editor’s note It can be hard to believe that swimming, an activity where less clothing is preferrable, is actually a pivotal part of RL and SL fashion. Maybe it’s the art of strategically covering as little as possible without making someone feel too naked that makes swimwear so appealing to design, or maybe it takes us down to one of the basic purposes of fashion, making a second skin to express who we are. Either way, it leads to an enamourment with beach fashion that Second Style just cannot escape. In fact, the swimwear issue has become an annual Second style tradition, just like the Halloween issue. However, we never planned to have the two come out so close together. If you’re worried the Halloween issue may not make it out in time to help you in your search for the perfect party ensemble for Ocober 31st, take a deep breath because we’ve got you covered. This year, our halloween issue will be in the form of a mini-Mag, full of vibrant photos to spark your imagination. Keep your eyes peeled near the end of October for this special featurette, and until then enjoy issue 22 of Second Style-- poolside!

Starfish Starfish is a cover-up dress and bikini set. It’s one of those sets perfect for a whole day at the beach-- you can wear your bikini all the time and cover yourself while the temperature drops. The bikini part comes with two layers for top and bottom and the dress set with shirt, jacket, glitch pants and prim skirt with belt.

Candy Candy is a bikini and skirt set. Like the others, it’s a cute set for a day at the beach. t’s official. Summer has arrived in my area of the world, and I have the sunburn to prove it. While a trip to the beach may be fraught with dangers like sunburns, thong-wearing old men, and running out of cold things to drink, in your First Life, in your Second Life, all you need to worry about is looking dangerously cute. Designer Zaara Kohime, of {Zaara}, is a fairly new kid on the block, but she’s already wellestablished herself as the place to get quality traditional Indian style costumes. More recently, she’s branched out into western pieces with a definite Indian influence, and this eclectic hybrid has the fashionistas coming out in droves. Bright colours, sublime texturing and an eye for detail makes Xacuti one of my top picks for sexy beachwear this summer. A little risqué depending on your preferences, it’s available in three colour palettes, with two different halter top options. Decoy has been one of my must-shop stores since 16 | Second Style Magazine

I happened across it by chance last September, and her quality designs has made her a fashion favourite in many an avatar’s closet. Sanrio is another sexy suit with multiple options, where you can choose to bare as much or as little flesh as you dare. With colours ranging from Fire to Midnight Violet, there is something for everyone. Everyone has those days where they want to rock something a little more covered up, but still look ultra-cute. It used to be that one could not find a one-piece bathing suit anywhere on the grid, but these days, designers everywhere are recognizing that not everyone wants to wear a thong bikini, luckily for us. On the left is Beauty Avatar’s ‘Wheaton’ suit from their new Malice line, and on the right, ‘Stripes’ by the incomparable Nyte Caligari, of Nyte ‘n’ Day. If you’re looking for the perfect string bikini, then look no further than Beauty Avatar’s Malice line.

It comes with an optional pareo on the skirt layer, which is one of the best I’ve ever seen. But if you’re feeling a little more sexy, you can ditch the pareo and strut your stuff on the beaches of SL, leaving a lot less to the imaginations of the boys who will no doubt be drooling over you in this tiny little number. LaLa FooFoo’s Larue Laval burst onto the scene with the help of her more established RL sister (Starley Thereian), but has quickly established herself in her own right, creating quality clothing for a very reasonable price. At this year’s Lingerie & Beachwear Expo, I picked up her new and very cute print bikinis, then topped them off with the coordinated sheer cover-ups. Speaking of Expos (cough), all of the sandals worn in these pictures were picked up at this year’s extremely successful Footwear Expo, an event which I planned and put on for the aid of the ASPCA with the help of sponsors such as Rezzable and Starbrook Architecture. The Expo will be over by the time this article comes out, but you can pick them at their regular stores, all credited under each photo. So if you’ll excuse me now, I’m on my way to the beach in some of my sexy new beachwear. Meet me there?

hether it’s at the beach, poolside, or just running through the backyard sprinklers, getting wet is a summer tradition. To make a proper appearance at any aquatic event or gathering, it’s essential to be properly outfitted. And I’m not just talking about swimwear, either, although that’s a very good start. No, you’re going to need more than a pair of trunks. You’re also going to need accessories, equipment, and maybe some toys. What boy, of any age, doesn’t love his toys?

