Dear friends, I would like to introduce you to summa, a new contemporary art fair in Madrid. With more than five years of experience in the art world, from ArtFairs we want to contribute with our knowledge and history to create a different new appointment: intimate and with a strong direction. summa is formed by a distinctive and rigorous selection of galleries made by our International Selection Committee. summa is born with the intention of shaking up the established relationships among gallerists, collectors, general public and artists; setting up a proposition that will attract 64 galleries from 17 countries and more than 130 artists to MataderoMadrid.

The General Program of summa introduces international art galleries with an interesting professional career; Up joins spaces approaching emerging art with a younger nature; and MadridFoto brings image and art together. Our selection committee for these three sections is made up of the following galleries: Baudoin Lebon (France), Espacio Mínimo (Spain), Filomena Soares (Portugal), Mor Charpentier (France) and Oliva Arauna (Spain).

Two independent curators, Agustín Pérez Rubio, former director of the MUSAC, and Alexia Tala, artistic director at Plataforma Atacama, will curate the Transversal and Transversal Emergente programs respectively. These two programs define essential projects accessible by invitation only by the curators, taking up the space of project rooms.

On the other hand, Punto de Encuentro creates a space for communication among artists, collectors, curators, museum professionals, foundations and institutions. The round tables are going to reflect on the content of the artistic practices on the 21stcentury as well as the present of contemporary art collecting.

Rosina Gómez Baeza, Lucía Ybarra, from YGBART, and Arianne Gaazenbeek, from Art fairs S.L., are the coordinators of these four round tables.

Estimados amigos, Quiero presentaros summa, una nueva feria de arte contemporáneo en Madrid. Tras cinco años de experiencia en el mundo del arte, desde ArtFairs hemos querido aportar nuestro bagaje y experiencia para crear una cita diferente: con un carácter íntimo, con galerías cuidadosamente seleccionadas por un selecto comité de selección internacional y con la intención de revolucionar las relaciones establecidas entre galeristas, coleccionistas, público y artistas. Una propuesta que atrae a 64 galerías de 17 países y a más de 130 artistas a Matadero Madrid.

El Programa General de summa presenta galerías con una interesante trayectoria profesional; Up se acerca al arte emergente con espacios con un carácter más joven y MadridFoto aúna imagen y arte. El comité de selección de estas tres secciones lo han formado: Baudoin Lebon (Francia), Espacio Mínimo (España), Filomena Soares (Portugal), Mor Charpentier (Francia) y Oliva Arauna (España).

Dos comisarios independientes, Agustín Pérez Rubio, quien dirigió el MUSAC, y Alexia Tala, directora artística de Plataforma Atacama, se ocupan de los programas Transversal y Transversal Emergente, respectivamente. Sendos proyectos, a los que se accede por invitación de los comisarios, ocupan los project rooms que envuelven el conjunto de la feria.

Por otro lado, Punto de Encuentro pretende reflexionar sobre el arte en el siglo XXI y crear así un espacio de comunicación entre artistas, coleccionistas, comisarios, profesionales de museos, fundaciones e instituciones. Se trata de indagar en el contenido de las prácticas artísticas así como en el presente del coleccionismo contemporáneo. Rosina Gómez Baeza, Lucía Ybarra, de YGBART, y Arianne Gaazenbeek son las coordinadoras de estas cuatro mesas redondas.

Some other proposals showing during the fair are, the intervention of the Iranian artist and performer Sussan Deyhim, with a project specifically created for summa, and the videoroom exhibition project curated by Nerea Ubieto. The latter, named Uneasy Pleasure, will drive us deep inside the thin line that separates pleasure from grief.

Gastronomy has also grown to currently become an artistic discipline itself. The art of stirring ingredients, mixing them and obtaining unexpected results heightens the recipes of many contemporary chefs and turns them into creations. This is why summa devotes a space to it: Saborea el arte. This proposal marries art and gastronomy, and invites all visitors to taste different dishes by masters chefs such as Michelin´s starred Mario Sandoval, Paco Roncero and Pedro Larumbe not only in the fair, but also in several Madrid restaurants. summa takes place in two warehouses at Matadero-Madrid, a space that has built its own personality within the cultural atmosphere of the capital. The excellent architects studio Nieto Sobejano is the author of the design for the exhibition space, adapting the building of the former slaughterhouse.

We have made a great effort for summa to open the artistic season 2013 in style and to consolidate as an unavoidable appointment within the international art fairs route. I hope you come to enjoy, to discover and, of course, to buy a work of art. To sum up, I would like you to let this first edition of the International Contemporary Art Fair summa amaze you.

