IG cities and small towns, magnificent architecture and breathtaking scenery, inspiring country roads and relaxing lakeside beaches – Illinois has them all, in a state where you feel you’re getting to know the real America. The fifth most-populous state in the US, Illinois is known as the ‘Land of Lincoln’ and combines its historic roots with a modernday, up-and-at-’em approach that captures the past brilliantly but still looks to the future. Chicago may not be the state capital (that’s Springfield, where Abraham Lincoln lived, worked and is buried) but it still makes a capital jumping-off point for any visit to Illinois. It is also the birthplace of the skyscraper (the ten-storey Home Insurance Building in 1885) and, today, has the 110-storey Willis Tower and the 100-storey John Hancock Center. Located on the banks of Lake Michigan – with 26 miles of public beaches – Chicago’s transport system makes it easy to get around, no matter whether you’re calling in at one of its many institutions such as the Museum of Science & Industry or Field Museum of Natural History; preparing for a shopping bonanza on the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue); heading for the heights at the Willis Tower’s Skydeck (and
venturing on to the glass-fronted Ledge 1,353 feet above street level) or the John Hancock Center’s 360 Chicago (where another glass-fronted attraction, Tilt, does tilt visitors 30 degrees, and 1,000 feet, over the city); or just taking the air in the splendid Millennium Park. Visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to seeing the sights. With 25 neighbourhoods and 40 special-interest tours from which to choose, touring with a (free) Chicago Greeter (a friendly, knowledgeable local) is a great way to see the city and hear about its history. You can also cruise by the sign that marks the starting point for the Mother Road – the legendary Route 66, which runs from Illinois to Santa Monica in California and is a major focus for many visitors to the state. HICAGO may be the largest city in Illinois, but Springfield is the capital – and the place where you can really get to grips with American history in the heart of the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area. Among hundreds of items at the town’s award-winning Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum – which is marking its tenth anniversary with the new exhibit Undying Words: Lincoln 1858-1865 – are his trademark beaver-fur, stovepipe hat, an original copy of the Gettysburg Address and the document that Lincoln signed to end slavery. with Lincoln down the Mississippi to New Orleans, confront the horrors of slavery and listen to black servants gossiping in the White House kitchen. It’s in Springfield that you realise why the state is called the Land of Lincoln. As well as the museum, the town features the Lincoln Home, which has been completely restored to its 1860 appearance. The visitor centre has a scale model of 1860 Springfield. In Springfield’s Union Station, the Lincoln Movie Exhibit features furniture, sets, props and costumes from Lincoln, the Steven Spielberg blockbuster movie. In 2015, the city marks the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death with numerous events, from a recreation of his funeral train and procession to his burial site in Oakridge Cemetery to exhibits, presentations and other activities at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, the Old State Capitol and Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. About 20 miles from Springfield, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood.

While there are more Abraham Lincoln sites and history in Springfield and surroundings than anywhere else, there are other historic homes to see – such as the Dana-Thomas House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The 35-room home contains more original Wright art, glass and furniture specifically designed for a Wright house than any other Wright house from his Prairie Style period. New to Springfield in the summer of 2015 will be the 25,000sq-ft Kidzeum of Health and Science, the centrepiece of which will be a two-storey, interactive exploration of the human body through which visitors can climb and learn first-hand how bodies function. Being located on the legendary Route 66 that ran from Chicago to California, Springfield celebrates the Route 66 Mother Road Festival every September, when, for three days, the streets roar to the rumble of hot cars, cool trucks and vintage motor bikes. There are several sites in Springfield that highlight that Route 66 connection – such as the Cozy Dog Drive-In diner, which has been on Route 66 since 1949; the Route 66 Twin Drive-In Theatre, one of the state’s few remaining drive-in theatres; and a 1.4-mile stretch of the restored, hand-laid Original Brick Road, now on the National Register of Historic Places. But if you want to get away from the roar of the automobile engine, head for the 100-acre Lincoln Memorial Garden, which has six miles of trails and represents the landscape Lincoln would have known growing up in the Midwest. N the States, there’s shopping and more shopping – and then there’s the Mall of America. For no matter where you’ve been in the US before, nothing is quite like the shopping and entertainment centre in Bloomington, Minnesota, close to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The country’s biggest indoor shopping centre, it has more than 520 stores (including three major department stores), 50 restaurants, its own theme park – Nickelodeon Universe, with 24 rides – the SeaLife Minnesota Aquarium, with more

