We’ve packed the pages of this issue with all things holiday related, including a very festive photo spread care of James Schwarz, complete with mistle toe & menorah! If you are searching for a holiday/winter themed sim, Dancien Graves has selected a few in Winter Wonderlands. Perhaps you are trying to scrounge up the perfect gift for that special someone, Gabby Panacek has been kind enough to take all the hassle out of your holiday shopping with To Top It Off. We are reintroducing an old article you might recall; Mini guide, and this month it features some seasonal footwear in the way of boots, and Ana Lutetia’s Fresh faces features the designs of elymode. December’s Style Icon is the Miel duo of Miel Nirvana and Mika Nieuport, who have taken some time out from creating to chat with our Brigitte Belgar. We were also lucky enough to have guest contributor Zoe Demar, who’s finished off 2009 with a gorgeous New Year’s Eve photo spread. And finally we would like to welcome to our staff the lovely and talented Vega Arida, who is also bringing back on of Second Style’s older features; The Look, where you can find Vega trimming the tree in perfect style. Keep warm, and see you in 2010!

fresh faces | elymode By Ana Lutetia

Elysium Eilde is a talented SL™ photographer that decided to start a clothing line. She has started to create this past Spring and opened her first shop in August, 2009. Having a great group of friends who gave her tremendous support helped a lot in the growth of elymode. All of the attire is hand-drawn from scratch without using any pre-made textures, and at elymode you can find flirty and colourful clothing. One of the details I personally love from elymode is that the colour palette used by Elysium is almost always the same, which is great to mix and match all the items in the store. Some other features of elymode are that all layers are offered on every item, and the items are always sold as separates, which is a great idea! Elysium Eilde designs clothes she would like to wear in SL: sexy, without giving everything away and a bit of whimsy too. “As hard as I have worked, and as much time as I have put into this... I still could not have done it without the support of my friends.” - Elysium Eilde

*elymode* heart cami and shorties This was the very first set created by Elysium. It is available in several colours at an extremely inexpensive price. It’s sold as separates and it also has a jacket to match the set. *elymode* lounging The lounging collection has such a comfy look! There is no such thing as too much basics inSL. Actually, I don’t believe there are enough. Lounging sets are always a must have, as we do want to look our best when invited to a pajama party. *elymode* leafy tank + skirt The Leafy set is a line of tank tops, skirts and cardigans – which I am not showing. The highlight of this line is the contrasting leaf detail in the tops. The prims in the skirt perfectly blend the glitch pants. *elymode* Soft Denim Skirt + Wrapped Denim Shirt Denim was the latest release by elymode. Once again, Elysium outdid herself with all the little details in the texture. Both pieces look great worn separate and amazing together.

POSTCARDS by Brigitte Belgar

Dear Brig, Because my in-world friends are well-attuned to my adoration for virtual fashion, they thoughtfully shower me with gifts of prim couture every holiday season. I should note, though, that I use the word ‘couture’ very loosely. The inventory offerings that pop up on my screen are, to be honest, anything but fashionable. I could go into the disgusting details of the misaligned prim skirts, horrendous textures, and poorly conceived frocks that seem more like lumps of coal than holiday offerings, but I’ll spare you the spine-tingling details. In the past, I’ve graciously thanked each bestower, worn their present once, and then tossed it into my inventory’s trash can, slamming the lid down on the general disgracefulness rather forcefully. This season, though, I don’t anticipate having a lot of time in-world; I plan to spend the holidays with RL family and friends (imagine that) and don’t want to come back after the New Year to a pile of rubbish and log of capped IM’s from friends inquiring as to when they might get to see me to sport their gifts. How on earth can I avoid this without resorting to wiping my entire friends list or spreading false claims about being opposed to gift-giving? Dear Rubbish Recipient, Your plight is shared by avatars and humans the world over, I fear. Luckily, for that reason, I have several suggestions for handling your situation. Option One: Re-gifting The most eco-conscious and, at least in appearance, ‘thoughtful’ of your options, re-gifting does come with a few rules. You obviously don’t want to give a present back to someone Continued on page 20 > 18 | Second Style Magazine

