This is Second Style’s 4th Anniversary issue. In a virtual world where a week is the equivalent of a month and where people come and go so quickly, 4 years is an impressive accomplishment. We’ve come a long way from that first issue, and have seen so many changes in the fashion world that is Second Life. The creative way that designers have pushed the seemingly limitless barriers of a virtual fashion world is what makes the pages and content of our magazine as amazing as it today. Keeping up with a monthly publication, that has a staff of fewer than 20; in a sometimes quirky platform is a daunting task to say the least. The work starts before the previous issue has even been released, and continues on right up to the night before it hits the blog. Myself, HeatherDawn, and the entire staff put all of our efforts into giving you the very best images and ideas to look at, the most up to the moment fashion pieces, and the details on where you can purchase one of your very own! This issue celebrates everything that makes up our virtual world, with the special addition of the much anticipated Stylies awards. The Stylies have been an annual tradition, where the public nominates their favorites, and then votes on a winner in each category. So be sure to check it out and see if your favorites have won! We are also welcoming Fayne Khanr and Marc Gellner this issue. Marc will be putting his full attentions on giving the guys something to read! YAY for men’s fashion, we know you boys really get the short end of the stick, so to speak. So keep an eye out, he plans on giving you all shopping lists. Fayne has taken over the Fresh Faces piece, which as many of you know was Ana Lutetia’s “baby” forever. We were so sad to see Ana go, as she has been a mainstay of Second Style Magazine, and one of the best people I know, in either world. But, she is off focusing on her real life, and we are happy to support her in all that she does. Fayne has taken on this project with much excitement, and is really looking forward to giving the piece some personal touches, which everyone will love. Second Style Magazine hopes to be around for yet another 4 years, and to continue to improve, and change with the times. We thank you, all of our readers for your continued support, not only with the magazine, but also with the blog, and with the Second Style Island sim. HeatherDawn and I also want to thank our staff, for your patience, dedication, and flexibility. This magazine would not be what it is, without you. <3

Fresh Faces | Willow by Fayne Khandr “Do what you love even if it’s weird.” When a designer presents that as their general philosophy, it’s difficult not to be intregued. Weezey Warwillow, owner of the Willow brand, has been designing in Second Life for about twelve months, setting up her store in April of this year. Stocking clothing and furniture, Weezey describes her fashion collection as vintage-modern, her boho chic separates and dresses hand-drawn with a distinctive quality to them.
Describe your brand: Vintage-Modern-GypsyChic Where do you hang out (in SL)?: *Laughs* In my studio! I don’t have much of a social life. What excites you about SL?: The community. There are so many different people from all over, its wonderful to meet them. What’s your favourite design to date?: I would say the Floral Dresses, plus they seem to be a big hit with customers.
Talking with Weezey reveals a lot about her personality. When asked about herself, she tells me: “I’m an artist in real life and I’ve always loved fashion! When I was little, I used to pull apart my Barbies’ clothes and sew them back together into crazy outfits. I love designing in SL because it combines my love for fashion with my love for drawing.”
Describe your personal style: I’m style bi-polar. I can be preppy one day and a complete hippie the next.
While still a new brand, Weezey seems keen to make her mark on the fashion scene, involving herself in community events. Recent hunt participation and an appearance at the Alphabet Soup Bazaar have seen Willow more widely worn, and taking second place in the Tableau Summer Festival Photo Contest has also raised Willow’s profile.
I’m not so good at: Sleeping.
Clothing design is high on the agenda but Weezey also takes great pride in her furniture which she described to me as a mixture of rustic and mid-century. The pieces are low prim, simply styled with clean, straight lines to suit most spaces. When I ask her what the future holds, she replies: “I’m starting to get more and more into sculpting prims so I’m hoping for lots more dresses and some pants with sculpted cuffs. I’d also love to do jewelry since I make it in real life.”
12 | Second Style Magazine
Favourite SL Designer?: I have to choose?! There are so many I don’t know if I can. I’m good at: Staying awake much too late (and probably being on SL). My most treasured (virtual) possession is: Any and all of my Lamb hairs and my Oracul AO. If I wasn’t a fashion designer, I might have been: In SL... a builder.

