A SMILING PATIENT

“People

never forget how you make them feel, so my patients’ happiness is my success.

is the Definition of Success

• Roger Davila

Vanesa Guerra Clements, DDS Legacy Dental | Brownsville, TX

What led you to become a dentist? My family. I have several family members in the medical field, but my father was the one who had the biggest impact. I admired his commitment to his patients and his passion to go the extra mile to help those in need. He would tell me a quote he was fond of, that people will forget what you said, and people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. Thus, at Legacy Dental, my whole staff goes out of their way to ensure that all of our patients leave with a smile on their face! What is the one thing you would change about the dental industry if you could? Dentistry is in a great place right now; technological advances have allowed us the ability to diagnose more accurately and provide superior dental care to our patients. Nevertheless, the old stereotype of the grouchy dentist with the giant, rusty-sounding drill still persists. That fear prevents so many people from going to the dentist or causes them to delay much needed treatment. But those technological advancements that help diagnosis have also made a trip to the dentist so much easier and much more comfortable for our patients. Perhaps equally important is the role of the dentist and her staff to show the patient that there’s nothing to fear. We typically fear what we don’t understand, so educating the patient goes a long way towards a successful dental visit and helps with future visits as well. What is the most common mistake people make concerning their teeth? It’s really the basics: brushing and flossing. Are you brushing two minutes twice a day? Are you brushing in circles? Are you brushing your gums, tongue and palate? And then there’s flossing. Recent studies

10 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 58

show that only half of all Americans floss on a daily basis. An extra two-three minutes a day to floss would do wonders for one’s overall oral hygiene. What is the number one method or product you recommend in teeth whitening? There are several great products out there right now, but Phillips ZOOM Whitening is pretty amazing. We’ve seen patients come in who were so self-conscious about their teeth that they wouldn’t smile. One woman showed us photo after photo of various events throughout her life – birthdays, quinceañeras, weddings – and no smile. After a one-hour session with ZOOM, this patient was almost transformed; her once yellow-ish teeth were now pearly white. But while the physical change in her teeth color was impressive, it was the tears of joy and that really had an impact on our staff. This was a life-changing event. Now her whole demeanor and how she carries herself is significantly different – she’s much more confident and self-assured. That type of change is priceless!

Finally tell us about your path to success, what are your future goals and dreams? Success can be measured in so many ways, but at the end of the day, I want to make people smile – maybe because they appreciate the dentistry they’ve received or appreciate the care and attention they’ve received from my team. But it’s the human element that drives me. People never forget how you make them feel, so my patients’ happiness is my success. As for the future, I hope to create more smiles by providing excellent care to my amazing patients. In addition, I’d like to mentor others who want a career in dentistry. I’ve had some wonderful teachers, mentors and coaches over the years and would relish the opportunity to give back just like others did for me.

Fashion | Enid Almanza

ENID ALMANZA - by Roberto Avalos -

- Photography by Phillip Meeks -

How would you describe yourself as a person? Enid: I’d rather not. How do you define your work and how do you think your work contributes to society? Enid: Well I wouldn’t have a special way to define it, however, right at this very moment, I would say that my work is a coalition between, the innocence of fantasy and the cruelty of reality. I’ve always seen myself, not only as fashion designer, but as an artist in general. I’m not sure if my work contributes to society, or not. I think that depends on each individual that gets the chance to experience the work, what I mean by this is that, as an artist one can only create and it depends on whomever sees the work and decides whether it moves them or makes them feel something, if it inspires them. Then If you get to inspire at least one person to follow their creative path, or follow their dreams, then that means you’re doing a good job, that you’re making a difference. I honestly don’t know if I’m at that level yet, but if I ever get the chance to inspire someone, then it’s all worth it. Did you picture yourself in this industry as a child? If not, what did you want to be? Enid: Oh no, not at all, I always had the intuition and curiosity to be a part of it, but always tried to sort of hide it, it wasn’t until I graduated from High School, that I was brave enough to jump on it. I think this is an industry that you need to analyze and see the goods and bads first and then you can decide whether you want to jump on it or not. I’ve been lucky enough to have my work being embraced by both industries, the art Industry and the fashion industry, and it’s still kind of surprising to me, because at the beginning it wasn’t easy, it was actually fucking hard to even get people to notice me. Especially because the industry was in a complete different moment when I started, and seeing how much it has changed and seeing how young creative minds are being appreciated and supported now, it’s a good sign. Unfortunately when you’re young, and you’re fighting to live your dreams, no one takes you seriously because you’re immature and probably don’t know even know what you want, “you’re

14 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 58

dreaming too big’’ Then when you’re older, “You’re to old to be pursuing those fantasies,” Screw that, if you want it, if you love it, then go get it! Who gives a crap about age.

people talk about it, whether it’s good criticism or bad criticism, whether they like it or not, whether they understand it or not, the important thing is that they still talk about it. That’s what counts.

