Yard House at La Cantera
By: Jennifer Moczygemba-Delgado
Tasteful, elegant, yet still friendly for a young crowd dropping in for a drink. The Yard House, located in La Cantera Mall, has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for all ages. From beginning to end your dining experience is sure to be warm, along with great food and drinks. The Yard House’s menu includes a variety of options to choose from. Starting with appetizers you can select from a snack, a smaller portion (about half the size of the usual appetizer) or a normal sized appetizer. I personally went with the snack size because the regular sizes are too filling for me. I ordered the Chips and Guacamole topped with pico del gallo and feta cheese. Being a San Antonio local this is always one of my favorite appetizers. The Yard House’s chips were light and crispy, not at all greasy. The guacamole was tasteful and had a light lime flavor. The pico del gallo, perfect, not to watery, or over spiced with cilantro, then to top it off, the feta cheese, which gave it a nice twist. The feta cheese turns this simple dish into an elegant delight. The main courses offer a wide selection, from 11am-5pm you can indulge in the lunch menu, which includes a verity of sandwich and salad combinations. The restaurant also has its 18 _Celebritynights.com_December/January
main menu to choose from with choices such as burgers, pizza, steaks and “House Favorites.” My selection was off the “House Favorites,” I ordered the Orange Peel Chicken. The presentation of the dish was beautiful. The bright orange sauce against the light and dark greens of the Bok Choy made everything pop. The chicken was not over cooked but just right. It had a very light batter; the orange sauce included some spice and gave the dish a nice punch. For the side dish, white steamed rice which was cooked to perfection. The portion of this meal was an average size and worth the price. I had enough left over for a second meal. The Yard House does have one additional aspect which makes it stand out amongst other dine-in restaurants. The restaurant offers an extensive variety of draft beer, but has five which rotate monthly, it offers the most unique hard to find beers, so if you are looking for a rare beer or just something new to drink then the Yard House is the place to go. For the non-beer drinkers it has a full bar and wine selection available.

Carlos Flores
Free Form, Spray Can Artist By: Jennifer Moczygemba-Delgado
How often do you go to an art opening and get to see an artist create a live piece right before your eyes? In many cases never, but when you visit Carlos, a local San Antonio Free Form Artist, you will see him construct his pieces every time. You will be wowed by his amazing talent with a medium of spray cans. He manipulates layers of wet paint with metal lids, news-paper and years of talent all in about seven minutes. Carlos mainly paints scenes of the universe adding unique features. You can call his type of art “Surreal Sci-Fi.” “I enjoy painting scenes of outer space because I am a science geek. I love science, Star Trek and Star Wars are my favorites,” explained Carlos. Carlos, a former street skater, happened to fall in front of former local Free Form Artist Carey Huckaby, one First Friday. Six hours later Carlos was still there. “I fell in love with the form and idea,” Carlos said. Carlos was so intrigued he became Huckaby’s apprentice for two years before he even began to paint. Huckaby then got an opportunity to go to Austin and a spot at S. Alamo and Beauregard St. opened up (where he currently still performs every First Friday). Carlos knew if he didn’t take this opportunity someone else would. “I borrowed some money from my mom and got a note from her allowing me to use spray cans; I was underage at the time, and here I am today. “That was back in 1999,” shared Carlos. When Carlos is not giving his beloved art fans a live show, he is fulfilling his second love of science at San Antonio College. There he is a Scientist and works in the Geology Museum as Curator. Carlos is also married to his wife Christina who is also a Free Form Artist. Currently, First Friday is the only place he does reoccurring shows and sells his work, but he has performed at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, San Antonio’s Central Public Library, The Shops at La Cantera, San Antonio College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, Our Lady of the Lake University, Trinity University and Texas State University San Marcos. You can also follow Carlos on Facebook at facebook.com/freeformartists
Chalk It Up presented by Artpace
By: Jennifer Moczygemba-Delgado
Red balloons lined the sidewalks; chalk dust filled the air and covered the street of Houston and its sidewalks. Groups of kids were settled on the ground, they drew with the colorful fat pieces of chalk that were left in buckets throughout the event. Artists sectioned off specific areas especially for their masterpieces and worked persistently to finish the job. In the near distance, sounds of live music and the smell of fresh Kettle Corn. When thinking of chalk, most think of hopscotch and foursquare, when creative individuals think of chalk they are inspired to make art. 2012’s 9th Annual Chalk It Up Festival proved this. Walking down San Antonio’s chalk covered Houston Street, one was taken on a colorful journey of moving art. Finished products ranged from blue haired mermaids, to a realist Woody Allen portrait, to eagles with swag. Four blocks of vibrant murals lye on the historic brick street, adding to its rich history. In 2011 over 10,000 people came out to Chalk It Up, and in 2012 there were expected to be at least 20,000. Presented by Artpace, Chalk It Up is an all ages event promoting the importance of art education. 2012’s event featured 20 professional contemporary artists, 44 teams, a “Freestyle” area where the community was encouraged to participate with the creation of a collaborative mural and best of all a kid zone. The attendees indulged in the opportunity to draw alongside fellow artists. Exclusively focused on their art, no one seemed to care about the fact they were covered with chalk powder from head to toe. What a wonderful site, an entire community came together to create art. Green, blue and yellow chalk powder smashed against the ground fulfilling a street-level gallery. Nine years in the making, Chalk It Up is definitely worth checking out.