36 | Second Style Magazine

Shinichi Mathy’s collection of men’s swim trunks features bright tropical designs and fabric textures that look soft and comfortable. Nine different styles are available; here I’m wearing the “Golden Daze” trunks. And really, what says summer better than a colorful aloha shirt? To coordinate, I’ve also thrown on Shinichi’s “Tropical Blossom” style. Several different fabric prints are available—you know you’re going to need more than one. I can almost taste the Mai Tai now. Available at SHIKI Design (Jonetsu Isle2 RAKUEN 44, 37, 23). DarkLour Watanabe might not be the first designer to come to mind when I think about beach gear— how often do neko boys and girls go swimming, anyway? Whether you do the kitty thing or not, his swimwear and accessories might just be all you need. You can take home any or all from the collection: tank top, board shorts, flip-flops and beach towel, plus bikinis for the ladies. There are nine different designs to choose from; “Paw Print” is shown here. There’s also a store-logo’d freebie set. You actually get two different beach towels, one to wear over your shoulder, the other to throw on the sand and sit. The shoulder towel has flexi ends; the ground towel includes unlinked single and couples poseballs. While you’re there, check the generous freebies display for the retro-styled portable radio— it’s scripted with 137 color Continued on page 39 >

choices, musical note particle effects, and a “tuner” that changes your land’s audio stream. Available at Neko Gear (Ganesha 137, 206, 21). On the one hand there are the things you know you must have. On the other hand, there are the things you never knew you needed. Eponymous Trenchmouth knows this deep in his creative soul. His new “jelly” beach shoes for men may already be on your wish list, or you may have had no idea there was such a lack in your life. Either way, the world is better now that they’re in it. Your inventory may feel the same way. There are three different styles: Finz, a classic open sandal; Mavericks, a ventilated loafer, complete with side buckle; and Reef Rider, a casual slingback shoe. All are meticulously textured to resemble translucent flexible plastic, although to my amazement no transparent prims have been used. The Mavericks and Reef Rider styles feature drainage holes, so your feet may get wet but they’ll dry out quickly. So real, you can almost feel the jelly squish as you walk. Each style comes in six different colors. Shown here: Mavericks in Sea Grass. Available at the new JCS main store (La Fortuna 1 57, 65, 23). Any serious yet stylish diving enthusiast should be sure to check out Kaikou Splash’s diving gear and accessories. Kaikou’s line of gear includes diving masks and fins in different styles, plus a wide range of air tanks. Masks and fins are scripted for color change (mask by touch, fins via HUD, and the tanks

come in a wide range of styles featuring different metal finishes and decorative artwork, some slyly humorous. Available at Splash Aquatics (Gooruembalchi 112, 194, 70). In SL, even Michael Phelps (although he would undoubtedly miss his LZR Racer) might well wear a more traditional, non-high-tech racing suit by Birdy Shepherd. The simple, classic styling of these suits includes subtle shading, colorcoordinated stripes, identifying numbers in back and prim tie in front. Both square-cut suits (style “sq-3A” is shown here) and Speedo-style suits are available in a variety of color combinations. Birdy’s shop also features a selection of beachwear and other casual clothing. Available at JGD (Envy 33, 115, 21). An expanded version of this article will be published on the Men’s Second Style fashion blog at www. second-man.com. Be sure to look for it! Ryan is also wearing: “Thomas” skin by Tricky Boucher (Belleza). “Alex” hair by Kavar Cleanslate (Exile). Ryan is Editor in Chief of the Men’s Second Style fashion blog, available online at www.secondman.com. He lives in Otherland with his partner Sean.

Second Style Interview

ANNYKA BEKKERS By Iris Ophelia

40 | Second Style Magazine

Second Style: Can you tell us a little bit about how you found Second Life and got started? Annyka Bekkers: Well, I started about a year ago. I had been playing some other online games and some of my friends had been sneaking off into SL, so I decided to come look around. AB: I got hooked right away. I remember hanging around dancing to Sine Wave’s dances all night long and shooting the shit and just having a ball. SS: And how did you decide to start selling skins? AB: Well, that didn’t come for awhile. At first I was just into clubbing and hanging around at roleplay sims. I started dabbling with some tattoos. I made big flying blowpop full back tattoo, and I loved it but it kept ‘falling off’, so I wanted to put it permanently on a skin. And since you just cant do that with other skin, I had to make my own. AB: I’ve painted a lot in RL, so I figured how hard could painting a skin be? *laughs* SS: Famous last words, right? AB: Seriously. It took me almost 3 months. It helps if you’re obsessive. SS: Do you still have that tattoo?

