Centenary College Athletics Our Athletic Philosophy

Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches, we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline, and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence.

About Our Athletic Program

At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our athletic department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our athletic department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. During your years at Centenary, you will be asked to make sacrifices, but these sacrifices will be well rewarded by relationships and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The athletic training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies and Assistant Athletic Trainer Eddie Giroux. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Head coach Kevin Davies concluded his 15th season at the helm of Centenary’s women’s soccer program in 2013. Under his guidance, the team has become a force in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and the region. Davies has guided the Cyclones to a 62-45-13 (.579) over the past six seasons, while posting a 44-15-5 (.746) conference record in that time. During this time Centenary has made six CSAC Tournament appearances, including a CSAC Championship in 2010. The Cyclones posted seven league victories in 2013, finishing in fourth place. Centenary advanced to the CSAC Tournament semifinals for the sixth time in seven years under Davies’ guidance. 2012 was a season highlighted by the Centenary defense. The Cyclones recorded six shutouts while yielding one or fewer goals ten times as Coach Davies’ team finished 7-9-2 overall and 6-4-2 in CSAC play. Sophomore Laura Potter led the Cyclones with 15 goals and 31 points, while senior Tatiana Kingston once again controlled the field for Centenary from her midfield post. Kingston finished the year with five goals and seven assists to help the Cyclones reach the CSAC Tournament. The 2012 season saw the Cyclones score 16 goals in a two game stretch as Centenary posted 9-0 and 7-0 wins over CSAC opponents Cedar Crest and Baptist Bible respectively. While the Cyclones season ended in a 2-0 loss at Neumann University in the CSAC Tournament first round, nine members Coach Davies’ squad earned postseason honors. Potter and Kingston were named to the All-CSAC First Team at forward and midfield respectively, while Nikki Crowley made the first team as a defender. Freshmen Kristen Brown and Zanetta Cheng were named All-CSAC Honorable Mention on defense, while Kelley Carvalho and Sara Smith were named Honorable Mention as midfielders. Rounding out the Honorable Mention honorees are Becky Camp and Samantha Sysak as forwards. In 2011, the Centenary women found themselves in a familiar situation - the CSAC Tournament semifinals in a penalty kick shootout after regulation and two overtime periods could not provide a winner. The Cyclones fell this time to Neumann, yet the season was filled with accomplishments. Centenary posted a record of 11-5-3, 9-2-

Several Cyclones earned post season accolades in 2011, including Brittany Overland who was named the CSAC Player of the year to go with her First Team All-Conference placement. Along with Overland on the All-CSAC First Team were Tatiana Kingston and Kristyn Lehmann. Earning Second Team All-CSAC honors were Caitlin Veverka and Sara Smith. Alyssa Hackelberg received All-Conference Honorable Mention and Arille Hamilton was placed on the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The Cyclones’ 2010 campaign began with Davies winning his 100th career game as head coach of Centenary, thanks to a 9-0 defeat of Old Westbury. After a loss to Cabrini that left the team 6-7, CC closed the regular season on a six-game winning streak, including a 1-0 doubleovertime win over Montclair State, the program’s first-ever victory against the Red Hawks. Centenary tied the program-record in conference victories, going 8-2 to earn the third-seed in the CSAC. After defeating Neumann in doubleOT, 2-1, CC tied second-seeded Marywood 2-2 and advanced to the championship game thanks to a 7-6 advantage in penalty kicks. The Lady Cyclones became the first Centenary program to host a conference championship, where it took on fifth-seed Immaculata. After tying the Mighty Macs 1-1, CC earned the CSAC Championship and its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth with a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks. In the NCAA Tournament, CC battled No. 16 Dickinson to a 1-1 tie and again went to penalty kicks, where this time the Cyclones fell, 4-2, ending their season. Jazmine Farrell received First Team All-CSAC and Second Team NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Regional and five other Cyclones earned AllConference awards, including Tatiana Kingston, who took home Second Team honors after setting a program record with 14 assists. After winning nine games in 2008, the Lady Cyclones improved to 14 wins in 2009, with five losses and one tie. The team matched their 2008 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) mark of 7-2-1 to place third in the conference. Centenary advanced to the semifinals where it fell at Cabrini. Because of their successful regular season, the Lady Cyclones earned a berth to the ECAC South Tournament as the sixth-seed, falling at third-seeded Swarthmore, 3-0. Davies coached nine student-athletes to CSAC postseason awards, including First Team honors for juniors Kelley Michanczyk, Bianca Santulli and Farrell. In 2008, Centenary finished 9-9-2, including a 7-2-1 conference mark. The Lady Cyclones defeated Immaculata 1-0 in the opening round of the CSAC Tournament, before falling to Gwynedd-Mercy, 1-0, in the semifinals. Five student-athletes received All-Conference honors, and Santulli was named to the NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-Mid-Atlantic-Region.

