How is it September already? This year has gone by so fast. September is always one of my favorite months because it ushers in Autumn: my favorite season. There’s nothing better, to me, than to go walking on a crisp day that smells like apples and see the trees turning bright and you realize that the next season is just around the corner. That feeling, the transitory nature of seasons, is what we tried to capture in this issue. It’s not your regular Fall Fashion issue, although there IS orange trees and some snuggly knits. You’ll also see Summer, Winter and other fashions that defy seasonal labels. This month sees outfits inspired by trees by Leah McCullough and clothes that match furniture by James Schwarz. Ana Lutetia takes a look at The Sea Hole while Amika Jewell gives us Niniko in-depth. We have a fantastic photo spread featuring tattoos by Darkley Aeon. We also have an amazing spread from Dolly Ewing about what it means to move on, while Dancien Graves examines the cyclic nature of the evolution of an avatar. Also this month, we’re welcoming Ryker Beck and Juana Manuel to the Second Style team! Juana is showing us Fashion Moods of the Season and Ryker is bringing a Mix n’ Match feature. Both are simply outstanding! We’re also featuring Kimberly Mirabeau as our Style Icon and talking to Gattina Dumpling about The Hotel Dare! We hope you like our September issue!

THE SEA HOLE Drinkinstein Sorbet, who is a musician in RL, has been designing in SL for a year now making the colourful and playful attire that you can find at THE SEA HOLE. She describes her store as kawaii, cute with lots of detail and I definitely agree. For creating the clothes for THE SEA HOLE, Drinkinstein combines photosourced material with hand drawing. She likes using everything at her disposal creating pieces she wants to wear. Therefore, her creations reflect a mix of untraditional genres and aesthetics paired. The shop itself is like a big box of melted crayons with bright colours creating a unique environment. GANG SQUIRREL SET* -straigt out da wood YO! It’s an adorable two pieces set with two squirrels in the top. The outfit itself includes the A line top, shorts, socks, hair bow and necklace. LALA This is a colourful outfit with a buttoned top with poof sleeves, tulip skirt, undies, asymmetrical socks and hair feathers. SLICK SET Poofy satin shorts and Sequin tube top, socks & Bow Slick is a more sophisticated set with satiny poof cuff shorts, sequin tube top, socks and a hairbow that matches the bow at the waist. SUMMER TULIP DRESS This a summery flowery dress with a balloon skirt and a pattern top. The dress comes with top, glitch undies and the sculpted skirt.

Wearing Your Home

By James Schwarz A Man’s castle is his home, and what’s that other saying that your body is your temple? Yeah I think that’s the one. Think about it, our bodies are indeed our homes (applies literally in SL since we carry everything we own all the time in our inventories, that’s one heavy invisible backpack) and like our homes, we furnish it according to our tastes to match our personality and draw out how we want to present ourselves. It’s only natural that certain aspects of our homes get reflected in the way we dress whether it’s intentional or not, so whenever you feel like you’re lacking inspiration on what to wear, why not look around your surroundings; take elements from the patterns of your couch and how it complements the nude carpet, or the eclectic mix that is your dresser or bookcase etc. and then open your closet and try to keep those images in mind, see what you can pick out and then go to that room where you’ve drawn inspiration from and you’ll feel that you’re at one with your surroundings, go on and give it a try in both SL and RL, go. I went to some of my favorite lifestyle stores in SL and tried doing that myself, observe (yes, like those people in IKEA who sit on every couch and lay on every bed, people were staring too):

Being located in Michigan in real life, I am well aware of the vague, terrifying unpredictability of seasons. One minute a calm summer breeze will be wafting through your home, and the next a tornado is tossing your Buick into the air. Perhaps you’re enjoying an idyllic winter snowfall on Christmas Eve... and digging yourself out of the recently-departed record blizzard on New Year’s Day. And don’t get me started on fall... to quote the genius comedian Lewis Black on autumn, “you have pretty leaves for three days... then a big wind comes around and you have sticks for the rest of the year.” Such is life inside of a mitten. Such seasonal scenarios do not have to be replicated inside Second Life, of course, but it may be ideal to switch up your surroundings to match the incoming seasons. Michigan autumns are always awash in apples and rural farm tours. That’s why 16 | Second Style Magazine

