Remembering DOROTHY
On September 3, 1937, Dorothy Jean Johnson, was born to Robert and Lillie Mae Johnson. She was a joy and blessing to her parents. Dorothy was the second child born to this union in Evergreen, Texas. Dorothy accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age at New Bethel Baptist Church in Cleveland, TX and continued to exemplify this acceptance throughout her life’s journey as a Woman of God, devout Christian, and servant of the Lord. She matriculated through the Cleveland, Texas school system graduating at the top of her class in 1955 from Douglass High School where she was a cheerleader. After graduation, she briefly attended Prairie View A&M University. She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star “Never Late” #273 – Cleveland, TX. Shortly, thereafter, she fell in love and married the love of her life, Willie Allen Berry on November 17, 1956. To this union, two children were born: Robert Allen and Tressie Yvette. In 1958, she and Willie Allen moved to Houston from Cleveland. She joined New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E. A Baldridge, and continued to serve under the leadership of the late Rev. Willie E. Jones, where she served on many auxiliaries and held various positions over the years including Sunday School teacher, Mass Choir, Women’s Mission Board, Deaconess and President of the Pastor’s Aid Committee.
She worked for many years in various occupations including but not limited to the retail industry at Playhouse Toys for many years and worked her way up to store manager. She was later employed by A-Rocket Moving and Storage as an office manager. After retirement, she enjoyed working at the Poll Sites during various elections encouraging our voices to be heard. “Aunt Jeannie”, “Ms. Dorothy” or “Yang-Yang” to most, loved cared and gave freely to her family or anyone she considered family. She was very forthcoming and honest; yet she made sure her love for God was at the core of everything she said and did. She opened her home to many people as a testament of her faith. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, word search puzzles and music. On January 11, 2022, God saw that she was tired, so He opened the gates of Heaven, took her hand, and welcomed her to come rest with Him in Eternity. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her older sister Minnie Elmo Edwards and her brother, Robert “Buddy” Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory: Her handsome groom of over sixty-five years Willie Allen Berry; two devoted children Robert (Valery) Berry and Tressie Yvette Berry. Her sister that she helped to raise Bessie B. Fletcher; two brothers-in-law Talton (Jackie) Berry and Dudley Berry. Three grandchildren: ShaJuana (Ty), TeVante, and Kirk, two great-grandchildren: Briana (Juan) and Jose, and two great-great grandchildren: Axariah and Axari; and a god-daughter Jackie Myers Dugas, and a host of other relatives and friends.
“WELL DONE THY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT!” Matthew 25:23
Before 1956 I had walked through life with nothing until you; until you, I knew no pleasure. And then one day God sent you to me; you, my wife, my treasure. A gift from God, a gift so fine that you can never be measured. Hand in hand we walked together, God’s grace warmed us from above. It’s Him I thank each day I wake for blessing me with all your love. I still say I Love You, But now there’s no reply. I always feel your presence As if you never left my side. But real love never fades. It still burns like the sun. Although they’re far away, Those memories go on and on. Your spirit will never die It shines like the stars. I know you’re sleeping in heaven, But you’re living in my heart. The gently falling rain That lingers upon my face Are the tears falling from heaven From a wife I can never replace. Yes, all these little signs, They help me to believe That death is not the end And you’re still here with me. With Love, Your husband – Willie Allen
