pril has been a very excited month for McLaren Newport Beach filled with various events ranging from the Formula One viewings and the McLaren 650S Unveiling in our showroom to an incredible display at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. The reception of the brand new McLaren 650S has been extremely positive. If you haven’t had a chance to get a closer look at it yet, stop by our showroom and test drive our Spider version! Between the deliveries of the first McLaren 650S and our Azure Blue McLaren P1, we found the time to hold a very exclusive Customer Appreciation Dinner, where our clients had a chance to meet with Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive. We were also in the pits to support the K-Pax team at the Long Beach Grand Prix weekend, competing with two McLaren 12C GT3 in the Pirelli World Challenge. Interested in racing? THE McLAREN
12C GT SPRINT
McLAREN GT McLaren GT is the race car manufacturing of McLaren Group established to develop, build and support the GT racing and track derivatives of the 12C sports car. Based in Woking, Surrey at the former home of McLaren Racing, the company is responsible for the design, development and production of the successful 12C GT3 race car, the 12C GT Can-Am Edition and the GT Sprint.
12C GT SPRINT The McLaren GT Sprint is a new high performance track only variant of the 12C production car. Designed and developed by McLaren GT the car retains many of the 12C’s unique systems such as proactive chassis control, brake steer and active air brake, honed to deliver a true GT racing experience. Pirelli racing slick tires, recalibrated proactive chassis control system (damping & roll stiffness), lowered ride height, reduced weight and enhanced aerodynamics all contribute to significant lap time improvements.
CARBON MONOCELL
POWERTRAIN
Retaining the same ground-breaking carbon fibre monocell from the standard road car, the GT Sprint needs to incorporate a rollcage which complies with the FIA regulations, this further enhances its’ torsional rigidity whilst utilising McLaren GT’s obsession with weight reduction. The GT Sprint carbon fibre monocell is combined with unique lightweight composite body panels which include front bumper, bonnet and quarter-light panels incorporating motorsport fuel fillers. A motorsport air-jack system has also been introduced to maximise pit-stop timing.
The powertrain is also maintained utilising the 3.8 litre V8 twin turbo, with revised calibration producing 625hp and 600Nm of torque along with the McLaren seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox which all contributes towards keeping running costs down without compromising power and performance. Additionally, we have taken key performance data from our GT3 experience, and improved the cooling capability, housing an additional centre-mounted radiator and ducting which satisfies the demands required from the power unit in a race environment.

SUSPENSION, WHEELS & TIRES The GT Sprint maintains the pioneering Proactive Chassis Control system from the roadcar; the hydraulically interconnected suspension system absorbs impacts whilst maintaining roll stiffness, giving the driver an uncompromised drive. To further enhance the system for the track in the GT Sprint, has recalibrated the adaptive damping and roll stiffness by the introduction of
ELECTRICAL Further synergy with the GT3 race car includes the wiring harness, and FIA specification electrical master switch powered by a motorsport battery. To assist and develop the driver, a motorsport data acquisition system is also fitted, providing feedback such as GPS, timing, video and telemetry.
BRAKES The braking system is paramount in any high-performance track car, so GT Sprint takes advantage of motorsport iron discs fitted to bespoke GT Sprint disc bells and motorsport developed endurance GT brake pads. With further cooling through carbon fibre ducting front and rear and utilising the road-going car CCM brake calipers optimises both feel and capability whilst maintaining durability of the braking system.

Finally, the 19� race centre-lock wheels are fitted with Pirelli competition tires or wet weather tires developed for the car’s performance along with its optional focused aerodynamics package, all contributing to optimised handling and significant lap time improvements when compared to its road going counterpart.
INTERIOR The interior of the 12C GT Sprint combines sparse race functionality and safety with a little comfort. The lightweight carbon fibre dash houses the race developed digital display and key vehicle controls which interface with a McLaren GT developed steering wheel. A HANS approved carbon composite racing seat with full sixpoint harness provides the optimum driving position, with full adjustment for driver preference. A lightweight air conditioning system is retained to add a touch of racer comfort.