than 10,000 creatures, the longest indoor zipline in America, a Hard Rock Café and a Radisson Blu hotel, which is attached to the mall by a skyway. A new JW Marriott hotel is opening late in 2016 and expansion plans almost doubling the size of the mall in 2017 will make it the largest in North America. Now, that’s shopping! There are more shoppertunities at the Twin Cities Premium Outlets (with 100 stores), located just minutes from Minneapolis Saint Paul International airport in Eagan. By way of a contrast in shopping, visitors can experience the old and the new if they hit the trail. Two hours south of Minneapolis, Austin ArtWorks Center is a new art gallery and art-making venue set in a historic building, while, in the deep south of the state, the Faribault Woolen Mill – which has been operating since 1865 – is the only place of its kind still working in the US. to everyone from Crate and Barrel to George Clooney. Harking back to Minnesota’s Twin Cities, they are now connected by a new, 11-milelong, light-rail transit link, which brings together the state’s largest city (modern, cosmopolitan Minneapolis) and the state capital (historic, refined Saint Paul) and makes it easier for visitors to sample the delights and charms of both. Far from being places just for shopping, the Twin Cities offer an exciting arts-andmusic scene, some terrific, award-winning restaurants, wineries galore and craft breweries to tempt the most discerning beer drinker. And most weekends have some fun-filled event or activity going on Outside of Minnesota’s big cities, there are many appealing small towns, where visitors can feel at home and experience what it’s like to be an American. Minnesota is also a massive ice hockey state. Minnesotans love the game and follow the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild, who play at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul. American football fans are well catered for with the Minnesota Vikings, who are due to move into their new Minneapolis home, Vikings Stadium, in 2016, which will also stage the Superbowl in 2018. Baseball enthusiasts head to Target Field to follow the Minnesota Twins and basketball ‘nuts’ get their thrills at the Target Center cheering on the Minnesota Timberwolves, both in Minneapolis. Golf enthusiasts should note that the Ryder Cup will be staged in Hazeltine in 2016. Wildlife watchers are in their element, too, in Minnesota. The National Eagle Center on the banks of the Mississippi River in Wabasha is home to five rescued eagles, four bald eagles and one golden eagle, while the North American Bear Center in Ely focuses on black bears, and the International Wolf Center, also in Ely, turns the spotlight on wolves’ behaviour around the world. For an opportunity to look at more varied wildlife, the newly-opened Safari North Wildlife Park in Brainerd has 65 species from Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas. GL

Lakes State for nothing. It has more than 11,000 inland lakes, 36,000 miles of rivers and streams, and four of the Great Lakes – Michigan, Superior, Huron and Erie – wash the 3,200 miles of its shores. Wherever you are in the state, you are never more than 85 miles from one of the Great Lakes. Add the fact that Michigan has more than
100 state parks, four national parks, 1,300 designated mountain-bike and bicycling trails, more than 650 public golf courses and 600 campgrounds, and visitors wanting to ‘get away from it all’ couldn’t come to a better place. Take the Upper Peninsula in the northeast of the state. Sault Ste Marie is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the peninsula, with a diverse waterfront community, historical sites and the worldfamous Soo Locks, where huge freighters navigate the 21ft height difference between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Across Whitefish Bay, the 50,000-acre Tahquamenon Falls State Park is the second-largest state park in Michigan. Its centrepiece is the Tahquamenon River, where the Upper Falls, hidden in a forest along the river, have a drop of 50 feet. Four miles downstream, the Lower Falls cascade gloriously around an island. Nearby Whitefish Point is home to the excellent Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The Upper Peninsula is reached by crossing the Straits of Mackinac over the impressive Mackinaw Bridge, which separates Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. From the bridge it’s possible to see Mackinac Island. Accessible only by ferry – with no cars allowed – the island is just the place for a relaxing getaway. Rush hour in Mackinac

sees cyclists cruising along quaint streets, their only ‘opposition’ being horse-drawn carriages. The town’s main area consists of two streets near the ferry dock; the rest of the island is nearly pristine and even more enjoyable once the day-visitors have gone and tranquillity descends. B&Bs are top quality, while the Victorianera Grand Hotel sits on top of a hillside overlooking the Straits, as it has done since 1887. Fort Mackinac, built 100 feet above the Straits of Mackinac by the British during the American Revolutionary War, is now a living history museum with costumed interpreters. Back on the mainland, one of the most scenic drives in the state is the coastal drive along Lake Michigan. Upmarket Petoskey, one of the most beautiful regions in the state, offers terrific shopping at boutiques, art galleries and antique markets, while, farther south, Traverse City, known as the Cherry Capital of the US because nearly 75 per cent of America’s cherries come from the area, was named one of the Top Ten summer trips worldwide by National Geographic magazine. EADING south, the Victorian port city of Manistee is the home of the Historic Ramsdell Theater and the beautiful 1.5-mile Riverwalk, while the glorious sandy beaches of Ludington and Muskegon (which also has 60 miles of wilderness trails for biking or hiking) give visitors a chance to wind down on the trip. Cobblestone sidewalks and Victorian streetlights greet visitors to Holland, which, having been settled by Dutch immigrants, also has a windmill, a tulip festival and Dutch shops and bakeries. In South Haven, the Michigan Maritime Museum explores the rich sea-going heritage of the Great Lakes, while nearby St Joseph makes an excellent base for touring some of the many wineries and numerous tasting rooms on the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail. For an overview of the Great Outdoors in Michigan, the new Outdoor Adventure Center on the riverfront in Detroit will focus on state parks, recreation areas, beaches and trails, with exhibits, displays and handson simulators.

