Hunter Valley, New South Wales Australia’s first wine state
3 fun facts: • Vines were planted in the Hunter Valley in 1823 • The Wonnarua (people of the hills and plains) were the first inhabitants of the Hunter Valley • The first Australian Chardonnay plantings were divided between Sydney’s Botanical Gardens & the Hunter Valley The first wine region established in Australia, the Hunter Valley came into being as a wine growing area due to its proximity to Sydney. On paper, the Hunter shouldn’t have succeeded as a region: it’s too cloudy, too wet and too humid. But it proved its worth. Today the Hunter is best-known for Semillon, the white wine that ages like a red, and Shiraz, its leathery, savoury, coal-dust oddity. But it’s often forgotten that some of the greatest Chardonnays emerged from the region, like Lake’s Folly, Tyrrell’s Vat 47, Brokenwood and Margan. Proudly among those sits Rothbury’s esteemed Grey Label.
Rothbury Estate Grey Label Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2014 Made in the style of the great whites of the Hunter, this shows pure Rothbury pedigree, class and elegance. Stone fruit, citrus and tropical flavours sit comfortably amidst hints of grilled nuts and charred vanilla oak. Find more Hunter Valley wines at cellarmasters.com.au ONLINE