Postcards

< continued from page 18 who presented it to you-- that’s just insulting, embarrassing, and downright trashy. If your circle of friends is particularly close, you’ll want to make sure that news of your re-gifting doesn’t get back to the original bestower of the present. So, if Alice and GossipGirl601 are BFF’s-- don’t give one’s gift to the other. In fact, it’s usually suggested that one wait at least 6-12 months to regift something-- a tip that might be hard for you to adhere to since fashion is involved and styles change. Finally, make sure you take the tags and original card off of a present before you re-gift it. In your case, this means deleting the thoughtful notecard that your friend included in the ‘medieval_wench_lingerie/hotgreen’ she thoughtfully chose for you. Option Two: No-Gift Rule Our challenging economic times have yielded a number of emerging trends-- one of which is to forgo

gift-giving altogether during holiday seasons. I don’t think it would be tacky to suggest that your cohort do the same. If they feel that strongly about the need to ‘give’, why not suggest everyone donate their Lindens toward a big holiday celebration for you to enjoy as a group? If your friends share a passion for fashion, could you plan a group shopping spree so that you can monitor what they buy for you and/or gently nudge them toward more socially acceptable retail outlets? I’m guessing that, like the rest of us, your friends’ wallets aren’t bursting with Lindens at the moment; they might be more on-board with ditching gift-giving than you’d imagine. Option Three: Alternative Gifts If your friends can’t be persuaded to consider the joys surrounding a gift-less holiday season, you might suggest they funnel their funds toward charitable causes. Instead of stuffing your inventory with ‘treats,’ urge them to send the funds to charities or causes you support. You could even invite them to donate to your favorite sims or in-world fashion icons. Tell them to think of it as the gift that keeps on giving. I guarantee that this proposition will make you appear hip, trendy, and even socially conscientious. Whatever you decide to do, decide and announce it quickly before your friends can use the, “I’ve already gotten your gift” excuse. Good luck!

Dear Brig, Although I love ringing in the New Year, I absolutely hate the cursed half hour before the ball drops. Traditionally, I spend that time desperately trolling around whatever festivity I’m attending in search of someone to lock lips with when the clock strikes twelve. That anticipation, in turn, causes me anxiety all evening. In fact, I spend hours-- even days-- prior to New Years Eve plotting and toiling over how to adorn myself to best attract a kissing partner. This year the worrying has begun earlier than ever. Acting upon the recommendations of several friends and my personal counselor, I’m putting my foot down before things get uncontrollably stressful. Please, I beg you-- tell me what to wear for New Years so that I can spend my time sipping bubbly and munching on hors d’oeuvres instead of psychotically searching for someone to kiss during the first moments of 2010. Dear Frenzied Friend, Sadly, I’ve seen your type at New Years soirees. As you note, the only thing worse than jockeying for a kissing partner in the last moments of one year is standing alone in a crowd of lip-lockers during the beginning of a new one. Continued on page 22 > 20 | Second Style Magazine

Postcards

< continued from page 20 If I’m being honest, finding a kissing partner isn’t so much about what you wear-- it’s about how you act. That said, since your request was for fashion (not behavioral) etiquette, I’ve put together three outfits that guarantee you’ll have heads turning your way. Making sure there’s a set of puckered lips on them is something I’ll leave up to you! The first ‘do combines three things popping up all over the grid and runway this season-- a fitted jacket, clunky belt, and knee-high boots. The suggestiveness of the detailed top signals that this combination isn’t an everyday outfit, despite the messy updo topping it all off. Brig tossed on some face embellishment and a ring for added festivity. Who doesn’t like to sparkle and shine while welcoming in a new year? The second outfit is a bit more formal than the first, just in case you have plans to pop into a more lavish venue. The updo is still a bit sloppy, but red lipstick and largerimmed glasses lend some elements of haute couture to the mix. Brig’s long gloves, another bold ring, and

black-toed leather heels echo that refinery and jazz up what’s otherwise a pretty basic ruffled top, black skirt, and black leggings. The third outfit is, by far, the most playful of the set. Purple-toned makeup mirrors the audacious color of the leaf-shaped top that made a fun companion piece to Brig’s tutu-like skirt. Leggings of a variety of colors would probably look adorable, but these garter socks add a bit of salaciousness that, let’s face it, we all enjoy on New Year’s Eve. A variety of heels and jewelry options are possible here, but Brig erred on the conservative side of adornment so that her top and face were the center of attention. After all, the idea is to get someone to kiss your lips-- not your feet, right? I’ll be crossing my fingers for your success during my New Year’s kissing (okay, I totally won’t, but it felt like a nice thing to say). Here’s to whatever lavish ensemble you throw together, lots of kisses, and making New Year’s resolutions we don’t break. Cheers!