Davies guided Centenary to a 14-6-2 mark in 2007, including an 8-1-1 record in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC). The Lady Cyclones earned a berth into the conference tournament, reaching the championship game before falling to Eastern, 1-0. Davies’ squad then was chosen as the second seed in the ECAC Metro Region Tournament. Centenary shut out the College of Staten Island (5-0) and Rutgers-Camden (2-0) to reach the championship game, where it fell to Stevens, 5-1. Six student-athletes were named to the PAC All-Conference teams, including First Team honors for Tanya DiDonna, who also earned NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region Third Team honors and was selected as Centenary College’s Woman of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Over his 14 seasons at Centenary (1999-present), Davies has amassed a career record of 130-114-17. In four seasons in the CSAC, his team has a mark of 37-12-5. The Cyclones have made nine postseason appearances during his time with the program. Since coming to Centenary, he has taken the women’s soccer program to the next level, continually filling the schedule with high quality opponents. The Cyclones have developed an exciting style of soccer, one that makes it enjoyable for fans to watch and very competitive for team members to play. A native of Neath, South Wales, Davies began playing at the semi-professional level at the age of 16 for Briton Ferry Athletic in the Welsh National League. He then moved to the U.S. in 1994 to attend East Stroudsburg University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. While at ESU he played his freshman year for the very successful men’s program at the tender age of 34 before becoming the assistant women’s coach. Davies has also coached with the New Jersey ODP (Olympic Development Program) He currently holds a USSF ’A’ coaching license, while supporting numerous youth soccer clubs around the Hackettstown area. Besides his coaching duties at Centenary, he is one of the college’s athletic trainers. He resides in Hackettstown with his wife Stacy and their two children, Raegan and Shayne.

Kirsten Brynes begins her second season as assistant coach in 2014. Byrnes will serve as the goalkeepers coach for the Cyclones. She has 13 years of training and coaching experience with goalkeepers, most recently at Net Edge Training, LLC from 2011-12. Byrnes has coached collegiately as NCAA Division I St. Peter’s and Middlesex County College. Byrnes owns a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees, as well as a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Long Island University. Currently, Byrnes is an adjunct professor of psychology at the College of St. Elizabeth and Hudson County Community College.

The 2014 season is the second for Assistant Coach Rachel Laraway at Centenary College.. Laraway is a 2011 graduate of Duquesne University where she was a member of the Dukes’ NCAA Division I soccer program for four years. She owns a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the university. As the assistant varsity girl’s soccer coach at West Morris High School in 2011, Laraway scouted opponents and assisted with game day planning and preparation. She also has experience as the head junior varsity girl’s lacrosse coach at Quaker Valley High School in Leetsdale, Pa., for one season.

2014 Season Preview With the preseason underway, the Centenary College women’s soccer team is preparing for a return to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 2010. Moving up three spots in the polls from last year, the Cyclones were chosen to finish third in the Colonial States Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll. The Lady Cyclones finished last season with an overall record of 8-10-1 and 7-3-1 in CSAC play. With the addition of new faces to the Centenary squad, the Lady Cyclones return to action with half of the returning student-athletes having experience competing at the collegiate level and in the CSAC Championship Tournament. 16th-year Head Coach Kevin Davies has led the team to the league tournament each year since joining the CSAC in 2007 and guided the team to a conference crown in 2010. Cyclone standout Laura Potter (Gilboa, N.Y./GilboaConesville) and shutdown defender Nikki Crowley (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) enter their senior seasons. Potter finished second in the CSAC Conference in shots per game (51) and third in goals (9). During her three years at Centenary, Potter has entered the record books and is currently sitting in the 8th spot for points (65) and the 7th spot in goals (30). Crowley, who has started 51-of-52 matches during her career, will lead a new core of defenders that features three newcomers. Ellalee Myers (Harrisburg, PA / Harrisburg Christian School), Emily Pizzuto (Flemington, NJ/Central Hunterdon) and Amelia Attisano (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) look to learn from Crowley as they provide depth to the backfield.

2014 Season Preview

Senior goalkeeper Megan Williams (Glenside, Pa./Abington) is expected to be back in net after posting a 1.47 goals-against average and five shutouts last season. Williams will be pushed for time in net by new arrivals, Katerina Albanese (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) and Kaitlin Marold (Edison, NJ / Edison). The Cyclones were the CSAC’s second top scoring team last season (3.27 goals per game) while coming in first in points (8.09 per game) and shots (12.82 per game). Senior forward Samantha Sysak (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) ranked second on the team with seven goals and classmate Becky Camp (Bedford, N.J./ Middletown North) also ranked second on the team with 16 total points both look to create havoc on the field this season. Junior Lorraine Dedrick (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), Senior Cara Holmes (Pittstown, NJ / North Hunterdon) and Freshman Gabriella Kramer (Garfield, NJ / Garfield) will all be expected to add to the offense from the midfield and forward positions. Once again, the CSAC will feature competitive balance in the top half with the Cyclones battling a number of teams expected to push for the top spot in the league tournament, which begins November 3rd. Centenary opens the season August 29th as it hosts the Cyclone Kickoff Classic for the thirdstraight year. The Cyclones face Alvernia University during the opening day of competition and matchup with either SUNY-Brockport or Drew University August 30th. The tournament is held in the memory of Brittany Emerald Paes, a native of the same hometown as Potter, who tragically passed away in an accident in June 2012.