But back to the second question, I majored in Computer Engineering in college, I liked it, and I was actually good at it, but it just didn’t feel right, so one day I just decided to go for what felt right, which was to make clothes, to make glasses, to make art.

What do you believe are the best three qualities to have in order for success?

What motivates you the most?

Enid: Well, I’m actually moving to Milan, in a couple of weeks, probably once this publication is out, I will be there already. I’ve been awarded with a 70% scholarship to study fashion design and visual merchandising, the scholarship is being provided by Vogue Talents and the Academy where I will be studying. Also I have a film coming up, there’s so many things that I’d rather not talk about at the moment, but you will find out when it’s time.

Enid: To be able to wake up every morning and realize that I get to do what I love the most in this world. To know how valuable it is to have creative freedom and not fall into any pressure from anybody. To be successful in my field, and by being successful I mean actually to grow as an artist and creator day by day, not to be “famous” I think that there is this huge misconception in between these two terms.

Enid: Hard work, dedication and honesty. Tell us about your future projects?

What does Houston mean to you? One should never target fame as an ultimate goal, one should always target personal growth, professional improvement, and always stay true to your essence, one should target to become a harder worker, more dedicated, and responsible. Then things like fame and all that, that comes after.

Enid: It means progress, it means evolution, it means inspiration. It meant everything to me for the last 8 years. I mean, being a kid in high school and wishing I could be a good artist someday and 3 years later my premiere show was named #1 Art show in the state of Texas. It means hope.

To wake up and know that I get one more day to work on a new pair of glasses or a new dress. To see my family and the people I love, do well and being successful on what they do, there’s no bigger motivation for me than that.

I hope Houston keeps growing and I hope that the support for creative people can grow as well; I hope it’s easier for future generations to live their dreams. We have so much potential as a city, all that we need is to be united, to not be judgmental and to support each other.

“I would say that my work is a coalition between, the innocence of fantasy and the cruelty of reality.”

What advice can you give to young people who want to start a career in the fashion industry?

How do you feel about the criticism that is directed towards your work? Enid: I think it’s fun. I think as specific as my work is, it can always attract some sort of criticism and that’s good, I mean the important thing is that

Enid: “To not listen,’’ to ignore any kind of bad criticism or negativity towards your dreams. This is your life! You decide how to live it, If someone doesn’t understand what you do, that’s okay, but it doesn’t mean that it is bad or that it is wrong. There is NOTHING wrong with you. If you love it, if it brings you joy and motivation and if you’re not hurting anybody, then go ahead and make it happen. You don’t need approval from anybody. You’re in charge. Enjoy you’re individuality, enjoy how unique you are, be proud of your visions and work hard to make them become a reality.

SPACE

Brownsville’s New Frontier • Roger Davila

A

s children some of us grew up with Star Trek others with Star Wars but did any of us truly believe that one day space travel would be possible? Of course we did, that is why we continued to watch. Those dreams will soon become a reality. A company called Space X has just acquired the contract to build a facility in Brownsville, Texas. Yes, that’s right. Brownsville will soon be a city that houses one of 4 facilities designed to launch rockets into space. How exciting is that? Although there are mixed feelings about us becoming one of those cities I believe that it would be great for the economy of Brownsville to have Space X come to our city. Why do I believe that? Well for starters, we will finally be on the map for something other than drug cartels and violence. We will be a part of something spectacular. Space X is a company that designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecrafts. The company was founded by Elon Musk, also the founder of Paypal, in 2002. Space X’s main goal is to revolutionize space technology with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets. As we see technology advance more and more each and everyday, people are beginning to believe that actual space travel is something that will happen sooner than later. We as a society have come to the realization that with the growing population our vast re-

20 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 58

sources will soon be used at an alarming rate. So one of the alternatives we will have in the future will be to have people living on other planets. That is one solution. Space X is a company that will eventually make that happen with the research and technology that they do. This company spends billions of dollars each and every year in research and development of the types of rockets that will eventually carry not only objects but people into space. Although, Space X is opening a facility here in Brownsville, of course there is still the opposition of people that do not believe that Space X

The influx of jobs that this will create is enormous for our city. Jobs, housing, shopping and recreational activities will grow out of control due to the people that will come here to work. There are companies that are already getting ready for the Space Giant to come in. Walmart has increased their building of stores, apartment complexes are being built at an alarming rate, restaurants being built and shopping centers popping up on every street corner. Is Brownsville ready? If not, we better start getting ready, because they are coming soon.