The 35-mile-long Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, called the Most Beautiful Place in America by viewers of a US morning TV show, features massive, dramatic sand dunes sculpted entirely by wind and water When it comes to big cities, Detroit is the largest in Michigan, but Lansing is the state capital. Less than two hours away from Detroit, it is sited on the picturesque banks of the Grand River. The city has a great system of parks, its River Trail offers terrific opportunities for walking and biking, and there are more than a dozen museums in the region. Other attractions include the Nokomis Learning Center, Abrams Planetarium, Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center and the Potter Park Zoo Detroit has had more than its fair share of troubles over the years but is now fighting back, focusing on being an entertainment hub (with several casinos), new stadiums and the revitalisation of the five-and-a-halfmile-long riverfront. Two hours north-west of Detroit, the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids features more than 200 sculptures throughout its 132 acres. In June, 2015, the eight-acre Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden, designed by famous Japanese-garden designer Hoichi Kurisu, will open and feature an authentic Japanese teahouse, a Zen-style garden, waterfalls and various sculptures. Public art round the state, incidentally, is the focus of a mobile phone app (MI Art from iTunes) that allows visitors to find specific types of art in Michigan.
Sports fans visiting the state can choose from baseball (the Detroit Tigers, four times World Series winners, at Comerica Park), ice hockey (the Detroit Red Wings, 11 times winners of the Stanley Cup, at the Joe Louis Arena), American football (the Detroit Lions at Ford Field) and basketball (the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills, a Detroit suburb). Auburn Hills is also the location of the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, where, in the spring of 2015, a 35,000sq-ft SeaLife aquarium will attract even more visitors to the 180 stores and restaurants at the mall. In Troy, another suburb of Detroit, the Somerset Collection offers 180 shops and restaurants for shopping and dining options, while, in the middle of the state, Birch Run Premium Outlets has 145 shops with a full range of designer names. options give it an appeal that may surprise but will certainly delight visitors. Memories of the classic, American-built cars linger on with the annual Autopalooza festival – a series of world-class automotive cruises (the Woodward Dream Cruise attracts 40,000 classic cars), races (including the Verizon IndyCar Series) and shows. South-west of the city, Dearborn’s Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village and Ford Rouge Factory Tour is a fascinating, attraction that combines the museum’s Driving America exhibit on the history of the car, a village with seven recreated historic districts and a working Ford assembly line. But Detroit also has a rich musical heritage, with the city’s music events including the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and the hip-hop Summer Jamz festival. And the city will always be known for its Motown connection, with Hitsville USA – the home of the Motown Museum and ‘birthplace of the Motown sound’ – highlighting that this was where Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5 and Diana Ross started on the road to fame. On the architecture front, the art deco Fisher Building is a Detroit landmark.
Finished in 1928, it’s considered to be Detroit’s largest art object. The brick-built Guardian Building – known as Detroit’s ‘Cathedral of Finance’ – was created for the Union Trust Co and National Bank of Commerce and is worth visiting for its elaborate interior alone. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a massive beaux arts building, with more than 100 galleries, while the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History houses the world’s largest exhibit on African-American culture. Farther afield, many of the 300 or more homes in the leafy neighbourhood of Palmer Woods – mostly neo-Georgian and Tudor Revival – were built in the early 1900s for auto-industry barons. The Edsel & Eleanor Ford home, for example, combines amazing architecture with beautiful landscaped gardens. Greektown – the home to Greek immigrants throughout much of the 20th century – is one of Detroit’s livelier neighbourhoods. On the food and drink front, Detroit more than holds its own. Breweries, brew bars and pubs serving Michigan-made and craft beers are serious business. Atwater Brewery was founded in 1997 with the purpose of carrying on the rich history of breweries in Detroit, and Atwater in the Park, a former church, is now a restaurant and biergarten with more than 40 taps. Detroit’s Eastern Market is a foodie’s dream. On Saturday mornings, it teems with people stocking up from more than 250 independent vendors and merchants. For more varied shopping, Royal Oak, a bohemian village on the outskirts of Detroit, offers a selection of speciality shops, art galleries and antique stores, while Auburn Hills’ Great Lakes Crossing Outlets has some great, unique dining options and will also feature the Sea Life Michigan Aquarium from early 2015. Logging and lumberjacks have always been an important part of Wisconsin’s history. In the small town of Hayward, visitors travel from all parts of the States for the annual Lumberjack World Championships, with competitions ranging from logrolling to chopping and pole climbing. The area also has some of the best fishing in Wisconsin. A major feature of Wisconsin is the fact that the Mississippi River runs virtually the whole way down the west side of the state. The Great River Road follows the Mississippi River through 33 river towns and, along the way, on what is an unforgettable drive, visitors can visit wineries and vineyards, experience life in a lively river town in La Crosse, visit Fort Crawford in Prairie du Chien, and see the masterwork of an eccentric, self-taught artist at the Dickeyville Grotto. On the art front, every July, Madison, the state capital, draws almost 200,000 people to its annual Art Fair on the Square, which showcases more than 500 artists from around the world. The city also features State Street (eclectic speciality stores) and Monroe Street (boutiques, galleries, etc), as well as the chic Hilldale Shopping Center (60 upmarket shops). There are two major outlet malls in the state – Johnson Creek Premium Outlets (60 shops) between Milwaukee and Madison, and Pleasant Prairie Premium Outlets (90 shops), just north of the border with Illinois. N 1951, Alan Freed, a disc jockey from Ohio, began playing music that he called rock ’n’ roll. It may not have been the first occasion that the term was used but this time it stuck. Nowadays, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the top – if not THE top – attractions in the Buckeye State. The Beatles, One-Hit Wonders and The