Miel and Mika By Brigitte Belgar

My relationship with Miel Nirvana and Mika Nieuport was, if I’m being honest, love at first sight. My heart raced, my mind turned to mush, and logic went out the window as passion took over my every sense. I’m talking, of course, about the day I floated into their store (Miel) and filled my arms with their bewitching creations. Everyone I’ve spoken to about Miel loves the store for a variety of diverse, subjective reasons. Some are hopelessly enchanted by the rich textures that have come to characterize every skirt, pair of socks, and shoes hanging on the shop’s playful displays; others gravitate toward the reliable, warm color palate the duo uses; a few friends confessed to having inexplicable adoration for specific pieces Miel and Mika have created—a unique hairdo, a ruffled headband, or a pair of patterned, rolled-up socks. Whatever the reason may be, we can’t seem to stop popping into their store, justifying the purchase of one more of their treats for our wardrobes. How could we do otherwise? Miel and Mika continuously produce fresh, truly avantgarde work that has bestowed them with wellearned positions in the ranks of Second Life’s fashion elite. I recently had the pleasure of stealing some of the duet’s precious in-world time to chat about where they draw inspiration from, what keeps them motivated, and what their favorite flavors of ice cream are. SS: One need only pop into your store to read the charming story of your humble origins on the front wall. Can you each give me a condensed version in no more than a couple of sentences? MIKA: Well...things haven’t changed very much in many ways. We are still learning and trying to get better. We just have a few more sheep now :) MIEL: I found our first little store next to a sex shop, so for sure it had to be a winning spot! Right? I kept the exact location from Mika until we were ready with some things... SS: What do you love and loathe about working with one another? MIKA: I love that we complement each other really well in our abilities and our personalities. I have the greatest respect for Miel and really truly enjoy working together. I can’t think of anything that I

loathe about it. We are always brutally honest with each other but we play fair. MIEL: Many things…her sense of humor, she’s always honest, her work ethic is unreal. Her ability to create beautiful things and her ability to take concepts and apply them to make real things, and many more…She gets it. SS: I don’t have one thing that I don’t like, I’m not joking. What are each of your favorite items in your store, and why? MIKA: It’s difficult to pick a favorite. I think Miel said it best a few days back when he went to the store and said how all these things represent a part of our lives during the last 8 months or so. When I look at pieces I remember the time in my life when we made them, what was happening then, what music we were listening to, etc. I think it’s a pretty cool thought. MIEL: My favorite one is the OH LEAFY Dress. In my mind, that item represents a mix of both fantasy and reality, which is what SL is for me-- the combination of the impossible with the possible, in a very cool way. What is the oddest place you draw inspiration from? MIKA: I’m not sure... my head can be an odd place sometimes :) MIEL: I get lots of ideas while running or listening to music. SS: If you had one do-over since you’ve entered the world of SL fashion, what would it be? MIKA: Oh wow, nothing at all. We have met so many nice people and this place has taught us so much about working with each other and about ourselves. It has been an awesome experience! MIEL: I don’t have one either. SS: What do you think makes your creations unique? MIKA: I think anyone that draws their own stuff will end up with a unique style... I think it’s just a byproduct of doing your own textures and prims. SS: In the end, what matters is that you like what you are making and the coolest part is when other people are able to identify with it.