the Pre-Fabulous log cabin and barn resonate so much with me. I’ve written about Pre-Fabulous before, and their quality continues to astound here. Baked lighting, high-quality textures, and a welcoming, open sense of space contribute to both the cabin and the barn. All the barn needs is a cider press and I’m touring one of the local orchards, chugging apple juice like it’s my job. For winter, you can’t get much better than “Igloo!” by Perfect Prefabs. Weighing in at a lightweight 37 prims, the Igloo looks gorgeous inside and out. Whereas most people are content with simply sticking a hollow sphere into the ground and dimpling a hole into it, creator Siss Truss adds in a heavy dose of sculpted prim ice blocks, making the foundation pop outwards. The blocks also work well to define the entrance, with lots of defining blocks careening

outwards into the surrounding area, inviting you into the serene space inside. Stalagtite-like ice crystals jut on either side of the entrance for further accenting. Finally, a lighter dose of sculpted prims serve as snowcaps on top of the dome. Certainly, this is one of the best igloos in Second Life. Spring is usually a fine time to crawl out of your hiding place and start to enjoy nature again, even if she spent the last four months trying to bury you in snow. One lives to forgive and forget, especially once the trees begin to change color and offer up some shade for the slowly warming days. In light of this, the “Denmark Treehouse” by Tobias Novi is a playful reminder of the first nice days of the year in our childhoods. What kid wouldn’t want a multi-level wooden home, built securely upon thick trunks? What eight-year-old would turn out a series of interconnected wooden rope bridges and a working ground-to-top rope elevator? I might be older than eight, but even I enjoy the wonderful playfulness Tobias has worked into this massive tree. Tiny candles inset into the wooden poles along the bridges add even more to the ambiance of the tree complex. Even better, it fits perfectly within only a 4096 plot, making it possible for almost anyone. Finally, spring eventually gives way to summer, with days at the beach, family vacations, and over 300 recreational uses for water. Even if you have a perfectly wonderful treehouse at home, for vacation you still need a proper abode. That’s where the “Tiki Tattoo Maori Palm House” by Hatzfeld Runo comes in. A basic one-room octagonal structure is balanced between three palm trees. While basic, the design shines best within the cantilevered deck area, which juts out from the main structure and hangs from two of the gentlyswaying trees. Properly situated on your favorite beach, sunsets and sunrises are made much better with a little margaritas and some great tiki architecture. Regardless of the season, there’s invariably a thousand different styles of homes to choose from. Like any good outfit, it’s good to switch out your abode every couple of months to avoid going stale. It never hurts to fantasize in your tiki beach home when the snow is pouring outside, either. Second Style Magazine | 19

POSTCARDS

Brigitte Belgar Dear Brig, I’m going to be candid: times are tough for avatars right now. I regularly find myself staring into cyberspace wistfully recalling days spent clicking ‘buy’ endlessly, squealing with joy as each new item found its way into my inventory and my heart. Thrift, it seems, is the new buzzword. I’m determined to reduce, reuse, and recycle-- to dump some of the excess that has begun to define my in-world lifestyle and become the model of a recessive-savvy gal. An especially frugal friend has just invited to a ‘swap party’ and I’m to arrive with bags (inventory folders) full of items I no longer want for trading with equally budget-attentive in-world citizens. As I prep for my thrifty get-together, I find myself needing your advice. What should and shouldn’t I change about my wardrobe to prep for the upcoming fall season? What should I keep? What should I trade? What should I barter for as if my life depended on it? The season is changing, but my budget isn’t; this will likely be my only chance to ‘shop’ until the economy turns around. I want to make sure I get my hands on anything worth acquiring at the party without being too obvious about wanting the best items. Looking forward to your sage wisdom, Passionate Penny-Pincher

