments with the United States government to advocate for the establishment of the Technology Integrators occupational code. By doing so, CEDIA aims to ensure that the professional contributions of Technology Integrators are accurately recognized and classified. In addition to submitting comments to the Standard Occupational Classification Policy Committee (SOCPC), CEDIA worked with Congress to submit a letter of support for this initiative and to bring greater awareness to the government agency about the importance of establishing a separate occupational code for Technology Integrators.

Representatives, Michael Cogbill and Ken Erdmann of CEDIA’s Code-Making Panel 3 have been integral in reviewing changes and submissions to the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code® (NEC). During a series of meetings, the pair provided valuable feedback on several proposed updates, including those related to limited energy systems. Even small changes to the NEC can significantly impact the work of Technology Integrators, making it crucial to have a proactive voice in these discussions.

CEDIA is preparing to contribute to revisions to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a standardized system for categorizing business establishments. In December 2024, the Federal Register solicited proposals for updates to NAICS codes for 2027, and CEDIA has developed strategies to advocate for adjustments supporting limited energy systems contractors. These updates will enhance data reporting and classification for Technology Integrators, offering a clearer representation of their role in the smart home sector.

In July 2024, key provisions from the “Freedom To Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act” were included in the “Education and Workforce Freedom Act” passed by the House Ways and Means Committee. These provisions will broaden the scope of qualified expenses under 529 savings plans to include post-secondary training and credentialing for workers of all educational backgrounds and skill levels. In 2025, CEDIA plans to continue advocating for legislation that supports access to education for the smart home industry.

• UK

if you want to do these projects, don’t do it yourself. Don’t hire an amateur. Hire a professional integrator.

In the UK, the National Careers Service is a publicly funded resource that provides high-quality, free, and impartial careers advice, information, and guidance to adults and young people across England. Their website includes a career exploration section with a searchable database of job titles. However, with 800 profiles available, there was a noticeable absence of roles related to our industry, such as security installer, AV technician, or smart meter installer. To address

CEDIA developing relationships with design and build professionals.

this, we collaborated with a small group of UK integrators, led by board member, James Ratcliffe, along with CEDIA MD of EMEA, Matt Nimmons, to develop a submission for the role of smart home installer.

We’re delighted to announce that the job title “Smart Home Installer” is now live on the site. This listing includes details on salary, daily responsibilities, references to CEDIA credentials (CIT/ IST), and apprenticeship opportunities and represents a significant step forward in recognition, elevating our industry and showcasing viable career paths.

Additionally, CEDIA is in the process of establishing a UK Government Affairs Committee to amplify advocacy efforts and engage directly with policymakers on issues affecting the industry. To further support its members, CEDIA joined TechUK, a prominent technology association, ensuring members stay informed on key developments in the region.

• APAC

In the APAC region, CEDIA has submitted proposals in Australia and New Zealand for the recognition of “Smart Home Technology Integrator” as an official occupation. Australia is preparing to finalize its Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA),

Currently, our industry is inaccurately categorized as a subset of the electrical trade, and we are working to correct this misclassification.

formerly ANZSCO, where CEDIA’s submission awaits review. New Zealand’s separate classification updates are also forthcoming, marking the first time either country may approve integrator recognition independently.

Now all of these activities in consumer, design and build, and government are not going to be quick wins. They’re not going to be easy and they’re not going to be cheap. But we have a board of directors at CEDIA who have committed the resources to achieve our goals on recognition. We urge the industry to support us on this initiative and work with us on these activities as we lead the charge in gaining more recognition globally for the professional smart home industry.

CEDIA board members, executives, and industry leaders attending the inaugural CEDIA Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill

It’s important for everyone to have the opportunity to be in control of their lives, and to be able to enjoy their living environment. For disabled and elderly people, this can be a challenge. But it doesn’t always have to be. With the use of smart home technology, this group can take back control and live more independently, which in turn, also helps to reduce financial pressures on the social care system.

Here are two examples of assisted living installs that CEDIA members have recently worked on. These two projects are set in two very different environments and had diverse objectives in mind, but both pave the way for what smart home professionals can achieve in this sector.

