SUMMA 2015: ART IN CONTEXT

For the third consecutive year, SUMMA returns to Matadero to liven up Madrid’s art scene with its international flavour. Working in this factory of ideas and projects encourages a fair that is much more thoughtful, urbane and in context: a fair of one of the cultural capitals of Europe which, from diverse requests, makes the effort to build a platform of action around contemporary art, in what might be the most awesome moment of the year, the end of the summer. SUMMA brings its international approach. In the year of its consolidation, SUMMA resolves to be a fair, which is attentive to the social and cultural context in which art is produced, paying particular attention to the political circumstances that motivate the works of some of the greatest creators of our time. There is a certain tendency to condemn art fairs as being superficial, incapable of delving into the roots of creation and its context. This is apparent right from the cover of this catalogue: “Aquí no cabe el arte”, the work of Antonio Caro which, outside its context of space and time, opens its meanings to the thousand possible answers to the questions about art and its places. Its characteristics, SUMMA attends with great interest to the increase in private collections and the occasional access to contemporary art of those who see in its shapes and content the best projection of their vital aspirations. In order to penetrate the peculiarities of this new art-collecting, we count once again on the incredible support of the Fundación Banco Santander, through the programme of New Collectors.

SUMMA 2015: ARTE EN CONTEXTO

Por tercer año consecutivo, SUMMA vuelve a Matadero para animar la escena artística madrileña con su impronta internacional. Trabajar en esta fábrica de ideas y proyectos motiva una feria mucho más reflexiva, urbana y en contexto: el de una de las capitales culturales de Europa que, desde diversas instancias, se esfuerza por construir una plataforma de acción en torno al arte contemporáneo, en el que quizá sea su momento estelar del año, el fin del verano. SUMMA aporta su impronta internacional. En el año de su consolidación, SUMMA se propone como una feria atenta al contexto social y cultural en que se produce el arte, con particular atención a las circunstancias políticas que motivan las obras de algunos de los mejores creadores de nuestro tiempo. Hay una cierta tendencia a condenar las ferias de arte como superficiales, incapaces de ahondar hasta las raíces mismas de la creación y su contexto. Pero podemos hacer ferias diferentes. Así es desde la portada de este catálogo: "Aquí no cabe el arte", obra de Antonio Caro que, fuera de su contexto espacio-temporal, plantea una reflexión sobre el arte y sus lugares, hoy. Por sus características, SUMMA a asiste con el mayor interés tanto al aumento de las colecciones privadas como al acceso ocasional al arte contemporáneo de quienes ven en sus formas y contenidos la mejor proyección de sus aspiraciones vitales. Para adentrarnos en las particularidades de ese nuevo coleccionismo, contamos una año más con el apoyo extraordinario de la Fundación Banco Santander, a través del programa de Nuevos Coleccionistas.