58 | Second Style Magazine

Dear Passionate Penny Pincher, I applaud your efforts at frugality and advanced planning-- you’re a woman after my own heart. Everyone in my life knows there’s nothing I enjoy more than purging through my own inventory (in both worlds) to the tune of “out with the old and in with the new.” Before you go stuffing your ten gallon trash bags with your entire collection of possessions or grabbing at random items at the party, though, there’s certainly a few rules to play by that will make your pocketbook and wardrobe happier this upcoming fall season. (1) Keep-- and trade for-- scarves. I’m not talking about the knitted plush ones meant to keep you warm as the air turns crisp; I’m taking about the brightly colored, boldly patterned ones perfect for tying around your neck or your handbag to add a little flavor to your ensemble and make a unforgettable statement. Pluck as many as possible out of the heap of items your fellow fashionistas bring to trade, because you can never have too many. (2) Barter for Bold Jewelry. Keep your eyes peeled for necklaces and earrings that sparkle and dazzle. Don’t go overboard, of course; I’m

talking about jewelry that appears delicate but, in fact, has a punch to it. That said, don’t be too quick to toss out something you think is too showy or sparkly; it might be the exact change your drab outfit needs this season. (3) Hold tight to distressed pieces. Our mothers taught us that when something rips, you throw it away. Not the case this fall. Celebrate the fact that you don’t have to replace your torn leggings or partially shredded tops-- let ‘em rip! What was once reserved for rock stars and the saucy punks in your high school is now accessible and perfect for you. While I might not suggest trading for someone else’s ripped items (for goodness sake, maintain some standards), I certainly condone taking scissors to your own pieces when you need to shake things up with a little change. (4) Suit up your military jackets. Donned by individuals prepping for battle the world over, this oldie but goodie is still (and perhaps more than ever) suited for you as you take on the wildness of the virtual (and real) world. You probably have an old one lying around from your Michael Jackson phase in the 80’s, or maybe your Continued on page 62 >

guy has one that can be re-appropriated for you. If not, watch for your friends foolish enough to toss out what they thought was a relic of yesteryears and embrace the opportunity to slide one on over your own ensemble as you leave the party-- just don’t look too smug while you march down the street. (5) Don’t cringe at neons. I know it’s hard to believe, but the electric 80’s palette is back-- in bold shots of color, rather than head-to-toe glow. The key to pulling off these colors for the season is to wear them like an adult: don’t overdo it. Watch for pieces that offer little sparks of electric color rather than enough brightness to make you dizzy. Act sympathetic toward friends who seem eager to be rid of their neons; if you’re too excited to acquire them, you’ll make them have second thoughts about the possibilities of those stimulating colors offering a surprisingly invigorating change to their closets. I could go on here, but I’d fill more postcards than anyone would ever care to read. My final piece of advice for you as you venture out to what promises 62 | Second Style Magazine

to be a fantastically frugal function is to keep your cards close; keep your excitement in check with you watch your friends lay out deliciously divine jewelry, vivaciously vintage jackets, and spunky scarves. Acting cool and collected will help you acquire everything you ever dreamed of-- at a swap party, anyway.

Second Style: How did you get started in Second Life and what led you to fashion? Kimberly Mirabeau: When I started playing SL.. I had been a long time member of TSO (The Sims Online). I had heard just awful things about SL and what in contained... and was intrigued, LOL. One day I was reading a BBS that I used to regular.. and saw that SL was offering free membership.. so I jumped right in. SS: Heh, so you got in just to see how bad it was? Kimberly Mirabeau: Pretty much... SS: What made you stay? Kimberly Mirabeau: I had heard it was nothing but sex and debauchery.. haha! Honestly.. at first it was the graphics quality. It was a huge improvement over TSO at the time. I stayed after that because SL really got my attention. I was fascinated by everything I could do here SS: What was the second reason? Kimberly Mirabeau: The people I had started meeting. That.. and well..I loved being a Barbie doll. Kimberly Mirabeau: I loved them when I was a little girl... and the fact that I could play dress up here.. and be so much more than what I was in RL.. grabbed me and didn’t let go SS: That’s totally the best part! So you were into fashion right away? Kimberly Mirabeau: Ooooh yeah. I had some ladies that I met that I affectionately referred to as my Fairy Godmothers. SS: What did they do? Kimberly Mirabeau: They did the whole pay it forward thing with Continued on page 68 >