“This company spends billions of dollars each and every year in research and development of the types of rockets that will eventually carry not only objects but people into space.” is a good idea for our city. I asked ten people if they were in favor of Space X in Brownsville. Out of the ten people, eight said it was a great idea and a wonderful boost to our struggling economy. Two said it would be terrible for the environment. I believe, and this is my own personal observation, that Space X not only will boost our economy but at the same time make sure that whatever facilities they open here will be environmentally safe. I feel that they will take whatever precautions they have to in order to insure that our city not only thrives financially but environmentally as well.

Education in this area will also get a boost, our citizens will want to further their education in order to get a great career with a great company. So do I feel that Space X will help the people of Brownsville, of course they will. There is evidence of it already at every location they have built facilities. Space X will soon be here. Space travel also will soon be here, are we ready for it?

all is officially here! Our Summer makeup trends were bold and full of vibrant shades! Now that the weather has gotten a little cooler and the leaves have begun to fall from the trees, sultry, smokey, and ultra vampy looks are definitely in! Here are 8 easy steps to follow, on how to achieve the perfect daytime eye. Plus an added bonus on how to easily transform this look into something smoking hot for nighttime!

Step 1

Blend, blend, blend! This step is the most important step as this will allow all of your colors to appear as if they have easily faded into one another.

Step 2

Apply a thin layer of your favorite black eyeliner on top of your lashline and follow up with either some fun and flirty lashes or lots of coats of mascara.

Apply a matte soft brown eyeshadow to your crease with a fluffy blending brush and blend seamlessly, making sure to soften the edges. Step 3

Apply a light beige eyeshadow with a satin finish to your mobile lid with a densely packed shader brush. Apply more as needed until you achieve the desired intensity Step 4

Go back into the crease with the same fluffy brush previously used to apply the soft brown. On top of this color, apply a matte mocha colored eyeshadow and blend this color into the soft brown. Remember the more you blend, the more the colors will begin to mesh together. Step 5

Photography by: Alberto Porras

24 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 58

Step 6

After you’ve sculpted your eyebrows to your liking, prime your lids with your favorite eyeshadow primer. Priming your lids will ensure the longevity and will enhance the color pay off of the eyeshadow color.

Apply a shimmery champagne eyeshadow color underneath the brow to give a nice highlight. Blend this color down into the matte soft brown. Feel free to go back and apply more of any of the eyeshadows if you want more intensity.

Step 7

Step 8

Apply your face primer, foundation, blush, contour powder, and a brown lipstick with a pink undertone for a fall fabulous pout! Your daytime smokey eye is complete! Bonus

To transform this look from day to night, deepen your crease with a matte espresso brown eyeshadow using the same fluffy brush and blend into the soft and mocha brown shades previously applied. Smoke out your lower lashline, by applying the espresso brown with a small pencil brush and use light back and forth strokes to blend this out. Line your lips with a deep purple lipliner and then apply a vampy purple lipstick. Remember everybody has a different complexion, eye shape, and skin type. Cater your look to what is best for you!

#FallFashions2014 - Fashions, Photography & Article by Arlour.com Make Up by Nolvia Laguna | Model - Zoe Wallace

re you ready for the fabulous Fall fashions 2014? Ready or not, here it comes! Fashion designers have excavated brilliant designer collections and have sent their models down the runway in the absolute best for this upcoming season! The fashion collections for the new season featuring women’s designer clothing are absolutely phenomenal! I know you’re wondering what new trends and colors are going to be hot and “in”. Get ready; we’ve got the scoop on the latest Fall trends, colors, and more!