In 2015, the fair continues the line of work initiated two years ago and, to its General Section, adds the Transversal, TRAZOS, Madrid Foto and the Encuentros. The transversal section integrates two projects of great emotive and meaningful weight. How to collect political art is the proposal that defines the desire of SUMMA to offer an art fair “in context”. Contemporary art has ceased to be Euro/North American and has opened up to other spheres. SUMMA begins this edition with a line of work carried out by Gabriela Salgado and orientated towards African contemporary art: Africa Focus. TRAZOS (pencil strokes) is the area that SUMMA dedicates to the contemporary classics, the art and artists of the 20th century, with special interest paid to the Spanish but without neglecting the international perspective. It is a section that we are starting up with great effort and anticipation because we know it is going to flourish in the coming years. Artists like Luis Gordillo, Ángel Campano, Darío Villalba, Antonio Caro and David Medalla, among others, make up our first selection of “masters”. Following the same line of thought, the fair aims to bring back Madrid Foto. This shall promote the excellent creative moment of Spanish photography among international collectors. Another feature of SUMMA 2015 destined to stand the test of time is the presentation of a significant collection. The pioneering work of Oliva Arauna as a gallery owner and collector is generally acknowledged. Once she said that “I had a lot of installation, and photography and video, and my colleagues asked me if I thought I was a foundation (she laughs). But I covered a niche in the market which has now grown and is more common”. An example of How to collect political art, the collection of Oliva Arauna shows an incorruptible commitment to reality, through those who have been the outstanding artists of her gallery and are pillars of her collection: Alfredo Jaar, Miguel RíoBranco, Per Barclay... Fernando Castro Flórez is in charge of inspiring and directing the Encuentros (Encounters). Those reflections will be focussed on during the fair, in “The future of collections”. En 2015, la feria continúa la línea de trabajo iniciada hace dos años y, a su Programa General, añade la Transversal, además de TRAZOS, Madrid Foto y los Encuentros. La Sección Transversal la integran dos proyectos de gran carga emotiva y significativa. Cómo coleccionar arte político, es la propuesta que define el deseo de SUMMA de ofrecer una feria de arte "en contexto". Y asumiendo que el arte contemporáneo ha dejado de ser euro-norteamericano y se abre a otros ámbitos, abrimos una línea de trabajo desarrollada por Gabriela Salgado y girada hacia el arte africano contemporáneo: Africa Focus. TRAZOS es la zona que SUMMA dedica a los clásicos contemporáneos, al arte y los artistas del siglo XX, con particular interés en los españoles pero sin descuidar la perspectiva internacional. Es una sección que comenzamos con la mayor ilusión y esfuerzo porque la sabemos destinada a experimentar un gran desarrollo en los próximos años. Artistas como Luis Gordillo, Ángel Campano, Darío Villalba, Antonio Caro o David Medalla, y otros más, integran nuestra primera selección de "maestros". El mismo objetivo se plantea la recuperación de Madrid Foto: promover entre el coleccionismo internacional el excelente momento creativo de la fotografía española. Otro rasgo de SUMMA 2015 llamado a perdurar en el tiempo es la presentación de una colección significativa. La labor pionera de Oliva Arauna como galerista y coleccionista es generalmente reconocida. Alguna vez ha dicho de sí misma que "tenía mucha instalación, y foto y vídeo, y mis colegas me decían que a ver si me creía que era una fundación. Pero cubrí un nicho de mercado que ahora ya ha crecido y es más habitual". Un ejemplo de Cómo coleccionar arte político, la colección de Oliva Arauna muestra un compromiso insobornable con la realidad, a través de los que han sido artistas señeros de su galería y son pilares de su colección: Alfredo Jaar, Miguel Río-Branco, Per Barclay... Fernando Castro Flórez es el encargado de inspirar y orientar los Encuentros. Durante la celebración de la feria, esas reflexiones se centrarán en "El futuro de las colecciones". HOW TO COLLECT POLITICAL ART

SUMMA resolves to defend the commitment of contemporary art to the reality in which it is carried out, through its section How to collect political art. The artist and, of course, the collector, tackle the world from the subjects that give it shape, and visual culture forms part of the production of identity, in a language which is always renewed as art ceaselessly updates itself. We are in the 21st century. It makes no sense to maintain the opposition between art and politics, which increasingly comes from certain institutions. SUMMA wants to present art that matters to people, and it is often art, which is based on the things and deeds that interest the society in which they are produced. Obviously there are conservative forces in the art market and a tendency towards gloss as both form and content. Conceptualism might have set an elegant trap… and there may be a sector of the public that remains cold when faced with this disappearance of the world into art. SUMMA believes that its support of political or “in context” art will help many artists and galleries to carry on with their activity, essential for the democratic hygiene of our society. We count on the capacity to make an impact, which Democracia always displays (in gallery T20). There are also two women with forceful approaches, such as the Chilean Ingrid Wildi-Merino (in Aural galería), and the Israeli, Oreet Ashery, in waterside contemporary. The dynamism of Prometeo Gallery, from Milán, is shown in the presence at the fair of two Italian artists of