What is your definition of an outstanding student? Someone who takes pride in everything they do, someone who takes pride in the classroom, in their relationships they make. Don’t take for granted the people who are important to you. When you are in the academy world you meet a lot of people who would like to help you, so you have to put forth your best effort. Success is measured in a bunch of different ways but if you can look those people who have helped you in their eyes, then you are successful. How have you adjusted from playing high school football to college? In high school you have one or two players who are the best, those are the ones you have to watch out for. In college, you have all of the best players, so quickness is more evident. I’ve adjusted the same way I do everything else, by putting my best effort forward, and by trying to work harder than everyone else.
Nate Leonard
UTSA
Football Center-Outstanding Student
Along with being an incredible football player you’re also a writer? How did this happen? I had a great foundation in writing from elementary, middle and high school. I have always enjoyed expressing my thoughts and the details of my life nobody knows about me. Being able to share my experiences is an awesome feeling.
by Jennifer M-Delgado
“If you know what you are worth then you’ve got to go out and get what your worth,” stated Nate Leonard, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners football Center. “Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t do it. You have to listen to those few people who believe in you, and never give up on yourself.” Many times during Leonard’s search for a division one football program, numerous people, including some of his friends told him he couldn’t make it, but he shut them out. “There are pivotal moments in life which define who you are and seizing those moments are what determine whether the underdog can make it or not,” shared Leonard. “I believe I took one of those moments and ran with it.” Leonard first geared up for football in the third grade when he was about nine years old. Growing up outside of Dallas, in McKinney, Texas, football became a way of life. Football became a release of frustration along with a physical and mental challenge which Leonard fell in love with. 20 _Celebritynights.com_December/January
Along with his father driving Leonard to follow his ambition, the American dream is what kept the fire alive in his heart. “I believe the American dream is to be the best at what you do. Being able to look in the eyes of the people who believe in you, makes it worth it.” Along with contributing to UTSA’s football program, Leonard also writes for The Huffington Post. In early August, Leonard was approached by Brian Hernandez, UTSA’s Associate Athletics Communications Director, with an option to have his own blog on The Huffington Post. With his knack for writing, Leonard knew this was a great opportunity for him. “I don’t know how The Huffington Post choose me but they did and I couldn’t say no,” explained Leonard. Playing football for any college team can put a lot of pressure on the players as they are in the spotlight at all times. Leonard on the other hand has additional eyes on him for he is one of the spokespersons for the team. Stepping up and talking with media can break anyone as they know every move of theirs is being watched. Every detail of their life is under the microscope from what they eat, to what they wear, to what they do in their free time. Leonard deals with this by remaining humble and by treating everyone with equal importance. Advice for the football newcomers, “Remember who you are, people will try and change you and break you, but remember to stay true to yourself. Stay the person you were raised,” shared Leonard. In other words make momma proud.
