DEAR McLAREN ENTHUSIAST,

AS

we just delivered our third McLaren P1™, let’s take a look back at the hypercar tradition McLaren started two decades ago with The McLaren F1. Technologies still reserved for the most exclusive modern sports cars such as the airbrake and the carbon fiber chassis were already integrated into the McLaren F1. Powered by a V12 producing 620hp, its top speed of 240mph has been exceeded by only a handful production cars to this day. Meanwhile, the McLaren 650S continues to receive praises from automotive journalists around the world. We put some prospects and 12C owners behind the wheel of the 650S on the legendary Laguna Seca raceway for a track day in partnership with McLaren Automotive for them to experience the latest creation from Woking to the fullest. Finally, this month marks the 20th anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s tragic accident at Imola. We wanted to dedicate this issue to this champion that brought so much not only to McLaren but to Formula One in general. #RememberSenna Thank you, Pietro Frigerio General Manager McLaren Newport Beach

THE McLAREN

P

ower, pace and peerless quality, the legendary McLaren F1 is a technological masterpiece. The fastest production car of its time. The finest sports car of its generation. For many, the greatest supercar ever built. The F1’s chief designer, Gordon Murray, had been working on a one-plus-two seating configuration since 1969. Twenty years later, his innovative arrowhead concept came to fruition in the F1. Brilliance takes time. It took four years to meticulously plan, design and build the allconquering F1. Beautifully engineered and exceptionally quick, the F1 broke numerous world records during the ‘90s, and it remains the fastest naturally aspirated road car ever built. Only 106 cars were made in a limited production run, making the F1 one of the most exclusive cars in the world today.

A UNIQUE DRIVING EXPERIENCE The unique layout, with a central driving position, offers the advantages of a single-seat race car. With unrivalled forward visibility and a clear and commanding view of the road, the central seating position enhances the driver’s sense of control. Vital in a 240mph road car. Murray’s clever packaging and distinctive layout created another unique benefit. It became the first supercar with room for two passengers.

UNCOMPROMISING DESIGN Handpicked: After analysing existing supercar performance characteristics, the F1’s handpicked engineering team rethought every element of sports car design. Drawing on McLaren’s Formula 1™ expertise, and with an uncompromising approach

to design, they stripped weight, reduced drag and increased downforce. Every millimetre of the F1 was deliberated to create the world’s most exhilarating car. Pure gold: The naturally aspirated 6.1-litre, V12 BMW powerplant generated the highest power output for its size, and delivered over 620bhp. This much power creates a lot of heat. So the engine bay was lined with the best heat reflector available – pure gold. No compromise: Our no compromise approach to engineering design meant we spent over 3,000 hours making each carbon fibre chassis. The throttle pedal was handcrafted out of six separate pieces of titanium. The instrument panels are handmade, hand painted and each needle is individually machined. This level of precision extended to the driver too – as each cabin was customised to the owner.

M cL AR EN F 1

DRIVEN TO INNOVATE From the Formula 1 inspired telemetry to the pioneering carbon chassis, the F1’s innovative technologies were decades ahead of its time. Some of the most influential engineering highlights, like the carbon fibre tub, dihedral doors, flat underbody and Airbrake are still signature features on today’s McLarens. Airbrake: The world’s fastest road car needed the world’s most advanced braking system. The computer-controlled Airbrake

balances load across the car and ensures the F1 maintains poise when braking hard. Dihedral doors: The dihedral doors are an elegant solution to a complex problem. Beautiful, simple, practical, their wide opening design makes it easy to access the central driving position. Race-bred monitoring: Developed for the track and honed for the F1, the on-board diagnostic computer continuously monitors and logs a myriad of metrics to identify and diagnose faults.

SUBLIME AERODYNAMICS No spoilers. No wings on struts. Absolute stability at high speed. These were the immutable aerodynamic principles the F1 was designed on. To create traction-enhancing load without adding mass, the team also applied the latest ground force techniques. Aerodynamic efficiency: Months of modelling and wind tunnel testing contributed to a drag coefficient of 0.32 – making the McLaren F1 one of the most aerodynamically efficient sports cars ever built. Downforce: Formula 1-style flat underbody and diffuser system integrates into the overall design to improve downforce and provide critical engine and brake cooling.