Assisted Living The Untapped Market for Smart Home Professionals

CEDIA AWARD-WINNING ASSISTED LIVING PROJECT –NO COAL STREET

A sanctuary of innovation and freedom emerges in Newcastle, Australia, where Custom Integration and Electrical, Derive Architecture & Design, and Harrison Building and Carpentry have transformed a residence into a model of accessible living. This project redefines the interplay between architecture and technology, demonstrating that a home can significantly empower its residents.

The transformation is centred around Stewart, a resident living with progressive multiple sclerosis. His daily challenges and restrictions formed the foundation for his forever home. Previously constrained by his physical environment, Stewart envisaged a

residence where technology would restore his autonomy. The home allows him to control lights, doors, curtains, and even the lift with a simple touch on his smartphone, revolutionising his interaction with his living space.

The ground floor is dedicated to Stewart, featuring accessible living, dining, and kitchen areas that integrate seamlessly into the outdoor garden spaces that are vital to his lifestyle. Motorised doors and windows, a bespoke lift interface, and sophisticated control systems allow him to navigate his residence independently. These systems are intricately tied to both the functional and emotional aspects of the home, enhancing daily life through programmed lighting scenes that illuminate their art and create ambiance throughout the space.

Beyond functionality, the technology serves as a lifeline. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTH & CARE ENVIRONMENTS

As part of the UK Government ‘Local Skills Improvement Fund’ initiative, CEDIA member, Automated Spaces, was awarded a contract to create a ‘first of its kind in the world’ demonstration space to showcase what’s possible with regards to independent living technologies in six separate Further Education Colleges in Kent and Medway.

The demonstration spaces incorporate Automated Spaces’ unique approach of combining smart home solutions and a connected care platform to proactively assist people to live independently. They provide an immersive environment that allows students to learn increasingly critical skills in the healthcare sector and visitors to be shown this new ‘Evolution of Independent Living Technologies’.

The spaces have initially been created to highlight the positive outcomes that can be provided across three specific scenarios:

1. Person living at home with dementia

2. Residential care setting

3. Sheltered housing

There is a wide array of independent living technology solutions included in the spaces; from a variety of manufacturers of home automation solutions to a connected care platform providing healthcare monitoring and insights.

The integration of these demonstration spaces marks a significant step forward in bridging education and real-world application. By allowing students to engage with cutting-edge

in the Health & Social Care sector in the region, including the NHS, Home Improvement Agencies, Housing Associations, Care Home, and Sheltered Housing providers. Some 350 students are expected to benefit from these facilities per year.

“We are really excited to be part of this innovative project to help train the next generation of Health & Care professionals,” comments Alan Matthews, Managing Director

The adaptive AV system caters to Stewart’s background in film and television, offering not just entertainment but an immersive experience tailored to his preferences.

independent living technologies, the colleges are preparing them to meet the demands of modern care environments and to champion innovative, person-centred solutions.

The colleges are also opening the demonstration spaces to stakeholders

of Automated Spaces. “We’re looking forward to receiving the feedback from the students and staff using the demonstration suites to see if there are any further enhancements that can be made.”

Experience Monitor Audio Climate Series 3G at ISE

Monitor Audio Group is proud to be presenting for the first time, the all-new, all-weather, Climate Series 3G. Designed to deliver an enhanced audio experience, outside or in.

High-fidelity performance, outside, or in.

Designed for when superior sound is required in any environment, the all-new Climate Series 3G features two contemporary designs: a ‘small’ 4-inch and ‘medium’ 6-inch design. Both highly versatile designs can withstand the toughest of outdoor environments, satisfying a demanding IP66 rating.

Climate Series 3G is a product of the Group’s Transparent Design Philosophy.

Monitor Audio Group believe that high-fidelity products should be capable of producing sound as laid down by the artist so accurately that it becomes transparent. The physical design should be sympathetic to this in any

environment and work in harmony with the desire for transparency.

Every Monitor Audio Group product is the result of intense collaboration, drawing on decades of experience within the design team and ensuring that all the elements of performance, technology and design work in harmony.

High-fidelity innovation built inside for outside.

To ensure Climate Series 3G stays at its best for many years, outside and in all weather conditions, Monitor Audio’s design team created a completely sealed cabinet enclosure.

