This May we are having a major flashback! Second Style’s 35th issue gives you a Second Life© take on some of our favorite decades. Our first stop on the trip back in time is brought to us by James Schwarz, where he finds himself stuck in the Summer of 1992. Both Clyde Saunders and Rylan Carling do it up 80’s style in this issue’s Color with Clyde and The look. Luna Jubiliee’s Mini Guide is all about shoes, and she tosses a few pairs from over the decades in your direction. Meanwhile Tenshi Vielle takes a different twist on a flashback, in a more “youthful” way with her article on Age Regression in Second Life. Elysium spans the 60’s for us with her fantastic spread this issue and Ana Lutetia has yet another Fresh Face for us, this time bringing us the stylings of Meriken Co. Gabby Panacek is back this month with a quick look at some well put together styles across the decades in To Top It Off. We again have some new faces this issue, and what a way to start things off! Stacie Pryor is taking over our Style Icon interviews, and for her first interview she has the lovely company of Riq Graves. Riq shares with us some exciting news about his upcoming project, which you will not want to miss out on! Another new to Second Style face is that of Jennaa Loire, who has an awesome knack for interior decorating and will be coming to us each month with her Fabulous Furnishing piece. Be sure to have a peek at her first article where she goes Retro! And lastly, you can get again get some hints from me with my Editor’s Picks for the month of May. I am sharing some fine accessories that you will want to add to your wardrobe.

fresh faces | Meriken Co. By Ana Lutetia

Yaszi Mornington is the designer that creates the Meriken Co. hand-drawn pretties and even thought it is mostly a male store, you can also find some great women’s items inside and it makes a great place for a shopping trip with your best friend. Meriken Co. has started around March 2008 and has up until now a great collection in casual men’s wear using

as inspiration Yaszi’s personal style and what he wants to wear. However, I do hope that Yaszi would create more women’s clothing because the attire for men looks amazing. The clothing comes with all layers and in different colour options or colour combinations.

“Carrousel” This is a classy Spring dress which can be found in several colour patterns. It has a beautiful squre neckline and a tiny belt around the waist for a more elegant look. “Doya” Tops+Skirt=Dress Doya can be a flirty sleeveless retro mini dress or a flowy skirt. It’s sold as separates and in different colour patterns. “PKR” + Meriken Co. Jeans #101 + Meriken Co. “IVONNE” Besides clothes, Yaszi is venturing into accessories and shoes. The PKR top is from the girl section but the 101 jeans are from the male section and are being worn as unisex. The Ivonne shoes are from the latest releases. “DOUX” + Meriken Co. “TBD” The girly look can also be attained with Meriken Co. items with DOUX skirt and TBD top.

Fashionable Furnishings | Retro by Jennaa Loire Retro is quite simply, something modeled from the past. But what does retro style mean to the individual? Retro is a style to have fun with, to be imaginative with and to relive the bright colors, unique textures, quirky and sometimes peculiar shapes that were the vogue of yesteryear. Retro furniture and décor can bring new life to any room, house or living area. It can add an individualism that only comes from the style of years gone by, yet compliments and enhances modern day fashion. Retro furniture and décor can reflect as much about a person’s character as

the clothes they adorn or the demeanor they portray. It is a unique, surprising and simply fun style to explore and its’ limits are only bound by your imagination and creative ingenuity. Retro furniture and décor is abundant on SL and there are some amazing designers who have some terrific items for you to discover. These items can vary from a vinyl record player to a buttoned leather desk chair. Wherever your inspiration comes from. Retro has something that is as individual as you!

THE LOOK

“The 80s Punk” by Rylan Carling Loud colors, mixed textures, and big hair are all staples of what we remember when we reminisce about the 80s. The Look and the music…nothing will ever compare to the era of Dead Kennedy’s, Minor Threat, Bad Religion, and so on. The perfect hair for this LOOK is Black Maria’s Rius, with pink tips. It gives just the right edge to the rest of the pieces. Emery’s Isabella shirt, paired with *aN*’s DS skirt is a must! And, of course, you can’t forget the skull, there always has to be a skull, and here it’s on the tights. I chose arm warmers for this, but remember those jelly bracelets? The necklace has to be a layered look, the more the better. Makeup, Belleza’s Elle, should be loud and bright. I chose the eye shadow with a shade of green to it. To finish up THE LOOK, you have to sport the pornstars, perfectly worn and used.

Style Icon Riq Graves by Stacie Pryor

Photography by Strawberry Singh

Sometimes I find myself drifting off in a daze, comforted by daydreams of moments long gone. Visions of my childhood are brought to the surface. I never really wanted to grow up, and in a lot of ways, I still haven’t. I recall the days when I had all the time in the world to plan creative and fun ways to enjoy my elementary existence. My worries and commitments were few and far between, and the simplicity of my life left plenty of time for silly pleasures.