La intervención de la perfomer iraní Sussan Deyhim con un proyecto específicamente creado para summa o la muestra de videoarte Uneasy Pleasure, comisariada por Nerea Ubieto, que a través de cinco proyecciones profundiza en la fina línea que separa el placer del dolor, son otras de las propuestas de la feria.

La gastronomía se ha consolidado como una disciplina artística en sí misma. El arte de mezclar ingredientes, experimentar con ellos y obtener resultados inesperados, eleva las recetas de muchos chefs contemporáneos y las convierte en creaciones. De ahí que en summa hayamos querido dedicarle un espacio: Saborea el arte. Una propuesta que marida arte y gastronomía e invita, en la feria y en varios restaurantes de Madrid, a todos los asistentes a probar diferentes platos de maestros como Mario Sandoval, Paco Roncero y Pedro Larumbe entre otros. summa ocupa dos naves de Matadero de Madrid, un espacio que se ha forjado una personalidad propia en el ambiente cultural de la capital. Para adaptar las naves de la antigua carnicería, el excelente estudio de arquitectos Nieto Sobejano se ha encargado del diseño del espacio.

Como veis nos hemos esforzado para que summa inaugure la temporada artística 2013 por todo lo alto y se consolide como una cita ineludible en el circuito internacional de ferias de arte. Espero que os acerquéis a disfrutar, a curiosear y como no, a adquirir una obra. En resumen, a dejaros sorprender con la primera edición de la Feria de Arte Contemporáneo Internacional summa.

Curatorially mounting an exhibition fair means providing the works, selected through galleries, with a discourse in some section of the fair. In this sense, I believe that if we commissioners were to take a close part in this selection and provide our knowledge, this would be positive, not so much in the market, which is not our field, although we are continuously aware of it, but above all to put together a discourse with the artists and the pieces of work presented.

Thus, accepting summa’s invitation to carry out Transversal has been a real challenge, as it is not easy to think in other terms than those that we commissioners usually use; but, on the other hand, it is very satisfying to know that the knowledge, the ideas and the teamwork carried out with the artists and gallery owners mean that it is possible to carry out a project of the curatorial magnitude of “MASTERS”.

In this meticulous selection of artists and in their interpretation of pieces and spaces within the fair, it becomes clear, first of all through the play on words used in its title, and secondly, with the selection, the injustice and the effort that many female artists have had to make to be able to establish an artistic career and finally be considered just as important and globally prominent as their male counterparts.

Armar curatorialmente una feria significa dotar de un discurso aquellos trabajos seleccionados a través de las galerías en alguna sección de la misma. En este sentido, pienso que es positivo el que los comisarios nos acerquemos a esta selección para aportar nuestros conocimientos, no tanto en el mercado, que no es nuestro terreno aunque siendo conscientes de él, sino sobre todo para hilvanar un discurso con esos artistas y sus obras que se presentan. De este modo, aceptar la invitación de summa a realizar Transversal ha sido todo una reto, pues no es fácil tener que pensar en otros términos a los que normalmente los comisarios solemos hacer, pero por otra parte es una gran satisfacción saber que los conocimientos, las ideas y el trabajo en equipo con los artistas y galeristas hace que se pueda llevar a cabo un proyecto de la envergadura curatorial de “MASTERS”.

En esta cuidada selección de artistas y en su lectura de piezas y espacios dentro de la feria se deja patente, primero a través del juego del lenguaje con el titulo del mismo, y segundo con la selección; la injusticia y el esfuerzo que muchas mujeres artistas han tenido que realizar para lograr abrirse una carrera artística hasta llegar a que se les considere tan importantes e internacionalmente destacadas como sus homólogos masculinos.

La selección cuenta con la presencia de doce destacadas artistas de diversos contextos geopolíticos: Alemania, Argentina, Brasil, España, México, Portugal, Rumania y Venezuela, siendo consciente la relación de nuestro país

country with both contexts that we connect with: Europe and Latin America. All these artists, over the age of sixtyfive, some of whom are no longer with us, deserve to be treated as genuine and fundamental pieces of international contemporary art, regardless of their sex, origin and age.

The works selected vary from the first production years until the present day, although the connection of all of them with the sixties and seventies hangs over them. That is when many of them began to use their own and differentiating language, which, since then, has kept them linked to their personal policies. Thus, the relationship with photography, with pre-formative games, the textual, the idea of process, the body as the first representation and policy tool, although geometry too, make way for the concepts and aesthetics of these artists.