Weatherproof enclosure: A one-piece moulded cabinet, made from dense ABS and reinforced with glass-fibre, protects the important elements within for a lifetime of

use. A large Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR) and fully sealed front baffle housing the drive units, ensure the whole design can withstand the harshest of weather conditions.

IP66 rated: After many hundreds of tests, to ensure there are no critical errors, Climate Series 3G received an IP66 rating, among the highest of weatherproof test results. This means users can deploy the hardy speakers with confidence that they will enjoy a lifetime of high-fidelity sound.

Quik-Link inspired connection system: Taking inspiration from Monito Audio’s Creator Series, the ‘kettle-style’ Quik-Link connection system is sealed away from the elements and robust in design. The diecast wall bracket offers total versatility with placement and positioning, along with refreshingly quick and easy speaker installation.

Delivering speed and versatility of installation. Inspired by Creator Series.

Climate Series 3G uses an ingenious die-cast aluminium bracket. Lightweight, yet incredibly strong, its intuitive design allows the range’s two models to be positioned almost anywhere, with the minimum of hassle.

Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR): Both Climate Small and Climate Medium utilise an Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR) design. Taking up almost the entire rear of each speaker, the large ABR extends bass performance, allowing for a weighty but controlled low-end performance, ideal for use outside.

Tweeter: Monitor Audio’s gold domed tweeter has been continually developed since it first appeared in 1988. Constant refinement has made it a precision instrument, capable of delivering clarity, realism and detail. It helps Climate Series 3G deliver the pristine clarity expected of the best premium speakers for inside, outside.

New crossover design: Climate Series 3G’s crossovers have been optimised for indoor and outdoor use. Ensuring that the frequencies are delivered efficiently to the drive units for total acoustics performance.

Inspired by Monitor Audio’s patented Quik-Link connector, found on the architectural Creator Series, the new system enables the speaker bracket to be pre-fitted to a wall, in either the vertical or horizontal plain. Speaker cables can be prefitted to the internal speaker connectors that are within the bracket itself – all neatly hidden inside and behind protective rubber seals to prevent ingress from the elements.

Once positioned in its optimum location over the ‘kettlelike’ connector, a single substantial bolt secures the speaker in its desired position and holds it securely in place.

The bracket design allows a Climate Series 3G speaker to be rotated through 180 degrees in both the vertical and horizontal plane – so it can be ‘aimed’ into the desired location, whether that’s in a restaurant, commercial space, or outdoor patio.

How to tell if your clients ARE right for you!

In the smart home industry, we often focus on helping homeowners find the perfect integrator to bring their vision to life. But what about the other side of the equation? How do integrators identify and connect with the right clients – those who align with their expertise, value their craft, and foster rewarding partnerships?

Here, we talk to five CEDIA members to find out how they go about finding new clients and then making sure that they match well together.

Dennis Lundell

What tools do clients typically use to find your business?

DENNIS: Most of our customers find us through recommendations and referrals from previous clients and collaborators, such as architects, interior designers, electricians, and builders. We’ve noticed that our presence on social media, especially on Instagram, helps strengthen our brand and reach new clients. We also participate in and host events, which is an effective way to create new connections within and beyond our industry.

JESSE: We are just beginning to explore marketing strategies for specific services. However, most of our customers find us through referrals from past clients, builders, and interior designers. We also maintain active social media pages where we regularly share photos and videos to showcase our work.

SCOTT: Building strong relationships is at the heart of our business. Referrals from architects, designers, builders, and clients often lead us to the most rewarding projects. Direct outreach, consistent communication with trade partners, and exceptional customer service are fundamental to our success. All our marketing efforts are designed to support these highlevel initiatives. From maintaining and evolving our brand and website to organizing events, facilitating partner and manufacturer travel, creating case studies, and managing social media – every endeavor reinforces our commitment to excellence and collaboration.

How important is the initial engagement and communication with a prospective client?

DENNIS : The first communication with a

customer is extremely important. Here, we lay the foundation for a long-term partnership and get an initial sense of what the customer needs and expects. By asking the right questions and carefully listening to their goals, we can establish trust and offer a first glimpse into how we work.