Oh, Those Posers By Alicia Chenaux
I always loved the beautiful photography that Second Style really is known for. As the anniversary issue approached, I thought about the people that make it possible for us to take beautiful photos in Second Life. Who am I talking about? The posemakers, of course! I have a complete love affair with poses, as I’m sure you all do. Without the wonderful poses, we’d all be standing around with a hand on our hip, looking lost. Narrowing it down was tough, but here are my four favorite pose stores. Starting the list with the oldest of the four stores, ImpEle! These poses are just perfect for fashion. Posemaker Sai Pennell has her own fashion blog; Fashion Labyrinth, so she really understands how to make a pose so that clothing is shown off beautifully without too many strange angles. ImpEle also has couples poses, which of course are just as sweet as the posemaker herself. I became aware of aDORKable Poses last year at the Shoe Expo, and am I ever glad! Poser Adorkable Peapod does some amazing prop poses. Who doesn’t need props, am I right? Fresh and fun, these poses are wonderful for when you just want to play around and be… well, dorky!
IsabellaGrace Baroque is just as quirky and cute as her pose store, Olive Juice. Bella’s poses are really cute, and she seems to make just whatever happens to pass through her mind on any given day. From Alice in Wonderland poses to poses to slap your friends with, and also some great cute props, you can always find something here for your photos. Rounding off the list is one of the newest pose stores on the grid, Exposeur. Posemaker RubyStarlight Writer came bursting out of the gate in March of this year, and has been going full force ever since. Ruby does poses for fashion, for fun, and also for couples, friends, and groups. With one or more releases every week, this posemaker doesn’t look like she has any plans to slow down any time soon.
The Annual Second Style Stylies The Second Style Stylies are a yearly tradition now, in which we allow the readers to choose their favorites amongst numerous categories. This year we’ve decided to add something a little more exciting for the winners in the way of an actual “Stylies Award” You might have noticed the cover of this issue? Each winner will be receiving their personalized Stylie in-world. We’d like to thank Ryker Beck for creating the amazing sculpted statue for Second Style, and hope you all love it as much as we do!

Fashionable Furnishings | Desing Your Own Designing your own home and its interiors is the ultimate form of self-expression and because we are all different, we want our homes to reflect our individuality while having the highest quality items to suit our budget. Finding quality home decor pieces in SL which are as unique as you, can be a challenge. This month I am sharing some of my personal favorite items and some pieces that I can’t live without. I have also featured some amazingly distinctive items that I simply adore. Some of which are a little outlandish and quirky, but nonetheless….unique and individual. Starting out in the SL home decor industry is daunting and it genuinely is a challenge to source quality items that suit your personality. The featured items are from a diverse group of designers. Some have already created successful labels and stores while others are only recently emerging and displaying the talent and creativity to become equally successful. Some of the items are old favorites from my personal collection, while others have only just been released in the marketplace. I sincerely hope you find something here that makes your home as individual as “YOU”!

Evangeline Miles by Sophia Harlow
Photography by Evangeline Miles
Shortly after starting in Second Life, Evangeline Miles found herself in an in-world relationship with someone who wanted to partner and have a huge wedding. She started to look for a dress and found none that she loved. Some were too big, others didn’t fit right. Nothing was perfect and our pixel version of Goldilocks was just not having any luck in her wedding dress search. Instead of whining about it, she decided she was going to make one, even though she had NEVER made anything in SL before. Didn’t matter, she was going to have the perfect dress and to do so she had to do it herself. Evie ended up falling more in love with her creation then the man she was about to partner and have a SL wedding with so she kept the dress but not the guy. After that she decided she was going to open a little store, and she found a space next to the VKC dog walking park that was 250L a week rent. All she hoped was that she would sell enough to pay her rent.

