Our February issue will not be all candy hearts and flowers. We’ve found some clever ways to give you lots of looks for you, your home, and possibly your loved ones, without any sort of lovey dovey overkill. To decorate your home, Kenzie has stepped in for Jennaa for our 43rd issue’s Fashionable Furnishings, giving us a home that will fill up your heart with warmth and send you shopping. Kenzie has also kept up with her Take Two, giving the girls AND boys some looks you can take right to the bed! Ely’s all new Fantasy spread gives us a look at a very unusual love affair, meanwhile Ry has taken us on destination this month, for a very romantic Valentine getaway idea. While we are thinking about love - Fayne’s Fresh Faces is featuring the love child new store: Mon Tissu, you won’t want to miss that read and interview with the brilliant duo. James’ Bleeding edge as well as his February photo spread stray from the pink and red that you might have been expecting, giving us some extraordinary visuals, the later still romantically inspired in a unique way. To celebrate some of the month’s other fun events our guest photographer Rosenrot Nemeth is taking us on a walk down the red carpet in a tribute to award shows. Ali’s rounded things out in her Mini Guide’s clever jewelry picks, aimed at readers who are looking for something for their someone special, and I’ve also given you quite a few accessory suggestions that will sparkle and shine just like the apple of your eye in this month’s Editor’s Picks. Finally, Sophia’s sharing yet another amazing interview with our February Second Style Icon – Kyoot’s Saeya Nyanda, and of course…we couldn’t leave the issue without a little bit of valentine’s lingerie with our gorgeous Gabby! Even though our pages aren’t plastered in all things romance…we do wish you a very Happy Valentine’s, and hope you will continue to be ours <3

Fresh Faces | Mon Tissu by Fayne Khandr
“If it looks good WEAR IT!” Such is the concise and truly excellent fashion philosophy of Anouk and Elie Spot. It’s not uncommon for designers in Second Life to work on more than one brand in their virtual lifetime. While you may be more familiar with Anouk Spot (Julliette Westerburg) and Elie Spot (Emma Gilmour) for their work on Tres Blah and Surf Couture respectively, if you ever shopped at Armidi you probably also owned more than a couple of their creations. Anouk started creating in 2005, on a mission to dress up her avatar in pretty clothes. Elie began work in 2006, not keen on the abundance of club clothing. Beach wear was more her style, so she began to make things for herself before friends suggested she set up shop. Their paths crossed when they worked together for Armidi, and during the three years they became close, finding they shared a love of girly things and had similar taste in clothing styles. More recently they formed the idea for a brand of their own, and in December 2010 mon tissu opened its doors. As both Anouk and Elie run successful independent ventures it’s interesting to learn why they set about on something new. “We both have a love for the same style of clothing,” Anouk told me, “and we wanted to do a project together where we could make sweet and sophisticated clothing. And we felt that by joining forces we could handle more frequent releases together rather than on our own.” I felt impelled to confirm that there’s no danger of SL losing either Tres Blah or Surf Couture, and Anouk was wonderfully reassuring. “No, we are both still dedicated to our own brands.” mon tissu has a good stock of well-made casual clothing with a certain elegance and refinement about it. Anouk describes the most recent releases from the Sunday Afternoon collection as ‘light and colourful’. “Our goal with each release is to inspire head to toe outfits. So we try to get in a good mix of some tops and bottoms.” When asked about the inspiration for their creations, Anouk says “It’s a real life style that we really like and wanted to see it as a more consistent part of Second life fashion. It’s just something we haven’t seen too much in Second Life.” If you’ve visited mon tissu then you’ll be somewhat familiar with the Lula sim. An experience in itself, I couldn’t resist asking Anouk about the ideas and the build. “Lula