Active aerodynamics: A computer-controlled rear airbrake ensures the F1 maintains a constant centre of pressure when braking hard.

WEIGHT SAVING DESIGN To enhance performance, handling, braking and sheer driving feel, the F1 team knew they would have to minimise weight – everywhere. Lighter and stronger than aluminium, the F1 was the first road car with a carbon fibre chassis. Its weight-saving wheels were made from magnesium alloy. The supporting sub-structure was made from titanium. Even the toolkit, made from titanium, was 50% lighter than a steel kit.

unday the 11th was a very special day as we teamed up with McLaren Automotive to present 16 lucky people the opportunity to test out the new 650S on the famous Laguna Seca Raceway. Guests arrived on Saturday evening and were treated to a private dinner in downtown Monterey overlooking the beautiful Pacific ocean. Everyone was excited to shake hands & trade stories with several McLaren Automotive personnel who made the trip all the way from MTC in England. The surprise guest of honor for the weekend was McLaren’s chief test driver, and racing guru Chris Goodwin. After a good night’s sleep, everyone was whisked away from the hotel on Sunday morning and presented with a track paddock full of 650S Coupes & Spiders in a variety of different colors. Following an excellent breakfast and morning briefing, guests were given a presentation into the future of McLaren Automotive by Hud Giles & Chris Goodwin. Throughout the entire day, participants had a great opportunity to get maximum seat time whether in the driver or

passenger seat. Chris put together an excellent team of professional drivers who have had, or who are still currently holding amazing professional racing careers. The driving demonstrations set up throughout the day consisted of: Timed Autocross with a professional instructor in the passenger seat, a scenic canyon drive through the hills of Salinas & Monterey California, on track lapping with a professional driver in the passenger seat, lead-follow on the track, and finally HOT laps provided by the instructors with participants hanging on for dear life in the passenger seat. Everything from suspension dynamics to braking maneuvers and extreme car control was designed, and displayed to show participants the improvements made on the 12C we have all loved so much over the past 3 years. Guests walked away from the weekend with a better understanding of McLaren’s commitment to pushing the boundaries, and constantly evolving their products to stay ahead of the competition in the pursuit of ultimate performance and perfection.

THIRD McLAREN P1 DELIVERY AT McLAREN NEWPORT BEACH Each P1 that comes from the factory is hand-built and custom tailored to the owner’s request. Everything from unique exterior paint, to special colored stitching, and everything in between can be requested. We have found over the past few orders we have placed with the McLaren that they have a problem saying no to client requests. With McLaren, anything is possible.

Our first P1 was optioned by a local client and painted in Pearlescent “Azure Blue”. This P1 has all the optional exterior carbon fiber items such as: front bumper, rear bumper, door inserts, exterior mirrors, roof snorkel, and rear wing. Additional items include stealth package, stealth emblems, stealth wheels, and silver brake calipers. As if this vehicle was not unique enough, the interior was spec’d with custom colored leather & stitching through the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) department.

TO VIEW “AZURE BLUE” McLAREN P1

Shown here is our second delivered P1 painted by the MSO department in “Volcanic Orange Coarse”. The Arizona owner of this example is no stranger to the McLaren brand. He is also the owner of an SLR Coupe, and put several thousand miles on a 12C before trading up to McLaren’s new flagship. When ordering, the owner requested a much higher metallic content to the already stunning Volcano Orange that we have all come to love. Additional options include: stealth wheels, polished brake calipers, carbon fiber front and rear bumpers, carbon fiber door inserts, carbon mirrors, and carbon roof snorkel. Be on the lookout for an Orange blur Phoenix!

TO VIEW “VOLCANIC ORANGE COARSE” McLAREN P1

Crisp, clean, and high contrast describes our most recent P1 delivery to the Newport Beach community. If you’re an auto enthusiast on Facebook or Instagram then you are probably familiar with chassis #142 which is painted in bright “Alaskan Diamond White”. This McLaren P1 has been optioned with our highest Special Operations content to date. Bespoke options include the special request paint, visual carbon & painted rear wing, bright White leather on the seats, steering wheel, and door handles, “P1” logo painted on the engine cover, “P1” logo embroidered on the seats, and color-matched painted vent bezels on the interior.