38 | Second Style Magazine

MIEL: Wow, for me the unique part is that we actually make them! We make what we think is cool and makes us happy and I hope that people get that. SS: Producing the kind of work you do at the pace you do must be exhausting. What keeps you going? MIKA & MIEL: Early on we both wanted this to be a fun experience. We create when an idea comes up and we never set any deadlines for ourselves. I think the most difficult part of creating is following through to the end. We have a strong friendship and working together makes it easier because you always have the other person to help, take over, or push you. So maybe its not that we make more things but maybe just that less things get discarded or left behind. We help each other focus. SS: Can each of you tell me something quirky about yourselves that our readers might not know? MIKA: Quirky…hmmm. I’m pretty vanilla I think. I keep odd working hours but that may not exactly be a quirky thing in SL :) MIEL: I have a shady past which is chalk full of quirkiness not appropriate for your readers. SS: What ideas do you have brewing for Miel right now? What might we expect to see from you in the coming months? MIKA & MIEL: I wish we could say but honestly we really have no clue :) We always work from day to day or week to week, no deadlines and no schedules. If an idea comes up we go for it. If it’s a good idea…we release it! SS: I’ll wrap up with a softball question: Favorite flavor of ice cream? MIKA: I’m not an ice cream fan, but if I have to have ice cream it would be pistachio and raspberry gelatti for me. But I would rather have a dark chocolate and coffee—yum! MIEL: Plain Chocolate. That is it!

Winter Wonderlands by Dancien Graves

Hello and Happy Holidays! Dancien Graves here to help you navigate your way through the sights and sounds of wintertime in Second Life. As Holiday Sims and parcels begin to pop up like the items on my politically correct holiday term wish list it is my intention to help you get started on your tour with these three lovely locations. Let us first begin with Winterstock.

Winterstock: Winterstock is located on the Merry Christmas Sim and is owned and created by Ewan Mureaux. It features a great many stores and retail booths. It’s open now and closes January 3rd. It also features a Ferris wheel, a small Christmas in Australia display, a large frozen lake which has both 7seas fishing and ice skating as well as some quiet sitting areas. In a small corner of the sim you’ll find a small church with a nativity scene. 58 | Second Style Magazine

Winter at Fruit Islands: Winter at Fruit Islands is owned and created by Dennis Lagan and Equinox Pinion. It features several buildings, a large skating area, quite places great for socializing or for photographs. If you look very carefully you’ll find a little cottage on a hill as well as two ice caves that are perfect for snuggling and socializing with your friends. Second Style Magazine | 59

Snoscape: A Midwest Winter Wonderland: It’s a mouthful so we’re just going to go ahead and call it Midwest Winter Wonderland. It’s owned and created by The Muse Crew and has by far the largest ice skating area I have ever seen. It’s features are numerous including: Skiing, Ice Skating, Couples Ice Skating, Hot Air Balloon Rides, Concessions, a small lodge for events, Snowball fights, Sleigh Rides, horseback riding and a whole lot more. These are just three of the many Sims I have found so far and it’s not even Thanksgiving at the time this article Hairyou - Sebastian (Black) Gritty Kitty is being written. So I am sure there are going to be a whole lot more by the time the reader see -this article. WINTER BOOTS By Felicity Blumenthal Boots have come such a long way in Second Life, and the ability to use sculpted prims was a major turning point. So for this issue’s mini-guide we are taking a look at some of the most amazing winter boots you can find in-world!

ANEXX 2 Way Belt Lace up Boots, Red (L$580) You can find tons of boots in ANEXX, so it was difficult to narrow down to just one. These feature loosely laced calf boots, with buckles that have a plaid or no plaid option. Normally this style might not be my thing, but they are done so well, they were a must have, and turns out, look amazing on.

Pixel Mode Rea Suede Boots, Coffee (L$380) These gorgeous mid calf boots are an amazing deal for the price if you ask me. Great stiletto heel, and foot shape, plus the strings on the boot have a color change hud, so you can mix them up a bit. KAO Suede Fringe Boots, Ash (L$300) For a much more casual and comfortable look, pick up these puppies. The fringe is obviously the WIN here, as well as the loose, worn fit. They do look like a pair you should have in your closet, don’t you think?

Kookie Pomski Boots, Black Forest (L$450) This would be the uber warm fuzzy pair in the bunch, pefect for your more “snowy” sims! You can’t deny loving these, the pom poms just call to you. You also get 3 different fur options with each pair you purchase!
