A
Mouthwatering Experience
By Stephen Araiza
Traveling throughout Houston in search for the best service and food I could get my hands on. Little did I know how much of a gold mine Chama Gaucha was.
8 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 59
A co-worker of mine one day asked if I wanted to go to Chama Gaucha for lunch, I curiously ask what kind of food they serve and he responds, “It is a Brazilian Steakhouse.” I have never been to a Brazilian Steakhouse so I eagerly agree and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Driving down Westheimer extremely hungry and ready to try this new place, I see the sign for Chama Gaucha, and from the looks I could tell this was a fancy place... and probably expensive also. We walk up to the giant door (Literally a giant door) and the valet guy opens it for us, and we are immediately greeted upon and taken to our table. I haven’t lived in Houston long, but one thing I have learned is that restaurant service at a majority of places I have been to is rather disappointing. I have a pet peeve about service and I expect quality service by any restaurant. The one thing that really stuck out immediately upon arrival was the excellent service that Chama Gaucha gave. Just by seeing how all the servers act you
can tell you are going to get great service throughout your meal (And great service is what I got). I never had to even touch my chair to get into it, all the chairs where pulled out for you to sit and they politely pushed you in also. Even when I later got up to go to the restroom, I was walking back and the manager at the time went out of his way to walk to my table and get my chair for me as I sat down...I was very impressed, and surprised. Being new here, the server explained how the process worked, a simple flip of a card would tell the server if you were ready for the steak or if you were not. I didn’t know that once you were ready you would be given an oasis of steak. (And this isn’t a bad thing.) We first took advantage of the salad bar that offered a variety of choices, from pasta salad, house salad and all the toppings you could think of. I tried not to indulge too much as I was looking forward to the steak, but I couldn’t help myself and ate quite a bit, and didn’t seem to feel full.

“
I didn’t know that once you were ready you would be given an oasis of steak. (And this isn’t a bad thing.)
”
After I was done with the salad bar, I flipped my card over to the ‘ready for steak’ side and the fun began. I was almost immediately greeted with a server holding a skewer of a beautiful piece of sirloin steak. (And trust me, it tasted as good as it looked.) The server asked me, “How do you like it?” in which I reply, “Well done please.” and to my amazement he just turned the skewer around and one side was meant for well done and the other side medium-rare, and I can only assume another part was probably for rare. He began to slice into one of the juiciest steaks I have ever seen. I grabbed my tongs, grabbed the piece, and he finished cutting. I took my first bite...and I was in steak heaven. Truly the best steak I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. That piece did not last long, but that didn’t matter, and by the time I was already finishing my sirloin steak another server came with a skewer of rib-eye steak. Rib-eye is my favorite type of steak and as I was impressed with the taste of the rib-eye from Chama Gaucha, the sirloin steak was by far my favorite.
After sirloin and rib-eye, I was greeted with eating their chicken, Costela (Their beef rib, which I would say is like roast beef.), and their seasoned lamb. A never ending cycle of meat after meat, and not a single item on that menu was a disappointment. After trying each item I just wanted more and it just kept coming. If you want to know which restaurant you get the most for your money, Chama Gaucha is definitely at the top of the list. For dinner you are looking at $46.50 per person, although I went at lunch and paid around $30 per person. Relatively cheap in my opinion, especially for the quality of the food and the excellent service you are going to receive throughout your meal. Now once you add any additions such as dessert (I had the flan and would easily recommend to anyone...and I’m not a big fan of flan either.), and any drink item you may treat yourself to, it is still affordable. The side items are just as deserving of bragging rights than the entrées. Delicious mashed potatoes, bread, and a side of Chiles Toreados com-
bined with the juicy steaks give your taste palette a wonderful experience. (Beware as this is quite the spicy combination.) After all the food, I had to give in and flip my card back over so they would stop bringing the meat. Our server asked if we wanted a specialty ‘digestive’ drink, and to my curiosity I said yes. He brings the drink which was a sweet liquor to which regrettably I do not remember the name, poured it into a glass, lit it on fire, and slowly spun the liquor around the glass in a rather entertaining and artful fashion. He placed the glass in front of me, I pick it up after awhile, as it was hot, gave a gently sniff (in a gentlemen like fashion of course.) and it burned my nose with great pleasure. It smelled excellent and had a strong zing to it. In my mind I thought it was going to taste extremely strong, but to my surprise, it was very sweet and smooth to the taste. It was a good finisher to the amazing lunch we had just partook in. I am not a big fan of flan as a dessert, but we
wanted to try it. I wasn’t surprised that this was amazing as well. Overall I did not find an item I did not like, which is hard for any restaurant to accomplish. If only I could have a bigger stomach and try every item on the menu, but I will have to wait and visit again. I have finally found a place that has excellent service, incredible food, a wonderful decor, and a great atmosphere...all combined in a single sitting. Going back to Chama Gaucha is guaranteed for me, I had a wonderful first experience and they definitely impressed me on my visit. I give Chama Gaucha a solid 5 out of 5 rating and would recommend them to every single one of you (Unless you are vegetarian, but hey, they have a great salad bar!). I left Chama Gaucha extremely full, very satisfied, and with a smile on my face. My new favorite restaurant in the beautiful city of Houston, Texas. Now I only need to go out and try the other Brazilian steakhouses to compare, but they have a pretty high bar to beat...and it won’t be easy.