Fast forward to current day - 3 years later...her little store turned into the engine that could…which grew into one of the most fabulous stores on the grid, Evie’s Closet. Evie’s designs are, well they are heavenly. The textures, the styles…each show the thought and dedication she puts into them. I am thrilled that she agreed to be the Fashion Icon for our Anniversary Edition because she truly is an icon of determination, talent and so very much more, as you are about to find out. SH:Describe yourself to me in 50 words or less. EM: Curious, creative-type with a big imagination and a fetish for beautiful things. SH: Share with us 3 things that drive you crazy about being a designer in SL. EM: 1. The limitations. There’s so many gorgeous things I’d like to be able to translate into prims, and it’s such a struggle sometimes to get something looking right. I find I have to stay very flexible with my vision for an outfit, because some things just aren’t possible... yet. 2. The body mesh. I think anyone who has ever tried making clothing can acknowledge the illogical way that thing is put together. System layers and I have come to something of an understanding, but it’s still time-consuming to get it really right. 3. The change in my Second Life from a social environment to a working one. I rarely log in to do anything unrelated to Evie’s Closet and while I try to keep the process fun, I do struggle with balance and I know a lot of content creators feel the same way. Someone very dear to me once described it as being the person who is serving the drinks at a party. You’re AT the party, but you just can’t throw away the tray and dance. SH: Now 3 things that make you keep designing. EM: 1. The total rush of making something you feel is really ‘right’ - the best version it can be. 2. Then there’s the self-esteem which comes from taking a basic skill, adding to it, refining it and turning it into something substantial like Evie’s Closet. 3. And finally, it’s the people who are nice enough to come in and appreciate my work both verbally and financially. I’m fortunate enough to have some of the nicest customers on the grid. SH: Your designs are gorgeous, elaborate and so well made…you really seem to put your heart into each dress. Are you also an artist in your physical life? EM: I guess I’m one of those people who everyone talks about in RL as having “so much potential”. I think it’s a subtle way of saying you’ve not quite lived up to it yet as far as they’re concerned and I think it’s because I do a lot of dabbling. I’ve tried painting, sculpting, drawing, photography... all of the traditional arts, but I wouldn’t call myself a real life ‘artist’. This is really the first time I’ve felt like I’ve found a medium in which I can relax, let go and really explore how to express and present what I want to show to other people. Maybe it’s because compared to those traditional arts, virtual world content creation is relatively new, and there’s less of an expectation about how a thing ought to look, or what techniques should be used. I’m very happy to be an online artist and I’m so appreciative of the fact that people identify my work as ‘art’ and not just as ‘a dress’. SH: Not to sound all pervy, but what are you wearing right now? I picture you dressing all romantical in flowing colorful dresses made beautiful fabrics in real life. Try not to ruin my visual too badly. 40 | Second Style Magazine

EM: Oh, what, this old thing? *does a twirl and drops into a curtsy* Sorry, lovely. It’s just plain old wide-leg black pants and a T-Shirt, today. I’m lucky enough to have a three-and-a-half year old son and that means comfort is key. I can’t remember the last time I wore a pair of heels or didn’t end the day covered in something awful. I love being a hands-on Mum and there will be plenty of time for me to dress up when he’s older. In the meantime, my avatar has all the fashion fun! SH: When I first asked you to be our Style Icon, you said no that you were too busy. Luckily for us you changed your mind. Each and every single time I have ever IM’d you, I have received a busy response but I will add that you do always reply. Are you the busiest woman in SL? EM: My real life is certainly busy with a toddler in the house. I’m a single parent and as it has turned out, my son has special needs, so plenty of my time while logged in is actually spent AFK. When he’s home with me, I will try to catch a few minutes here and there to work through administrative stuff, but he is obviously my priority. When he’s -not- with me, I will knuckle down to work as hard as I can on designing and building while I have that time to focus. Second Life is a funny place to work. I’ve asked people to consider whether they would ever just show up at a RL friend’s place of work or business without warning, sit on the edge of their desk and demand their attention until it was given. But I understand that it’s tough sometimes to wrap your head around SL as a working environment when you’re so used to it being for fun and play. When it gets too much and I need to focus, I will put up the busy message and do my very best to return everyone’s IM’s as soon as I can stop and give them the attention they deserve. SH: Tell me about an average day in SL. What percentage of your day is fun vs. work? EM: Generally I log in with the mandatory cup of coffee to fortify me! I’ll go through the various note cards I’ve received overnight and try to answer as many as possible in the five minutes before my brain resets or I get distracted by something shiny on Plurk. From there, it’s working on whatever project is on the table, while keeping an eye on the clock so I don’t disregard my RL responsibilities. Meanwhile I’m usually fielding incoming instant messages and note cards and maybe catching up on a little television in the background to keep me from getting too lonely during the periods when it’s quiet. I usually start around 9am, and won’t finish up until about 10pm at night. I’m not at my desk the -whole- time, obviously, but it still makes for a long day. Sometimes I do wish I made the sort of things that could be churned out in a matter of hours, but as that’s not what I’ve chosen to create, I can’t complain too loudly. My favorite days are those when I’ve just finished an outfit. Then I get to go shopping for the things I’m going to use to style it in my vendor ads and blog pictures! That freedom to drift around the grid also gives me the opportunity to catch up with friends, have a chat and apologize for being a work-a-holic over the last few weeks. If we’re talking time spent working vs time spent socializing, I’d say the social side of SL right now is only about 2%. I keep saying I’ll change that, but it hasn’t happened yet. Fortunately, I love my job. :) SH: I believe we all have a life song…what is yours? EM: The Show, by Lenka. Describes it perfectly. I really don’t have things all worked out yet! SH: Tell me something about you that not many people know. Make it juicy…I won’t tell a soul. Continued on page 44 > Second Style Magazine | 43