2010 Championship Team

The 2010 women’s soccer team brought Centenary College a year of firsts as they set the

best season in the program’s history with a 14-6-3 record, brought Head Coach Kevin Davies his 100th career win, took home the 2010 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship title, and made their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite entering the CSAC Tournament with a six game winning streak, the tournament would be no easy task for the Cyclones. The 2010 squad would face six seeded Neumann University in the first round of the tournament where they would compete in a double overtime thriller before Caitlin Veverka sent home the game winner to send the Cyclones to the final four. The semi-finals for the Cyclones proved to be yet another challenge for Centenary as took to the road to take on second seeded Marywood University. Once again, the Cyclones found themselves in a familiar position as they competed in double overtime with the pacers. This time however, the Cyclones could not end it in timed play, forcing a penalty kick decision. After a back-and-forth of successful penalty kicks, Cyclones goalie stopped the Pacers third-round sudden death attempt to allow Jen Dexter to send the ball to the back of the net and give the Cyclones the opportunity to host the 2010 Championship Game against Immaculata University. As the higher seed, the Cyclones were selected as the host team for the Championship, another program-first, and would host would could arguably be called one of the most thrilling CSAC Championships to date. The Cyclones and the Mighty Macs would remained tied 1-1 after yet another Centenary double-overtime, sending the game to a championship deciding round of penalty kicks. Through the first four rounds of penalty kicks, each team landed three successful kicks to send it into a sudden-death final round. With the Cyclones set to start the fifth round, Coach Davies turned to junior Courtney Flanagan who blasted the ball towards the goal, deflecting off Immaculata goalie Jessica Gaburo’s hand and into the back of the net.

2010 Championship Team With only one save between Centenary and the 2010 CSAC Championship, the Cyclones posted their top goalie, Ashley Denti between the posts to take on the deciding shot from Immaculata’s Erin Lewis. As the entire crowd held their breath, Lewis would rip a shot towards the Cyclone goal but Denti came up huge for Centenary, stopping the ball and leading the Cyclones to their first ever CSAC Championship. As the 2010 CSAC Champions, the Cyclones earned themselves an automatic bid into the 2010 NCAA Tournament as they were slated to take on No. 16 Dickenson in the first round. Once again, the Cyclones had to make things interesting as they remained tied 1-1 with the Red Devils to force their fourth consecutive double-overtime and eventually their third consecutive penalty kick shootout. Unfortunately this time would mark the end of the incredible run for the Cyclones as they were outscored 4-2 in the shootout by the Red Devils. The 2010 season would be one that would be remembered by all for the Cyclones, especially Head Coach Kevin Davies who had this to say after the CSAC Championship Game: “This has been a long time coming, 12 years. These ladies played hard today and I love them to bits. This season has been a long road, but we’ve played very well recently. Anything we do moving forward is just icing on the cake.”

2014 Costa Rica Trip While most of the fall teams at Centenary arrived at the college on the 15th of August for the first day of pre-season, the Centenary College Women’s Soccer Team were getting off a plane in the Central American Country of Costa Rica. For over a week, the Lady Cyclones would spend their time practicing, competing, and taking in the cultural differences the Costa Rican Soccer World and Country had to show them. The Lady Cyclones did not get too much time to prepare for their first game, as they would open their trip a day after landing with what could be considered one of the best club teams in the country. Unfortunately, the Cyclones could not hold on against the national champions, falling 5-0 in a hard fought game. “We played a very good team and got beat, but it was a good test for us,” said head coach Kevin Davies. “Especially considering that this group has only been together for one day. We actually had four freshmen playing in the defense at one point” Game two for the Cyclones would be yet another high quality Costa Rican team played in the mountains of San Carlos, less than twenty four hours later. The ladies played very well and with a new line up came away with a 3-2 victory. The last game of the tour was played in the coastal area of Liberia. The three games in five days obviously took its toll and the cyclones lost by a score of 3-0. “Although the effort was there, the girls ran out of gas by the end of the game”. One of the highlights of the trip occurred on the second day when the girls took to the community and ran a soccer clinic for under privileged children in the Capital, San Jose. Both the children and the players had a great time together. The Cyclones also had the opportunity to experience everything from visits to the rainforest where they went on a whitewater rafting trip. Zip Lining in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano, and the more relaxing Catamaran trip in the beach town of Tamarindo. “One of the main reasons for a trip of this nature is to bring the incoming players and returners together and hopefully have them gel as a group and as a team. The group certainly came together and now they are starting to play as a team. Another reason for the trip was to create memories which they will cherish for the rest of their days”.

J.E. Reeves Turf Field J.E. Reeves Jr. Turf Field is the brand-new XM field turf facility located on the campus of Centenary College. Opened in April 2014, the newly-constructed field serves as the home for Centenary’s men’s and women’s soccer teams, men’s and women’s lacrosse teams and other campus activities. The field was completed in large part due to generous donations from the Reeves Foundation and is named after J.E. Reeves Jr., the President and Treasurer of the Reeves Foundation.

In addition to the turf surface, a new scoreboard and sound system were installed for use at home sporting events.