U
nveiled in Geneva, the McLaren 650S improves on an already remarkable MP4-12C. The 650S Coupe and Spider share the same Carbon Fiber tub which provides an extremely rigid chassis, a perfect platform for building the ideal super sports car. On Thursday evening of April 3rd, we hosted a launch party to initiate the 650S into our showroom. The evening started out as any typical day here in Orange County. The sun provided the perfect lighting to accentuate the various paint finishes of the vehicles as the guests arrived. Volcano Yellow, Volcano Red, McLaren Orange, Azure Blue, Pearl White, Supernova Silver, Graphite Grey, all looked incredible as the metallic flakes glistened into the night. With valet securing the prized vehicles, onlookers passing by wondered what was going on. Hidden behind the glass veil of our store, our guests were greeted by the sight of a rare McLaren M6GT as they entered our showroom. Under the limelight of our showroom was the McLaren 650S Spider finished in “Tarocco Orange”. Our Dealer Principal, Bill Story, and General Manager, Pietro
Frigerio, thanked our guests for joining us and reaffirmed our commitment to the McLaren brand before introducing Peter Freiberger, Sales Manager of McLaren North America for a detailed presentation of the 650S Spider. He highlighted components of the 650S Spider that McLaren, in the constant pursuit of perfection, had improved on since the 12C. The perfectly-textured Alcantara & perfectly-woven Carbon Fiber seen in pictures is a true pleasure to witness, but to view the dynamic interaction of the light bouncing off the materials is something pictures cannot capture to the fullest extent. As our guests mingled and discussed with each other various aspects of the 650S Spider that caught their attention, others were sliding in to see just how much of an impact the changes from the 12C to the 650S were in the cockpit. Without a doubt, the 650S was warmly received by all. Our clients note and appreciate the details, and McLaren was spot-on with their 650S model. As we write this article, a few customers already took delivery of their brand new McLaren 650S.

I don’t have a favorite one, but locally we frequented Marché Moderne, Andrea, and a sushi place in Corona Del Mar called Sota. Food and wine is a big component in my life. When we travel, I always seek out nice restaurants so I have a list of favorite restaurants throughout the world.

DO YOU TAKE YOUR CAR ON THE TRACK? WHAT WAS YOUR LONGEST ROAD TRIP IN THIS CAR? We drove up to Monterey for the 2013 Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach. It was a leisurely driving trip. We left in the morning and met a friend for a seafood lunch in Ventura. Afterwards we drove for another couple of hours and stayed overnight in Paso Robles. There is a little gem of a restaurant called Artisan that we like. The next morning we continued our drive to Monterey and arrived in time for lunch. McLaren was celebrating its 25th anniversary and we were invited to preview the movie “Rush” and also participated in the unveiling of the P1. Of course, the Concours was nice too. The McLaren hospitality suite was first rate.
No, but I am looking forward to the Pure McLaren Driving Experience coming to the US. I will definitely take it to the track if McLaren arranges an event nearby. A couple of days at the Thermal Club will be nice.

On Tuesday April 8, we were thrilled to offer them a special treat by having Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive, joining us from Woking – UK for our Client Appreciation Dinner. In the ideal Newport Beach style, we hosted our dinner on a private yacht. The setting and weather were more than ideal as clients boarded our yacht. We reserved some time for our guests to mingle and get a chance to talk with Mike Flewitt