Mike Chabala Biography
Mike Chabala A Leading Example
M
ike Chabala was born on May 24th, 1984 in Fresno, California. His passion for soccer was undeniable as a child, but he also played basketball, baseball and golf. Life as he knew it changed when an international scout from Austria approached his parents at a soccer tournament in San Diego. At the fresh age of eight, he was recruited to attend a youth academy in Austria and made the move. While living in Europe for two years without his family, he developed the skills and hunger to drive him to the next level. Playing for youth national and club teams through high school, he positioned himself as the 17th most recruited collegiate bound soccer player in the country. Mike’s youth soccer career was powered by the determination to prove others wrong and fueled by the desire to play professionally so his grandparents and family could watch on tv. He caught the eye of The University of Washington, who was a top five team in the country, and was offered a full scholarship. After playing four seasons at The University of Washington, and serving as captain for three of them, he graduated two quarters early with a degree in Economics, and received All American Honors and Academic All American Honors. In 2006 he left the university and entered the MLS Draft. Chabala was drafted as the 44th pick overall in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft to the Houston Dynamo. He won two MLS Cup Championships in his first two seasons as a professional soccer player, and was the top assist man for the reserve team in 2006 and 2007. Finally making his first appearance in 2009, he went on to score two goals in his career and play over seventy five MLS matches in eight seasons for the Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers and DC United. He is known for his fitness, leadership and professional demeanor on the field, and his philanthropic and entrepreneurial spirit off the field. His goals of winning MLS Championships and playing for his country still breath life into his being, but building an empire and using his unparalleled experience to transition into the business world has captured his heart.