All of these “Masters� are an example of constant aesthetic, political and discursive work, closer to or further away from the feminist theory and to the questions of gender. Their aim is to make the public understand the importance of the work of many of these women: friends, sisters, daughters or wives, who have obtained recognition very late on in life, if we compare them to many other artists.

The diversity of disciplines, narrations and aesthetics, among others, place emphasis on the intertwined methods, known by all these artists who, though many of them have had a generic load in their personal policy and in their work, - while this is often not easy to perceive -, have made it clear that almost all of them were born before 1945. This is an existential salutary lesson when shaping as women in the world of art.

Many of them already form part of public and private collections, and they are becoming more and more important in the contemporary art scene. After all, it is their work that makes it possible for them to be really considered

Todas estas artistas mayores de sesenta y cinco años, y algunas de ellas desaparecidas, merecen ser tratadas como verdaderas piezas fundamentales del arte contemporáneo internacional, mas allá de su género, procedencia y edad. Las obras seleccionas van desde los primeros años de producción hasta la actualidad, aunque en todas sobrevuela su conexión con los años setenta y setenta donde muchas de ellas comenzaron a tener un lenguaje propio y diferenciador que las ha hecho mantenerse desde entonces entroncadas a sus políticas personales. Por ello la relación con la fotografía, los juegos performativos, lo textual, la idea de proceso, el cuerpo como primera herramienta de representación y de política, aunque también la geometría, llegan a abrir paso a los conceptos y estéticas de estas artistas.

Todas estas “Masters” son un ejemplo del trabajo constante estético, político y discursivo mas cercano o lejano a la teoría feminista y a las cuestiones de genero con lo que se pretende hacer entender al público la importancia del trabajo de muchas de estas mujeres: amigas, hermanas, hijas o esposas, que han obtenido el reconocimiento muy tardíamente si lo comparamos con tantos otros artistas.

La diversidad de disciplinas, narraciones y estéticas entre otros ponen el énfasis en los modos mixtificados y conocidos por todas estas artistas que, aunque muchas de ellas si han tenido una carga genérica en su política personal y en su trabajo, no siendo muchas veces sencillo el discernirlo, han dejado patente que casi todas ellas han nacido antes de 1945, y eso viene a ser un revulsivo vivencial a la hora de formarse como mujer en el mundo del arte.

Es a fin de cuentas su trabajo el que las hace realmente poder ser consideradas como verdaderas “maestras” del arte y de la cultura contemporánea ya que ellas supieron pasar y vivir diferenciando lo esencial de cada momento e ir mas allá en sus propuestas generadas por los cauces intelectuales y vivenciales de la contemporaneidad circundante.

Un proyecto que aunque no pretende ser un compendio sobre arte y feminismo, si que se asienta bajo la teoría feminista a la hora de seleccionar y presentar conscientemente este núcleo fundamental de “Masters” del arte contemporáneo.

I COULD HAVE NOT NOTICED IT… Alexia Tala

The artists selected for the Transversal Emergente/ Midcarrier I could have not noticed it… section have something or perhaps much in common. All of them, located in different contexts, have observed, analyzed and reflected their environment, incorporating it into their creative process. While contemporary art tends to question a lot of events that occur on a daily basis, many times they go by unnoticed as they are often part of daily life. In that sense, these artists have drawn experiences of a given context and emphasized their vision in photographs, paintings and installations turning their artistic practice and exercising their creation.

File, history and memory have been of interest for some artists, Rossel Meseguer has unearthed traces of mining in northern Chile, Bolivia and Spain, to generate a dialogue between prosperity and failure, Carlos Motta has rescued the story on the issue of homosexuality in colonial times and has put the issue in the indigenista context again.

Other artists have analyzed a social and economic environment; Christiane Pooley has stopped in the Spanish financial and life position today through painting portraying the crisis. Meanwhile, Peter G. Romero has focused on the international economic situation and quoting Shakespeare has created a sound work.

For other artists the nature of their work is there, in existence, in the middle of the busy city, where you just have to know how to look. Cristián Silva-Avaria´s

PODRÍA NO HABERLO NOTADO… Alexia Tala

Los artistas convocados en la sección Transversal Emergente/ Mid-carrier Podría no haberlo notado… tienen algo o quizás mucho en común. Todos ellos, situados en distintos contextos, han observado, analizado y reflexionado frente a su entorno, incorporándolo a su proceso de creación. Si bien, el arte contemporáneo tiende a cuestionar una gran cantidad de acontecimientos que se suceden cotidianamente, muchas veces parte de esa cotidianidad pasa desapercibida por un exceso de costumbre. En ese sentido, estos artistas han extraído experiencias de un contexto determinado y han enfatizado la mirada sobre ellos; en fotografías, pinturas e instalaciones han volcado su práctica artística y han ejercitado la creación.