ADAM: How you communicate in the first few interactions sets the tone for the entire relationship. Clients are evaluating your professionalism, responsiveness, and ability to listen and understand their needs. Quick, clear communication not only builds trust but also demonstrates your commitment to customer service. At this stage, it’s important to be approachable, professional, and thorough – showing that you value their time and are capable of delivering what they’re looking for. We see our success rate soar when we can get clients into one of our experience centers. In contrast, when we don’t get that face-to-face meeting with a client and they don’t get to see our technology solutions in person, our success rate is considerably lower.

SCOTT: First impressions are everything, but maintaining meaningful engagement is just as crucial. We strive to show our clients that we value them and are committed to being with them every step of the way. At the heart of what we do is more than just integrating cutting-edge technology – it’s about enhancing lifestyles. Our goal is to create seamless solutions that elevate how our clients live. They are the ones who interact with the technology and it’s our responsibility to ensure it’s the best possible fit for them.

How should integrators handle the initial meeting with the client?

BRENDON : Develop a system and refine it as you go – we use a D365 meeting agenda for this. We always talk through plans and I ask a lot of questions, tell stories about past clients that were in similar situations, and bounce a price off them early (we have an instant online quoting tool for this).

ADAM: The initial meeting is an opportunity to build rapport and set the stage for a successful collaboration. To put it simply, we always ask the same question ‘How do you want to live in your home?’ We start by listening to the client’s needs and desires without

interrupting – understanding their vision is key to proposing the right solutions. We ask clarifying questions to make sure we understand the scope and the “why” behind their requests. We manage expectations by being transparent about what can and can’t be done within their budget and timeline, which helps them understand the realistic outcomes. Lastly, we offer solutions based on their needs and provide initial thoughts or ideas that demonstrate our expertise, while avoiding overwhelming them with too much technical jargon.

JESSE : Preparation is key. Before the meeting, I review the plans and brainstorm various possibilities and scenarios. While I may not always have a solution upfront, I make sure to have ideas ready. It’s important to approach the meeting with respect and avoid being overly sales focused. Building trust and a genuine relationship with the client is essential. I also stress to my team during the wiring stage that installations should be planned for future maintenance. We aim to be the contractor they rely on for upgrades, so creating long-term relationships is a goal of ours at the start of our approach.

Do you always meet face-to-face and, if that’s not possible, what should you do?

BRENDON : We try to insist on face-to-face meetings, as dropping back to online or email reduces the conversion by 50%. People buy from people they trust and that’s a whole lot easier in person.

How you communicate in the first few interactions sets the tone for the entire relationship.

Look for clear, open communication and engagement, with enthusiasm for their vision and an openness to your insights.

JESSE: We generally try to arrange consultations in our showroom, but that’s not always possible. In those cases, we meet at the client’s home or at the project site. We’ve also had successful meetings over the phone via Facetime and Zoom for clients based overseas or interstate.

SCOTT: Whenever possible, meeting faceto-face is invaluable. It allows for a deeper connection, clearer communication, and a better understanding of the client’s needs and vision. However, if an in-person meeting isn’t feasible, it’s essential to prioritize clear, effective communication through virtual means, such as video calls. This ensures a personal touch and creates an opportunity to build rapport, even when distance is a factor.

What do you aim to find out at this point to identify if this will be a good fit for your business and skill sets?

DENNIS: We explore the customer’s needs and vision, the scope of the project, whether any architect or interior designer is involved, and the timeline. It’s also important for us to understand their interest in design and technology. This ensures that we can add value, meet, and exceed the customer’s expectations. If their project and goals align with our expertise and values, the partnership feels natural.

BRENDON: We aim to find out who the decision makers are, what their understanding of tech is, the makeup of the family, what type of devices they currently use, where the job is, and what is being spent on the property.

ADAM : I aim to understand the scope of the project and whether it aligns with my expertise. Some key things to assess include budget, timeline, client’s expectations, project complexity, and compatibility. By gauging these aspects early on, you can quickly determine if the project is something you can deliver successfully and whether the client will be easy to work with.

What

are the warning signs that it won’t work?