me. Bought me my first good outfit... Prim hair.. that was new then when I rezzed...Gave me a skin.. they made me pretty! SS: Oh wow, you were lucky! Kimberly Mirabeau: I was very blessed :) These ladies stayed my friends for over a year . SS: You’re really well-known for your amazing photography. How and why did you start? Kimberly Mirabeau: How I started... I really can’t say... One day I was taking snaps.. Friends liked them... and asked me to take some for them. They were raw, straight off the grid pictures, but people loved what I could do with that. I bought one of the N30 studios when they were just 1k and started a small photography studio with the help of my friend Doug. Really, he encouraged me to get Photoshop or something like it to work up images and make them better. He helped me with tutorials and taught me a few things on his own. He always said I had a good eye and I guess it was just my niche. I loved it! I loved that people felt pretty when I took their picture and I wasn’t really making that much money then from it either.. I genuinely enjoyed it. SS: And the photography led to blogging? Kimberly Mirabeau: Oh wow.. yea.. a long, long time after. I had some friends suggest I try blogging because they liked how I wrote. They said I had a way with words and knew what looked good. So I gave it a try. I enjoy blogging a lot... even though I don’t get to blog as often as I like due to RL.. SS: How’d you meet Toko and Nyla to start Vain, Inc? Kimberly Mirabeau: Actually, Vain Inc was started by Nyla Rossini and Toko Voom. I became friends with Nyla and Toko through Flickr, mutual admiration of each others’ work, and a well timed photoshoot. I was fortunate enough to be invited to a photography shoot for a Tribute pic to the late Ginny Talamasca. Toko and Nyla were both there... hah Toko even took a pic of me that day.. well, a part of me... SS: Ooo, what part? Kimberly Mirabeau: She took a picture of the back of my legs, wearing a pair of Moody’s. That picture ended up being used as ad’s in Stiletto Moody’s store! I was floored to see my legs everywhere! 68 | Second Style Magazine

SS: oh wow! i didn’t know that was you! Kimberly Mirabeau: Yep, I’m sure there aren’t many people who knew it was me hahaha Anyway... I became good friends with Nyla and Toko after that shoot and after many, many conversations and coaxing on their part they offered me a spot at Vain Inc. Just doing little editorials.. here and there. And that grew into the Arts Editor placement and I started helping curate their gallery. That was over a year ago. SS: What’s your role at Vain, Inc now? Kimberly Mirabeau: I’m the Arts Editor, Editor-atLarge and Model. I work side by side with Toko. SS: That’s got to be a lot of work! Kimberly Mirabeau: It can be but its a labor of love... truly. Some months are busier than others. Every month I choose a artist for the month, pick out images from the Flickr pool we have to feature and I either do the editors letter image or write the editors letter. And some months I do more! LOL SS: You’re so tapped in to the SL arts scene. Who’re your favorite artists right now? Kimberly Mirabeau: Oh wow. That’s really tough.. I’ve somewhat pulled away from it really... It became far too competitive for me... but.. if I had to choose...I have loved the portraits that Cicciuzzo Gausman has been doing lately. They are so ethereal and lovely. As well as Fingers Scintilla. He’s a visionary... truly. He produces work that trips the mind. SS: How so? Kimberly Mirabeau: He just does things that no other people on the grid do. SS: I’ll have to check him out! Kimberly Mirabeau: He does incorporate RL Imagery too.. but I’d have to say that he’s the most original artist I’ve seen in a very long time. Originality is thinning when it comes to SL based art.. I’m afraid. SS: I always can’t wait to see what you’re wearing. How do you choose your outfits and what goes into making a great outfit in SL? Kimberly Mirabeau: hahah It depends on my mood, really... I’m deep down a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, even in a place where comfort isn’t a factor. I always like to look comfortable in my virtual clothes. Really, what I do is... I keep an open mind and see how well different pieces work together. I rarely buy all of a collection from any one designer. I’ll find an outfit here.. one there.. and mix them up with things Continued on page 70 >