is Lamb Bellic’s and my baby. We both really wanted to get a sim and one day the opportunity came up so we decided to just go for it. Then we had both seen a Miss Dior commercial and really loved the style and feel of it. We also knew that only one person was capable of making our dreams come true and that was Turnip Sorbet. So we asked her to come on board as the builder and she accepted and the rest is history. We all put our hearts into Lula.” The French influence runs through from the store name to those chosen by the designers. Elie chose hers after admitting she has a penchant for “short names that start with E!” and Anouk grins as she recalls “I liked the little girl’s name from ‘Chocolat’… and it was French.” The name of the store itself means ‘my cloth’ and fitted with the cute feel Anouk and Elie were aiming for. It’s not all work and no play for Anouk and Elie though. “It’s rare that we get a chance to relax in SL, but we both love shopping and laughing with friends. Just socialising and having a good goofy time.” The more you talk to this lively pair, the more apparent this side of them becomes. I ask both to tell me something about themselves that most people wouldn’t know, and Elie is first to volunteer: “I dream of having my own makeup tutorial channel on youtube!” She laughs, and Anouk offers: “I like to creep people out by acting like I’m obsessed with them. Nothing wrong with that, right?” I decline to comment, obviously… Elie also mentions a real life creative venture she runs with her sister in law selling homemade and organic soaps and body products on Etsy. If you’re curious, you can visit the shop at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ pemberleyhandmade mon tissu is releasing regularly and enchanting more and more fashion conscious residents as word spreads. Anouk is working on a female skin at the moment, with Elie designing the male counterpart, and Anouk promises a variety of releases in the future concentrating expansion on accessories with more bags, jewellery and shoes as well as pretty clothing. “We feel like Mon Tissu is more of a little mom and pop shop,” Anouk says. “We’re not trying to be a huge force in SL. We enjoy standing behind the register while people are shopping and reminding them to grab a cupcake before they leave. We just hope people enjoy the experience.”
IN BRIEF My personal style is: Elie: Colorful Anouk: Vintage and pretty My favourite SL Designer is: Elie: Nylon Pinkney Anouk: Toast Bard What excites you about SL?: Elie: So many people from all around the world and the creativity. Anouk: Meeting new and different people and also the creativity people ooze. A phrase I use too often is: Elie: “Sweet Moses” Anouk: “Blah” I’m good at: Elie: Watching makeup tutorials on youtube! *Laughs* Anouk: Shopping! I’m not so good at: Anouk: I dont have a very thick skin. Elie: I’ll second that for myself. If I had no fear, I’d: Elie: Have my own makeup tutorial youtube channel! Anouk: I would find Jude Law and force him to marry me. My most treasured virtual possession is: Elie: My piko piko heart hammer. You bonk people on the head and it makes a really cute noise and hearts fly everywhere. Anouk: My tableau bubble pipe! It just looks super fly.