CÓMO COLECCIONAR ARTE POLÍTICO

SUMMA se propone reivindicar el compromiso del arte contemporáneo con la realidad en la que se desarrolla a través de su sección Cómo coleccionar arte político. El artista y, desde luego, el coleccionista, abordan el mundo desde los temas que le dan forma; y la cultura visual forma parte de la producción de identidad, con un lenguaje siempre renovado que el arte actualiza sin cesar. Estamos en el siglo XXI. No tiene sentido mantener la oposición, que se viene potenciando desde ciertas instancias, entre arte y política. SUMMA quiere presentar arte que importe a la gente y muchas veces es un arte que se basa en los hechos y las ideas que interesan a la sociedad en que se produce. Claro que hay fuerzas conservadoras en el mercado del arte y toda una tendencia hacia el brillo como forma y como contenido. Puede que el conceptualismo haya proporcionado alguna trampa elegante... Pero coleccionar arte político es otra forma de conocer el mundo y los temas que lo configuran en este momento. SUMMA cree que su apoyo al arte político o "en contexto", ayudará a muchos artistas y galerías a seguir adelante con su actividad, esencial para la higiene democrática de nuestra sociedad. Contamos con la capacidad de impactar que siempre muestra Democracia (en la galería T20). AFRICA ISN’T A COUNTRY

The current edition of SUMMA presents for the first time in Spain the project Africa Focus: displaying a selection of prestigious artists based in Africa, as well as artists from the diaspora, resident in America and Europe. Such diversity implies a clear difficulty in the understanding of “African” as a generalised concept, which goes beyond the so-called “Afropessimism” spread by the media, and whose origins stem from the colonial period. However, due to the socio-economic development promoted by the intensification of foreign investment and cultural tourism on the continent, as well as the countless exchanges made possible by technology, an unprecedented increase in circulation and interest in contemporary African art has arisen. Urgent problems like the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources and deforestation, the threat from religious fundamentalism, the frustrated promises of the post-colonial dream and the decline of modernism as a utopia are all vigorously explored by the continent’s artists. With the inclusion of a group of internationally outstanding African artists, SUMMA joins the imminent growth of African art collecting in Europe, a phenomenon to establish in the emergence of fairs dedicated exclusively to galleries, which represent artists from the continent in the cities of London and New York.

ÁFRICA NO ES UN PAÍS

La presente edición de SUMMA presenta el proyecto Africa Focus: desplegando una selección de prestigiosos artistas con base en Africa, así como artistas de la diáspora residentes en el continente americano o en Europa. Tal diversidad implica una clara dificultad en la comprensión de ‘lo africano’ como concepto generalizador que supere además el llamado ‘afropesimismo’ diseminado por los medios de comunicación y cuyos orígenes se encuentran en el periodo colonial. Sin embargo, debido al desarrollo socio-económico promovido por la intensificación de las inversiones extranjeras y del turismo cultural en el continente, se ha producido un incremento sin precedentes de circulación e interés en el arte africano contemporáneo. Problemáticas de orden urgente como la explotación indiscriminada de recursos naturales y la deforestación, la amenaza de los fundamentalismos religiosos, las promesas frustradas de la ilusión poscolonial y la decadencia del modernismo como utopía son exploradas vigorosamente por los artistas del continente. Con la inclusión de un grupo de artistas africanos destacados en la escena internacional, SUMMA se une al inminente crecimiento del coleccionismo de arte africano en Europa, fenómeno a constatar en la emergencia de ferias dedicadas exclusivamente a galerías que representan a artistas del continente en las ciudades de Londres y Nueva York.