that I’ve had for years to see what looks good together. I think the only thing I really try to stay updated on is hair! SS: Who are your favorite designers right now? Kimberly Mirabeau: hmmm...I love Boom... Aranel’s feistiness comes out in her designs and I love it!! I’ve always admired Rebel Hope’s designs too. From my start on the grid, I can always find something there that is perfect for me. SS: Is there any designer you think doesn’t get enough press and you’d like more people to know about? Kimberly Mirabeau: Ohh yea... I think that LoveLace needs more coverage on the corseting they make. I’ve always liked some of the tops that Nova has.. and I don’t hear of many people talking about them. Ohh, and Riddle has some really great clothing as well. SS: You’ve got so many projects going on. What’s next in your SL? Kimberly Mirabeau: Singing.... :) SS: Singing? Kimberly Mirabeau: mmhmm...Ya know, like DJ’ing.. but, instead of talking before the music... You sing with it ;) SS: Awesome! When do you start? Kimberly Mirabeau: Hopefully sometime in September. I just got my equipment in today, actually, and I’ve got a good friend helping me set things up. But at the end of August I’ll be unable to speak much less sing.. So... September, hopefully :) SS: Right, you’re having your tonsils out. Ouch! Kimberly Mirabeau: Yep, next week. SS: When you start singing, will you do parties or just concert-type things? Kimberly Mirabeau: Hmmm I’m not really sure just yet. Probably just close intimate gatherings with friends to start. I want to feel my way out and see if I can swing this for real.. SS: How long have you been singing? Kimberly Mirabeau: All my life.. really.. But 70 | Second Style Magazine

SS: How did you find SL? Gattina Dumpling: OH, that I am not sure of. People had been mentioning it to me on and off and I finally signed up one day. I was lucky because this guy rescued me right away so I was never a noob. I also luckily found the NPIRL website run by Bettina Tizzy within my first week, so I quickly found all the cool stuff. SS: And how did you get into SL art? Gattina Dumpling: I collect art RL and I decided right away I wanted to explore showing art in sl. Four Yip was one of the first people I met and she has been at The Hotel dare since it started. So I wanted my own place in SL I could showcase art and I thought it would be fun to do in a hotel setting. SS: Wow, what kind of art do you like in RL? Gattina Dumpling: I am mostly a fan of “low-brow” art, the type you see in magazines like Juxtapose and Hi-Fructose, Ray Caesar, Mark Ryden, Camille Rose Garcia, Slyvia Ji.. all those people. Now I am starting to show their work in SL, so it is amazing for because I’m just a blatant fan girl. SS: Do you have any fun fan-girl stories? :) Gattina Dumpling: No, not really. BUT, I will say, and this shows what a geek I am, when Ray gave me permission to show his work, and when I first saw the avatar Marie Lauridsen (Of Milk Motion) created in the build at the hotel, I cried. It was just so beautiful and special and magical to me. Because I have been a fan of his so long and to be able to have it in SL was brilliant. Marie created the avs, Katat0nik Pidgeon did the costumes, and Daniel Luchador did the builds. The hair is from Tiny Bird and Leetah Moxie. You go into the hotel and in the main gallery space his work is hung, and you can enter four of his paintings so you are IN the art, and when you wear the full avs you ARE the art. SS: Oh wow, that’s amazing! Gattina Dumpling: http://npirl.blogspot. com/2009/07/reveling-in-real-world-art-one-very. html That shows it all and how it works.... it is very cool and people have really loved it. SS: What was the thought process behind the first iteration of the Hotel Dare and how did you decide to implement the idea in SL? Gattina Dumpling: The first hotel focused solely on SL artists, and we still have a hotel at Nur Moo’s

Poetik sim where it is devoted to mainly sl art, the hotel located at the marine sim is more RL artists, and showing their work in sl. The thought process was just me wanting to be able to show people what I LOVE, and introducing them to new artists or what they may not be familiar with. We have a lot of shops too because sl fashion, to me, is also art and can be really creative. I do this all for free, none of my shops pay rent, sl is just my little hobby. SS: How would you characterize the evolution of Hotel Dare from where it began to where you are now? Gattina Dumpling: Ha! When it started it was really just me and Four and whoever else we could beg to come in, and now I think people know more about it and appreciate what I’m doing so we have a LOT more people, and now that I am doing rl artists as well I have an easier time convincing them that sl is not just some blingtard wasteland. That is always the most amusing part, explaining SL to someone who knows NOTHING about it. SS: Did you get a lot of mixed reactions? Gattina Dumpling: No, I think people are curious but it IS hard to explain, I find myself saying stuff like “Well, imagine World of Warcraft, but with less dragons...” SL can be amazing, you know this, I know this, but to people who have never signed on they are always “Wait... this is.... a video game... or??” So that is always the most difficult part, getting people unfamiliar with the grid to become involved. SS: I would think that artists would love the creative potential, even though SL is so hard to get a handle on initially. Gattina Dumpling: Yes, and it is nice because Mescaline Tamas has started creating machinima and when I get sorted I will have the Hotel Dare website up so they can see everything we do and it can visually “explain” it better than I can. SS: Oh, that’s great! When is the site expected up? Gattina Dumpling: As soon as I con someone to help me design it for free <3 SS: Haha! Gattina Dumpling: Haha! True though, because we make no money off of this we sort of rely on help from people into the concept. Continued on page 74 >