My recollections awaken fond memories of days filled with a love for playing games, watching cartoons, enjoying the comfort of a stuffed animal, playing dress-up, and embracing the wonders of my own imagination. Laughter made my tiny piece of the world such a happy place, and I constantly sought the amusement and satisfaction of self-indulgence. Everything becomes so serious when you grow up. The rigidity of adulthood can make it difficult to remember just how much fun you used to have when the world seemed so much smaller. Luckily for me, there is a place in SL that takes me back. It is a hidden galaxy stocked with funfilled treasures. It is a place where laughter and nostalgia abound. It is a place where inspiration and imagination flourish. Reek is my treasure trove and safe haven for all things fun. Riq Graves is the master mind behind Reek, and he was gracious enough to share more about himself and his products with Second Style Magazine. I am in awe of his incredible talent and inspiring personality, and I am so grateful for his willingness to be so open in his first ever SL magazine interview. I tackled him with my own curious questions and prodded him to spill some secretive information about the future of Reek on the grid we call our second home. You are one of my favorite creators on the grid, and even though I don’t know you personally, I feel like I can get a good sense of your personality from the creative, fun, and light-hearted nature of your releases. What do you most hope to convey about yourself in your products? You’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head with what I try to put into the store and the products. As far as what I want to say about myself, I suppose the brand really is an offshoot of some weird childlike side of my personality. I’m not sure if it’s to its benefit or detriment, but I’ve never put any sort of fixed definition on what Reek is. I’ve got times where I just want to make something almost pointless and ridiculous like the Bullhorn or News Microphone because they’re silly things that make me laugh for some unknown reason. Other times I want to make things like the Loft Skybox or the Snowy Cottage and give it more of a soul than a punchline. I feel like it’s not really a one dimensional store, and while it might confuse some people, it keeps the medium unrestrained and keeps me happy. Nostalgia is a recurring theme in Reek, and you do it so incredibly well. What inspires you the most to create such awesome blasts from the past? I’m not in any kind of rush to grow up, at least not in the sense of losing everything that’s great about being 40 | Second Style Magazine

a kid. The imagination, the creativity, the feeling that your entire life is ahead of you without responsibility or sadness - they’re all feelings that I associate with the years I made Ninja Turtle weapons from cardboard and watched Saturday morning cartoons more than I went to Sunday mass. They’re times that I link tangibly with items like the Reeker Keeper and the Red Wagon. I’ve worked with kids for most of my life, and I have such an adoration and respect for them and everything that childhood embodies. I hate that I no longer look at the woods as a place for adventure, but rather a good place to get Lyme disease. SL is everyone’s way of escaping reality and sometimes Reek is my way of escaping maturity. Congratulations are in order because you just celebrated Reek’s first anniversary on April 23! Since your grand opening over a year ago, your product line has expanded from a couple of belts and tees to include prefabs, hats, shoes, home furnishings, and some of the most fun and inventive products on the grid. What has inspired the evolution of your new releases? Thanks so much! It’s been a really good year since starting Reek, mainly because of the amazing support everyone has given the store. The store really did just start with belts and tees in a little store on Starlust, and now I’ve moved to the Reek sim and I really have a tough time constraining myself to making certain things. I think I’d go crazy if I had to limit Reek to being a clothing store or a prefab store or a furniture store or any one thing. It might sound weird, but the inspiration for the evolution of the store is really inspiration itself. I’m inspired by all sorts of different things, and I’ve never really been able to shut out an idea that I really like and say “No, I just make clothes.” If I ever avoid an idea I like it’s probably because I feel it’s out of my skill set. I am truly amazed by your skills, and I am even more blown away with each new release. What are some things you have learned from designing in SL? And which of your skills do you think have made the most progress? As far as learning, practically all of it. I’ve been interested in graphic design for years before I even knew about Second Life, but what I did before and what I do now really boils down to the differences in 2D and 3D. I’ve always been a sucker for typography, layouts, and really all those kinds of 2D visual forms. I always considered myself to have a bit of a 3D handicap when it came to real life sculpture or work of any kind. Somehow SL broke the habit and now I’m more in love with sculpting and 3D programs than I am with Photoshop. So yeah, I’d say just the fact