THE McLAREN P1 STEALS THE SHOW AT THE 10TH ANNUAL LA JOLLA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
S
ince we opened the dealership in 2012, McLaren Newport Beach has been participating in the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. This show, taking place in the La Jolla cove is a must attend for classic and sports car lovers. With the ocean as backdrop, the event draws a crowd of car enthusiasts as well as local people walking down. Back in 2012, we brought the rolling chassis and our first 12C Coupe. In 2013 we were proudly displaying our “Marlboro” livery inspired 12C Coupe side-by-side with our first 12C Spider in a unique SLR Blue form the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) department. This year we took it even further by bringing 3 very special vehicles: McLAREN 12C COUPE MSO: Loaned to us by McLaren Automotive especially for the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, the 12C MSO is a rolling showcase of what the McLaren Special Operation department can do. Based from inside the McLaren Technology Centre, the McLaren Special Operations division grew out of a discreet unit that built the seminal McLaren F1, where each car was effectively a personal commission for the customer. The philosophy of ‘starting with the driver’ is brought to life through today’s MSO team. Taking personalization far beyond the bespoke services of many carmakers, MSO offers something closer to the grand coach building traditions of the past, creating cars that are instantly, strikingly different. Crafting bespoke specifications in consultation with aerodynamic and design specialists, the only parameters are legal limits and automotive approved materials. Beyond that, the MSO team will accept a client brief, no matter how challenging, and make the idea a reality. A number of MSO standard options have been created that represent possible additions to the exterior and interior styling features. There is little need to alter the already outstanding dynamics of the car; but the addition of aerodynamic upgrade trim parts can offer improved performance, tai-
loring the driving experience to each customer’s exacting specifications. How far can the MSO team go? Because the radical carbon fiber MonoCell chassis provides all the car’s stiffness and crash safety, it’s possible to completely redesign the exterior to create a true one-off. One fact will remain the same regardless of the design brief though: like any other McLaren road car, it has to be perfectly engineered. The car we had on display was equipped with over $200,000 worth of MSO options, stating with the Alaskan Diamond White Exterior Paint. A lot of carbon fiber parts were also fitted to it: Front Bumper, Hood and Badge, Louvered Front Wings, Wiper System Cover, Mirror Arms, Engine Cover Vents, Vented Rear Deck, Airbrake, Rear Bumper Vents, Door Sills, Sill Tops, Extended Carbon Fiber Gear Shift Paddles, Instrument Cluster Bezel & Integrated Gear Shift Lights and of course the most visible and unique feature being the Carbon Fiber Roof with functioning Air Intake Snorkel. The list goes on and on including the Smoked Chrome Exhaust Tips, Gloss Black Diamond Cut Wheels & MSO Spoke Concept, MSO Super Sports Exhaust and much more! McLAREN 650S SPIDER: The second car we brought this year was our very first 650S Spider. In its brand new Tarocco Orange paint, this new addition to the McLaren line-up attracted a lot of admirers praising the design of the front bumper and new headlights. McLAREN P1: Last but not least, we displayed the Azure Blue P1 we had just delivered. The owner was very generous offering us the ability to display his freshly received toy at the show. Placed on a mirror-finished turntable, the McLaren P1 stole the show as it was for many in attendance the very first time they were seeing the 903 horse power hyper car up-close.

A
fter a great start at the season opener in Australia, the last three races proved to be a little more challenging than expected for the McLaren Mercedes team. The crew will be working hard to close the gap with the fastest cars with a few upgrades scheduled to be fitted for the next race in Barcelona, Spain. McLaren Mercedes Racing Director, Eric Boullier, commented after the race at the Shanghai International Circuit: “There’s
a three-week gap between now and the Spanish Grand Prix, and we’ll work flat-out between now and then in an effort to address our car’s shortcomings. We know what we have to do, and we’ll work night and day to do it. We are looking forward to it and will be welcoming you in our showroom at 10.00am on May 11th to watch the first race of the season on European ground.

Pirelli World Challenge K-Pax worked synonymously with the on-site McLaren GT staff to compete with a pair of McLaren 12C GT3 cars in the second round of the Pirelli World Challenge in Long Beach, CA. The pace of the race was incredibly fast and the twin 12C GT3 cars held their own putting up a grueling fight against the others. Ultimately, K-Pax Racing car #9 driven by Alex Figge finished in Position 7 with the fastest lap of the entire race meanwhile car #6 driven by Robert Thorne did not finish due to mechanical issues.