TRAZOS

TRAZOS that have been left in the recent history of art, clearly perceptible in the present. In particular, artists and works from the 60s and 70s of the last century, that could help to complete collections, or provide less well-known pieces with more difficult access through the market. It is the area of the fair destined to grow most consistently in future years, when the orientation of the content leads to a principle of selection which is ever more evaluative and associated with the vision of the past that certain specialists might offer. For this edition we count on notable presences from Spanish art, our priority, and international art, our commitment. The extraordinary project of Darío Villalba for Luis Adelantado, his gallery. Rafael Ortiz displays a pair of very little, or not at all known, works by Luis Gordillo. An amazing showing from Galería Punto, also from Valencia: Manuel Vilariño, EQUIPO REALIDAD, Volf Vostell. Equally symphonic is the offer of graphic work from Galería Hispánica. Ferran García Sevilla is the contribution from Galería Fúcares. And Carles Tache presents a selection of objects created by Eduardo Arroyo, who has never stopped telling stories through whatever medium. Antonio Caro, the major Colombian conceptual artist presents “There is no art here”, an emblematic piece of 20th century Colombian art. Another Vacant Space presents the work of David Medalla, "Stitch in time" (1967), it is a beautiful work that SUMMA is proud to present in Madrid. David Medalla already has work in the Museo Reina Sofia and has been selected to show his well-known "Bubble Machine" in the next edition of Frieze.

TRAZOS que han quedado en la historia reciente del arte, claramente perceptibles en la actualidad. En particular, artistas y obras de los años 60 y 70 del siglo anterior, que pueden ayudar a completar colecciones, o proporcionar piezas menos conocidas o de más difícil acceso a través del mercado. Es el área de la feria destinada a un más consistente crecimiento en años futuros, cuando la orientación del contenido lleve a un principio de selección cada vez más aquilatado y asociado a la visión que del pasado ofrezcan determinados especialistas. Para esta edición contamos con presencias notables del arte español, nuestra prioridad, e internacional, nuestro compromiso. Extraordinario proyecto de Darío Villalba para Luis Adelantado, su galería. Rafael Ortiz muestra un par de obras de Luís Gordillo, muy poco, o nada, conocidas. Impresionante muestra de la también valenciana Galería Punto: Manuel Vilariño, EQUIPO REALIDAD, Volf Vostell. Igualmente sinfónica la oferta de obra gráfica de Galería Hispánica. Ferran García Sevilla es la aportación de Galería Fúcares. Y Carles Taché presenta una selección de objetos realizados por Eduardo Arroyo, que no ha dejado nunca de contar historias a través de cualquier soporte. Antonio Caro, el mayor artista conceptual colombiano presenta en la galería Cis-art "Aquí no cabe el arte", pieza emblemática del arte colombiano del siglo XX. Another Vacant Space presenta la obra de David Medalla "Stich in time" (1967), una obra bellísima que SUMMA se enorgullece de presentar en Madrid. David Medalla ya tiene obra en el Museo Reina Sofía y ha sido seleccionado para presentar en la próxima edición de Frieze, su conocida "Bubble Machine".

Madrid Foto wishes to be the response to the splendid production of Spanish photographs of the time, since it understands that supporting the national creation in this field can play a decisive role in the development of a large group of artists, who, in many cases, are recognised more outside than within Spain. The young and not so young people, with budding or consolidated careers or those waiting for the recognition that they deserve. We have come across a tendency that seems to dominate the current creation: an intimism that feeds on much diverse sources and elements such as poetry, magic or mystery, shaping documentalism that goes from the autobiography to generational photography or social life account. In many cases, it is pure photography, of high technical perfection and extraordinary formal quality. The genres are overthrown and we can find still lives, nudity , architectures or daily life scenes, always going beyond this capacity of distance contributed by the perfection of the technical procedures used. Alberto Schommer, in the gallery Aína Nowack/AAC, has presented us a multitude of characters that have entered our life through his vision of them. We should be thankful to TRINTA for giving us Jesús Madriñán, who has renewed photography for his generation, apart from providing an unmatched poetic intensity to his compositions. The intensity that Javier Codesal has added to memory, loss or death, makes him one of the most restless witnesses of our times. He shall come with CASA SIN FIN. Galería that also presents the ineffable Daniel G. Andújar, with a critical use of digital means that makes him swing between the real and the virtual world, between the city and its digital transposition to the network. Espacio Valverde presents the architectures of Luis Asín: a viewpoint that is ignited in the spectator to the extent of radically modifying his experience of architecture. We are convinced that this is it. 120