How do you juggle being a student, a football player and a writer for The Huffington Post? Great time management. I try to find more time in the day to do more of the things I love. Many people may think some of what I do is a chore, but not when it’s the things I enjoy. Other than football and writing what are some of your hobbies? I’m an artist, in the past I did a lot of acrylic paintings. One painting of mine that won several awards was a picture of white horses with colorful mains. I also used to write a lot of poetry and in the past, I entered it in the Mocking Bird contest. I always placed in the top three. One day I hope to get back to this. Do you participate in any other clubs or school activities? I am the head football coach of Zeta Tou Alpha Powder Puff Football Team at UTSA. What are your plans after you graduate? I try to keep an open mind, but I would really like to become a college football coach, and have the same impact on my players that my coaches have had on me.

Thousands of people came from all over to experience the annual fall festival. Live music created the perfect environment for the large event. Over 40 bands played delightful tunes, all there to enhance your Wurstfest experience. Featured bands included, die Bayrische 7, a band from Munich, Germany, as well as Jimmy Sturr and his Orchestra, Alex Meixner and Alpenfest. Over the 10 day celebration, appetites were satisfied with a variety of foods on-a-stick. One highlight was the obvious wurst. Featured in several diverse ways such as the traditional, on a stick with a roll, in a pita and infused with cheese. There was even a Wurstkabab , which showcased five different types of wurst, a great way to taste a bunch all at once. The Ruben sandwich was also a popular choice. Beer, the beverage Germans tend to be known for, and one drink Wurstfest was certainly not short of. Seven diverse German beers, flowed from pitchers, mugs and the taps, giving the attendees the true taste of Germany. The scene was filled with traditional German clothing, funky hats such as large beer mugs, chicken heads and many more. Along with theatrical scene was the feeling of delight. 2012 Margarita Pour Off
Thirty years of great margaritas, live music and community. 99.5 KISS FM hosted its 30th Annual Margarita Pour Off in September of 2012. The Margarita Pour Off was located at Sunken Garden Theater in Brackenridge Park. The Sunken Garden Theater was a great place for the event given it had an accessible stage for live music, seats for visitors and plenty of open area to enjoy all the amenities. The Margarita Pour Off offered a variety of options to have a wonderful time. You had of course the Margarita samples the first half of the day, the food, which ranged from hamburgers, fajitas, gorditas and many other options; for non- tequila drinkers there was beer, then the live music for entertainment. The lineup included five bands, some such as One Action and Drowning Mona played a double set. The 2012 Margarita Pour Off was moved to September, which gave its attendees a break from the heat, a change everyone was grateful for. “This was my second year attending; I decided to come this year because the Pour Off moved to September, August is way too hot,” stated Mike, 25. Mike’s favorite margarita was from D Spot, “neither the mix nor liquor over powered the drink, everything was perfect.”
Overall 22 vendors participated in the competition, which made for a stiff battle, but Matamoros wasn’t intimated. Former Grand Champion Winner and four time People’s Choice, during the past six years Matamoros participated; Matamoros knows how to make a margarita. Matamoros continues to participate in the Pour Off because the team loves to interact with 3000 people as well as the opportunity to get its name out to the public. The food at the Pour Off is another addition to the party and part of what boosts the attendance. Diane and Moses Manchaca have joined the tequila drinkers for 20 years now. In the past they came for the margaritas, but now the food is the key. “I actually did not try a margarita,” shared Diane, we’ve attended the event 20 years and love the environment and the food; that is what has brought us back every year.” It seems this event included everything to keep a party alive; cold margaritas, great food, live music and a friendly atmosphere. Will you be at the Margarita Pour off in 2013?