Entrepeneur Tanya Mendoza
What are the three most important things that changed your life completely? Getting married at 21 changes your life completely, new responsibilities come unexpected, but those changes make you grow into a better person. It has been 10 years of a blessed and fun journey because I got to marry my best friend. The second event that changed my life completely was when I got to carry my daughter Kaila for the first time, looking at her and thinking there is no turning back. I knew I had to be dependable for her all the time no matter what. And the third came when I had just opened Divalicious, Kaila had just turned 9, and we decided to adopt our beautiful 3 yr old Eliy. Eliy hasn’t only changed my life, she has changed everyone in the family, she brought joy and unconditional love for all of us. Is it hard to be a mom, a wife, and a business owner? I think the hardest thing for us that get to play mom, wife, and business woman is administrating our time. You don’t get to be a part-time mom or a part-time wife, you have to be there for them when they need you and it applies the same when it comes to the two businesses, as the owner, employees need to know they depend on you. Do your clients ever ask for crazy hair styles? I think our customers are really down to earth and they don’t ask for crazy looks, on the other hand we, the staff, are the ones always persuading them to get purple hair or other crazy looks. (Laughing) What is the formula for success? Dedication + Passion + Ambition = Success Is it true that successful business women are stronger than others? I don’t think it is true, it does not matter if you are a stay at home mom, an astronaut or a nurse, I think all women are strong just for the simple reason that we are capable of giving birth.
Tanya Mendoza A Young Beauty Queen
What makes you succeed every day, what is your biggest motivation? My family has always been my biggest motivation and the reason for me wanting to succeed. I have to thank my Mother and Father for always helping me reach my goals and for being the perfect role model for me. My loving husband has always been supportive of what I do and most important, he makes me believe I can do it all! And of course the two beautiful angels I get to call daughters are beyond my biggest motivation to keep moving forward.
by Lesley Vazquez
Mother of two, married, owner/ director of My First Class Learning Center for 10 years and Owner of her latest project Divalicious Party Spa. Tanya demonstrates how perseverance and hard work gives results that make her shine and succeed in the valley. 16 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 59
Did you ever think you were going to be standing where you are right now years ago? Not at all! I have always loved beauty and fashion but I never thought I would be calling it a job. When I first started Divalicious I did not even think about what I liked or did not like, I did it for my oldest daughter Kaila, she is the inspiration behind it all. But then, I started falling in love with new beauty trends, makeup shows, cosmetology school and when I less expected I was completely hooked by my new project and it was then when everything started changing.
What would you say is the trickiest part when opening and maintaining a business? I think opening a business is way easier than maintaining it. I see a lot of people get discouraged after a period of time and loose their businesses. You can call me old school but I think customer service plays the most important role in maintaining a business. I see people spending ridiculous amounts of dollars in publicity but they have horrible customer service. Customers need to feel comfortable and most important they need to trust you. What is the biggest problem to confront daily when having a business of your own? There are many challenges that face businesses whether they are large or small. These include maintaining it, hiring the right people, money management, and client dependence. The valley has no “economy” or no “target market” for a lot of businesses, do you think that is true? No… Fifty years ago, The Valley was a rural, agriculture-base economy characterized by sporadic growth. Today, the area is being transformed into a major international trade area by developing first-rate commercial, retail, office, industrial, medical, and educational facilities. If someone is going to start a business of their own what would be your advice for them? There are a lot of things that need to get done when opening a business but you need to go out and get customers, that is where the magic happens. Nothing else matters if you don’t have customers. The majority of your time and effort must focus on sales.

Guide Book Music Festival
Austin City Limits 2014 by Stephen Araiza
A weekend full of binge eating and listening to great music in the beautiful Zilker Park of Austin, Texas.
18 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 59
Equipped with a bottle of water, extremely comfortable shoes (So glad I chose those shoes), and a sombrero (thank you for the compliments everyone!) I was ready to embark on my adventure to one of the greatest music festivals in the world... Austin City Limits. I must admit when I first entered the festival, I completely ignored the starter bands on day one and headed straight for Austin Eats...and if you don’t know what this is...then shame on you. Three days of awesome Austin food is what we all dream of, and that dream is a reality during ACL. Day one was a slow day for myself, I was not familiar with most of the bands, but was very excited for a couple of them such as Foster the People and Outkast. I was in complete awe with Foster the People, such a great performance with a crowd full of energy. I could have stood there all night listening to them play, but sadly it only lasted an hour. Before their performance I took a peek at Paolo Nutini’s set, and it was the greatest discovery for me that entire weekend. Paolo sings with such heart and emotion that you feel his songs move through you. Song after song he kept impressing me, and the Charlie Chaplin speech in his song ‘Iron Sky’ completely gave me goosebumps....totally blown away.
After hearing two great artists, it was that time again to hit up Austin Eats, where I had my first taste of Fun Punch from Juiceland (the first out of probably 10 during the whole weekend...yes, I loved it.), a ridiculously great tasting brisket sandwich from The Salt Lick (had a few of these also.), and a pepperoni slice from Southside Flying Pizza (my diet did not exist this weekend.), which I came to love all of these items. The final show of day one was Outkast which I enjoyed. I will be honest that I really just wanted to hear ‘Hey Ya’ as most people did since after that song the crowd dispersed rather suddenly. Day two was a bit more filled with music....and food. I was a bit worried the whole day was going to be canceled due to rain, but thankfully it was not, just the first six morning shows were. I first came upon the performance of Zoé and they did not disappoint, a great show overall. Running between Interpol, Icona Pop, and Iggy Azalea (who’s attempt at rapping was rather annoying and humorous to me), it was finally time for Lana Del Rey...and what a great show she gave everyone. I made the foolish mistake of waiting last minute to go and get a good spot during
Music Festival
Guide Book
(From left to right, clockwise) Zoé, Foster the People, Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey, but after squeezing in between the hundreds of people, I got a decent spot. With a short girl behind me who politely told me to take off my awesome sombrero because she couldn’t see, a guy packing a joint to my right, a giant guy in front of me who I kept having to lean to the side to see, and a woman who passed out to my left....I would say my spot was rather entertaining in itself.. Lana Del Rey started great and ending
hundreds (possibly thousands?) had already claimed their spots. I didn’t want to be in the crowd at this point, with such a chill and relaxed sound from Broken Bells, that’s exactly what I wanted to do.....chill and relax. I stood and sat (sometimes laid down even) in the back and it was perfect. If you haven’t heard Broken Bell’s music, I highly recommend it. They transmit such great vibes, the performance was a great experience for me and one of my top shows of the entire weekend. I could have left after that show and been completely satisfied. But I stuck around for Eminem, who fulfilled all my expectations, and Skrillex, who didn’t impress me that much as I have seen him before and not much had changed. (Although him blasting the Star Wars theme through the speakers made it absolutely worth it.)
“I was ready to embark on my adventure to one of the