Columbus is the state capital of Ohio. NDIANAPOLIS may be best known for its Indy 500 race but non-motorrace visitors to the capital of Indiana can now view the best of the city on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. Eighteen years in the planning and construction – at a cost of $63 million – the trail meanders through eight miles of glorious greenery and public art works. In the city’s downtown area it passes the Indiana State Museum (with more than 50,000 works of art) in 250-acre White River State Park, the Indiana Repertory Theater and the historic Indianapolis City Market.

Visitors can enjoy Central Canal, with boat rides and scenic walking paths, as well as cozy neighbourhoods such as Broad Ripple Village and Fountain Square. Now, with the launch of Pacers Bikeshare, tourists can rent one of 250 gold bikes from 26 downtown stations to navigate the trail and explore the city. And, scheduled for a launch in early 2015, the US’s largest all-electric car-sharing programme, called BlueIndy, will have 500 cars, making it even easier for visitors to navigate the city. Indianapolis, of course is the home of the world-famous Indy 500 automobile race, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Its Hall of Fame museum, recognised as one of the world’s top automobile museums, has around 75 vehicles on display, including the Marmon ‘Wasp’, which won the inaugural race in 1911, and the Duesenberg #12 Murphy Special, the only car to win both the Indy 500 (1922) and the French Grand Prix at Le Mans (1921). Close to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Dallara IndyCar Factory gives visitors the opportunity to ride in a Street-Legal IndyCar 2-seater as well as sit behind the wheel of a real IndyCar and race the track on a simulator. The city also has what is claimed to be ‘the largest and best children’s museum
in the world’. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has terrific hands-on attractions, life-size roaring dinosaur skeletons, Terracotta Warriors and an antique carousel. And the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art aims to ‘inspire an appreciation and understanding of the art, history and cultures of the American West and the indigenous peoples of North America’. When it comes to shopping, the four-storey indoor mall Circle Centre in downtown Indianapolis has more than 125 shopping, dining and entertainment options, while the Mass Arts District features eclectic, independent boutiques such as Stout’s Shoes, the US’s oldest (1886) shoe store, and Silver In The City/At Home In The City (silver jewellery and unique gifts). The Broad Ripple Village neighbourhood, 20 minutes north of downtown, offers a lively mix of bars, clubs, art galleries, restaurants and one-of-a-kind shops. Also north of the city, the Fashion Mall at Keystone is the top luxury shopping destination in Indianapolis, with the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, as well as upmarket luxury speciality retailers. Sportswise, apart from the Indy 500, the city offers the Indianapolis Colts American football team (at Lucas Oil Stadium) and basketball’s Indiana Pacers (at Bankers Life Fieldhouse) as well as minor league baseball (Indianapolis Indians) and North American Soccer League (Indy Eleven). At Fort Mackinac, costumed interpreters relive the way it was at the time of the American Revolutionary War. The next stop, the town of Sault Ste Marie, was established as a settlement by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century. At Soo Locks Park, visitors get a stunning view of ocean-going freighters as they navigate the 21ft drop between Lake Superior and Lakes Michigan and Huron.