Continued on page 44 > Second Style Magazine | 43

Style Icon | Riq Graves < continued from page 43

that I had never worked in 3D beyond the past year, that would be what I’ve learned and loved the most. Reek is one of the hottest shops in SL, and you must spend a great deal of time maintaining your business in addition to creating new releases. What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a business owner in SL? The hardest thing about working in SL full time would have to be the balancing act of making sure you’re not neglecting the things in the real world that matter most, like your family, friends, and health. I think we know it’s all too easy to get wrapped up in something in SL and find that the day has just passed you by. It’s the same with me and an exciting concept or project. Sometimes I have to force myself to take a step back and just know that whatever I’m working on will be there when I sit back down. To be honest, I would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite item in Reek because there are so many awesome and fun items from which to choose. What are your three favorite items, and why? It’s funny because I’d have to say that my favorite items are always the ones that aren’t released yet. If I really like an idea for an item I’ll usually take more time on it, and that time spent usually makes me really start to like the results. However, after countless hours spent on the same thing, I slip into a frame of mind where I just want to be done with it already. It’s an odd little cycle that keeps me productive and always looking to what I’m making tomorrow. The Reek mainstore is one of the most innovative and visionary mainstores I have ever seen. I know it had to be a blast planning it out and finally seeing it in all its glory upon completion. What was your main inspiration for it, and how much fun did you have putting it all together? The Galaxy build concept is a branch off from the main themes of the store, which are basically things I loved from my childhood. Every kid dreams of being an astronaut and living on the moon or in a space station or what it’s like to be in zero gravity or firing ray guns at aliens. It’s one of the coolest jobs you can have, and over the decades our imaginations have run rampant with thoughts, not just about what space is, but what space could be. I’ve always been interested in things like space and dinosaurs - things that combine a little bit of science with a whole lot of adventure. I plan on expanding the galaxy to feature more planets, more rockets, more everything. It’s just tough because when I’m working on the store, time is taken away from working on new products, and I’m very much a person that likes moving on to what’s new. So new addons are planned and coming, but it’s just so much more fun to

44 | Second Style Magazine

work on the next project than to revisit old ones. It is so obvious that you have a great sense of humor, and although it’s obvious that you have to work quite a bit in SL to have such a steady stream of new releases, I am sure you make time for all of the fun aspects of SL, too. What are some of your favorite things to do when you are not working so hard? Actually it’s quite the opposite. I rarely make time for any other aspects of Second Life besides the building. I’ve got a build platform that I work on and I rarely leave it. I suppose I’m a bit of a SL shut-in, but I’ve got a couple good friends that I’m always talking with and I’ve always got something new in the works, and honestly, I love my job. I’m kind of a workaholic, and when I’m not working, I’m wondering why I’m not working. People might think that I’m really missing out on the good stuff in SL, but honestly, I feel like I’m just so comfortable where I am now and I’ve never been happier with the balance I’ve struck between RL and SL. We all have our own reasons for logging into SL everyday, so what keeps you coming back? Honestly? The creation. The need to make something today better than what I made yesterday, and the great feeling I get to see something new taking shape. Self expression or whatever you want to call it - Reek has become my outlet and a bit of a necessity in my life for more reasons than one. You just released a huge string of amazing new summer releases, but I am sure you have something up your sleeve for the rest of the summer. What can we expect to see at Reek in the coming months? The summer should have a bunch of releases from Reek, with clothing, prefabs and some other things mixed in. The big thing that I’m really most excited about is something that’s been kept pretty low on the radar for a while now, but It’s far along enough that I thought it would be nice to give you guys a sneak peek. The Reek Battle Karts, a fun, easy to play go kart game, should make their debut over the next couple months. It’s been a project for a few months now and I’ve got some pretty big plans for it. It’s going to involve an advanced web server that keeps track of all your stats as you play games with your friends, allowing you to unlock customizable parts for your kart the more you play. You’ll drive around, throw bombs, drop oil slicks, and try to knock your friends out to be the last one standing. Keep an eye out, it’s coming as soon as I can get it to you! Color with Clyde | PURPLE By Clyde Saunders

In this month of “Color with Clyde”, to coincide with the “flashback” theme of the magazine, I chose to go all out in the eighties! This issue I am going with purple; an eye-catching, powerful color. Some of the noticeable trends of the eighties that I have picked up on were the mohawk, wayfarer sunglasses, argyle, and high-top shoes. I was lucky enough that a culmination of various designers all had great and unique items that I was able to discover during this month. The following are the irresistible items that I had to share with all of you! First up, I am wearing a pair of wayfarer sunglasses and the leather blouson jacket in purple. These eighties styled sunglasses from CheerNo were a great deal and even have a color change option on the side of the glasses. There are many color options, so these sunglasses can be worn and altered to match just about any outfit. The leather blouson in purple from AOHARU is a classic piece in a great shade of purple. These jackets, like all items from AOHARU come in a huge array of colors, and I find that this shade of purple really compliments the sunglasses very well. In the first outfit that I compiled this month I am wearing an*FIR* Argyle Vest, AOHARU Elegant Suit shirt, and *REDGRAVE* pants, which were specifically tinted to match the vest. I really enjoyed creating this look, and I think for spring, its great to stand out with some bright colors. The vest from *FIR* is awesome, and works well with any outfit and I find that the Elegant Suit shirt from AOHARU is the perfect match for this sweater. It gives a carefree addition to the preppiness of the argyle vest. To finalize the outfit, I colored a pair of white *REDGRAVE* pants to match the vest. This is certainly an outfit full of great eighties trends. The last item I love is from Hoorenbeek; The All Star Hi Top sneakers are so detailed, it will feel just like you are wearing a pair you may have previously owned in the eighties. These shoes are fun to own and can be worn with any casual outfit, to bring out your inner rebel. Now go check out these awesome stores!