Fashionable Furnishings Home Is Where The Heart Is By Makenzie Irling Username.... Password.... My Home.... Login. Home, a small word that carries a big impact. Regardless of whether it’s rl or sl, your home is your space. The place where you feel comfortable, at ease and can sneak away from the craziness of the world (sometimes at least). Instead of focusing on the typical Valentine’s decor this month, hearts, roses, bad poetry, etc, etc. I thought of the well known phrase “Home is where the heart is” and put together a design plan that featured the comforts of home with a tiny bit of a romantic side.

The skybox from {what next} was the perfect setting for the vision I had of wide open windows and a feeling of simplicity. I focused the bedroom around the canopy bed from *KOPI*, it was the touch of romance that I was looking for without being over cute and frilly. The chairs from Gbberish were a great balance of masculine and feminine, structured and creative. I attempted to pull that balance throughout the whole space, providing a look that would be welcoming to anyone.

Style Icon Saeya Nyanda by Sophia Harlow
Photography by Saeya Nyanda & Rowan Keats
Saeya Nyanda of Kyoot has written in her real world tab of her profile “saying nothing sometimes says the most. I briefly hesitated on asking her to be our next Icon because of how much she appears to value her privacy, but in the end I decided that a peek into who Saeya is would be an excellent read. Plus, how much more of an Icon can you get than a designer who constantly is growing, stepping up her game and coming up with new and exciting ideas? Continued on page 46 > Second Style Magazine | 45
Style Icon | Saeya Nyanda < continued from page 45
Describe yourself in 50 words or less. I will be counting, so do not cheat! Tough question for me. I guess I’m a pretty big idealist, one who would like to be more of a rational optimist. I like to think I’m kind. I’m definitely way too spontaneous, I get bored easily.. antsy, even. I’m definitely a lil goofy and neurotic. I love honest people.. you know those people that are just so unashamed, unabashed and make no excuses for who they are.. insecurities and all. Those people are always my heroes and I certainly aim to be more that way. That is so way more than fifty words. Kyoot for me is one of those brands that is constantly evolving. You will drop an adorable dress/shirt/pants one week and the next week? An epic home furnishing item. Or gorgeous tattoo makeup layers. Where do you find your inspiration? I find it *everywhere*. So much so, that... it keeps me in this constant state of “Omg too many options, what should I make?!?!” - I always wish I had more hours in the day so could get all my ideas out. Tell us about how you started designing in SL. What prompted you to start? How much do you personally think your style has changed from your early days of designing? I had been in the design industry in RL for years but I knew nothing about creating in SL. I started building first. The Photosphere was the very first thing I ever made and I knew so little about building I asked my friend Amelia Case to help me cut a sphere. After that I made some prefabs, read some books about texturing and eventually got into clothing. Zabitan Assia from FORM helped me make my first top (the Snake Charmer Shirt) and with some advice from him and a few other friends, I slowly got into clothes making. I don’t think my style has changed all that much.. I suppose I’m a little less dark these days, but that’s not a conscious choice I made. I just tend to make whatever strikes me in any moment. I do miss the darker days of Kyoot and do have plans to revisit them. I think Kyoot at the moment has a lot of everyday, hanging out with your friends clothing... I’d like to keep doing that but add in some more unique pieces again. What do you hope for, in regards to your brand? Ultimate dream for Kyoot..is? Aw, I like this question. Ultimate dream for Kyoot would be to be putting out super high quality items, of all sorts. I’m really trying to focus on quality these days. I’m not quite where I want to be in regards to quality but I’m getting there. I’d like to stay small. I’d like to be the store that you can go to when you’re bored that always has at 46 | Second Style Magazine
least one item you want. I suppose quality and a good mix of unique items is where I want Kyoot to be. That being said - will you start designing hair again? No way, Jose. I’m done with hair. I didn’t get into it all that much, but I did enough to know that creatively... it’s a tough gig - one that doesn’t come all that easily to me. I have mad respect for hair designers, but yeah... Kyoot’s hair days are done. I have to admit that I shop from your vendor ads quite a bit. I love love your style! I think we met because I was being annoying and asking you about a particular hair in an ad. Who are some of your favorite designers in SL? I have so many favorites. But the ones that continually fascinate me with their ability to make beautiful, high quality items are Fade Dana, Ivy Graves, Sebastien Aries, Julliette Westerburg, Keiko Morigi and Del May. I get so excited when I see new releases from any of them. I love a lot of other designers too, but those are my main sl heroes. Sometimes I feel a little mean during these interviews and ask questions like this one - I am going into your inventory and deleting all your skins but one - which one would you want me to save and why? SO MEAN. Hm. I wear so many different ones... and whatever one I happen to be in love with at the time is one you would have to pry from my dead hands. At the MOMENT, that is the new Illusory line. Also, it would be hard to part me from my &bean, Dutch Touch and Fashionably Dead skins. Tell me what would be your perfect Second Life day. Strong coffee, while I sort out my to-do list. Being deep in some sort of creative flow for hours and hours. Finishing that item and releasing it and then watching a movie with my boyfriend and friends... I’m pretty lucky as those days aren’t all that rare. I just did a Kyoot search in my inventory and the oldest item I found was the snake charmer skirt and it appears I purchased it in 2007. It is still cute! Do you wish you had the ability to delete certain designs of yours from inventories across the grid? Looking back at some of your older stuff do you have moments of...”WTF was I thinking?” Yes. I have TONS of those moments. I would make everyone delete a few items I’ve made, actually. But, since I can’t do that, I’ve just taken them out of the shop and tried to do it better next time around. Continued on page 49 >