EM: Hmmm... I lived in a Fraternity House in the United States for almost three months. How’s that for random? I’d never met the guys before I moved in, there was marijuana growing in the flowerbox outside the kitchen window, they wouldn’t let me come downstairs during their ‘meetings’ and they had to hide me in the attic one night when then police came to shut a party down because I was only nineteen. It was like having thirty-two big brothers without a single brain to share between them. I’m not sure I’d do it again, but it was certainly an experience! SH: Your photography is spectacular; you showcase your already gorgeous designs in such a beautiful whimsical way. Is there anything you are bad at? Lie to me if you need to. EM: Well thank you, SophiaHarlowface, that’s a lovely thing to say. I like to use my photography to show people the possibilities when it comes to something I’ve made. I want to encourage them to take their new outfit and find the story in it. As for talents, I think I’m tapped out now in Second Life. I can think of 1001 things which would be infinitely -more- useful and would have much broader real life application and I’m not good at any of those. Even the things I’m enjoying here online are skills I’m constantly trying to improve. I look around at the sheer volume of creative talent on the grid, and I’m both inspired and daunted in equal measure. I just do the best I possibly can and that has to be good enough. SH: Do you kiss on the first date? EM: Definitely not. I still remember the first night I met my Second Life Partner, Rich. We enjoyed a few hours of great conversation and as he went to say goodnight, he did something... oh gosh, what was it? He emoted something about gently tracing his finger down my cheek or something like that. Well. I wasn’t having it. I gave him a right telling off and put him straight in his place. It was really just a sweet gesture, but I suppose you get used to expecting the Creepy McCreepersons of Second Life. Thankfully, he wasn’t intimidated by my reaction and stuck around for the first virtual kiss a bit further down the track. We’ve been together for over two and a half years, so I think it was the right move! SH: How has Evie’s Closet changed your RL? I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved, even if no one else values it the way I do. When I first came to Second Life, my real life had great big gaping holes in it and I had very little self esteem. And I’m thrilled that over the last 3 years, I’ve been able to find my way again, much in part to the slow blossom of my little online business, and proving to myself that even an ordinary, single mother can learn new things and apply them to create something worthwhile. I hope, one day, to tell my little boy about this part of the journey and that he’ll be proud of me, too. As for Real Life and at the risk of sounding repetitive, my son is why I get up every morning and move forward. As I mentioned, we have some unique challenges to overcome, but he also has all the potential in the world and I’m so grateful that Evie’s Closet has given me the opportunity to be at home with him during these critical 44 | Second Style Magazine

first years and spend -more- time investing in the wonderful adult I know he’s going to become. SH: Meeting you on Plurk showed a side of you that I would have never guessed. You are a saucy minx full of mischief. Do you deny that? EM: Hahahahaha. Yeah. Well. There’s professional Evie and then there’s the rest of me and while it’s all genuine, I will admit that sometimes my tongue is a little bit looser on Plurk. It’s my inner faery, trying to get out! I like to have fun and I love to laugh and Plurk is my social outlet. Little bite-sized moments of interaction which don’t require a lengthy time commitment. What could be better? I think you have to have a little bit of spice to balance the sweet and it does tickle me that people are often surprised. I try - both on Plurk and in SL - to represent myself as I am in real life and I’m grateful that most people seem to like and accept it. SH: Evie, take it from me and anyone else who owns one of your beautiful creations....you are without a doubt an artist. Thank you so much for all your candor and letting us get a glimpse at one of the most respected and talented designers on the grid.