great. Constantly keeping the show going, taking selfies with the front crowd and letting one guy kiss her on the cheek, she gave us all a performance to remember. She has a voice that is so unique and breathtaking that each song was pure gold. After all the shows and running around, I began to stuff my face again with endless food. This time I chose kettle corn, more fun punch (the only healthy thing I got), and the tasty brisket nachos from The Salt Lick. After getting some of my energy back and my feet starting to hurt, I was ready to go see a band I had been looking forward to since the lineup was released...Broken Bells. I headed over to the Miller Lite stage in which
Eminem flowed into each one of his songs so naturally it was impressive. He sang all the songs I wanted to hear and remembering hearing him for the first time back in 1996, just witnessing him live after all the years of hearing him, it was definitely a show to remember and cherish. Eminem gave a great ending to day two and was an appropriate choice to end the day for all of us who got to attend and witness his spectacular show. I would say
day two was the best of the three day event for me. I was not that excited for day three as I didn’t know a majority of the bands that played during the day, or I knew them and I was not a big fan of their music. The main performance I was looking forward to was Phantogram and that was a show that I enjoyed a lot from start to finish. I took the opportunity to be a good Samaritan to mother nature on day three and participated in the recycle contest to win a free bike...and a free shirt! (The free shirt made me do it...shh.) Unfortunately I did not win the free bike, but I did get the shirt, and most of all the karma points, and a good feeling inside. With helping the environment and hearing Phantogram while doing so, I had no regrets about it and I was glad to give a lending hand to the festival. After my good deeds I headed over to see Lorde... and I was disappointed. The songs themselves sounded great, but her performance was boring. It seemed the only thing she did was walk around and flip her hair a lot...I was not impressed and was just waiting for it all to be over even though I like her music. The only performance that really let me down that weekend. After three days of music, food and hurting feet that felt like were going to explode, I had another great time at Austin City Limits. If you are a music lover and enjoy huge festivals, then this is the place for you.

Begin the Movement Today Communicate In the day of technology, we hardly look up from our phones and notice the things around us. It’s time to take a break from technology, talk to your fellow neighbors, peers, and friends. See who needs help, how you can help, and go out and help those in need.
Spread the Word Help your neighbor and tell them to help someone else. By continuing this chain of paying it forward, you can help the world become a better place. Bring back the values that we lost by spreading the word to the masses.
PAY IT FORWARD Make A Change
For too long, man has been cruel to one another. We believe it’s time to begin the movement and start to spread kindness and happiness. The more people we can get involved the greater success we will have in spreading these acts of kindness amongst the greater population. It is important to take care of each other and show that there is still hope in mankind. For generations we have grown as a society and keeping our kindness and integrity alive is essential in continuing the growth of the world. Learn today how you can pay it forward and be part of this great movement!