El archivo, la historia y la memoria han sido de interés para algunos artistas; Rossel Meseguer ha desenterrado rastros de mineras del norte de Chile, Bolivia y España, para generar un diálogo entre prosperidad y fracaso; Carlos Motta ha rescatado la narración frente al tema de la homosexualidad en tiempos de la colonia y ha puesto el tema indigenista nuevamente en contexto.

Otros artistas han analizado un entorno social y económico; Christiane Pooley se ha detenido en la situación financiera que hoy viven los españoles y a través de la pintura ha retratado la crisis; mientras Pedro G. Romero, por su parte, se ha enfocado en la situación económica internacional y citando a Shakespeare ha creado una obra sonora.

photographs outline his approach towards the interventions or temporary structures in public space. In Carme Nogueira´s work we can see how the passing of time and urban transformation changes in memory, as well as in the use and livability of a city. A similar strategy is proposed by Philippe Gruenberg when considering urban domestic space / social, firstly, through the cinematic iconography and secondly, through a baroque imagery deployed in the city of Lima.

I could have not noticed it‌ lets us reflect from different perspectives, situations, events and urban aspects, social, political, historical and economic factors that we stopped noticing. The habit is enhanced at high speed and often leaves us asking, transforming the obvious concern or worse commonplace. The way of looking of these artists with hard questioning and analyzing where they are or were they stopped during their lives, and with a U-turn in their contexts they ask themselves about how putting their experience in place at that time itself becomes them.

Para otros artistas la naturaleza de la obra está ahí, en existencia, en medio de la ciudad transitada, sólo hay que saber mirar; en Cristián Silva-Avária fotografías de intervenciones o construcciones transitorias en el espacio público delinean su enfoque; en Carme Nogueira el paso del tiempo y la transformación urbana generan cambios en la memoria, en el uso y en la habitabilidad de una ciudad.

Una estrategia similar propone Philippe Gruenberg al considerar el espacio doméstico urbano/social, por una parte, a través de la iconografía cinematográfica y por otra, a través de un imaginario barroco desplegado en la ciudad de Lima.

Podría no haberlo notado… nos permite reflexionar desde distintos puntos de vista, situaciones, acontecimientos y ciertos aspectos urbanos, sociales, políticos, históricos y económicos que dejamos de notar. La costumbre se acrecienta a gran velocidad y muchas veces nos dejamos de preguntar, transformando la inquietud en obviedad o aún peor en algo habitual. La mirada de estos artistas retoma con fuerza la pregunta y analiza el lugar donde están o estuvieron parados y con un giro en 360 grados se cuestionan acerca de sus contextos situando la experiencia en el lugar que en ese momento se les vuelve propio.

UNEASY PLEASURE Nerea Ubieto

A fine line separates pleasure from turmoil; enjoyment from unease. That vague space has become the inspiration for ten artists who, with their videos, are able to concentrate both sensations. During their viewing, the videos generate feelings of repulsion, anguish or annoyance in the spectators; in other shots they become attractive and suggestive.

There are many factors that affect human complacency, and the limits that confine them are very subtle. The works selected for the exhibition demonstrate the delicate balance of our emotions. A struggle where pleasant and violent acts compete with each other.

This expectation generates anxiety and hope at the same time; filling the void caused by ambition implies a continuous and costly endeavour, which will only be rewarded when it is fulfilled. On the way to happiness, we, human beings, oscillate between that uneasy pleasure implied by having a dream and the satisfaction of being able to make it come true.

UNEASY PLEASURE Nerea Ubieto

Una delgada línea separa el placer de la perturbación; el disfrute de lo incómodo. Ese espacio difuso sirve de inspiración para diez artistas que, a través de sus vídeos, son capaces de condensar ambas sensaciones. En algunos momentos de su visionado, las piezas generan en el espectador cierta repulsión, angustia o molestia, mientras que, en otras tomas, se tornan atractivos y sugerentes.

Son muchos los factores que influyen en la complacencia humana y muy delicados los límites que la circunscriben.

La selección de obras presentes en la muestra pone en evidencia el delicado equilibrio en el que se mueven nuestras emociones. Una lucha en la que lo agradable y lo violento entran en competición.

La expectación genera inquietud al mismo tiempo que ilusión; llenar el vacío que provoca una ambición supone un esfuerzo continuo y costoso, que solo se verá recompensado cuando se cumpla. En el camino hacia la felicidad, los seres humanos nos movemos entre el placer incómodo que implica tener un sueño y la satisfacción de poder hacerlo realidad.