Interview | Gattina Dumpling > Continued from page 73

SS: What are some of your favorite pieces in the Hotel? Gattina Dumpling: Well, that is a bit hard to explain because at the Poetik build, we currently have Trevor Brown, an amazing rl artist ( http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=CNN8uSArE-o here is the machinima Mesc made for the build) and at the Marien build we have Ray Caesar, and BOTH builds are so immersive and cool I cannot pick favourite parts because I love it all. At Poetik we also have JoJorunoo Runo, who is a brilliant SL artist and her builds always amaze me. She is sooooooooo good. SS: Where do you see The Hotel Dare going in the future? Gattina Dumpling: Ideally, if the economy ever turns around, I plan on opening a gallery within the next few years. We are also in talks with a design museum in London who want to do a RL/SL show with us. This year I am also hoping to do something

in conjunction with some of the cornerstone schools in my city to raise money for children’s art funding, but that is a dream and a complicated one. It would be nice to be able to showcase the work of kids and in turn raise money for supplies for them... I think arts in schools are so important and they can really be transformative. But until then, the builds at each hotel change every three months and we just hope to keep showcasing art in sl. SS: It was so great to talk to you, thanks! Gattina Dumpling: Yes, I agree and it was really fun.

Fashion Inspired

By Trees

By Leah McCullough It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit. ~Robert Louis Stevenson Everyday, we walked down the street and see them. Strong, musical, magnificent. Have you stopped and admired them for a moment? Throughout the seasons they change, blossom, evolve. The following outfits are inspired in four of my favorite trees in different seasons...

Beech - Winter About the tree Beach trees can be found in Europe, Asia and North America. It is most commonly grown as an ornamental tree, but beech wood is excellent firewood, easily split and burning for many hours with bright but calm flames. Chips of beech wood are used in the brewing of Budweiser beer as a fining agent. Beech logs are burned to dry the malts used in some German smoked beers, to give the beers their typical flavor. Beech is also used to smoke some cheeses. About the outfit Zaara’s dress was a perfect match for the winter Beech tree. Elegant, slender, ethereal. To match the timeless look of the picture, I choose Rockberry Character skin, with its almost colorless complexion and delicate features. You can find more information about these amazing trees at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Beech Tree picture credit: http://z.about.com/d/ landscaping/1/0/p/G/winter_beech.jpg Skin: Rockberry Character skin Willow Hair: Exile Breeze Chocolate Gown: Zaara Vayu gown for Swansong Shoes: Armidi Gisaci Sasche Flats Coffee Cake Pose: Leafy