An Experience Worth Having The Music Festival that never fails to impress by Frank Stevenson
I can’t explain how much I love music festivals. I have been to many festivals in the past, mostly consisting of the EDM genre, but Austin City Limits is by far the greatest festival I have ever been to. This was my year attending ACL and I had an absolute blast! As I was walking to the entrance to the festival I could already hear the bands playing and the crowds cheering and as soon as I entered the park I could feel the energy. The one thing I always loved about Austin is the people. At ACL, you definetly see the diversity as you look around. Babies, children, parents, elderly, students, business men and hippies coming together for one common bond that is music, it’s quite a beautiful site to see. This year offered a great lineup of bands that see the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Crystal Castles, M83, Weezer, Gotye, The Shins, Florence + The Machine, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many more! I wanted to see as many bands as possible but with so many playing at the same time and across different stages that ranged on opposite sides of the huge Zilker Park, I had to be a little selective (so of course I picked my favorites). Seeing some of my favorite bands play live is always a great experience and one to remember. I give a little more elaboration on my top picks on the next page. One popular attraction across the three ACL days was the great food they had to offer! I could barely wrap my head around all the selections that were being offered and I wanted to try them all, but only had three days to do so. Some of the foods that really won me over were the “kick ass nachos” by Tim Love’s Love Shack, “Kimchi Fries Beef ” by Chi’lantro, the mind blowing delicious “Tiffwich (Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich)” by Tiff ’s Treats, and of course possible the best kettle corn I’ve ever tasted by Children of the Kettle Corn. With so many options to choose from I could only try some of the food this year, and hopefully next year I’ll be able to try more.

My first year at Austin City Limits left me impressed, inspired and in total awe. This festival was definetly a great experience and one I will continue to seek each and every year. With next year being two fun filled weekends of music, I’m sure ACL will continue to impress and out perform themselves.
2 1 0 2 l a v i t s e F c i Mus Day 1 Having arrived a little late to Day 1 of Austin City Limits I was only able to see Florence + The Machine, M83, AVICII and The Black Keys all of which gave great performances. Even though they all proved themselves on stage, I have to say that M83 completely blew me away with their set. The high energy, crowd, light show and sound were perfect during M83’s performance and one I will remember for some time to come. I have seen AVICII before at Ultimate Music Experience in South Padre Island during this past spring break and he was great then and proved to still be great now, always giving a great show. I was really excited to see The Black Keys but must admit that even though they had a great show, I just wasn’t feeling it as much as I was with the other bands. In fact I only stayed for about half of their show to experience some more food.
Day 2 As the days went by the experience became better and better. About ten minutes after arriving for day 2, it started pouring rain and one would think this is a bad thing, but it was definetly fun. Even in the pouring rain, the music continued, the crowd is cheering, dancing and running through the rain. You could feel the sense of freedom and carelessness, and it was wonderful! My favorite performance of the day and one throughout the whole festival had to be The Shins. Being one of my favorite bands, I was really looking forward to seeing The Shins perform and they gave a great show. They were definetly a highlight for me during this entire festival. I also checked out BASSNECTAR who had some really awesome beats that you could hear across the whole park, Gotye which I found humorous as people just waited for him to play “Somebody I use to Know” and then left, and Jack White who also really stood out.
Day 3 Day 3 had arrived and by this point, my inner hippie had come out, I felt more chill and free than I ever have before and music continued to play. On Day 3, I will admittedly say that I really only cared about Two Door Cinema Club and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I spent a lot of Day 3 eating the great food the festival had to offer, while also enjoying some of the other bands that were playing like Kimbra, Stars and Tennis. A little before Two Door Cinema Club was about play I rushed over to the Bud Light stage to secure a good spot in the middle and then the amazingness began. This was probably the most energetic show I went to during the festival, the crowd was constantly singing along and jumping up and down during this performance. Their show was perfect and I couldn’t have asked for it to be any different, only to last longer. Finally at the end of the festival the great Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage. Being a fan since I was a child, I was really excited in seeing them perform live for the first time. RHCP succeeded all my expectations and went beyond them. This show was an absolute great ending to ACL. “Californication” is by far one of my favorite songs of all time and hearing it live was one of the greatest things I have ever experienced. I was not dissapointed at all by Red Hot Chili Peppers performance.