TO TOP IT OFF

Fashion trends come and go. Today’s fashion-forward must have is tomorrow’s faux pas. Each decade is notable for its fashion highs...and lows. Here we take a look at styles from the 70s, 80s and 90s, updated with on trend accessories. Nevermind bell bottoms and polyester, what we love most about seventies fashion is the unstructured fluidity. Think long lines, softly draped fabrics and a little exotic elegance reminiscent of Sofia Loren. 80s

The maxim “less is more’ does not apply to eighties fashion. Instead, fashionistas of the decade sought self-expression by piling on the accessories, the more the better. Shoes Through the Decades By Luna Jubilee If there’s anything that reminds me of the passing times, it would have to be shoes and hair. How many times have you looked at old pictures and wondered “What was I wearing?” Since hair might be a bit too embarrassing, this months’ miniguide will feature some of my favorite shoes from past decades. If any one shoe style captures the 50s for me, it’s the saddle shoe. This pair from JetDoll would fit perfectly with a skirt, white blouse, and bobby socks. Shoes shown: *JetDoll* - Sculpted Saddle Shoes Female :: Classic 200L For the 60s, there’s always the classic Mary Jane pump. While this pair from Indyra Originals has a modern flair, it still has a lot of the classic elements that make Mary Janes so timeless. I’m sure any decade icon could still

get her vacuuming done in these shoes. Shoes shown: I.O. Coquette Noir Shoes: Josephine: Black 650L The 70s were a time of warm colors and platforms. Everyone seemed to want an extra inch or two and this pair of wedges from Shiny Things delivers, available in a variety warm tones that would be at home on a dance floor. Shoes shown: (Shiny Things) Jane Wedges - rust 300L In the 80s, all that lift went from shoes to hair instead. And what goes better with ripped jeans and teased up hair than a pair of extra-high canvas boots? This realistic pair from Urban Bomb Unit fits the bill perfectly, with scripted color and style chair to match your “totally radical” wardrobe. FLASHBACKS: Regressing in Second Life One of the things I love most about Second Life is the ability to regress - which is what we do every time we hunt up a nostalgic item from our past in the virtual world. We regress. We remember our childhoods, we remember growing up and the innocence of it all. Well, innocence for most of us. There are some ageplayers in Second Life who use it as a platform to expand away from - or increase - child sexual perversion, but that’s a whole other beast which will not be covered in this article. Think of child sex avatars versus child play avatars as the difference between a donkey and a zebra. Sure, they look similar - but they’re not the same. I have a child avatar shape in Second Life and previously spent time on it running around the Grid with Emma Gilmour, having ourselves a good old time. Callie Cline and myself also have used child shapes in previous days to goof around. There’s something about being four feet tall and looking like you’re six that adds instant hilarity to any situation. Everyone regresses at some point in

Age Regression

< continued from page 58 Second Life; child avatars just choose to show it more blatantly. Child avatars have always had a bad rap in Second Life. Most shop owners will ban any avatar shorter than what they deem an “adult” sized avatar. I have had adults playing adults in Second Life banned from stores simply because they are too short. People are terrified of child

avatars because of the aforementioned “kink” type kid avatars and are therefore closed-minded to anything related. Two of the best child avatars I’ve met are Francii Loxely and JaimeJo Myoo , both adults in real life but happy go lucky kids in-world. Finding content for shorter avatars can be a problem, so they have started a blog, Cosmic Scribbles, found at http://cosmic-scribbles.blogspot. com/ . In real life, Francii is a 21 year old female from the UK, while JaimeJo is a 19 year old female, also from the UK. They started Cosmic Scribbles due to a rising number of fun-loving child avatars and a serious lack of regularly updated blogs aimed towards Second Life kids. Today, instead of judging someone else’s innocent SL simply because they are short, try taking a step in their shoes. Play virtual baseball. Go down the e-slide. Find some swings. Have fun. Occasionally, you really need an escape - and what better place than Second Life?