Sambucus - Summer About the tree Sambucus are native in temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Its flowers are used to produce several syrups, drinks and toppings. It is also used for medicinal used. On the folklore side, they were supposed to ward off evil influence and give protection from witches, a popular belief held in some cultures. If an elder tree was cut down, a spirit known as the Elder Mother would be released and take her revenge. About the outfit The DCNY “Kathryn” green dress was the first thing that came to my mind when thinking about this picture. I put on the Barerose white bolero, the cute Pixel Mode shoes and some great accessories and the outfit was ready! Oak - Fall About the tree the oak is native to the northern hemisphere, and includes deciduous and evergreen species extending from cold latitudes to tropical Asia and the Americas. Wide, quarter-sawn boards of oak have been prized since the Middle Ages for use in interior paneling of prestigious buildings such as the debating chamber of the British House of Commons in London, England, and in the construction of fine furniture. Oakwood was used in Europe for the construction of ships until the 19th century .Barrels in which red wines, sherry, brandy and spirits such as Scotch whisky and Bourbon whiskey are aged are made from European and American oak. About the outfit I chose Aoharu’s coat for its rich colors that were similar to Oaks leaves in Fall. Then I added some brown Naive jeans and a red Naive dress on top. The long wavy hair from Truth and the beautiful jewelry from EarthTones completed the outfit. Jacarandá - Spring About the tree This is my favorite tree ever. It’s very common to walk around my city and see these gorgeous trees with their beautiful purple flowers. The Jacaranda is native to tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Several species are widely grown as ornamental plants throughout the subtropical regions of the world, valued for their intense flower displays. The most often seen is the Blue Jacaranda and it only flowers for approximately six weeks from September through October. Brazilian Jacaranda is used as the wood for the body of acoustic guitars. About the outfit I was in love with this gown since I first saw it.... Bliss Couture has beautiful gown, but the Lovena Spring Gown in purple was the exact same shade as the stunning Jacarandá flowers! The turn of the seasons are like the mile markers of the year. And I may add, also the mile markers of our closets. In Real Life we are very much bound by the whims of Mother Earth. Apart from the practical aspects, (who wants to wear a fur coat in summer?) various customs and rules have evolved for fashion based on the season. An example of this would be the “no white shoes after labor day” rule. Seasons also stand in as metaphors for various things, each with a myriad of other symbolic meanings attached. As a consequence it can be said each season has its own “mood” in the language of clothing. In Second Life however, there are no such constraints on fashion. In-world simulations of “Weather” and the “Seasons” can be controlled with the click of a mouse. Although there are people who might dress their avatar to match the RL season, there are plenty of others who do not. And so I like to think the concept of seasons translated into Second Life really boils down to how we are feeling in a given moment, and the symbolism we want to express, and the feelings we wish to evoke. With this in mind, we can re-envision the seasons then as distinct moods, and rename each with a descriptive adjective.

“Invigoration” Spring conjures up images of new growth, pleasantly warm weather, the blooming of flowers, and the lush green of new vegetation. It also means new beginnings, as various cultures celebrate the beginning of their new calendar year in springtime. And as nature awakes from its long wintertime slumber, it is pre-eminently a season for amour, and fecundity in general. It is also a celebration of the return of the sun, and the light, from the darkness and long nights of winter. With this in mind I selected this wonderfully colorful dress and blooming tree hairstyle. It seems to me that it might be characterized as “whimsical” and to that description I would also add playful, bright, and happy. It is impossible not to smile while wearing such a brightly colored dress, because it just seems to exude a sort of cheerful vibe. I chose to name this particular mood “innervation” to try to capture this blend of hopeful excitement, enthusiasm, of the feeling of coming back to life again, into a beautiful world of color and light and sound.

“Indolence” From this happy bustling we move to the long hot days of summer. Perhaps we all remember summers off from school that seemed to last forever, and the wonderfully laid back lazy way of living. If you live in certain parts of the planet, summer can be a rigorously sticky longish time, spent ducking from one air conditioned place to another. In second life there is no sweating or heatstroke, but there is a certain sense of inertia sometimes, of rest and relaxation, maybe even the feeling of aimless hedonistic wandering, because you are essentially on vacation pretty much all the time in-world. In summer, the fabrics are light weight and scantier, and the colors lighter, with perhaps plenty of white abounding, which tends to reinforce this feeling of light, airiness and casualness. Or perhaps the feeling of heat may be implied by the lack of costume as well. With this in mind, I chose the name “indolence” to express this wandering, lazy, vacation mode. This dress/ensemble is perhaps not the most traditional “summer” dress, but the ruffled skirt, bright color, and spaghetti straps give a casual bright summery feeling. It is quite reminiscent of what a person might wear during their summer vacation, possibly exploring out and about, confronted with the heat and the oddness of the surroundings, and most probably sweating in their starchy stiff new clothes they bought for the trip. “Splendor” Generally the first words that come to mind when describing the colors of autumn are rich browns, golds, and oranges. These are the color of the leaves turning, which is a very distinctive feature of this season. Autumn also generally means the return of crisp cool weather, and therefore the donning of heavier, perhaps more elaborate fabrics. This is also a season of harvest festivals, and so there is also a connotation of bounty, of feasting, and of celebration. In fact autumn can even be said to have a kind of scent, of pumpkin pie and maybe even roasting turkey. The days grow shorter and the nights longer. It is almost like we are celebrating the best things in life, and even as the darkness falls around us, we glitter, dance, and eat to excess very defiantly in our best clothes. The hour before sunset is sometimes called the “magic” or “golden” hour, and perhaps this season can be described as Continued on page 90 > Second Style Magazine | 89

tions, perhaps at a ball.