FUNFUNFUN Fest People gather for a crazy weekend of music, food, fun! by Frank Stevenson
I couldn’t help but compare this festival to Austin City Limits as I attended that festival only two weeks earlier and it was still present in my mind. With the bar set so high from ACL this year, I have to say I was a little dissapointed by Fun Fun Fun Fest. This was my first year attending and as I was quit excited for a few of the bands that were going to play, I didn’t feel like this festival lived up to its name. Don’t get me wrong, it was still a good time, but I think my expectations were a little to high on this one. Prior to the festival, I see the lineup consisting of Minus the Bear, Explosions in the Sky and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros playing on the same stage, which got me excited enough to attend another three day festival. I arrived on the first day just as Minus the Bear was going to play, waiting in line anxiously thinking I was going to miss some of the show. Luckily I get my pass and get through the front gate just in time. They rocked out another great show, playing ev32 _Celebritynights.com_December/January
erything from their old songs to their new songs. Only having a 45 minute set, they couldn’t play as many as I hoped for but I still had a great time watching them. After watching Minus the Bear, I thought it was time to experience the great food the festival had to offer. Possibly one of my favorite things to do at these festivals is trying out all the food that I’ve never had before. I tried most of the foods such as Austin’s Pizza, Tiff ’s Treats and some Kimich Fries from Chi’Lantro. Out of all the food I have to say that the Hotdog wrapped in bacon by Black Sheep Lodge was one of the most delicious hotdogs I have ever had. With all these treats I always got a cherry limeade from JuiceLand which was my favorite beverage out of all of them. During all the delicious food the music continued playing throughout the day. I wasn’t very familiar with the bands playing on day 2, so I didn’t stick to just one stage, I wandered around checking out the entire festival. By day 3, the time had to come to watch Explosions in the Sky play live and one I was very excited about seeing. Their performance was pure beauty in itself and a performance I will remember for some time to come
and only strengthen my love for their music. “We live here, we are you, we are eachother” were words said by Explosions in the Sky before they started their show and it gave you a more personal feeling towards the group. Immediately following their performance it was time for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros to take the stage and give a great show. This show was by far the most energetic group I have seen at this festival and their leadman Alex Ebert showed no limits. At one point in the show he actually grabbed two girls from the audience and got on stage and sang along with the band which I thought was awesome. He also threw the mic at another audience member to share their story in the part of their song “Home.” Their show was an experience in itself. Overall I would give the festival a solid 7, and hopefully next year they have a better overall lineup across all stages. Even though Fun Fun Fun Fest didn’t exceed my expectations I will be there again next year to check it out. Austin always shows me a good time and I will continue to support the music scene for years to come.

COUNTRY NESTOR SINGER & MUSICIAN
ANDRESS Interview | Laura Tamez Photography | Cheko Tapia Location | Winks saloon, Grill & Roping Arena
34 _Celebritynights.com_December/January
“I love country music because of its purity, its genuine and it’s real; it’s about life.” December/January_Celebritynights.com_ 35
Can you tell us a little about yourself? “I’m originally from Brownsville, TX, I was born in 1988 I have two older brothers and two little sisters, and lived in Brownsville almost all my life.” Have you always loved music? “I’ve always loved music as long as I can remember. If I could look back to my life when I was a kid I can put together a song for all those times and memories.” When did you actually find out music was your thing? “That’s a funny thing because I’ve always loved to sing, but I never knew I could do it until high school when somebody said that they thought I had a “pretty sound”, a girl of course, and they suggested I try out for the high school ministry at church so I started singing there. At that point in my life I started doing a lot of research and finding out my purpose in life, looking for direction. When you are in high school I guess you try to find who you really are so I kind of lost myself into the ministry and searching for answers. Through God is where I found who I really am, it just comes so natural.” Why country? “I’ve always loved country, I haven’t been always 100% country my whole life, I do like all genres of music but I love country music because of its purity, its genuine and it’s real; it’s about life. One of my passions is life: the good, the bad, the sad, the happy, the ups and downs. Country allows me to express myself in those exact things.” Are you a composer as well? “I am. It’s kind of cool and you can actually find on iTunes a couple of the songs that have been played on the radio.” What is your favorite song? “That’s hard; it’s like asking a mom and dad who is your favorite child, they make them all. I got to say it changes; they all have their own meaning, their own little way of moving my soul and a certain part of my heart that I really care about. The song that I enjoyed the most when writing was the one about my mom, just because of the way it came about and how it was written.” When did you start writing? “I’ve always loved to write, I’m able to put things together. My favorite subject throughout my career years has always been English, I was the Literature type of guy. I am a very expressive person, I like to read between the lines.” Do you consider music your career? “Absolutely. A year ago, last August, I sat down and said I’m going to commit to this, I want to go for it, and I want to say it’s been a hell of a ride so far because so much has happened in a year. I’ve toured through all the state of Texas, I have shared stage with a lot of different people and there is something I realize: there are some people that are good at what they do when developing a skill and there are people that were born to do certain things. When I get on that stage and start singing and interacting it’s just as easy as breathing; I come alive when I do it. The impact that it has had among a lot of strangers which I consider now friends and fans has been great.” Nestor has opened for different artists in different cities, especially Tracy Lawrence which he considers one of the best experiences he has had as far as the reaction of the crowd, and even signing autographs for about 3 hours. “It got to the point that I misspelled my own name, it was one of those beautiful things to see the love and support from people.” What goes through your mind when you are on stage? “It’s such a beautiful thing. I don’t think too much when I’m getting on the stage, all I’m thinking about is music. At the concert, when I looked out there and I hear them singing my songs it’s one of those magical moments when I know I’m exactly where I need to be.”