ADAM: Unrealistic expectations – if client has a vastly inflated idea of what they can achieve within their budget or timeframe, it’s a red flag. If you’re struggling to get clear answers or the client is vague about their needs, it’s a sign they might not be ready to move forward or they may have unclear goals. Lastly, a client who continually alters the project scope without a clear understanding of the impact on cost or timeline could lead to scope creep and frustration.

JESSE: One red flag is when a client appears disengaged, particularly if they’ve attended multiple consultations and are either overwhelmed or solely focused on finding the cheapest option. Another indicator is when a client seems fixated on solutions provided by others and is resistant to alternative ideas or recommendations we propose.

SCOTT: Misalignment between the client’s vision or project goals and our expertise or values can signal challenges. Poor communication, such as difficulty establishing clear dialogue or a lack of responsiveness, and a disregard

for collaboration, where clients are unwilling to consider professional recommendations, further hinder progress. Additionally, an undefined scope or timeline, marked by ambiguity around project details, priorities, or deadlines, makes it difficult to set clear deliverables. Finally, when clients focus solely on price rather than quality, service, and long-term value, it indicates a mismatch in priorities and approach.

What are the positive signs that it will work?

DENNIS: When the customer is engaged, has a clear vision, and is open to transparent dialogue. We also appreciate it when the customer expresses an interest in quality and long-term solutions, as this reflects our own values.

BRENDON: Expanding scope, and being invited to meet with other stakeholders, especially architects and interior designers.

ADAM: The client trusts your experience and is receptive to your recommendations, understanding that you’re the expert in this space and respecting your process. A collaborative attitude is a great sign – when the client is engaged and willing to communicate openly. This indicates they value your input and want a partnership, not just a transaction. It’s a good indicator when the client’s realistic expectations are in line with the project’s scope, and they understand the technical and financial constraints.

What clues can you pick up from this face-to-face meeting on whether the client is or isn’t right for you?

DENNIS: We can get a sense of their commitment and attitude toward quality through body language, tone of voice, and how the customer talks about their project. If the customer shows interest in detail, is curious about the technology, and asks questions about our solutions, it often indicates a good match for our services and way of working.

BRENDON: Looking down, away from you, closed body language, arms over chest, and leaning back in chair are not great signs. If they are at ease, relaxed, chatty, and engaged, you feel more confident about it going well.

SCOTT: Look for clear, open communication and engagement, with enthusiasm for their vision and an openness to your insights. Ensure their goals, budget, and project scope align with your expertise. A willingness to collaborate and trust in your recommendations is a good sign, while resistance or a controlling attitude may signal challenges. Finally, assess whether they value quality and long-term outcomes, or are focused on cost-cutting. These cues, along with your intuition, can help determine if the partnership will thrive.

Another encouraging moment is when a client becomes genuinely excited about a solution we present, especially when it’s something they hadn’t considered before.

JESSE: A positive sign is when there’s a natural rapport like sharing a laugh or feeling like you’ve known each other for a while. Another encouraging moment is when a client becomes genuinely excited about a solution we present, especially when it’s something they hadn’t considered before. For instance, we recently had a consultation that started as a simple electrical design. After showing the clients through our showroom and explaining the possibilities of automating different solutions, he sat with his head in his hands, saying, “I know this will add to the budget, but I need this in our home.” Moments like these demonstrate alignment and shared vision.

KINGS

INTEGRATOR COMPANY: DENOTE CATEGORY: BEST INTEGRATED HOME

As the first rays of the Australian sun pierce through the morning haze, a masterpiece of modern living rises proudly in Sydney’s prestigious eastern suburbs. The newly rebuilt family residence, known as ‘Kings’, epitomizes luxury and cutting-edge technology, harmoniously blending architectural elegance with the ultimate in smart home integration. The visionary minds behind this project include Andrew Tzannes from Smith & Tzannes as the architect and Brendon Wong Design crafting the exquisite interiors.

The journey to create Kings was as intricate as it was ambitious. Denote, the integrator behind this marvel, was

tasked with transforming the residence into a technologically advanced sanctuary, where every system — from lighting to HVAC control — works seamlessly under one overarching control system. This wasn’t merely about convenience; it was about creating a living space that catered to the client’s professional and personal needs, ensuring both security and high performance.