With this in mind, the best word that came to mind to describe this stately, richly appointed season would be “Splendor.”

“Melancholy”

I chose this magnificent gown to represent the season, mostly because of its golden color, but also for its utter opulence. It is decorated quite flamboyantly with bright feathers, which reminded me very much of the falling leaves of autumn, in their glorious hues. This is not a gown to be trifled with. It is made to be worn at the most exalted social func90 | Second Style Magazine

Winter is the season of deepest cold, snow, of the darkest days of the year, of the continuation of major holidays and gala events. And as such Winter also signals its arrival by the use of even heavier fabrics, darker colors, (winter white being an exception) and furs. During this time the world seems to be dead and lifeless--all the trees become bare, their skeletal branches stark against grey skies. Despite this it is supposed to be the “most wonderful time of

the year” in romanticized terms, though the reality is that this season often brings on a type of depression, from lack of light, or loneliness. Although the most formal events and dress occur in this season, it is not the warm golden splendor of Jupiter, but more like a cold, avaricious, silver Saturnine richness that informs this mood with stately yet somber elegance. A personal fact--I was born on New Year’s Eve and I think this day sums up the mood of this season the best--it is a time of reflection, and perhaps a frenzied drunkenness that celebrates the death of the old year , the passage of time, and per-

haps a sense of our mortality. It is a complex mood and season, and for these reasons I have chosen the term “Melancholy” to express this mixture of solemnity mirth, somber hues yet richly decorated and elegant clothing, and of the semi-funereal aspect of this last season, and last day of the year. This gown, although in austere black, is incredibly ornate, yet it expresses instead of unbridled gaiety a stately dignity. It is actually somewhat reminiscent Continued on page 92 > Second Style Magazine | 91

perhaps of a court gown, and the feathers that decorate the headdress are certainly quite flamboyant. The little jewels scattered among the ink dark plumage remind me very strongly of the stars glittering coldly in velvet black darkness of the long night. And so here we have our fashion moods of the seasons, at least as interpreted by one person. When mode and mood combine in Second Life, there is no limit to our fashion ingenuity.

NINIKO SPREADING Many of you probably know the brands ‘NINIKO’ and ‘NINIKO BOY’. They were created just this year in Second Life by Kae Sahara, the owner of ‘NINIKO’ and ‘NINIKO BOY’. I had a talk with her and asked some questions. They used to be at the Creators Pavillion sim, but now they’ve moved to the SWITCH sim which has just opened September 5th,next to Creators Pavillion. This time ‘NINIKO’ and ‘NINIKO BOY’ use 1/4 of the SWITCH sim, and are trying to express the concept of a ‘familiar town.’ It’s not very fantasy-like, but it looks just as they as if they are a RL town somewhere. There are also ARAI and another creator’s pavillion mall at the SWITCH sim which makes the visit worthwhile. Kae Sahara, the owner of ‘NINIKO’ and ‘NINIKO BOY’ became interested in making 3D clothes in Second life and decided to try. She wants to create more clothes that are familiar. Her clothes are not only casual pieces, but contain an essense of cuteness that I know we can feel from her clothes. She is happy to see people wear her clothes mixed-and-matched with other shops’ items, and it sometimes gives her a new idea for her clothes. It is a great point that almost all of her clothes include all the layers, so you can wear it as a jacket, inner shirt, or whatever you like. And that is what she wants us to do :) I think this is a wonderful communication of energy between a creator and the customers. There are some pair clothes in ‘NINIKO’ and ‘NINIKO BOY’ that come in boys and girls versions, so you can wear the item no matter which gender avatar you using. Just visit the store and feel the cuteness and calmness of ordinary days. If you want to know more about SWITCH or NINIKO, you can get newest information from its website; http://cp-switch.com/ / http:// niniko.cp-switch.com/ 94 | Second Style Magazine