Laurisa Jane Serra Not Your Typical Teenager by Roger Davila
What is the definition of a stereotypical teenager these days? Weird hair? Loud Music? Rebelliousness? These are the characteristics that we, as a society, associate with teenagers. Is that a fair assumption? Are most teenagers that way? No, in fact, there are multiple teenagers that are doing things as they should do in order to prepare for their future in the real world. Some teenagers have extra obstacles and pressures that most do not. I am not talking about inner city kids that have life stacked against them from the start. I am also not talking about the ritzy kids of wealthy parents that take everything for granted. I am talking about the upper middle class teenager that has the undue pressures of being the children of either political or successful community leaders. The pressures that these teens face sometimes is so hard that it causes teenagers to lash out and rebel against the very laws that their parents are trying to enforce. Some make it, some don’t. Then there are those teenagers that excel more in those situations. Laurisa Jane Serra fits that description. Laurisa Jane Serra is the daughter of a very prominent attorney and presiding Judge of County Court at Law #2, Laura Betancourt. She not only has to keep doing “The Right Thing” but also has to exceed her own expectations and those of her over-achieving mother. Undue pressure at its best, not only does Laurisa have to deal with the pressures of being the daughter of a local judge, she has to deal with pressures of being a teenager in this modern age, along with being a 3 time winner of several beauty pageants, which include, 2015 Miss Texas Jr. High America, 2014 Jr. Miss Cameron County, (American Beauty), and also 2014 Jr. Miss Southern States (American Beauty). Topping it all off, she is an honor student

at IDEA Brownsville College Prep School. Whew, that tired me out just writing about it. In most cases, that is a recipe for disaster among teenagers, not for Laurisa, it is more of a challenge. One can only imagine what she does to cope with all that is surrounding her. When I asked, “ How do you deal with being the daughter of a judge and still remain focused on what you need to do?” She turned her head slightly, gave me a beautiful smile and simply said. “I don’t know?” Typical teenage answer. The innocence in that response only conveyed what was already obvious. Laurisa is a modest young woman. She cares about her family, friends and of course everyone else around her. Upon interviewing this young woman, I noticed a sense of accomplishment and determination in her voice. I also felt that whatever she sets her sights on she would accomplish. Which lead me to my next question. When I asked her what she wanted to be when she finally finished school and grew up she quickly said, “An attorney like my mom.” I asked her why and she said, “Cuz , they hardly ever work!” A statement that caused her mother to turn and frown as soon
Integrity, Strength, and of course, Family.

as she heard it. I laughed when I saw mom’s expression. Then Laurisa gave her mom that tilted smile and it just cleared the air. Laurisa has that aura that most people notice right away. She can light up a room by just walking in. Hence the pageants that she has won. She was awarded the Miss Texas Jr. High this past December because of her dedication and success to the pageants and has only been competing for a year, definitely a big accomplishment for this young lady. A huge part of her success also comes from the fact that she does Community work in both Cameron and Hidalgo Counties. As I said before, she sets her sights on something and goes after it whole-heartedly. How many teenagers in this day and age help our community in that manner? As much as I would like to continue to brag about Laurisa and all of her accomplishments it is difficult not to mention where she acquired those traits. After spending some time with their mother, I quickly had an answer to that question. The Judge. The support she has from her mother is unbelievable. Judge Laura Betancourt not only juggles a packed courtroom during the day she also juggles the numerous after school activities that her daughters are involved in. Whether it is golf, soccer, volleyball, basketball practices or even girl scouts her mom is there to take them wherever they need to go. Both of them.
Which leads me to my next segment, Laurisa is a twin. Yes, that’s right she has a twin sister named Lauren.
”
Lauren is not so different than her sister, although she attends Stillman Middle School, and on the Honor Roll as well. Equally as beautiful, Lauren chose not to do the pageant scene, she is equally as active in sports, the only difference being is that she is more the student athlete of the family. She loves sports, especially golf. Although her sister indulges in sports as well it is the clear choice for Lauren. She loves to be on the course swinging that club, spiking the volleyball or kicking a soccer ball. The one thing that the girls really have a passion for is Photography. Both sisters and their friends really enjoy taking pictures. With the same confidence and aura as the other women in her family, Lauren also lights up a room with just a smile and a twinkle in her eye that people cannot ignore. These two sisters obviously have inherited these traits from their mother whose presence also displays confidence and self-assurance. These three women will one day be a force to be reckoned with in Cameron County. Judge Laura Betancourt is paving the way for her daughters to one day be as accomplished as she already is. Having had a very successful career as an attorney and now a County Court at Law Judge she displays what her daughters one day hope and pray they will also have.