AB: I do! SS: Can we see it? *smiles* AB: This could be hard to find. I haven’t worn it in like a year AB: Aaah! I flashed you! sorry! SS: I’ll survive. *laughs* AB: At one point I was going to be a tattoo artist, but that passed. Funny enough, after I made my skins I never even put the tattoo on it. AB: I wanna make this out of prims one day for my store. SS: So is this the origin of the name Blowpop? ‘Why a Blowpop’ I guess is the real question. AB: Well, actually, I used to use the name Annika Blowpop as my online name, and so I brought it over here. It’s been kinda like a personal branding thing for me. SS: So what do you like the most about designing skins?

AB: I mentioned before that skins are great if you’re obsessive, like I said. I love getting lost in the details. I can work on little finessy things for days on end. One thing about SL skins is because of the how imperfect the avatar is, I don’t think you could ever get them perfect, so there’s always some thing to work on and some way to improve them. AB: ... And I really enjoy making the makeups too! SS: What’s the bane of your designing career in SL? What really frustrates you most? AB: The bane? Packaging stuff. All the stuff that goes into putting my skins in the shop, it takes sooooo long. SS: What are your plans for Blowpop in the next few months? AB: More makeups for my Tuesday skins, definitely, and I’ve got a bunch of shapes I’m trying to get packaged up. Continued on page 45 >

AB: I’d love to do some some more novelty skins, and fantasy skins, but I’m always way behind. AB: And I really would love to make a few clothes items! SS: Outstanding. Who are your favourite other designers in SL? AB: Oh god, there are so many designers I really admire, I could start rattling off a long list. *laughs* SS: Go for it! AB: I LOVE antonia Marat’s stuff. I love the styles and just the sheer quality. AB: I love Starley Thereian and Tuli Asturias for skins. Starley’s skins were actually my first skin love in SL. AB: Who I really really admire most are all the shoe makers, like Tesla and Maitreya, Shiny Things, and nowadaays I’m totally in love with J’s and those prim toes. If I had the head for 3d, I’d love to make shoes.

like a raw material, and they really run with it and make cool stuff with it. That always gives me a thrill!

SS: It’s hard to make them without sculpties and still compete, these days. Shoes more than anything else in SL fashion it seems. AB: Yeah, sculpties really changed the whole shoe business! As more people are mastering them, we’re seeing better and better new stuff all the time. SS: Here’s one I know a lot of readers may ask: why are you always so pale, Annyka? AB: Hahahaha, cuz I’m always cooped up in my workshop! SS laughs. SS: Any messages for current and soon-to-be fans of your work? AB: I just want to thank everybody who’s supported me, and I love seeing folks wearing my skins. I really get such a huge thrill when I look through places like Flickr and see people’s pictures in Blowpop skins and what they do with them. Thats what really makes ‘em come alive. By Genevieve Lutetia I have a long history with all things high-waisted – mostly a history of avoidance and mockery, but it’s history nevertheless. Like micro-minis and low-riding jeans, the high-waist fashion phenomena seems best suited to snake-hipped designers and their skinny brethren. What better

style of clothing to suggest curves on those who resemble ironing boards? But what of those of us blessed with actual curvage – could we, too, embrace, the high-waisted revolution? How does one dress to both emphasise and flatter that mark of femininity – the hip?

Second Style Magazine | 63

Chic Savvy <Continued from page 63

As a teenager in the ‘90’s, I was utterly devoid of fashion sense. If it was unflattering and unshapely, then I was more than likely to don it. I was grunge at heart, but with an ethnic bent that saw me pairing (inasmuch as slapping on the first things to cover the necessities can be called pairing) harem pants with knee length cardigans and dirty t-shirts. Yeah, I was that girl. I only had two hard and fast fashion rules: 1. No skinny belts. 2. Nothing was ever to be tucked in. Both have stuck with me through my infinitely more fashionable 20’s, which I think is where highwaisted clothes and I have come undone. You need to tuck. Tucking is a novelty to me, and still requires some careful mirror consideration before leaving the house. You also need to think sleek and you need to think balance. And balance is the 64 | Second Style Magazine