There’s something lacking in most blog posts today: emotions. Most bloggers stop when they figure the item they’re exhibiting looks good, leaving their avatar’s faces blank and vacant. There is an extreme need for emotional display in Second Life, beyond our typed words (because Lord knows we have more than enough typed emotional display to knock out an elephant herd) and beyond our fashionable photographs. A simple smile immediately humanizes things. A knitted brow, or a stuck out tongue. Emotions in Second Life are a bit hard to display sometimes. With lack of actual muscular movement of the face, we have to rely on emoters to get the job done. Most emoters have a specific set of facial expressions, to be combined in as many combinations as one would like. I personally use an Emoter made by Tizzers Foxchase, an old friend of mine whose HUD is easy to understand and can be combined in an infinite number of ways. Most emoter HUDs can be found at freebie areas around Second Life. With the introduction of Voice in Second Life, we can now choose to move our avatar’s mouths with our speech, which allows for more subtle expression changes but, on the whole, is not quite as good as the emoters. RC Cluster by Redd Columbia has put out a sculpted tongue attachment that allows for several cheeky poses, and several creators have put out teeth overlays for skins
(on the tattoo layer) that allow the wearer to express a slightly-open mouth. The following pictures feature and are by Adeline Blackthorne, Adorkable Peapod, Antonia Marat, Chandni Khondji, Clark Bowenfield, Darkley Aeon, December Dollinger, Elle Kirshner, Fayne Khandr, Felicity Blumenthal, Gabe Bookmite, Grazia Horowitz, Hallie Gallie, Hybrid Ansar, Kylei Benoir, Liliana Barrs, MacKenzie Irling, Randi Lenroy, Sileny Noel, Suti Capallini, Willow Zander, Winter Jefferson, and myself. Do you need a staple outfit to get you through those long, hot summer days while still looking fantastic? Search no further, because this ultra casual look is perfect for any summer activity. At the center of the look is a neutral t-shirt, highlighted with just enough graphics to keep it edgy, yet light enough to wear any day. The shirt is paired with sleeve tattoos, a wrist cuff and a dramatically dark cross pendant; giving it just a hint of danger. A pair of effortlessly rolled and distressed jeans embodies the easy feeling of summer. The light color and faded texture of the jeans mimics the vintage feeling of the graphic tee. As mentioned, the look features dark and masculine jewelry. The low-hanging, large cross pendant is a perfect contrast to the bulky wrist cuff. The dark theme is tied throughout the look by the addition of thick rimmed glasses, a dark beanie and black shoes. The stylish dark glasses capture the popular geek chic look of the season and are paired perfectly with the beanie. Finally, the black boat shoes are a perfect way to finish off the look.

Men Don’t Do Fashion < continued from page 72
Looking hot and staying cool through those long summer nights can be nearly impossible, but not when you rock this brilliant new look. A white v-neck t-shirt is the foundation of this outfit. The rolled sleeves and loose fitting fabric are staples for any summer look. A sharp, form fitting black vest is added on top of the basic t-shirt to capture an edgier vibe, making the look perfect for any summer party. Small, well placed accessories as well as full sleeve tattoos highlight the rocker aspect of the outfit. On the right hand, stacked bracelets and a waist pack contrast the solid wrist bands on the left. Small earrings and a newsboy cap are just enough to carry a rocker vibe throughout the outfit. Distressed and torn jeans paired with vintage black sneakers complete the look. Mimicking the casual feel of the v-neck t-shirt, the faded and worn jeans are a classic summer basic. The black, grey, and white tones in the canvas sneakers tie the white shirt and black vest together seamlessly. By combining basic fashion elements with rock star elements, this look is versatile and original; ideal for all the summer fun SL has to offer.