Madrid Foto quiere ser la respuesta a la espléndida producción de los fotógrafos españoles del momento, por entender que apoyar la creación nacional en este campo puede ser decisivo para el desarrollo de un nutrido grupo de artistas que, en muchos casos, obtienen más reconocimiento fuera que dentro de España. Jóvenes y no tan jóvenes, con carreras incipientes, consolidadas o a la espera del reconocimiento que merecen. Nos hemos fijado en una tendencia que parece dominante en la creación actual: un intimismo que se nutre de fuentes y elementos muy diversos, la poesía, la magia o el misterio, configurando un documentalismo que va de la autobiografía al retrato generacional o la crónica social. En muchos casos es una fotografía pura, de gran perfección técnica y extraordinaria calidad formal. Se subvierten los géneros y podemos encontrar bodegones, desnudos, arquitecturas o escenas de vida cotidiana, siempre trascendidos por esa capacidad de distancia que aporta la perfección de los procedimientos técnicos empleados. Alberto Schommer, en la galería Aína Nowack/AAC, nos ha presentado a multitud de personajes, que han entrado en nuestra vida a través de su visión de los mismos. Contar con Jesús Madriñán, que ha renovado el retrato para su generación, además de aportar una intensidad poética inigualable a sus composiciones, lo debemos agradecer a la galería TRINTA. La intensidad que Javier Codesal añade a la memoria, la pérdida o la muerte, lo convierte en uno de los testigos más inquietantes de nuestro tiempo. Vendrá con CASA SIN FIN. Galería que también presenta al inefable Daniel G. Andújar, con una utilización crítica de los medios digitales que le hace bascular entre lo real y lo virtual, entre la ciudad y su transposición digital en la red. Espacio Valverde presenta las arquitecturas de Luis Asín: una manera de mirar que prende en el espectador hasta modificar radicalmente su experiencia de la arquitectura. SUMMA brings together a selection of editorials presenting books related to art, design, architecture, poetry, illustration and artistic objects. It is a project initiated for the first time this year and commissioned by the editor, art critique and independent curator, Marisol Salanova. The current edition of the selection is composed of companies, such as Versos y Trazos (Valencia), lead by Merche Medina and José Ramón Alarcón, a publishing house of books for the younger ones, stories and poetry with illustrations by artists that delight the young readers. Moreover, poetry combined with art has an important presence, Adminimum (Murcia), lead by Beatriz Miralles, is a micro editorial project dedicated to the publication of poetic works with original illustrations in small format for all readers. On the other hand, Chucherías de Arte (Mérida, Extremadura), lead by Ceferino López, is an editorial specialising in illustration and photography. Editorial Micromegas (Murcia) lead by Javier Castro Flórez and Marisol Salanova, is a new publishing house of essays on contemporary art and theory of art that has published, among others, Alberto Ruiz de Samaniego, Carlos Salazar Fraile and Yayo Aznar. Nocapaper Books & More (Santander), lead by Noemí Méndez, is a publisher of monographs that brings together the trajectory of contemporary artists, also accompanied by graphic works, interventions, collages, that are a work of art in itself. But it is not just the national publishing houses that have been invited to this section. Vortex Publisher (Chile) lead by Gerhardt Rubio Swaneck, attending from America, is a publisher that generates the circulation of different creations in the artistic field, such as visual arts, architecture, photography and design, graphic works and books such as the recent one "Los Dictadores, (the subversive power of art)" by Adonay Bermúdez with a preface by Fernando Castro Flórez, that will be presented by its author and the curator during the fair. The journal of culture and thought Input (Madrid), lead by Hugo Álvarez, La Uña Rota, Arrebato and Editorial Delirio