30 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 58

Trends for Fall Fashion 2014 are all across the board. This season introduces some repeat trends from the Fall 2013 trend report, a trend from a past era, a twist on some popular trends that are usually worn around the holiday season and many more. So get your pen and pad to take some notes! The Top 10 trends for Fall begin with the Sweet Sixties, with bold graphic prints, patent leather, miniskirts, and trapeze dresses. Louis Vuitton,

Gucci, and Saint Laurent are some of the designers that included these designs. Next, we have the trend of Oversized everything: pants, sweaters, tops, jeans, you name it! Who doesn’t love wearing an oversized article of clothing and experiencing pure comfort? Now you can be fashionably comfortable and warm all at the same time! Get ready to channel Hugh Hefner because Robe Coats are going to be popular this season. Take your best robe to the streets with knee high designer boots and cinch in your waist with a

wide belt. Piggy backing on the Oversized clothing trend, pair your designer Knits with these chunky sweaters for a trend on trend look. Sweaters are coming off of the shoulders onto the legs and are in the form of thick tights or pants. Designers Marc Jacobs and Celine have incorporated this into their collections. Designer Albar Elbaz designs to the confinement of women’s outerwear by introducing Straight Jackets and making them fashionable, chic and modern. Get ready to be constricted to style! Tommy Hilfiger and Burberry have designed to Norse Code, which is the trend that is referred to fair isle printed sweaters, jackets, and hats that are trimmed in various furs and shearling. This trend has an almost Indian and bohemian mix with the use of leather and suede. Are you ready for the Apocalypse? This Fall season designers Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, and Chanel are designing for tough urban girl with a brash sense of style that’s brawling through the streets. She’s ready for anything!

Another print seen on the runways for the Fall 2014 trends is something you might think is a comeback, but is actually a traditional print. Get ready to be mad for plaid this Fall! Look for it in various colors, sizes, and fabrics. Don’t be afraid to mix it with other prints in coordinating colors for a new twist and get ready to be complimented for your creativity!

close proximity, by keeping their vibrancy factor. Get ready to see royal blue, cobalt(a bright blue), aluminum(the color of conventional metal), cypress(a dark green), aurora red(a slightly deep red), sea fog(a light shade of grey with a purple undertone), misted yellow(a muted yellow), cognac(;a smooth brown), and sangria(a deep purple) are the 9 colors being used throughout the designers collections this season. Fall 2014 is around the corner and with your notes in hand, indulge in the fabulous fashions that are trending this season. You’ve yet to be the trendiest girl in town! The color palette for Fall 2014 is surprisingly vibrant, but we’ll let you be the judge. With Radiant Orchid being the color of the year, some of these colors are coming in

get snuggly with Astrakhan, as the use of fur takes over with influences from wild exotic animals and brilliant pops of color. A gold digger you will be this Fall 2014 with designers such as Prada, Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana, and Rodarte designing to the trend Gold Mine, where the color metallic gold took the spotlight on the runways. I know you were wondering how to transition your favorite dresses into Fall, but no worries. Celine, Balenciago, Kenzo, and Giorgio Armani have made it ok to wear your pants under your dresses with the Dresses over Pants trend.

Rachel White

Miss Texas United States 2014 Photography By: Grant Photo Styling By: Kim Dunn

Miss Texas United States 2014 is Rachel White who is 23 years old and Houstonian born and raised. The only child of Elizabeth and John White, Rachel graduated from St. Agnes Academy high school in 2009, from there she attended Texas Christian University for her freshman year of college to get acquainted with the idea of moving away from home. After her freshman year she transferred to Marymount Manhattan College, in Manhattan, New York City. While living in New York City Rachel worked as a Fashion Public Relations intern for Theory, Helmut Lang, Theysken’s Theory, and Taylor Dress. She also worked for the newly elected mayor of New York, Bill deBlasio, as a press intern, devoting her interests to community and political journalism. It was in New York City, Rachel took a leap of faith and curiosity, to compete in her first pageant and took on Miss New York USA 2013, placing top 10 out of over 120 contestants from all over the state of New York. Being the new comer on the pageant scene, Rachel landed a multitude of modeling opportunities throughout New York City and requested appearances along with a multitude of friendships she still holds dear to her heart – all fueling her passion for competing in pageants. While living in New York City, Rachel took up a job to help pay for the higher cost of living at an Upper East Side restaurant, which fueled her passion to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. She graduated with her Bachelor’s in Communication Arts with a concentration in Critical Media and a minor in Journalism in May of 2013. Since graduation, Rachel moved back to Houston, Texas where she currently works at the Houston Methodist Research Institute

38 Celebrityeventsmagazine.com | Issue 58

In her spare time you will usually find Rachel swimming, running, reading a new book, cooking and baking, hanging out with friends and family, or trying a new restaurant. Her passions include participating community outreach programs for young adults struggling with depression and anxiety. She believes the most powerful thing you can give anyone is a comfortable outlet to allow individuals to express themselves honestly and openly. The main issue teens and young adults face today is the disapproval of others – In her year as Miss Texas, Rachel hopes to launch a site which promotes the comfort of anonymous users to seek help, advice, and journal their struggles and triumphs to share. In a world where social media is the foundation of the young generation, adapting new therapeutic methods would be applied to reach out and support the generation of today.