36 _Celebritynights.com_December/January
What is one of the main obstacles you have encountered? “It’s kind of hard since I’m a solo act, only me and my guitar and I’ve been doing that for a year now. It’s harder to get to shows and get hired when it’s just you and your guitar because they don’t know you and they don’t know what to expect. “ Nestor is currently working on a music video for his song “I’m with you” and going through all that process, making it look natural. What is one of your major goals? “I’m a man of direction and passion and I know what I want in life. As far as the music goes, when I committed myself on this decision. I asked myself two questions and wrote it down on my notepad because I didn’t want to be on the road coming back and asking myself why am I doing this so I asked myself why I love music so much. Music is my best friend; it’s been there for me as long as I can remember. Growing up without a dad was hard. I’ve had a beautiful life, my mom has done a beautiful job, and she’s my hero, but it has been hard because a lot of the times you look for that direction, someone to guide you, a fatherly figure, so music a lot of times gave me that guide, that comfort and seeing things the way I could never have. The second question that I asked was why would I want to play, sing, and write music, and my answer was that I wanted to do that; to have music that is going to be there for people like it has been there for me and share it with the world.” Nestor currently plays at different locations in Brownsville such as Philly’s, Trails End, and Wing Barn, who he considers is one of his “unofficial sponsors”. What is your next project? “I’ve been writing a lot, my most recent album was released in July so for now my biggest project is the music video.” So, tell me about your EP Album “Shoot Me Down.” The story behind this EP and the four original tracks is pretty simple but deep. It’s entitled, “Shoot Me Down” after the first track for the reason that the album in its entirety shares a message and the message is simple; Never give up, have faith, and make the most of what you’ve got for what you want. Where can we find your EP Album? You can find and purchase the EP Album “Shoot Me Down” on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and more. Downtown Houston’s Hotel ZaZa, the second from the Dallas-based group, puts decadence first, and you won’t confuse it for a business chain anytime soon. Standard rooms are deluxe, but not as overtly hedonistic as the Magnificent Seven, the eight—yes, eight—luxury suites, each featuring an entirely different theme, played out in the fabrics, furniture, extras, and amenities like whirlpool garden tubs and plasma screens. Smaller “concept” suites range from Geisha House, lavishly decorated in shades of red. This is no shrinking violet of a hotel; public and semi-public spaces are emphasized accordingly. Onstaff planners help organize events in the hotel’s gigantic ballrooms and meeting areas. Choices include a room with its very own peephole or more clandestine enclosures decorated with drapery, mirrors, chandeliers, and zebra- or leopard-print carpet. Monarch, the onsite lounge and restaurant, pleases Houstonites and travelers alike with its take on new and classic American fare (think steak, short ribs, and sushi).

Upstairs is a seafood restaurant where you can enjoy another large aquarium while you have a bite to eat. This is quite a lot more than your average natural history museum. Yes, it has everything you expect (and some you might not): dinosaur skeletons, displays of Texas wildlife, a stunning gem and mineral collection, and exhibits on early cultures of the Americas, climatology, chemistry, and oil and gas exploration. But what gets most of the buzz is the miniature rainforest environment created in the Butterfly Center. You can walk among hundreds of living butterflies as they dance about in the steamy air amid a small waterfall. As you enter, you pass through the insect zoo, which holds some fascinating and bizarre living specimens of beetles, spiders, and other bugs that you wouldn’t necessarily want running around freely with you.