Q & A Annise Parker
Annise
Parker Mayor of Houston by Stephen Araiza
What does the city of Houston mean to you? Houston is home. It is where I was born and where I have lived most of my life. I love this city and I love my job. What goals do you hope to accomplish by the end of this term? I want to leave Houston in a better position than it was six years ago when I became mayor. During my tenure, we have put in place a more stable financial structure, we are rebuilding our streets and drainage infrastructure, linking our bayous with linear parks, adding hike and bike trails, holding the line on crime, solidifying our reputation as a green city and housing the homeless. What has been your greatest obstacle so far while being in office? I like to move fast and sometimes that pace and the bureaucracy of government collide. We have been able to work through it though and accomplish much more than other previous administrations. Time is also an obstacle. Our current term limits allow those elected to city office to serve no more than six years. This is what fuels my fast pace. There is so much to get done and I always hear the clock ticking. How far do you want to take your political career, do you see yourself running for governor one day? I definitely want to pursue other public service opportunities. However, given the current election cycle and politics of Texas, there will not be anything available for me to pursue at the time my term as mayor will end. That means I will need to find something else to do until that next opportunity presents itself. At this point, I have not decided what that something else will be.
32 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 59
You have been given a lot of criticism recently, what motivates you to look past it and move forward? I know that what we are doing is right for Houston and its residents. I also know that the criticism is not reflective of what the majority of this great city believes. We are a tolerant, diverse and accepting city – a city that doesn’t care where you came from or whom you choose to love. We care about what you have to offer and want everyone to have the same access to full participation in civic and business life.
“
There is so much to get done and I always hear the clock ticking.
”
Most people would consider equal rights a great thing, why do you think so many in the religious community are against an ordinance (referring to HERO) that supports equal rights? I disagree with the premise of the question. We had great support from the religious community. The small minority of the religious community that has been the most vocal in opposition to the HERO is not reflective of the majority. You got married early this year in California, do you see Texas legalizing same-sex marriage in the near future, and are you doing anything personally to push it? I believe that same-sex marriage will be legal in Texas soon. This postion is supported by numerous recent court decisions and legalization of the
freedom to marry in numerous other states. As for what I am doing personally, I am a co-chair of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, an effort launched at the U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting in January of 2012. We started with about 80 Mayors. As of now, almost 500 Mayors from 45 states and the District of Columbia have joined the program. This group utilizes various means to promote the issue, including social media and the news media. Aside from same-sex marriage, you recently made comments regarding current drug laws, how would you change them if given the opportunity? I am on record in support of the legalization of marijuana. However, this is an issue that will be decided at the state level rather than locally. Do you think the legalization of marijuana would have a positive or negative effect in the State of Texas? I believe we could see a reduction in the wide range of criminal activity that occurs as a result of the illegal distribution of marijuana. There could also be a revenue impact from the taxes that would most certainly be applied to legalization. What improvements do you feel need to happen in Houston? We need to ensure better educational outcomes for our kids. We need to create a clear path from high school to the thousands of jobs in industry and, for the city, we must address pension reform. My administration has been working on these but real long-term solutions will have to come from other governmental entities. I will work on pension reform, as I have for two sessions, when the legislature convenes next January.