“She believes the most powerful thing you can give anyone is a comfortable outlet to allow individuals to express themselves honestly and openly.” However the cause that she holds near and dear to her heart is Diabetes Awareness. In July of 2013, Rachel lost her mother to complications due to Diabetes, and since then has been an advocate for healthier lifestyles, diabetic friendly culinary consultations and classes, walks, and charity events in order to honor not only the memory of her mother, but the lives of those fighting diabetes young and old.

our tropical island getaway, that gorgeous view of the French Riviera, or that relaxing resort with intense spa treatments is waiting on you! The question is what are the travel fashion trends for women? How do we dress for the long plane ride or the many excursions we plan to partake in on our vacations? Depending on what season you plan to travel in and what state, country, or city you’re traveling to, make sure that you always check the weather ahead of time before you begin to pack. This will alleviate the uncertainty and will allow you a successful and efficient packing session. Consider your period of stay as well, as this is an important aspect to remember. This will help you determine how many outfits you will need. Open up your luggage and let’s start packing! Your plane ride attire is very important. Make sure you wear comfortable yet simultaneously cute clothing that is soft and breathable. There’s nothing worse than a 4-hour flight, being confined to your seat with two other people on your row and you’re wearing tight clothes. Your outfit must be wrinkle resistant just in case you don’t have time to change when you land and you plan on simply checking in at your hotel, dropping off your bags, then setting off to explore. This will save you more time when you arrive ready to take advantage of the day that you have left, depending on

the time your flight is expected to land. Taking a carry-on bag like a tote bag is perfect for a neutral colored sweater in case you get cold and a shawl that can double as a pillow. Save the designer pumps for your nights out and opt for comfortable flats for your ride. Pack interchangeable items like basics and staples that can be mixed and matched with other outfits. This way you can keep your article pieces to a minimum. For instance if you’re packing a pair of jeans, these can be transitioned from day to night with different tops. If you plan on going out to experience the nightlife where you are vacationing, consider your surroundings. Where are you? Nightlife in New York City is different from the nightlife in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. If you are staying at the Miramar Hotel in Puerto Vallarta, remember you’re Continued on page 42

close to the water, so in the daytime you can go nautical with a pair of sunglasses and hat to protect yourself from the UV rays. For dinner at night, a colorful dress that’s of lightweight material like chiffon or cotton will be perfect paired with sandals, plus a chic, coordinated sweater or jacket to protect yourself from the evening breeze. The attitude and vibe of the city is what you want to encapsulate and this should be reflected in your dress. As the saying goes, When in Rome do as the Romans do. If you’re experiencing the nightlife in New York City and you’re going to a nice dinner, a cocktail dress with pumps or platforms will be appropriate. New York is about high fashion, luxury, the fast life, and bright lights! Go ahead and dress to impress!

late night walk along the beach. Traveling with your best, expensive jewelry can be risqué. Occasionally luggage is lost or stolen, so consider your favorite costume jewelry instead. If you’re packing four total outfits, bring a basic pair of studs with you for every day, a basic necklace, a watch and one set of costume jewelry per every two outfits. This means that you will have one set for your first two outfits and another set for your next two. Of course, you will have to make sure that each set you bring can go with both of the outfits. One hobo handbag for the day and one clutch handbag for night is sufficient. Make sure that these are neutral items as well or items that can match with all of your outfits if you plan on going out multiple times. As for shoes, one pair of heels will do you just fine and maybe two pairs of flats, boots, or sandals depending on the climate.

“The attitude and vibe of the city is what you want to encapsulate and this should be reflected in your dress.” To allow more room in your luggage, pack beauty items designed for travel as these are smaller in size. When packing, roll instead of folding your clothes to make sure that all of your things will fit. This will also allow you more room for new items that you may purchase on your trip and will keep your wrinkles to a minimum. Remember that neutral colored sweater that you brought in your carry-on bag? This will come in handy for any place that may be a little chilly. The weather can sometimes be unpredictable, so at least you’ll be prepared, especially if you’re near the water and you’re leaving your hotel for a