The client, a radiologist with a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for technology, had specific requirements. With a career that involves dealing with sensitive patient records, network security was paramount. Denote employed Fortinet’s high-level security features, offering real-time threat assessment and a fully managed network that ensured peace of mind. This

“” IN KINGS, EVERY TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCE AND ARCHITECTURAL DECISION CONVERGES TO CREATE A SPACE THAT DOES MORE THAN HOUSE ITS INHABITANTS — IT ENHANCES THEIR DAILY LIVES.

enterprise-grade network, fortified with multiple virtual local area networks (VLANs) and a 2.5G firewall, was meticulously designed to meet stringent security standards. The entire system, licensed and managed, provides robust protection while maintaining optimal performance.

But security was just one aspect of the project. The client’s passion for technology meant they were deeply involved in the planning process. Numerous consultations were held to explore the possibilities of each subsystem, eventually leading to the decision to integrate them all into a single, intuitive Savant interface. This choice was solidified after touring homes showcasing various smart home options, with the client drawn to Savant’s user-friendly design and robust performance.

The challenge of incorporating satellite television into the sleek cabinetry design was elegantly overcome with Savant’s VoIP solution, ensuring high-quality picture performance without compromising the room’s aesthetics. This attention to detail extended to every corner of the home, from the high-performance audio systems in the living room and gym, featuring Meridian Audio loudspeakers, to the carefully calibrated displays that met the exacting standards of the client’s radiologist-trained eye.

Kings is not just a home; it’s a hub of high-end audio-visual experiences. The outdoor terrace, with its beautifully integrated audio system concealed within custom-designed pots, offers an immersive sound experience without detracting from the architectural beauty. The integration of the client’s Bösendorfer grand piano into the home’s audio system exemplifies the project’s commitment to blending luxury with functionality.

Given the family’s diverse needs, the system was designed to be effortlessly operable by everyone, from young children to grandparents. Denote’s solution included multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs) with varying levels of access, ensuring

the children’s internet usage was safe and appropriately filtered. The Wi-Fi shutdown schedule further demonstrated the thoughtful consideration of the family’s well-being.

Management of the home’s extensive technology suite was another crucial aspect. The client, with a demanding professional life, required a system that operated flawlessly with minimal intervention. Denote’s comprehensive remote management package, bolstered by a service level agreement, ensured that all systems, licences, and subscriptions were maintained seamlessly, freeing the client from the minutiae of technological upkeep.

In Kings, every technological advance and architectural decision converges to create a space that does more than house its inhabitants — it enhances their daily lives. This project is not just about the technical specifications or the high-end installations; it’s about crafting a space where each day is lived to the fullest amidst sophisticated, secure, and effortlessly operable surroundings.

Open to members and available to non-members for a fee, this segment includes two self-paced, one-hour modules on CEDIA’s Academy platform, designed to develop skills in preparing impactful presentations and enhancing communication skills. This foundational module isn’t strictly tied to design-build principles; instead, it offers techniques for tailoring outreach strategies to various professional settings, helping participants identify and address audience interests to create presentations that resonate.

• Part B: Instructor-Led Virtual Training

Exclusively for members, Part B delves into designbuild expertise. This two-hour, instructor-led virtual session provides insights into effectively targeting, profiling, and collaborating with architects, interior designers, and builders based on the global region the course is being taken in. Participants will utilize the CEDIA Design Build Outreach business plan to enhance engagement strategies, learn and discuss the roles of associations like RIBA and AIA, and gain tips on effective networking practices — including how to leverage social media platforms.

This newly streamlined, four-hour program is an exclusive benefit for company members and is now accessible across America, APAC, and EMEA to help CEDIA members develop essential skills to use in the design and build industry.

UNLOCKING NEW BENEFITS

The rebranding of the Design Build Program aims to make its benefits clearer for members by emphasizing the collaborative design-build process. The program’s primary goal is to grant participants the title of CEDIA Smart Home Continuing Education Provider, enabling them to offer CEU/CPD credits to their local design and build partners — a valuable advantage for professional growth and enriched credibility among peers and clients.