It’s a nice afternoon and your are driving down 10th street in McAllen, Texas and you are wondering what you are going to eat. Your stomach is growling so it has to be something quick, fast and in a hurry. All of a sudden you see them with their bright colored, chrome plated glory, THE FOOD TRUCKS. Yes, you have found what your stomach has been craving. You stop and notice the number of cars and people that are surrounding your favorite mobile hot dog stand, KRAZY DOGS. These plump, juicy, mouth watering hot dogs are what your mouth has been aching for all day long. Finally it’s your turn in line and the gentleman looks down upon you as does a God look down on the Earth and asks “What would you like?” I calmly walk up with the biggest smile on my face and order a Pizza Dog, a true nectar of the Gods. All of this would not be happening if it were not for Mcallen lifting the ban on food trucks. Now the food truck industry is suddenly booming in the mcallen area with more and more food trucks popping up everywhere. The influx of these trucks and the popularity they are gaining is in fact a slower process than most larger metropolitan cities. Austin, Texas which in my eyes is the capital of food trucks, boasts trucks that have everything from burgers, hot dogs, pizza, philly cheese steaks and countless other fast food greatness. One of those trucks in Austin is Torchy’s Tacos...an incredible tiny food truck that produces more than 200 tacos daily. The customers are lined up bright and early waiting for their Torchy’s Taco with their homemade salsa. The popularity is growing more and more in the RGV as well, with numerous food trucks popping up here and there. Although we still do not have the massive army of food trucks that most larger cities have, we will
soon catch up, seeing that the RGV and their residents surely do love their food. We asked several people that were eating a Krazy Dog why they chose a food truck as their dinner for the evening. This is what they had to say...“I love the fact that it is fast, hot and good.” says Henry Mata, a McAllen resident. “They are just sooooo gooood!” says Myra Puente, a legal secretary that drives at least 15 minutes in the opposite direction once a week just to eat at the popular food truck, Nino’s Rio Pizza, but wishes there was more of a variety to choose from. The food truck industry is beginning to boom in the RGV and Myra just might get her wish. I foresee an influx of trucks up and down tenth street coming pretty soon. A site that many McAllen residents would love to see.
As I write this article Cameron County still has not yet approved the ordinance granting permission for food trucks, but I hope and pray that one day soon we will see those shiny chrome plated beasts rolling down our streets. We can literally close our eyes and see the smoke barrelling out of the chimney tops, take a deep breath and smell the wonderful aroma of those beautiful meals being prepared as customers line up to receive their pleasures. Ahh yes, one day soon.

The Way To Impress by Laguna Makeup Photography | John Medina Model | Ximena Bolaños
It’s that time of year again! The time for hot apple cider with peppermint candy by the fire and yummy gingerbread men with gum drop buttons fresh out of the oven. The holidays are in lieu and Christmas and New Years are the perfect holidays to add a little extra glitz and glam to your outfit, hair and makeup! Who really needs a reason to feel extra fabulous? The holiday season is the perfect time to pull out all the stops and put your best face forward!!
Eyes With the beautiful and exotic Ximena, I started by applying a darkened matte beige/ brown shadow to her crease with a fluffy blending brush. I blended the shadow back and forth until it diffused smoothly into her crease. Then I applied a shimmery champagne pigment to her mobile lid using a small shader brush. On top of the champagne colored pigment, I applied a coppery bronze shadow with an electric metallic finish. After this, using a clean blending brush I applied a medium dark bronze with a gilded sheen shadow to her outer corner and I began blending this shadow back and forth. After that I applied a gel eyeliner to her top lash line and created a small wing. I topped her look off with a flirty pair of lashes, immediately following with highlighting her inner corner with the same champagne pigment and coppery bronze shadow previously used. To give the look more depth and drama I applied a smokey black eyeliner to her water line and black mascara on her lower lash line.
Face For Ximena’s face, I applied a face primer according to her personal skin type, foundation based on her skin tone, making sure to pay attention to her undertones, highlighting concealer, contour powder to add dimension to her face and blush to bring back her natural glow.
Lips

Exfoliating your lips allows for a smoother application of matte lipstick. My favorite exfoliator to use is a mixture of sugar and honey. After exfoliating Ximena’s lips, I generously applied a lip balm to add moisture for a soft and subtle pout. I lined her lips with a hot red lipliner and then applied a matte red lipstick. Red lips are a little tricky to perfect, so I like to sharpen the edges with a flat concealer brush with a dab of skin tone concealer to give the lips a nice, crisp edge. Your holiday look is now complete! Have fun recreating this beautiful look for the perfect holiday party!