Style Icon | Saeya Nyanda < continued from page 46 Your biggest SL regret? I’m not sure I have one but, whatever I may regret, I appreciate what I’ve learned from my mistakes and I try not to harp on them. Now I have to ask the positive spin of the last question - what is the biggest lesson you think you have learned from Second Life? I’ve learned the same valuable lessons here that I’ve learned in life, really. Try to be kind, stay positive and above all, have a sense of humor... especially about myself. Music is a hugeeeee deal for me so I always ask for what you view as your life song. What is one song that you think describes the place you are right now in your life. So, so, tough. I’m too all over the place to just choose one. But at the moment I’m really into Fink, Menomena, Blind Pilot and The Gadsdens. I pretty much have all of them on repeat all day long, these days. I typically ask if you kiss on the first date but...I know that you are currently celebrating your 3 year anniversary with your boyfriend. Congrats! How do you balance your real life and your second life? Is it hard to juggle?
if you could bring back any one designer which would it be? Ginny Talamasca. Not only do I miss her being on this earth but I would love so much to see where Last Call (or anything she created) would be today. Last question - what is your life passion? What is the one thing you hope you bring across about yourself in either life? I know - I saved the easy one for last. How existential of you... and so, so hard to answer. My life’s passion I would say is experiences. Experiencing anything I can, in every way possible. I found this little image once on Tumblr that said “I dwell in possibility” and it rang so true for me. I think the one thing I’d want to bring across in either life is that honesty I mentioned earlier. Honesty in what I create, honesty in what I do, honesty about who I am and not feeling ashamed of any of it. I don’t know if I will ever fully accomplish that but I certainly strive for it. Saeya - thank you so much for being willing to share so much of yourself with us. I know it isn’t always the most easy thing in the world to be so open about who you are and what you inspire to be but you did an amazing job. I look very forward to see what direction you take Kyoot into next.
Aw, thank you. He’s the best. In regards to balance... hah. I’ve always had problems with being a work-a-holic, no matter what job I’ve had. I think when I have balance between SL and RL it’s always when I’ve set little boundaries for myself. For example, “I’m only going to work for X amount of hours then I’m going to go do X thing in RL. Etc. Your brand is well known, but you stay very quiet. Kudos on that, by the way. Tell us five things about you that we don’t know. I badly want to go to Iceland one day. I don’t watch much television but I am obsessed with Californication. I have a degree in audio engineering but never use it. I’m obsessed with white. Annnnnd I can only draw with a computer, if I try to draw with my hands it looks like a 5 year old created it. Tada. If you could take one of your designs and put them in everyone’s inventory...what would it be? Don’t be shy - totally brag, it’s okay <3. I think I would put the first version of the Silent sim. The grayscale one. I think that’s one of the things I’m most proud of. It was great for pictures and I often hear people say they miss it. Plus, everyone should have a Swirly Cyclone shrine. I know you have been in SL for quite a while and have seen great designers come and go -

For The Jewel Of Your Heart By Alicia Chenaux
February is a short month, but it could feel longer if you don’t give the love of your SLife something awesome for Valentine’s Day. Luckily, there are several amazing jewelers in Second Life! From gold to silver, pearls to diamonds, you can always find something for the one you love best. Most of the following stores have gift cards or a gift option available, or are on the Marketplace.
Earthstones Bali Crescent set, $499L
One of the biggest names in the world of Second Life jewelry definitely has to be Earthstones. With absolute exquisite detail, Earthstones is a store I would consider the “gold standard” for jewelry in Second Life. They sell both casual and formal jewelry, wedding ring sets, and they do have jewelry for both men and women. Last year they also started branching out more into home and décor under the name EarthDwellings. Not new to Second Life, but under a revamped name, comes MOOD by Jori Watler. The jewelry at MOOD is bold and bright, definitely for those times that you want to make a statement. If you enjoy more of a modern style for your jewelry, or you need something big to hit the clubs in, then this is most definitely the jewelry store for you. I’ve always said that I was born in the wrong era, but luckily at Dark Mouse there is an awesome selection of vintage inspired jewelry. With vintage jewelry, you get that special combination of boldness with soft feminine touches that I just adore. If you aren’t checking out the jewelry at Dark Mouse, then you’re missing out on a ton of goodness. If you like a more delicate sparkle [not blinging!], then U&R Dogs is the place for you. When I first became aware of this store, I almost went nuts, because everything was just so pretty! I haven’t had to change my mind in that time, and I still go crazy when I see they have a new release. U&R Dogs also sells pretty prim nails with rings just so you can feel just a little extra fancy.
MOOD Downtown Glam Necklace $225L Sorella Cuff, $250L
Dark Muse Vintage 50’s Pearls & Diamonds set, $200L
U&R Traumerei Rings, $150L Villeneuve Bracelet, Jewelry Expo Gift

Out with the old and in with the new. That is what the new year is supposed to be about, right? For me, that means heading into the attic to do some cleaning.