unexpected joy of high-waisted pants, skirts and shorts. No longer need it be your fashion nemesis – you know, the fashion styles you wish would die a speedy death along with boots over jeans, wayfarer sunglasses and ironic Grandma-knitted jumpers, likely to feature ducks in a row – so long as balance is struck between your shoulders and your hips, there is happiness in a high-waist. Off the shoulder, boatneck or sculptural tops are a natural fit when your bottom half is emphasising your hips. A Thimbles skirt with a Dutch Touch boatneck top worked a treat, though with the horizontal stripes, I looked a bit too Olympic swimmer for my tastes. A Tres Blah vest rebalanced the neckline and complemented the colour spectrum, and some hints of white

from a Gisele necklace and some Maitreya socks lightened things up. It was quite the revelation to me to discover grey and brown are well-suited to one another - like cheese and fruit or Kate Moss and motherhood, there seemed something fundamentally wrong with the match-up. Blessedly, the colours go splendidly well together. The final touch to this hipster-sleek ensemble was the crisp and elegant Erin skin from La Sylphide, light in tone, creamy in texture and delicious to behold. Perhaps because high-waisted shorts demand a certain imperiousness, as well as a good pilates instructor to tone the limbs and to pummel the behind, there can be no wall-flowers when wearing a high-waisted ensemble. Ibizarre’s knit

bolero, with it’s sculpted muffler and scrunched up sleeves squeals diva to me, as evidenced by the Torridwear look-at-me pose. Coupled with a (kara)Mia pout, a flash of red from the Ornamental Life tank and enormous Yummy glasses, these VG Republic denim shorts transcend their (possible) lederhosen origins, ready to stalk through society with a glower and a sneer. Bucking the trend with a sleeveless ensemble, the mint tank and matching Boing Fromage shoes balance the pale yellow- and tan-striped Emery capris to a tee. A light and summery take on the theme, this look harks back to more innocent times, with cute Curio hair and Aden’s virginallooking skin. The Swallowtail corsage picks up on the green and offers some contrasting warmth to

Emery’s high-wasted denim shorts were perhaps the largest challenge of this journey into highwaistedness. Up over the belly button, with seams and zips to emphasise just how high they really go and… could it be?… acid wash to boot? MichaMi’s two-toned blouse with batwing sleeves provides the perfect foil to the shorts, and as an added bonus, the beige belt section perfectly frames the Creamshop necklace. To ensure the sleeves didn’t seem to cut directly across the torso, a Sey plaid shirt elongates the

To truly rock anything high-waisted, it takes a bit of confidence and few tricks to make the most of the cut and your body shape. Though my avi sports curves that might be better termed ‘gentle swells’, the beauty of this style is it really does work across body types – short legged, pearshaped and ample-all-over alike. You might need to tiptoe out of your fashion comfort zone, but they don’t say va-va-voom over girls in mumus, now, do they?

Water was the theme of this month’s issue, and so in keeping with that theme I am bringing you items from past shows with a touch of water. Water for most of us is calming, soothing, and cooling. So it makes sense that many fashion shows in Second Life™ are set in a watery background. Models, designers, and audience members need all the relaxation they can get when fighting lag in the name of fashion. The clothing can be anything under the sun, but it seems that under the runway is often a serene liquid layer. 1. From the outstanding Black Swan shows, is Anessa Stine wearing the Black Swan Ballerina Tutu by Eshi Otawara 2. Rebel Hope’s The Wish Bringer, and 3. from Moxie Polano , the Black Swan Gown. The whole experience of the show was amazing, which included riding a black feather to the runway that was set right on the water. Next from the Runway Diva show presented by the Ewing agency is 4. Haydin Romano wearing the Baiastice Indi Colors Bathing Suit. This suit comes with a bag, sunglasses, hat, and a detachable prim shirt in two sizes. Shoes are

from Stiletto Moody. The models in this show walked out onto the runway right through a cascading waterfall, straight across into a long flowing pool. Also from the Ewing agency Runway Diva show is 5. Haruka Kish wearing the eLDee Atoll black hat, Atoll black swim cover-up with the Blaze Radioactive SwimSuit. Finishing off the outfit are sandals by Maitreya. This show was unique in the fact that the Ewing agency featured their models’ sense of style and fashion having each model put together their own outfits based on the swimwear theme. I couldn’t resist adding 6. Takeshi Kiama from the Second Pride 08 fashion show. Here he wears silk pajama pants from the Eccentric Recluse boxed set. Doesn’t he look great, and hey it counts, notice there is water behind him? Until next month I leave with another famous quote, “On matters of style, swim with the current, on matters of principle, stand like a rock.” Who would of known Thomas Jefferson had an opinion on fashion!