Winter Has Arrived by Arlour.com

With the warm weather behind us, now we can walk out the door in winter fashion.
an you believe the Holiday Season is here AGAIN?! We’re reminded “Tis the Season to be Jolly” as we see houses decorated with colorful lights and crystallized snowflakes falling and creating snowcapped limbs. Aside from the normal Holiday festivities, Holiday fashionistas are shopping till they drop for the perfect pieces to wear for all of the fashionable holiday parties! Are you going to be a part of the Holiday hustle and the shoppers’ madness for the hottest designer threads for the season? With all of the different events and party invites that you’ve received, what are you going to wear? This season is all about glitz, glamour and luxury! You want to make sure that you step out in style wherever you go, so read on to learn how. For your Holiday party wear, look for outfits that are unique and interesting, which show that you’re a fashionable girl who is definitely in the spirit of giving and celebrating! You can take advantage of the cooler weather and create so many beautiful looks with the incorporation of different textured materials like lace, brocade, silk, satin, velvet, and velour. Designers are blending different fabrics on their pieces, adding dimension and giving you a polished, sophisticated look. For example, you might find a strapless little black dress with lace overlay and fur trimming the neckline, or maybe an elegant jumpsuit that looks like lace but is actually a textured hand painted design! One of the hottest trends for the season, that is always appropriate this time of year, is “Head to toe sparkle.” How can you go wrong with a little sparkle and shine during the Holidays? Formal events are the perfect time for you to pull out all the stops, where you can dress to impress and toast to the New Year with yummy drinks or your favorite aged wine. You can go all out and glam up your outfit with sequins, exquisite beading or colorful jewels. If you want to make a statement for a swanky New Year’s Eve party, indulge in a cocktail dress adorned with all sequins, then incorporate shoes that are two textured like a pump that has a satin body accented with just a few jewels. Let your shoes complement, not distract, from the color and style of your dress and carry a small clutch for the evening. When in doubt, metallic colors like gold, silver, or bronze correlate well with many colors. Fur remains one of the season’s popular trends and is definitely something that says, “Holiday festivities, here I come!” There are so many ways to incorporate fur into your Holiday wardrobe this year. Over the top of your beautiful formal gown you can always wear a fur coat to keep your shoulders and arms warm in icy temperatures. If

it’s not cold enough for a huge fur coat, but you still want to add a little warmth around your neck and shoulders, throw on a fur shawl or scarf, or consider a vintage fur wrap or stole and top off with a fur hand muff to channel the era of Old Hollywood Glamour! Fur trimmings on sweaters, coats, hats, and leather gloves, are always great additions to the perfect holiday outfit, giving you extra warmth for frigid temperatures and top off your ensemble with a festive yet chic winter look . Even if you’re not a big wearer of fur on the body, fur handbags are accessories that add a soft touch of luxury and a lot of glam!
Jewelry and accessories can make or break any outfit, so be mindful that you don’t OVER accessorize! If you’re wearing a simple, yet chic solid colored dress, you can make it pop with a statement necklace, a pair of stud earrings, and simple clutch. The most important thing is to decide which piece will be the focal point that draws attention, whether it be a pair of jeweled pumps, large dangling earrings with Swarovski crystals, or a statement necklace with brightly colored stones. For instance, if you’re wearing a strapless formal gown embellished with sequins and jewels, don’t overdo it with a chunky necklace and matching earrings, as these will be a distraction from the artistry the designer incorporated into your stunning dress. The point is, your look shouldn’t be so overwhelming that onlookers will be distracted by what to look at first and miss out on your fashion sense and personality that tops off your beauty! Holidays are near and your Holiday outfits are waiting to be created! So while you’re prepping that Holiday turkey, reviewing your calendar of events, and hanging party decorations to bring in the New Year, remember the style you create today will make a lasting impression tomorrow! So let’s be fashionably chic this Holiday Season and raise our wine glasses to toast to celebrating in great style!