SUMMA reúne una selección de editoriales que presentan libros relacionados con arte, diseño, arquitectura, poesía, ilustración y objetos artísticos. Se trata de un proyecto incorporado por primera vez este año y comisariado por la editora, crítica de arte y comisaria independiente Marisol Salanova. En la presente edición la selección está compuesta por firmas como Versos y Trazos (Valencia), dirigida por Merche Medina y José Ramón Alarcón, una editorial de libros ilustrados para los más pequeños, relato y poesía con ilustraciones de artistas que deleitan al público infantil. THE VALUE OF ART AND THE FUTURE OF COLLECTIONS.

It’s not pleasant to talk about the price of things and, with less reason, to confront the slippery question of the value of art which, on certain occasions, might seem “incalculable”. Still, in post-critical and ultramaterialistic times, it would seem typical of desecrators or even of cynics to reduce the artistic to commercial questions, as if the only legitimate (legitimising) “ideology” were the coarsest idealism or shameless sublimation. Isabelle Graw, in her lucid essay: “How much is art worth? Market, speculation and the culture of celebrity”, has pointed out that art is at once a special type of merchandise and a prototypical merchandise “which levelled the way for the conversion of all merchandise into designer goods”. Without doubt, in the creation of that commercial system, the processes of the articulation of knowledge have a specific role, already produced by artistic institutions, through exhibitions, with the dynamics of the symposium, or in magazines, art schools and academic publications. This course on “The value of art and the future of collections” is configured as a series of conversations with important collectors, experts in the art market, university professors and also with artists (agents of art who are astonishingly often denied a voice). Following a series of conferences carried out last spring (given by the artists Isidoro Valcárcel Medina and Juan Luis Moraza and by the curator and art consultant Jaime Lavagne), a series of three days of conversations, presentations and conferences are set to take place during the SUMMA fair, in which diverse viewpoints on the situation of collecting will be offered (focussing on individual projects, arising from corporate and gallery experience), the possibilities

EL VALOR DEL ARTE Y EL FUTURO DE LAS COLECCIONES

No apetece mucho hablar del precio de las cosas y, con menos razón, enfrentarse a la vidriosa cuestión del valor del arte que, en ciertas ocasiones, pareciera “incalculable”. Todavía, en tiempos post-críticos y ultra-materialistas, parecería propio de profanadores o incluso de cínicos reducir lo artístico a cuestiones mercantiles, como si la única “ideología” legítima(dora) fuera el idealismo más ramplón o la sublimación descarada. Isabelle Graw, en su lúcido ensayo ¿Cuánto vale el arte? Mercado, especulación y cultura de la celebridad, ha señalado que el arte es a la vez una mercancía especial y una mercancía prototípica “que allanó el camino para la conversión de todas las mercancías en bienes de marca”. Sin duda, en la constitución de ese sistema comercial, tienen un papel específico los procesos de articulación el conocimiento, ya generados desde instituciones artísticas, a través de exposiciones, con la dinámica de los simposios o en revistas, escuelas de arte y publicaciones académicas. Este curso sobre El valor del arte y el futuro de las colecciones está configurado como una serie de conversaciones con importantes coleccionistas, expertos en mercado del arte, profesores universitarios y también con artistas (un agente del arte al que asombrosamente se le suele negar la palabra). Tras una serie de conferencias realizadas en la primavera pasada (impartidas por los artistas Isidoro Valcárcel Medina y Juan Luis Moraza y por el comisario y asesor de arte Jaime Lavagne), se plantea durante las fechas de la feria SUMMA un ciclo de tres días de conversaciones, ponencias y conferencias en las que se ofrecerán perspectivas pluralistas sobre las situación del
